The MSU Shooting: What Happened and How You Can Help

On Feb. 13, three students were killed and five were injured in a mass shooting on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. A gunman went into the Berkley Hall building on campus at 8:18 PM and opened fire on students gathered in the building. The shooter then went into the MSU Union building and continued shooting at students. MSU put out a “run hide fight” alert tweet and text, as well as putting the entire campus on lockdown. According to Michigan State Police, the gunman was confronted off campus by police and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound around 11:35 PM.

The three victims of the shooting were junior Arielle Diamond Anderson, sophomore Brian Fraser, and junior Alexandria Verner. Fraser was the president of the school’s Phi Delta Theta fraternity; he was remembered as a great friend by the brothers in his chapter in a post on the MSU PDT Instagram page

Anderson’s family told The Detroit News that Anderson was a “well-liked and kindhearted member of her community.”

The public school district where Alexandria Verner graduated from released a statement, saying “Alex was, and is, incredibly loved by everyone. She was a tremendous student, athlete, leader, and exemplified kindness every day of her life.” The five wounded students are

currently still hospitalized, three are in critical condition while two are in stable condition.

MSU officials canceled all activities for 48 hours and canceled classes for the week after the shooting. All classes in the buildings where the shooting occurred were relocated for the rest of the semester. The buildings themselves will be closed till further notice, with MSU stating they would decide on the building’s future later. The school and the local government of East Lansing have begun offering counseling services and therapy dogs for students. Sources have been made available on MSU for students seeking help. The Rock, a large boulder that has served as billboard for campus events was painted with a variety of messages in the days after.

Many of the students who were taking shelter had already been through a mass shooting before. Several survivors took to social media to discuss how they had now been a survivor of two shootings and how so little

has changed since the first shooting.

Some had survived the Oxford High School shooting in Oxford Township, Michigan in December 2021, another who posted a video on TikTok was a survivor of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012. The main consensus of the statements was the same one that was painted on the rock right after the shooting, “How Many More?”

MSU Interim President Teresa Woodruff expressed her sorrow in a video message and urged Spartans to seek help in their grief and remain unified in the wake of the tragedy.

US President Joe Biden expressed condolences, as did Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who ordered flags at half staff. Michigan Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin (D), who’s district covers both East Lansing and Oxford Township, expressed anger during a press conference that this is the second mass shooting in her district in 15 months.

Several MSU students and groups have organized gun control protests at the Michigan State Capitol and some have expressed a desire on social media to have protests on campus if MSU makes students come back too soon.

Multiple verified GoFundMe’s have been set up by families of the victims of the tragedy as well as MSU’s Spartan Strong Fund to cover the family’s medical bills. Visit www.gofundme.com and type in “MSU” to find a verified fund to donate to.

An Expected Victory: Women’s Basketball beats UMW

GRACE.GRILES.20@CNU.EDU

The Women’s Basketball team of Christopher Newport University (CNU) brings their winning streak to twenty four games with a 74-49 win against University of Mary Washington (UMW).

The first quarter had the Captains fans on the edge of their seats with UMW scoring the first points. It took until past the eight minute mark for the captains to gain a lead which was all thanks to #15, Sondra Fan, who brought the score to 5-6 with Captains in the lead. However, by the end of the first quarter UMW still held a lead with the score being 15-16.

Alivia Giles #24 brought the energy back into the game with a rebound dunk that brought the score 17-16. The Eagles still had some fight left and shortly after brought the score to a tie 17-17, but #24 once again amped up the ante by driving the ball all the way up the court. Giles then slam dunked the ball off of a rebound again making the score 19-17, Captain’s advantage.

In the second quarter the Captains and the Eagles were tied with fouls 5-5. Coaches from both teams were eager to defend their players over any possible mishap. While UMW is not a declared rival like Salisbury University the tension in the air was undeniable. Anaya Simmons, #32, brought the Captains to a healthy lead of 23-17 with eight minutes left in the second quarter. With one minute left in the second quarter Captains had a lead of 33-28.

Unfortunately for the majority of the third quarter Anaya Simmons had to sit out due to three personal fouls. However, the Captains stayed strong and kept at least a ten point lead past the three minute mark in the third quarter. By the end of the third quarter the score was

59-42, and the Captains fans took a deep sigh of relief knowing that the game was basically won.

The final score was 74-49. While the team performed beautifully and worked like a well oiled machine the amount of fouls certainly had the potential to change the game out of the Captains favor. Coach Broderick said when asked about how he would prepare for the rest of the season and about the fouls that night, “I think we played with great energy in the second half. Fouls are a part of our game, so we are not going to change anything about that. We will try not to get them (fouls), but we play a lot of people and have a lot of fouls to give.”

Anaya Simmons was asked how she felt having to sit out most of the third quarter, “It was very frustrating. I really wanted to help my team, but I tried my best to keep my energy up and help coach with people on the court. Although it was very frustrating I was proud with what my team could do”

On a more positive note #15, Sondra Fan, was asked about the team’s ability to work together and responded with, “I think our chemistry and personalities work well together. I think when Coach B recruits he recruits people that work well together and just be happy with each other in practice, games, and on the road.”

The star of the game was definitely #24, Alivia Giles. “Alivia Giles really brought the energy up today. We had a slow start, and she was definitely the spark off the bench,” Simmons said.

When Giles was asked what was going through her head through the multiple saves she made she simply said, “I just knew the game was tight, and I had to do whatever to get our ball back and put in the effort to help us win.”

A Court of Thorns and Roses: Is it Worth the Hype?

