‘Hataw' Dance returns to highlight 49th BU anniversary program
s the highlight of this year’s celebration, Bicol University celebrates its 49th founding anniversary and marks the start of the 2018 BU Week with a foot parade and an opening program that features the return of the university’s festive annual tradition –the Hataw Dance presentation. Aligning with this year’s theme: “Sustaining Gains, Building Milestones”, the celebration of BU’s birth and the start of the BU Week gave focus on showing appreciation to BU’s growth and advancements throughout the years, particularly its climb in achieving a higher level of academic excellence. The celebration actually began early Tuesday morning with a Thanksgiving Mass at BU College of Arts and Letters (BUCAL) Amphitheatre, celebrated by Fr. Ceasar Dizon
PRESIDENT’S OUTBOX
I
t is with a deep sense of pride and gratitude that I greet every member of the Bicol University family, a blessed and bountiful 49th Founding Anniversary! As I greet you today with much rejoicing, I am at the same time expressing my deep regret for my absence in such an important milestone in the life of Bicol University. The saddest part of being the Head of the Family is missing out moments when your presence is needed but a far more important duty demands your attention. I have to once again respond to the duty that will benefit our family here in Bicol University and attend to the Board of Regents’ meeting, including the Congress and Senate budget hearings. But I am quite sure the outcome of all these, will hopefully, be positive. But let us focus on this moment – this occasion
SVD. In his homily, Fr. Dizon gave emphasis on staying steadfast on the goal of achieving the university’s vision. In the afternoon, nearly ten thousand of BU’s students, faculty members, personnel, and officials assembled at Peñaranda Park in Legazpi, which is the starting point for the foot parade. The 15 BU campuses showed school spirit as the parade traversed from Peñaranda Park to the Albay Sports Complex in BU’s Main Campus. The parade and program also marked the start of the annual BU founding anniversary – the highly anticipated week-long event of the student body, wherein participants from the campuses contend against each other in a series of athletic and special competitions. As the parade ended, the opening program
officially began with a flag-raising ceremony headed by BU President Dr. Arnulfo Mascariñas and the University Vice-Presidents. After each of the campuses were acknowledged, the program gave way to the much awaited Opening Dance Salvo, where each college had a group of 15 members participate in a conglomerated dance number. After the Opening Dance Salvo, those present watched the return of the Hataw Dance presentation –the inter-college freshmen group dance that went into hiatus during the past two years. The participating groups brought their unique dance routines in their presentation, along with the faculty of BU Institute of Physical Education and Sports Recreation (IPESR) headed by its Director Carina L. Sales.
that all of us should cherish. We have much to be thankful for. Divine Providence has indeed, been smiling down on us from the moment of Bicol University’s birth until its full blossoming into the premier University, today. The years of our growth may have tested our resolve as a community of transformative educators. But we have continuously evolved with the changing education landscape and the demands of an ever-growing Region. Our strong and excellent profile in Instruction, Research, and Extension have made us worthy of a world class status by consistently maintaining our being a top performing school as evidenced by our sterling board examination performances in Social Work, Accountancy, Nursing, Engineering, and Education.v We have made our presence felt in all relevant areas by producing Centers of Development in Fisheries and Nursing, and Center of Excellence in Education – making us, a strong player in the field of regional progress and development. Over the years, Bicol University has carved its niche as a strong force in delivering quality education and pioneering innovations in various fields. With all the struggles and challenges that we have encountered, we have remained steadfast in our mission as an education hub where the best and the brightest minds converge and synergize. With the challenges of an ever evolving academic landscape and how Bicol University has continuously and relevantly responded, I am extremely confident that we will continue to sustain every gain that we have made all those 49 significant years. But today, as we focus on this moment, let me single-mindedly, focus on you my dear Bicol
University teaching and non-teaching personnel, and all the support staff. This is your day. Yes, we celebrate Bicol University’s 49 strong and excellent years. But more than that, we must celebrate your treasured presence that has made Bicol University an institution to reckon with in the Bicol Region, and beyond our University borders. Let us continue to likewise remember all our colleagues who have retired and are pursuing other hopes and dreams; and those whose mission in life has ended and have earned their well-deserved rest. This celebration is as much for them as it is for all of us here present today. They say that “you are what you eat.” Perhaps. After all, from the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. And today, my heart is filled with a deep sense of gratitude for all the sacrifices and efforts made by various men and women, especially those who keep on working, without seeking the limelight. So today, I pause, and pray, and in great thanksgiving, I say, with wholehearted pride and joy: “You are what Bicol University, has become.” Thank you to each of you for continuously helping us sustain our gains and build more milestones! In prayerful silence, let us continue to invoke the blessings of Divine Providence, that we may be allowed to continue in our service of the Bicolanos, and the nation in general, as we produce “change agents for social transformation and development.” Let us move forward with an ever decisive heart in the spirit of genuine collaboration and be ready to shine better, because the best is yet to come! Happy 49th Founding Anniversary my Bicol University family!
