THE CDS IDENTITY Taking a good thing and making it stronger

OU MAY HAVE noticed that this issue of The Link is sporting a new look. With the launch of the new CDS logo last past spring, and a new focus on re-engaging our alumni like never before, we thought it might be timely to introduce a redesigned Link as well. The changes are small, but significant. Namely, a new masthead on the cover, a larger alumni notes section, more feature stories, and an invitation for feedback, which I hope you will take full advantage of!

I recently learned that the original CDS crest was designed in 1979 by former CDS parent, Bruce Hefkey, at the request of our second Headmaster, Robert Ross. Bruce chose to incorporate original teacher Peter Taylor’s credo – “Patience is a Tree”, along with the open Book of Knowledge, which he felt projected the School’s philosophy.

In 1990 the Board of Directors approved the addition of the motto “Integrity, Learning, Purpose” into the lower portion of the crest.

The primary reason for revising the CDS logo 23 years later was to link the crest with our acronym, CDS, and our tagline – education with balance. This new logo reinforces our guiding principles and overall philosophy. While this too is not a drastic change, it is a conscious effort to be more consistent and uniform in presenting who we are to the outside world.

Our new identity will be phased in over the coming months and years. Certain things, such as signage and athletic wear, will be updated on an as-needed basis. We think the new logo will help others understand who CDS has become, while assuring our CDS families, both past and present, that we have remained true to our original mission.

Education with balance remains at the forefront of everything we do. A new family has not yet experienced the essence of this tagline, which resonates so deeply with our current and past parents. It is the kind of magic that just happens when a child is introduced to a setting where he or she is encouraged to pursue an existing passion for something, or is given the tools and encouragement to discover a passion, whether that be for learning, creating, discovering, performing or competing.

CDS provides an idyllic setting where students can explore and discover hidden talents they never knew they had. They are encouraged and coached by teachers who thrive on watching them enjoy these moments of self-discovery. For some, this extensive involvement continues outside of school, whether that be through club athletics or service activities, or both. CDS not only encourages this, we go to great lengths to accommodate it. This is what we mean by education with balance.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

ENHANCING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE Now and into the future

S I ENTER my third year as Head of School, I am delighted to report that The Country Day School continues to thrive. We are in the midst of a capital campaign to support the most extensive addition to the School’s facilities in our 41-year history.

Given the enormity of this effort, I expected to talk primarily about our building project when I met with a Head of School from a well-established downtown school last spring; someone I am privileged to have as a mentor.

Thankfully, I have a very experienced mentor. He did not want to know much about the project. It took only a minute or two to establish that the building project filled an obvious need of the School and that clearly CDS is well on its way to filling the gaps that are apparent in the infrastructure. Rather, what he wanted to discuss, or more correctly what he wanted to challenge me with, was what was NEXT? Beyond the project, “what were my premonitions for the future of CDS?” he asked.

I have many visions of what the School will be like five, ten and twenty years from now, and many of them reside within our strategic planning process.

We launched a Strategic Plan in 2011 that placed emphasis on further enhancing the student experience, a theme well-aligned with the School’s student-centred vision. Each of the following five elements of our strategic plan is driven by the student experience, and we are well on our way to making these dreams a reality: Identity: We maintain a balanced program and promote leading pedagogical practices. We have framed our academic approach around a sensible, student-centred methodology (www.cds.on.ca/academics) that intentionally resists the temptation to follow whatever the flavour of the month might be in education. Increasingly, our identity is shaped positively by the inclusion of outdoor and character education in all that we do.

Community: We continue to strengthen our relationships with our parent community as well as our growing alumni. We have designated four of our long-serving faculty as Alumni Liaisons and we recently added a “CDS Origi-

nal” – William Spotton – to our staff to help us better connect. Our website is now a much more dynamic interface with the School, serving to inform both present and prospective parents.

Campus: The Making Connections campaign was launched in May 2012 in support of a major building project that will add a Dining Hall and Kitchen for our students and replace a large portion of the existing Senior School (www.cds.on.ca/makingconnections).

Talent: In the 2012/13 school year, we brought back the position of Middle & Senior School Academic Director in order to advance the teaching and learning principles of CDS. We also added staffing resources to expand our outdoor education initiatives and to reduce class sizes.

Additionally, we introduced the position of “Associate Teacher” and the program was a resounding success.

Sustainability: We have re-invigorated our efforts in admissions, marketing and advancement with innovative ad campaigns and an increasing use of social media channels. The School has excellent Board governance practices, no debt, and this past year our tuition increase was the lowest in the School’s history as the result of our continued sound and prudent financial management. The School’s endowment fund, which funds financial bursaries and provides a financial stability buffer for CDS, now exceeds $5 million.

I am inspired by the spirit of community and by the excellent progress we have made in achieving our strategic goals in such a brief time. This fall we will begin the process of creating a new strategic plan set to launch in 2016. Our next steps – and our next dreams – will be made with as much care and discipline as those that carried us to this point in our history. I look forward to discussing, reflecting, collaborating, and most importantly, dreaming with the entire CDS community about what our school will look like in the future.

How it All Began Mighty Oaks from Little Acorns Grow

THE EARLY DAYS

I

T BEGAN OVER a casual dinner in early January 1971. Edmond G. Eberts and his late wife, Daphne, were hosting Moffat Dunlap and his late wife, Margo, when the topic of discussion turned to the merits of the local schools for their children.

At the time, the population of the Region of York (now York Region) was steadily evolving from agricultural to residential and the local government had decided to shut down its country schools and bus primary students from King Township and other rural hamlets to one of the newer and larger regional public elementary schools. Many parents were not in favour of their children being taught in larger classrooms. Others had grown tired of driving their children to Toronto independent schools. There appeared to be a growing demand for a local co-ed alternative to the public and separate school systems, one that remained small and personal, stressed learning and demonstrated a commitment to teaching excellence.

any experience in starting a school. They had, however, attended independent schools and were determined to gather the necessary information by approaching people they knew in the field to find out whether such an idea was a) achievable and b) viable.

Ed approached a friend, the late John Pratt, (CDS’ first Headmaster whose obituary appears on p. 44), who had been a few years ahead of him at Bishop’s College School in Lennoxville, QC. John was quite knowledgeable about independent schools and curriculum was his area of expertise. He had taught English at Bishop’s as well as at Trinity College School in Port Hope and, at the time, was pursuing his Master of Education at Columbia University in New York City.

Having grown up in the U.S., Margo was familiar with the country day school movement and sought the advice of a cousin, Robert Webster, who had been involved in starting the Maclay School in 1968. Margo suggested they call their proposed school ‘The Country Day School.’

Moffat met with Dick Howard, Head of Upper Canada College Prep School, who had been his housemaster at UCC, to ask his professional opinion. He thought it was a terrific idea and agreed to help in an advisory capacity. For the next two years Dick never missed a board meeting, which were initially held in the boardroom of the Wilson Niblett car dealership in Richmond Hill, compliments of Gord Wilson, Sr.. Gord would later become a Trustee and the first Chairman of the Finance Committee, not to mention that he and his wife, Jan, were the first parents to enroll four children at CDS! Moffat recalls Dick’s advice: “You’ve got to get a feel for the community, who’s in it and how they perceive education.” Ed suggested they take a year to gauge the level of interest and do some fundraising.

In March 1971, a group of interested parents hired John Pratt to conduct a feasibility study. Upon his arrival that June, John and others arranged for one-on-one and general meetings with local families. Follow up tele-

phone calls were made to all who attended, and interested parents were encouraged to submit names of others. It wasn’t long before John was able to demonstrate significant parent support for the establishment of an elementary school offering Kindergarten through Grade 8.