A Court of Thorns and Roses is the first book of a novel series written by Sarah J. Maas. Maas’s debut was through the A Court of Thorns and Roses release in 2015. Since then the series has garnered a solid fandom. With the release of the fifth book A Court of Silver Flames and the confirmation of the books being turned into a TV series the first book is still very much relevant despite it coming out eight years ago. When I was recommended this book I had asked a friend to give me a book that was so good it almost changed her life. I hadn’t read for fun in years, so I was looking for something to get me hooked immediately. My friend lended me A Court of Thorns and Roses then showed me the tattoo she got based off of the book. I thought that this was the perfect book for me. However, it took me almost two years to finish the book. This partly has to do with me being bogged down by school work and my addiction to Tiktok, but this is also due to the extremely slow start.

The book opens with the main character Feyre who was born into a rich family that then lost all of their money around the time of the faye wars. For almost twenty pages there is a mix of descriptions about how miserable she is and how skinny she is. I understand that there was supposed to be an emphasis on how Feyre was on the edge of starvation because when she gets to Tamlin’s palace she is overwhelmed by the luxury, but sometimes the focus on Feyre’s small frame was meant to enforce some kink. Especially when the description of Feyre’s petite frame was right next to a description with how large her love interest Tamlin was.

Feyre spends the majority of the book spitting at Tamlin which is fair considering he kidnapped her. Then in true Beauty and the Beast like fashion she slowly sees Tamlin, her kidnapper and lover as the soft man he is inside. Feyre’s change of heart for Tamlin was not as juxtaposed as I expected when I started

this book. I understood why Feyre slowly started to fall for him. He was described to be rather attractive, and there were moments where Tamlin made an effort to be kind and charming towards Feyre. So her love for him did not feel that it grew solely from Stockholm syndrome.

However, what did not sit right with me was the twist ending when Feyre discovered that Tamlin was trying everything he could to get her to fall in love with him because he needed her love to save his kingdom. This reveal made me feel very uneasy towards Tamlin. All of the charm and kindness was not out of his own attraction towards her, but it was out of duty. After Feyre finds out this information she does not get upset with Tamlin for using her. Instead she goes on a quest to save him and his people who she hated at the beginning of the book! I understand that it would be an uninteresting book if she didn’t save Tamlin, but there was no talk between Tamlin and Feyre or inner dialogue about how she felt the least bit betrayed. Instead Feyre bends to the will of her male counterpart.

I have gotten through half of the second book A Court of Mist and Fury, and I see how Sarah J. Maas is rectifying Feyre’s lack of initial reaction to Tamlin’s ulterior motive. However, it still feels as if Feyre is not making decisions for herself, but for other characters despite her being the main character.

A History of Black Newspapers in America

Following the civil war and American reconstruction, many African Americans found themselves migrating away from the southern United States to flee the vestiges of slavery and create a new life for themselves and their children. With this “Great Migration” the ideas, customs, and voices of black people were able to be heard for the first time around the entire country.

While there were new opportunities to create and expand the knowledge of the black community, many of the first black newspapers were filled with ads searching for family members sold away in slavery. The more creative and inspiring stories and discussions in black newspapers didn’t come until the late 1800s into the early 1900s.

From 1865-1899 there were nearly 1,200 black newspapers that spawned in America

With the newfound freedom to come together and create, African Americanled newspapers sparked around the country like wildfire in the early 1900s. Paper Publications such as The Appeal in St. Paul, Minnesota, The Boston Courant, The Associated Negro Press, and The Forum in Springfield, Illinois were becoming a great way for African Americans to see that there were people out there with the same problems and views as them. From 1865-1899 there were nearly 1200 black newspapers that spawned in America.

Nikki Haley to Run for President in 2024

Nikki Haley, who previously served as the governor of South Carolina, announced in a video on Feb. 14 her bid for president in 2024. Haley is the first Republican to run against former president Donald Trump, and if successful in the primary, she would be the first woman and the first Asian American to be nominated by the Republican Party for president.

Haley also served as the UN Ambassador under the Trump administration and left the administration on good terms with the former president in 2018. Donald Trump has publicly supported Haley’s entrance in the race. CNN reports that the former president received a call from Haley in which she told him about her possible campaign launch. He responded by telling her, “You should do it.”

Within white newspapers, black people were usually seen as nothing more than caricatures of real people, never to be taken seriously or valued on the same level as white Americans. These new black papers allowed insight into real African American lives, struggles, and triumphs like never before.

These papers also carried a responsibility to uplift African Americans. A main focus was urging black Americans to not take such injustices as they had in the past.

As said by Ida B Wells in The Free Speech and Headlight Journal “It can’t be expected that the negro of today will accept what was forced upon him 30 years back”

Many African Americans also found that the papers were a good way to discuss topics important within the black community with other black people. These papers were used as an early kind of discussion board. Topics would be written about and then talked about within the community.

This movement spawned many prominent Black writers and journalists. People like Ida B. Wells, William B. Scott, Randolph Miller, Pauline Hopkins, And W. E. B. Du Bois became pillars of this movement for black activism through the press.

As time went on though, these newspaper companies proved difficult to sustain. With the black economy in a still very young form, many readers would simply buy one copy and share that amongst the community. This led to very high reader rates but a dismal circulation rate, which turned out to be the downfall of many of these newspapers.

Another reason many of these newspapers never reached their full potential

During her video announcement, Haley stressed the importance of fiscal responsibility, securing the border, and strengthening America. She cited the times where she called for tax cuts in South Carolina and handled the crisis that was the Charleston shooting. She calls for “a new generation of leaders” in Washington, and ends the video saying “I don’t put up with bullies, and when you kick back, it hurts them more when you’re wearing heels.”

Haley has been very outspoken about changing the status quo in Washington.

