Nine Residents Pull Papers for City Council Race THE LATEST: As of Thursday afternoon, nine residents had pulled nomination papers to run for one of two City Council seats up for election in November.

Per the city’s new district voting, two seats in two newly formed election districts—District 1 (the northernmost district) and District 5 (along the city’s southeastern border)—are up for election on Nov. 8. Only residents in those two districts can run for Council this fall, and only residents in those districts will vote for their respective candidate.

Councilmen Sam Allevato and John Perry’s four-year seats are up for election.

Allevato lives in District 2 and cannot run for reelection, while Perry lives in District 5. Perry has stated publicly that he does not intend to run for his seat.

Seven of the nine residents who have pulled paperwork live in District 5: former mayor Larry Kramer; Mission San Juan Capistrano Executive Director Mechelle Lawrence Adams; Trails and Equestrian Commissioner Brian Maryott; Parks, Recreation, Senior & Youth Services Commissioner Robert Parks, Ronda Mottl, Kathleen Strukoff and Jim Schneider.

Thus far, only two residents have pulled paperwork for District 1—former Council candidate Sergio Farias and Cultural Heritage Commissioner Nathan Banda.

El Nido Mobile Estates Rent Hearing Continued to Aug. 24-25 THE LATEST: The city of San Juan Capistrano held a rent control hearing for El Nido Mobile Estates on Aug. 2 in response to park owner Richard Worley seeking a rent increase from his tenants.

Last year, Worley sought a $641 increase per month, which was denied by the city’s hearing officer and City Council as it was not found to be a “fair and reasonable” increase. The amount was lowered to $37 a month.

At the Aug. 2 hearing, Michael Roush, who once again is serving as the city’s hearing officer, reviewed financials and briefs presented by attorney Robert Coldren, representing Worley, and attorney Bruce Stanton, representing the El Nido Estates Steering Committee.

Roush made a determination, per the city’s municipal code, that the maximum allowable annual increase should

THE LATEST: After cancelling the widening of the two-lane stretch of Ortega Highway in January—known to many residents as the Ortega “chokepoint”—the City Council is being directed by City Manager Ben Siegel to allocate $231,156 from the city’s Capistrano Circulation Fee Program to reimburse the Orange County Transportation Authority and Rancho Mission Viejo, LLC for the widening project’s design expenses.

According to the Aug. 16 agenda report, $175,171 would be reimbursed to OCTA, while $55,985 would be reimbursed to Rancho Mission Viejo.

“The design and right-of-way phases of work for the project were funded by Measure M2 grant funds through the Comprehensive Transportation Funding Program administered by OCTA,” the city manager’s report reads. “Grant matching funds for the design phase were secured through a Funding Assistance Agreement with RMV. Because the project was cancelled prior to completion of the design phase, reimbursement of funds provided

by OCTA and RMV is required.”

Skatepark Design Progresses with Workshop THE LATEST: It was obvious that momentum for a skatepark is still going strong

in San Juan Capistrano as more than 60 residents of all ages filed into the San Juan Community Center Wednesday evening for a public skatepark design workshop.

City officials, skatepark design consultant Aaron Spohn of Spohn Ranch and organizers with local nonprofit Capistrano Grind gathered at the community center to collect ideas and feedback on potential features for the city’s future skatepark, which will be located at the San Juan Capistrano Sports Park.

Spohn kicked off the workshop with a presentation on park specifics, including opportunities for mixed use space, seating and spectator areas, different types of skating features, protective fences and ideas for creating an iconic design unique to San Juan Capistrano. Following the presentation, participants had the opportunity to fill out surveys and sketch out ideas to get the ball rolling.

South County Roadway Construction Update THE LATEST: The construction of the La Novia roundabout in San Juan Capistrano is well underway following Interstate 5 ramp closures in late July. The closures allowed for a restructuring of the previous four-way stop at Valle Road and La Novia Avenue.

City Traffic Engineer George Alvarez said currently there are no scheduled upcoming ramp closures.

Meanwhile in San Clemente, progress is continuing on the Avenida Pico widening, and next week, some significant on- and off-ramp closures will take place.

“Construction on the Avenida Pico segment, (which will start the) traffic switch, marks a significant milestone that will, for the first time, transition southbound traffic onto the new I-5 bridge over Avenida Pico,” said Eric Carpenter, public information officer for the Orange County Transportation Authority. “The switch will require significant lane reductions southbound on the I-5 freeway between 10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19 and noon Saturday, Aug. 20.”

an Clemente and San Juan Capistrano’s silk road is set to open at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14.

La Pata has been a dream for local residents for many years who sought quicker access between the communities and better distribution of traffic in the area.

Tom Frank, the city of San Clemente transportation engineer manager, said the road has been in the city’s General Plan for more than 20 years. Frank said the road will have numerous benefits beside traffic control, including routes for emergency medical teams and as well as provide an additional evacuation route. San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), about two miles south of San Clemente, has made some residents want an alternate route should anything go wrong.

Environmental studies on the area began in 2009 and ended in 2011. The road is about 2.3 miles and was extended 1.8 miles to connect the two cities.

La Pata, starting from San Clemente and traveling north, has a pedestrian bridge people can utilize. Two other bridges are crossings for landfill operations, which look like culverts but are actually meant for garbage trucks that run under the road to the Prima Deshecha Landfill. The garbage trucks will only come from San Clemente, Frank said.

Construction of the road began in 2014, and the first phase is all but complete.

PHASES TWO AND THREE The next phase in the project is to complete the La Pata widening on the San Juan Capistrano side of the project.

Two additional lanes will be installed at the north and southbound La Pata entrances near San Juan Hills High School.

Phase three will include roundabouts for Camino Del Rio in San Clemente, where La Pata will feed into a portion of the way north from Avenida Vista Hermosa.

Frank said the city has completed the design stage and is working to get the project out to bid to contractors this fall.

“The county said the Camino Del Rio connection completion is around April,” Frank said.

The cost for the roundabouts is $1 million.

“We’re resurfacing the entire city portion of Camino Del Rio,” Frank said. “The intersection improvements will help manage the traffic, especially near that greenbelt where there’s a lot of pedestrian traffic.”