The Country Day School Foundation was established to accept donations in September 1971. The four Trustees were: Ed Eberts, as Chairman; Moffat Dunlap; Howard W. Hunter, a financial advisor with Burns Fry; Christopher Johnston, legal advisor with Strathy, Archibald, Seagram & Cole; and John Pratt as Secretary. Official acceptance of the application of the Declaration of Trust for status as a non-profit organization had also been received, thereby satisfying the unique corporate requirements for opening an independent school.

By the New Year, John had held seven general meetings, attended by about 125 families. The results of a questionnaire prepared by Margo indicated that 85 families

were interested in enrolling their children.

In February 1972, a committee was formed to evaluate John Pratt’s research and make a final decision on the viability of the School. The Criteria Committee consisted of the five Trustees and three veteran independent school educators: the aforementioned Dick Howard; Mrs. Janet Dawson, former St. Clement’s School Headmistress and wife of Tony Dawson, a music teacher at St. Andrew’s College; and Mr. Jack Wright, the founding Headmaster of Royal St. George’s College and longtime teacher at St. Andrew’s.

Roy McCutcheon, the newly appointed Dean of the Seneca College King Campus, which first opened in 1971, also became involved as an original Board member later that fall. Seneca had considered starting an Equestrian program and it was suggested to Roy that he contact Moffat, who was well-known in the Canadian horse community. Moffat in turn sought Roy’s advice on shared facilities and a lasting relationship had begun.

“There wouldn’t have been another

school in Canada that had stronger people advising them,” said Moffat. “It wasn’t just a holiday for these people; they worked at it, and we knew our kids would be the beneficiaries. These parents were not going to let the School down.”

The Trustees were relentless in their approach and spearheaded a considerable community effort. The more people they approached for donations and support, the more parents became motivated to help fundraise, find a location with land available for extensive outdoor facilities, and do whatever else was needed.

In a final push to spread the message throughout the community, Ed, Moffat and John sought future CDS parent, Ben Rough’s, assistance in arranging local media attention.

Stories ran in the Aurora Banner, Newmarket Era and Richmond Hill Liberal. Additionally, all three appeared on a half-hour television show on Richmond Hill Cable Television.

Peter was hired shortly thereafter and went on to teach for the next 18 years as one of CDS’ beloved teachers. He is perhaps remembered most for his role in the construction of the Longhouse behind the School, which he and his students began building in 1974 and took more than two years to complete. For the next 16 years Mr. Taylor taught Indian Heritage to his students, while preparing bannock and cooking muskrat over an open fire, on numerous overnights spent in the Longhouse.

The late Alison Scott, the first teacher John hired, was lured back to Canada from California, where she had been teaching at the Marin Country Day School outside of San Francisco.

Christine De Witt was the third teacher hired.

A native of Paris, France, Christine was a naturalized American who had taught early childhood education and French for two years at the Children’s Centre in Tenafly, New Jersey.

Meanwhile, the issue of location had yet to be resolved. “We could not find a building anywhere in the Newmarket/Aurora area that would suit our needs,” remembers Moffat.

They looked at renovating barns, considered All Saints Anglican Church in King City and York County Senior Citizens’ Home, and just really scouted the countryside. “Parents who were on board would take a detour on their drive home at night to explore every potential venue.”

tion turned down, their luck changed when they learned that the York County Board of Education was about to lease recently closed surplus country school properties, including School Section No. 22, Eversley Public School. This property included an original one-room schoolhouse built in 1883 (which is now the Junior School Library) and two large classrooms, now situated at the entrance of the Junior School.

“Negotiating the building lease was the stroke of Moffat’s genius,” recalls Ed Eberts.

The two-year agreement with the York County Board of Education cost $200 per month. In addition, CDS only had to pay for maintenance, heat and electricity, which amounted to about $3600/year.

Moffat got a lead on good quality used classroom furniture from the former Ontario Minister of Education and newly elected Ontario Premier, the Honourable William G. Davis, who put him in touch with Clare Westcott, his personal assistant. “We got out the horse van, washed it, brought it out to a warehouse in Brampton and just loaded it up,” said Moffat.

Over the next few months, the entire three-room school was renovated on a volunteer basis by faculty, parents and students.

Phillip Harris, a talented artist, orchestrated the painting of the rooms by colour: blue, green, yellow and orange. John Pratt’s father, a renowned World War II entertainer, supervised the construction of a Shakespearian stage in the original one-room schoolhouse.

It had been a colossal community effort and a true labour of love. The Country Day School opened its doors to 49 students on September 11, 1972.

THE SUCCESSFUL BID

OR THE NEXT six years the School held a year-to-year lease with the York Regional School Board and was not able to declare a financial break-even point until the end of the 1975-1976 fiscal year.

In September 1976, the new CDS Headmaster, Robert Ross, was advised that the Ontario Government was encouraging the sale of surplus schools and that the Building Committee of the York County Board of Education had recommended the sale of Eversley School. These schools would be offered in the following order: to any publicly supported post-secondary institution interested; to the municipality where the building is located or local board thereof; to conservation authorities, provincial and federal governments or authorities established by them. If there was no response from these groups, it would be offered for sale either by sealed tender or public auction.

Former CDS Director and member of the York Board of Education at the time, Margaret Coburn, speculated that it would take about a year to get to this stage. To complicate matters, if the School was not sold and the

1976 Ontario Budget proposal to tax nonprofit and charitable organizations came into effect, CDS would no longer be deemed taxexempt, thereby creating an additional threat to its future.

Parents and staff had already invested so much time and money into building improvements that no one could conceive of an alternative site more suitable. Robert Ross and the Directors launched a campaign to lobby the Board of Education to offer CDS the first right of refusal. It was decided that Board member (and future Chair), Janet van Nostrand, should draft the letter as she was a wellrespected primary school teacher and highly thought of at the York Board of Education.

Meanwhile Moffat, who worked in real estate, valued the property at $95,000. Armed with this information, the Trustees and Board members continued to work at raising the money to fund the School in the hope of securing the property; however, in the event that a sale was not an option, they could not drop their guard in the quest for an alternate site.

In wasn’t until the spring of 1978 that they learned the property would be put up for auction later that year; nearly a year later than they originally had thought. On September 23, CDS parents (past, present and future) Moffat Dunlap, Michael Burns, Bob Sillcox and Gord Wilson joined Derek Lederer (the school’s auditor and future CDS parent) and Headmaster Ross at the School to mastermind the bid. There were three groups interested.

Orr, from cattle auctions and spoke with him in advance. He learned that there would be a reserve bid that had to be met in order for the buyer to be successful.

The live auction ended with the CDS bid of $95,000 being the highest. But since it was below the unknown reserve bid, it did not sell. In an unauthorized move, the auctioneer allowed all three bidders to submit a final sealed bid. As the story goes, the Committee determined that the Government reserve bid would most likely be an even number, $100,000, $105,000 or $110,000. They decided on $111,000 and submitted their final bid. The bid met the reserve and was accepted as the highest bid – they had won! It had cost $16,000 more than they had first intended, but nevertheless, the property was theirs and the future of CDS looked secure.

PRESENT DAY CDS was not only founded by parents who wanted more for their children, but every major fundraising appeal throughout its 41year history has relied upon the generosity of CDS families and their friends. According to Michael Burns, the fundraising chair of CDS’ first campaign in 1979 – The Promise of the Future – and a dedicated fundraising volunteer since the beginning, “If you lived in close proximity, you were asked. Even if you didn’t have age-appropriate children you were still asked. Friends of friends were asked and people gave what they could.”

In May 2012 The Country Day School launched what is effectively its seventh major capital campaign – the Making Connections campaign – with the aim being to raise $10 million to pay for a multi-purpose dining hall and a new Senior School.

