Recent crimes in the area highlight the need for caution both on and off campus. by lydia johnson lydia.johnson.13@cnu.edu

The sirens heard whirring past CNU are closer than students think given the recent crimes that have occurred just miles from campus— some of which have involved students. The last few months have seen several crimes committed in the area around the university. Though the campus itself

is secure, CNU PD urges students to take preventative measures both on and off campus to stay safe and avoid becoming a victim. “We’re a very safe campus, but we aren’t in a protective bubble,” CNU PD Operations Division Command Captain Scott Austin said. Austin has been with CNU PD for 17 ye a r s . He hold s a n nua l f resh men semi na rs

about crime prevention. Austin said CNU’s campus lies within the central precinct of Newport News, which has less crime than other areas of the city given the residential neighborhoods and businesses. Junior Hayley Martin realized there was no protective bubble when she was walking on East Campus on Sept. 4, 2015. Martin had just left dance team practice. Five or six of her teammates followed behind her. After crossing Warwick, Martin noticed a man mumbling and hanging around the

sidewalk. The man approached her holding a knife with a plastic cover. “That was definitely unnervi n g ,” M a r t i n s a i d a s s h e recalled the incident. Martin said she immediately turned around and motioned to her teammates to walk away. The girls ducked into CNU Village and called CNU PD. Martin said campus police officers escorted the man off campus and he is not allowed to return. Crime continued on page 3