“We’re going to stripe (Del Rio) as a three-lane roadway, with one travel lane going down from La Pata to the existing Del Rio with two lanes going up,” Frank said, adding that the improvements should calm traffic noise.

“A lot of San Clemente residents will likely use La Pata rather than I-5 north,” he said.

LOCAL OFFICIALS ‘THRILLED’ San Clemente Mayor Bob Baker said he is eager to see the traffic benefits for the residents of San Clemente as well as neighboring citizens.

“I think it’s going to be a terrific traffic reducer, and now for all the folks who live in Rancho Santa Margarita and Forester and Talega, if they want to go to Mission they have to go south and then north,” Baker said. “La Pata will make the trip much easier for them, and it’ll be great for everyone.”

Like most major projects, it takes time to complete something of such a grand scale.

“The bottom line on this is funding, and we cobbled together county funding with different sources from some assistance from the city and taking money promised in the future and spending it now,” Baker said.

In the end, Baker said the establishment of the route is a positive addition to the area.

“I am absolutely thrilled that this project is coming to fruition, and we’re going to have this route,” Baker said. “It’s going to be a tremendous time-saver for people. We all spend plenty of time in our vehicles in Southern California, and this will be good for everybody.”

County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Lisa Bartlett said the completion of this project should have major benefits not only for local commutes but also for emergency medical service providers.

Frank said county officials have been speaking with local EMS personnel.

“The opening of La Pata with the gap closure is really significant for the county because it improves regional mobility in that entire area,” Bartlett said. “We’re in gridlock most of the time in our major arterial routes, and we’ve only got the I-5.

So this will provide for a redundant route and allow for the residents to choose an option for traveling around South Orange County.”

Bartlett said the opening of the Avenida La Pata connection will help emergency medical personnel get to residents and Mission Hospital.

“I think common sense will show that having that gap open will increase mobility and routes and options for first responders,” Bartlett said.

Bartlett said although obtaining funding can delay projects, some unforeseen circumstances did arise in the process of

constructing the road.

“During the excavation period, our crews discovered fossils of ancient sea life, and those are some of the things that caused a slight delay in the project because we had to get archeological teams out there to uncover all of the artifacts,” she said.

Air quality improvement by alleviating traffic density is another benefit likely to be seen from the opening of La Pata.

Although the road should make travel easier, there isn’t much lighting after drivers make their way just past the entrances from Vista Hermosa or Ortega Highway near San Juan.

“Our Public Works Department has addressed all the issues concerning lighting, and it’s important to have adequate lighting for the ridership, but at the same time we don’t want to have light pollution for the surrounding residents,” Bartlett said. “Public safety is our primary concern on La Pata.”

In preparation for the road’s completion, the San Juan Capistrano City Council voted unanimously on June 21 to move forward with renaming La Pata Avenue in San Juan to Avenida La Pata, making it consistent with the road’s name in San Clemente.

Police spoke to the subject in the Impala and found out that the subject works at the business complex and was sleeping in the car. Deputies found nothing suspicious.

Wednesday, August 3 DEFRAUDING AN INNKEEPER Verdugo Street, 26700 Block (7:53 p.m.)

A business reported that a customer in her 60s was refusing to pay her bill.

DISTURBANCE Del Obispo Street, 32000 Block (6:09 p.m.)

Juveniles were reportedly refusing to leave the Capistrano Valley Christian School campus and were hiding behind a wall next to the church. The caller was concerned because she needed to lock up before leaving. The group eventually left.

SUSPICIOUS PERSON/CIRCUMSTANCES Doheny Park Road, 33900 Block (6:21 p.m.) A man was seen lying in the driveway entrance to Costco and was “almost run over by several vehicles.” Another caller said someone got the man out of the roadway but he was still in the plot, “possibly arguing with another man about whose corner it was.”

DISTURBANCE Via la Mirada, 26800 Block (6:05 p.m.)

A patrol check was requested for a man heard yelling obscenities throughout the day. The caller said the residence was a known “drug house” with a white van parked in the driveway. Deputies spoke with the subject, who said he was “playing a heated game of ping pong” and “participants were yelling at the game.”

VANDALISM REPORT Rancho Viejo Road, 31400 Block (5:25 p.m.) A man at New Method Wellness reported that an unknown person shot at his windows. “Loud pops” were heard but nothing else was seen. The window was broken around 4:30 p.m. and resulted in $600 in damages.

A drunken man was repeatedly entering and exiting the Bagel Shack. The subject was warned by deputies not to loiter and create a disturbance. The caller complained that once deputies left, the man returned, but the caller did not want prosecution.

WELFARE CHECK Paseo Adelanto, 31700 Block (11:55 a.m.)

A patrol check was requested on a bike trail near Los Rios Park for an intoxicated man on the ground with two small children. After making contact with the subject, deputies arrested the man for a warrant. The 33-year-old was being held without bail at the Theo Lacy Facility. A hearing was scheduled for Aug. 11.

SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE Driftwood Court, 33000 Block (6:48 a.m.)

A caller reported passing a man in the park who was hitting himself in the face and had a “possible machete” sticking out of his backpack. The man was last seen headed toward Stonehill and was gone by the time police arrived.

SUSPICIOUS PERSON/CIRCUMSTANCES Camino Capistrano, 32000 Block (4:12 a.m.) A patrol check was requested at Pizza Hut for a drunken, shirtless man walking around the caller’s truck, asking for help and trying door handles in the plot. The man was described as a “buff dude” in his 40s with tattoos all over his upper body.

A caller reported a white pickup camper shell at the end of Alipaz Street with subjects living in it and using “nature to relieve themselves.”

A local nonprofit 1/11 committee is also seeking donations for the ball—everything from gowns and shoes to accessories and donations of professional services.

Longtime San Juan resident and nonprofit member Kathy Hooper first started the annual collection of gowns in 2009.

Hooper said it was the height of Operation Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom, and she knew a lot of Marines would be deployed with their significant others left to take care of finances on their own.

Hooper knew that Marine Corps Ball expenses can easily add up to $1,000 for couples to go and wanted to make attending the event a reality for the 1/11 men and women. Each year the gown drive has grown in size—Hooper said what began as three racks of dresses has turned into an entire warehouse full of gowns.