The campaign has reached the halfway mark – a milestone indeed. Yet the real work is still ahead of us. The spirit of community that built, expanded and secured CDS’ reputation as a leading Canadian independent school continues to thrive. Our advantage today is the history and momentum that our 40+ years affords us. With our growing alumni network and the expanding number of families who have witnessed what the School has done for their children, we believe our campaign goal is within reach.

Thank you to our CDS community members for your incredible support past, present and future. As the saying goes, “Mighty oaks from little acorns grow.”

WHY DO WE NEED TO ATTEND?

hat is it, exactly, that puts attention at the forefront of successful learning and self-control?

There are three broad features of the attention system: it directs mental energy, it offers resistance to distractions, and it allows for the planning and completion of tasks. In the language of attention specialists, it allows a

child to alert to some form of interaction (notice a signal in the world), orient toward it (concentrate the mind on it), and execute a task (maintain a sufficient duration of focus). This final part of the system is often called executive attention.

Taken all together, this is a potent mixture of capabilities. A child who has difficulty attending – in any given moment, for any reason, with or without a diagnosed deficit – has difficulty learning.

In addition to supporting learning, we exercise our attention system in our personal lives. Being aware of a person close to us (alerting), turning toward them (orienting), and having the patience to listen and really focus on what they are saying (executing) makes understanding, warmth, and empathy possible.

Paying attention is an intimate act: it requires us to make space for another person inside our consciousness. This is the (continued on page 10)

Studies indicate that children equate uninterrupted attention from their parents with love. Kids who experience their parents as constantly distracted by tasks, electronics or adult concerns feel that their parents don’t care enough to zoom in on their interests, ideas and struggles.

Attention, to a child, is love.

Similarly, paying attention in the classroom makes space for new practices and ideas inside the mind. You could say that deep learning is also an intimate act: it brings us closer to understanding the world and ourselves, which is the essence of personal progress.

We all want our children to grow into their best selves, and parents can do a lot to help along the way. The first step is understanding what disrupts the development of a strong attention system, and the second is actively creating the context our kids need to develop the best minds they can.

DISRUPTORS TO ATTENTION

t is helpful to understand the array of internal forces (inside the mind) and external factors (in the environment) that can disrupt attention and hinder a child’s learning.

At the top of the list are stress and anxiety. Emotion plays a central role in attentiveness, and few children – or adults – can devote themselves to a task when upset, fearful, worried, or uncomfortable.

This is why teachers work so hard to create a calm and welcoming classroom where students feel safe and cared for. A child’s internal state (usually stemming from interactions in their environment) makes or breaks the learning moment. In the end, we respond to stress as a state of threat: fight (act up, be disruptive, deflect) or flight (retreat inside and tune out).

We can’t relieve every stress in our kids’ lives, nor should we; they need to manage small ones on their own. But when the big emotional upsets come along, it is important to remember that they will undermine learning. Stress doesn’t stay at home; fear and worry carry throughout a child’s day, interrupting all three of their attention networks.

In addition to emotional stresses, our modern culture offers endless disruptions to the developing attention system of a child. In a much cited 2006 opinion piece in The New York Times, Thomas L. Friedman declared that having passed through the Iron Age, the Industrial Age and the Information Age, we now live in the Age of Interruption: “All we do now is interrupt each other or ourselves with instant messages, e-mail, spam, or cell-

phone rings. Who can think or write or innovate under such conditions?”

Add Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr and other social media platforms to Friedman’s list, and you have a perfect recipe for what former Microsoft executive Linda Stone first called continuous partial attention: “We pay continuous partial attention in an effort NOT TO MISS ANYTHING. It is an always-on, anywhere, anytime, anyplace behavior that involves an artificial sense of constant crisis. We are always in high alert.”

Stone is describing both a personal state of being and a wider social reality.

We scan the environment for every opportunity to connect and be connected, and that same environment constantly tells us, “hey, you need to know this, respond to this, update this, share this, or you’re on the outside and don’t really matter.” This is why Stone calls it an artificial sense of crisis; it is stirred up by the social context but, not actually productive.

Children raised in a world of continuous partial attention miss crucial opportunities to develop and practice their attention system. They are continually alerted to some signal from the world and orient toward it briefly and at a superficial level. This happens over and over again: alert, orient, alert, orient.

There is very little need for executive attention, which is the powerhouse of the

whole system and closely correlated with academic performance.

Executive attention allows us to regulate emotion, ignore distractions, narrow focus, establish goals, make plans, and work in a sustained manner to meet them. It’s this third part of the system that allows for intellectual engagement and depth of understanding. It enables us to follow a lesson in class, read a book, solve a complicated math problem, plan and perform a science experiment – any task that requires critical thinking.

Parents can also coach healthy inhibition by saying out loud the steps involved for a child to stop doing something and pay attention: “Turn down the television, look at me, and listen, because this is important.” It’s a simple but effective set of instructions that parents often miss, leading to frustration and conflict with the child about “not listening.” But children find it hard to inhibit their impulses. Coaching them through the steps offers practice for their executive attention.

The trick with all attention-building techniques is that parents have to commit to them too. Don’t interrupt your kids when they talk, resist impulsivity, delay your own gratification, and complete the things you start. Turn off your phone, follow the household routines, and take a walk. And offer plenty of out-loud coaching, even

Psychiatrist Elias Aboujaoude of the Stanford School of Medicine describes the “online disinhibition effect” of virtual environments. He explains that we have fewer inhibitions online and tend to act more impulsively than we would in person. The online environment is one place where a child is not building strong attention skills, since one marker of executive attention is the ability to resist impulses and curb rash behaviour.

Parents can also create a well-focused home where there are quiet times for conversation and leisure activities that do not involve intense, high-sensory stimulation: reading, playing cards or board games, drawing, or taking a walk. Parents in a well-focused home teach children not to interrupt, to delay gratification (“that’s a good thing to put on your Christmas list” or “that’s something you can save up for”), and to complete tasks (a jigsaw puzzle, a room clean-up). Sharing multi-stage projects with a child – building a model, planning a camping trip, baking a batch of muffins, creating a book of original cartoon strips – catches their attention (alerting), focuses their minds on the task (orienting), and maintains the necessary duration to finish something (executing).

A well-focused home also has routines and schedules that allow kids to practice and repeat simple procedures. It has shared chores and responsibilities, and it is not an entertainment factory. When children are bored, especially at times when technology is off-limits, it is perfectly

parental propaganda: “don’t interrupt – it’s rude and it doesn’t develop patience” or “you have my undivided attention – start from the beginning and tell me the whole thing” or even “we’re taking some time away from the screens so our brains can shift into thoughtful mode.”

arents pass their values on through what they say and what they do. If you see the value of training attention and developing self-regulation, you will model it and talk about it all the time. It will be an effort up front, but it yields an amazing return. A child who sits in the headquarters of their own mind and directs their learning and living to the best of their ability is a child who thrives.

This has been the first year that I can remember an athlete winning both the Athlete of the Year Award AND the Sportsman of the Year Award. Not only did this happen once, but two athletes accomplished this: Joey Stipec and Christopher Dimas.

This was also the first year we have ever had three female athletes share the Athlete of the Year Award: Julia Brown, Meredith Langston and Paula Voorheis.

All of our award winners share many common characteristics and they all represent the type of athlete we would like all of our athletes to become. We think of these athletes as role models who are leaders, respect the game, have an abundance of talent, and are committed to not only their teammates, but also to improving through hard work and dedication.

The ultimate goal of our Athletics Department at CDS would be to have a whole audience full of Athletes of the Year and Sportsmen and Sportswomen of the Year. I believe our award winners have set the bar for all CDS athletes to strive for and attain.

