The Cedar’s Community Impact Over the past 25 years, The Cedar’s stage has been graced with brilliant, acclaimed musicians from all over the globe including legends and visionaries Greg Brown, Mavis Staples, Ani DiFranco, Femi Kuti, Doc Watson, and Amadou and Mariam.

These performances have inspired and awed people from all over the Twin Cities, the Midwestern region, and the world.

Today, our organization’s impact goes way beyond introducing audience members to amazing music. The Cedar is also doing important work under the radar, which has made it a crucial force in the health and vitality of the Twin Cities.

Rip Rapson, President of Kresge Foundation, emphasized the importance of arts organizations when he said, “Arts and culture need to be at the core of every conversation we have about community development in our country.” Reflected in our mission statement to promote intercultural appreciation and understanding through global music, The Cedar stands out as an organization that uses art as a vehicle for positive change. In fact, The Cedar’s mission is more relevant now than ever: Our programming educates audiences about cultural difference in our increasingly diverse Minnesota communities. We use thoughtful, strategic, and culturally competent outreach to engage diverse audiences with performances by artists who reflect a variety of cultures and backgrounds. This results in rich artistic content and organic opportunities for intercultural exchange through shared experiences.

“My 416 Club Commission changed me significantly as an artist, and I cannot look back. ” My name is Sara Pajunen. Throughout my artistic career,

I have identified primarily as a Finnish folk musician.

In 2013, The Cedar commissioned me to compose and perform a new piece as part of their 416 Club

Commissions program. The project enabled me to step

outside of my familiar roles and explore elements that were entirely new to me as an artist including conceptual work,

interactive performance, alternative media, electronic

elements, and free improvisation. The process and

presentation of the final piece catapulted me somewhere

new and unexpected. Support and funding from The Cedar

allowed me to experiment in a way that will shape my artistic output for a long time to come. My 416 Club Commission changed me significantly as an artist, and I cannot look back.

only opportunity our clients have to experience live music. The people we support are challenged in many ways and often have difficulty relating to or connecting with others. Music, being a universal language, pulls everyone together for a unified and festive event!

My name is Lundi Siwundla, and I am from South Africa.

I have very good news. I cannot prevent the bubble

from within. My host family took me to an amazing concert

tonight at The Cedar. Hey, you have never imagined

anything like this, let alone seen it. When I got inside,

there was a buzz of expectation. The band took the stage,

and they captured me from the first song. Before I knew,

everyone was standing up and the leader of the band came into the audience dancing and shaking our hands,

one by one. The people in The Cedar’s hall were so taken up with joy, celebrating

with all of their might. I forgot about everything else as I joined in the singing, shouting, and dancing.

I have seen faces of Somali teenagers light up while watching a bluegrass show and Tongan tourists trying to learn Romanian circle dances. “I see The Cedar supporting my community each and every day.v” — Dalmar Yaree

I am Dalmar Yare, a vocalist for the Somali music collective Wayaaha Cusub. I moved to Minneapolis

eight years ago to escape the violence of the Somali civil war. It has been difficult to sustain

my work as an artist in Minnesota because I do not have recognition among non-Somali audiences.

Not only has The Cedar given me the chance to perform and to develop a local audience, but I see The Cedar supporting my community each and every day. In January, The Cedar responded to a tragic fire that affected

the Somali community by hosting a benefit event, and they invited me to sing. They coordinated a collaboration between

Augsburg College’s Jazz Band and me to perform traditional Somali songs. Clips from the show

were posted on YouTube and went viral: Tens of thousands of Somalis throughout the world saw our performance!

Next year, The Cedar will fly the other members of Wayaaha Cusub from Kenya to Minneapolis for a

week-long residency of performances and educational activities as part of their Midnimo program.

We look forward to sharing our traditions and our message with Minnesota!

“ I was thrilled to share Somali heritage and culture with my younger abaayos, and The Cedar made it happen.”

My name is Baado. I have spent most of my life in Somalia, where I passed

the days sitting on my front porch, chatting with neighbors, and sewing babis, my

favorite Somali craft. Violence and danger pushed me and many of my people out of our country. I was in my mid-50s when I moved to Minnesota. Now, many of my

abaayos (Somali for “sister” or “girlfriend”) live far away. Because I don’t speak

English, it has been difficult to meet new people. A friend told me about the Women’s

Storytelling Circle at The Cedar Cultural Center. I was nervous because

I had never been to this place, but I decided to attend because The Cedar provided

transportation. When I arrived, I was warmly greeted by Cedar staff with soo dhawow,

Somali for “welcome.” Older and younger Somali women from all over the Twin Cities

sat in a circle eating sambusas, sewing babis, and telling stories. I was thrilled to

share Somali heritage and culture with my younger abaayos, and The Cedar made it happen. Even now that the series is over, my granddaughter drives me to

St. Paul every weekend to see my Storytelling Circle friends.

REACHED HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS FROM UNDER-RESOURCED SCHOOLS with daytime educational performances designed to promote diversity learning and foster a lifelong appreciation for different cultures and music.

Later this year, we will launch our largest and most significant community engagement initiative to date in partnership with Augsburg College. Titled Midnimo: Music for Unity, Campus, and Community and supported by a $200,000 grant from the Association of Performing Arts Presenters funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, Midnimo will bring Somali musicians from around the world to The Cedar to participate in residencies that increase understanding and awareness of Muslim culture on campus and in the community. Stay tuned for more information on performance dates and activities with Midnimo artists!

through presentations like: Norwegian musician Terje Isungset’s “Ice Music,” performed with instruments made entirely from ice; DakhaBrakha, a Ukrainian “ethnic chaos” band experimenting at the crossroads of Ukrainian folklore and avant-garde theater; and Drone Not Drones, a 28-hour drone featuring hundreds of Minnesota artists to benefit Médicins Sans Frontières.
