Captains defeat Rowan

A return to winning ways

TREY GREENWELL

TRAJAN.GREENWELL.21@CNU.EDU

The Captains defeated Rowan University 24-7, improving the Captains record to 3-3 on the season.

The game occurred during Homecoming Weekend, where parents, students and alumni of Christopher Newport University were in attendance. They were rewarded with a Captains victory in a game that was hardly in doubt.

The Captains received the

ball first and punted. However, a muffed punt from Rowan was recovered by the Captains and put them at the Rowan seven yard line.

On the very next play, sophomore quarterback Connor Barry found junior wide receiver Trey Hayes to give the Captains the lead.

On the next possession, the Captains continued to capitalize on miscues made by Rowan. While Rowan was able to drive the football down to the goal line, they were unable to score as a fumble by sophomore running back Nunes Bukula IV was recovered by the

Captains deep in their own territory.

With the Captains offense working from their own end zone, they embarked on a lengthy drive. Back to back first downs from junior running back Gunner White and junior wide receiver Colin Hart put the Captains in better field position. The passing game worked smoothly as three consecutive completions made from Barry to Hart, White, and sophomore tight end Jayson Viernes put the Captains at the Rowan goal line. kicker Maxx Lawton made a 23 yard field goal.

Next Generation Storytellers: Bridging the gap

Christopher Newport University hosted the Next Generation Storytellers (NGS) Film Festival this past weekend in the Ferguson Center of the Arts. NGS was founded by American actors Trent Garrett and Jacob Young, who aimed to create a program that would allow students in underserved communities an opportunity to experience the Hollywood magic of the film industry.

“Our goal at Next Generation storytellers is simple, but it’s powerful. To help young people tell their stories, especially those who are underrepresented in the entertainment industry,” Young said.

The premiere was held in Peebles Theatre on Oct. 18 which showcased 11 student-lead films from 13 high schools in Hampton Roads and Charleston, South Carolina. On Oct. 19, a matinee showcasing the 11 films and award ceremony was held. The ceremony included presenting one particular NGS junior/senior a $16,000 scholarship to CNU if they choose to attend. On Oct. 20, there was one final screening of the films to the general public.

Aftermath

of Hurricane Milton

Tropical storm devastates the East coast

CLAIRE HALL

CLAIRE.HALL.22@CNU.EDU

The United States has had its fair share of tropical storms and hurricanes for the 2024 season. The Center for Disaster Philanthropy stated that “there have been 13 named storms, including 4 tropical storms and nine hurricanes” (2024). The most recent hurricane of the season, Milton, became the second most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded over the Gulf of Mexico according to Vogue.

Milton had already started forming in the Atlantic two weeks after hurricane Helene made landfall across the Appalachia area. Milton had fluctuated in intensity after an eyewall replacement cycle, which made the hurricane re-intensified into a Category 5 the following day. However, due to the increasing wind shear, the hurricane weakened as it turned to Florida, turning into a Category 3 hurricane before making landfall in the Siesta Keys.

After making an impact in the Siesta Keys, the National Hurricane Center examined that the hurricane would affect several parts of Florida, including the heavily populated Tampa Bay region, St. Petersburg, Sarasot and Fort Myers. These were the areas that were going to be hit heavily with rain, flooding and extreme winds.

Residents of these areas were advised to evacuate multiple days leading up to Milton’s landfall. However, before individuals decided to evacuate, they prepared their homes for the destruction about to come.

Days leading up to hurricane Milton, grocery stores were empty as shelves were completely cleared of water, bread and easy to cook meals. Not only were grocery stores empty, but gas stations in surrounding areas were also reportedly out of gas. This left many individuals without a way to evacuate from the homes because they did not have enough gas to get them to safety. People started hunkering down in their bathrooms, closets and basements to stay safe during the storm.

The majority of Florida was hit with intense winds, extreme flooding and spawned in about 41 or more tornadoes according to USA Today. This left a path of extreme destruction to areas such as Tampa Bay and Sarasota. According to CBS News, 75% of individuals in Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Manatee were reported having no electricity during and after the hurricane. WNKY News reported on Oct. 21 that the death toll in Florida for Milton stands at approximately 32 individuals.

Hurricane Milton was one of the most detrimental hurricanes to ever hit Florida. Many people still lack access to clean water, food and continue to be displaced. If you are able to give these communities some relief, visit; greatergood.org to help individuals rebuild their lives.

Israel-Hamas War: One Year Later

Life a year after the war began

According to AP news, Hamas’ attack from the Gaza Strip to Israel broke right after the attack on Oct. 7, 2023. More than 1,200 deaths were caused as a result of this attack, making it one of the deadliest days in Israel’s history.

The history of unrest between Palestine and Israel set the stage for the war. Hamas attacked Israel after over 70 years of ethnic cleansing and turmoil between Israel and Palestine. However, their attack sparked the fire that became the Israel-Hamas War. After Hamas’ attack, Israel sent a counter-strike in full force.

Oct. 7, 2024 marked one year of the IsraelHamas War. A year later, devastation has swept the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Homes and livelihoods have been destroyed by Israeli bombs and the Palestinians who are still alive are facing inhumane conditions. Famine, displacement of families and other detriments to their health are growing more common as days progress.