CDS offers drama for all ages!

Urinetown Delights Last February’s production of Urinetown! The Musical was a foray into musical theatre history with songs inspired by West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof, among others. It journeyed through theatre history, employing a variety of theatrical constructs, including Epic theatre. Finally, it delved into a very current environmental issue and asked the audience to think of the problem of water consumption in a realistic way.

Wyndham-West, travelled to Durban, South Africa to compete in the World Individual Public Speaking Championships. Natalie competed against 130 students from around the world in four categories: Parliamentary Debate, Persuasive Speaking, Impromptu Speaking and Interpretive Reading. With her impressive top 30 finish, she was the top under-15 speaker at the event.

April 6 Grade 10 student, David Cohn, wrote the Euclid Math Test and scored a 66 – the worldwide average score was 48.8.

7 The Senior Concert Band, Senior Choir and Senior Jazz Band travelled to Chicago to perform in the Heritage Music Festival, bringing home a gold standing and first place, silver standing and second place finish, and gold standing and first place

respectively for a high school with a population less than 600.

8 The 2012/2013 edition of the Arts and Literary Magazine, Portraits, was launched at a special reception and featured the work of 90 students from the Middle and Senior Schools – an impressive 120 pages.

KENYA 2013 Helping to build a better world Over March Break, 27 CDS Senior School students traveled to Kenya with Free the Children to build a kitchen, the foundation of a teacher’s dormitory and reroute water-flow around existing schools. It was an incredible learning experience for all and beautifully depicted below by Walter Davison, Director of Middle School:

ANY BELIEVE that the youth of today live a life dominated by unnecessary excess and luxury. If this is true, please know that such a debate must be tempered by knowing there is a collection of dedicated students whose passion for knowledge and experiential improvement is of equal, if not heightened, dominance. The truly joyful commitment of this group was, and is, extraordinary. Bringing together 27 personalities whose school lives are as varied as one could possibly imagine, while also creating, sharing and embracing wonderful perspectives was magnificent. Indeed, sharing heartwrenching and heart-warming experiences will remain as clear as the sunrises we enjoyed at 6:30 a.m. in the Mara!

Recognition of this venture would be incomplete without

mention of the laughter that was part of every meal, bus ride and activity; the stories to be told will last a lifetime! To live within such a truly supportive and comfortable environment for seventeen days, highlights why each of you choose to live life to the fullest, return home physically exhausted, yet spiritually energized.

Please know that words unsaid are as important as deeds and emotions that are quietly expressed. Your genuine support of each other and interest in everyone’s welfare was, and is, extraordinary.

A truly beautiful trip was spent with you all! The gentle joy you promoted while working very hard to complete a new school kitchen and to assist with the drainage infrastructure of the existing buildings is surpassed only by your extraordinary spirit and unwavering determination to be of assistance to others. There is no question that I now know twenty-seven additional global citizens with a commitment to making their world – no matter how big or how small – a better place in which to live.

ACTS OF KINDNESS IN FRANCE Students traveled to Europe to learn about history and took away much more

OR 11 DAYS over March Break, 44 students in Grades 10-12 visited France, Belgium and Holland and enriched their knowledge of the language, culture and history. On our sixth day of travel, Northern France experienced an uncharacteristic heavy snowfall while the group was en route to visit Vimy Ridge.

France is unequipped to clear snow and ice, and the wind and blowing drifts made conditions even worse. Our bus was eventually ordered by the gendarmerie to get off the roads. We were told we could go no further, and that the townspeople in a small village called Miannay, would take us in and give us a place to sleep for the night.

What we experienced next was nothing short of incredible. We were shuttled back to the village town hall, which had a large party room/gymnasium where we could sleep. We were in awe as townspeople, including the Mayor and the

Deputy Mayor, the local butcher, and a photographer from the local newspaper, bustled about to provide us with sleeping mats and a dinner of fresh baguettes and cold cuts, salads and drinks. Later in the evening, the Red Cross stopped by with blankets for sleeping.

The students were in the highest of spirits. Everyone recognized and appreciated this incredible act of kindness – and the adventure that ensued. We were enjoying an unexpected sleepover in a tiny village in France – who else could say they had done that? Students read and watched movies, played games, sang songs, and engaged in great conversation. Getting to sleep was the lowest priority, but eventually everyone quieted down and we got some rest after a long day.

We awoke the next day and learned that the roads were still closed and we would not be able to leave until 4:00 p.m.

The villagers provided us with a wonderful French breakfast consisting of ba-

guettes with jam and Nutella. After hearing the news, the students went out to explore the village. Meanwhile, the villagers once again came together to plan a hot lunch for all of us.

Just before we sat down to eat, we found out that we would be allowed to leave as the roads had reopened. Students set about making a beautiful thank you card for the Mayor of Miannay and those who helped us, and after lunch we departed for our revised destination, the city of Bruges. The roads were clear and the sun came out as we travelled north to Belgium, and we arrived in Bruges late afternoon, just in time for a guided walking tour.

While we had moved on, the people of Miannay remained in our thoughts and hearts for the remainder of our trip, and we will be forever grateful for the outpouring of generosity they showed us!

CLOSING DAY 2013

EXCERPTS FROM JUNIOR SCHOOL GRADUATION Follow the Yellow Brick Road: Lessons from Oz

NE HUNDRED and thirteen years ago, L. Frank Baum first published the classic story of The Wizard of Oz. We are just shy of the 75th anniversary of the timeless movie when characters Dorothy, Scarecrow, Lion and Tin Man were first seen on the movie screen.

Their journey down the yellow brick road is not much different than our students’ journey through the Junior School, and then down the ramp to Middle School and Senior School. What they were searching for on their way to Emerald City are the same things our students are searching for, and I hope they find in their journey.

Like Scarecrow, they are working on and searching for more brains every day.

School is all about learning how to learn and knowing how to use your brain. Our students already know the importance of working hard, studying hard and finding

subjects that are motivating.

Finding courage in this world will not be easy. Lion had to find his courage and face the lions, tigers and bears. Our students, on the other hand, will have to find their courage when interacting with classmates.

Many travelers on the yellow brick road, and in the Junior School, have shown evidence of both brains and courage. But it is in finding brains, courage and heart that makes for the perfect journey. It is easy to be selfish, and it is hard work to be selfless. We all know how happy our hearts feel when things go our way. Tin Man tells us we learn equally when our hearts are hurting.

Tin Man is finally convinced he has a heart when he says, “Now, I know I have a heart because it is breaking.” When one feels empathy and concern for others and puts their feelings first – that is when one truly has heart.

Time at home will go fast for our students, and it will go even faster for their parents. Here is where we learn a lesson from the girl in the ruby slippers. Dorothy was a restless young girl who did not find her home until she left it, and more than anything else, Dorothy teaches the lesson that “there’s no place like home.”

Dorothy, Tin Man, Lion and Scarecrow all had their own journey – all in search of something different. Remember, like them, we are not on the yellow brick road alone. When friends stick together, they can work miracles. Link arms, journey together and remember, “All you need is right there inside you.”

So, Junior School students, as you venture ahead, I trust you will always honor and take care of your brains, courage, heart and home. And remember, “Dreams really do come true.”

Creating peace and peace-of-mind is a never-ending process. As we all move forward with a determination to reflect upon the power of perspective and the importance of the background, I would ask that you agree with one of Charlie Brown’s statements of fact. “There are three simple things in life that people like to stare at: a flowing stream, a crackling fire and a Zamboni clearing the ice.”

It is hard to sum up a year chalk full of great teachers in such a short time. I want each teacher to know that you will be remembered for the unique impact you have made on our lives and experiences.

