Tournament: Earth 2013 came to a stunning end. A newcomer to the landscape — a Canarian volcano that wasn’t even above the water’s surface —literally came out of nowhere to win the first-ever NASA Earth Observatory image of the year tournament.

The #7 seeded El Hierro submarine eruption from the “events” category captured the overall crown.

In a true Cinderella story, the underwater volcano proceeded to knock off four higher seeds before meeting another #7 seed—the crack in the Pine Island Glacier—for the final.

The match up was not even close, as

El Hierro romped in with 91 percent of the votes. Helped by readers of The Canary News, who voted vigorously.

Four months after it began, the underwater volcanic eruption off El Hierro Island persists.

This natural-colour satellite image, collected on February 10, 2012, shows the site of the eruption, near the fishing village of La Restinga.

Bright aquamarine water indicates high concentrations of volcanic material. Immediately above the vent, a patch of brown water resembles a turbulent hot tub and indicates when and where the eruption is strongest.

Video of the eruption shows the activity in more detail.

Some of you may know that there have been the rumblings of renewed seismic activity over the last month as the active volcanoes was hit by another earthquake swarm, which so far at its most ferocious has reached 4.9 on the Richter scale and caused minor landslides on El Hierro.

Perhaps this island debutant was simply shaking in anticipation of her knew found global fame, perhaps there is more to come.

“1forTLC” is a solidarity campaign where customers purchase an extra item to be donated to someone else who most needs it. It is a very simple and effective method of helping your local community, by empowering individual customers to spend just a little extra at the till, when they can spare it, in order to help someone else who really needs it. The emphasis here is on items that can be offered to people who need them whether it be coffees, sandwiches or anything else that those on low income might struggle to afford.

is to buy an extra kilo of nonperishable food at Christmastime, which is then collected and distributed to those who need help most. The campaign has been such a success that now several Operación Kilo events are held throughout the year all across The Canaries, throughout Spain and further afield.

Since the global recession the need for providing extra groceries to disadvantaged families has increased and several supermarket chains now offer a “double-up” food drive where you can buy an extra item (or three or more) and leave the extra purchases with a group of volunteers near the checkout. The supermarket then supplements the donations with an equal amount, making it a double win situation for those who are most vulnerable in society.

Carrefour recently hosted one such event at the beginning of April which was a resounding success in providing more than 20,000 litres of milk and many 10s of thousands of kilos of extra foodstuffs which are right now being distributed through neighbourhood projects to help families for whom affording just basic foodstuffs can be a real challenge in the current economic climate.

a pedal-push further, as is her way, in the run up to Operation Kilo, completing a sponsored halfmarathon by bicycle from El Muelle in Las Palmas cycling along Avda.

Maritima and back. She raised over €600 all on her own with a view to giving the proceeds to food projects in the North and the South of the Island as well as raising awareness and money for UK charity Sightsavers.

By wisely as ever, using the donations at the Carrefour food drive, she made her positive action doubly worthwhile by achieving well over €1200 worth of food to be distributed to those who are most in need here in Gran Canaria.

The British Church in Las Palmas is a little bit of home-from-home, even if you are not a church-goer.

They recently held a Tea and Books event where you could enjoy a typical English afternoon tea and buy English books, cards, dvds, not to mention enjoying a nice chat with other expats and members of the English speaking community in the capital.

Certainly not to be missed if you crave a taste of home, or just want to experience an authentic traditional English affair. All you language learners may benefit more than you know!

“Can you tell me about some charitable organisations on the island?”

The ladies of the local Lion’s Club, Arguineguin-Mogan, raised 220€ for local charitable causes, by organising a social evening with the generous support of the management at ‘Garbos’ dinner theatre. The Lions Club is an international organisation and there are several clubs on Gran Canaria: The Arguineguin-Mogan Club is unique in that it’s members are only women and they originate from seven different countries.

The club works to support mainly local community projects, especially children, and they are currently organising a day excursion for a group of children in collaboration with the local authorities. They can regularly be found at the Saturday TARA rastro market in Arguineguín, selling donated items and using the funds raised to support their various projects.

Future campaigns include access to sports for the children of families in crisis and also international campaigns such as the collection of pencils and stationary for a charitable Canarian school in Africa and the on-going collection of Spectacles which are reconditioned and given to those in need in the third world.