As of Oct. 20, 2024, the death toll sits at just under 43,000 Palestinian casualties and just under 1,200 Israelis. Over the past year, roughly 1.9 million Palestinians have been displaced out of their 2.2 million population.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other allied nations have met to discuss calling a mandatory ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. A year later, there has not been an official ceasefire called.

In a statement earlier this year, the Biden Administration has proposed an effort for aid in Gaza. President Biden stated this proposal is “one that brings all the hostages home, ensures Israel’s security, creates a better ‘day after’ in Gaza without Hamas in power and sets the stage

for a political settlement that provides a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.” Israeli forces killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar on Oct. 16, 2024. President Biden issued a statement referring to the death of Yahya Sinwar, “... a day of relief and reminiscence.” People hoped for a definite end to the Israel-Hamas War upon his death, but there have been no certain signs of a permanent ceasefire between the two states.

Upcoming: Students for Life speech on abortion sparks protest

SFL Spokesperson speaks at PLP Discovery Event

On Oct. 22, CNU hosted PLP Discovery speaker Lydia Taylor Davis, a pro-life spokesperson for the Students For Life organization. The speech was held in CNU’s David Student Union building, which was a part of her ‘Abortion is Violence’ tour.

Before the event, Davis was seen tabling and speaking with students outside of Trible Library.

During and following the speech, the Planned Parenthood GenAct club held a counterprotest. Protesters were encouraged to wear pink to show their support, but were reminded to be prepared for potential confrontations.

Abortion and women’s healthcare has been a continuingly prominent issue on the ballot every year. Similar protests and events have been had on CNU’s campus in the past. The Captain’s Log will have a more detailed analysis of the situation in the next issue of the paper.

Countdown to November: Polling results

and more

As of October 22, ABC’s Project FiveThirtyEight (538) reported that democratic party nominee and vice president Kamala Harris leads in the polls by 1.9% at 48.2%, a raise in contrast to previous polling. 538 also reported that former president and republican party

nominee Donald Trump sits at 46.3% in the national polls.

Harris recently called out Trump on her Instagram account saying “Donald Trump is a serious threat to the security and livelihood of Latino men and their families.”

The post also includes bullet points from what life was like under Trump’s presidency for many Latino Americans and the effects Trumps Project 2025 Agenda will have on Latino Americans.

Trump recently made an appearance at the 11th Hour Faith Leaders meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina on Oct. 21. He gave a “speech to the largely Christian audience focused on school choice, gender issues and religious liberty” according to Deseret News.

However, during the entirety of his speech, Trump did not mention abortion, which has been a key issue for many voters.

CNBC reported that Trump also recently ‘worked’ at a McDonald’s restaurant in Feasterville, Pennsylvania. The shift was used as a way to attack his opponent, Harris, as he often claims she lied about her time working at a McDonald’s. During his time, he operated the fry cooker and spent time working at the drive-thru.

“Though we are not a political brand, we’ve been proud to hear former President Trump’s love for McDonald’s and Vice President Harris’s fond memories working under the Arches,” McDonald’s said according to CNBC.

International Affairs Update:

Italy surrogacy laws

Last week, Euro News reported that Italy extended its 2004 ban on surrogacy to criminalizing couples for seeking surrogacy abroad. The bill’s decision, originally presented by Parliament member Caroline Varchi, came from a seven hour debate in Parliament.

The law stated that “anyone who carries out, organizes or advertises the commercialization of gametes, embryos or surrogacy” could face three months to two years in prison and a minimum fine of €600,000,” according to Euro News.

Lega, a right-wing conservative political party in Italy, lawmakers proposed that the new amendment to the ban should increase “the penalties to 10 years in prison and a €2 million fine.”

While this proposal was rejected, the new law does extend punishment to those who seek surrogacy abroad.

This decision has been promoted by the nation’s ruling political party Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy), which claims the ban is to protect “women’s dignity” and surrogates by protecting “the relationship between biological parents and their children.”

Many in opposition of the ban suggest that the ban specifically targets to punish LGBTQ+ couples.

Conflict in the Middle East

The death toll in the Israel-Hamas war continues to rise everyday. Reuters reported on Oct. 22 that an Israeli airstrike killed at least 18 people and roughly 60 others were injured near Beirut’s primary hospital. The Israeli military stated that the hospital was not the prime target, nor was it affected by the strike.

Countries report new cases of monkeypox virus

Reuters reported on Oct. 22 that both Germany and Norway recently reported cases of a variant of the infectious viral disease monkeypox (mpox). Other countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sweden, Thailand and others have also reported cases of mpox within the past several weeks.

Captains defeat Rowan

Story continued from cover

The Captains were able to build onto their lead when sophomore kicker Maxx Lawton made a 23 yard field goal.

After the Captains defense forced a Rowan punt, the offense returned to the field. Multiple conversions including a completed pass from Barry to White on fourth down kept the drive alive. The offense’s efforts were rewarded with a 23 yard touchdown reception from Colin Hart that gave the Captains a 17-0 lead. A defensive stop on the subsequent possession helped preserve the Captains lead heading into the half.

The Captains continued to capitalize on Rowan errors. On the

first possession of the second half, Rowan received the ball and made multiple key third down conversions as well as one on fourth down that put them deep into Captains territory. However, a fumble from running back Tyshawn Bookman on fourth down led to a turnover on downs and the Captains offense to take possession at their own 10 yard line.

The sole Rowan score came after a fumble from sophomore running back Jordin Lennon was recovered by their defense. A six play, 29 yard drive ended with a touchdown run from freshman quarterback Matt Wesley that cut the Captains lead to ten.