According to FOX News, Haley spoke on how the Republican party needs to expand its base to bring in the Hispanic, Jewish, Asian and African American communities and to start speaking in a way that “lifts everybody up, not just a select few.” Haley has also proposed the idea for term limits for Congress and mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75 years old, which would impact both Trump and Biden, who are both over 75.

As far as some of the key issues go, Haley stands firm in her pro-life beliefs and as governor, Haley signed into law an extreme abortion ban that threatened doctors with jail time for providing care for their patients.

was the unwillingness of white audiences to read or even support them. Many black publications were even thwarted by hateful white Americans who used threats and other scare tactics.

Writers were threatened with lynchings and beatings to try and stop them from continuing their writings.

Still, black journalists and writers prevailed. Many of them would hide their location by moving around constantly. One thing that holds for nearly all the writers of that time was their unwillingness to quit in the face of danger.

They used their pens as weapons against racial injustice rather than cowering after being threatened by bigots. This gave the average black American hope and ambition that they could defeat the hate being cast onto them.

Although many of the black newspapers didn’t stand the test of time, two prominent magazines were created by the same man following World War II.

Jet magazine and Ebony Magazine were created by John H. Johnson following the second world war and quickly became the new beacon for African Americans to look toward for good news, bad news, thoughts, or accomplishments within the black community.

Following the brutal killing of Emmett Till, Jet magazine made a “special report” to push these photos out around America.

These magazines were able to humanize black celebrities and shine a light on successful black Americans. Two things that were fairly uncommon in the 1950s and 60s

According to Perri Irmer President and Ceo of Chicago’s DuSable Museum

of African American History during a 2019 CBS This Morning interview, “you would be hard-pressed to walk into a black home back in the day and not find the current edition of Jet or Ebony magazine”

Irmer also said, “we knew we were getting the truth, not somebody else’s version of us.”

The Two Magazines were major during the civil rights movement, remaining a reliable source and a pillar of the black community.

Ebony and Jet have since moved online exclusively, but still have an impact on the black community and continually publish important stories to black people. They continue to tell the truth about African Americans in this country.

In the present day, African Americans Have been able to make a way into mainstream media and journalism on all fronts. There are black journalists in every genre in today’s society.

Sports writers like Scoop Jackson and Stephen A Smith have carved out a role for black people on that front, while April Ryan and Abby Phillip created a space for black people in political journalism. If one is looking for music journalism or criticism there’s Carl Lamarre and Preezy Brown.

They make sure to support other black journalists and inspire the African American youth to believe that doing what they do is possible.

Even though the forms of journalism and the means of distribution have changed, black journalists have maintained the ambition to inspire change and motivate the African American community to continue being great.

Haley has also spoken out against expanding Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act and she defended the Paul Ryan budget plan of 2011 that would have turned Medicare into a premium support system, effectively ending access to Medicare for millions of Americans.

Haley has publicly criticized many GOP opinions on immigration. NBC reports that Haley would like to see

America fix “our broken immigration system,” but does not support open borders. Haley will likely encounter competition from other potential GOP candidates such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who are all rumored to run in 2024.

The Looming Iranian Nuclear Threat

This week the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported that monitors within the country of Iran have detected Uranium within the Iranian nuclear program reaching 86% enrichment, just four points less than the standard weapon-grade needed for a nuclear weapon.

Iran has, since their 1979 Revolution, set themselves up to be a longtime adversary of the United States and has pursued a policy of sponsoring terrorism across the Middle East, most notably Yemen and Palestine. Iran has also been in the news for their violent crackdown of major protests throughout the previous year.

The US Department of State has treated Iran’s nuclearization as a clear and present danger, and everything from sanctions to Obama’s previous “Iran Nuclear Deal” show great effort taken to try to put a stop to Iran’s nuclear program. All of these measures have fallen short it seems, and with this level of enrichment the most recent benchmark for Iran to have hit, their nuclearization may only be a matter of time.

Norfolk Student Brings Firearm to SchoolElementary

Norfolk Police have charged Letty M. Lopez, the mother of a 6-year-old student of Little Creek Elementary, with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and allowing access to a loaded firearm by children.

This charge follows an incident where the 6-year-old had brought the gun to the school. The incident has been picked up by nationwide news networks, such as CNN and NBC, whose reporting on this event has provided further details. Faculty discovered the weapon within the child’s backpack and immediately confiscated it, before turning it over to the police. No one was injured in this inci-

dent, but deep-rooted fears around incidents of this kind persist among school faculty, with the memory of the recent shooting at Richneck Elementary School still very fresh. With recent attention on this subject, these incidents are becoming increasingly common in the press - with two other incidents of young children gaining access to their parent’s firearms in North Carolina and Philadelphia receiving national attention as well.

Train Derailment in Ohio Causes Release of Hazardous Chemicals

On Feb 3, 38 cars from a Norfolk Southern freight train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, 11 of which were carrying hazardous materials such as vinyl chloride, according to the National Transportation and Safety Board.

Northeastern Global News interviewed Phil Brown, professor of sociology and health sciences at Northeastern University, who said that “Exposure to vinyl chloride through drinking water is frequently associated with liver cancer, and, when burned, it produces highly toxic phosgene gas.”

Due to the risk of the gas already leaking, Norfolk Southern Railroad made the decision to instigate a controlled release to burn off the deadly chemicals rather than wait for them to dissipate naturally, according to Brett Bachman, an independent film editor. An evacuation of the town was issued, and has since been lifted by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine earlier last week.

According to NBC, at least six residents of East Palestine have filed class action lawsuits, claiming loss of income due to evacuations, exposure to cancer-causing chemicals, and no longer feeling safe in their homes.

The NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) says it’s continuing to investigate the cause of the derailment, however, according to the agency, a faulty wheel may be to blame. The wheel is currently under examination.

Last Thursday, Feb. 17, the Center for American Studies at CNU held a day-long conference on the subject of National Security, headlined by the visit of the current director of the FBI, Christopher Wray. Additionally, the speaker’s list included Rear Admiral Douglas Verissimo, Director of Maritime Operations for the U.S. Fleet Forces Command, and Aliscia Andrews, the Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security for Virginia; as well as several panel sessions of professionals within both the government and private sector.

The broad subject was national security, with specific focus on a range of topics that included Cyber Vulnerabilities and Ransomware Attacks, Domestic and International Terrorism, and The Risks and Potential Benefits of Unmanned Systems.

Senior CNU student and political science major, Erin Reno, spoke to the value of these sessions, “The Director spoke a lot about the fight against cyber crime and stuff, which was really interesting, something that I don’t know a ton about… I’m really excited to hear from these experts.”

During this conference there were several breaks in the program for ‘Student Networking,’ to give students the opportunity to connect with careers that several speakers described as not only professionally attractive, but also fulfilling an essential service to the country as well.

The event was put together and planned through CNU’s Center for American Studies, headed by Professor Nathan Busch and the center’s Junior Fellows.

In the days following this event, Professor Busch told The Captain’s Log, “This conference would not have been possible without our team of Intrepid Junior Fellows. We are grateful for your help in making this event the success that it was.”

One of these fellows, Keelan Graves, a junior double majoring in American studies and political science, spoke about his

time at the Center, “[F]inding Junior Fellows was such an eye opening experience for me because I got to not only get unique opportunities like working this one, but also be able to meet people that I would have never met before.”

When asked about the event itself, Graves said: “I enjoyed meeting all the new people. I have worked two symposiums for the Center of American Studies now and one of the best things is meeting all the professionals. They’re so passionate about their jobs. They bring unique opportunities, they also bring different informational stuff, and so it’s really cool seeing all the students who are passionate about it come out.”

Arlisha Boykins Fired

Boykin’s Firing Leads to Season Suspension

On Saturday, January 21st, 2023, a 22-year-old former assistant coach for the Churchland JV girls basketball team from Portsmouth, Arlisha Boykins, posed as a 13-year-old player who played for the Truckers (the team). The real student athlete was away at a club basketball tournament, the parents of the athlete said.

The JV coach along with the head coach of the team have both been fired after the impersonation.

The game in which the JV coach played was held in Suffolk against Nansemond River on January 21. Video footage shows Boykins wearing a number 1 jersey for the Churchland team, actively playing. The parents of the student athlete claim the JV coach played under the student’s name.

WAVY confirmed Boykins is no longer an employee of Portsmouth Schools. Her last day of employment was January 25, 2023 after administration held a meeting with parents and players for both the JV and varsity teams. The players as well and the parents of the players, chose to opt out of the remainder of the season.

The executive director of the VHSL, Billy Haun, noted that this marked the second time in his seven-year tenure that a coach tried to impersonate a player. Since these incidents do not happen often, there have been no discussions to change or redevelop any regulations or procedures. In an interview with WTKR, he expressed his thoughts on what Arlisha Boykins did.

“When an adult commits to being a high school coach, it’s not just about coaching the game. They take on a lot of responsibility. “Adults who fail to live up to those expectations – I’ll just put

it bluntly – they fail students. We failed kids because we’ve got a group of young ladies who will now not be able to finish their season because of the behavior of some adults.”

The parents of the 13-yearold player who was impersonated were not happy. In an interview with WAVY-TV, they voiced their opinion on the matter.

“Coaches always preach to the kids about integrity and those types of things, so I was just shocked,” the father of the 13-year-old said.

The family of the 13-yearold told WAVY that their daughter is no longer interested in attending Churchland High School next year and will pursue other opportunities. The family also expressed that they are seeking an apology from the school division. As of February 18th, there is still

no word on if the family has heard back from the school division.

NFL Referees Praised by Commissioner

A Compliment Results in Controversy

The NFL’s 2022-23 story has come to an end and some believe it could not have had a better final chapter. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes concluded a historic MVP season with a Super Bowl win in a spectacular game against the Philadelphia Eagles and superstar quarterback Jalen Hurts.

While most enjoyed the game, halftime show, and commercials, there are quite a large contingent of fans who feel that the game’s result was tainted by a controversial crunch time penalty. With 1:54 left in the game, the Chiefs faced a third down from the Eagles 15 yard line. Mahomes lofted a pass over the head of first-year Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster that some believed was not close to being completed.

After the play, the referees called defensive holding on Eagles cornerback James Bradberry. Fans felt that the

timing of the play and the flag being thrown warranted a no-call, but that was not the case.

When asked about the play, Bradberry calmly said “It was a holding, I tugged his jersey. I was hoping they would let it slide.”

Even though the Eagles defensive back was honest about his late game mistake, fans are still irate at the nature of this situation.

Popular sports analyst Mike Golic Jr. tweeted “God what a terrible ending to a classic game.”

A few days before the Super Bowl, Commissioner Roger Goodell was asked about how the referees had been this season and in an act of support, Goodell praised referees for their “great work” all year. He went on to say that the officiating had never been better.

Regardless of what Commissioner Goodell says,

many NFL games end in controversy. Even on the biggest stage in American sports.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers thinks he’s figured out the problem with today’s officiating in the NFL. Rodgers appeared on the Pat McAfee Show and said that he feels the best refs have begun working as rules experts for the NFL’s TV partners.

