Administration strives to bring the student body together through the three-year housing requirement. However, students have split feelings about being required to live on campus most of their college careers. A recent survey conducted by a CNU student suggests students are open to a change to the policy.

The three-year housing requirement calls for compulsory oncampus accommodation until a student’s senior year. The requirement exists in the hopes of creating a cohesive and academically strong student body, according to Dean of Students Kevin Hughes.

Mixed feelings on three-year housing Three-year housing exists to build community, but students can struggle to find a place to live.

“As a junior, I was in [James River], which was kind of bad. When I came here, I was promised an apartment. If they can’t accommodate us with what they promised, they should let juniors live off campus if they want to,” said Bethany Burress, a senior who lives off-campus..

Survey sheds light on student opinion.

Burress wasn’t alone in expressing dissatisfaction with on-campus housing requirements. A survey conducted in fall 2015 showed support for ending the three-year housing requirement.

In an anonymous survey of 63 students, there were a significant number of enthusiastic responses to a housing policy that allows students to live offcampus for their third year.

In the survey, after providing their year in school and living situation, students were asked the following questions:

The Captain’s Log reported in April 2014. The freshman class that entered in 2012 had 126 more students than the anticipated 1,250.

The increase alone could fill 30 percent of Santoro Hall. In response to the housing shortage, James River Hall, originally delegated only to sophomores according to CNU’s website before it was changed in response to the crisis, was repurposed as general upperclassmen housing.

Rising interest in living on-campus also contributes to housing shortages, with Hughes saying in February of this year, “what we were seeing is that more and more students wanted to live on campus and were requesting it.”

Junior Taylor Godsey expressed frustration with this practice and said, “I think it is ridiculous because seniors can retain [housing], forcing juniors to live in sophomore housing.”

Godsey also said she, like Burresss, was placed in James River Hall as a junior when she needed to live in a Rappahannock or East Campus apartment. “I work in Newport news

The survey found that the majority of students felt that the three-year on-campus living requirement was unnecessary and restrictive and would enthusiastically support a change in policy that would give third-year students the option of living off-campus.

Responses to the question of whether changing the housing policy would affect campus life did not produce conclusive results because of a wide variety of results.

Within the 63 responses, the word “yes” appears 11 different times, the word “good” appears 10 different times, and the word “great” appears nine different times. The relative size of those three words compared to the rest of the words in the visualization (top right of the page) reflect their prominence and the overwhelming positive reaction students have towards the possibility of a change in CNU housing policy.

Housing shortage During the 2014-2015 housing lottery, an unusually large rising junior class created a shortage of beds on campus,

all year so I needed a 12 [month] lease and that is what led me to moving off because I would have been in JR,” she said. “I also am paying for my own tuition, so as its cheaper to live off campus, I chose to move off.”

Burress also said she would have stayed on campus if she hadn’t been placed in James River Hall.

“If it was between JR and off-campus, I would have lived off-campus.

If it was between the apartment and off-campus, I would have lived in the apartment,” she said.

Residential housing projects are slow to satisfy demand. Upcoming Shenandoah River Hall, originally projected to add 176 beds to campus for sophomores, has been delayed for the near future as administration considers expanding the scope of the construction to include more beds, The Captain’s Log reported in December 2015.

The first phase of Greek Village construction is planned to be completed by July 2016 and will add 100 beds, according to a report on non-general funds projects reviewed during the Oct. 2

The second phase of Greek Village construction is projected to include 190 beds with an estimated completion date of fall 2018, according to the same report.

Purpose of the threeyear requirement The university believes that threeyear housing strikes a balance between encouraging campus involvement and preparation for post-graduation life.

“I look at the depth of our student organizations and the involvement and I think that that’s certainly enhanced,” Hughes said. “There continues every year to be a greater sense of investment and emotional investment in Christopher Newport from our students and I think part of that is they’re on campus all day.”

CNU has designed its residence halls to be what the university terms “progressive housing,” meaning that students ease out of hall communities and into more independent lifestyles as they progress through their CNU career, Hughes said.

suite-style living, and then students can experience apartment life with their own bedroom and bathroom before deciding whether or not to continuing living on campus for their last year.

The housing process grew on junior Brett Nelson, convincing him to stay on campus rather than try to move off.

“Now that I’m a junior in Rapp and East Campus, I enjoy the three year contract.”