While the Captains defense was the driving force in maintaining their lead, the offense made sure that these efforts would not go unnoticed. After a turnover on downs from Rowan late in the fourth quarter, the Captains offense took the field with two minutes and 50 seconds left in the game. With the game still hanging in the balance, the Captains offense made sure to eliminate any doubt as a rushing touchdown from Gunner White sealed the victory. Up next, the Captains (3-3) will face Kean University (2-4) in Union, New Jersey on October 26. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Yankees and Dodgers reach World Series

TREY GREENWELL

TRAJAN.GREENWELL.21@CNU.EDU

The New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers will play in the World Series which begins play on Friday.

The Yankees ended their 15-year World Series drought with a 5-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians. A go-ahead home run by outfielder Juan Soto in the tenth inning helped propel the Yankees to the fall classic. When the final out was made by relief pitcher Luke Weaver, it ended years of frustration for both the players and the city.

While 15 years does not feel like a long time for most teams, it is an eternity for the Yankees. A franchise with 41 American League pennants and 27 World Series championships is used to being great often. While Yan-

A matchup for the ages

kees teams of previous campaigns were able to reach the American League Championship Series, they were never able to advance further. Their appearance in the World Series can end a string of bitter moments the team has

endured over the last decade and a half.

The Dodgers have been due to return to the World Series for quite some time. The addition of two-way star Shohei Ohtani only added to the high expectations the team

already had. After multiple National League Divisional Series exits, the Dodgers made it clear that this season was World Series or bust. While the Dodg-

ers have succeeded in reaching the World Series, the expectation is to win it.

Although most of their key players have been recent ad-

“The Dodgers will be hoping to live up to the billing of their All-Star lineup while the Yankees will be looking to add one more flag to the history books.”

ditions, the Dodgers have reached the World Series recently. Their last appearance was in the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign when the team finished with a 43-17 record and defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in six games to win their first World Series since 1988. With a star-studded lineup and a strong bullpen, the Dodgers are hoping to replicate their 2020 success.

This World Series will be fun to watch. Both teams will be entering Friday with hefty expectations placed on their shoulders. The Dodgers will be hoping to live up to the billing of their All-Star lineup while the Yankees will be looking to add one more flag to the history books. Overall, the history and starpower of both franchises will make this World Series one to remember.

Oregon claims top spot

Historic movement at the top continues

TREY GREENWELL

TRAJAN.GREENWELL.21@CNU.EDU

For the first time in 12 years, Oregon has moved up to the No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press top 25 poll. This came off of the teams 35-0 road win over Purdue.

The last time the Ducks had the top ranking was during the 2012 season when Chip Kelly was the head coach and Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota was under center. The team started 10-0 and had the number one ranking for a single week in November before losing to Stanford the following week.

However, there were other changes in the poll that could change the landscape of college football. The biggest one was the Tennessee Volunteers, who moved up four places to No. 7 after a 27-14 victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide. In contrast, the Crimson Tide have dropped to No. 15 in the polls after losing their second straight game. This is the lowest they have ranked since 2010.

The other notable

Autzen Stadium, home of the University of Oregon Ducks football, during a 2007 regular season game between the USC Trojans and the Duck; it was the first time two top-10 teams had played at Autzen in its 41-year history and broke the stadium attendance with 59,277. The Ducks, slightly favored, won the game: 24-17. Oregon Autzen UOentrance by Bobak Ha’Eri is licensed under the CC BY-SA Attribution 3.0 Deed

“The last time the Ducks had the top ranking was during the 2012 season when Chip Kelly was the head coach and Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota was under center.”

change is the Texas Longhorns, who dropped from No. 1 to No. 5 after a 30-15 loss to Georgia. The loss was an ugly one for the Longhorns as they benched junior quarterback Quinn Ewers for freshman quarterback Arch Manning during the game. The Longhorns had been tipped by many to stay at the top after their 34-3 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners. However, their defeat means that this season will be the first since 2012 that four teams will play a regular season game as the top team.

While the AP polls do change every week, there has never been consistent movement at the top. With conference realignment coming into effect this season, good programs play each other more often which can lead to chaos. This will only become more of a factor as the season progresses, with arguments centering around who deserves to make the expanded 12team College Football Playoff becoming more prominent in the coming weeks.

Here’s What You Missed!

1) The New York Liberty became WNBA Champions after a 67-62 overtime victory over the Minnesota Lynx.

2) New York Jets pass rusher Haason Reddick has agreed to a reworked contract after a lengthy holdout.

3) Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard will be out indefinitely with right knee inflammation.

Next Generation Storytellers: American actors ‘bridge the gap’ between the film industry and storytellers of tomorrow

BREANNA.DORRIAN.23@CNU.EDU

The films are also going to be featured at the 2024 Virginia Film Festival.

During the initial premiere on Oct. 18, the energy and excitement was palpable and contagious. The young, aspiring actors, actresses and producers cheered as student films such as Best Picture award winning ‘Untitled Artist.’

“This week is about celebrating you guys, you girls, you everyone, celebrating creativity, passion and the voices that are shaping the future of storytelling, establishing your own,” Garrett said.