The PRIDE has Talent Competition Nights are a new innovation and we want bar owners to put forward their very best people for this open talent competition. There will be major parties

all week, right through the main Saturday PRIDE Parade to the big night on Sunday 12th May. This year, the final night of PRIDE, with the Finale Show on Sunday ensuring that everyone gets to see the star performers after the outrageously well attended Parade has on occasion left one or two people worse for wear, this year they’ll have plenty of time to recover .

GAYPRIDE Maspalomas simply is great for business, particularly in the south of the island!

But, despite all the income it generates all around Gran Canaria, it is still a charity-run event and doesn’t earn any profit for GLAY. As a registered Association, it receives very little natural funding, and relies heavily on your Sponsorship.

With less than one month to go, Maspalomas PRIDE still needs a lot of help.

With fewer Corporate Sponsors than ever before, they are lucky to have profound support from the Ayuntamiento, who provide the main stage, and all the local services working to help Maspalomas Gay PRIDE happen, but they need to raise cash also. And in exchange they offer premier advertising opportunities and the chance to directly and repeatedly engage well over 100,000 people over the course of 9 days.

One for The Local Community Could the 'suspended' coffee work in Gran Canaria?

"We enter a little coffeehouse with a friend of mine and give our order. While we’re approaching our table two people

come in and they go to the counter: ‘Five coffees, please. Two of them for us and three suspended’ They pay for their

order, take the two and leave.

I ask my friend: “What are those ‘suspended’ coffees?”

My friend: “Wait for it and you will see.”

Some more people enter. Two girls ask for one coffee each, pay and go. The next order was for seven coffees and it was made by three lawyers - three for them and four ‘suspended’. While I still wonder what’s the deal with those ‘suspended’ coffees I enjoy the sunny weather and the beautiful view towards the square in front of the café. Suddenly a man dressed in shabby clothes who looks like a beggar comes in through the door and kindly asks

‘Do you have a suspended coffee ?’

It’s simple - people pay in advance for a coffee meant for someone who can not afford a warm beverage. The tradition with the suspended coffees started in Naples, but it has spread all over the world and in some places you can order not only a suspended coffee, but also a sandwich or a whole meal.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have such cafés or even grocery stores in every town where the less fortunate will find hope and support ? If you own a business why don’t you offer it to your clients… I am sure many of them will like it"

Financial assistance for victims of domestic violence

The payment of Child Support In my divorce it was agreed that I pay maintenance for my daughter. Now my daughter, who lives with her mother, is 27 years old, has completed her studies and is on the unemployment list, though she will receive no benefits as she has not yet contributed anything. Until when do I have to keep paying if she doesn’t find a job?

The divorce settlement should certainly state up to when you should keep paying maintenance. If it is not clear, do not stop paying until have obtained the clear decision of a judge. You should present a petition of release before the court to have the maintenance order finalised or removed.

I have no income. I live from the salary of my husband, who beats me. If I complain of mistreatment, do I have a right to financial support?

Report your situation as soon as you can by calling 016. You could be eligible for financial support, called Active Reintegration Income. In order to apply for this aid you must denounce your husband and be declared a victim of domestic violence and then be registered with the National Employment Institute, these days known as the State Public Employment Service or Servicio Público de Empleo Estatal (SEPE). This benefit payment can be awarded for a maximum of 11 months and the amount is fixed for 2013 at €426 per month, extra to being adequately accommodated.

Disciplining minors without violence I am not allowed to give a slap to my son to correct his behaviour. What do I do then when he hits me?

Under Spanish law it is the minor who is primarily protected.

Indeed, the Criminal Code penalizes any violent physical or psychological punishment that a parent imposes on a child

who misbehaves. On the other hand, parents are not expected to allow bad behaviour or disobedience from their children.

So the question becomes; how can you make a child obey you if psychical and psychological force are prohibited by law?

It must be assumed that an adolescent minor will not obey if they do not want to. The solution must therefore be in the psychology of parenting and in knowing the child well enough to get them to accept the rules willingly.

In serious cases of disobedience, you may have to ask a judge to intervene so that the responsibility of ensuring that the law is not broken falls on the courts.

Naturally, the current situation can lead to sometimes absurd solutions, which overload the courts having to consider solutions for disobedient children, which may previously have been reached by parents or guardians in the family home.

If your child simply does what they want and you cannot get them to obey you, especially if they direct violence towards you, then you may have no other solution than to seek help from government institutions (advisors, attorneys, social services and the courts) because were you to “give him a slap”, then your own child may be able to claim against you, and the usual penalty for a parent is around 67 days in prison with a restraining order meaning that you may not be able to come within 500 meters of your child for up to a year and 45 days.