Another reason that CNU has instituted an on-campus living requirement is students tend to do better academically while living on campus, Hughes said. The three-year housing requirement does allow for certain exemptions. These include students who are married, students who are twenty-three years or older, students who have exhausted all financial resources, or students who have a medical reason to not live on campus. Sydney Gould, Ilana Lisann and Elisabeth Storm feel aspects of CNU from campus culture to food options create challenges for Jewish students.

Some Jewish students feel a little out of step with CNU’s culture, as they attempt to observe religious holidays and steer clear of awkward conversations with some Christian students.

The conversion conversation Some Jewish students feel their minority status when it comes to religion, and say they encounter situations where they feel like Christian students attempt to suggest a conversion or disregard their Jewish identity entirely.

Sophomore Ilana Lisann characterizes CNU as “very white, Southern, Christian ... a little conservative as well.”

Gould said other students “keep pushing” her to join a Bible study, despite expressing a lack of interest.

“I make it very clear, don’t try, I won’t listen,” senior Elisabeth Storm said. According to Storm, Jewish people do not actively seek to convert others, and see conversion as an unusual concept.

Lisann said the CNU community has not discriminated against her, but not all Jewish students feel they have had this same experience.

Storm said she’s generally met with politeness, but that she’s encountered “some cold people.” Gould said she once heard someone relate being Jewish to being black.

Trying not to pass out during Passover The celebration of Passover, a weeklong festival that commemorates Jewish liberation from Egyptian slavery, forbids Jewish people from eating food that contains yeast. The ubiquity of the substance in university food makes it “probably one of the most frustrating weeks of [her] life,” according to

Jewish holidays are often occur during days the university holds classes. Hanukkah was during finals week last semester. According to Lisann, Passover is during finals this semester. Students can be excused from class to observe holidays, but doing so means missing class time.

Culinary conf lict doesn’t end at Passover for Jewish students who observe kosher diets. Kosher foods are foods prepared in accordance with Jewish law. The diet prohibits pork and shellfish, and requires that dairy and meat be kept separate.

The requirements of kosher diets eliminate many options offered by dining services, with Gould saying that she can’t eat much of what’s on the menu. As a result, Storm also follows a kosher diet but has slightly more success in the lunch line.

She said that while choices are limited and cross contamination is a problem, dining services provides clean plates and works to meet her dietary restrictions when requested.

The challenge of the holidays During last semester’s Holiday Happening, Hillel, a campus club that provides social and religious programming for Jewish students, was given a tent.

Lisann said that this was a student effort to have a Jewish presence at the event. Storm felt that little support was provided, including no chairs or lights.

Hillel has around three to nine members that regularly attend events according to Lisann, who serves as vice president.

CNU doesn’t monitor emails and accounts on its servers, though state law allows it.

Sysco and three other companies serve campus to bring food to students’ plates.

Campus favorites like General Tso’s and buffalo chicken wraps are brought to you primarily by Sysco. Though the company serves plenty of campuses, the CNU dining experience stands apart thanks to its self-operated dining model.

The switch to Sysco Sysco has been CNU’s food supplier since the 1990s, when CNU switched from buyi ng from the state system to the sole-source vendor Sysco.

“The state system is basically there to provide food to the prison system,” Director of Dining Services Kevin Ososkie said. “We knew that we couldn’t satisfy our students with food that is being fed to prisoners, so we decided to go to a solesource vendor. So we put it out for bid … and Sysco won. And every time we put it out for bid they continue to win.”

The more than 20 year relationship between Sysco and CNU is reliable and thriving, Ososkie said. The salesman for Sysco visits once a week to check inventory and assess efficiency, according to Ososkie.

CNU’s pri ma r y vendor is Sysco, but the dining halls and what are considered exterior food places, such as Einstein’s and Discovery Bistro are all self-operated. This means that CNU employs its own staff and manages its own operations.

CNU has been sel f-operated since the early 1990’s, accord-

ing to Ososkie.

“In the state of Virginia, t here a re two sel f- operated universities: Virginia Tech and CNU. Most of the other schools h ave c o nt r ac t or s r u n n i n g the food services. [Being selfoperated] gives us a lot of flexibility,” said Robert Midgette, senior associate vice president for auxiliary services. “That means we’re looking to serve.