“If all the women in San Juan donated a formal or semiformal dress and cleaned them up, think how loved those girls would feel,” Hooper said.

Festival of Whales Logo Contest Reopens to Public For the first time in five years, members of the public are invited to submit their California Gray Whale-centric logo artwork to be the face of the 46th annual Dana Point Festival of Whales. The contest had been exclusive to Dana Hills High School students since 2011 when festival organizers launched an art-focused program to involve area youth.

Entries should showcase the California Gray Whale for which the festival was founded. Each year, grays make a 10,000mile, round-trip journey from Alaskan waters to Baja California lagoons where calves are birthed before the trek north.

The whales generally pass through local waters from fall to spring.

Logo entries must be submitted by midnight on Tuesday, Sept. 20. Entries will only be accepted via email. Participants can send logo designs to dpfestivalofwhales@gmail.com.

From the pool of entered designs, the Festival of Whales Foundation Board will choose five finalists. The entries will then face a public vote via social media.

The winning design will be featured on all of the festival’s promotional materials, including clothing, flyers, print and digital advertising and public buses.

The winning entry will join the Festival of Whales logo ranks alongside renowned artists like Wyland and John VanHamersveld.

t seemed that on July 26, the two hotel projects looking to come into downtown San Juan Capistrano had worked through the last piece of red tape. After years of hearings and working with city staff and commissions, the city’s Planning Commission unanimously approved both projects, each with one condition.

“Folks, I think we have two hotels on our way,” Planning Commissioner Mark Speros said merrily before adjourning the meeting.

But more delays are on the horizon for both hotels as three appeals objecting to the Planning Commission’s approvals were filed at City Hall by the Aug. 10 deadline.

The Planning Commission’s approvals of the incoming Hotel Capistrano by Kimpton, a 102-room hotel to be constructed between the Egan House and the Esslinger Building along Camino Capistrano, and the Inn at the Mission, a 124-room hotel to be operated by Marriott International’s Autograph Collection and constructed at the corner of Ortega Highway and El Camino Real, have both been appealed, meaning the projects now must go before the City Council.

Prior to the appeals, both the Cultural Heritage Commission and the Planning Commission had reviewed the projects most recently at the end of July. The Cultural Heritage Commission recommended each project be approved, even though some concerns were voiced from a few commissioners regarding “view corridors” and whether the Inn at the Mission’s two-story restaurant would be too tall and block views of the Great Stone Church.

When the hotels came before Planning Commission, a letter from Attorney Erik Friess was included in the discussion.

Friess laid out point by point why Bill Griffith, owner of the Egan House and Esslinger Building, opposed the Hotel Capistrano as proposed. City staff went through each point per the request of Commissioner Tim Neely, and presented objections to each argument made by Friess. The commissioners were satisfied, and went on to approve both projects.

On Aug. 10, the City Clerk received an appeal from Friess and Griffith, which has the same July 26 letter to the Planning Commission attached. Friess wrote that The Capistrano Dispatch August 12-25, 2016

the Hotel Capistrano “project as approved violates the San Juan Capistrano Municipal Code, various city plans and policies, and the California Environmental Quality Act.” The letter details the issues brought up at Planning Commission, including contesting the hotel’s height, setback and floor-area ratio.

Two other appeals were also filed on Aug. 10 against the Inn at the Mission’s approval.

San Juan Capistrano resident Marc Weintraub of the group “Save Our Mission – San Juan Capistrano” wrote in his appeal that the commission’s approval of the project “violated the California Environmental Quality Act because they did not address significant new impacts (such as resources and views) arising from substantial project changes, among other things. The actions also violated the Development Agreement statute.”

An appeal from David Wood, of Hotel Capistrano’s developer Stratus Development Partners, states that, “although [they] are not opposed to development of a hotel on the property proposed for Inn at the Mission, [they] do have deep concerns with the hotel development as proposed because that development violates and contradicts provisions of the city’s municipal code, along with specific planning policies and procedures established by the city.” The letter goes on to list the negative impacts the development will have on the adjacent Little Yellow House.

The next step for both hotels will be to have the appeals heard by the City Council.

CUSD Board Votes to Place $889M Bond Measure on Ballot If approved by voters, the tax would impact all school district residents with the exception of Rancho Mission Viejo

oters in the Capistrano Unified School District will decide on Nov. 8 whether they want to pay more taxes to help the district leverage state funds to pay for over $800 million in deferred facilities maintenance.

After heated public comment and debate, the CUSD Board of Trustees voted 6-1 Wednesday night, with Trustee Jim Reardon dissenting, to call a school bond election within the newly formed School Facilities Improvement District #2, which encompasses the entire district except for Rancho Mission Viejo.

Over the last several months, trustees debated back and forth over whether to pursue smaller regional bonds, a districtwide bond or an SFID with Rancho Mission Viejo carved out. On July 13, trustees voted 6-1, again with Reardon dissenting, to pass their intent to form SFID #2.

If 55 percent of voters approve the proposed $889 million general obligation bond in November, residents living within SFID #2 will be taxed $43 for every $100,000 of assessed value on their homes. While staff has estimated that $43 per $100,000 is the maximum tax rate needed to fund the bond, the ballot measure language states that the rate can technically reach $60 per year per $100,000, which Reardon noted could realistically happen if interest rates rise enough over the next 10 years.

How CUSD will spend the potential new funding is still a topic of contention, especially among residents who have criticized the district’s lack of transparency and history of overtaxation in Community Facilities Districts.

Carolyn Cavecche, president and CEO of the Orange County Taxpayers Association, told the board in July that the district’s bond measure met most of the association’s criteria, with the exception

of a list of projects on which the board is committed to using the bond’s revenue.

Several trustees voiced concerns over the lack of a detailed project list and directed staff to work on a more specific list of facilities improvements to be completed.

On Aug. 3, Cavecche said in an interview that the revised draft resolution the district sent her met the minimum criteria for what the association feels “taxpayers should look for in a school bond.”

On Wednesday night, several trustees aimed to alleviate transparency concerns by emphasizing that the bond would include accountability measures such as a Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee and advisory groups in each region of the district that would relay their schools’ needs to the oversight committee and trustees.

The committee would be charged with ensuring the bond proceeds are used only for the school facilities projects listed in the district’s bond project list.

