CNU Awarded Mental Health Grant Benefits the $200,000 grant is providing and SGA’s Meet the Counselors Day

The ongoing mental health issues on college campuses is not new information, but some exciting changes are coming to Christopher Newport University. The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) has partnered with the Virginia HealthCare Foundation (VHCF) in order to provide additional mental health services to select colleges and universities in Virginia.

This Mental Health Services Grant awards its winners $200,000 over a period of two years to increase mental health support for the students. CNU’s Executive Director of Health and Counseling Services, Bill Ritchey, said in an email to The Captain’s Log, “They are also working to increase ‘the pipeline’ for LCSW (licensed clinical social workers) and LPC (licensed professional counselor) providers who can dedicate careers to work in university counseling centers in support of student service provision.”

Ritchey also mentioned that this was a competitive grant open to colleges and universities in Virginia and CNU was “eager to be considered, and thankfully were accepted as a grant recipient.”

longer hours. There is also expected to be weekend hours provided once the office is fully staffed. “Going forward, we expect that students who couldn’t fit it into their schedule previously, now won’t have that barrier to on-campus mental health services,” Ritchey said.

With this grant, the OCS will be able to service over 1,000 students every year. Ritchey said, “That’s a significant number of students, and very important to student wellness, persistence, personal and overall success.”

Some may have questions about why CNU was one of only six universities in the state chosen for this grant, but Ritchey has an explanation.

“We are aware that this was a competitive process. CNU has been actively training Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) providers for a number of years.

That has included LPC practicum and internship students.

Thus, we have had a robust program with a strong reputation for training LPC graduate students. However, this grant allowed us to now offer a residency for LPC providers due to being able to fund the residency.”

Another reason that CNU was chosen for this grant is because the Hampton Roads area lacks a sufficient number of mental health providers. This grant will help meet the mental health needs of students.

Thoughts on Ginny and Georgia Season 2 Staff writer gives their honest opinion on this Netflix Original KATHERINE ZICKEL

Mental health plays a significant role in many people’s lives, affecting the way people handle things like relationships and stress. The Netflix TV series, Ginny and Georgia, does an impeccable job in the new season of showing the different issues the characters go through, such as self-harm, anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. As the series develops, you see some characters’ mental health problems change, depending on the choices they make.

One thing I felt the show did well was how one of the main characters, Ginny, finally tells her father she’s been burning herself for a while. Many people her age can’t work up the courage to tell their parents and could be scared of the outcome, but we see how emotional Ginny’s father was, and how deeply he cared that she told him. He enrolls her in therapy, and throughout the season we see Ginny’s interactions with her therapist, how she implements the strategies given to her, and the improvements she makes.

Showing this helps take the stigma and shame out of asking for help and going to therapy, making it less intimidating for people about to or already going through the same thing.

The flashbacks between Georgia’s past to present life were incredibly interesting to watch. One example is her previous relationship with Austin’s father, Gil. When he turned abusive, Georgia escaped by framing him for embezzling money (which she says to be fair, he was already doing.) When he re-enters her life after getting out of jail, he says he’s changed his ways and wants to get to know his son. She’s suspicious but allows it because of Austin. However, things turn south when he slams her hand against the counter, paralleling a scene shown in her past with him doing

the same thing to her. The scene does a good job showing how some people never really change no matter what they might say, providing an important lesson to learn.

Another mental health development is Abby’s eating disorder, bulimia, from season 1. At a party, a reappearing character, Samantha, is heard throwing up by Abby outside the bathroom door. Abby says nothing when she walks out but goes into the bathroom to do the same thing, except she turns on the water so no one will hear. Not only does this do a good job of showing the development of disorders, but also shows how over time, people can get smarter about learning how to hide them.

I wish the show would have developed the characters of Ginny and Max more. In season 1, Ginny isn’t understanding at all of the lengths her mother has gone to protect them, and Max is annoyingly over dramatic about everything. I felt their maturity didn’t improve in the way it should have, since in this season Ginny and Georgia are constantly at odds with one another, and Max still refuses to talk to Ginny and Abby for weeks.