In the UK the Chancellor has now played his hand and revealed his Budget and we now know that the deficit this year will be £123.2bn. Gross domestic product, which grew by a negligible 0.2% in 2012, is forecast to expand by 0.6% this year and by 1.8% in 2014. Needless to say, those growth projections are lower than they were when they were last wheeled out in the Autumn Statement.

Elsewhere in the speech were the usual selection of tax cuts and stimulus measures which have now been well-documented. It was not the Budget for growth that had been predicted and hoped for but "a Budget for people who aspire to work hard and get on", "a Budget for an aspiration nation" and "a Budget for a Britain that wants to be prosperous, solvent and free".

Investors didn't know quite what to make of it but they had great fun trying to come to a decision before, during and after the 54-minute speech. During the London session Cable ranged across one and a half US cents and the pound covered more than one euro cent. The Chancellor did not shift the emphasis of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) from

inflation to growth (although he did say the MPC's remit was up for discussion).

The minutes of the March MPC meeting did not show any increase in the number of members voting for more asset purchases. The employment data did not show an increase in either the rate of unemployment or the number of jobseekers. There was plenty that could have gone wrong for the pound but none of it did.

In the Euro zone just when we thought matters were settling up pops the issue in Cyprus who have to find around 5 billion Euros before receiving the bailout from the ECB etc.

Its now well documented that all Cypriot bank account holders were asked to pay however the government voted against this and now finds itself in a position of potentially running out of cash and leaving the country bankrupt, who will have bailed them out runs between, yes, the EU/ECB/IMF, Russia or maybe the church, by the time you read this however the answer should have been found.

Its not just Cyprus however that is causing some concern the OECD has trimmed its growth forecast for France and suggests it must do a

lot more to be competitive and create jobs at the same time suggesting the French government avoid any further spending cuts.

Better news for the zone came when a recent survey showed consumer confidence improving and investors still liking Spanish and Italian bonds and Portugal successfully selling government bonds.

In the USA the Federal Reserve commits itself to long term low interest rates and maintaining its monthly bond buying programme and with unemployment dropping and new housing starts increasing its beginning to look a healthier picture in the US. A student of mine (thanks Stuart) calls those handy little expressions we use to link up phrases ‘buzz words’. Here are a selection of the most useful, and how to use them: Also: también y además To say ‘also/too’, use también.

For example: Hablo español, y también alemán. I speak Spanish and also German. ¿Vives en Maspalomas? ¡Yo también! Do you live in Maspalomas? Me too.

Además has a similar meaning and can also be translated as what´s more when you want to add something extra to your list: Me encanta el sol y además, tengo buena calidad de vida aquí. I love the sun and what´s more, I have a good quality of life here.

Por aquí/por allí/por fin Por aquí means this way, or round here, while por allí (ahYEE) means that way or round there: El baño está por allí. The bathroom is over there. ¿Hay una farmacia por aquí?

Is there a chemist round here?

Mucho, tanto y demasiado These words mean much (a lot), so much, and too much, for example: Tengo mucho trabajo. I have a lot of (much) work.

at the beginning: al principio, and at the end: al final.

Tengo tanto trabajo que necesito ayuda. I have so much work that I need help.

Al principio, la pelí fue emocionante, pero al final, fue tonta. At the beginning, the film was exciting, but at the end it was silly.

Tengo demasiado trabajo, entonces estoy agotada. I have too much work, so I´m exhausted.

However: sin embargo

Tan o demasiado + adjective

Avoidable by using ‘but’ (pero), this is a handy word to expand your vocabulary:

Tan means ‘so’ and demasiado ‘too’ if followed by an adjective:

El clima aquí es excelente.

Sin embargo, no aguanto el calor cuando hay Calima.

The climate here is excellent.

However, I can´t stand the heat when there´s a Calima wind.

So: Entonces, por eso, así que .

Entonces has two meanings: so, (as a consequence) and then (in a sequence of events).

Estoy enferma entonces no salgo esta noche. I´m ill so I´m not going out tonight.

Llamé a mi amiga, y entonces salí para verla. I called my friend, and then I went out to see her.