The most contention Wednesday night seemed to stem from a letter signed by 11 South Orange County elected officials opposing the district bond. Spearheaded

by Mission Viejo Mayor Frank Ury and Rancho Santa Margarita Mayor Tony Beall, the letter ultimately asked the district to “determine realistic needs and exhaust all potential sources of funding before [going] back to the taxpayers for more money.”

Following an extended closed session at the beginning of Wednesday’s meeting, Board President Amy Hanacek reported that trustees voted 6-1 in closed session to initiate litigation against Ury and Beall.

Hanacek said the board directed staff to request the Orange County District Attorney and California Attorney General investigate whether the city of Mission Viejo or the city of Rancho Santa Margarita has misused public funds to influence the outcome of an election. CD

SAN CLEMENTE Ride-Share Program Coming This Fall During the Aug. 2 San Clemente City Council meeting, Council members approved a measure to accept funding for a ride-share program intended to accommodate passengers who will be affected by the discontinuance of Orange County Transportation Authority bus routes 191 and 193, which run through San Clemente. The routes are expected to be cut on Oct. 9.

Councilman Tim Brown brought the idea to Council earlier this summer, after seeing similar programs in larger cities that use the services for personal transportation. Think of the project as a public Uber or Lyft, the popular ride-sharing applications.

The city’s proposed plan will allow people to use an app on their phones to alert a driver who will take passengers to various stops along a proposed route.

“We have two years of funding and we have to have a cooperative agreement in place with OCTA,” said Tom Frank, city transportation engineer manager. “We’re likely going to publish a request for proposal and go out to multiple providers so we can address the different issues, such as people with disabilities.”

Frank said the number of vehicles running the routes will depend upon how many people utilize the service.

“Whomever is going to provide the service will be coordinating closely with us to get a pool of applicable drivers,” Frank said.

Frank said the city’s goal is to have at least six riders per hour (72 per day) between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. for the first year of service. After that, the goal will be to get 10 riders per hour (120 per day). Those numbers are a little lower than the current ridership on the OCTA buses.

The city has not contracted the service yet and no route has been planned, but

Frank said the service will stop at most of the existing bus routes. Additionally, the city will try to get the service operational by the time the bus routes stop, but it’s going to be close.

“It’s a pretty lofty goal because there hasn’t really been a program like this in the nation,” Frank said. “We’re just trying to see if we can get the agreements in place to make it happen. So far, the companies we’ve talked to sound like they’re pretty motivated.

They said they can act quickly on their side.

So from my perspective, the biggest challenge is to see if we can get the legal agreements in place by the deadlines needed so we can get the agreements in place.”

DANA POINT City Council to Hold Public Hearing on Strands Gates During the Aug. 16 City Council meeting, a public hearing is scheduled regarding a zone text amendment that would allow the use of fully retractable gates in the Strand community.

In July, the Planning Commission voted to send the recommendation to approve the zone text amendment to the City Council on a five to zero vote.

The amendment would allow the use of fully retractable gates at the mid-Strand beach access point, the central Strand upper access point and the central Strand lower access point.

Commissioners along with city residents who spoke at the Planning Commission meeting said they were in favor of the gates for security reasons.

In April 2016, the California Coastal Commission’s staff recommended a settlement agreement after six years of litigation—the settlement included an agreement to modify the local coastal development program to include designated hours of operations for the access points.

Local programs gearing up for new season on the gridiron

It’s that time of year again, when the Friday night lights flicker on and hundreds of local football players take the field for the new season.

But this will not be just an ordinary high school football season. In the offseason, the CIF-SS, the high school sports governing body, voted for and implemented a new competitive equity-based playoff format, which shuffled teams into newly formed divisions. Playoff divisions are no longer based on enrollment. Instead, the CIF-SS created a power rankings index using past performance, strength of schedule and postseason performance to determine which programs will play in certain divisions.

Several San Juan Capistrano programs are poised for big seasons, and in our annual preview we get you up-to-date on all five of the teams in town.

44 passes for 513 yards and three touchdowns in 2015. Both return to lead the receiving corps. Returning senior tight ends Jack Montgomery and Ryan Smith will add another wrinkle into the Stallions’ offense.

The running back tandem of Brock Cazel and Cole Suchesk did plenty of damage last year, and are poised to continue the trend as seniors. Last year, Suchesk ran for 467 yards and a team-high eight touchdowns while Cazel ran for 336 yards and five touchdowns.

A rivalry game with Capistrano Valley on Sept. 9 and a high-profile game against Edison out of the Sunset League on Sept.

16 will ensure the Stallions are battletested by the time South Coast League play begins.

‘Fearless’ Stallions Hoping Physical Edge Leads to Success

T

here is no denying JJ Glass’ impact on the mentality of the San Juan Hills High School football team.

The 6-foot, 200-pound nose guard is a gritty player, and he leads by example.

During the Stallions’ Aug. 9 practice, every player on the field flocked to a small circle just behind one of the end zones to take part in what they call the “sumo drill.” In the drill, two players are singled out by the coaching staff to square up against each other, one-on-one, and try and push the other out of the ring, much like a Japanese sumo.

With the whole team watching and music blaring, Glass was thriving in the environment. The senior defensive standout bounced from player to player, pumping them up with encouragement and getting the intensity up to his level. When it came time for his turn in the sumo ring, Glass pushed his opponent out of the circle within a few seconds.

Glass and his fellow seniors have been attempting to instill a tough mindset into the team this offseason, and so far it appears to be working.

“Our motto this year is the word ‘fearless’,” Glass said. “I think you have to come out and not care who you’re going against. You have to act like he’s the best player in the world. You have to compete and never give up, just keep on going no matter what.”

Glass and his defensive teammates are leading the charge in the buildup to the new season. It’s no surprise, given that the Stallions front seven is a veteran group with experience playing alongside each other.

Returners Noah Edgerton and River Stewart join Glass, who had six tackles for a loss and two sacks last season, on the defensive line. Junior Austin Gifford and senior John Hernandez will lead the linebacker unit. The two combined for 72

total tackles in 2015.

The team’s leading tackler from last season, safety Cameron Buchanan, returns and will play alongside fellow safety and returning starter Matthew Barrows.