Overall, I enjoyed the new season of Ginny and Georgia and liked it more than the first. There’s a good mix of funny and serious bits, such as when Georgia catches Marcus in Ginny’s closet, compared to the emotional yet powerful scene of Georgia finding out about Ginny’s self-harming.

I think it’s important for the media to show mental health issues, especially shows and movies focused on a younger audience demographic, because it can make people not feel alone in their struggles, and eliminates the taboo of discussing mental health issues in general.

“It’s all a scam anyways.” “It’s raining, what’s the point?” “I haven’t done the reading anyways.” These are all thoughts that cross my mind almost everyday I have a class. I am almost at the finish line, but it doesn’t matter. The finish line doesn’t seem worth running or even walking towards. What’s on the other side? Job hunting? No, I am actually supposed to be doing that now while taking the hardest classes of my college career.

Has anyone else noticed American culture is a lot of saving the most stressful parts of life towards the end and dealing with them all at once? Questioning American college culture aside, this phenomenon is called senioritis. According to Johnson and Wales University, it is a real psychological and physiological occurrence.

It is not just being lazy, it is the transition between adolescence into adulthood.

Burt et al. explores the idea that fifty years ago senioritis used to be more common amongst high school seniors over college seniors (1, 2021). However, now that it’s more common to pursue a college degree, senioritis is more prevalent amongst college seniors due to college graduation feeling more like the transition into adulthood.

Through my research on this topic I have found many tips regarding how to “fix” senioritis.

Johnson and Wales University’s first tip is to “stay organized.”

Burt et al. encourages seniors to participate in activities that have instant rewards to get the dopamine in their brain flowing (2, 2021). Looking at these lists is actually more overwhelming than helpful to me. It feels like I

have to add more onto my plate just so I don’t lose it.

Well I have a tip specifically for Captains with senioritis: take a break. Over the three years I have been here I’ve stretched myself thin to feel like I am being a “good Captain” and none of it ever felt like enough. This semester I am choosing to just reward myself for existing and being a good student.

I promise it is not going to be the end of the world if you take one thing off of your plate. It would be much more detrimental if you didn’t graduate. Every student comes to CNU with the ultimate goal of graduating, and as long as I get that done, I am happy with myself.

The shooting at Richneck Elementary School on Jan. 6 of this year has left the entire world stunned. An unidentified six-year-old student shot his teacher, Abby Zwerner, in the hand and chest with his mother’s handgun while Zwerner was giving instruction. The shock of this shooting made international news. The investigation into how and why this shooting happened has been ongoing and recent revelations paint a shocking picture.

Immediately following the shooting, the student was restrained by staff and then taken by police. His identity will continue to be withheld due to his young age.

The boy’s family released a statement via their attorney on Jan. 19.

“Our heart goes out to our son’s teacher and we pray for her healing in the aftermath of such an unimaginable tragedy as she selflessly served our son and the children in the school.”

The family said the firearm, identified as a 9mm Taurus pistol, was “secure” and that they were committed to firearm safety, but did not elaborate on where the gun was the day of the shooting and how the student was able to get it. The family also said the student had an “acute disability” and is currently receiving treatment.

Zwerner was released from the hospital on Jan. 19. A statement to WAVY from her family reads. “She continues her recovery as an outpatient with the support of family, friends and health professionals. The Zwerner family respectfully asks for privacy during this time.” A Go

Fund Me campaign was set up by Ms.Zwerner’s sister in order to pay for the medical costs and future living conditions for the wounded teacher.

There has been a lot of discussion on what to do to improve school safety. Democratic State Delegate Mike Mullin, who represents part of Newport News, proposed security renovations for Richneck and Dutrow Elementary.

On Jan. 17, the Newport News School Board meeting was packed with dozens of concerned parents, teachers, and citizens. “I want behaviors held accountable, I want to change,” one parent said.