Example: we went to a school where that year the price of tomatoes went up, so they took it off the menu. We don’t do that. Our goal everyday is to make the dining experience seamless to the students. It’s challenging, because it’s food, but we try to minimize issues and bad experiences.”

Ososkie agreed and added that contracted food services, like Aramark and Sodexo, are “all about the bottom line.” Not having a partnership with food contractors allows more freedom in menu changes and decisions that are “independent of corporate oversight,” Ososkie said.

Making the menu Despite popular belief, the menus at Commons and Regatta’s are virtually the same.

However, both have a limited number of signature dishes, such a s C om mon s’ bu f fa lo chicken wrap.

The dining halls operate on what the administration terms a four week cycle menu, meaning that the main line and the Healthy Haven at both dining halls are the same, but on dif-

ferent weeks. For exa mple, Regatta’s food on week two would show up on the menu at Commons on week four. “That way students have more variety and more options,” Ososkie said. Subtle differences in food offerings are the result of varying equipment and dining hall design, according to Ososkie.

Sysco occasionally sponsors food shows at t he Vi rg i nia B e ac h C o nve nt io n C e nt e r, which CNU officials such as Ososkie and Midgette attend to view new vendors and products.

If selected items receive a favorable response, they’re placed on the menu on a more permanent basis. The most recent items added to the menus are the gourmet gluten free desserts, the f lavored water dispensers in Regatta’s and Commons, and the layered yogurt parfaits i n Ei nstei n’s. Accordi ng to Ososkie, these food shows provide the backbone of the menu desig n. The administration seems unconcerned about the rise of awareness on food allergies because it feels confident in its ability to “facilitate just about anything,” according to Ososkie.

“We’ve had some [students] with 10 or 15 different allergies, and it’s not easy. But we bend over backwards to meet their needs,” he said. Ososkie also commented that the food stations seem flexible in meeting allergen needs, so long as the allergy sufferer asks before eating.

CNU has three other companies that supply food: ChicFi l-A, Virginia-based dairy company Marva Maid and the Georgian bread company Flowers. n

According to Virginia’s Human Resource Policy 1.75, users of a state network should not expect their activity to be private.

CNU’s policy for email and portal accounts, which outlines usage and legality of CNU’s systems, states that the university does not monitor elec t ronic communications as a standard practice.

“Christopher Newport Information Technology

Services does not analyze, collect, or store any metadata related to emails, Internet usage or file storage for students, faculty or employees,” Lori Jacobs, director of public relations, said in an email.

The policy for email and portal accounts includes a caveat that reserves the right to monitor communications “under certain circumstances when such intervention is wa r ranted,” as t he policy states.

Virginia’s Human Resource Policy makes a more visible appearance on CNU Connect’s login screen, which states that Connect is subject to monitoring as it is a Virginia information system.

Ac c or d i n g t o t he lo g i n screen, usage of the system means the user consents to possible monitoring.

Jacobs said only a request by law enforcement would cause the university to investigate electronic communications. W hile IT services doesn’t look at the information, it is able to facilitate monitoring by law enforcement when deemed appropriate. n

It’s time for the end of the threeyear housing requirement The three-year requirement keeps students who want to leave campus in the lottery, leaving those who want to stay on campus with worse odds for getting the housing they desire.

Anybody who’s been a student at CNU knows that the housing system works quite differently from most universities. Instead of having guaranteed freshman housing and then being set free, you are required to live melanie occhiuzzo on campus for three staff writer years.

I am a sophomore student and have never been through housing lottery but I have felt its cruel sting among my peers and my own housing situation this year. I submitted late paperwork and decided to go random, and was assured by housing that I would have a spot on campus. While I did get my spot, and a fairly good one at that, many others were not so lucky.

Students should be able to have the choice to live off campus after their sophomore year.

Period. The strain and toll of this “guaranteed housing” policy has left many students with inconvenient living situations that could easily be remedied by living off campus. The lottery system is a tragically “fair” way of keeping housing from becoming a popularity

contest but despite the rules and regulations, people still get stuck living in places they’d rather not.

We have all heard of the juniors and even seniors condemned to living in sophomore housing because there are not nearly enough rooms available, as housing claims. But despite this shortage, you are still required to live on campus until at least senior year. Getting permission to live off early is a herculean effort on its own. This turns the friendly guarantee into a requirement that students come to loathe.

