The team who brought you thousands of Euros worth of fundraising entertainment last year in aid of Canarian Breast Cancer Charity ACCMyG, (Asociación Canaria de Cáncer de Mama y Ginecológico), The Friends of Puerto Rico, are up and at it again.

Kim Waterhouse has this year been working with Philip Towler and appears to have roped several

more locals in to doing something amazing this summer for charity.

Last year regular readers will remember that The Friends of Puerto Rico headed up by Kim and her team raised well in excess of €7500 through provocatively performing in the burlesque style throughout the south of Gran Canaria. This time out Kim and pals have decided to encourage many more participants to do a

simple sponsored walk between Puerto Rico and the beach at Amadores. With a there-andback walking distance of about 5 miles absolutely anyone can take part and raise money to support sufferers of cancer and their families by getting as much sponsorship as possible and setting a personal challange to walk down one of the more beautiful Canarian costal paths

linking this busy tourist town with one of the most pristine beaches anywhere on the island. Expect a day filled with fun as various participants don their fancy dress garb, take their dogs with them along the route, some will run or jog while others will just stroll as an act of solidarity for those affected by this awful disease, July 28th at 7pm is when they'll begin. Puerto Rico Tragedy Residents of Puerto Rico, in the south of Gran Canaria, were shocked to hear about the awful occurrences a fortnight ago aboard the Supercat tourist excursion boat, one of, if not the largest of, the catamarans working in The Canary Islands.

The Canarian emergency service SUC (1-1-2) was called just after ten past eight on the evening Tuesday June 26th to the harbour area of Puerto Base with a report that two people had fallen into the bilges of the boat and were unable to get out, and that a third had also been injured. When emergency crews arrived they found that local sea captain Elena GT, who was in her forties, had fallen more than two meters directly into the bilges

having been suddenly overcome by septic tank fumes.

The incident happened as she raced to try and help shipmate Santiago who had immediately collapsed upon opening a hatch, causing him to go in to cardiac arrest.

Trying to help her fellow crew member Elena, it was reported, quickly too lost consciousness and was instantly killed after falling into the faecal waters which had precipitated a build up of highly concentrated and noxious fumes.

A third crew member, Angel, who was trying to help also suffered problems caused by inhalation of the dangerous gases, but was luckily able to escape the tragic fate of his ship mates.

breathing apparatus to retrieve the unconscious victims. SUC medical staff, together with the doctor and nurse at the Municipality of Mogán Health Centre conducted advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation to the man, managing to revive him. He was later admitted to the Hospital Insualr in critical condition.

An emergency tracheotomy was reportedly performed however his chances of a full recovery are currently not clear as it is feared that toxic fumes mixed with a prolonged lack of oxygen may well have produced lasting and perhaps irreversible effects. Only time will tell. The captain was pronounced dead at the scene, at which point the Guardia Civil took over responsibility for the investigation and the body of the deceased until the arrival of the Judicial Authority.

Firefighters spent the following morning extracting fumes and ventilating the boat, to allow investigative teams to gather evidence as to what caused the massive build up of poisonous gasses in the first place. A 300 metre exclusion zone was put in place to ensure public safety while these procedures were being carried out.

The bilge waste in the Super Cat had accumulated over several days, "enough so that there was a lethal concentration of hydrogen sulfide" said the chief guard of firefighters in Puerto Rico, Roberto Curbelo.

Many questions remain over the basic safety procedures of the company, which operates two other boats, especially as the torn bilge pipe suspected of being the cause had been a matter of common knowledge for several weeks among those who worked alongside the Supercat.

A harbour controller and close friend of Elenas said “I just cannot understand how this happened, Elena was always extremely professional and would never have willingly allowed just a basic matter to go undealt with, how on earth could this have happened?”

El Hierro goes 24 hours without an earthquake The island of El Hierro has recorded its first 24 hours without a single earthquake since the entire volcanic island started to shake again on June 24th. Since then there have been well over 1,500 earthquakes, man of more than 3 on the richter scale and some even reaching 4.2, as seen from the data of

the surveillance network for monitoring volcanic National Geographic Institute (IGN). It is expected that the magmatic activity at depths between 17 & 21 km below the surface will continue. Last year's siesmic activity continued for over 120 days causing much disruption to both the fishing and tourist industries.

Ten attended to at Las Canteras (Gran Canaria) for jellyfish stings A total of 10 swimmers were stung in just one day on the beach of Las Canteras in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, by jellyfish which have again returned en masse for the third time this year to the capital's main beach, as reported by City Hall in a press release.

Thousands and thousands of kilos a day were being removed by cleaning crews earlier this year, in what was called a freak occourance.

Jelly fish warnings have been erected and the local authorities are monitoring the situation closely. No jelly fish sightings have been reported on any other beaches in Gran Canaria, though swimmers are asked to be vigilent.

Prescription Charges

Changes to Spanish healthcare system means British pensioners contribute to prescription charges British pensioners living in Spain are now required to pay towards the cost of their prescriptions under changes to the public healthcare system introduced by the Spanish government.

One of the changes means that all state pensioners who are registered for healthcare in Spain as residents must now pay a percentage towards the cost of their medicines. The contribution for state pensioners has been set at 10% of the cost, with a cap of as low as eight euros per month depending on personal income.

How much a pensioner must pay depends on personal circumstances.

If you need more information you can contact your local health service

provider directly, who should be able to give you detailed information on the prescription charges. This system of ‘co-payment’ - paying a percentage of the total cost of medicines - is common among European countries and has been applied to those classed as ‘active’ in Spain i.e. those normally considered to be of working-age, for some time.

Under European Union regulations, the UK pays Spain an average annual cost to provide healthcare for its pensioners. This entitles UK pensioners who are resident in Spain and registered with an S1/E121 form to the same access to state healthcare as would be provided to a Spanish pensioner.

As a result, any healthcare changes that are applicable to Spanish state pensioners are equally applicable to all UK state pensioners, as well as those from other EU/EEA countries. These include any costs that someone may be charged, including those for prescriptions.

Crimestoppers Appeal Wanted

Crimestoppers seek help in Spain and Morocco to arrest suspected murderer

British national Anxiang Du is wanted in connection with the brutal murder of Mr and Mrs Ding and their two teenage daughters in their home in Northamptonshire in 2011. Today, in Madrid, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Davies from Northamptonshire Police called on citizens to assist Crimestoppers and Law Enforcement agencies in the search for Anxiang Du who is believed to be hiding in northern Morocco, having travelled there from southern Spain.

On Friday 29 April 2011, Jifeng ‘Jeff’ Ding, his wife Ge ‘Helen’ Chui and their two daughters Xing 18 years old and Alice 12 years old were brutally murdered in the home in Northampton. The suspected murderer Anxiang Du, 53 from Coventry was declared the only suspect soon after the discovery of the murders and has since evaded capture.