Many teachers are fed up with their concerns being ignored about the lack of discipline in the school system, “We get hit, punched, cursed, threatened…you aren’t listening to us,” one teacher said.

Several speakers expressed a desire to see all the leaders of Newport News Public Schools replaced, as they feel their lack of policy has led to incidents like this and previous ones, like the Heritage High School shooting in 2021, happening when it could have been prevented.

Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew has said the investigation is ongoing and that while no charges have currently been filed, it could still happen once witness interviews conclude.

He also expressed frustration that the school did not inform the NNPD about the fact that the student had been suspected of carrying a firearm before, as well as comments he made to Zwerner saying he wanted, “to light her on fire and watch her die” that went unpunished.

Richneck’s interim principal Karen Lynch said the school will remain closed until further notice.

This year, one of two CNU professors to win the 2023 Outstanding Faculty Award is Dr. Kelly Cartwright. The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia considers nearly 80 different nominees from colleges and universities all over Virginia to receive this award. Dr. Cartwright is one of 12 winners this year. The other winner from CNU is Dr. Margarita Marinova.

Cartwright has her BS in psychology and a minor in Biology from Virginia Tech. She then went on to graduate school at the University of Arkansas and received her MA in psychology and her doctoral degree in experimental psychology.

She taught one year at a small school in Pennsylvania before coming to CNU. She is currently in her 25th year at CNU. Cartwright has published three books and has a fourth one coming out this March. That fourth book is a second edition of one of her published books, which is an uncommon occurrence. Having a second edition means the book sold so well that people want to see an updated version. In addition, Cartwright has published over 60 articles and many of them have been with students.

For Cartwight, the job is all about the students, “I want to foster students’ motivation and figure out where they are. And then help them grow beyond where they are. … it’s all about growth, student growth and development.”

Something Cartwright loves is the ability to really connect with the students. She says the focus is on “individual student mentoring, as much as possible.”

She continues, “I teach an intro class, and it’s big. It’s 95 students, but students say, even in a class of 95, they feel like it’s a small class because I know who they are. I care about who they are, I care about where they are, so that they don’t feel disconnected even in a big class. And I think that personal connection is important.”

That personal connection that Cartwight creates with her students can last a long time. Cart-

This mentality allowed for her to easily obtain letters of recommendation from her students, past and present. These letters are a key part of the application process for the Outstanding Faculty Award.

As for her first reaction to winning the award, Cartwright says it “took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes. I can remember the moment I was sitting in the car in the parking lot, and I got the call. And it just took my breath away. It was such an honor, just such an incredible honor.”

Cartwright also talked about the research that she conducts. She describes her work as being “interested in what’s going on in your head when you’re reading, like at a cognitive level, but also in your brain? What’s going on?

How are you connecting up the stuff?”

This kind of research has led Cartwright to speak before the Institute for Education Sciences, the US Department of Education’s research arm. She spoke about reading comprehension difficulties.

However, out of everything, Cartwright says her favorite part of her job is “watching students grow while continuing to grow myself.”

She will be honored at a ceremony on March 7. Cartwright will also receive $7,500 from Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation.

Mayor Phillip Jones Visits the White House and Announces Grant from U.S Dept. of Commerce’s EDA EVELYN DAVIDSON

In a news release posted on his Instagram account, Mayor Phillip Jones announced that the City of Newport News received a $640,994 grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA). This grant will aid in the development of a seafood market and dock improvements. It will also help with dredging design for the Seafood Industrial Park (SIP), which is city-owned and the basis for many “water-dependent compa-

nies.” $200,000 in local funds will also be contributed towards these projects.

Included in the news release was a statement from Alejandra Y. Castillo, the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development. Castillo stated, “The Biden-Harris Administration is committed to creating new opportunities for businesses and workers in communities across the country.”

Castillo continued, “This EDA investment will provide for improvements that will make the Newport News Seafood Industrial Park more easily accessible, creating business opportunities, and supporting food-based entrepreneurship in this historically underserved community.”