While housing is guaranteed for students, it doesn’t guarantee you a spot in the correct year housing. You are stuck in a lottery system that tears friendships apart, causes you countless hours of worry and could have an impact on your academics if you’re put in a crappy living situation.

While I agree with the fact that the housing guarantee could be seen as easier to an outsider, I find that it is an outdated policy that most universities don’t even bother implementing. Finding housing can be stressful enough as it is, adding a random lottery time and only having certain rooms available just makes it even worse for students. n

Graduation leads to reflections on growing together as a staff A&E editor Victoria Lurie musters up a dignified farewell as nearly all of her coworkers prepare to graduate.

The only thing sadder than leaving is being left behind, and I get to do a little of both.

Members of the Captain’s Log staff have been graduating steadily victoria lurie since I arrived, A&E Editor and while that’s a great reflection of the academic success of our staff, I’m always sad to see the latest crop of editors go. I’m so sad, in fact, that to cope I kind of just plug along and pretend that if I don’t look up and notice who’s missing, everything will be okay.

And then one day I looked up, and realized it was my turn to leave.

Kind of.

With the exception of Ben Leistensnider, our sports editor, all of the people who came in with me in 2013 will be walking out of our newsroom and across a graduation stage this spring, plus a handful of new staff members I have grown to love just as much. I’ll be disappearing quietly seven months later at a dessert reception for December grads that no one will attend.

But how we leave isn’t what matters.

What we did when we were here does.

Through my time with The Captain’s Log, our staff has been a rotating cast of dedicated, reliable people. But some of that cast didn’t rotate, and I took great comfort in knowing that I’d never be the only returning member, partly because it’d be sad without my coworkers, and partly because I’d surely destroy everything we’ve built if I were left to my own devices. (Shoutout to Ben, Jack and Josh for literally always being there.)

Thoughts of the people I will lose to the real world quickly turn to thoughts of the people I’ve gained, the people we as a staff gained. I’m so lucky to have worked with all of the amazing new staff members from this year; our writers and editors are some of the most creative, diligent people with the biggest hearts on campus. None of us would be doing this if we didn’t love it so much.

And god, do we love it. We love it so much we blow off class to make deadline. We love it so much we have stress dreams about layout every Sunday night. We love it so much we Macgyver a mattress and sleep in the newsroom.

When we sleep. If we sleep.

And I do sleep, once the Sunday night stress dreams are out of the way. I sleep well knowing that my paper is in the hands of people way more capable than me, who will catch me when I fall and fix my hideous layout when I’m not looking.

I’ve been blessed to work with a team of people who carry each other and care about each other. People always talk about friendships forged in battle, but I prefer the ones forged in ink.

The Captain’s Log has set the bar too high for a real life newsroom. No one in the real world is going to be so cool with being a captive passenger in a golf cart as I blatantly ignore traffic lights. No one in the real world is going swoop in and write my whole section

My staff—all of my staff—have taught me invaluable things about journalism, about dedication and about who I am as a person. No matter where I go after this, no matter how many different newsrooms or classrooms or boardrooms we scatter ourselves to, I will always remember my CLOG family and the opportunities they gave me and continue to give me, and how this trite op-ed was the best goodbye I could muster. n

Most importantly, no one in the real world—not even my own parents— would care so much about me that they constantly make sure I don’t fall through New York City sewer grates or get hit by a cab. Seriously, my CLOG fam could have left me in a bagel line in Manhattan. And yet, despite being two heads shorter than everyone else, they always remembered to include me in the headcount.

Although I am not graduating in two months, a large part of me is. And while I’d love to fling myself at their ankles and make it impossible for them to leave, that’s not the dignified goodbye they deserve, and it might just terrify all the newly-minted editors that have to work with me in the fall.

T hey were able to work with the Rural Appalachian Improvement League (RAIL) to help combat rural poverty and rebuild the town since the decline in the coal industry.

Members of FCA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, served in Vero Beach, Florida through an organization called Epic Missions. This organization provided students with a place to stay for the week while they assist the community.

“This was my last spring break and I could not think of a better way to spend it than by encou ragi ng ot hers a nd growing my faith and friendships in FCA. God is great and He was everywhere and within everyone on this mission trip,” senior Shayna Maust said. n

Marching to the Sweet Sixteen

For the first time in CNU history, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams will play in the Sweet Sixteen during the same season.