At a press conference in the British Embassy in Madrid, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Davies, leading the investigation, said: “We acknowledged at an early

stage that Anxiang Du had the opportunity to leave the UK soon after the murders, in the 3 to 4 day period before he was declared a suspect.

We now know that Anxiang Du left the UK soon after the homicides and travelled from Victoria bus station, London on a bus to Paris, Gallieni. After this he travelled through France into Spain (again probably by using public transport).

His final known journey was to Algeciras in Spain where he caught a ferry to Tangier, Morocco.

We believe that having made his way to Morocco, Mr Du may still be in the Tangier area. As a fugitive, he may take any opportunity to flee, using the routes or countries he is familiar with. We know that Du has previously spent time in Spain and is comfortable in the country.

We have been working with the police and law enforcement agencies in Spain and Morocco and they are in possession of the required extradition papers, should Mr Du be located and arrested. This should mean that he can then be brought back to the UK to stand trial.

We have also been working with and the Serious and Organised

Crime Agency (SOCA), Interpol and CPS International to ensure we have the support of the International Law Enforcement Agencies who are currently focused on locating Anxiang Du. I would like to thank Spanish and Moroccan law enforcement authorities for their support and collaboration in the operation to locate and detain Mr Du. We are now asking members of the public who are or will be using the ferries from Algeciras to Tangier during the Campaña del Paso de Estrecho to be aware of our manhunt, together with up to £25,000 reward available in the UK for information leading to his arrest and conviction.

We would ask members of the public to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 900 555 111 from Spain, so that we can bring justice to the families of the victims.

Alternatively people can also contact their local police if they have any information.”

On Sunday 25 March, three UK Police officers travelled to China with the aim of speaking with associates of the suspect for any information they may have in identifying people who could have assisted Du in his escape.

The trip to China also afforded the force the opportunity to meet the family of the victims, update them on the investigation and pass on the force’s deepest sympathies for their loss, in person. Recent developments in the case saw the arrest of four people last week, on suspicion of conspiracy to assist an offender. They were all released on bail pending further enquiries.

The system for co-payment is being managed by each individual autonomous community, so the process may differ slightly between regions. For those in the Valencia autonomous community, a freephone helpline has been set up which has English speakers available. The telephone number is 900 101 081.

Still retaining much of its essential character, this little gem of a town was once overlooked just for being populated with simple people who made their living either from service industries or the land and the sea. Consequently most of the tourist develpment happened elsewhere. This meant that the town was very much left to grow on its own terms, alongside a large influx of both English and Nordic foreigners in recent years who also wished to live away from the tourist centres and all inclusive resorts which, althuogh the mainstay of the tourism industry here, do not actually present an accurate picture of life by the sea on a small Atlantic island off the coast of Africa. It is now precisely the honest simplicity of the town's residents, and the various shopping areas which have remained unsullied by the developers hand, that make this town one of the most desirable to visit anywhere in The Canary Islands.

Arguineguín - (From the prehispanic native Guanche Canario word for "quiet water”) is one of the most populated towns, and one of the last fishermen communities, along the south coast of Gran Canaria. A typical Canarian fishing village, it is home to many locals rather than being a tourist resort.

Part of the municipality of Mogán it is located on the southwest of the island, at what is near enough, furthest point from the capital city Las Palmas in the north east.

There are several bars and restaurants, the latter specialising in fresh fish caught the same day.

Tuesday is market day (certainly one of the largest on the island).

Arguineguín features a beach and a port. Tourism is not as popular in Arguineguin as in the larger places like Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles. Holiday hotels, however, can be found in Arguineguín; Marino I, Dorado Beach, Club Puerto Atlantico, Sunwing Resort Arguineguin, Green Beach Hotel and Dunas La Canaria to mention some of the larger ones; and it is well worth a visit if you wish to escape the preplanned, all inclusive tourist resorts found elsewhere in the south.

The Nordic community have especially taken this little fishing village to their hearts, and the Norwegian population is quite large in the winter time. This might also be due to the Norwegian school, Norwegian church and a health centre which are located

in or just outside of Arguineguín.

There is also a Nordic doctor's office - located at the marketplace in Arguineguin - and a big timeshare holiday resort named Anfi del Mar, located just outside of Arguineguín, which was founded by a Norwegian business man.

The primary population however is made up of Canarians along with a burgeoning community of English speakers, taking an ever more active role in the town. The town´s heritage is maintained as a functioning fishing community, along with Puerto de Mogán, it is one of the last on the otherwise touristed south coast. Both towns vigorously celebrate the Fiesta del Carmen, patron saint of fishermen and sea farers, during mid July.

The harbour hosts a ferry service to Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria and Puerto de Mogán whilst another popular way to reach the town from Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria is by trekking over the mountain between the two towns.

The town also lies on several public bus routes offering convenient service to other towns on the island. The primary route being the No-1 bus (check our middle pages for times) Arguineguín is served by the GC1 motorway with a nearby interchange and the old coastal national road GC500. It is only about 10 minutes away from Maspalomas and the other tourist areas, like Playa Del Ingles and Puerto Rico.

Gran Canarian Son The streets of spain, along with the beaches of Gran Canaria, were packed for the final game of the Eurocup 2012, from which the land of bulls blood and sunshine were to be crowned the undisputed dominators of all things football, once again.

After cringing our way through England’s 0-0 draw with Italy, it was with near relief that the Italians won on penalties, as England would not have faired well against ze Germans even if by some majesty we had got past them, I dread to think of the humiliation we would have suffered against an historic Spain.

The final on the 1st of July started comfortably enough for both teams, Spain, the old masters of the passing and running game, and Italy, the recently converted pretender, in the first ten minutes either side could have gone in front with Casillas(Spain) and Buffon(Italy) both getting early action. In the 14th minute David Silva headed home a Cesc Fabregas cross, giving España a 1-0 lead.

In the 40th minute Jordi Alba kept his head to make it 2-0, in the second half with Spain already comfortable, newly-on sub Torres made it 3-0 in the 84th before unselfishly passing the ball on to Juan Mata to make it 4-0 in the 88th minute.

in mainland Spain, or in the Canary islands, who were not celebrating Spain’s win in the 2012 Euro cup, undoubtedly amongst those celebrating the hardest was the little Gran Canarian fishing village of Arguinegín in the municipality of Mogan, one of whose sons had an extensive role in the Spanish victory.

David Josue Jimenez Silva, better known as David Silva was born in Arguinegín on the 8th of January 1986, and though his parents have travelled to live near the various world class football clubs at which David has been playing (Valencia, Manchester) his Grandmother, cousins and other family still live and work there.

David signed professional terms with Valencia when they saw him play in a junior tournament, after initially being spotted by Vicente Miranda and being talked into going to Real Madrid for a trial, Madrid did not sign David saying that he was too small, a decision they would later come to undoubtedly regret.

During his time at Valencia he enjoyed spells with both Eiber and Celta, on loan. When Valencia decided to sell this extraordinary player, Real Madrid again showed interest which seemed to peter out with the arrival of Mourinho as manager.