Jones said in the news release, “We are grateful that the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration is investing in this important part of Newport News and supporting our thriving seafood industry.”

Jones said, “Seafood Industrial Park is prime waterfront property that comprises 39 acres in

Jones also took a trip to visit the White House recently. In an Instagram post on his account, Jones expressed his gratitude for the Biden-Harris Administration and listed some of the issues that he brought to Biden and

cabinet members: “reconnecting communities grant,” “regional airport support,” “broadband infrastructure for economic development and bridging the digital divide” and “addressing historical challenges and inequities: concentration of public and assisted housing.”

A Public Dispute Between Virginia State Senator and His Wife

Joe Morrissey has gained some attention recently from the media due to an argument between him and his soon-to-be ex-wife, beginning with a post by the latter on Instagram.

His wife, Mryna Morrissey, has accused her husband of having a history of “serial infidelity,” manipulation, and being absent from their three children.

Morrissey likewise claims that his children told him directly that Mryna’s boyfriend had abused them and that Chesterfield County police detectives are currently investigating that accusation.

In Morrissey’s allegations of abuse, it is alleged that Mryna is making accusations against him as a response to his involvement with the police, in a saved text reading that she would “-ruin him and his life.”

While the details of this exchange have garnered the public’s attention, this appears to be the tip of the iceberg for Senator Morrissey’s past as a public figure.

Before any political career of Morrisey’s, there was a stretch of time where he practiced law at his own firm; taught at several law schools in the US, Ireland, and Australia; and served as a Commonwealth’s Attorney for Richmond.

Over the course of this career he was cited for contempt of court ten times, jailed or arrested five times, indicted (and acquitted) of five bribery, perjury, and ‘misuse of public funds’ charges, and has been suspended and reinstated a number of times.

He got into a fistfight with a defense attorney outside of a jury trial, which he spent five days in jail for. He has also been disbarred, meaning that his law license was revoked for the above misconduct, twice. This also prompted a firing from his teaching arrangements in Western Sydney, when he had failed to disclose with the university that he had actually been disbarred.

This history of scandal also extends to his private life, when in 2013 he was found by police in his home with a 17-year-old girl. That girl, who was an employee of his law office, went on to be his wife

just a few years later, the same Myrna from this most recent controversy.

Morrissey was indicted on felony charges of indecent liberties with a minor (for the many sexual encounters with 17-yearold Myrna), possession and distribution of child pornography (for possessing nude photos of Myrna), and distribution of that same material (for sending said photos to a friend). In a plea deal Joe would only be convicted and sentenced to 12 months in prison, out of which he served three.

It was from this conviction that he finally resigned from the House of Delegates in Virginia.

He then ran for what was effectively a re-election as an independent in the special election to fill his seat - and won. Serving from jail at first, he went on to serve the whole term. Later, he made a bid for State Senate and ended up winning.

This brings the story back to the present, where the most recent events can now be seen in context with Morrissey’s controversial history. Morrisey’s divorce, public disputes with Myrna, and a history of scandalous career and personal choices have all been broadcast to the public over social media.

If such measures hold together, then some amount of privacy might prevail as things go forward for Morrissey. This seems to be the case as much of the social media sparring has since been taken down by the two Morrisseys.

Damar Hamlin Back at Bills Facility

One day before the start of the NFL Playoffs, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin returned to the team facilities. This news had come almost two weeks after he suffered cardiac arrest during the first quarter of the Bills’ week 17 game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Following the injury, he had spent close to a week at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and another two days at Buffalo General Medical Center/ Gates Vascular Institute. He was discharged last Wednesday.

Hamlin’s return has made a positive impact on both players and coaches. Safety Jordan Poyer and Center Mitch Morse said that seeing Hamlin in good spirits at the facility has lifted the team’s spirits. Head Coach Sean McDermott added that Hamlin has been in the team’s facility almost daily and is slowly trying to get back into a routine.