Women’s basketball The women’s playoff journey started by traveling to Pennsylvania, taking on Saint Joseph’s C ol lege of M a i ne a nd host Muhlenberg College.

The first round game pitted CNU against St. Joseph’s on March 4. The first two quarters were extremely tight, with the score being tied 25-25 headed into the half.

CNU pulled away in the third quarter by limiting the Monks to just six points. In the end, that momentum carried CNU to a 65-47 victory.

The next day, 65 once again proved to be the magic number as the 21st-ranked Captains ruined the playoff aspirations of the 11th-ranked Mules by

coming away with a 65-42 victory.

The Captains defense had an incredible game—limiting the 20th best offense in the country to five points in the second quarter.

CNU’s offense was a force to be reckoned with as well, with sophomore Jasmine Bonivel scoring a career-high 20 points against the Monks and sophomore Makenzie Fancher had a career-high 21 points against Muhlenberg.

The Captains will have to overcome a m ajor obst acle if they hope to advance any further. Next up for CNU is a March 11 matchup against third-ranked Scranton—one of the few undefeated teams left.

Men’s basketball The men’s team headed into the NCAA tournament riding the momentum from a massive 68-67 overtime win over Salisbury for the CAC Championship on Feb. 27.

Captains raced off to a 43-24 lead at the half against Lycoming College in the first round, hosted at CNU on March 4.

Although Lycoming made an promising comeback, the Captains held on for a 79-71 victory.

It was the 27th win of the year, which set the program record for most in a season.

Sophomore Aaron McFarland, who scored the game winning free throw against Salisbury with .4 seconds in the CAC, led the Captains with 21 points.

It looked like the Captains’ historic season might end in the second round when their opponent, N Y U, star ted the game of f with a 8 - 0 scoring run.

CNU finally managed to contain the Violets’ massive players to regain their momentum and win 67-64. CAC Player of the Year sophomore Marcus Carter led with 21 points.

No win is guaranteed at this point, but the Captains have a promising chance of advancing further, as no ranked opponents stand before them and the Final Four.

Athlete spotlight: Meaghan Galvin

CNU upsets Catholic CNU’s women’s lacrosse team pulled off an underdog miracle by topping the tenth-best team in the country 9-8.

Since joining CNU’s women’s lacrosse team as a freshman for the 2014 sea son, junior midfielder Meaghan Galvin (pictured right) has been one of the Captains’ most valuable players. In the team’s 15-5 blowout win over Lebanon Valley on March 5, she passed the 100 goals and 150 points career marks.

Her impact to the team has even been recognized by rookies who have only just started playing with her. “She sets an example for everyone on the field by the way she handles the ball in high pressure games. We can always count on Galv to win the draw or score the free position, even in the toughest games,” said freshman Maria Gianelle.

Galvin scored 42 goals and 19 assists her freshman year—an effort that led her to be named the Capital Athletic Conference player of the Year. Galvin finished the season with eight hat-tricks and scored twice in her first 14 games.

Her sophomore campaign was just as successful, scoring 45 goals and 22 assists. She was named to the All-Conference, All-State and All-Region First Teams for the second year in a row. Illustration By Chris Whitehurst and Ben Leistensnider

The Christopher Newport women’s lacrosse team stunned the tenth-ranked Catholic Cardinals on March 3.

To make the unimaginable a reality, the Captains had multiple players tally points, including sophomore Catie Chess, junior Meaghan Galvin, freshman Sarah Culver, senior Kylie Chaplin and freshman Maria Gianelle. On the defensive end, freshman Emma Walsh had 14 saves and scooped up five ground balls to stop the Cardinals.

CNU got its first goal within the first minute of regulation time. Freshman Julia Golden passed the ball over the defense right into Chess’s stick, who fired a shot right into the back of the net to give them a fast 1-0 lead.

Although Catholic retaliated and secured the next two points on the score board, the Captains got the ball back on a caused turnover by Chaplin and a save by Walsh. Culver got the ball off of Walsh’s clear and drove straight to the cage to score the second goal and tie the game 2-2.

After the Captains and the Cardinals traded tallies, including a free position goal by Chaplin, the home team pushed the pace of the game to get a lead of 5-3. Culver slipped by her defender and scored her second goal of the game right before she added a third two minutes later in a man up possession.

