City Clerk Jim Dear Unable to Fend Off Recall Election
By James Thomas Carson City Clerk Jim Dear and his supporters were unable to fend off the second recall election of his 14 year political career.
With all 30 of Carson’s precincts reporting and vote by mail ballots counted, the controversial former mayor was removed from office by 53.8 percent of the vote. Voter turnout was just more than 16 percent, said Sue Herbers, a retired Torrance city clerk brought in to administer the recall election.
In September he lost a court battle when the city obtained a restraining order against him and friends he brought to work for support and was censured in a unanimous city council vote in October.
The city is now seeking criminal charges against him because officials believe he only left the mayor’s Jim Dear seat to boost his pension from the full-time clerks position.
Carson residents also united in their vote to reinstate Donesia Gause, the former City Clerk Dear beat in the March 2015 election.
Gause was appointed to a City Council seat that she now must relinquish to return to her former full time job. Carson city council members will decide whether to appoint her replacement or call for a special election.
Dear, had become a major distraction for the city council, residents and city employees who feared working with him. More than
12,000 residents petitioned the city to hold the recall election, which cost about $200,000.
The part-time mayor’s job pays $22,735 a year while the clerk’s position pays about $130,000, allowing Dear to increase his annual retirement from $12,276 to $66,374.
Dear, won the mayor’s seat three times beginning in 2004 and was known to attend any event, public or private, and never shied away from making a political appeal. Councilwoman Gause and her supporters celebrated her victory at the Carson Doubletree Hotel.
Carson City Councilwoman Donesia Gause after learning she would be returning to the City Clerk position after Jim Dear was recalled by Carson residents.
Assemblymember Mike Gipson Issues Statement in Support of CSU Faculty
(SACRAMENTO) –
Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson) released a statement today standing in support of CSU faculty in their push for a
five percent raise. The California Faculty Association (CFA), representing over 20,000 CSU faculty, has embarked on a campaign called “Five for Five,” which will involve a five-day strike unless a compromise can be reached.
“I stand with the CFA in their push to improve the living standards of educators and faculty within the CSU system. Ensuring adequate compensation must be a top priority if the system intends to attract the best talent to support the growth and development of the CSU mission. Severe budget cuts
and wage stagnation came on the back of the 2008 financial crisis, but now we are on a path of fiscal strength and need to reach out and ensure faculty are included in our economic recovery.
Given that there are about half a million lives that actively benefit from or contribute to the CSU, the Chancellor needs to step up and come to an expeditious resolution.
The livelihood of too many people depends on this and we cannot afford the collateral damage that will follow if it leads to an unfair deal for faculty.”