While Hamlin has not been on the field or in the stands during the

Bills games, he has been active on Twitter, tweeting words of encouragement towards his teammates as well as his reactions towards plays happening on the field. The city of Buffalo has also shown love towards Hamlin, unveiling a 17-foot tall mural painted by a local artist that is located near the team’s facility. In the

mural, Hamlin is in his uniform making a heart gesture. This mural has been recognized by Hamlin on Twitter, responding to a tweet of it with heart hands and fire emojis.

This news is very encouraging for both the NFL and the fans.

When Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest, many analysts and fans feared the worst. During the uncertainty regarding the health of Damar Hamlin, people began to show their support by buying Damar Hamlin jerseys and donating to his toy drive fundraiser.

NFL teams then decided to honor Hamlin the following week with league-wide tributes and pregame t-shirts being worn by players that said “Love For Damar” with his jersey number, 3, being displayed on it. The support from the league was very touching and to see a player make a recovery from such an unfortunate event is very inspirational and heartwarming.

Frank Thomas Passes Away at 93 An Original Met

On Monday, an “Original Met,” Frank Thomas, passed away at 93. Thomas was living in an assisted care facility in Pittsburgh when he died.

Thomas played for many teams but most notably, the New York Mets. Thomas hit home runs in their first two stadiums, the Polo Grounds and Shea Stadium. He joked that his goal was to hit a home run in the Mets current home, Citi Field.

Thomas made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1951 where he made three All-Star appearances during his tenure. He also finished fourth in MVP voting and second in the National League during the 1958 season, his final year with the team. He led the Pirates in home runs five

Last year, Thomas attended the Mets Old-Timers Day, an event where legends of the team return to the stadium to reconnect with the team that they used to play for. Even though Thomas appeared in a wheelchair due to a fall he suffered the year before, he was still well enough to attend the event nonetheless. Both the fans and the organization were glad to see Thomas appear at the one stadium he never got to play in as a Met. Thomas was a Pittsburgh native and was very passionate about his charity work with Camp Happy Days-Kids Kickin’ Cancer, Courageous Kidz and the Millvale Meals On Wheels.

He was married to Dolores Wozniak, who passed away in 2012. They had eight children, twelve grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

The 34 home runs was a Mets team record until it was broken by David Kingman in 1975. The 94 RBIs was also a Mets team record until it was broken in 1970.

Following his tenure with the Mets, Thomas then spent time with the Philadelphia Phillies and Houston Astros before returning to the Milwaukee Braves and Chicago Cubs.

In his 16-year career, Thomas posted a .266 batting average with 286 home runs and 962 RBIs in 1,766 games. He was known to be very opinionated and was nicknamed “The Big Don-

When Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered an injury on the Chiefs second possession, all hope was lost. The possession before looked like the sign of things to come until that point.

However, it didn’t last long. Mahomes returned for the second half and did enough to lead the Chiefs to a 27-20 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. This secured their fifth consecutive AFC Championship Game appearance, a feat only accomplished by John Madden’s Raiders and the Tom Brady-led Patriots.

W h e n 3 7-y e a r- old backup quarterback Chad Henne checked into the game, the Chiefs had a 10-7 lead and the entire offense needed to be adjusted.

Fortunately for the Chiefs, a 39-yard run by running

back Isaiah Pacheco put the Chiefs at the goal line.

The drive was capped off with a 4-yard touchdown pass caught by tight end Travis Kelce.

A field goal by the Jaguars made the score 17-10 at halftime. Once the second half resumed, both teams punted twice. Mahomes’ return was unable to provide a spark for the stagnant Chiefs offense.

After two subpar possessions, a 27-yard pass to tight end Noah Gray put the Chiefs in field goal range. This did enough for the Chiefs to kick a field goal and extend their lead to 10.

The Jaguars would not go down without a fight. A scramble from quarterback Trevor Lawrence helped the Jaguars convert a third down after taking a sack on the first play of the drive.

A 37-yard pass from Lawrence to wide receiver Zay Jones put the Jaguars in the red zone. The possession was capped off with a 4-yard touchdown run from running back Travis Etienne.