Chaplin floated a pass to Gianelle who scored her first collegiate goal to give the Captains a three-goal lead.

The Cardinals were able to put one past Walsh to get their fourth point, but then Chaplin and Golden caused a turnover in order for CNU to have the ball back.

Chess used her speed to sprint around the crease and placed a perfect shot in the back of the net giving them a comfortable lead of 7-4 entering into halftime.

After the break, Walsh saved a free position attempt by the Cardinals before junior defender Mariah Ginebra stopped their momentum by making a huge stick check. A fter a successful clear from Walsh to Galvin, the Catholic goalie committed a foul. With a wide-open goal, Galvin fired a shot into the back of the net making the score 8-4.

Though the Cardinals were able to get two more points on the board, Culver took charge and scored the ninth goal for the Captains with 13 minutes remaining.

Catholic inched their way back into the fight by scoring two goals, putting the game at 9-8 with six minutes left.

CNU fought hard on the defensive end ensuring that the Cardinals didn’t get any more points as sophomore defender Corbyn Hale caused a turnover on the defensive end before Walsh made another acrobatic save.

With seconds remaining in regulation, the Cardinals gained possession and snapped off one more shot before the last horn of the game. The shot sailed wide and the Captains locked up the victory.

CNU hopes to continue the momentum from this upset victory as they travel to take on Wesley College on March 12. n Caitlin King is a member of the women’s lacrosse team.

Softball’s hot start continues The second-ranked Captains have crushed their opponents, winning the first ten games.

A new ballpark hasn’t kept the Captains from returning to their old winning ways. Since construction of the softball team’s stadium was finished during the offseason, CNU has gone a perfect 10-0.

The season started off in style with a promising doubleheader sweep of William Peace—the first game of which ended early due to the eight-run mercy rule.

The 12-4 victory set the tone for the season so far, as the second-ranked Captains have averaged 9.4 runs per game.

S en ior S c o op Si mon h a s been an important part of that offense and leads the team in many different categories: a .480 batting average, a .920 slugging percentage, 13 runs scored, 13 RBIs and three homeruns.

accustomed to sending the ball past the fence—six other players have hit homeruns this season.

No offense is guaranteed a victory, however, without a strong arm on the mound. CNU returned senior Hanah Marshall, who has four wins on the season already. Marshall leads the Captains’ pitchers with 12 strikeouts.

T he r e s t o f t he r ot at ion is made up of new faces, as juniors Maiven McKnight and Tara Heatwole transferred to CNU this season. The two have already made an impact, with McKnight collecting two wins and Heatwole posting a teambest 1.68 era.

The Captains will look to continue their win streak as they travel to Georgia for the NFCA Leadoff Classic on March 11 and 12. The two-day tournament will pit CNU against Font-

It’s no mystery that music controls mood. So if you could control the music, then you’re a kind of puppet master of the party, and Party Genius is your new best friend.

The Need Earlier this year, senior Nick Ciardiel lo created an app cal led “Par ty Genius” to enhance the music experience of small parties who may not have a DJ. After noticing the styles and music choices from various social events, Nick was inspired to create an app that would allow the party guests to choose what they want to hear.

“At most social events there’s music playing in the background, and more often than not the person who’s playing may have not put effort into creating the playlist. The music is a crucial part of a party that’s often looked over, and I wanted to help make that part easier,” Ciardiello said.

How It Works The main function of Party Genius is to play the role of an electronic DJ for smaller parties. A party host would be able to suggest songs to the app, which will then create a playlist for that certain party.

Once the guests arrive at the social gathering, they will be able to request songs that they would like to hear. Not only will the app help enhance the experience for the guests, but it will also allow the party host to enjoy their time and not worry about the music that is being played.

not published until this past November. Party Genius was the first app that Ciardiello created, along with being the longest project he has ever worked on.

During this time of development, Ciardielllo had to focus on different types of programming language and figure out what features on the app would help it become the most successful.

The version of the app that went live in November is fully functional, but Ciardiello can see room for improvement. However, after all the time he’s invested in the app he doesn’t see a need to brainstorm Party Genius 2.0 just yet.

App to Success Since the publication of the app in November 2015, many people have downloaded and used the app with success.

And the success doesn’t just stop at the app. After its release, Ciardiello was promoted at his job to be a Lead Mobile Developer; the creation of this app was to help Ciardiello put his foot in the door when it came to mobile development.