“I think we’re a more physical football team this year and I hope that shows through,” head coach Aaron Flowers said.

“Those guys up the middle (on defense) are some pretty hard-nosed guys.”

The Stallions will be without last year’s standout quarterback Patrick O’Brien, who is playing at Nebraska. Juniors Matt Rodriguez and Doug Jackson are in the midst of a competition for the starting job and Flowers hopes to have the role filled soon.

Whoever gets the nod to start at quarterback will be surrounded by veteran playmakers.

Senior receiver Jacob Huff terrorized opposing defenses last season as O’Brien’s go-to option. Huff caught 82 passes for 1,298 yards and 10 touchdowns. Senior Cayden McCluskey proved to be a reliable vertical threat as a junior, catching

Following Landmark Season, Warriors Look to Reload

t would be hard to find a small-school football program in Orange County with more recent success than Saddleback Valley Christian.

The school tucked against the rolling foothills just off Camino Capistrano has been home to a small-school powerhouse two years running. The Warriors own a 27-2 overall record and two San Joaquin League Championships dating back to the start of the 2014 season.

Last year, the Warriors had their most successful season to-date. Under the guidance of first-year head coach Brendan Chambers, SVC barnstormed its way to a league title, the CIF-SS East Valley Division Championship and appeared in the CIF State Division V-A Championship game, where they lost to St. Bernard’s.

Last year’s Warriors squad was loaded with seniors who had played alongside each other for most of their lives (the school is K-12), and many of those impact players have now graduated. Due to the large number of graduating seniors, several other players transferred out, leaving SVC with more than a few holes in its roster as it heads into the 2016 season.

The news of the transfers struck a blow to the program, but one major returning piece the Warriors will rely heavily on this season is senior quarterback Cade Henjum. Henjum was the engine that kept the SVC offense humming last season. He threw for 2,672 yards and 38 touchdowns

while also running for 485 yards and six scores.

Henjum’s presence on the roster has sparked the work ethic of several underclassmen, Chambers said.

“It’s a different year for us as a rebuilding process so a lot of guys were on the fence if they were going to come back … and Cade just came in and worked every single day. No matter who was out here, he was going to put in the work,” Chambers said. “A lot of those younger guys who didn’t play a lot last year but played a bit followed and showed up in the weight room and showed up all summer long to put in the work because they saw (Henjum) do it.”

Sophomore running back Isaac Moreno showed he has what it takes to contribute on offense last year, when he was subbed in as the team’s primary back during the team’s CIF SoCal Regional bout with Kennedy. SVC’s starting running back, Dalton Lohan, suffered an injury on the Warriors first series and Moreno, who stands 5-feet3-inches tall, took over, running for 102 yards and a touchdown in a win that sent SVC to the state bowl game.

Senior Jon Robinson will also play running back and double as a linebacker on defense.

The Warriors’ receiving corps lost its most productive receiver in Savai’i Cravens, who transferred to Linfield Christian in the offseason. Senior Cole Etchells and junior Jack Deavila will be the primary targets for Henjum in 2016.

On defense, the Warriors return cornerbacks Jackson Greene and Marc Audet.

The two combined for 72 total tackles and four interceptions last season.

SVC will be making one of the larger jumps in the county in terms of CIF-SS divisional placement this season. Due to the CIF-SS division realignment initiative that passed this offseason, SVC has been moved from Division 13 to Division 8, and could face much larger public schools in the postseason.

St. Margaret’s is Ready for New Challenges

A

s freshmen, Auston Locke and Nick Amoukhteh would get together and dream big.

Locke, a wide receiver for the St. Margaret’s football team, and Amoukhteh, a linebacker, are a pair of rare exceptions in high school football. Both got significant playing time as first-year players. During practices or after games, which, more often than not the Tartans won, Locke and Amoukhteh would ask each other the big question that lingers over many successful small-school programs.

“Wouldn’t that be great if we got to play the big public schools in the area?” Locke remembers asking his friend.

The two would see the wins and league titles pile up, and they helped St. Margaret’s capture a CIF-SS Championship in 2014. But it was always fun for them to ponder that lingering question.

Amoukhteh and Locke had to wait three years for that wishful thinking to turn into reality.

As part of the new CIF-SS divisional realignment, which was based on the previous two years’ results and strength of schedule rather than enrollment, the Tartans were moved up from Division 13 to Division 7 in 2016. They now have the opportunity to square off against county teams like Huntington Beach, Tustin and Canyon if they advance to the playoffs.

“It’s something we’re really looking forward to,” Amoukhteh said. “It’s been our goal since I was a freshman to be able to step up football-wise.”

“We really wished that we could play against those (bigger schools) and now we get the chance. We’re stoked,” Locke added.

The Tartans were members of the Academy League in 2015, but that league has been disbanded. That means St. Margaret’s will be considered a freelance league team and will have to earn an at-large playoff berth based on their performance and strength of schedule. The team could face a potentially tougher first-round opponent as a result.

The Tartans have big aspirations for the upcoming season, and for good reason.

They will field an explosive offense, led by a 3,000-yard passer in senior quarterback George Krantz, and a veteran defense.

Krantz threw for 3,165 yards, completing just over 62 percent of his passes for 43 touchdowns to 13 interceptions.

Krantz’s mark of 43 touchdown passes was the second-highest in Orange County last year.

weapon, receiver/running back Nick Shanks, to graduation. But the offensive depth chart this year looks well-rounded.

Locke, who caught 55 passes for 1,085 yards and 18 touchdowns last season, returns to lead a talented receiving corps that includes junior Ryan Cragun. Cragun, who head coach Stephen Barbee regarded as the Tartans best all-around player, broke his foot five weeks into the 2015 season and did not return but is back to full health.

“We have a lot of weapons. I’ve been playing with these guys since sophomore year and I know (Locke) can bail us out on fourth down situations and that (Cragun) has great hands,” Krantz said. “You can look at both sides of the field because you

know you have all these weapons and you can just trust throwing to them.”

St. Margaret’s plans on using several running backs to fuel its high-flying offense in 2016. Barbee said sophomore Koa Todd and Marcus Knight, a transfer from Washington, are getting a majority of the touches in training camp.