Instead of entonces (so) you can also use así que, or por eso (that´s why). Similarly, to avoid repeating words, you can

Gay Pride is always a magnificent spectacle and a huge party in Gran Canaria, and preparations are well underway for this year’s spectacular. After all, Maspalomas Pride is one of the biggest events of its kind in the world. The very first Gay Pride in Maspalomas took place in May 2001, and we have seen the festival become more impressive each year. Thousands of gay men and women, as well as transgendered and bisexual people (LGBT), from across the world visit the island to have fun in the sun, as well as to enjoy the shows and street parade of the big weekend. This year’s Pride will be a time of parties, cultural events and shows. Those tourists and residents who are new to the island, as well as readers of ‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ may well be asking themselves, “What is all the fuss about?”

The first ever Gay Pride parade took place in 1969 and is known as the March on Stonewall. The event started as a protest against discrimination and violence against gay men and women in New York City. Although there have been many advances in equality since those dark days, it is time once again to ask ourselves if anything has really changed, or is it mostly superficial?

Each day we still read and hear of gay men and women who are persecuted for their sexuality.

In some countries, gay men and women are still strung up and publicly hanged from cranes as a warning to others. In other countries, the mind games that are played are subtler, but still have the same devastating effect upon men and women who have committed no crime, other than a desire to love and be loved.

History has taught us that during times of financial hardship, poverty and recession, it is always the minority groups who are oppressed. We saw this at its most horrific in Nazi Germany with the persecution of Jews, gypsies, disabled children and gay men and women, where a trip to the gas chambers was seen as “the final solution”.

Have we really learned anything? We are already seeing some repetition of hate crimes towards gay men and women, and others who are not considered as “normal” by the wider population. A recent appalling article in the Daily Mail, known by many as the Daily Fascist or the Daily Hate, written by the columnist Littlejohn, wrote an obnoxious article about a primary school teacher undergoing a sex change operation that was widely reported

as having led to her recent suicide. We know that verbal “gay bashing” is the order of the day for some unholy alliances of churches with doctrines as far apart as Catholics, Muslims and the Mormons. Right wing political parties continue to spread their message of hate in the UK, Spain, France and the US, and polls reveal that these parties are gaining in popularity as a result.

Recent debates about gay marriage in the UK, US, Spain and France have revealed many long held and carefully hidden prejudices that have shaken many gay men and women out of their relative complacency of hard won battles over the generations. The gay marriage issue has made many gay men and women realise that their ‘acceptance’ is only surface deep, and the hatred and disgust shown by many who deny gay men and women the right to love members of their own gender leave us in no doubt that gay equality does not and has never truly existed.

Maybe we have been lulled into a kind of security by crumbs thrown from the political table in the guise of civil partnerships and laws attempting to protect. However, although there have undoubtedly been many improvements in the lives of gay men and women, the attitudes of many remain unchanged, and hypocrisy still continues as recent debates surrounding gay marriage reveal.

Today, Gay Pride events have become an annual ritual all over the world and have grown to include thousands of gay and gay-friendly participants, families and friends of gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual people, as well as hundreds of spectators. We look forward to and will enjoy Maspalomas Gay Pride as usual; let us all enjoy a well-earned party of celebration. However, we should never forget the hard won fight of those who have gone before us. Let us remain on our guard, and continue to be aware of the on going challenges © Barrie Mahoney

Ciao Beach is the partner restaurant to Ciao Ciao on Amardoes Beach near Puerto Rico on the south coast and is, in my opinion, one of the best restaurants along this beautiful stretch of sand. There is something wonderful about this restaurant, maybe it is the excellent service, outstanding food, beautiful surroundings, or the amazing price. Food: Every element of visiting Ciao Beach is relaxed, and you know that you will have an amazing meal from the moment you enter. The staff are friendly, Service: attentive, but never over powering, and the food is delicious fresh and will make you return. On my recent trip to Amardores, I thought I would stop at Ciao Beach for lunch, and I was not dissapointed.

Atmosphere: We ordered a formaggio pizza, some breads, and a club sandwich, which is always huge and well worth the money. The pizza as always was well cooked, with just enough blue cheese to not be Price: overpowering. The breads were served with delicious home made Ali Oli, which is always topped up if neccessary.

The view alone is worth visiting Ciao Beach, but the food ensures Other: that you stay longer, and savour every moment. After out lunch , we had coffees, sat back and admired the beautiful vista. If you are lucky enough to be visiting Amardores, pop along to Ciao Beach, Beautiful surroundings, lovely staff & excellent value for money you will love everything about this place.