NGS student actor Antonio Pitts from Hampton City Schools was the recipient of the $16,000 scholarship for his lead performance in the comedy film “Omelette Sunday.” The film also won Best Comedy, written by Nolan Ladison, who intends to transfer to CNU next semester. The Newport News Public Schools arts department was also awarded a $1,500 check for their arts program on behalf of the Virginia Film Office. The program is held via interactive zoom meetings over a 24 week period. The first eight weeks serve as a chance for students to work on their screenwriting skills. The next six weeks focus on pre-production, then move into six weeks of actual production. The final four weeks include post-production work. The program also grants students a valid IMDB credit to add on to their portfolio.

Charming and charismatic, the Hampton area native Garrett has over 15 years of film and acting experience including starring on hit television shows such as Disney Channel’s “Andi Mack,” and guest starring on other shows such as Fox’s “New Girl.” His primary focus is on developing the storytelling aspect of the film industry.

Calculated and thoughtful, Young has made his mark on both Broadway and the film industry. He is an Emmy award winner and has had seven Emmy nominations. Although Young focuses primarily on the production aspect of the film industry, he has an extensive acting career including his role as Lumiere on Disney’s Broadway production of “Beauty and the Beast.”

Garrett and Young met roughly 15 years ago on the set ABC’s American Sitcom “All My Children” where Garrett sought the help of Young to memorize lines. The two were friends for several years, but disconnected as time went on. However, roughly six years ago during Garrett’s time filming Disney show “Andi Mack,” the two reconnected when they happened to run into each other at an airport in Salt Lake City, Utah.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Garrett recalls both him and Young going ‘stir crazy’ and felt there was no better time than that moment to start creating something. The end goal was always intended to be something that gave back to the community, specifically underserved towns and cities. The usage of Google Meets and Zoom calls for remote learning during the pandemic became an opening for the two founders to connect Hollywood to small towns.

“We want every child to have the opportunity to create,” Young said.

During the opening night of the premiere, Garrett and Young thanked those involved in the process of developing the program, including the young storytellers.

“It’s incredible to see how much this program has grown, and we’re excited about what’s to come as we continue to build opportunities for young filmmakers,” Garrett said.

CNU’s very own sophomore Wilkes Ferguson participated in the NGS trial program with CNU, where he was given the opportunity to participate in the documentary series being filmed about NGS. The documentary follows NGS as they produce, shoot and act in their films. It also covers the events that took place at CNU this past weekend. The documentary has not been released yet, but is in the process of being sold to a studio to help fund the program’s expansion.

During the red carpet film premiere, Ferguson interviewed the students on their participation in the films, how they felt seeing their films on a big screen for the first time, their expectation for the awards ceremony and what they hoped to pursue in the future after the program. During the

Awards Ceremony, he interviewed each winner on the impact winning had on them.

“Their joy and enthusiasm for filmmaking was infectious and it has truly inspired me to continue to work on my own projects,” Ferguson said.

Documentary professor Jim Anklam offered Ferguson the opportunity to work with the NGS documentary team at the Film Festival just 24 hours before the event began. Despite not having any “on-camera” experience, Ferguson agreed because it seemed like a fun way to gain experience.

“It was definitely a fun experience and I got to meet a lot of talented people who taught me a lot about the filmmaking process,” Ferguson said.

NGS documentary team lead Andy Flint told Ferguson everything he needed to know to be successful. He was able to work with a steady cam during the ceremony, an expensive specialized camera to smooth involuntary movement in footage.

“I had never actually been on camera in any official manner, so I had to figure out all that goes into

that,” he said. “It was also really inspiring to see all the student films and learn about the students’ experiences writing, directing and acting in movies.”

Ferguson stated his favorite part of the whole experience was being able to interview Pitts, the $16k scholarship recipient, before and after the awards ceremony. Ferguson said Pitts seemed rather nervous and wasn’t convinced he’d win anything. However, after winning the scholarship and his film receiving the ‘Best Comedy’ award, he said he felt he truly had a chance at pursuing acting as a career.

“It was really encouraging to see the excitement and joy he had for acting and filmmaking,” Ferguson said.

One Direction star Liam Payne dead at 31

Fans gather around the world to grieve

On October 16, 2024, former One Direction star Liam Payne suddenly died after falling over the balcony of his third-floor hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The British singer visited Argentina to attend Niall Horan’s concert earlier that month.

TMZ covered the incident not long after the accident, reporting the police presence at the hotel and the ambulance escorting his body to the nearby hospital morgue. Witnesses at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel told TMZ it was Liam Payne before officials could confirm the artist’s identity.

A 911 call was uncovered in which hotel management reported a disruptive guest, seemingly under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and expressed concern about his room’s balcony. The guest was reported for his misbehavior and breaking hotel property. We learned shortly afterward that the guest was Liam Payne.

An investigation was opened into his death, where city authorities found alcohol and other substances in his hotel room. ABC News reports that Payne had multiple drugs in his body at the time of his death, including crack, cocaine, benzodiazepine and “pink cocaine,” a drug that is typically a mix of methamphetamine, ketamine, MDMA and other substances. Today News announced Payne’s autopsy report was shared with them by the Argentina National Prosecutor’s Office, declaring he died

from “polytrauma and internal and external bleeding”. Payne’s father has arrived in Buenos Aires, where legally a family member needs to confirm the body’s identity before it is released back to the United Kingdom.

Fans all over the world have expressed their deepest sorrows over his sudden death. While celebrities and other artists have written Instagram posts mourning the late artist, fans awaited responses from other One Direction members. Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and the One Direction Instagram page broke their silence to express their heartbreak and sympathies for Payne’s family.