With Chelsea appearing eager, David eventually signed up to Manchester City for €33 million, where he has been, again and again, the centre of operations.

Fiesta de Virgen del Carmen Saturday 14th July

The islanders have been celebrating the Fiesta del Carmen this year in the usual raucous manner. This is one of the few traditional festivals to reach the touristed south of Gran Canaria (as well as many other fishing villages throughout the Canaries.

Here on this island much centres around the well known fishing village of Arguiineguin where many of the foreign residents get very much into the spirit and enjoy a week of partying, which includes old style celebrations mixed with water fights and the highlight, a huge regatta where a statue of The 'Virgin del Carmen'is carried out to sea by boat fol-

lowed by a flotilla of pleasure cruisers and other smaller vessels to ask for protection, safety and prosperity for the fishermen of the municipality.

Having started sedately on July 6th, the Saturday Romeria (pilgrimage) was well attended with hundreds upon hundreds of people having a fine old time in traditional Canary Islands costume.

Followed on the Sunday by a huge foam party event designed to encourage a lot of the local youth to get into the party spirit themselves.

However what for many is the main events happen all around Arguineguin this weekend with Bajeda de la

Rama (talking down of the branches) on Saturday 14th and the water parade where everybody can expect to get soaking wet and have an amazing day. Thousands come to this event which starts around 7pm from the Plaza de Pino Seco (check the TARA ad at the back for a map). DJs, bands and a party atmosphere continue well in to the early hours, with a great opportunity to dine outdoors on a feast of fresh fish and other traditional Canarian foods from the Chiringuitos.

This is then followed by the rather unique and special maritime parade on Sunday, where anyone who is anyone

will be on a boat, watched by thousands lining the sea front, do not miss either of these events as they are rather memorable, as well as being a whole caboodle of fun even if you are simply a spectator.

Monday 16th July is the last day of celebration, and the official reason for all the partying previous to it with the Eucharist and a party for the older members of the community, rounded off by a cocktail party thrown by the association of bartenders, so expect some very tasty and more than likely very boozy drinks to be passed around to one and all.

Live and Let Live

One of the many things that I love about our island in the sun is the ‘live and let live’ attitude of most of its people. No, I don’t mean the thousands of tourists, but the true Canarian people, those who were born here and have stayed in this little corner of Paradise. As long as it is broadly legal and does not interfere with anyone else, in the main, anything goes. For many of its present day expat population, with its heady mix of faith, culture, colour and sexuality, it takes time to get used to not being judged.

Maybe this stems from the time, it is said, when Spain’s General Franco, intolerant of gay men in the military, would ship them off to Gran Canaria, which became a kind of penal colony for homosexuals. Whether there is real historical substance to this claim or whether it is an urban myth, I do not know for sure, but it sounds reasonable enough to me, although I am quite sure that the Yumbo Centre wasn’t there then!

For me, one of the real unsung heroes of the Second World War was the codebreaker, Alan Turing. 23 June 2012 saw the centenary of his birth and it was thanks to this mathematical genius that the war against Nazi Germany ended two years earlier than it otherwise would have done.

He managed to intercept and crack ingenious coded messages that gave detailed information to the Allies about the activities of German

U-boats. However, there was only one problem with Alan Turing - he was gay.

Alan’s reward for his pivotal role in cracking intercepted messages was quickly forgotten when, in 1952, he was prosecuted for ‘indecency’ after admitting a sexual relationship with a man. As an ‘alternative’ to imprisonment, this unsung war hero was given ‘chemical castration’ - a newly devised treatment for such ‘disorders’ at the time.

In 1954, at the age of 41, he killed himself by eating a poisoned apple, which was apparently inspired by the story of Snow White.

Needless to say, as with much of history, this version of events is currently being challenged and massaged for the financial gains for another film, documentary or book. However, I rather like the original version of the tragedy, agreed by the coroner at the time; it is just so dramatic!

Or was this the end of Alan Turing? This amazing man is also credited with creating the beginnings of computer

technology and artificial intelligence, which led to the development of one of the first recognisable modern computers. Alan Turing's brilliance and personal life came to the attention of present day computer programmer, Dr. John Graham-Cumming, who began a petition asking for a posthumous apology from the government. Many thousands of people signed it and a previous UK Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, finally apologised for how Alan Turing was treated in the 1950s. Whether it was through political motivation or genuine compassion for this brilliant man, and I like to think it is the latter, he said that "on behalf of the British government, and all those who live freely thanks to Alan's work, I am very proud to say: we're sorry, you deserved so much better.�

My thoughts also go out to the many thousands of gay men and woman who have been persecuted over the years - just for being themselves.

All this serious stuff brings me back home to Gran Canaria. Spain’s General Franco certainly had his faults, but I cannot help thinking that being shipped off to a life in the sun in the penal colony of Gran Canaria, just for being gay, was a far preferable alternative to ‘chemical castration’!

Parablics, Air Con and a blocked view I purchased a house that was empty for nearly 30 years. In the time before I owned the property one neighbour attached a satellite dish to one of my outside walls and another an air-condition unit to

another wall. They also built a second level to their house completely blocking a window to my house.

So when you open the wooden shutters to my window there is a cement block wall.

Is this legal and can I make them take the items off my property and how? As for the bricked up window, is their second floor an illegal build and what can I do about it? Many thanks for your time and help.

With regards to the parabolic antenna and the air conditioning that has been installed by your neighbours on the walls of your property, please note that these items should have been placed by your neighbours on their own properties and not on yours, since they have no right to place anything (without your consent) on your walls.

We recommend that you send your neighbours notice that you plan to obtain a court injunction to have the antenna and the air conditioning removed from your property and, in the assumption that this via extra judicial does not work, we recommend that you submit a demand to the court to compel them to remove those elements from the walls of your property.

With regards to the construction of a second floor that prevents you from enjoying light and views, we recommend you to go to the City Hall in order to find out about the legality of the work carried out, and discern whether appropriate permissions were granted.

You may also apply to the City Hall to carry out an inspection on the work completed by your neighbour and to issue a report as to its status, in the event that the work is illegal, you will be able to apply for its demolition.

Thousands of inheritances are lost every year If a relative dies and their heirs are unaware, does the inheritance get lost?

Yes, it can. If legal heirs are unaware of a relative's passing, or indeed that they are named as heirs, then the deceased’s estate can be lost.

This can often happen due to a lack of contact with an heir prior to death.

It is estimated that each year the Spanish state keeps between 20,000 and 50,000 million Euros in cash and properties corresponding to inheritances not having been awarded to rightful heirs because they were unaware of their relatives having died leaving an estate. If the status of a relative is unknown, but there may be reason to believe that they are deceased, it should then be possible, upon proof of kinship, to request a certificate of wills and to discover if that relative has died and has left a will and before which notary. From this data, we can go to a notary or court to claim the inheritance.