But there is one teacher who deserves more recognition than I could ever give him.

He is the root of the Middle School tree and we would collapse without his support and wither away from lack of guidance. Mr. Davison, we may have all started out as tiny saplings, but you are the reason that we have grown and thrived into the people we are, and will be. Your direction has allowed us to branch off and explore every area of the Middle School. Maybe it is because you squirted us with water guns and dissected worms with us in Grade 7, or maybe it was just the little things you did that

made the biggest difference, like the quotes you wrote out every day, or the pictures you shared with of us. We are all so grateful for your unfailing navigation and obvious care. You helped us soak up as much sun as we could before continuing onto the Senior School, and who knows what kind of state our tree would be in if you weren’t their watching over us? Thank you Mr. D, for all that you’ve done.

And to my Grade 8s: There is something out there for you to discover, as long as you have the passion to find it. Excerpts from Craig McFarlane’s Valedictorian Speech

ET’S START FROM the beginning, I know we all came to the School thinking the same thing – why the uniform? It’s uncomfortable, extremely hot and makes me feel like I should be lounging in an office pretending to do work.

Once you have recovered from the shock of the uniform, you begin to realize that you have a vast number of amazing opportunities at your disposal at CDS from the PAC, to the gyms, to the incredible fields and of course to the amazing level 4 educators

who have tried their hardest over the years to keep us in line. The memories that we have made this year stem from our teams, the plays, bands and choirs where we worked together to achieve a common goal.

The trips out east or west where we tried to find our future, and the Kenya Service Trip where some of us looked to impact the lives of others. Student Council’s relentless pursuit of perfection was shown through Terry Fox Day, Semi-Formal, Talent Show, Black Knight, Spirit Week and Prom. From Grad X to the Model UN and Me to We, no one here could ever say they had nothing to do.

You may be asking what is the “CDS experience” that we have all enjoyed? Well, let me tell you it involves a great many things. The two most integral parts of the experience are the sense of community spirit that is created within the grounds and the

People may not realize, but these things are actually not in the job description and come from a genuine sense of caring for their students. It is this caring attitude that has helped us to mature as individuals, and we are truly grateful for all their efforts.

Also, let’s not forget about the people who really keep this school running – our wonderful school staff.

It is a testament to their skill and dedication that much of what happens with the school’s facilities, grounds and administration goes unnoticed. So, let’s give it up for the teachers and all the staff here at CDS. Well, my fellow grads, it is official, we are done with our high school years. I’ll never forget the laughs we shared and the memories made between us all. I will genuinely miss everything about every single person leaving us, from their weird quirks to their unmistakable laughs – these things are what make you who you are, so never change for anyone. We’ve been through a stressful year where you hear of nothing but

integrity and professionalism of the people who run this fine establishment.

We all benefit from the small class sizes and cozy classroom settings where we can learn with a more personal touch. As you can see, everyone here on my right [graduates] is now completely literate so we must be taking a step in the right direction. I’m sure all the grads have appreciated the chances we received to be tutored one-on-one or stay late for extra help when we have realized we don’t know nearly as much as we thought for an upcoming test. While the size of our graduating class is equivalent to a small circus, what we lack in size we make up with our love for each other. While that may be a bit of an exaggeration, I can honestly say that this whole grade has turned into the clichéd family.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents and families of the GYs. We feel that sending us to CDS was likely one of the best decisions you ever made for us. That said, CDS works so well because it is a community, and parents and families are a critical component of that community and a large part of its success. Mr. Liggett, the CDS teachers, support staff and our parents, on behalf of the 2013 Grads, many thanks for all that you have done for us.

You always go above and beyond and we wish you the very best. We will be proud to be CDS Alumni. The values you have instilled in us will remain with us throughout our lives, and we hope that the Class of 2013 will be remembered with fondness and pride.

Head of Visual Arts for both Middle and Senior Schools in July. Heather first joined the Visual Arts Department in 1998 and has served as the Advisor for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Program for the past three years.

Jennifer Naiman has assumed a new role as

Head of Library Services in the Middle and Senior Schools this fall. Mrs. Naiman joined CDS in 2008 as a teacher in the Modern Languages Department where she has been teaching senior French. Over the past five years, she has earned a reputation for her keen technical skills in her masterful work on our yearbook, The Meridian.

Eileen Paddags, a Junior Kindergarten teacher, and her husband, Michael, welcomed a baby daughter, Broghan Marie, on May 15.

David McFadden joined CDS in fall 2012 as an Josh Collins started at CDS in fall 2012 as an

David Drake joined CDS in fall 2012 as an

Associate Teacher assisting in our Middle and Senior science and math classes and coaching tennis and basketball. This fall he assumed a full-time load in math and science in the Middle School. Mr. Drake previously worked as a Teaching Assistant at Crestwood Preparatory College in Toronto and as a Senior School Science Teacher at Robert Clack School of Science in England. He holds a BA from the University of Guelph and a B.Ed. from Lakehead University.

Mary Fournier joined CDS in September

2012 as a Grade 3 teacher. No stranger to our community, she is a current parent whose son Adam graduated in 2012 and daughter Beth is in Grade 11. Mrs. Fournier has spent more than 20 years teaching in primary classrooms

Angela Loria joined CDS as the Human

Resources & Payroll Co-ordinator in the Business Office a year ago September. She is a Certified Human Resources Professional with many years of experience in her field. Her background includes working for both small and mid-sized companies across a range of industries such as manufacturing, not-forprofit and high-tech. Angela holds a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from York University’s Schulich School of Business and a Certificate in Human Resources Management from Seneca College. She lives in Aurora with her husband and two sons.

Peter Milonas, a physical education and health teacher in the Middle and Senior School, and his wife, Robin Bourgeau, welcomed a baby son, Maxton George, on June 14.

Andrea Switalski joined CDS in fall 2012 as an Associate Teacher in the Middle and Senior School, dutifully assisting in the Middle and Senior social science classrooms, and helping to coach hockey, basketball and tennis. This year she has taken on the responsibility of a number of Senior social science and business classes, with the balance of her time in the continued role of associate teaching. Ms. Switalski brings five years of teaching and hockey coaching experience at the competitive level, as well as several years experience coaching soccer. She holds a BA with Honours from Mount Allison University and a B.Ed. from the University of Ottawa.

Jennifer Wells joined the Community Rela-

tions Team in September 2012 in the new role of E-Communications Coordinator responsible for launching the School’s social media presence, gathering photos and news stories, and maintaining the website. She came to CDS from Victoria University in the University of Toronto, where she was an Alumni Affairs Assistant and Advancement Research Associate in the Office of Alumni Affairs and University Advancement. Jenn holds a B.Sc. in Biology and Bioarchaeological Anthropology from The University of Western Ontario.

COMMUNITY NEWS FACULTY AND STAFF MILESTONES

RETIREMENTS MAURENE MACAULAY Math Faculty MAURENE MACAULAY has been an educator for the past 30 years, 13 of which were spent at The Country Day School. When the faculty was invited to contribute some remarks about her time here, the most common response was, “She cares so much about her students.” Who else but Maurene would write a poem at the end of every school year for every class she taught, which included a mention of each student in the class? The effort she puts into making math fun for her students has always been extraordinary, even in her final year of teaching!

Maurene’s insistence on investigating the relevance of math, her attention to detail, and her desire to connect with each of her students was also evident each year in her Data Management final

exam. As an added twist, she would often present it as a journey, through a casino for example, and then incorporate the names of each of her students into the paper. This way the exam would unfold as a story, a genuine page-turner at that, instead of a disconnected collection of questions to be endured.