Payne left behind a 7-year-old son, a family, friends, and millions of fans. Fans have gathered at vigils around the world - from London to Manila - to grieve, sing, and cry in memory of the former One Direction star. The BBC reports that police estimated that between 800 and 1,000 people gathered in London’s Hyde Park on Sunday to remember the 31-year-old who died after falling from the third floor of a hotel balcony in Argentina. The crowd sang One Direction songs, such as the chart-topping hit What Makes You Beautiful, with many fans in tears.

The investigation into Payne’s death is still ongoing.

Top 5 Disney Channel Halloween-themed episodes

Celebrate spooky season with these throwbacks

ALYSSA.TILLMAN.22@CNU.EDU

Disney Channel is best known for offering seasonal content in the form of their Disney Channel Original Movies and shows. People may write off Disney Channel Halloween episodes as too childish to watch now as an adult, but these episodes are perfect for spooky season. Disney Channel has been creating unique, spooky, and sometimes even hilarious Halloween episodes of their best shows, year after year. With Halloween around the corner, here are the top five Disney Channel Halloween episodes.

1. Sonny With A Chance: “A So Random Halloween Special” This episode focuses on Halloweenthemed sketches. One of the most memorable includes Sonny and Tawni as employees in a store similar to Trader Joe’s as they deal with monsters instead of regular customers. In the usual sketches themed around Trader Joe’s, the two aren’t the most effective retail employees. When faced with potential monsters, their skills seem even worse, whether they even notice they’re dealing with monsters or not.

2. Jessie: “The Whining” “The Whining” offers a kid-friendly and funny version of something adults will appreciate: The Shining. The horror movie has been one of the most loved for decades, and there have been plenty of parodies or nods to it within the horror genre. Children’s programs don’t usually attempt something like this. This episode sees the Ross kids plan on trick-or-treating on the 13th floor of their building after an old doorman tells them a story about a “crazed nanny” who once lived there. Just as they get into the Halloween spirit, however, they get a little scared, only to find Jessie in a scary costume and start to think she might be following in the footsteps of the other nanny.

3. ANT Farm: “mutANT Farm 3”

Each season of ANT Farm features one chapter of the “MutANT Farm” episodes. While the first two are played like fantasy sequences featuring monstrous versions of the main characters, like China Anne McClain playing a Medusa, the final

chapter, which aired during the final season of the show, reveals that these monstrous versions of the characters are actually from an alternate universe.

4. Wizards Of Waverly Place: “Halloween”

Wizards of Waverly Place gave fans a fun and memorable Halloween episode in season 3 of the series. In the episode, The Russos are being threatened with having their haunted house segment taken away from them because it’s not entertaining enough for the neighborhood. Alex is determined to change that this year, so she visits the wizarding world to get some real monsters for their haunted house. The monsters aren’t as scary as Alex hoped, so she and Harper go back to the wizarding world to find the scariest monster of all: “Mantooth.” The episode acted as a great way to combine Alex’s usual antics involving magic with her desire to help her family and a few Halloween scares.

5. Hannah Montana: “Torn Between Two Hannahs”

In the episode, Miley gets an unexpected visit from her look-a-like cousin, Luann. But the visit turns ugly when Luann dresses as Hannah Montana and attends her wealthy friend Tracie’s Hannah-themed Halloween party in the hopes of exposing Miley’s secret to everyone. It’s one of the earliest episode to demonstrate the very real stakes of Miley’s secret identity being exposed, though it does it with the usual Disney Channel cheesiness of an identical cousin.

LIFESTYLE Heartache to happiness

How to get over a breakup

Breakups suck. They’re hardly ever easy and more often than not they flip our lives upside down. However, just because they suck doesn’t mean they have to suck forever. Whether it’s a breakup with friends or a romantic partner or even a situationship, there’s ways to overcome it.

1: Feel your feelings

Your feelings are valid, first and foremost. Human emotion is natural and is meant to be felt. Bottling them up does you no good, I promise you are not burdening those around you by talking it out. Let yourself be sad. Even if the breakup is a result of something you did, you have to learn to face your feelings. If you always fold at the poker table before the dealer shows his hand, you’ll never learn how to play the game. You have to embrace the suck. Even if it’s hard and miserable. Let yourself cry or let yourself be happy. You shouldn’t feel ashamed of your emotions, whether you’re happy or sad or somewhere in between. Your feelings are natural and they deserve to be felt.

2: Avoid the social media stalking

We’ve all been there. You want to see what they’re doing, who they’re with. You want to see if they’re happy without you. Speaking from experience, I promise this does nothing but prolong the process. Now is a time of focusing on yourself. Checking their feed, checking their tagged photos, checking if their snap score went up or who they’re now following is only going to make you more miserable. It feels impossible, but you have to find a way to protect your own peace. As they say, ignorance is bliss.

3: Find a new focus

Feeling your feelings is important, but don’t stay there too long. Finding a new focus can be a great step in the healing process, whether it’s focusing on your classes, your job, working out more or finding a new hobby. Especially if this person or these people were once the main occupants of your free time,

it can be a hard adjustment living without them. Instead of dwelling on no longer being with them, find something that can distract you in a healthy way.