Euroland sovereign debt

The ongoing shambles of Euroland sovereign debt and politics has festered for another month with no fresh sign of resolution.

In Britain David Cameron and his cabinet colleagues have taken it in turn to make embarrassing revelations to the Levy inquiry, unsupported by their LibDem coalition colleagues. Little kudos has accrued to either side, as reflected by the lack of change in sterling's value against the euro. The last month has seen the pound wander back and forth across a two-and-ahalf-cent range that has led nowhere. The euro is very slightly weaker than it was before the first abortive Greek election six weeks ago but the difference is minimal.

At the beginning of June the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee decided to keep the Bank Rate steady at 0.5% and to refrain from any new quantitative easing - "printing money" as the tabloids would put it. The minutes of the meeting, published a fortnight later, showed how close a call it was. Four of the nine members - including the governor himself - wanted to increase the asset purchase programme beyond the 325 billion of government bonds already in the scheme.

Investors were surprised by the narrow majority and concluded that it might be no more than a couple of weeks before the Bank rolls out the next phase of its monetary stimulus. That anticipation was reinforced by data the previous day showing that UK inflation had fallen back into its 1%3% target range in May. It was the first time in two and a half years that consumer prices index inflation had been below 3%. It is possible that the Bank of England governor had such numbers in mind the previous week when he announced, together with the chancellor, a new scheme to feed low-cost money to the country's banks, conditional on them making cheap loans to individuals and small businesses.

The central banks of Spain and Italy are green with envy at the low borrowing costs enjoyed by Germany and Britain. For its five-year loans Britain pays roughly 0.7% and Germany pays 0.6%. Investors charge Italy 5.5% and Spain 6.4% for the same privilege. Proportionally the difference is enormous and it exists because lenders fear Spain and Italy could go the same way as Greece, defaulting on their obligations and leaving private sector investors in the lurch.

The EU is trying to dispel this fear and, by doing so, to make it more affordable for Spain and Italy to borrow the money they need. But so far they are fighting a losing battle. Brussels' approval of a €100bn bailout for Spain in mid-June simply drew attention to the country's troubled banks and raised the question of how much more support it might need further down the line.

In Greece the New Democracy party has managed to form a three-way coalition after the second general election in six weeks but the new government is almost certain to approach Brussels - and Berlin - with a request for an easing of the

onerous austerity imposed as a condition of its financial bailout.

At the G20 conference in Mexico there were heartening rumours that Germany would subscribe to a €600bn (or €750bn, depending on the source) support fund for Spanish and Italian government bonds. Much as investors liked the concept, they have yet to hear any confirmation from the most important player; Chancellor Merkel.

So investors don't like the eternal disarray in Euroland and the recycling of old pledges and reassurances. Equally importantly, they are nervous about the prospect of a further dilution of Britain's currency and the close relationship of the UK and Euroland economies.

Paradoxically, the failed Greek election in early May marked the end of sterling's ten-month rally. Since then it has made zero forward progress against the euro. Without some new and major development - on either side - the impasse is likely to continue.

(Maria José, Las Palmas) Dear María José, That is one of the best options nowadays, a combination of English and the child’s favourite sport, this makes the child more willing to comply to the study conditions required by the English classes as she is having a great time improving her basketball skills.

My son is only 10 and he really likes playing football, I want to improve his spoken English level in the summer but I am not sure yet about sending him to England, is there no option nearer ?

(Himar, Firgas) Dear Himar, There are currently summer camps running in mainland Spain which are very successful they combine the learning of English or French with professional football training sessions run by former football stars. They obviously don’t offer such a high English level as a UK based programme but they are a good start for the younger members of the family.

My son is 16 and he is crazy for surf, he spends as much free time as he can on the beach, is there any course in the UK which combines English with Surf?

(Frank, Telde) Dear Frank, Yes there is this possibility in Ireland, students can improve their English skills going to class in the morning and they can spend the afternoon taking surf lessons on the beautiful Irish beaches, this is a great way for surf-crazy teens to spend their summer and really improve their English.

Learn to Live with your Child Many parents find it hard to discipline kids from toddlers to teens and they also find a very hard task to encourage their children to feel positive about themselves, these skills are important and a good communication is essential.

Parents should set themselves the goal to teach their kids to develop self-discipline, many parents opt for a quick and easy response such as yelling, screaming and spanking these prove very ineffective with children and especially with teens. Once parents learn to discipline in a more effective way a positive relationship is established.

Parent-Child relationship guidelines The following guidelines are essential for a good relationship and a happy home : •Set aside some time on a regular basis to do something fun with your child or teen (homework time doesn’t count).

•Don’t disagree with your partner about discipline in front of the children.

•Never threaten or give orders, requests or commands if you are not capable to enforce them.

•You must be consistent with your rewards and punishments.

•Agree with your partner and your children on what type of behaviour is desirable and

not desirable; also agree with them on how you will respond to undesirable behaviour.

•You must make clear what undesirable behaviour is and make a list of it, “Your room is a mess” is not clear enough as this will end up with a confrontation between you regarding what each of you consider a mess, set clear rules •Dirty clothes must be put in the basket •Nothing must be left on the floor •Dirty plates must be returned to the kitchen •Bed must be made every morning •The basic rule a parent must always follow is to avoid defending yourself, you rule your house and you don’t have to defend your decisions or punishments your kids will constantly attack your superior position (all kids do) just restate your position and avoid giving defensive reasonings.

•When new rules are set down don’t expect immediate response, it will be a slow process; set your goals on gradual changes in behaviour.

•There is one very important rule that parents must obey, if one of you is disciplining your child and the other enters the room that last person should not step in on the argument in process, as you don’t really know how the situation has

arisen and the child will try and use your intromission on his/her benefit.

•Reward desirable behaviour as much as possible by using verbal praise, touch or a tangible reward (staying up later, going somewhere special, going to his/her favourite restaurant) avoid making the reward a constant economical gift (toys, junk food, money) as this will cause problems in the long run.

•Try and distribute your responsibility of discipline as equally as work permits it as this avoids one of the parents becoming the good one and the other the bad one who always does the punishing.

The Three Keys to effective parenting.

1. BE FIRM When you set down the rules make sure you also set down the consequences for breaking the rules, you must be constant with these consequences or they will lose any usefulness.

2. BE FAIR The punishment should fit the crime, you need to set a number of punishments in order of importance and then use them accordingly, be as fair as possible with this and set down the list of crimes – punishments avoid changing these as you will usually be extremely annoyed when the crime has been committed and you will probably overpunish, this has to be avoided and of course you can’t go back on your punishments so leave them established beforehand and stick to them no matter what.

3. BE FRIENDLY When

off use a friendly but firm communication style avoid shouting and yelling they won’t take you anywhere you need to sit down with them inform them of what has happened and why the rule has been broken and then simply inform them of the agreed upon consequences, remind them how they should do things to avoid future consequences. After a punishment try and look out for them being good and praise them for the appropriate behaviour remember that once they have been punished for their crime they don’t have to be persecuted to find every negative thing they do.