One colleague describes her quite simply as, “the best Math teacher I have ever met.” Her lessons and handouts are legendary for their neatness, organization and clarity. Her math classes also feature music (can we all hear the Quadratic Formula jingle in our heads right now?) and the occasional cartwheel, reported if not actually witnessed. Maurene will do whatever is necessary to instill understanding in her students. She cares deeply about the success of every one of them.

As a coach, she was perfectly suited to her Grade 7 Girls’ Volleyball team. Each of her players would take great pride in being presented with their season schedule, photocopied at just the right size to fit inside her locker door and held in place with a locker magnet, personalized by Maurene with the player’s name and number. Her dedication to her teams was also evident in her upbeat and heartfelt coach’s speeches at each Athletic Awards assembly.

Reflections from former students include the following: “When I first got into Grade 7, I was really nervous and she was so sweet and motherly.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever liked going to math class more than when I was taught by Mrs. Macaulay in Grade 7.”

“Her fudge is the best.”

Ah yes, her fudge. No deconstruction of Maurene’s career could be complete without mention of her fudge. A guaranteed moneymaker at bake sales and the annual silent auction, Mo’s fudge has to be sampled to be believed.

A great team player, an insightful colleague and a great friend, Maurene would take on all aspects of her work experience cheerfully. Her enthusiasm for math, her reliability as a faculty member and her unswerving dedication to her students’ successes will be deeply missed at The Country Day School.

RETIREMENTS DONNA CARSON Head of Library Services, Senior School DONNA CARSON shattered our pre-

conceived notions of librarians during her 12 years at CDS. She also transformed the library from what had been a silent room full of books into a vibrant space incorporating the best of both traditional and progressive learning modalities.

As the architect of the CDS Reads program, Donna celebrated the importance of daily reading, for both study and pleasure, throughout the entire community.

There is probably no better example of a lifelong learner found on campus.

Donna always strived to bring the latest technologies and research platforms to CDS, while always being mindful that newer doesn’t necessarily mean better.

Donna certainly deserves her share of the credit for how well prepared our graduates are with respect to note-taking techniques, essay preparation and the proper citation of resources.

In a school that trumpets education with balance, there is no finer example. In addition to tending to her mind, Donna is a leader in modeling good physical and

spiritual health as well. Upon entering the staff room, one would often find her building elaborate salads while discussing her latest running, cycling, yoga, or Pilates exploits. For years, the June cycling expedition would begin at Donna’s home in Caledon.

Our students share the following observations: “Mrs. Carson knows everyone’s name.

I have no idea how, but she knows every single person’s name.”

“She has so much enthusiasm for reading and knows everyone and what kind of books they like. It’s amazing how she knows what book you checked out and asks you how you liked it.”

“Her enthusiasm for books is so inspiring.”

Retirement seems the least appropriate word imaginable for Donna Carson. She will undoubtedly attach the same enthusiasm to the next phase of her life as she has to all of her experiences at CDS. She has transformed our library, and in doing so, has transformed the lives of the students who have used it.

Nick Arrigo Music Faculty Nick is the hardest working man in showbiz! He is a passionate and dedicated teacher who wants all of his students to love music as much as he does. He spends countless hours giving extra help to CDS students and has a well-deserved reputation for lending a helping hand whenever and wherever he can.

Walter Davison Director of Middle School Our school is a better place in no small measure because of Walter Davison. He is an expert teacher, an organized administrator, and one of the most loyal faculty members any school could ever wish for. In an age where it is easy to get carried away with ‘new’ ideas, we can always rely on Walter to bring a dose of common sense and humanity into the discussion.

The Original MacGyver THANK YOU GORD LYTLE FOR 25 YEARS OF SERVICE HEN YOU WANT to know something about The Country Day School’s past, present or future – ask Gord Lytle. If he doesn’t know the answer, he has the connections to find out. He has been here to witness the Physical Plant at CDS more than double in size. He was here when the Middle School was built to connect the Junior and Senior Schools, and when the PAC and the Dome were built. He has played a major role in the School’s development, and for many of his 25 years, was the lone man responsible for maintenance of the entire school.

Gord knows where everything is and how it all works. Whether it is making repairs to the century old Junior School Library, or adjusting the machinery that keeps the new Cyclone Dome inflated, Gord does it all. He’s the original MacGyver – he can fix anything. He probably could have patched the Titanic as long as he’d had his tool belt. All over the School we see evidence of his great skills and the pride and care he puts into his work every day.

Not only has Gord made his mark on the physical buildings but, even more importantly, he has made his mark on the CDS community and is a wonderful role model for our students. We wish for our children to find a career that makes them happy; we teach them to put their best effort into everything they do, to be a team player, to treat people with kindness and respect, and the importance of balance in life – blending work, friends and family. Gord lives these life lessons.

Gord’s colleagues have nothing but wonderful words for him. He makes a point to talk with everyone, especially if it has been a while, and he’s genuinely interested in your family and what you did on the weekend. Teachers share stories of when Gord would help set up science experiments late at night and, no matter what you asked, he would never say ‘no.’ This sentiment is shared by our parent volunteers and students.

He is quick to say ‘yes’ when they ask him for help, and to tell them something funny as he

walks away – service plus a smile. One group of students affectionately nicknamed him Hagrid because of his stature and friendly character. It does not take someone very long to find out that behind that Hagrid-like exterior, Gord is gentle, kind and caring. Gord is a man who never thinks of himself. Whatever surprises the day may bring, he is always ready and there to help.

Gord, you are one-of-a-kind. Selfishly, we hope you have many more years to come at CDS.

HOUGH THE ALUMNI EXECUTIVE has been around for a few years, I am most proud of the steps we have taken in just the last few months. We have added some new items to our calendar and are looking at initiating even more great events, programs and incentives.

At 41 years young, our alumni base is now getting to a point where we can begin to achieve great things. We have had the amazing support of the School, our new Alumni Executive Staff liaisons (Krista Koekkoek and Chris Edwards) and an expanded executive of passionate alumni who encompass our many generations.

It was so great to see all the alumni that were able to come back and visit for the 40th anniversary celebration last November. It was an amazing night with more than 400 in attendance. That is the kind of energy I would love to see come through with each and every event and program.

My goal is to keep our proud traditions, ideals and spirit strong while we continue to grow as alumni and to remember that the bonds between students, teachers and the School itself are just as important as they were 41 years ago.

Moving forward, our aim will be to reconnect with those with whom we have lost touch, hold fun annual events that will afford us an opportunity to be entertained while we engage in common interests, and develop a strong network for social connections as well as business or mentorship opportunities.

Her family relocated to Montreal after her first year, and Jennifer attended The Study for Middle School, before enrolling at Queen Margaret’s School, an equestrian universitypreparatory school for girls on Vancouver Island. She went on to get her Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy at Carleton University. During the summers, she worked for College Pro Painters as a franchisee, which she parlayed into a full-time job as General Manager in Ottawa and then Vice President in B.C. In 1994, she started Eberts Enterprises which she still runs today. Jennifer’s specialty is helping Canadian Franchises break into the U.S. and European markets. She lives on the Sunshine Coast outside Vancouver with her two boys, Lucas (10) and Paet (8), and enjoys traveling, biking, swimming, hiking and having a lot of fun with both of them!

Beth is currently the Manager of Marketing and Communications at the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in Toronto. Her role at the Foundation allows her to give back to the breast cancer community, a cause about which she is very passionate.

Olivia Gerardi ’03 recently obtained her Masters of Teaching from OISE-University of Toronto and completed her last teaching practicum with the Toronto District School Board, where she had an incredible experience working in the CATCH Classroom at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). Olivia is now pursuing a full-time teaching job and supply teaching at CDS.