4: Reflect

Every experience is a chance to learn and grow. Maybe you realize that you want to surround yourself with different people. Maybe you caused the rift and you learn to be more mindful of your actions. Whatever it is, learn from it and grow. When you’re out of the initial brunt, overwhelming initial emotion, looking back on the situation with a clear mind can be a great way to help learn from the situation.

5: Move on

No, moving on is not easy. It’s really hard. No, the process is not linear. Some days you may be so thankful that it’s over and other days you may feel a tug that makes you miss them. It’s also okay to not miss them, but to miss the person they used to be or miss the experiences you had with them. There are plenty of people in my own life whom I am so thankful that they are not a part of my life anymore. I do not miss the person they are now, quite frankly I would naturally avoid that person at all costs. But sometimes I find myself missing the person they were. The friend they were or the person I loved. I miss the feeling I had with them, but I know that the way they are now would not bring me happiness and comfort. It’s okay to grow apart, life happens and shapes us in weird ways. Losing someone in any aspect can be a hard adjustment. Acknowledge that your lives are different now and learn to move on.

Being happy for someone who hurt you is hard. Trying to not be bitter over a breakup is also hard. But both are key elements of moving on. You don’t need to forgive them and you certainly don’t need to forget. However, don’t let the anger and bitterness manifest into something that consumes you.

Fabulous Fall Trends

Using Pintrest to

fall fashion trends

If you’re anything like me, you are doom scrolling through Pinterest to craft the perfect fall wardrobe for the next couple months to come. However, sometimes it is difficult to keep up with the latest fashion trends; especially with the shortcoming “microtrends” that only last about a couple of weeks or months. Here, I have curated a perfect list of cute and trendy fall fashion trends to upgrade your wardrobe for the colder season.

UGGs

These have been a staple in people’s wardrobes since 2010; not really making a comeback until 2023. These boots became popular for their comfy and basic style, while still adding character to an outfit. These boots are usually paired with a sweater or shrug and baggy jeans or leggings. When they started popping up again in 2023, it became increasingly difficult to find these boots in stores because they ended up being sold out everywhere, people buying them the second they see a pair in their size. This trend has not slowed down, as many more individuals are pulling out their UGGs for the colder weather to come. Overall, I think these boots are perfect because they are cute, comfortable, and will keep your feet warm. Not to mention, they come in a variety of colors and styles; therefore curating to everyone’s taste.

Animal print

This fall season, animal print decided to make a comeback, adding the perfect amount of boldness to any look. Whether you want to break out that oversized leopard print coat or even rummage your closet for that trusty zebra shrug that’s been hiding in there for years, these designs will bring out the best in any fall look you create. Paired with jeans and a basic white top, you have a casual and trendy fall fit. For a more bold look, you can pair any animal print with a red tank, a black skirt, and knee high boots. This outfit is perfect for going out and taking those cute and aesthetic photos for social media. The combinations with animal print are endless as animal print can create both a casual or classy look with ease.

Denim on denim

This trend became very popular, and for good reason too. There has always been an unspoken rule in the fashion world where you couldn’t pair denim with denim because it looked too chaotic. Well, the internet bashed this rule by creating the fashion trend known as “denim on denim.” This trend included wearing more than one piece of denim in an outfit; even mixing up colors of the denim. An example of this being a denim miniskirt, a tank top, and then an oversized denim jacket (maybe in

the same color or in a different color). Honestly, I wish people would have stepped outside of their comfort zones earlier because a majority of the denim outfits created always look so put together and well crafted. That is your sign to try “denim on denim” and see what cute outfits you can come up with. Stepping outside of your comfort zone in the fashion world can change your perspective on fashion as a whole and even increase your creativity.

Ballet flats

As someone who has taken ballet classes kindergarten through 5th grade, I had never understood why people would wear uncomfortable ballet flats for casual wear. While they are nonetheless uncomfortable, they can be the perfect staple to wear with any outfit. They go so well with a variety of styles and articles of clothing; my favorite outfit being a white blouse, black dress pants, and then ballet flats in black. They are so cute and dainty and can easily tone down any outfit without making the whole outfit feel like too much. Not to mention, that they come in a variety of colors, ranging from neutral tones such as black, white, and beige to more bold colors such as red and maroon. Currently, I am on the hunt for maroon ballet flats because I’m in love with them so much. My suggestion is to just make sure that you have bandaids on you, as you will potentially get blisters on your heels!

Maxi skirts

One of my favorite fall fashion trends by far is all of the maxi skirts I have been seeing all over Pinterest. They are simply the cutest transition

outfit. One of my favorite outfits I saw on Pinterest was a beige cardigan, with a denim maxi skirt, and ballet flats. Not only are these skirts cute but they are also a very comfortable outfit option; easy to move around in and perfect to protect your legs from the slightly colder weather. There are also a variety of maxi skirt options other than denim, such as leather, suede, lace, and simple cotton skirts, giving you a variety of looks that you can create. Either way, owning one of these skirts is a staple that you need in your wardrobe.

Shrugs

Shrugs are a recent fashion trend that kind of emerged out of the blue after they went viral on social media. These types of cropped sweaters are perfect for the fall because they are a perfect layer to add over cropped t-shirts and tank tops. Not to mention, they come in a variety of colors and styles, my favorite being the neutral toned ones. A shrug can be perfectly paired with a neutral tone tank top, baggy jeans, and any type of boots or tennis shoes. Not only can they be styled in the cutest way, but they can keep you warm during the transition from summer to fall. This should be an important staple in your wardrobe as it can be styled in a variety of ways.