The four-time NFL MVP said, “Gene Steratore, I think one of the best guys at understanding how to interact with guys and how to communicate with them, and then how to control a game without being a part of it. Gene was incredible at that, but Gene is on TV now. Why? Because they pay more.” This is largely due to the fact that NFL refs are part-time employees and when the best of them are offered full-time salaries at large television networks, they cannot turn them down.

In a statement prior to

the Super Bowl, Roger Goodell said “There are over 42,000 plays in a season. Multiple infractions could occur on any play. Take that out or extrapolate that. That’s hundreds if not millions of potential fouls. And our officials do an extraordinary job of getting those. Are there mistakes in the context of that? Yes, they are not perfect and officiating never will be.”

A Thrilling Three Days of Basketball

Every year, the NBA AllStar Weekend is an exciting three days of events. They always find a way to match the young stars with the old stars, and the celebrities also make it a fun weekend for basketball fans around the world.

This year, the events were held in Utah which had jerseys modeled after the Utah Jazz’s 1990s uniforms.

The events kicked off on Friday night with the Celebrity Game. The two teams were coached by 13-time All-Star and Utah Jazz minority owner Dwayne Wade as well as Jazz governor Ryan Smith.

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf stole the show, scoring 20 points and adding 10 rebounds and 4 blocks to his stat line. This won him the game MVP trophy as he led Team Wade to an 81-78 victory.

The next event was the NBA’s Rising Stars game. This game always holds the NBA’s best young talent and this year was no different. The player pool was separated into teams each led by former NBA All-Stars.

There was Team Pau which was led by six-time All-Star and two-time NBA champion Pau Gasol. Team Joakim was led by two-time All-Star and former Defensive Player of the Year Joakim Noah. Lastly, there was Team Deron which was led by three-time All-Star Deron Wiliams.

The teams competed in a three-game tournament with the first two games going up to 40 and the championship to 25. The first game saw Team Pau play Team Deron. This resulted in a 40 to 25 win for team Pau behind a hefty 13-point performance by New Orleans Pelicans Pelicans Second Year Guard Jose Alvarado.

The next day of the weekend is the less game-oriented

day of the weekend but it always proves to be the fan favorite.

The first event on Saturday was the NBA Skills Challenge. This contest had three players from three selected teams go through a basketball obstacle course. This event was won by Utah Jazz rookie Walker Kessler. Teammates Colin Sexton and Jordan Clarkson, a former Sixth Man of the Year were also participants.

The next event of the night was the Three-Point Contest. Fans were treated to a star-studded lineup of participants including All-Stars Damian Lillard, Jayson Tatum, Lauri Markkanen, Julius Randle, and Tyrese Haliburton. Haliburton stunned the rest of the competition in the first round, earning a score of 31 on his attempts.

The final round put Lillard and Haliburton against each other and prolific shooter Buddy Hield. Ultimately, Lillard was able to win the contest over Hield and Haliburton by one point. The final event of the night was the Dunk Contest. Over the past few years, this event has become a disappointment as it has fallen from its days of glory in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

However, this year’s contest did not disappoint. Mac McClung got fans out of their seats with a 720 degree dunk from the baseline. This particular dunk went viral throughout the night.

Simply put by NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, “He (McClung) saved the dunk contest.”

The final event of the weekend was the NBA All-Star Game. This game took a new format this year as the two captains, Los Angeles Lakers Forward Lebron James and Milwaukee Bucks Forward Giannis Antetokounmpo selected their teams minutes before the game.

Once the game commenced, it went as expected which raised concern about the effort given in the AllStar Game. A few stars took advantage of the lack of effort given on the defensive side of the ball.

Boston Celtics Forward Jayson Tatum had a scoring outburst, notching 55 points and setting a new All-Star Game record for points. Donovan Mitchell of the Cleveland Cavaliers also had a night, scoring 40 points to propel Team Giannis to a win.

The Controversy in Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy is a video game that has been hyped for over two years ever since its announcement in September 2020, however; it was only just released on February 10 of this year. It’s a game that focuses on the nostalgia of any Harry Potter fan. It takes place at Hogwarts, a magical boarding school where your character starts as a fifth year transfer student. It’s set in the 1800s, before the timeline of the Harry Potter books, with a goblin rebellion imminent. The game has an open world aspect and graphics that do an amazing job to bring the whole game together with the storyline. There is no doubt of how well made this game is, however; no matter how much the creators of this project want the focus to be on the game, there is something else stealing the spotlight.

The creator of the Harry Potter universe, J.K. Rowling has been under fire for a while because of her hate speech against the transgender community. Her favored social media site, Twitter, is littered with comments that disparage those who identify as transgender. As a result, a large group of gamers have been encouraging people to boycott this game by either not buying it, watching streamers play it, or endorsing it on social media because supporting the game is seen as supporting J.K. Rowling in many minds. Although Rowling had no part in creating the game, from the storyline to the gameplay, by giving the game its inspiration through Harry Potter, it is a guarantee that she will earn money from this endeavor. In the game itself, the creators included transgender individuals, though this has been seen as an intentional attempt to try and separate the game from Rowling.

So should you buy this game? If you look hard enough into any game, you will find a controversy, whether it be an allegation against one of the creators, or derogatory undertones in the game itself. That being said, buying a game shouldn’t be about supporting the people who made it, it should be about actual content itself. Learning about what goes on behind the scenes of a game, movie, or book you love shouldn’t change the way you feel about it. If you’re interested in the material, there is nothing wrong with buying a game, as buying a game doesn’t automatically mean you agree with everything in it or the creators themselves.