Ikjyot Singh Kohli ’03 is in his final year of completing his Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics and Applied Mathematics at York University. He is currently doing research in Mathematical Cosmology and recently published a paper in the American Physical Society’s (APS) Physical Review, describing a model of the early universe shortly after the Big Bang. graduated from Georgian College with a diploma in Business Administration and then went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in Business Marketing from Griffith University in Australia. His first job after university was with an automotive software company in Ontario where he travelled across Canada installing software at dealerships. Rob then moved on to work in the marketing department of a steel manufacturer. After the economic downturn in 2008/2009, Rob decided to pursue getting his pilot’s license and now works for Perimeter Aviation as a pilot in Winnipeg. He married Jen Varty in September.

Deirdre Tait: At Home in the Junior School Deirdre Tait has spent more than half her life at CDS, both as a student in JK-Grade 8 and as a teacher since 1999. As one of the School’s first students, Deirdre arrived in 1973, one year after CDS opened. “I remember spending my first three years in the orange portable.

Back then the School stopped at the end of the long hallway, before the old gym was built when I was in Grade 7.”

Some of her other “Original” memories, include: • Favourite teachers were Miss Wry, Mr. Taylor and Miss Scott • Skinning a muskrat with Mr. Taylor and cooking the hind legs over an open fire, then spending the night with some classmates in the Longhouse on the property (she confesses to not having thrown out the skin until she left for university).

• CLUP (or clean up), a creation of Mr. Taylor, was something that happened when you were naughty, ranging from cleaning up to writing the words to ‘O Canada’ multiple times • Every family had a card number used for picking up their child in an orderly fashion.

Children would be called by their number, and you could identify a CDS family in the community by the number on their dashboard • Mr. Taylor conducting interviews and teaching while perched on his chair.

After graduating from Grade 8, Deirdre attended King City Secondary School where she focused most of her time training as a competitive skier on the Southern Ontario Ski Team. She attended Queen’s University for two years before deciding to pursue her Early Childhood Education (ECE) credentials at Seneca College. After finishing her ECE degree at Ryerson University, Deirdre obtained her B.Ed. from York University.

With a teacher’s degree in hand, Deirdre traveled to New Zealand where she taught and trained for two years. When the Director of the Junior School, Jim Bayler, called her several years later with an offer for a Grade 2 maternity leave position (Sheila McCutcheon), Deirdre readily accepted and hasn’t looked back.

“I loved this school as a student, and it was like coming home to be able to teach here.”

Deirdre was appointed as a full-time Grade 1 teacher where she remained for the next nine years.

Today, she is a valued member of the CDS Primary Division Learning Resource Team working with students from Grades 1-4. Deirdre lives in Newmarket with her husband, Stephen, and their Grade 4 and 2 aged daughters, Kayla and Sara, and welcomes the opportunity to visit with CDS Originals whenever possible!

Nicole Offen ’03

graduated with a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto in the spring. She has also completed the Veterinary Chiropractic program, a 200 hour course. Nicole took some time off to travel in Europe this summer, then started treating horses and shadowing an animal chiropractor in the fall while looking for a job as an associate or locum. She loves living in King and stays in touch with her CDS friends, especially Alix Begg ’03, who organizes and coaches the Toronto Polo Club Peewee Polo League.

Ethan Pancer ’03

received his Bachelor of Commerce degree from Queen’s University in 2007 and then stayed on to complete a Master of Science in Management, with a focus in marketing, in 2008. He has taught at Queen’s School of Business for the past three years and completed his Ph.D. in the spring. Ethan is now an assistant professor of marketing at the Sobey School of Business, Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, NS. He married Ann Manderville in January 2012, and they are excited to be starting their life together in Eastern Canada.

manages an architectural firm in the Beaches called Open Architects Inc. She completed her Master’s degree in Journalism and Communications in Sydney, Australia, in 2011 and is a freelance writer on the side. Tara and her fiancé, Adam Stein, are getting married next August on the Toronto Island, and CDS classmates Jill Brennan ’04 and Andrea MacMillan ’04 will be two of her bridesmaids.

(right) is a Research and Production Coordinator at Steam Films, a commercial production house in Toronto. Steam represents a roster of local and international directors. Jill has worked on a number of interesting jobs, including researching costs involved for shooting spots for Purina, Wiser’s Whiskey, and Magnum Ice Cream.

She keeps in contact with a few classmates from her graduating year, in particular Tara Benjamin ’04. Both Jill and Tara attended the Alumni Dinner at CDS last March.

Andrea MacMillan ’04 spent six years in Halifax after graduating from CDS where she completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Dalhousie University and an Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management at Nova Scotia Community College. After finishing her post-grad, she moved back to Toronto before travelling for six months in New Zealand, Australia, and South East Asia, where she met up with Shannon Bolak ’05 in Vietnam.

Since being back, she is living in downtown Toronto where she works as a Recruiter for an experiential marketing company called Inventa.

Katie Quinn ’04 was the General Manager of BMW Toronto for three and a half years before recently being promoted as Retailer Principal at BMW Grand River, Ont.; the youngest retailer in BMW Canada history.

As the daughter of a BMW car dealer, she has spent her summers and evenings working her way through every department since she was 14. The summer before she started university, Katie focused on learning how a dealership runs and discovered she has a penchant for sales. She went on to earn a B.Comm. in Marketing Management from the University of Guelph and recently completed an Executive MBA at Queen’s.

Renaissance Man Zach Pancer ’05 initially pursued Commerce at Queen’s University before switching to the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies, which he graduated from in 2010 with an Honours degree in Physical and Health Education. He then moved to Australia for medical school at the University of Wollongong in New South Wales. While pursuing his degree, Zach was elected President of the Medical Society, which allowed him to travel throughout most of the continent.

He recently moved to a town called Broken Hill in the Australian Outback to complete his training in a remote hospital and work with the Royal Flying Doctor Service. He is planning to complete his surgical elective at Oxford University, with the intention to ultimately work as an emergency physician or surgeon – he hasn’t decided which one yet! Rugby has continued to play a big part in his life. Zach was an OUA Academic All-Star on the Queen’s Rugby team, winning an Ontario championship in 2009. While at Queen’s, he also continued to play with the Aurora Barbarians, winning multiple Ontario Championships, and played at the national level with Team Ontario.

Playing rugby has afforded him an opportunity to do quite a bit of travel through various tours, including South Africa, Argentina, Hong Kong, and Australia. Zach still stays in touch with his CDS friends, and enjoys reliving the good ol’ times whenever he returns home!

Stacey Bruhm ’05 recently graduated with a Master’s degree from the University of Toronto’s Management & Professional Accounting program. She passed her final CA exam last December and is working as a Senior Staff Accountant at Ernst and Young in Toronto.

Emma recently finished working with Autism Ontario on their Social Skills Summer Institute for high-functioning adults with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome and is supply teaching at CDS this year.

Jacquie Noble ’06 is currently living in Perth, Australia, completing a Master of Forensic Science in Forensic Anthropology at the University of Western Australia. She graduated from the University of Toronto in 2010, and went on to complete a Master of Criminology at Bond University in Australia before moving to Perth. Jacquie hopes to return to Toronto after completing her research in Perth to pursue a Ph.D. in Forensic Anthropology.

Jen Mills ’07 is a new addition to the CDS faculty and will be teaching English in the Senior School this year. She was back on campus a year ago supply teaching with CDS English and Drama teacher, Gisa Bevacqua-Tirone, while completing her B.Ed. at OISE-University of Toronto.