A NEW LIFE

My egg demand had increased so much that I needed more layers, and altogether I had many chicks they would not be laying for at least six months so the search for chickens begun. My knowledge of chickens knew that the best layers, and the cheapest birds were battery hens.

I spoke tot he chicken guy and ordered my 20 new chickens, which he assured me would be able to a) fit in my car b) lay eggs and c) look OK. We had to travel up the island to get the chickens, to an area which is not the nicest, and is considered to be one of those areas, that if you stop your car for too long the local kids will steal your wheels.

After getting really lost, we found the "dodgy" looking place which the chicken exchange was taking place. All that was going through my mind was would the policia find our bodies when the locals killed us and chopped us up into small pieces. However, in all fairness to the guy he is a helpful bloke, looking to earn a living like the rest of us, he just does his in odd ways.

Three small boxes were bundled into my car, at this point I doubted his counting abilities, as I would be surprised if all my chickens were there. However, didn't want to insult him, and had a general chat, where he told me that he had selected the best chickens for me, and only a few were missing feathers. We went onto to discuss ducks, bunny farming and "jiggy jiggy"...why do I end up discussing that subject with every Spanish man I come into contact with.

The journey home, was cold as the aircon had to up on full blast, and the smell was disgusting, however, we drove home with our new additions and anticipation of our "good condition" chickens. When we reached home, the boxes were placed into the orchard and slowly we opened the boxes...I took a step back and was shocked, which if you know me that takes a hell of a lot to achieve.

The emaciated 20 chickens that were in front of me, looked awful, beyond anything I have ever seen before. If these were good chickens, god forbid what a bad chicken would look like. The chickens stood in their boxes not knowing what to do, as we slowly tipped them out they stood and starred at the ground, with this puzzled look on their faces.

These chickens had never seen daylight, never felt dirt under their feet, and never had freedom to walk. They had been kept in cages the size of an A4 piece of paper, and through boredom had pecked their own feathers off. At this moment I understood why people campaign tirelessly to stop battery factories, and how every time all of us pop to the supermarket to buy our eggs, we are helping to put these animals in this condition. I am grateful that I could save these 20 from a non existent life, and will go back for more in the future.....

Less well known maybe is Beethoven’s “Hope is confidence, determination and courage- and faith is the ultimate expression of hope”.

And I like the anonymous “Hope sees the invisible, feels the intangible and achieves the impossible”.

This Easter as I tucked into my symbolic but ‘definitely not on the diet’ choccy egg, and at the other end of the spectrum, having just watched the film “The Passion of the Christ” I found myself thinking of the hope that shines out of the Easter story.

Even if you are not a particularly religious or spiritual person, it is difficult not to feel moved and inspired by the message of Easter. The lent/ Easter season is about hope and rebirth and seeks to reminds us of the importance of reflection as we journey through life.

Is the hope embodied in it really just for Spring? Or is it significant every day of every year... in fact while ever hope springs eternal in the human breast? You decide.

The Flight of the Snowbird

Migratory birds are a fascinating phenomenon. Year after year when spring is sprung, this dependable flock rises as one and flies north thousands of miles returning once more to their home breeding grounds. Come the fall, the flock is southward bound again, drawn back to the warmer climes of Paradise. And so the cycle repeats itself generation after generation.

This breed of migratory sentient being is the beloved Nordic Snowbird, a wise and wonderful species, though wingless they may be.

When autumn beckons their return to Gran Canaria, their arrival brings hope and happiness to the indigenous island creatures, the hearty Stayputacus. These flightless fellows do not migrate, but tend their nests all the year round.

Each spring, as the Nordic Snowbirds return home to the high latitudes, the Stayputacus weep, sad and sorry to bid a temporary adieu to their dear, oh so important friends.

TARA weeps as well. Our cherished supporters, hailing from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and all the northern latitudes, support TARA in many ways, donating and shopping in our previously owned treasures charity shops; participating as buyers and sellers in the weekly TARA charity flea market; enjoying the fall and winter TARA charity events. Most important of all is the fostering of abandoned dogs and cats, kittens and puppies. The TARA policy for years has been to focus efforts on

caretaking homeless domestic animals (pets) in homes rather than kennels. No matter how dedicated TARA volunteers struggled and strove to provide good care, kennel life is still living in a cage.

The beautiful answer was found in the foster home program. Each year, when the Nordic Snowbirds arrive in Gran Canaria, many opt to foster homeless pets rescued by TARA. These canines and felines are given the advantage of the human home environment, the affection and love that was promised thousands of years ago during the ever-evolving process of domestication.