There are over 700 different species of philodendron, this is a tropical plant which Is usually found in tropical rainforests and is a very popular indoor plant in the Canary Isles.

The risk of death in an adult human is extremely low although it is quite unhealthy to consume parts of this plant. Large quantities have to generally be consumed for symptoms to appear although with some pets it is known to be deadly. Fatal poisoning is extremely rare but some cases of small children resulting in hospitalization and death have been recorded.

Cats are quite prone to eating plants when they feel unwell and many cases of cat death have been recorded due to eating philodendron. It tends to be very poisonous for rodents; hamsters, rats and guinea pigs should be kept well away from them.

The symptoms are: increased salivation, burning of the mouth, tongue swelling, stomatitis, dysphagia, inability to speak, dermatitis due to contact and various other symptoms.

Getting possessive

Little words like my, your, his/her, its, our and their are known as possessive adjectives. Like all ‘describers’ in Spanish, they need to agree in terms of masculine/feminine, and singular or plural with the thing or person they´re describing. While words ending in ‘o’ are usually masculine, and those with ‘a’ are feminine, some adjectives end in a different letter and are neutral (e.g. grande or excelente).

However, they can still go

It´s easier to learn these words in the order given above, especially as numbers two and three rhyme (mi, tu, su). Seeing examples helps makes things clearer, too: Es MI mechero (it´s my lighter) but son MIS cigarillos (they´re my cigarettes). ¿Es tu bolso? (is it your bag?) but tus niños son divertidos (your children are fun).

Juan es simpático pero su novia es pesada (Juan is nice but his girlfriend is a pain – lit: ‘heavy’). ¿Conoces a María? Sus padres son de Alemania (Do you know Maria? Her parents are from Germany).

Me encanta el restaurante. Su comida es excelente. (I love the restaurant. Its food is excellent).

If you can learn one short phrase off-by-heart, you can use it to extract handy words such as ‘mi, tu and su’. For example: mi casa es tu casa (or mi casa es su casa if you´re being more formal). Literally: my house is your house.

‘Su’ is great as it means so many different things: his/her/its/ their and your (of the more formal you: usted or ustedes).

Examples usually make things clearer: Es tu error, no el mío (it´s your mistake – not mine; ‘el mío’ because we´re talking about EL error ) No es tu copa – es la mia (it´s not your drink – it´s mine; ‘la mía’ because LA COPA is feminine) No es mi culpa – es la tuya (it´s not my fault – it´s yours) El piso es mío – lo compré en 2011 (the flat is mine – I bought it in 2011).

Las cervezas son tuyas, ¿no? (the beers are yours, right?) ¿Qué tal las gambas? Las mías están ricas. (How are the prawns? Mine are delicious).

Este no es el coche de Jane – el suyo es rojo. (This isn´t Jane’s car – hers is red; even though Jane is a woman, we say ‘el suyo’ because we´re talking about el coche – the car). “¿Qué tal las clases? Las nuestras son muy difíciles.” (How are the classes going? Ours are very difficult).

Don´t worry if these make your head spin, because you can usually avoid using words like ‘ours’ and ‘theirs’ by simply repeating the object: no es tu copa – es MI copa. However, it´s nice to be able to say things like: ‘a friend of mine’: un amigo mío OR una amiga mía, if it´s a woman. For example: Pedro es mi amigo (Peter is my friend) or Pedro es amigo mío (he’s a friend of mine).

Saying of the week: In honour of the Champions League I´ll leave you with a favourite Canarian saying: Le falta un jugador (he/she´s missing a player).

In English we might say: he’s not the full ticket.

The Search for Paradise

Paradise In the last edition we introduced you to Paul and Rose-Marie who, through a literally Herculean effort, have dared the impossible with total dedication; working side-by-side, seed-byseed, day-by-day, yearby-year to resurrect the Garden of Hesperides (in Greek mythology Hera’s Paradise On Earth) – right here on Gran Canaria which, some arguably believe to be precisely the spot where the original garden must have flourished.

The Canary News knows the miracle of this remarkable garden well, and has the great fortune of having visited its serene sumptuousness on many occasions. Recently, Paul and Rose-Marie sat and chatted with our Chief Community Gardner, Brian Paradise.

When we arrived, the good doctor was pouring over his memoirs – thousands of hand written pages covering a lifetime’s search for knowledge of nature and the application of his encounters. Paul has focused all the years of his studies at university, studies in the field, studies in his occupation as a curator, and studies of design and development to the Garden of Hesperides and the realisation of his dream: To bring The Garden back to life.

Gran Canaria qualifies uniquely as the place to nurture such a project due to its unequalled weather, clean and abundant waters, and its volcanic base providing rich, fertile soil. For all these reasons

and more, Paul believes this island combines the necessary ingredients to be truly called Paradise.

He has brought his unique knowledge and research to bear on these fundamentals.

Then combined it with perhaps the most important ingredient: WORK – hundreds of thousands of hours have been dedicated to this great work.

Unrelenting and constant, hard work.

Paul says, “Knowledge applied with labour was a significant additive to the recipe for the Garden of Hesperides. The conundrum of cultivation is much more than plant, water, enjoy. On the surface (of the problem and the land), there are fierce enemies.

Never ending days of sun may be glorious to the holiday maker, but to most vegetation, the sun singes and burns delicate life struggling to take hold and flourish in this landscape.

Insects and airborne bacteria, moulds, and plant viruses can wipe out a young life overnight. Birds and beasts (particularly rabbits) need to be thwarted. Our aim here is to grow many species that have not yet adapted to this climate. Below the problem (underground) is that we battle in the darkness: plants not native to this island sometimes vie for root space, clinging on for survival to the topsoil. It is not unlike putting beings from alien planets together and seeing how it goes. It can be brutal. It can be deadly.”

Rose-Marie expresses this stark reality as the greatest

pain in the creation of their garden: death, death and more death. “I struggle with all my heart and might and knowledge to save these precious beings that have been uprooted from various lands around the globe,” Rose-Marie explains. “Not all of them can flourish. In the end, hard work and nature’s abilities to adapt are often the only deciding factors for which will survive. But many, too many, succumb and, for me, each loss is personal and painful.”

Paul has forged against adversity armed with his beloved books – scouring them for remedies with which to defeat debilitating bacterium and blight – seeking solutions that could save a piece of the garden.

Sometimes needing to replant many times away from a potentially offending plant, or in better shade, or with various food supplements, or needing to concoct a natural additive for the compost, adjusting the time and amount of water, or whatever it took.

Of course, Paul has been light years ahead of the agronomy curve, that is the art of selectively growing plants and crops which better nourish and promote each other; never employing the evil “cides” (insecticides, pesticide, or herbicides) still utilised in so many private gardens and industrial farms today.