Setting the Scene for Phase 5 of the MCU with None Other Than Antman

Antman and the Wasp: Quantumania Review

Antman and the Wasp: Quantamania is a great movie for fans of chaos, and comedy. The newest Marvel film was released in theaters last Friday, February 17th and it has many mixed reviews. It’s obvious that this film was used mainly to set up future movies so by the end of the movie there were still questions that weren’t answered. However, it wasn’t much different from the first two Antman movies. The previous Antman movies are known for being more on the comedic side and this one was no exception.

As Scott Lang and his family travel through the Quantum Realm trying to find their way back to Earth, they come across a lot of unexpected things. The Quantum Realm is very similar to a Star Wars planet with the new language and unique creatures. Even the buildings and the villain’s guards are similar to the Republic and Storm Troopers. The visuals were amazing, however some of the special effects were subpar compared to Marvel’s other works.

Despite the fans’ discourse on how good the movie was, one thing they can agree on is the outstanding performance given by Jonathan Majors, who plays the film’s main villain Kang the Conqueror. The character of Kang made his debut in the Loki show and they expanded the character in Quantamania. Ma-

jor’s performance really had the audience on the edge of their seats throughout the movie. He’s being set up to play a big role in the future of the MCU, as shown by the two end credit scenes, and by the fact that he has an upcoming Avengers film named after him.

Even before the movie came out, many fans were disappointed with the decision to change the actress for one of the more prominent roles, Cassie Lang. The casting for teenage Cassie was changed from Emma Fuhrmann to Kathryn Newton after Endgame. Many fans were upset about this change because of how good the chemistry was between Fuhrmann and Paul Rudd, her on-screen father. However, Newton and Rudd gave off perfect father-daughter chemistry throughout the movie. Some say Newton’s acting wasn’t the best in some parts but all-in-all she did well portraying Scott Lang’s daughter. Despite that cast change, Paul Rudd, Evangaline Lilly, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Michael Douglas resumed their roles as Scott Lang, Hope Van Dyne, Janet Van Dyne, and Hank Pym.

While this movie may not have been Marvel’s best, it still perfectly sets up the future of the MCU. It adds more background to the concept of the multiverse which has been a main feature of many of the

How To Sell A Haunted House

Grady Hendrix is known for many things as an author. He’s able to weave dark humor, terrifying horror, and complicated characters into the most unique settings for his books. He’s done a haunted IKEA, a book club fighting a deranged vampire, a support group for final girls, and other crazy good ideas. In his newest book, How to Sell A Haunted House, Hendrix takes the reader on another insane and scary trip, this time through a home filled with haunted puppets .

The book follows a single mother named Louise, who’s parents have died in a car accident. Louise returns to her family home in Charleston filled with grief. While the only thing she was planning on worrying

about was her deadbeat brother Mark, the grieving process suddenly turns into a nightmare. Because Mark and Louise’s childhood home, filled with her mother’s large puppet collection, doesn’t want to be sold and it puts the siblings on a horrific roller coaster ride.

The book is split into five parts, named after the five stages of grief (Denial, Anxiety, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance). The story builds into a narrative of confronting grief as well as being an entertaining horror read. Hendrix does a great job of making the story engaging and building the story into something you can’t take your eyes off of. It doesn’t drag its feet or rush, it’s a complete story that keeps

you turning the pages. It’s a wonderful stew of emotional, scary, campy, and excitement.

The characters are given enough detail to care about. The story is mostly from Louise’s point of view, so she’s given the most characterization of all. Even though she’s our main character, she has her strikingly obvious flaws that make the reader reasonably frustrated.

Louise’s character Mark has the best arc of the story, going from a complete jerk to someone who helps save the day. The central antagonist of the story is this puppet named Pupkin. Pupkin is a nightmare combination of Annabelle, Brahms from The

Boy, and a puppet from Puppet Master. Pupkin’s sing-song way of speaking mixed with macabre violence makes him a terrifying foe. In one of the most common recurrences in Hendrix’s work, the supporting characters and their ignorance, in this case Louise’s ex Ian and her aunt Honey, serve as a significant blockade to the madness being stopped.

How To Sell a Haunted House is another fantastic addition to Hendrix’s bibliography. This modern day horror master proves that any concept, as much as you see it on film, is just as, if not more fun when put to page. The characters, story, and scares are all well written and make this a must read.

‘We Found Love’ in Rihanna’s Superbowl Performance

The Halftime show that made it all worth it

Rihanna’s halftime show was definitely one people will remember.

Her show started off with her on a high platform with one of her most iconic hits, “B**** Better Have My Money,” with over 400,000 digital copies distributed in the US. In the middle of the song, she transitioned into “Where Have You Been,” another one of her greatest hits with over 4,000,000 sales in the US.

In total, Rihanna performed a total of 12 songs in the span of 13 minutes. The performance consisted of Rihanna and the dancers standing on moving platforms all around the stage of various heights while other dancers stood in a long line on the ground along a long red platformed stage. Rihanna stood out with her blood red outfit and oversized jacket with lots of beautiful accents and standing-out decorations. Her hair was in a high ponytail that had wisps of hair coming out of the sides of the braid that made her makeup stand out. Her dancers wore white plushy jackets that made her outfit stand out even more.

Throughout the show, the singer performed some more of her top hits such as, “Umbrella,” “Rude Boy,” “We Found Love,” and “Diamonds.” Her performance was very energetic and lively and made fans all around

the country adore the singer even more.

In the middle of her second song, many golden fireworks on the outside of the building exploded, giving Rihanna’s halftime show that extra spark of wow-factor that completed it.

During the show, there were many closeups of the dancers during different parts of different songs which gave inside scoops of all aspects of the show.