The Tartans scored an average of 42 points per game last season. Even with the loss of Shanks, Barbee anticipates his offense will be able to keep its foot on the pedal.

“We’re very explosive on offense … (opponents) are going to double some guy and the other one is going to make you pay. It’s an exciting time right now,” Barbee said The Tartans’ experience on defense figures to be a major strength. Amoukhteh, the team’s middle linebacker, has played in 42 varsity games. Two-way starters like Cragun and Todd add to a defensive unit that cut its teeth as underclassmen last season.

The Tartans may not have a league to play in, but they will be tested in several key games this season. A Sept. 16 matchup against Bishop’s of La Jolla and back-toback games against Brethren Christian (Oct. 28) and Crean Lutheran (Nov. 4), two former Academy League rivals, highlight the schedule.

St. Margaret’s will certainly be testing unchartered waters in the coming months. They’ll be a freelance team with the chance to finally find out how they stack up against larger public schools in the postseason. First, they have to get there. But it is a scenario the program has

looked forward to for a long time.

“For us, we’ve always gotten the knock that it’s a small school. Even though we’re playing in state title games and stuff like that, you still get the ‘You don’t play anybody.’ (remark),” Barbee said. “We’re ready to show that we play some good football down here … we have to focus on what we have at hand and take care of that and hope for the best on the playoff situation. Hopefully our body of work will speak for itself.”

Impact Veterans Ready to Lead a Young JSerra Team through Tough Schedule

T

he JSerra football team did not linger on last year’s heartbreak very long. In fact, it was almost impossible for the team to feel the effects, considering 22 seniors graduated from last year’s group.

The Lions will field a young team in 2016, and many of the players were not around to witness the emotional rollercoaster that was the final two weeks of last season. With its back against the wall, JSerra surged late and won its final two games of 2015 against Trinity League rivals Mater Dei and Orange Lutheran, only to miss out on the playoffs because of a coin flip loss.

There are several returning players who played major roles on the late-charging JSerra team from last year, but many of the Lions are starting the season off with a clean slate.

The young team will be tested early.

Head coach Jim Hartigan said the schedule the Lions will play is the toughest he has ever coached, and will be the toughest schedule for a football team in school history. The Lions always play in the high-profile Trinity League, but their non-league schedule will feature three road games and two Thursday night games, meaning the Lions will be playing

on short rest and limited preparation time.

Eight of the 10 teams on the Lions’ schedule are members of the newly formed CIFSS Division 1, the top postseason division in the section.

“There are a lot of things that may not be in our favor but we’re going to have to find a way to rally through that,” Hartigan said. “We’re going to have to learn how to fight through adversity, particularly on the road, against some tough teams.”

system at quarterback, rotating Matt Robinson and Riley O’Brien under center depending on the game situation. This year, Hartigan and his staff handed the starting job to Robinson, a rising junior.

O’Brien, a senior Penn commit and threeyear starter, will still be called upon to run some wildcat offense, but his focus will be needed elsewhere on the field as a defensive back, receiver, running back and kick returner.

Robinson was instrumental in the Lions success last season, and Hartigan believes the quarterback has gotten better over the offseason. He showed the staff he was capable of taking over under center in an intense passing league schedule. Robinson has also improved his ability as a runner, and has flashed the ability to extend plays with his legs throughout summer practices.

“He’s really elusive. If he sees an opening and nothing is open, he’ll scoot out there,” Hartigan said. “His arm is also a lot stronger and he’s got good spin on it and has really good touch on the long ball.”

Robinson’s ability to scramble and make plays with his feet fits in with the Lions’ game plan of getting their speedy playmakers into space for big gains. Senior running back Nick Callan, junior Eli Jefferson and sophomore Thomas Huff all stand under 5-feet-9-inches tall, but possess breakaway speed, according to Hartigan.

Eagles Hoping New Look Leads to Success

I

t will be a season filled with firsts for the Capistrano Valley Christian football team, as the program will be under the guidance of first-year head coach Rick Curtis.

It will not, however, be Curtis’ first time holding a clipboard.

Curtis is entering his 40th year of coaching in the Southern California area. He most recently served as the head coach at Santa Margarita, where he coached from 2013-2015. Curtis had previous coaching stints at Laguna Hills, Servite, Irvine, University and Northwood, where he was the head coach for 13 years.

Curtis was brought on to lead the football team as well as serve as the athletic director at CVCS. Curtis replaces former coach Eric Preszler, who left for Arrowhead Christian.

Curtis inherits a young team that finished in a tie for second place in the San Joaquin League last season. The Eagles were eyeing a playoff berth, but lost a coin flip tiebreaker and were pushed out of the 2015 postseason.

Curtis brings with him a new set of standards and a new football system to which the Eagles have spent the offseason adjusting. Their practices are more regimented, as a large group of inexperienced players are learning the ropes alongside a small group of veterans. “(Curtis) is very disciplined, which is very good because it keeps us all in line,” senior quarterback Dawson Piper said of his new coach. “It keeps it all running smooth.”

Piper has been designated “field general” by Curtis and his staff and will play both quarterback and safety on the defensive side of the ball.

The senior signal caller threw for 1,889 yards and 16 touchdowns as a junior and has learned to work in the new staff’s offensive schemes, which will feature more The Capistrano Dispatch

players in the backfield and a few more power formations, according to Curtis.

“Physically, (Piper) has the tools,” Curtis said. “He’s starting to learn how to read defenses and run the show and be the game manager. He’s the general, and that’s what we’re looking for.”

All-San Joaquin League selection Nolan Kahal will play an important role for the Eagles, serving as both a tight end, middle linebacker and occasional fullback. Kahal’s physicality, coupled with the speed of senior running back Garin Green, will give the Eagles a dynamic backfield when they decide to run the ball, Curtis said.

One key to the team’s success this season will depend on the offensive line’s ability to mesh together and pave the way for the team’s speedy playmakers.

CVCS returns Collin Thornton (guard), Matt Moscosa (guard) and Jacob Carreon (tackle) to the offensive line. Defensive end Keston Katijani and tackle Allan Cai return.

Piper (safety) and Kahal will help anchor the Eagles up the middle on defense. Rising sophomore Jack Roberts, who Curtis labeled as the program’s likeliest breakout player, will play outside linebacker.