The same goes for chemical fertiliser: not an ounce in the Garden of Hesperides. Nature is as nature does. ‘Natural’ is the garden's best tool.

Paul and Rose-Marie began a society to embrace the Garden of Hesperides.

Members received monthly newsletters chocked full of the news of the garden: agricultural additions sourced from around the world; the stories of the trials and the tribulations, problems and solutions, a few failures and many more successes.

Paul and Rose-Marie added their own remarkable etchings, paintings, photographs, charts and drawings to illustrate the wonders that were unfolding and flowering in the garden.

Many members pilgrimaged to them for a new kind of vacation. Visitors would spend the days WORKING the garden, then relax and be nourished by delicacies grown and prepared by Rose-Marie. Truly magic – the most delicious mangoes, avocados, oranges, cactus pears – beyond imagination. Jams and jellies, teas and coffee,

desserts to die for, avocado bread, mango chutney – the gifts from the garden always beyond compare.

In fact, it has been this sharing of the garden that has brought the greatest feedback, sense of worth and moments of real contentment and pride to Paul and Rose-Marie.

Did the dream become a reality? A Garden of Hesperides risen again from the dust? With more than 5,000 plants, flowers, and trees grown and thriving, the beauty here is opulent and like nowhere else on earth. Each stroll uncovers more mystery, and further awe at the scope of this unique work.

San Fernando's first farming community formed just 70 years ago, when three English men decided to set up a tomato plantation, previously it was arid unused land own by the Count of Vega Grande.

The farming boom was soon superceded.

By 1962 world tourism was on the rise and so the count commissioned the first hotels to be built, leading to rapid growth over a very short period of time. This year is the

50th Anniversary of the Costa Maspalomas and tourism really taking off on this island, leaving agriculture up on the mountains where it had always traditionally been in favour of the tourist sector here in the south. Naturally, therefore this has grown in the area with largest numbers of forign residents and English Speakers accounting for 37% of the readership of this newspaper. The world famous dunes are here.

The 01 bus is a cost effective way to get half way round the island from the very picturesque Puerto de Mogan, in the South West, right the way up to Las Palmas, the capital city, in the North East. There are plenty of other buses going to pretty much every town, to find out which ones you need to take check out the Global Bus website (English/Spanish/ German) which has a handy route finder and timetables .

Friday 13 July 2012, MOGAN MARKET 08:00 - 14:00 Every Friday in Puerto de Mogan (not the village) there’s a very, very touristy market. Very little here is aimed at local residents so it’s one of the least interesting markets on the island but set in one of the nicest locations.

Mogan is the little venice of the south, canal waterways, streets lined with bouganvilla, lots of fishing boats bringing in the catch for the local restaurants.

The driver there will be a bit hectic along mountain top roads until the motorway extension opens at the end of 2012. There’s a frequent bus service and you can even catch a water-taxi from Puerto Rico.

Something for everyone as a lot of locals go here for local produce but there’s also a lot of interesting stalls for tourists (loads of stalls specializing in Aloe Vera products for some reason here) and again, as it’s in the south you can haggle as many stall owners will try and get as much as they can in the beginning.

Holiday World is a ten minute walk away and there’s a bus stop there and Faro (lighthouse) stop is about 4 euros in a taxi so you can combine a day on the beach/dunes) with the market.

08:00 - 14:00 Car-boot-sale-market in the car park at Faro 2 shopping centre, one of the first second hand markets here on the island and now a flourishing weekly event with many, many bargains to be found.

TEROR MARKET - EVERY SUNDAY 08:00 - 15:00 Artesian market selling a lot of traditional produce, stalls selling clothes, household items, the usual touristy stalls but probably one of the better markets on the island if you want to see something local.

Teror the town itself is a spectacular place to visit, especially the church on a Sunday with its services.

You can catch an excursion up there which spends half the morning here and the other half in the nearby San Mateo market. Driving of course is an option (motorway about 85% of the way with the last part windy roads) otherwise catch the express bus service to San Telmo station in Las Palmas and change for the Teror service there.

The products you use are very important, as your make-up will be disturbed throughout the day.

Apply two coats of waterproof mascara. Let each coat dry for a few seconds before applying the next layer. Leave your lower lashes clean if you think you might do some crying.

Unless you are extremely good at applying your own make-up, my advice is to hire a professional make-up artist. Also, have a trail before hand to ensure you achieve the look you want.

Having a trail also gives you the opportunity to test your makeup's staying power. Leave it on for the whole day and evening and see how you look at the end of it. It’ll give you an idea of how many touch ups you might need.

If you’re opting to do your own make-up, why not head down to a professional make-up stands such as Mac, Armani or Bobbi Brown. For a fee, which is redeemable against their products, they will help and show you how to get that perfect wedding look. You can then redeem the cost against the products you will use on the actual day.

Foundation It’s a good idea to apply some moisturizer about twenty minutes before you start to apply your makeup. This will help to reduce slide.

Lips

Use an oil based concealer under your eyes if you’re anticipating on crying a little.

Be sure to wear the correct shade of foundation. Apply it to your jaw line and look at it in direct daylight. The colour should blend in your skin and look like it has disappeared.

For extra staying power, complete your foundation with face powder.

Cheeks A powder based blush will last longer than cream based one.

Use a colour that looks good with your hair and eye colour and use lip liner in the same colour family.

Use a matte or longwearing lipstick because you don't want to be constantly reapplying your makeup during the day.

Layer lip products, such as primer, balm, or lacquer to help to make the lipstick stay on.

Apply your lipstick with a lip brush. First one layer of lipstick, blot with a tissue, and apply the second layer.

Remember that your make-up is part of bringing together the overall look. It’s important to invest time and money into getting it right.

Perry Allan Tramp PAT is cool - as cool as Tramp in Lady & the Tramp! Everyone that sees PAT wants to name him. If you count the first two times he was abandoned, that equals 5 names to date. At 18 months, this happy-go-lucky terrier mix has no idea how hard life has been for him. He had a home that got pregnant with a human baby on the way. He was given away to another "great" home! Bam, he was dropped-kicked to the streets when the "great" home found a cute, fluffy puppy. PAT found his way to a remote beach between The Cement Factory and Pasito Blanco. He made great friends with all resident beach goers. Allan, a bag packer from Belgian, understood at once a permanent, safe, secure, loving home was needed. TARA rescued PAT and called him Allan - in honour of the rescuer. The first TARA Foster mother didn't like the name she wanted Perry. He looks like the cartoon character Tramp - to now he is P erry A llan T ramp and he needs you so very badly. You simply could not ask for a greater guy as a best friend for life.

Bobby This oh, so sad tail was dumped by his beloved human. No explanations. Pondering why oh why doesn't help anybody.

Bobby is simply adorable and very well-behaved. This marvelous mixed terrier is 3 years old and just cannot figure out why he was abandoned. Bobby is neutered, chipped, and immunised. THE GOOD SHEPHERD my Mum makes me say the 23rd Psalm with my prayers 'cos she worries about me so much’ answered Timmy. “In one part I have to say ' Shirley Goodnest and Marcy shall follow me all the days of my life’ ... so I guess that’s them and I'll just have to get used to it!”