Although there was no profit made from the app, it gained a lot of recognition on campus. “It is really nice when some people recognize me by the app I’ve made. Those moments when someone comes up and tells me how much they love my app make it all worth it.” n

Movie Review: Funny or Die’s “Art of the deal” Comedic website Funny or Die capitalizes on the GOP, and trust us, you’ve never seen Johnny Depp quite like this.

Donald Trump is played by Johnny Depp (above) in the film depiction of Trump’s novel “Art of the Deal,” which the creators Funny or Die intentionally filmed oversaturated and grainy à la the ‘80s, the year in which Trump’s novel debuted. Funnyordie

Donald Trump’s novel of the same title is brought to fruition with Johnny Depp playing the titular character.

All the secrets and schemes of how Donald Trump made it to the top are satirized in this depiction of his bestselling novel. This is a free movie that “Funny or Die” made with a star-studded cast. You can watch it with ease on their website and it will be the greatest fifty minutes of your day.

Johnny Depp is unrecognizable as the prolific business tycoon. Unlike in his previous roles where there is still that hint of the character being Johnny Depp somewhere on the inside —that does not come across in this movie. He truly embraces and encompasses all aspects of Trump’s physicality, tone and bravado, disappearing into this unique character.

The supporting cast is just as splendid as Depp. Featuring Alfred Molina, Robert Morse, Jack McBrayer, Henry Winkler, Alf and Patton Oswalt, the movie has an onslaught of comedic cameos that will keep you thoroughly entertained.

One aspect that I have to praise is the production design. The movie is able to bring the feeling of watching a cheesy 80’s film back to screen. It has the oversaturated color palette, witty title cards,and the most abrasive sound

effects—it is simply glorious.

It is reported that the film was shot in secret over four days, which I find to be remarkable.

They kept it hush-hush so word would not spread to Trump himself and did not advertise it until it was already polished and completed. As wel l as being filmed covertly, Depp brought on his own make-up team to help with the prosthetics to resemble Trump as best as possible.

The comedic aspect of the film has to be commended as well. There are great running bits that are incorporated into each scene and keep building to a wonderful climax.

Funny or Die also did well with merging modern figures into the film. Both good and bad figureheads of the present are incorporated into the storyline and are seen working with Trump in the ‘80s when it never happened in actuality.

Donald Trump has already become a parody of himself at this point in election season, and this portrayal sheds light onto that key aspect.

The work feels like a great SNL skit elongated to fifty minutes and it is just the right amount of Trump one needs in their life. n

Poet to visit peninsula for immigration lecture Thursday, author and poet Dina Elenbogen will be down Warwick at Temple Sinai leading a discussion on her book about Ethiopian immigrants in Israel.

NEWS RELEASE What does a “home” look like?

Dina Elenbogen addresses that very question in her new book, “Drawn From Water: An American Poet, An Ethiopian Family, An Israeli Story.”

The book details the lives of Ethiopian Jewish immigrants in Israel as they work to settle in a new country so different from the one they are used to.

This free event is open to the public and will be taking place on Thursday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m., at Temple Sinai, located within walking distance from campus on Warwick Blvd.

Students and faculty of all religions and backgrounds are invited to journey with Dina on this road to self-discovery as she discusses her experiences in Israel and what inspired her to write the book, as well as determine what a home truly is. Anybody with an interest in issues of immigration and assimilation will find the discussion both enlightening and significant to the issues of today’s world.

According to Christina Verderosa of Temple Sinai, “In her book, Dina Elenbogen tells the story of the

Ethiopian Jews in a very personal way, but also takes on the larger question of home. We are so excited to have Dina come to Temple Sinai to tell this story.” Elenbogen’s visit is a direct result of a partnership with the Jewish Book Council Network.

Thirty years ago, Operation Moses airlifted thousands of Ethiopian Jews to Israel, where today they, immigrants from other years, and descendants form a community over 100,000 strong. Elenbogen uses the stories of children undergoing this harrowing process of assimilation into a new country and culture to raise questions about immigration and cultural identity. The author also analyzes immigration on several levels, including its successes, failures, and its ultimate repercussions on the lives of these immigrants.

Ring by Spring? Be sure to have the perfect proposal Spring is one of the most popular times for couples to get engaged, but be sure to plan out exactly how to ask.