‘Suicide Squad’ Box-Office Death

A

fter nearly a decade of Marvel’s cinematic universe breaking through to mega success, the superhero hype has been dying down a lot the past couple of years. Warner Bros. and DC are finally trying to play catch up, and it’s backfiring terribly. Both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice were negatively polarizing, and their newest addition, Suicide Squad, suffers from many problems itself.

One of the maladies is its script.

Suicide Squad has popular villains like Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) and Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) recruited by U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) to bring down the Joker (Jared Leto) and a dangerous, enigmatic entity. This would be an easy enough plot for an R-rated action movie, but because Warner Bros. gave filmmaker David Ayer a PG-13 movie to work around, the film is stuck with never being daring enough and coming across as a corny live-action cartoon instead.

Another issue is the editing. Suicide Squad allegedly had up to eight ghost editors and it really does feel like it when you view the film. There is no proper introduction to the feature, and the pacing is off for the entire runtime. The one saving grace is the underappreciated chemistry between Smith and Robbie. The two previously worked together on the also underwhelming Focus last year, and despite the mediocre content they’ve been given, they clearly enjoy working with each other and are naturals together.

Maybe one day we’ll see the pairing put to good use. CD

om Ducey, originally from San Clemente, and his rock and roll band, Superfused, will perform at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18 at Knuckleheads Sports Bar & Grill, as part of their Orange County tour. Ducey graduated from San Clemente High School, class of 1987.

Ducey performed in bands in the area from 1992 to 1996. He said his style of music relates to the grunge and beach flavors of the mid-90s.

“One of the bands I was in had a guitar player (Paul Weaver) from Wigan, England. I met Paul through the musicians section of LA Reader in 1994,” Ducey said.

“So, we formed a band together and called it B9. We played all over Southern California in 1994 and 1995. When the band broke

up Paul moved back to England. In 1996 I moved to the Memphis area and returned to the West Coast in 2004, eventually landing in Reno, Nevada, for the past 10 years. I did not hear from Paul again until a few years ago when he found me on Facebook.”

Weaver and Ducey are now back together to try another band project, and they’ve written songs together with thousands of miles between them, Ducey said.

“We have found a great and talented musician from Los Angeles named Martin Blasick to join our band as bass player,” Ducey said. “Martin helps us complete Superfused in fine style.”

Chamber’s annual Rodeo Week leads up to the 16th annual Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo

elebrating its fi fth year of Rodeo Week events and activities, the San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce is inviting residents and visitors to participate in some spirited Western festivities leading up to the 16th annual Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo.

Mark Bodenhamer, executive director of the chamber, said the weeklong celebration is meant to help extend rodeo weekend while getting the community involved and excited about celebrating its Western heritage and equestrian lifestyle.

The chamber kicks off the week with a mixer on Thursday, Aug. 18 from 5-7 p.m. at American Horse Products and The BrewHouse, located at 31896 Plaza Drive in San Juan. Bodenhamer said the Westernthemed evening is a great opportunity for businesses to network while also getting into the rodeo spirit. Admission is $15 per person, which includes two drinks and appetizers.

Rodeo Roping to Barbecue Restauranteur Bad to the Bone BBQ owner reflects on rodeo way of life

I

f you’ve been to Bad to the Bone BBQ in San Juan Capistrano, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that owner Marty Wells comes from a rodeo background.

Known for its authentic wood-smoked BBQ, Bad to the Bone’s décor envelopes diners in a rustic, Western atmosphere, complete with a wall of old rodeo photographs—some of Wells, others of his friends and rodeo icons.

Raised on a ranch in Sulphur, Oklahoma, Wells grew up around horses, cattle and, of course, rodeo. His father, Jerry Wells, was a legendary American Quarter Horse Association trainer and breeder who traveled the globe and won over 60 world titles during his career.

Wells said after a few years in college, he knew he wanted to do rodeo professionally. For about six years, he traveled across the country as a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, competing coast to coast in tie-down roping events.

Formerly known as calf roping, tie-down roping is based on the age-old practice of ranchers gathering cattle to doctor them.

Wells said roping was always something he dreamed of doing professionally.

The PRCA roper moved to California in 1999, where his wife, Mary, hails from.

Mary trained horses in San Juan, and so they moved to town. Two years later, Wells

found himself competing in the first ever Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo.

Wells said it was fun to be able to participate in his hometown rodeo, a rodeo that would go on to become one of the biggest and richest in the country.

“The passion they have to give back to the cowboys is something you just don’t see,” Wells said of the Ranch.

Wells and his wife are co-owners of Bad to the Bone, which started out as a 30-seat sandwich shop in 2005.

“There wasn’t much real barbecue that I could see in South Orange County when I moved here,” Wells said. “So I had a passion to bring the type of cuisine that I grew up on to Southern California, and put an Orange County spin on it to make it work.”

The couple can now fit 100 guests in their restaurant and serve up high quality meat that’s been smoked overnight in hickory wood pits.

“Authentic BBQ is smoked with wood rather than oven-baked, and then finished over the grill with sauce,” Wells said.

Reviving the Western Way of Life The annual Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo highlights San Juan’s equestrian heritage

he Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo, held each year in San Juan Capistrano, is heralded as “the richest two day rodeo in the nation” with 30 contestants in each event.

Gilbert Aguirre, Rancho Mission Viejo executive vice president, first came up with the idea for the RMV rodeo 16 years ago.

“Our number one goal in starting this rodeo was to keep the Western heritage alive,” Aguirre said in a 2014 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association article. “We were the biggest ranch here and saw the Western way of life MOMENTS IN slipping away. This rodeo TIME

In the PRCA story, Aguirre said he also wanted the event to be first class for both fans and cowboys. To achieve that goal, the Ranch brings in the best cowboys and ensures they have the best horses and bulls.

RMV rodeo fans also get to enjoy bucking and timed-event chutes at both ends of the arena. Aguirre said in the 2014 PRCA article that the reasoning for that setup was because people sitting at each end paid just

as much as the others to be there.

Each year, rodeo events include saddle bronc, bareback and bull riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping and team roping. One-third of all participants come away from the event with money.