The funeral I mentioned earlier was that of my own dear Uncle David who died aged 94.He was a kindly devout man and a sheep farmer in the Welsh mountains all his life. As children we used to love to visit - especially at lambing time. Accompanying Uncle David as he walked the fields to tend his precious flock, we were in heaven when he let us bottle- feed the baby ‘orphan’ lambs, watching their little white tails tremble ecstatically.

We never tired of his ‘woolly’ tales - stories of naughty Collies, hungry foxes, shearing- times, lost sheep and the ram caught in the thorny thicket. The sheep knew the voice of their provider and protector and Uncle really knew and loved his flock.

As a wonderful reminder of those good times my favourite uncle left me the oft admired painting which hung above the man-

telpiece in his farmhouse kitchen. It portrays a man rescuing a little lamb from a rocky ledge whilst lovingly carrying another lamb on his shoulders. It is simply entitled ‘The Good Shepherd’.

The picture has a fascinating ‘can’t take your eyes off it’ appeal as the shepherd’s own gently smiling eyes seem to follow you wherever you move in the room.

Addressed to me, hand written and attached to the painting was my Uncle David’s delightful interpretation of Psalm 23.

‘The Lord is my Shepherd ~That's relationship! I shall not be in want ~That's supply!

Wanting to give her son some independence as he had asked, yet concerned if he would be safe, a young mother asked a neighbour – who loved to walk - if she would kindly follow Timmy to school in the mornings, keeping her distance.

For a week the woman and her little girl followed behind Timmy and his friend Ben. As the two boys chatted, spotting the same woman walking behind them every day, Ben asked Timmy, 'Have you noticed that lady and small girl following us to school? Who are they?'

Timmy nonchalantly replied, “It’s only Shirley Goodnest and her daughter Marcy.”

‘Why are they following us?’ asked Ben. “Well, every night

In 2012 I have attended several weddings and a funeral...all the services included the 23rd Psalm; (written by King David - former shepherd boy - over 3000 years ago). Discussing its perennial popularity one minister shared this moving story...

‘A famous actor renowned for his one-man shows always ended his ‘performance’ with a reading of Psalm 23. Each night he began his dramatic recitation "The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want” the crowd listened spellbound as his warm resonant voice filled the auditorium. Thunderous applause and a standing ovation followed in appreciation of his dramatic rendition of the beautiful poem.

One night, just before the actor began his customary finale, a young man from the audience spoke up. "Sir, do you mind if tonight I recite Psalm 23?" The actor was quite taken aback, but he beckoned the young man to take centre stage and recite the Psalm, thinking that this unskilled youth would be no match for his own artistry and talent.

In a gentle voice, the young man began to recite the Psalm.

When he finished, there was no applause. There was no standing ovation. Instead there was a moment’s hush, followed by the sound of weeping. The audience was so moved by the young man's delivery that people could only respond with tears.

Amazed, the actor said to the youth, "I have been ‘performing’ Psalm 23 for years. I have a lifetime of experience and training, but I have never been able to move an audience as you have done tonight. What is your secret?”

The young man quietly responded “Well sir, you know the Psalm...I know the Shepherd”

though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death ~That's testing! I will fear no evil ~ That's protection! For you are with me~ That's faithfulness! Your rod and staff, they comfort me~ That's discipline! You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies ~ That's hope! You anoint my head with oil~ That's consecration! My cup overflows ~ That's abundance!

Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life ~ That's blessing! And I will dwell in the house of the Lord ~ That's security! Forever ~ That's eternity!’

See you in heaven Uncle David... until then ...may the blessing of Shirley Goodnest and Marcy follow us all the days of our lives!

Number 6: Learn to swim a mile

Learn to Swim a mile in 6 weeks!

Perhaps not the first workout you would think about for toning and slimming down but to put it simply, no other exercise burns calories, boosts your metabolism and firms up EVERY single muscle in the body – WITHOUT putting stress on your joints! Young or old, fit or not, everyone will see feel and see the benefits of swimming in a very short space of time.

EM - på stranden

Den 23 juni, ställdes Spanien mot Frankrike i kvartsfinalen i fotbolls-EM. Som vanligt vid de flesta ligamatcherna, är det stor uppslutning runt alla barer med tv-sändningar men vid detta fina mästerkap hade kommunen dessutom sponsrat en storbildsskärm nere vid stranden i Playa del Inglés.

Tidigt valde de tillströmmande åskådarna sina platser. En del, iförda endast badkläder, satte sig resolut ner i den varma

sanden. Andra bredde ut badlakan, och förberedde för några timmars fest genom att tömma korgar och kassar på deras innehåll av mat och dryck, stämningsljus, flaggor, banderoller och tutor.

Ytterligare ett fåtal hade släpat ner hela vilstolar.

Långsamt och bitvis fylldes stranden ända ner till vågkanten, av personer i alla åldrar. Sällskapen blev allt större och det vinkades glatt på alla håll för att uppmärksamma senkomna vänner till en bra plats. En bar fläck sand, på ett fåtal kvadratdecimeter visade sig kunna rymma minst fem personer till, efter att väskor och kläder ställts lite annorlunda och något makande och vänligt knuffande på omgivningen som satt på sin egen

Bokrecension Peruanskt Pepparträd och Brasilianskt Pepparträd

Ett litet ständigt grönt träd med nedhängande grenar. Det förekommer i trädgårdar i parker och kan bli upp till 15 meter högt. Blommorna är små och gulvita, bladen sitter parvis 15-25 stycken. Frukterna är små och blanka, först grönvita men när de mognat blir de rosa.

Trädet har visa likheter med rönnbärsträdet och frukterna med peppar och kallas ibland för falsk peppar men det har inte något släktskap med pepparbusken.

Frukterna används som krydda, känt under namnet Rosépeppar.

Trädet är mycket vanligt på Gran Canaria men det är konstigt nog väldigt svårt att få tag i rosépeppar i butikerna.

Stämningen var minst sagt hög. Varje passning, skott, målvaktsräddning och domslut kommenterades.

Synen på det inträffade var likartad, men uttrycksätten skilde sig åt. Flest ovationer fick naturligtvis hemmasonen från Arguineguín - David Silva. De båda hemmamålen firades med jubel och dans och när slutsignalen ljöd, var det många som sprang ner i havet för att svalka av sig inför det stundande midsommarfirandet.

Midsommarafton

På Gran Canaria infaller midsommarafton alltid på samma dag, den 23 juni och inte tvunget på en fredag som i Sverige. Numera har firandet kristliga förtecken, varför den i Spanien kallas Fiesta San Juan. På svenska skulle det innebära firandet av Johannes Döparens födelse, ungefär sex månader innan jul.