On the next Chiefs possession, Mahomes began to look like himself. Multiple completions to Kelce put the Chiefs into Jaguars territory. A 14-yard run from wide receiver Kadarius Toney put the Chiefs at the Jaguars 3-yard line.

A touchdown pass to Marquez Valdes-Scantling extended the Chiefs lead to 27-17.

In the last seven minutes of the game, the Chiefs defense began to take over.

A three and out on the Chiefs next offensive possession gave the Jaguars another chance to cut the lead. Two plays later, a pass from Lawrence was intercepted by Jalen Waston. A punt from the Chiefs offense gave the Jaguars the football back. A field goal made it a 27-20 ballgame but a failed onside kick gave the Chiefs the victory.

Remembering the Daughter of Elvis FIONA SULLIVAN

On January 12, Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Priscilla and Elvis Presley, passed away at the age of 54.

she certainly did succeed at maintaining Elvis’s legacy of pioneering the pop and rock ‘n’ roll industry.

That Thursday morning, Presley was rushed to the hospital as a result of a potential cardiac arrest. A particular sad aspect is that she died only a couple of days after proudly watching Austin Butler win the Golden Globe for his role as Elvis in the critically acclaimed biopic.

Not only that, but Lisa Marie Presley also helped establish the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation which provides rent-free housing, child day care, career and financial counseling, and other tools which help people learn how to overcome homelessness.

Priscilla Presley released a statement that morning and expressed her love for her incredible daughter and her impact on the world. “It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us. She was the most passionate, strong and loving woman I have ever known. We ask for privacy as we try to deal with this profound loss.

Thank you for the love and prayers. At this time there will be no further comment.”

Presley became Elvis’s sole heir and inherited all of Graceland which was where a funeral service took place for her on January 22. More than a thousand people gathered on the lawn of Graceland to honor the incredible life of Lisa Marie Presley.

Lisa Marie Presley followed in her father’s footsteps and became a singer/songwriter with three different albums that all had multiple songs to reach the top 20 and top 10 of the Billboard 200 albums chart.

Much of her music was indie and rock, reminiscent of her father’s popular style and

Many close friends and family gave beautiful tributes about Lisa Marie Presley and the indelible impact she had on the people around her.

The Violet Hour at the Ferguson How collaboration led to a beautiful studio cast album

This past Friday, Broadway actor Santino Fontana visited The Ferguson Center for the Arts as part of a residency for the weekend since he stars in the original studio album of the new musical The Violet Hour with music written by Will Reynolds and book and lyrics by Eric Price.

This musical duo has had ties to the Ferguson for several years so when they decided to pursue this project in quarantine back in 2020, Bruce Bronstein, the director of the Ferguson, was happy to support their endeavors and the arts as a whole.

Based on Richard Greenberg’s play, the official website describes the musical as such: “The story is set on April 1, 1919, when John Pace Seavering, a young publisher, comes to possess a machine that inexplicably begins printing pages from books. Books from the future.

Page by page, John pieces together a vision of what the next century has in store for himself, his friends, and the world at large. And once he decides to change the future, the clock is ticking.”

The Violet Hour is unique in that it is a full studio cast recording with an orchestra and a stellar cast such as Santino Fontana, Jeremy Jordan, and Erika Henningson but it has not been transferred to Broadway yet. Reynolds and Price’s hope is that by exposing the story and

album first, it will gain attention and enough traction for a possible transfer to the world’s greatest stage.

This was one of the main reasons to bring Santino Fontana to Newport News so he, in addition to Reynolds and Price, could speak about his experience working on the show, why it’s such an important work of art, and just his experience working in the business in general and how he achieved success. Of course he also sang a couple of songs as well.

Best known for voicing Prince Hans in Frozen, Fontana also won a Tony for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for Tootsie and he also originated Prince Topher in Cinderella on Broadway.

