Isang mapagpalaya at maaliwalas na Agosto para sa ating lahat!

Ang Buwan ng Wika ay hindi lamang isang pagdiriwang ng ating wikang pambansa, kundi pati na ang nilalarawan nitong kultura at pamana na sadyang sariling atin.

Sa pagdaan ng Agosto, nasaksihan natin kung gaano naging aktibo ang ating unibersidad sa pagdaos ng Buwan ng Wika. Iba’t ibang aktibidad ang ginanap sa atin na naglayong linangin, pahalagahan, at pagtibayin ang ating pagmamahal sa wikang Filipino at sa ating lahi.

Kasabay nito, mas pinagyabong din natin ang ating koneksyon sa mga unibersidad mula sa mga karatig bansa. Isa na rito ang Musashino Art University mula sa Japan na nagtayo ng Bamboo Dome sa ating commencement grounds.

Marami na tayong naabot ngayong buwan kabilang na dito ang pagtatag ng mga bagong ugnayang panlabas at ang pangunguna ng ating mga nagsipagtapos sa ginanap na Mining Engineering Board Exam.

Dulot nito, mas lalo pa nating pag-iibayuhin at pananatilihin ang kahusayang ating ipinamamalas nang sa gayon ay makamit natin ang ating bisyon na maging isang worldclass university.

3 BU grads top Mining Engineering national exam

Bicol University has once again proven that it is a powerhouse institution when it comes to national tests after notching three places in the August 2016 Mining Engineering Board Exam.

BU showcases technologies, inventions in national inventors’ gathering

To showcase the technologies and inventions developed by faculty members, BU participated in a national gathering of innovators and inventors in Pasay City on July 28-31.

Personnel from the BU Center for Technology Commercialization and Enterprise Development (BUCTCED) and Research and Development Center (BURDC) exhibited technologies and inventions on food, health,

automotive and engineering, and information technology at the SMX Convention Center.

Called the 2016 National Invention Contest and Exhibits, the event was sponsored by the DOST Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI)

Top Journalist from p.1 collaboration with the Bicol Organization of Neo-Journalists, the event aimed to encourage the students who want to pursue professional journalism in the near future. With the theme, “Shaping the Nation through Powerful Stories,” the event also aimed to inspire others to continue pursuing the truth and to help engage the public in nation building.

MBFI President Aniceto Sobrepena explained in a recorded video that the search is consistent with the more known recognition programs of Metrobank Foundation which aim to motivate the key pillars in the society to contribute to the goals of social development and nation building. For years, the foundation has recognized outstanding teachers, soldiers, and police officers, including artists and designers who excel in their respective fields.

Following the same tradition of MBFI that recognizes excellence among outstanding public servants, the JOY award “recognizes excellence in Philippine journalism. It celebrates and honors distinctive Filipino journalists from print, television, radio and online media whose excellent storytelling contributed to the development of the nation, and has influenced and inspired their colleagues and the broader media industry over the years.”

JOY AWARDEES In her lecture, Nancy Carvajal, former senior editor of Philippine Daily Inquirer, shared her experience when she wrote the most talked about government corruption in recent Philippine history - the ‘Pork Barrel Scam’.

Carvajal worked for PDI for more than 20 years, starting out as a secretary to the late PDI Editor-in-Chief Letty Jimenez-Magsanoc.

According to her, being a secretary gave her the opportunity to be at the frontline of news decisions which enabled her to develop

with the theme “Inventions and Innovations for One Nation.”

The activity aimed to showcase the latest developed technologies and innovations; facilitate the commercialization of technologies; generate investment and sales; and make it an avenue for business linkages among entrepreneurs, inventors, and other stakeholders.

Different inventors’ organizations, academic institutions, government agencies, and private businesses nationwide participated in the exhibition.

Present were DOST Secretary Fortunato T. De la Peña, DOST Undersecretary Dr. Rowena Cristina L. Guevara, TAPI Director Edgar I. Garcia, and Philippine Intellectual Property Office Director-General Atty.

her instinct on what constitutes a big story.

Carvajal ended her talk by sharing tips on how to handle anomalies, high level corruption, police and investigative stories, and how to break the limits of in-depth news gathering.

Maria Teresa ‘Maritess’ Vitug, Rappler.com’s Editor at Large, also shared her experiences on how she handled comprehensive reports on what she referred to as the ‘dark room’ of the Philippine government – the Supreme Court (SC). She said she became interested in the judiciary and the SC because of its very secretive but powerful approach to the public.

Vitug bared that one of the most challenging moments in her life as a journalist was when an SC justice filed a libel case against her because of her book “Shadow of Doubt.” Vitug also encouraged the students to adhere to the core journalism principles as these should guide them in the conduct of the profession.

Meanwhile, Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism Vice Chairman and co-Founder and GMA Network Anchor Howie Severino, focused his lecture on the ‘millennials.’ He said that today’s young journalism practitioners are afforded with so many choices unlike their generation because they now have the technology. Severino then encouraged the students to use today’s technology to help society.