The foster home helps ensure the health and happiness of those who would be otherwise homeless. These pets transition from home to home, love to love. Soon, with luck and hard work, a permanent home is identified and each foster pet is adopted, safe and secure in their new home for life.

Every spring TARA mourns the departure of the beloved Nordic Snowbird. The migration creates a vast void – homeless animals with no place to go. Every year, TARA understands that the number of foster homes will deplete dramatically come spring. Each winter and early spring, TARA desperately prepares for the loss, searching for foster home alternatives to the homes of the gracious Snowbirds. Each year, TARA comes up sadly short.

If you are a Stayputucus and love animals, feel the pain of homeless dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens, and if you want to reach out and help right the wrong, please call TARA or contact TARA Animal Respect Association on Facebook.

Just say, “I want to help. I want to be a foster parent to a homeless pet.” TARA will embrace you as they embrace the Nordic Snowbird, with warmth and appreciation. You will be glad you did. TARA will be relieved. And a poor, innocent, helpless, homeless pet will find joy once again.

GRACE is a small lovable terrier mix, less than 10KG and approx 2 years of age. This cutie is chipped, vaccinated and sterilized. She plays well with other dogs, is a little bit wary with big dogs. She is very good with cats, and just wants to love and to be loved. Could you be that person for her?

AMBER

Put simply, this little girl is much better in real life than you can see from just her picture, despite having such a beautiful face and warm eyes, she is absolutely gorgeous in person. She is around 2 years old, very social and very good with children. She is a cocker-dachshund mix who just wants to play and be kissed and cuddled.

LEVI

is a young, special dog who needs a home to call his own, at around 20 KG and only 2 years old he requires a confident home that understands his training needs. With his striking colouring, and excellent good nature, he’ll melt your heart when you meet him, as he simply wants to play for hours. Levi is good with humans, plays well with all other animals, and is castrated and vaccinated.

DAWN

is a terrier mix, around 4 months and 7 kg. She is microchipped and vaccinated. Dawn will be a medium size girl when adult, just the right size. Dawn’s sad story is that both her front legs were broken when she was a very small puppy. Since we don't know her history we have no way to tell how this happened. It hasn't affected her mobility but makes her a special girl. She is very, very loving, well behaved, and really social.

SIOUX

is approx 10 months old, and weighs 13KG, she is a loving, playful, small shepherdess mix. This young lady gets along great with other dogs, children, cats and other animals.

JERRY

is a lovable and playful Labrador mix, aged approx 5-6 months and around 12KG, he is good with other dogs, cats and is very human friendly

is a sweetie. This very affectionate, playful collie mix, at approx 18 months, just wants a family to call her own. She is one of the 4 Amigos, who were rescued last month. Kira has been sterilised, chipped, vaccinated, and all she needs now is a loving home.

Walking App

Trying the new iPhone app for hikers in Gran Canaria We all love exploring the mountains and beaches in Gran Canaria but sometimes we don’t know where to go and the maps and books can be a bit daunting. Well not any more. Rambling Roger, our very own resident walking expert and Richard of Gran Canaria Guru fame have teamed up to produce what they argue is the first fully guided walking app in the world. Over the next four issues we are going to put it to the test trying out four of their walks. Here’s how we got on with walk number one...

First we had to find an iPhone, not very difficult as everyone seems to have one nowadays and sure enough someone in the office lent us theirs in exchange for a packet of biscuits. We downloaded the free app and had a poke around. The first thing you see are the instructions and the free walk that is included. It seemed pretty simple so we had a look at the free walk, browsed the photos and information, packed our walking shoes and headed straight up to San Bartolome.

The walk started at the church which was easy to find and nice and convenient as we didn’t really know much about San Bartolome. It’s also close to a couple of bars so we sneaked in an essential Tropical and plate of Calamares before we left.

Las Palmas came alive with wedding fever last month, with Gran Canaria's finest wedding suppliers coming together to display their services and products.

For a wedding planner, this is the event of the year, and I spent hours browsing the colorful stalls and talking to some of the very best in their field about their great new products and services for 2013/14.

For a tiny island we should be very proud of what we have to offer our bride and grooms to be, and it was extremely refreshing to see new ideas and products entering the market.

The photo booth was probably one of the newest ideas that has filtered from the USA offering a fun alternative to the wedding guest book.