The season of love is upon us, and if it isn’t already, your Instagram feed will soon be flooded with pictures of happy couples and sparkling engagement rings. You may be one who begrudgingly scrolls past these photos, or a true romantic who double-taps every one of them that you see. Or maybe you are getting ready to propose to your significant other yourself.

If so, you are in the right place.

This is the countdown of the most important parts of any proposal.

Ambiance is everything It goes without saying that a moonlit walk on the beach or a candlelit dinner are generically romantic gestures. While these things might seem a little cliché, they can definitely set the mood. Make sure you know exactly what you want your proposal to look like long before your date arrives.

She may want to have her nails done It might seem superficial, but many girls are going to want to snap a photo of their ring after the proposal to post on social media and send to family and friends.

This can be complicated if you are trying to keep it secret, but if you think this will be important to her, try to give her a little heads up.

Consider hiring a photographer This one is simple — sometimes, iPhone shots just aren’t enough. Obviously, there are occasions where a photographer might be out of place, but more times than not, you’re going to wish you had those professional photographs to look back at in the years to come.

An element of surprise is the entire game In a facebook poll, more than 85% of males and females who responded said that being surprised was or will be the most important part of a proposal.

So avoid saying “Hey, let’s go out to dinner tonight because I want to ask you to marry me” and you’re already on your way to a great proposal.

Have a ring According to a study done by Daily Mail, a third of surveyed brides-to-be said that “the biggest faux pas was proposing without a ring.” It might seem obvious, but don’t be too eager.

It is better to wait and have a ring than to propose without one.

Timing is probably more important than you think Nicholas Sparks said it best (per usual) when he said “If you propose at, let’s say, appetizers or during the meal…she’s going to run out to call her mother and call her sister and call her best friend and then you sit there by yourself.” Make sure that you time your proposal so that it won’t interfere with the rest of your romantic evening together.

Keep your lips sealed As tempting as it might be to tell your buddies about how/ when you’re planning on popping the question, it isn’t worth the risk. Chances are, your friend from work is actually your significant other’s cousin’s best friend’s husband, and the only thing worse than hearing “No” after you propose is hearing: “a little birdy told me that this was going to happen tonight.”

These tips can be essential in planning your big spring proposal. But then again, your significant other may not really care how you propose. Know your (hopefully) future fiancé well enough to recognize which of these things are really important The truth is, your significant other might not care if there’s a photog rapher and they might not care if the proposal is extravagantly planned and meticulously carried out.

Then again—it might be all they care about. If you don’t know them well enough to be able to decipher the importance of the things listed above, then maybe you aren’t as ready to be engaged as you think. n

Lost authenticity at Aroma’s CNU students who are searching for quality coffee may be trapped looking for love at the bottom of their empty Aroma’s cups.

Coming here is like when you date the first person you see out of loneliness and regret it afterwards, knowing that so much better is out there, so much better.

There are no other coffee shops (sans Starbucks) in the area. So you go to Aroma’s.

Not by choice, not because you desire it, but because you have a need and it slightly scratches that need. It doesn’t satisfy your itch, but it band-aids it just long enough to forget about it for a morning.

Aroma’s is the girl you don’t like spending money on, the guy you wish never said yes to that first date, the girl who reminds you of a watered-down version of your dream, the guy who looks European but thinks like a John Deere. Aroma’s is a very temporary solution to a very real problem. The problem? Good coffee in a good shop.

So what really, explicitly, categorically, specifically, has erred with Aroma’s?

In truth, it’s everything and nothing.

It lives up to the stereotype that coffee houses ought to be stuck up and rude, mediocre to

standard quality, over-priced to over-valued, depressingly to angrily employed.

Do I tap it and scram? Do I take a sweet bite then run? No, Aroma’s is a girl I’ve filled an entire coffee-punch-card with.

Aroma’s is a girl I keep hitting up when I need a fix and have nowhere else to turn. Aroma’s is the guy you know treats you wrong but you’re too stubborn to please yourself home alone.

This is an epidemic among young people and we must band together to learn to fight lonely depression and not cave in to hedonistic self-destructive behavior we know we’ll regret.

There is better out there! Keep searching! One day we will find love deserving of us, and one day we will drink decent coffee at decent prices served by decent people. n
