Rumor Has It Talk, talk. For the first time ever, the Art of Conversation was a sold-out event before the invitations were mailed. Artist David Adickes was presented with a certificate in his honor by Mayor Anise Parker. Beth Wolff and Bill Stubbs chaired the wildly successful event that featured 32 conversationalists, including Lynn Wyatt, sportscaster Bob Allen, Great Day Houston’s Deborah Duncan, Channel 8’s Lisa Tripani Shumate and Ernie Manouse, architect Cameron Armstrong, chef David Cordúa, Milo Hamilton, the former voice of the Astros, sportswriter John McClain, Gracie Cavnar of Recipe for Success, rodeo lifetime VP Carolyn Faulk, CEO of Uptown Houston John Breeding and pawn-shop diva Pamela Wright. Next year save the date, Nov. 10. Doctor’s orders. With 200 friends at The Wynden, Dr. Carl Schmulen thanked his wife, Lynn, for the 65th birthday dinner/dance and mark of his retirement. He told amusing stories from his 35-year career as a gastroenterologist. The stand-up routines continued from family members Caren and Rob Sweetland, Danielle and Mark Schmulen, and Lindsay and Mark Schmulen, plus partner Dr. Ray Verm and friends Richard Rosenberg and Richard Josephson. There was an amusing video of seven grandchildren with their own quips. Party favors were Schmulen Happy Pills (jelly beans) packaged in prescription bottles labeled from the Schmulen Family Pharmacy. Just a backpack. All her life, Mabel Sanders, a passionate hiker, planned to hike the Way of St. James, the famous Camino de Santiago trail in north. She finally did the 1,000year-old pilgrimage to the shrine of St. James in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela as a 50th birthday present to herself. She hiked 38 days, 8-10 hours a day, starting from Saint-JeanPied-de-Port on the French side of the Pyrenees to the Atlantic coast of Spain, a total of 758 kilometers. She did not have a cell phone but used an iPod Touch 4 to make free Viber and Skype calls to communicate daily. While hubby Jim was in Houston, Mabel met people from all over the world and received a cherished certificate of accomplishment at the church.