Rachael (Eberts) Gray: Enjoys Life in the Big Apple Rachael (Eberts) Gray, Original attended CDS for Kindergarten before her family relocated to Montreal. She went on to attend Queen Margaret’s School in B.C., like her sister, Jennifer, and graduated in 1987. Rachael then attended Parsons School of Design in New York City where she studied Architecture and obtained a Masters of Architecture degree at Princeton University in 1996. She married Nicholas Gray the summer after she graduated and started her own architectural practice, Gray Partnership, as soon as she got home from her honeymoon. She has a great general practice based out of New York City that focuses on residential work, ranging from mixed-use development projects to very refined custom homes, has done projects across North America and really enjoys her work. Rufus and Tessa, their amazing twins, were born in 2004, and have filled their large loft with so much joy they cannot imagine life without them!

They were semi-finalists and Cailyn reports to have learned a great deal about marketing in a highly competitive industry. She has since moved to Toronto and is working for the advertising agency Rivet Global as an Account Coordinator on their Nestle account. She is passionate about digital marketing and web/digital design and aspires to be a creative director one day!

From CDS to World Champ Jordyn Rowntree ’11 was on the winning team representing Canada at the U-20 Nations Cup Women’s Rugby Tournament held in England in July. Canada defeated the United States 27-3 in the finals to win the cup. This was her first international experience and she says she could not have asked for a better one. According to Jordyn, highlights included meeting so many amazing people, from her teammates and coaches, to the management, and learning so much from all of them, while having the time of her life. Of course, winning the championship was a Jordyn with her Queen’s teammates memorable highlight as well. “We went to England to after winning the Nations Cup: win the Nations Cup, and we did!” (l-r) Nadia Popov, Lauren McEwen Jordyn is a third year Film Studies major and has and Jordyn played for the Queen’s University Rugby Team for the past two years where she typically plays as a flanker. Two of her Queen’s teammates, Nadia Popov and Lauren McEwen, were also selected to represent Canada. Jordyn and Nadia are both veteran players on the Aurora Barbarians team as well, which Jordyn joined the summer after Grade 12 playing on the junior team coached by Ontario Hall of Famer Gina Minutillo.

The qualifying process for the Canadian team started last October over the Thanksgiving weekend with an identification camp held at Royal Military College in Kingston attended by 150 hopefuls from the East. A similar tryout was held a few weeks later on the West coast.

After the camps, the roster was narrowed down to 40 women who attended the final tryout in May. On June 2nd the travelling roster for England was released and Jordyn had made the team. “I will never forget receiving the email at 10 pm on June 2nd to learn that I had made the list of girls to go to England. I screamed, then laughed, because I didn’t know how else to contain or express my happiness.”

Jordyn first took up the sport in Grade 9 at CDS after Coach Dean Sherman suggested she try out for the sport. While she did not play much in Grade 9 (she broke her collarbone in her first game), she fell in love with the sport and played for the rest of her CDS career. “I still wouldn’t know what a rugby ball is if it wasn’t for CDS,” she jokes. “Thanks to CDS and Barbarians, I tried out for the Queen’s team and made it! And then Queen’s led to Team Canada.

It’s been a lot of hard work, but I’ve loved it. I have been lucky to have amazing coaches and teammates that have made playing and loving rugby so easy.”

Sports Opens doors for Promising Athlete Corey Kalk ’12 has played Junior A hockey for the North York Rangers for the past two seasons and recently committed to Dartmouth College in New Hampshire to play Division 1 hockey starting in the fall of 2014.

While at CDS, Corey played hockey for the school teams from Grades 8-12. He also participated in soccer, basketball, rugby and tennis at the CISAA level, helping CDS to win CISAA championships in both hockey and soccer. Corey feels fortunate to have had a lot of people believe in him and offer him the support and instill the confidence to follow his dreams. Among them were his parents and grandparents, as well as some of his teachers and coaches at CDS, including Mr. Andersen, Mr. MacMillan and Mr. Milonas, and his current Coach at North York, John Dean.

According to Corey, last year was a breakout season starting with an invitation to the final selection camp for Canada East in the 2012 World Junior A Challenge. Later in the season, he represented the South Division in the Central Canada Cup AllStar weekend, won the Junior A South Division Player of the Month for December, became a 2nd team All-Star, and was Runner-up as Most Improved Player in the Ontario Junior Hockey League. Corey finished in the top five in scoring and was also the leading goal scorer in the OJHL playoffs.

He attributes most of his success to the overall success of his team. The Rangers made it to the conference finals, something they had not done in more than a decade.

Corey was first introduced to Dartmouth College at a NCAA draft scouting combine held in Toronto in spring 2012. There were 15-20 NCAA Division 1 and Division 3 coaches in attendance and one of his coaches at the combine was a coach and recruiter for Dartmouth. He invited Corey to attend a prospect camp later that summer. While a few other schools approached him with similar opportunities, Corey set

his sights on Dartmouth from the beginning because it offered a great education and had a similar feel to The Country Day School – intimate and warm. A few months later, one of the Dartmouth coaches came to watch one of Corey’s games. Shortly thereafter, Corey was admitted to Dartmouth and offered a spot on the hockey team beginning in the fall of 2014.

Some readers unfamiliar with the current state of affairs in Division 1 US college hockey may be wondering why a player graduates from high school in June 2012, yet does not begin university play until the fall of 2014. This is currently the norm for US D1 hockey – freshmen are now 20 years old, not 18, and they are generally expected to play one or two additional years of Junior Hockey before starting college or university.

Accordingly, Corey was presented with a number of options for the 2013-14 season. Although he was drafted this summer by the Waterloo Black Hawks to play in the USHL in 2013-2014, he has decided to return to the Rangers for another season in the hopes of winning it all.

Previously a forward for the University of Florida Gators last season, Adriana played briefly for the Breakers before being traded to the Chicago Red Stars in July. She finished the season playing in all 10 remaining games for Chicago and is currently completing her studies at the University of Florida.

JOHN PRATT The Country Day School’s First Headmaster

OHN PRATT, The Country Day School’s first Headmaster, passed away on February 21, 2013 in Montreal at the age of 76. He opened the doors of CDS in September 1972 with 49 students after being hired to conduct a year-long feasibility study to determine whether an independent school in King would be viable. John served as the founding Headmaster from 1972-76 and helped to create a school philosophy based largely on the development of the student as an individual; something that continues to be the School’s primary focus today.

Whether he was driving the school bus, answering the phone in the main office, sweeping up the glass from a broken thermos, or searching through the Lost and Found for an anxious parent – John did it all in those early years, with the help of many dedi-

In an article in a January 1972 edition of The Era newspaper, John cited the following quotation from the British “Plowden Report” of 1967: “Children need to be themselves, to live with other children, to learn from their environment, to enjoy the present, to get ready for the future, to create and to love, to learn to face adversity, to behave responsibly, in a word, to be human beings.”

John was a graduate of Bishop’s College School and Bishop’s University, both in Lennoxville, QC, where he earned a BA degree in English & History and his teaching qualifications. He also held a Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Denver and a Master of Education from Columbia University.

John had taught at the Senior School level at Trinity College School and Bishop’s College School prior to coming to CDS. A sports enthusiast his entire life, he was a recipient of the Bishop’s University Golden Mitre Award and inducted to its RBC Wall of Distinction for outstanding achievements in football, skiing, hockey, leadership and contributions to school life in the ’50s.

In the words of the late Jane Hayes, CDS’ second Board Chair and a past parent, “Your persuasive ability, against all odds, opened Country Day School’s doors. Such is your faith, vitality and farsightedness, that what was first an idea, and then a fact, is now a going concern and an established independent school. Lots of people can organize, many are able to teach, but to only a few is given the ability to take an idea and work it through to reality.”

John is survived by his three children Robert (Nicky), Julia (Tim) and Jennifer (Kirby), his brother Robin Pratt (Francine), six grandchildren and his dear friend Madeleine.