I hope this article helped you find the perfect items to have in your wardrobe during the colder season. Remember to not only dress stylish, but also dress warm for the colder weather. Wearing something that makes you feel good will make you feel confident and ready to tackle anything, so find your style and incorporate that into these fall fashion trends.

How do I cut toxic people out of my life?

For the sake of this article, I will be giving you my personal advice on the topic based on experiences I had in the past. Disclaimer: these are my opinions from past experiences, so they may not align with your exact situation or problem, but I hope that you will use this advice as a guide to help you in your toxic situation.

Assess the situation

One of the biggest things that I would do first before cutting toxic people out of your life is to assess the situation with that individual. Ask yourself: what did this person do? How has this person been treating you overall? These are important questions to ask yourself before you make the big decision to remove them from your life. If this person did something terrible to you and is not treating you right, then the best thing to do is to just leave them. Having these individuals around you will only draw negativity into your life. Between the stress of college and managing your independent life, You do not need that toxic energy in your life.

Respect always matters

You might be mad or annoyed at this person. Either way, respect always matters. First, you always want to make sure you are in a clear headspace before communicating with them. Things will not be solved if you are seeing red when thinking about them. Second, voice your thoughts before you cut off the connection. Do not just ghost or ignore the individual. Be communicative and tell them why you are doing so. Therefore, they have a general idea of why there shouldn’t be any more communication between you and them. Doing so, you guys are both walking away with a general idea as to why this is the best decision, and no one is left in the dark.

You are allowed to grieve a friendship

You are allowed to grieve a friendship that once was. People will tell you that it’s over and that it’s nothing to be sad about, but they are wrong. You aren’t necessarily upset that you cut ties with this person, but because all the memories you had together are now lost. That is something to be upset about. Friendships are curated by people that we can trust and feel comfortable around. However, some friendships will not last forever, and that is a matter of grieving and acceptance. There are people that you are meant to spend forever with and then people you spend a short amount of time with. At the end of the day, it’s the positive and respectful friendships that you want to keep close with you.

Take your time

Finding new friendships in a very busy and connected world can be very difficult. That is why it is important to give yourself time before forming new friendships with others; especially if you are struggling with trust. There are so many good people in your life that love and support you, therefore focusing more on those positive relationships is a good way to cope. Either way, give yourself some time to build up trust again, and you’ll be on your way to forming new and lasting friendships with others around you.

I hope these tips were helpful when cutting toxic people out of your life. Understanding these four things might just help you conquer this difficult situation.

Student dorm debacle: Floor types Does CNU like

carpet or hard flooring better?

CLAIRE HALL

CLAIRE.HALL.22@CNU.EDU

One of the biggest debacles I’ve had since being at Christopher Newport University for three years is whether carpet or hard flooring is better for dorm rooms. I’ve had experience with both types of floors since living on campus and I can say for certain that I personally find carpet a whole lot better than hard flooring.

As a freshman, I lived in York West, which has carpet as their dorm room flooring. I really enjoyed the carpet, as it made the room feel more like a room and less like a prison cell. I didn’t mind

that slightly ugly color of the carpet because to me, it felt extremely comfy to walk around in. However, as a sophomore, I was placed into Potomac South, and ended up having hard flooring in my dorm. I did not like this at all. First, the hard floor was cold and my feet ended up freezing all the time. Even when I wore socks, I always slipped and fell. I’m not sure who lived in my dorm before me, but there were so many mystery stains on my flooring that it didn’t feel cozy or clean at all. Not to mention you could see just about every miniscule amount of dirt and hair because the flooring was so light.

Needless to say, I was excited when my sophomore year was over.

I posted a survey on Instagram specifically for CNU students to see how many people preferred carpet over hard flooring. Out of the 110 individuals that responded to my poll, about 72% said that they preferred carpet and 28% preferred hard flooring. The most common response I got from those who preferred carpet over hard flooring said that it had felt more comfy to them.

Senior Soren French explained that carpet is usually more comfortable than hard flooring because it’s less cold, something junior Nygeria Driver can agree with as she explained that she likes to walk around barefoot, which makes her like carpet floors more as well. Other factors that make carpet better besides hiding stains and making dorm rooms feel more homey were brought up by senior James Coffey.

“The carpet hurts less when I trip and fall, ” he said.

While carpet seems to be the clear winner in this debacle, people also believe that there are other aspects to take into consideration that make hard flooring better than carpet.

According to the poll, one of the biggest reasons for preferring hard flooring over carpet is the cleanliness of the carpets, which we all know after years of college living, aren’t always necessarily in the greatest condition. Junior

TJ Smith explains that he prefers hard floors because “carpet gets dirtier and is harder to clean.”

Many other individuals feel the same way, including sophomore Caitlin Bergin, who agreed with cleaning carpet being more difficult and also adding a bonus of having hard flooring is the ability to add a cute rug to spruce up your dorm room.

Senior Emma Joyner also explained her reason for liking hard floors is that when she cleaned her hard flooring, “I don’t have to feel disgusted thinking about all the germs.” It certainly is easier to see whether or not your tile has been cleaned rather than your dingy colored dorm carpet, that’s for sure.

Overall, each person has their own preference of whether they find carpet or hard flooring better suited for dorms. It doesn’t come as a shock for me that most people like carpet floors better but I’m a bit biased because I agree with them. Unfortunately, for the most part we as students don’t get to always choose whether or not our rooms have hard floors or carpeted floors, so work with what you’ve got to make the best of your current flooring situation!