Musical theater students got the opportunity to have a masterclass with him on Saturday and were able to sing for him and get meaningful feedback while also receiving advice on how to make a living out of performing. One

student even got to sing Love Is An Open Door from Frozen with Fontana as well. Overall, it was an enriching two days and be sure to check out The VIolet Hour now streaming on all music platforms.

‘The Price of Glee’ Is Old News

A new horror movie for the Halloween season

Review of the new Discovery+ three part documentary

“By 2020 all of them would be famous. And three of them would be dead.”

You have to be living under a rock to be unaware that three of the main cast members of Glee - a popular show about teen misfits who share a passion for the performing arts - have been found deceased in the years following the growth of the show’s popularity.

The new Discovery+ documentary attempts to take a deep dive into the events leading up to these deaths and wishes to answer the burning question, “Was Glee the cause?”

With Glee being my guilty pleasure show, a documentary about the deaths of three of its actors naturally caught my attention. I was eager to see all of the details play out over the three forty-five minute episodes. Once the show was available to stream, I started my free trial on Discovery+ and began watching.

Although I was hopeful this show would give new information surrounding the untimely deaths, I was disappointed to hear the same stories we have all been hearing since Cory Monteith, who played Finn Hudson, died in 2013.

It was the same news about Monteith’s drug and alcohol addictions at a young age and how they eventually came back when he relapsed after rising to fame.

The show did let audiences hear from many of Monteith’s friends including former roommate Justin Neill as well as Stephen Kramer Glickman - known for his role as Gustavo Rocque on the show Big Time Rush.

In the second and third episodes they begin to talk about the deaths of Mark Salling and Naya Rivera. Similar to the death of Monteith, the show did not really give any new information and watching felt like a waste of time.

After doing some research I found that many of the Glee cast denounces the documentary.

Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz, known for their roles on the show as Artie Abrams and Tina Cohen-Chang respectively, talk about the documentary on their podcast “And That’s What You REALLY Missed.” McHale has also shared various tweets about the documentary.

In the third episode, the documentary does bring to light that it wasn’t just the starring actors who have died, but also many members from the crew. There have been multiple deaths by suicide and heart attack throughout the run of the show and the years following.

This information is very interesting and important for the audience to be aware of; however, the documentary did not spend nearly enough time discussing these tragedies.

All in all, this entire documentary was overkill, hyping up old news and only brushing over the information that I believe needed more attention.

I personally do not believe the price of glee was worth the time it took to watch, so I urge readers not to waste their time with it either.

Nepo Babies Take Over Hollywood Are they worth all the fame and money?

A recent explosion of debate has swept the internet recently.

Are nepotism babies in Hollywood genuinely talented performers? Or are they children of prominent celebrities robbing others of opportunities and Hollywood of new, break-out performers?

So what and who exactly are these nepotism babies that the internet has been so obsessed with lately? A nepotism baby is any child who has received an advantage in a field or occupation of work by their parent’s or relative’s experience and assistance in that same field. It doesn’t solely apply to Hollywood, the fashion industry, or the music industry.

But the current backlash of nepotism in the entertainment industry has come from recent

observations that a majority of young celebrities have received some parental assistance in their climb to fame.

With the help of a recent New York Magazine cover story on the topic, the buzzword ‘nepo baby’ has infiltrated social media. In almost every tv show or film, there is most likely a nepo baby in the cast.

Maya Hawke, for example, who is best known for her role as Robin in Stranger Things, is the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke. Jack Quaid, who plays Hugie Cambell in The Boys, received some aid in his career from his mom, who is none other than the Meg Ryan.

The list of nepo babies goes on: Zoë Kravitz, Jaden Smith, Billie Lourd, Lilly Collins, Zoey Deutch, Maude Apatow,

Dakota Johnson, and LilyRose Depp.

In a TikTok posted by @ mizft, the content creator AJ Krakovsky dragged LilyRose Depp for her interview with Elle Magazine.

In the interview, LilyRose Depp commented “Maybe you get your foot in the door, but you still just have your foot in the door.

There’s a lot of work that comes after that.”

