Bicol University has indeed come a long way. We are now 47 years, and counting…

Before we know it, we will be half a century old.

We have enjoyed a month-long celebration of our journey of excellence, where we look back at our achievements and look forward to better things to come.

We have, as a family, committed ourselves to our vision of becoming a worldclass university, producing leaders and change agents for social transformation and development, in consonance with the standards set for the State Universities and Colleges’ levelling, which has, as its highest aim, SUC’s comparability to the best universities and colleges in Asia.

Our track record definitely shows that we are reaching milestone after milestone towards that end. I thank each and every one of you for the love and commitment you have poured out for Bicol University. It is through your hard work and fierce loyalty to our beloved institution that we have come this far, and it is through these same dedication and loyalty that we will soar to greater heights.

Indeed, this has been a great celebration of awareness of who we are and what we can still become.

BU marks 47th Founding Anniversary

Bicol University (BU) marked its 47th month-long Founding Anniversary which started on September 5 to 30 with an opening program conducted at the College of Arts and Letters Amphitheater.

BU awards outstanding personnel, achievers

Bicol University paid tribute to the outstanding contribution of the teaching, non-teaching, and alumni during the BU Exemplar Awards (BUEA) held at the Casablanca Convention Center, September 24.

Formerly known as the BU Awards, BUEA recognizes outstanding BU personnel and alumni who have brought honor to the university in the field of research, instruction, and in their respective fields. The event was one of the highlights of the month-long celebration of the Bicol Exemplar Awards/page 2 SCHOLARSHIP

LEADERSHIP

Bicol University Extension Service Center (BUESC) in partnership with the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) and the Local Government of Ligao City at Barangay Oma-oma, Ligao City conducted a Conservation Farming Villages (CFV) Summit on September 13, 2016.

The summit pooled together local officials, farmers and students as the participants visited the model farms of Brgy. Oma Oma, Ligao City to discuss the technology and practices of conservation farming.

With the theme, “Transforming Upland Communities through CFV,” the summit aims to share experiences in project implementation, collaboration and empowerment to rehabilitate the natural resource base; and showcase the Sloping Land Management (SLM) technology package through the Conservation Farming Villages Mode.

Exemplar Awards from p.1 University’s Founding Anniversary.

Prof. Adrian Aguilar, chair of the College of Arts and Letters Communication Department was hailed as the Most Outstanding Teacher.

Prof. Plutomeo Nieves was recognized as the Most Outstanding Researcher for his groundbreaking work in the field of fisheries resource management, aquaculture, and coastal resources management.

Dr. Raul G. Bradecina, SUC President of Partido State University was awarded as the Most Outstanding Alumnus. Bradecina also received the BU Alumni Relation Office Most Distinguished Award for his significant contribution in the field of Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries.

Other awardees of the BUARO Most Distinguished Awards are Glenn Barcelon for Media Communication; Cong. Christopher Co for Entrepreneurship, Business & Employment Creation; Cong. Alfredo Garbin Jr. for Good Governance & Public Service; Maria Venus

Raj for Corporate Social Responsibility; Dr. Diosdado San Antonio for Management & Human Resource Development; Dr. Zeus Salazar for Culture & Arts; BGEN Alex Tamondong for Peace and Social Cohesion; and Prof. Nelly Wadsworth for Education.

Meanwhile, a total of 138 BU personnel in the teaching and non-teaching received the Loyalty Award for their ten years of service in the university. BU likewise awarded 38 retirees and 48 researchers. Winners in the recent BU In-House Review of Finished Researches and Extension Projects were also recognized.

Graduates who garnered the top spots in their respective licensure examinations from 2015 to 2016 were also awarded in the said event.

Extension Service Center promotes nutrition, environmental protection

In order to promote nutrition and environmental protection, Bicol University Extension Service Center (BUESC) spearheaded a two-day seminar dubbed as “Training on Organic Urban Agriculture and Technology Demonstration” on September 22-23, 2016 at the BU East Campus.

According to Professor Ma. Corazon Naz, Head of the Development and Action Research Unit (DARU), the training included a lecture followed by a hands-on demonstration on land preparation, seed germination, organic pesticide and organic fertilizer preparation, and other related activities.

With regards to nutrition, the training aimed to increase food safety and security through the use of organic methods of producing vegetables and other crops.

This activity can help the family or group to have a supply of fresh vegetables for their consumption, if planted in recycled containers placed inside the house. Grown plants can be collected to form a communal garden that can supply the community with a fresh source of food.