In 2001, MBFI, together with the Asian Institute for Journalism and Communication (AIJC), named Sheila Coronel, Jessica Soho and Armando Malay as awardees in the Search for Outstanding Journalists (SOJ). It was re-launched in 2013 as the Search for JOY, honoring Malou Mangahas, Jiggy Manicad, and Jarius Bondoc for their powerful stories that contributed to the development of the nation. This was the first time that the BUCTCED joined a national event and showcased the university’s technologies developed by the faculty. A total of P31,173 was earned by BU from the sale of products.

“I am happy that there were interesting feedback on our inventions in automotive and information technologies. Positive comments came from researchers, inventors, students, professors, guests, and co-exhibitors,” said BUCTCED Director Christopher O. Pacardo.

Paul Orpiada, founder of Karaw Craftventures and Gikan Collective, shared his expertise on the organizational design of start-ups. Zaira Bataller, BURDC technical staff member, lectured on intellectual property rights.

Engr. Christopher O. Pacardo, BUCTCED Director, said, “We are very eager in having activities such as this because BUCTCED will be granting P400,000 seed capital to six promising start-ups from faculty-researchers and inventors. From there, we are hoping to see a rather impressive capital growth and ROI (return on investments). Activities like this are being done, so that when faculty members enter the market, they already know what to expect, what to do, and how to think like an entrepreneur.”

Meanwhile, BURDC Associate Director Dr. Lester Narvaez encouraged the faculty to engage in meaningful research and development activities to aid BU in achieving its vision of becoming a world-class university.

BU inks MOA with LGU Ligao, Barangay Herrera on watershed management

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed between the Bicol University College of Agriculture and Forestry (BUCAF) and the Local Government Unit of Ligao City and Barangay Herrera of Ligao for the continued implementation of the watershed management project in the Bicol Region on August 11.

The event culminated with the building of “Paradise Dome,” a three dimensional bamboo structure designed

by Prof. Bando.

According to Prof.

Bando, one of the objectives of the bamboo dome design is to provide a low cost temporary emergency shelter in times of disaster and calamity. It also aims to inspire other designers to

create similar designs made with local materials.

The project also intends to develop a data-integration and information management system that synthesizes data from the watershed networks in realtime spatial estimates of water balance, sediment yield, flood and landslide risks; build up capacity of LGU Ligao, Barangay Herrera, and BUCAF and other local stakeholders for watershed monitoring and for the use of watershed databases in planning and decision making; and generate data and information that will be useful in local policy development.

As stipulated in the MOA, BU through BUCAF shall train partner LGU Environment and Natural Resources (ENRO) staff in the establishment of equipment in strategic sites, as well as in data gathering, analysis and interpretation; work closely with partner LGU Ligao and Brgy.

Herrera in the establishment of Watershed Management Information System; develop and/or validate models and tools on hydrology, biodiversity and land allocation; and develop a data-integration and information-management system that synthesizes data into real-

time special estimates of water balance, sediment yield, flood and landslide risks.

As the LGU’s partner university, BU also needs to conduct selected studies on the watersheds, develop a culture of research among graduate and undergraduate students in watershed management and allied fields, take responsibility in the financial management of the project, and take responsibility in providing the LGU Ligao and Brgy. Herrera the results and outputs of the program.

LGU Ligao, on the other hand is mandated to participate in capability building that will be sponsored by the project through BU; allow or provide a contiguous area in two sites of around two hectares each in the watershed area where biodiversity monitoring and erosion plots will be established and where data gathering instruments such as microclimate system, sap flow meter and infiltrometer and other monitoring equipment will be established or installed; assign LGU – ENRO Staff to work with BU Project Staff; Act as a repository of data or information at LGU level; and work closely MOA with Ligao/page 4

Under the Executive Order 318 of 2004, LGU Ligao is mandated to formulate and implement its Forest Land Use Plan using the Watershed Approach.

The project is beneficial to both LGU Ligao and Brgy.

Herrera as this will provide them fresh database and information on watershed, and knowledge on innovative tools that will facilitate and improve decision making on suitable local statutes and policies.

Such knowledge is useful in preparation of programs, projects or activities that will achieve multiple watershed management objectives.

According to Department of Energy and Environmental Protection of Connecticut, watershed management is a term used to describe the process of implementing land use practices and water management practices to protect and improve the quality of the water and other natural resources within a watershed by managing the use of those land and water resources in a comprehensive manner. BUCTCED holds start-up seminar for BU inventors

The Bicol University Center for Technology Commercialization and Enterprise Development (BUCTCED) spearheaded a two-day seminar-workshop for BU inventors dubbed “Start Up Seminar for BU Inventors: Learning the Start Up Essentials and Preparing a Commercialization Proposal.”

The said activity was held on July 26-27 at the HERCC Amphitheater, BU East Campus.

Guided by the “Mind to Market” principle, the activity’s main aim was to teach the faculty-inventors how the products of their research and development undertakings can penetrate the market and yield revenues.

According to BU Research and Development Center (BURDC) Director Ronnel R. Dioneda, “It is of great importance that these inventors be equipped with the know-hows on the basics of business.

I expect that the seminar-workshop will result in a local landscape of spin-offs, start-ups, commercialization, and licensing agreements.”