AJ Krakovsky responded to this interview in a TikTok by saying “I am begging Lily-Rose Depp and all nepo babies to just shut up and stop being delusional about nepotism playing a role in their careers.”

Another celebrity’s input on the controversy came

from singer-songwriter, actress, (and nepo baby), Lilly Allen.

Calling All Book Lovers!

An interview with the President of CNU Book Club EVELYN DAVIDSON

Do you love reading for fun, but as a college student with a busy schedule, you can’t seem to find time for it in between your academics? It’s quite common for college students to become so wrapped up in school assignments and extracurricular activities that it becomes a challenge to just sit down and read in their free time.

Sophomore, Candyce Harrell, had these exact thoughts. She told The Captain’s Log, “I start to lose sense of reading stuff that’s actually enjoyable with all the school work that I have, especially as an English major. A lot of times, we’re just reading for class. It’s hard to, after you finish all your homework, to be like, ‘oh let me pick up a novel.’”

This desire to maintain better reading habits led her to create the CNU Book Club.

Candyce told The Captain’s Log, “Me and my friends were talking late one night and we were thinking that we all kind of wanted, for the new year, to read a lot more, but we all struggled keeping ourselves accountable.”

The club meets monthly to discuss a chosen book and announce the following week’s book. The readings are typically young adult (YA) novels chosen by suggestion or vote.

Absolutely anyone can join the CNU Book Club, Candyce, who is double majoring in English and studio art, explained.

Members do not need to be English majors to participate.

“We hope that people can just find a space where they can talk to people that enjoy similar things as them and we also want them to get back into reading for fun again,” said Candyce.

DSU Take Over: Pajama Party

The Office of Orientation and Student Involvement hosts a fun event for students

This event was a great way to give students a chance to relax. The stress free environment was a great chance for students to get a break from their schoolwork. It also allowed them to meet and connect with new people.

On Saturday, January 21st, students were invited to dress in their comfiest pajamas and head out to the DSU for a pajama party hosted by Orientation and Student Involvement. The event lasted from 8 to 11PM and there were a variety of different “slumber party” activities set out.

There were activities for everyone to participate in.

In the Ballroom, there were many different board games, such as Apples to Apples, Sorry, Scrabble, etc. that students could play with a group. They even had a MarioKart game set up on the big screen. In the rooms surrounding the Ballroom, they had Guitar Hero and many fun crafts such as DIY essential oil rollers and body scrubs, friendship bracelets, some CNU themed coloring pages, and nail painting.

CNUTV has been around campus for several years now as the video wing of The Captain’s Log.The group records various events at Christopher Newport including Glow In The Darcapella, CNU Day, FallFest, the Involvement Fair, Light the Night, and S.T.R.O.L.L. To The Polls.

The group also does club promotional videos, last year they uploaded a video promoting the Knights of the Force, CNU’s lightsaber club. They also covered the raising of the Ukrainian flag on the Great Lawn during the 2022 spring semester. Videos are uploaded on their social media and YouTube pages for all to view. CNUTV has been able to record the happenings on campus for a while, but hopes to be able to expand even more.

Silverman says that anyone, regardless of experience, can join CNUTV and that their ideas are welcome. The group meets in the Newsroom in the David Student Union every Thursday evening to discuss their ideas on what and when to film. They’re currently trying to brainstorm various ideas for their first video of this semester as well as what new content they can introduce this semester.

While nothing is currently set in stone, they have a plethora of interesting video ideas they can’t wait to surprise their viewers with.

Like every other club, the group is trying to find new footing after the Covid-19 pandemic. The Head of Despite difficulties in CNUTV, Allison Silverman, growing staff, CNUTV’s

staff members are optimistic about their plans for the future. “Our equipment is very minimal, but nonetheless we are able to deliver a product that is able to impress people.” says CNU Staff Videographer Andrew Blanford, who joined this year. Silverman says on the current state of the group “CNUTV right now is kind of small, but we have big ambitions and we hope one day when we finally have enough people, we can do even greater things than what we are currently doing.”