When Rihanna starts singing one of her hits ,”Work,” the lights and the dancers slow down around her, making it feel like this song slowed down time and everything around her. More of the lights turned red, the dancers got down on the ground for more intense, slower dance moves, and the beat of the music became more alluring to all of those watching.

During all of this breathtaking dancing and singing, Rihanna announces she is pregnant! Being pregnant and providing the intense and unforgettable halftime show that she did was not easy, but Rihanna ate and left no crumbs.

While being pregnant, Rihanna performed many of the dance moves her dancers did all while looking as alive and glowing as ever. Overall, Rihanna’s halftime show will go down in history and certainly will be one that no one ever forgetd.

of Head Over Heels: the fun, celebratory, rockin 80s musical

Head Over Heels is a vibrant and humorous musical journey full of love, self discovery, and 80s rock music. It combines the vibrant feel of the 80s and the radiant aesthetic of Ancient Greece. Set to the music of the 80s all-female rock band The Go-Go’s, Head Over Heels tells the story of a royal family on a quest to save their kingdom from losing its magic. The plot of the show is actually adapted from the play The Countess of Pembroke’s Arcadia written by Sir Philip Sidney in the 16th century. So the combination of a prose romance with 80s girl group music makes for an amazing show.

Opening with “We Got the Beat”, Head Over Heels is lively but also emotional from start to end. All the pieces come together so beautifully, from the actors themselves to the costumes they’re wearing, not to mention the incredible set pieces and seamless transitions between scenes. The energy in every song and dance number makes the audience want to get up and dance themselves.

It’s hard to choose any specific standouts among the cast, as everyone gives such incredible performances. The entire

ensemble and orchestra come together to put on such a dynamic show, full of outstanding singing and dancing. Diego Bly and Kimberlie Pagán’s banter as the King and Queen of Arcadia is hilarious to watch, and Chad McKnight’s quips as Dametas, the King’s Advisor, never fails to make the audience laugh. Sara Newton and Renee Kauffman’s performances as the King and Queen’s daughters are emotionally compelling, as well as Bella Schaub’s performance as Mopsa, the eldest daughter’s handmaiden.

Jimmy Grimes gives an incredibly funny performance as Musidorus, a shepherd who the audience is rooting for throughout the whole show. His vocal range is incredible as well. Liam Riley gives a wonderfully dramatic and powerful performance as Pythio, who is the first nonbinary character introduced in the first act. The representation of different identities and experiences within the LGBTQ+ community is truly inspiring to watch.

The cast and crew have a portion of ticket sale proceeds being donated to Hampton Roads’ LGBTQ Life Center, a nonprofit organization whose goal is to empower local LGBTQ+ communities. Head Over Heels manages to showcase real life troubles and experiences without taking itself too seriously, and it makes for a really fun show.

Out Of A Fairytale

CAB hosts the annual Captain’s Ball

the ball, with hanging flowers and vines. Arguably, the best part was the appetizers and desserts available on both sides of the ballroom. On the left, there was a plethora of options, from sushi to egg rolls. On the right, CNU brought out the infamous chocolate fountain, which was encircled by marshmallows, fruit, and cake. For guests of age, there was even an option to get an alcoholic beverage from one corner of the ballroom.

job creating the perfect night to remember. It was a truly magical event and gave a great reason for people to dress up and have fun with their friends.

Last Friday, Feb. 17, the CNU Entrepreneurship Club hosted its spring Student Run Business Fair in the DSU. This is the fourth ever business fair hosted by the Entrepreneurship Club, the first being in the fall of 2021.

According to the club’s Compass page, “Our

overarching goal is to better connect the Christopher Newport community with our local Newport News community through learning about entrepreneurship. We do this through discussing podcasts, providing workshops, and hosting speakers from local start-up businesses.”

This past Saturday, CNU’s Campus Activities Board (CAB) outdid themselves with this year’s annual formal dance, Captain’s Ball, which had a theme of Enchanted Forest. As you walked into the DSU, and ascended the grand staircase, you were greeted with a scene straight out of a fairytale. All around the landing were flowers and everyone was dressed to the nines in their suits and dresses. Taking inspiration from the theme, some students were even dressed as druids or woodland creatures.

In the spirit of CAB, there was no shortage of things to do at the dance. After checking your coat, there was a photo booth by the entrance of the ballroom, where you could pick out props, take pictures, and even get your photos printed on the spot. Though, the main event of the ball took place in the ballroom itself. In the center of the ballroom, there was a dance floor, accompanied by a DJ. The floor was crowded with students and their guests dancing and singing to the music. In between songs, the DJ even had a QR

code up, that allowed students to suggest the next song. Surrounding the room, there were plenty of photo opportunities in theme with

Outside the ballroom, there was even more to do! In one room, there was a 360o camera that was set up to take pictures from every angle. In the boardroom, CAB had set up a VIP room, where if you bought your ticket early enough you could go in. This room was complete with more dessert and nonalcoholic drinks for the taking, along with a free tumbler. As the night winded down, and people started leaving, there were complementary wine glasses engraved with the theme of the night you could take. All in all, CAB did an amazing

CNU students with small businesses were able to sign up for a booth to sell their products. Businesses ranged from crocheted stuffed animals to handmade paintings to pressed flower jewelry.

Club president Savanna Meyers is a senior Management and Marketing major who also owns her own business, Simply Statements. Meyers said that her interest in running her own business started in the fourth grade; now she sells greeting cards, clothing with her own designs on them, and she is self-published on Amazon. The hardest part of running Simply Statements is finding time to dedicate to her business, said Meyers.