Numerous suppliers offered different ways in which you could leave the bride and groom with a snapshot of their day. From the traditional 4 photo strips that can be placed into a guest book with a short message, to video messages saved onto a DVD for the bride and groom to keep.

Not forgetting the very popular chocolate fountain presented deliciously by Fuentes de Chocolate. With the endless array of sweets, fruits and biscuits available to dip into the flowing chocolate, it really was no surprise I spent most of the day talking to its owner and founder Renée Marguerite van den Bosch.

Our professional and reliable bridal transport company also had a huge presence at the event, showcasing its new edition to their fleet, its flagship “Roll Royce” in glistening cream, adding that extra bit of luxury to its already beautiful fleet of vintage bridal cars.

It was also a pleasure to spend some time catching up with our great venue collaborators presenting their hotels and fincas situated in

the south of the island, namely, the Gloria Palace Group, H10 Group, Lopesan Group and La Finca Condal Vega Grande.

These hotels and venues are specialized in organizing the most exquisite wedding celebrations and are hugely popular, not only with the residents on the island, but also my bride and grooms from abroad.

From caterers, hair and make-up artists, bridal lingerie, fireworks, marquees, venue decoration, wedding cake designers, the latest in bridal fashion………… to entertainers, photographers, DJ’s and sound and lighting experts, the excited brides and grooms and their families were spoilt for choice and certainly did not leave disappointed.

Gran Canarias Wedding Fayre 2013 was a huge success and an event our industry can be proud of. I can’t wait for next year!

When we were ready we pressed start on the app and, just as promised in the instructions, 10 seconds later up popped a message telling us where to go and a red pointer flashed up our position on the map. Cool.

So off we trekked through the town with the app bleeping and vibrating whenever we needed to take a turn. So far so good.

Just outside the town (about 5 minutes after starting), the real route began and up the hill we went. Now, I like to think of myself as quite fit, but from the bottom, the hill looked quite daunting and my girlfriend wasn’t convinced.

But the path wound gently up the hill and soon opened up into beautiful countryside with not a building in site. At times the path got a bit rocky but nothing too difficult. We soon skirted round the side of the hill and were treated with beautiful views back over San Bartolome right down to the sea.

The app continued bleeping away when necessary, letting us know where to go, and an hour and a half later we found ourselves at the halfway point at the top of the walk with breathtaking views across half of Gran Canaria. Conveniently Roger has designed this walk with a nice picnic spot at the half way stage so we pulled up a rock each and enjoyed a slightly soggy sandwich while breathing in the mountain air.

The way down was easy. Beautiful Camino Reals and paved footpaths took us through the pine forest back down into town. On the way back we stopped off the Hotel Tirajana for a well-deserved bottle of Tropical and a bowl of pretty sour olives.

3 hours after beginning we were back at the church where another Tropical and some Canarian Potatoes awaited in one of the many cafes. A great end to a really top day.

So how was the app? Brilliant. It told us where to go exactly when we needed it. It was a bit like a car Sat Nav in that we didn’t really have to worry about getting lost. It made the whole walk so much less stressful than carrying around a bag full of directions and a chunky GPS that we don’t know how to use. I will definitely be using it again. The walk itself was excellent with beautiful views and clearly marked paths, but it was written by Rambling Roger so you wouldn’t expect anything less.

Jag har haft en fullspäckad månad fram tills nu. Har jobbat som konstnär i många år och haft utställningar med min konst sedan 9 års ålder.

Den senaste hade jag på påsk rundan i Malmö den 29 mars och mycket av min energi har gått till att förbereda inför den. På vernissage-dagen så kom mer än 400 personer och jag slog säljrekord. Det gör mig så klart väldigt lycklig

Summer in Gran Canaria The largest number of the Swedish visitors to Gran Canaria come here during the winter. It is noticeable, however, that there has been an increase in ssummer during recent times. Many people think it is because it gets too hot for us here.

This is an erroneous perception. I prefer summer in Gran Canaria, just as I prefer summer in Sweden. The warmest period is probably between July & September.

It is not uncommon for temperature to climb to 45 degrees. Summer starts with milder temperatures in the month of May. During the summer a weather event called Calima can occour, which means very hot winds blowing sand and dust in from North Africa. The phenomenon usually only lasts a few days at a time. It can feel like someone is standing over you with a hair dryer being blown on to your skin. It is however one of my coolest experiences. Perfect for the heat hungry people who love to lie on the beaches. The sweetest thing is to take a nightswim and really enjoy it, because the heat does not lessen at night. If you do prefer to take a break from the heat, there is always the option of going to Las Palmas where it is often 4-5 degrees cooler than it is on the southernmost parts.