Funds raised from this event honor the old cowboy tradition of “passing the hat” in support of a family in need. Over the last 15 years, the rodeo has distributed more than $1.6 million to local San Juan Capistrano charities and nonprofits, including the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley and J. F. Shea Therapeutic Riding Center.

Another local connection to the rodeo comes via a PRCA member who calls San Juan Capistrano home. Marty Wells, a former tie-down roper, is the owner of Bad to the Bone BBQ in San Juan. During the Chamber of Commerce’s annual Rodeo Week, many cowboys make their way to his restaurant to enjoy local BBQ. Tiedown roping was originally known as calf roping, and is not only a classic Old West ranch chore, but one of the oldest of rodeo events. to the Bone who might be willing to share some stories.

Voted on by the citizens of San Juan Capistrano as part of the Open Space initiative, the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park was acquired by the city in 2008. It was part of the land known as “the ranch field office/ lemon grove area” next to Ortega Highway and the “rodeo/polo grounds” south of Ortega Highway from the city limits to La Pata. Benefiting the entire community, this area provides equestrian, recreational and agricultural areas and preservation of 42 acres of open space. The area is forever restricted to these uses and also provides for the continuation of the annual Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo.

This venue is well-known for competitive recreation events, shows and other activities including English horse shows, Western horse shows, Olympic trials, soccer tournaments and, of course, the annual rodeo. The Ranch and the citizens have ensured that Reata Park and Rancho

Mission Viejo Riding Park are forever part of the landscape of San Juan Capistrano.

You can spend a “Moment in Time” throughout the year enjoying this venue, but on August 27 and 28, you can enjoy a rodeo and harken back to the days of the old west in San Juan Capistrano.

ocal nonprofit CREER Comunidad y Familia celebrated the conclusion of its annual summer program for youth at the Historic Town Center Park on Saturday, Aug. 6. Children danced, sang and showed off their writing, pottery and painting, while proud parents gathered around to take photos of their children’s big moment.

In order to raise funds for their annual summer program, CREER is hosting “A Night of Music & Food with Slim Man” from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18.

The fundraiser will benefit the local nonprofit’s summer and afterschool programs. Jazz singer, writer and cook Slim Man will perform live at 19 Sports Bar & Grill, and will also teach guests how to make his Hail Caesar! Salad. The Tale of Two Post-60 Online Dating Experiences

Dating via the Internet can result in success for some and frustration for others

O

nline dating is one of the tools seniors can use for meeting a mate.

Two women contacted me this week, sharing their vastly different online dating experiences. One found success; the other was met with frustration.

Cheryl said, “I would like to share my recent good fortune and experience with online dating. I began corresponding with a widower in October 2015 on the dating site OkCupid, which allows subscribers to write detailed information on their profile and also offers thousands of questions that can be answered on a variety of topics. I have been divorced twice.

“When we started corresponding, he had answered nearly 500 questions, and I had answered over 600, and we both had added comments to many of our answers.

So we already knew a lot about each other.

“We remained on the site communicating for a few weeks before moving to personal emails, both agreed to progress slowly and eventually we moved to phone calls and then to Skype. This occurred over a period of several months.

“Early on, I verified information he gave me (checked his website and ‘Googled’ him). Our correspondence enabled us to learn more about each other and gain confidence in our relationship. We are both 69 and live 600 miles apart. When I flew to meet him in April, there were no surprises. We totally enjoyed each other’s company and made a commitment to continue to develop our relationship.

“He drove to my home in July. We spent two and a half weeks together, during which time he met my family, friends and my church family. Everyone ‘approved’ of him! We have been blessed to have found love and have made a commitment to travel ‘the rest of the journey’ together.

“Our correspondence and willingness to be totally open and honest with each other along with both of us wanting a longterm relationship were the keys to our success.”

Cheryl’s point about both of them wanting a long-term relationship is vital to relationship success. Also, she and her man emphasized the benefit of using Skype before meeting in person.

She said, “Skype enables each person to see the other’s facial reactions and enhances the intimacy of the communication. We both feel that Skyping before meeting in person made us feel much more comfortable with each other when we did meet than if we hadn’t Skyped.

“During my 15 months online, I encountered some suspected scammers, whom I reported to the site. But I also met and/ Page 32

or communicated with some really nice, caring men. My online dating experience was very positive. I will be moving to live with him in September. He often says, ‘life sings,’ and we feel very lucky to be singing a duet.”

The second woman, Annise, was married 25 years before becoming a widow six years ago. After many online dating attempts, she met a wonderful man who later died in a plane crash.

She said, “I jumped back on the Internet and have met and dated a few interesting and scary fellows, including a lawyer, who wore more jewelry than I, a convicted felon, a recovering alcoholic who is mixed up with lots of baggage, a man who prefers non-English speaking women because they are more subservient and many other characters.

Anyway, I’ve been trying!”

Despite the tragedies that Annise has endured, she continues to have a sense of humor and zest for life. One of her requirements of the men she is meeting: “He cannot be at war with his ex.”

Internet-wise, the only suggestion I have is she might try other dating websites to avoid meeting so many bizarre characters. Other than that, Annise’s energy, positive attitude, resiliency and determination to never give up looking for a mate are what it takes to find success in senior dating.

Seniors who use the Internet for dating should proceed slowly and must be prepared for any quirk that might surface.

But love can be found, as Cheryl experienced.

Ladera Sports Center Holds Grand Opening THE CAPISTRANO DISPATCH

T

he Ladera Sports Center, a state-ofthe-art, 48,752-square-foot multi-use athletic facility, celebrated its grand opening on Aug. 8.

The complex, which covers approximately four acres on Terrace Road near the intersection of Crown Valley Parkway and Antonio Parkway in Ladera Ranch, will provide local basketball and volleyball club teams with a large space to practice and hold games. The center houses eight basketball courts and eight volleyball courts.

The center was built by SmartShop Asset Management, which also has 15,000 square feet of office space onsite at the Ladera Sports Center.

The Ladera Sports Center touts several

high-tech features, including noise reduction systems, television monitors on each court, ceiling-mounted volleyball nets and offers the ability to live-stream games on the internet. The complex is also solar powered.

Several local clubs, including Team Nikos Basketball Academy, Ladera Ranch National Junior Basketball and San Clemente Volleyball Club will call the facility home.