Are Taylor Swift’s different album variants over-consumption?

How artists are profitting from fans

As soon as I walk through the front doors at Target, I find myself bolting to one of two aisles: Books or albums. Typically, my attention is captured by the monument of a display held for a particular famous blonde artist. Scanning the shelves, I notice the surplus of editions of the same exact album with one artist as the sole owner of the album.

As a fan of Taylor Swift, my initial reaction is always excitement when she releases new albums, including the re-recordings of her first six albums, also known as “Taylor’s Version”.

However, it does feel exhausting to get a notification from her social media team, known as Taylor Nation, all to find out yet another album cover or variant of the same record has been released for purchase. The difference between some of these variants boil down to one song, with each digital album price being roughly between $11.99 to $13.99, and sometimes, even reflecting her birth year at $19.89.

I’m not a marketing student, but it is clear that Taylor Swift and her team are releasing what feels like a million versions of the same album for their own gain. It boils down to one observation I made: Taylor Swift and her marketing team are not foolish. They know, behind an adoring fan base sits millions of dollars.

Her eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, was released on April 19, 2024, with the option for preorder available months prior. Two hours after the release of the standard edition, she announced a second version of the album called “The Anthology.” Fans had a mix of excitement and confusion, as their pre-ordered digital, original version of The Tortured Poets Department was delivered to their phones less than two hours prior. After months of people begging for Swift and her team to release physical copies of “The Anthology” on CD and vinyl, as of last week, Swift finally announced that “The Anthology” chapter of The Tortured Poets Department

will become available Nov. 29th at Target, along with a book she has written about the Eras Tour. Now, there are seven vinyl, 10 CD, and four cassette variations of The Tortured Poets Department.

Taylor Swift currently holds the record for the amount of vinyls sold in the United States within one week, with 1989 (Taylor’s Version). According to The Rolling Stone, $1.28 million in vinyls were sold. This can be credited to the four variants of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) vinyls her adoring fans can purchase.

Billie Eilish recently called out other artists who release numerous editions of the same album, specifically calling out the “wasteful packaging.” Eilish prides her physical sales on being as sustainable as her team physically can, so the singer-songwriter expressed her frustration towards other successful artists who are not producing as sustainable as possible. This brought more attention to Taylor Swift’s numerous editions and variants of these vinyls and CDs.

As a self-proclaimed “Swiftie,” I cannot help but wonder - why would a billionaire artist who prides herself on being genuine encourage her fans to purchase numerous editions of the same album? The answer is evident: Monetary gain. An artist doesn’t become a billionaire simply because they are popular or have a high-grossing tour, such as The Eras Tour, but rather through the numerous releases of different editions of the same album.

Where those who are not Taylor Swift fans are shaking their heads at the over-consumption of the variants of her albums, there are plenty of Swifties shaking their heads with empty bank accounts beside them.

Candy Corn- to eat or not to eat?

Is this popular Halloween candy worth all the hype?
BRE

Candy corn is essentially the poster child for all Halloween candy, yet it doesn’t always get the best rap. It’s everywhere. You either love it, hate it or maybe you’re cool and edgy and say you’re somewhere in between. You don’t have to love it, if anything a good majority of people will say it’s complete garbage. Which is simply not true, but perhaps I have the taste buds of a seven year old.

Personally, I enjoy candy corn way more than I probably should. However, after the first few pieces it dries my mouth out and I swear I’ll never eat it again. Then I eat 10 more pieces and feel terrible about it both physically and mentally.

When it comes to the taste, others would agree with me. Senior Aleksandra Paulson being one of them who says she too is a candy corn enjoyer.

“It’s pure sugar and I like it. It’s a sweet treat. The sweetest of treats,” she said.

However, some students don’t share the belief of the sweet goodness of candy corn. Senior Maggie Gammons doesn’t like candy corn for a multitude of different reasons.

“It’s too sweet and overhyped,” she said. So while Christopher Newport University students seemingly have different opinions about the actual taste of candy corn, I have found that this candy can be used in so many ways other than eating (or not eating) it. These delightfully colored shaped triangles can be used for those edible arrangements your mom makes that sit out on a coffee table that no one touches. You can use them as decorations on top of other festive treats to make it seem like you’re more artsy than you actually are. Try using them as fake teeth after you poorly carve your pumpkin and give it a janky mouth. Or, you can use them to throw at your brother when he won’t stop talking through Hocus Pocus. In essence, candy corn serves a greater purpose than just being a mediocre candy. So if you see a bag of candy corn in the aisle of a grocery store before Halloween, consider these other tactics they can be used for if you like the way they look, but not the way they taste. Because let’s be real- they are an iconic symbol of the holiday of Halloween.

“Life”

I’m doing well

A cold breeze shifts across the stones

Blades of grass dancing all around

It wasn’t long ago that you stood in front of me

Giving wisdom here and there at whatever chance you got

Day to day our encounters were up in the air

Sometimes full, sometimes empty

I got a promotion last week

I’m doing well

There is no need to worry anymore

I can still see those smiles

The bright eyes that never failed to fade in my sight

Our meetings were always long and dreadful

Now become short and sweet

A warm ray of light bends from the horizon

The aroma from the bouquet finally rises above your stone

I’m doing well
