G e o r g e O s w a l d came i n h i s w o r k b o a t , a Grand Banks dory p a i n t e d the traditional light b l u e of the Lake Washington crawdad f i s h e r y . The " s l e e p e r " i n t h e r o w b o a t r a c e was Dave L e F e b v r e ' s c o l d - m o l d e d dinghy, which covered the three m i l e course with a stunning average speed of 4.8 k n o t s , m a k i n g e v e r y b o d y wonder about t h a t hoary o l d w a t e r l i n e l e n g t h - m a x i mum s p e e d e q u a t i o n . Maybe D a v e ' s got h i m s e l f a p l a n i n g rowboat. J u s t b e h i n d Dave came t h e J e n n y , f o l l o w e d b y D i c k Wagner i n a Whitebear. The r e s t o f u s w e r e strung along the c o u r s e . S a i l r a c i n g was d o m i n a t e d b y John H e n z i ' s S t i c k e e n , a P e t e r Lentini design. S e c o n d were t h e Wagners i n K i n , t h e i r Concordia sloop. Jenny f i n i s h e d third, demonstrating the a l l around v i r t u e o f W h i t e h a l l designs. There were t e n b o a t s in the rowing r a c e , seven under s a i l , a very impressive turnout so e a r l y in the y e a r . The f o o d was g r e a t , b u t D a r l e n e A l l e n ' s chocolate cake, decor a t e d w i t h a g a f f headed s c h o o n e r , was t h e h i t the day. I t was s o p o p u l a r , D a r l e n e has p r o m i s e d t o b a k e and d e c o r a t e a n o t h e r f o r t h e Wooden B o a t Show a u c t i o n . Take o u r w o r d - b i d on i t . When t h i n g s w e r e o v e r , D i c k Wagner a n d C h a s . Dowd towed t h e f l o a t b a c k w i t h t h e Navy d i n g h y , w h i l e C h a r l i e Bond made v a l u a b l e c o m m e n t s , and f r o m h i s r e l a x e d

vantage a s t e r n , explained to onlookers t h a t this was how t h i n g s were done b e f o r e outboards. There w i l l b e another r e g a t t a at the c l o s e of the s e a s o n , so be ready. Maybe w e ' l l c o n v i n c e L e F e b v r e and H e n z i t o tow buckets a s t e r n during the r a c e . I t ' s C h a r l i e ' s t u r n t o row t h e f l o a t back. . .

BOAT SHOW CRUISE As a " k i c k - o f f " event f o r the F o u r t h A n n u a l Wooden B o a t S h o w , we a r c g o i n g "to h a v e a r o w i n g c r u i s e the morning of the f i r s t day o f t h e S h o w . A l l rowing b u f f s are i n v i t e d to j o i n us in a row f r o m N o r t h w e s t S e a p o r t , i n K i r k l a n d , a c r o s s Lake Washington t o t h e B o a t Show s i t e o n L a k e Union.

The c r u i s e w i l l b e g i n a t 6 : 0 0 AM, c o v e r i n g a c o u r s e of about seven n a u t i c a l m i l e s . When t h e r o w e r s a r r i v e a t t h e Show s i t e , t h e y can j o i n i n a s p e c i a l continental breakfast, courtesy o f t h e C e n t e r f o r Wooden B o a t s . The l a u n c h ramp and p u b l i c d o c k a t K i r k l a n d w i l l b e crowded i n the m o r n i n g . P a r t i c i p a n t s may wish to t i e up to the p u b l i c dock t h e n i g h t b e f o r e .