Men traditionen är mycket äldre än så. Årets kortaste natt skulle vakas in och olika offertillställningar borde säkerställa

att naturkrafterna blidkades. Även om blodsutgjutelsen är borta sker symboliska offer i form av otaliga eldar och sprakande fyrverkerier.

Musik och dans pågår hela natten och det är gott om god mat och det dricks ansenliga mängder, i synnerhet öl. Det är således en synnerligen uppsluppen fest, men med en noterbar skillnad gentemot den nordiska motsvarigheten.

Det är livligt och glatt, men inget stök.

Himmelsdalen av Marie Hermanson

Himmelsdalen är namnet på en rekreationsklinik för ”folk som gått in i väggen” eller har andra psykiska problem. Kliniken är vackert belägen i en dalsänka i de Schweiziska alperna.

Max befinner sig på kliniken och sänder ett brev till sin tvillingbror Daniel att han gärna skulle vilja ha besök av honom. Väl där ber Max honom att de ska byta plats ett par dagar eftersom Max behöver skaffa fram pengar till den dyra sjukhusräkningen.

Men Max kommer inte tillbaka och Daniel inser att Himmelsdalen inte är det paradis som det ser ut att vara vid första anblicken.

Spännande som en thriller och mycket välskriven.

Svenska Bokhandeln

Gran Canaria eller Åland De båda öarna uppvisar vissa likheter.

De är med i EU, men ändå inte. Undantaget, som ofta skapar stor förvirring är tullbestämmelserna. På Gran Canaria finns inga VAT-nummer. IVA gäller bara på fastlandet och ofta blir förbistringen större vid kontakter med det spanska fastlandet än vid relationer med utlänningar. Turister vet säkert också att de generösa villkoren med införsel av sprit och cigaretter mellan medlemsländer inte

gäller här. Men en stor förmån värd att uppmärksamma för de som stannar under en längre period på ön är betydelsen av att ha ett ”Residente”. Bland annat har man 50 procents rabatt på resor till grannöarna och fastlandet. Så varför inte ta en avstickare till exempelvis Sevilla, för två personer tur och retur till det facila priset av 40 €? Flygresan på drygt två timmar tar dig till en annorlunda miljö som garanterat bjuder på sevärdheter.

Notiser Positiv överraskning • Vinprovning - Den 28 maj hölls i Kongresshallen i Las Palmas en tillställning benämnd Tasting Room. Här bjöd 30 vintillverkare på tillsammans 130 olika sorters vin. En celeber gäst och föredragshållare var David Seijas, sommelier på El Bulli.

• Skogsbrand - San Mateo drabbades av en oförklarlig brand. Trolig förklaring kan vara att den var anlagd. Stöd för teorin finns bland annat i omständigheten att liknande förlopp i närliggande plats skedde för tre år sedan.

Väderleksmässigt var omständigheterna gynnsamma, hög luftfuktighet och vindstilla, varför elden kunde släckas innan några större skador hunnit uppstå.

Besluten vid EU-toppmötet gjorde att Europas börser steg kraftigt. Spanska räntor på statsobligationer sjönk rejält och euron tappade något i värde. Visserligen är det långt till dess att besluten genomförts men signalen om samförstånd räckte för att skapa en euforisk stämning runt om i världen.

Krisen för euron har varit ett ständigt återkommande tema i de flesta tidningars ekonomispalter. Inte minst har Sveriges finansminister varit djupt oroad för den negativa utvecklingen av eurons värde. Andra belackare har förutspått värderas eller rent av kollaps. Men kan inte en försvagad euro vara en fördel för Spanien? Och varför är en devalveringsliknande process så farlig för euron, när svenska

Förvandling – förädling!

• Katastrofberedskap – en olycka med en Airbus 320, med 150 passagerare och sex besättningsmän, på väg från London, simulerades för att träna och koordinera en tänkt räddningsaktion.

Gran Canaria är mitt uppe i en stor förändringsprocess, som säkert kommer att leda till stor framgång. I San Bartolome de Tirajana planeras för omfattande byggnadsprojekt. Planer finns på att riva Hotel Grand Oasis Palace, förändra hela kvarter runt köpcentret Sandia och att bygga om Faro 2 med bl a El Corte Inglés som intressent. Syftet är ett och detsamma. Att höja kvalitet och attrahera besökare som är villiga att betala för det.

Ekonomi

Börsen

Avslutningen på junis sista handelsdag var remarkabel.

Svenska börsen (OMX30) gick upp med 4 procent. Än värre var Madridbörsen (IBEX35) med sin uppgång på knappa 5,7 procent. Utvecklingen för juni månad uppvisar samma mönster. Det är en kraftigare

Valutor

Återigen är det Sverige som har den största förändringen av kronans värde gentemot euron.

Under juni månad har kronan stärkts med knappt 3 procent.

Norska kronan uppvisar en obetydlig förstärkning,

Vid ett besök nyligen i Sevilla var kontrasten gentemot Gran Canaria och dess södra turistområden slående.

Här är mängder med lokaler tomma.

Många etablissemang har allt för få gäster och ofta består konkurrensen i att erbjuda mesta möjliga för lägsta tänkbara pris.

Inte så i Sevilla. Gatorna var breddfyllda med fastboende och turister. Dygnet runt var det en fartfylld kommers på samtliga barer och restauranger. Och det var med kanariska mått, mycket dyrt!

Det mest iögonfallande var allas strävan att erbjuda hög kvalitet. Bortsett från internationella kedjor, var individualiteten förhärskande. Från presentationen av menyn, inredningen, servicen, allt vittnade om en önskan att ge kunden det där lilla

The first car that we decided to try out for this section was the Nissan Juke. It is a chunky car and comes in various models both diesel and petrol, from the outside the Juke looks robust but the lines are agreeable, it is a four door hatchback and once inside it quickly becomes clear that the design was based on that of a motorcycle, the seats are basic yet comfortable with a very relaxing raised part in the center of the seat which pushes your back in such a way that it feels like a massage without movement. The dials are round and clear and a touch retro, again based on a motorbike styling, slightly off-putting for me was the central transmission molding which is based on the petrol tank of a motorbike and made

So next decision was which driving mode to use, economy, normal or sport . Being that for the rest of the year this page is dedicated to football, I decided on sport and boy was I glad that I did, the Juke might look a bit like a weather girl but as soon as you press the accelerator she turns into a cheeky girl. The model that I was driving has 115bhp but as soon as I put my foot down just a touch I was pushed straight back into my seat, handling is good and though I did not get her onto the motorway around town she was nippy and fun.

I would say for somebody single, a couple or a small family the Nissan Juke would

suit most needs but for a large family probably not, boot space is limited, even though there is a secret hidden compartment underneath the main base of the boot and the parcel shelf can be taken out, even with that being so you would be hard pushed to get 2 decent sized suitcases in the car.

Prices start at around 14,000€ for the basic model going up to just under 18,000€ for the top of the range with all the trimmings.
