The Orange County Chamber of Commerce leads the way in creating and supporting an environment in which business will succeed and the quality of life is enhanced.

County, Chamber embark on ‘buy local’ initiative A new “buy local” initiative was announced at a July 13 press conference held by Orange County Government and the Orange County Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber Business Center in Montgomery. Each year, Orange County purchases approximately $233 million in goods and services. The new program will give Chamber members improved access to RFPs (Request for Proposals) and bid requests for products and services purchased by County Government. “This unique program is the latest in the Chamber’s efforts to encourage people to do business locally,” said Dr. John D’Ambrosio, Chamber President. “We are very fortunate that County Executive Ed Diana and the Department of General Services are 100% behind the idea. Commissioner Jim Burpoe and his staff have gone out of their way to develop a program that directly benefits the local business community, and our members will benefit enormously.” County Executive Diana added, “Like the Chamber of Commerce, Orange County Government is committed to economic development and supporting the success of the businesses in our community. When business is conducted between local companies, 68 cents of every dollar spent stays within the community. That’s good news for the vendors and good news for the people who live here. Through our Buy Local initiative we hope to keep as much as possible of the County’s significant buying potential within the County.” “As the economy continues to lag, it behooves us as elected officials to do whatever we can to help stimulate business for local companies,” said Orange County Legislator Patrick Berardinelli, Sr., Chairman of the Legislature’s Education

“This county understands the needs of business,” said Chamber President Dr. John D’Ambrosio.

Chamber members are invited to a special seminar that will explain all the details of the program on Tuesday, August 16 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. in the auditorium at the spectacular new Emergency Services Center at 61/2 Station Road in Goshen. Commissioner Burpoe and other representatives of County government will explain how

Chamber members can find out what products and services are needed, as well as the best ways to go about submitting proposals to acquire the business. The initiative will also include a special

and Economic Development Committee. “The County’s ‘Buy Local’ initiative will be a win-win for all who take time to learn more about it and get involved.”

Chairman’s Message On June 14, 2011, I met Dave for lunch at Cosimo’s in Newburgh. I had asked him to meet with me on a nonChamber related topic. You know Dave, he said yes. I arrived and found him sitting at the table smiling as usual. We greeted each other, ordered and relaxed into lunch. Of course, we spent a few moments talking about Chamber stuff; I guess that’s expected between Chairman and Chairmanelect. We spent some time joking on how slowly or quickly the Johnson time passes as Chair and about his expectations and what he felt it was important to remember when he was Chair. It was something that he had said at our last Board meeting, the need to work closely with the Chair-elect, as Dave and I had done. Then I told him one of the reasons I wanted to meet with him. I wanted to ask him to be one of my mentors. You know Dave, he said yes. He said it was the first time he could remember someone outside the banking field asking him to be a mentor. We started talking and sharing. I left there knowing that I had found a different type of mentor. I have several mentors. But none like I knew Dave would be. I had worked with him through my chairmanship of the Orange County Chamber Board of Directors. He showed me how to be kinder and gentler and still get what we needed to get done. He helped smooth my edges. Sometimes at a meeting when I had the urge to get something done quickly, I would lean over and ask his viewpoint. His wellspoken words calmed me right down. He had a way of helping you see a better course of action, correction, without ever feeling that you were corrected. In the last few weeks, I have come to realize just how fortunate I was to have worked so closely with Dave for almost two years. I truly believe I will probably never find a mentor to replace him. I also believe that the only way I can truly show how much I appreciated his lessons is by my continuing to take the time to cultivate the seeds of wisdom he planted within me. We miss you Dave. You were and will always be “one of a kind.” Donna Johnson Chairman of the Board

President’s Message

Difficult days The Orange County family lost some truly fine individuals over the course of the past few weeks. Dave Cocks, Bill Devitt, Ray Boyea and Bill Myers not only were stars in their respective professions, generous to a fault and wonderful family men, they were pillars of the business community. While the circumstances of each of their passing were different, all four gentlemen left us too soon and will be enormously missed. Most of us have spent considerable

hours recently thinking about Dave, Bill, Ray and Bill, and remembering the impact that each of them had in so many different ways and on so many different people. While these have been difficult days, they have taught us that life is short, and that each and every day must be truly valued. We’ve learned how important it is to treasure the time that we spend

with one another, with the ones we love, and take nothing for granted. We miss Dave Cocks and Bill Devitt and Ray Boyea and Bill Myers. We honor their legacies. But most of all, we thank them for helping us to better understand what’s really important in life. John A. D’Ambrosio, Ed.D. President

In memoriam

In March 2011, Dave Cocks joined Chamber President John D’Ambrosio for a taping of “Orange Chamber Chat” on Clear Channel Radio. The Orange County community was shocked and deeply saddened when Walden Savings Bank President Dave Cocks passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 19 at the age of 53. Dave was to become Chairman of the Chamber Board on October 1 and had spent many years working tirelessly on behalf of this organization….and so many

others in the region. Recipient of scores of awards and honors, Dave had also been selected by Mount Saint Mary College to receive its prestigious Joseph A. Bonura Award for Leadership Excellence in December (Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union was also selected for the award, but has graciously stepped aside to shine a single

light on Dave). The college will proceed with the event as a “special night focusing solely on celebrating the life and legacy of David.” Dave Cocks’ life was truly one to be celebrated. His contributions of time, talent, finances, good humor and great energy left a legacy that will likely never be matched.

Last year’s “Dance with the Chamber Stars” was such a great event that six sponsors have already returned to support this year’s dance, to be held at Mount Saint Mary College’s Hudson Hall on Friday evening, September 23. DeRienzo & Rossi, C.P.A.s and Eastern Alloys are Silver Sponsors, and Valuation Consultants, Milt Ritter Insurance, William A. Smith & Son and Croll Productive Synergy are Orange Sponsors. Everyone is invited to this affordable evening of fun, food and drinks, music and dancing, but we’re going to highlight a few selected Chamber dancing stars. These folks will show their stuff doing the tango, salsa, waltz,

hustle and who knows what else? The dancers will be there courtesy of Strictly Ballroom and Tango Under the Tent. Not only that, anyone who arrives at 6:00 p.m. will receive a free dance lesson. Music will be provided by DMU Music. Admission for the dance, at only $25 per person, includes a buffet with pasta bar, salads, beer, wine, soda, dessert and coffee. Make your reservation now by visiting www.orangeny.com or calling Roseann at 457-9700. Space is limited.