Exhibitionism I've had a busy month until now. I have worked as an artist for many years and exhibited my art since age 9. The last one was opened at Easter in Malmö, on 29th March and a lot of my energy has gone into preparing for it. More than 400 people came to the opening-day and I hit a sales record. It clearly makes me so very happy that people love the art I create. I've also had some openings here in Gran Canaria over the years I have lived here. Sommaren på Gran Canaria Den största andelen av de svenska besökarna på Gran Canaria är här under vinterhalvåret. Det märks dock att det blivit en ökning på senare tid. Många tror därför att det inte kan bli riktigt varmt här. Det är en stor feluppfattning. Jag föredrar sommaren på Gran Canaria, precis som jag föredrar sommaren i Sverige.

Varmast är det förmodligen mellan juli till september.

Då är det inte ovanligt att temperaturen ligger på 45 grader. Sommaren börjar med något mildare temperaturer i maj månad. Under sommaren inträffar ibland klimathändelsen Calima som innebär att väldigt heta vindar drar in från Nordafrika.

Fenomenet varar oftast bara i några få dagar åt gången. Då kan det kännas som någon står och blåser med en hårfön mot din hud.

Det är en enligt mig häftig upplevelse. Passar perfekt till de värmehungrande människorna som älskar att ligga vid stranden.

Det skönaste är att vid de tillfällena ta ett nattbad och njuta, eftersom värmen även är nattetid. Om ni föredrar att ta en paus från värmen så finns alltid alternativet att åka till Las Palmas där det många gånger är ner till 4-5 grader svalare än det är på de sydligaste delarna.

Brännmaneter har invaderat Gran Canaria Det är starka vindar, högt tidvatten, strömmar och varmare vatten som har lett till manetinvasionen på Kanarieöarna. På tre decennier har den mest kända stranden i Las Palmas inte varit drabbad så som nu.

Främst är det den lilla rosa brännmaneten, Pelagia noctiluca, som hotar ständerna. Maneten blir bara fem-sex centimeter i diameter, men bränns kraftigt. Blir maneten retad

sänder den även ut ett kraftigt ljus.

Värst drabbat är La Puntilla och området La Vieja. Där fick Las Palmas stad på Gran Canaria stänga av områdena för att undvika att maneterna skulle skada någon. Det har skett en minskning men så länge vindarna håller i sig så kan problemet kvarstå.

Stinging jellyfish invade Gran Canaria Strong winds, high tides, currents and warmer water led to a jellyfish invasion of the Canary Islands over Easter. In three decades, the most famous beach in Las Palmas has not ever been affected as badly.

Primarily, it is the little pink jellyfish, Pelagia noctiluca, which threatens the normal state of affairs. The jellyfish themselves are only five or six inches in diameter, but sting vigorously. When teased these jellyfish even send out a powerful glow.

The worst affected areas were La Puntilla and La Vieja. There, in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria several areas were closed off to avoid the jellyfish hurting anyone.

Cave house in Artenara

Arte Nature (Artenara Naturaleza Turismo Rural, SL) is a family company. We got the opportunity to try living in a typical Gran Canaria cave-house and fell completely in love with it. Seeing it in a picture sure does not do it justice, in any way. It is so genuinely, cozy and feels both original and exclusive. My partner and I immediately saw the possibilities. "If I want to write..." "Were I a pensioner..." "When I need to relax..."

This was the ultimate opportunity to really enjoy tranquility. These caves are situated in the magnificent natural heart of the lush surrounding countryside. From the outside these buildings appear very small, but once inside they open up a whole new world. We enjoyed windows looking straight out on to a valley and sat for a long time just enjoying nature.

Located in a climate completely different from what most associate with Gran Canaria. It is incredibly clean and the air feels light and fresh.

José Antonio Rodríguez rennovated the first cave-house here, which originally belonged to his grandparents, in 1998 and was at first just a hobby.

His main objective was to promote the village and to avoid it being "forgotten". A few years ago he bought another cave-house, which he renovated. Today they are called "El Mimo" and "Las Margaritas".

Right now, Arte Natural rent out five cave-houses managed by José Antonio's daughter Miriam Rodriguez. Arte Nature also have beehives where they produce honey and even have a small vineyard, producin the wine that they use as a welcome to their guests.