BURDC heads orientation on High Performance Liquid Chromatograph usage

An orientation, seminar and training on the use of High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC) was spearheaded by the BU Research and Development Center – Regional Center for Food Safety and Quality Assurance on September 6-7 at the HERRC Amphitheatre, BU East campus.

The participants were lectured on the fundamentals and theory, hardware and software overview of the HPLC, and HPLC operation. A demo and hands-on operation of the equipment was also conducted during the event.

Medicine Day promotes Healthcare advocacy

On its third year of implementation, the Bicol University College of Medicine (BUCM) reopened another avenue for health and wellness through the Medicine Day celebration held September 23, at the BU Health Sciences Building.

The one-day activity included simultaneous free consultation and check-up from several volunteer doctors; booth visits from invited pharmaceutical companies; free acupuncture and moxibustion from seven acupuncturists; medstudent experience from participating BU students of different colleges; petcare experience; seminar on disaster risk reduction management, and a few indoor games.

KEY EVENTS Different activities were held during the month-long celebration such as the Extension In-House Review, Lecture Series on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, BU Pre-Service Teachers Congress, Sagumayon Summit, Conservation Farming Villages Summit, Forum on Green and Sustainable Academic Environment, and Regional Conference on Promoting World-Class Education.

The BU Voices Choir Competition, BU-CTE’s Teacher Day Celebration: A Celebration of Service, Agri-Techno Fair 2016, BU Olympics, Student Days, Forum on Strengthening Research and Linkage, and a

World-Class Education from p.4 BU Research and Development Director Ronnel Dioneda also gave a lecture on the status of research in higher and basic education sector using the Bicol region as its context. Parallel sessions, workshop on concept paper writing considering the identified gaps and needs based on the papers presented were also held during the first day.

On the second day, Dr. Ramon Fiel Abcede lectured on the “Challenges and Opportunities for Research in Basic Education.” Paper presentations anchored on the different thematic areas such as the Pedagogy and Perspectives in Learning and Teaching, Educational Change through Technologies, Curriculum and Innovation, Educational Policy, Leadership and Management Professional Concerns, Training and Development and Student Learning, Learner and Diversity and Life Long Learning were also tackled during the two-day conference.

Furthermore, as part of establishing international linkages, the global educator was invited to be the guest speaker on the forum on strengthening

research and linkages, held at BU Higher Education Regional Research Center, September 21.

The event aimed to enhance BU’s connections and research extension not just here in the Philippines but also in other countries. Veneti discussed about the “School Collaborative Projects: The Case of Cultural Loom, and Multilateral Collaboration” and she also gaved emphasis on “Communication-CooperationCreativity: Strengthening Personal, Interpersonal and Team Relations.”

Veneti was also invited in an activity dubbed “Cultural Discourse and Presenations” held at BU College of Nursing, September 23.

BUESC conducts 4th in-house extension review

The Bicol University Extension Service Center (BU-ESC) conducted the 4th InHouse Extension Review on September 6, 2016 at the HERRC Amphitheater, East Campus.

Six extension projects from different BU units such as the College of Education (CE), College of Industrial Technology (CIT), Gubat Campus (GC), and College of Nursing (CN) were presented during the event. Three awards were given namely Outstanding Extension Project, Outstanding Implementing College and Outstanding Extension Practitioner.

With a rating of 64.3%, Prof. Donato Milay from CE bagged the first place for the Outstanding Extension Project for his program titled “Capacity-Building for Formulating Participatory Disaster Risk Reduction Management Program through Sharing ‘Move Philippines’ in Albay.”

CN’s Prof. Rodel Niñofranco with his extension program dubbed “Community Assistance towards Resiliency and Empowerment,” ranked second with a grade of 63.7%. He was also awarded as the Outstanding Extension Practitioner garnering a grade of 65.2%.

Meanwhile, GC, with a grade of 66.3%, was proclaimed as the Outstanding Implementing College for their program “Harnessing Extension Advantage in Research and Development for the School and Communities (HEARDSC). CN with the same project that they competed for the outstanding extension project, placed second with a score of 59.7%.

the National Economic and Development Authority served as the chairman for the EV. Sixty-percent of the total rating came from the IV while the 40% came from the EV. The in-house review aimed to exercise excellence and competence in the field of discipline for extension undertakings; mentor and replicate best practices, approaches and strategies; provide inspiration and motivation to other extension practitioners; and instill leadership for the promotion of advocacy of programs or projects that brought impact to the community. In line with its vision to become a world-class university, a regional conference on promoting world-class education was held at Bicol University (BU) on September 16-17.