“The school year is always so busy and I am glad the business fair allows myself and other entrepreneurs to showcase our products to the CNU community,” Meyers added.

One vendor who participated this year was Stephen Sherrange. Sherrange is a senior Computer Science

major who has run his own art business for more than five years now. When asked why he chose to participate in this year’s business fair, Sherrange emphasized the importance of business exposure.

Sherrange also considered the most rewarding aspect of running his own business.

“Being able to look back at what I made and accomplished, and knowing that I made it happen. That sense of personal agency is hard to beat,” he said.

Another vendor, senior Psychology major Sierra Palian, owns Lilac Haven Jewelry. She started making pressed flower jewelry for fun during the pandemic, but her hobby soon developed into a business.

In developing her business, she encountered some hiccups along the way.

However, Palian said, “Perseverance is key to starting any business, and frustration isn’t a bad thing; it shows that you’re striving to get better.

Palian also said, “It’s so

refreshing to bring a creative idea to fruition and see other people get just as excited about my jewelry as I do.”

Student Sustainability The SSC works toward bettering the environment

Study Spots on Campus

Staff writer ranks study spots around campus from worst to best

6.DSU

If you’re able to study in the DSU, you deserve a medal. Even though there are tables and you’re not far from food, it’s busy at all points of the day. Whether it’s meal time traffic or one of the other major occurrences on campus, it’s not going to give you the peace you desire. The DSU provides lots of services, but a peaceful study environment isn’t one of them.

3. General Library Study Rooms

The Student Sustainability Club (SSC) is a club at CNU whose main goal is to “make CNU a more sustainable campus…This includes promoting sustainable behavior, educating the CNU community about sustainability, pursuing beneficial sustainable initiatives,” Anna Mignardi said.

The SSC is their own organization and is student run. The club has goals of promoting a healthier CNU. Audrey White said that some of the things that they are working on are a “pollinator garden…We’re also working on community events. So we’ve had a leader shop, where we talk about how to lead a sustainable life. We have students working on a competition between Greek life, focus on sustainability behaviors, and increasing things like lowering your waste, being aware of the green to go boxes”

Some other things that they are doing include engaging with the wildlife on campus, bringing zero waste products to CNU and they are preparing a PLP event where they speak on sustainability.

One thing the club is trying to emphasize more is the green boxes. They were gone over covid but are now back, but to get one, it has to be asked for.

Audrey White said “what

happens is you have a Green Fund on your card with your meal plan. And you asked for a to-go box and they’ll take $10 out of your Green Fund that you’ve already paid for with your meal plan. And you’re given a green to-go box. And then every time you go back to the dining hall, you bring it with you. And there’s a place in Regs and in Commons where you can deposit the box and ask the person at the desk for a new one.”

Another project that they are focused on promoting is the hard to recycle bins. These recycle bins are for “items that are not going to be traditionally recyclable in your res hall recycling containers. So they have three different items that can be recycled. It’s plastic bags, like from your grocery store, batteries, and printer cartridges.” said Audrey White

Students, faculty and staff can all bring items to the hard to recycle and there are locations in the DSU, the library and the Freedmen Center.

The students in the club all have their own reasons for joining the club and working to be actively involved. For Rachel Freeman she said “I wanted to be a part of this club because I had always been interested in sustainability and learning more about individual

impacts on the environment, but never really had the chance in high school.”

As for Audrey White, she said, “ I definitely want to work in sustainability. That’s something that I want to spend my time doing. And I want to have a job that I feel like I’m making a difference. Sustainability is one of those things and doing this kind of work. I’ve had a really good opportunity to work with a lot of other students who are passionate and make a difference in their trajectory and sustainability, which has really been really cool.”

For some of the projects and events coming up in the future Anna Mignardi said they are planning on putting bird houses around the school as well as “collaborating with the Greek community to host a philanthropic competition and collect clothes, shoes, plastic bags, etc. to then be donated or reused.”

They are also hosting a panel discussion on Climate Changes Lives: The Intersection of Racial & Environmental Justice on March 30.

On a beautiful day, going outside to study sounds like a perfectly fun thing to do. With the sun out and the sky clear, you can get knowledge and fresh air. But the weather in Virginia is less stable than CNU’s wifi. It’s a complete hit or miss if the weather is going to be good enough to sit outside in, let alone study in. Also if you have seasonal allergies, it’s a definite pass.

4.Einsteins

Cafes have long been stereotyped as being good environments to study in. Einsteins has its upsides to study in. You can get a drink and work at any of the major tables or the study room. It has outlets for when you need to charge your device and its connected to the library. However, you have to know what is the best time to be there to work. Avoid meal times or extremely active days on campus if you’re looking to get work

This refers to the study rooms from the theater within the library to the front of the library. Each study room is somewhat different. You have the large reading rooms, the small windowless study spaces, the tables out in the open, and other rooms to use. If there is any downside to them it’s that the closer you are to the front of the library, the more likely you are to get distracted by mild noise.

2.Dorm

Your dorm room is a blank canvas that you can make as homely as you wish when you get to CNU. You can also turn it into the perfect study space. In the privacy of your own space, you can get all your studying done in whatever style you’re most comfortable in. You can be at your desk or in your bed, it’s yours to decide. When you’re at your most comfortable, you can study better. The only downside is that you get cabin fever and go stir crazy inside your dorm for too long.

1.Rosemary Trible Reading Room

The back of CNU library holds a gold mine in peace and quiet, the Rosemary Trible Reading Room. With a plethora of study rooms inside, you are almost

guaranteed to find one and study away. It is never noisy, never disruptive, and spacy. This place is designed to be the perfect study space and it does an excellent job of being so.
