YOUR GUIDE TO THE PLANNER Thanks, as always, to the businesses listed here for supporting the July issue of the Broadstairs Planner. Without this continued support it would be impossible to provide free listings for those promoting local activities and events. These local independent businesses are an integral part of the ’Broadstairs Scene’ and as such also need the support and custom of the local community.

St Peter- in-Thanet Village Fête 04 Jul 2015 St Peter-in-Thanet will hold their Village Fête on Saturday 4th July 2014 across the Church Halls and St Peter’s Village Green from 10.30 – 15.30. Funds raised will go towards the tower and church building fund. St Peter-in-Thanet are delighted to announce that the fête will again feature a Fun Dog Show from 11am – 12.30pm. With categories from the best rescued or rehomed dog to the one with the waggiest tail, it’s sure to be a showcase of canine cuteness! A new feature for this year’s show will be a Fancy Dress competition that will take place at 2pm. In recognition of the Fête sharing a date with US Independence Day, the theme for the fancy dress will be ‘USA’. This should provide plenty of scope for people to get creative for what’s certain to be a fun addition to the day’s activities. The fancy dress will be judged in two groups – adults and children (under 16s). Of course there will be the usual fête favourites including the cake, plants and produce stalls alongside the tombola, grand raffle and bric-a-brac. For the children there will be a toy stall and face painting together with a wide selection of games and crafts. Fresh food and drinks will be available all day at the Pit Stop Café and in the afternoon cream teas can be purchased. With something for all the family it’s sure to be a great day out. LIVING IN BROADSTAIRS

Cemanthe McKenzie, behind the Facebook groups : Living in Broadstairs and the Local Shoppers community group keeps us up to date with this month’s Local Shoppers Expedition as well as a snap shot of the living in Broadstairs Group GW

Indoor Boot Sale 12noon—3pm April 4th - Saturday Queens Road Baptist Church

The Local Shoppers are a group who meet once a month at a pre-arranged local shop. They enter the shop and spend up to £10, there by supporting local businesses whilst enjoying a ‘social’ shop. If you'd like to join us, please do join the Local Shoppers community group on www.facebook.com/groups/BroadstairsLocalShoppers

next meeting July 4th - 12 noon Summer is upon us finally, so this month's Local Shoppers is a typical British seaside excursion, with shopping at the Blue Anchor Beach Shop, and then fish and chips from Seafarers on the beach. Bring family and friends and kids and let's build sandcastles and celebrate our summer days...short as they are. ……………………………………………………………….. I set up the Living in Broadstairs group to inspire community and some recent events have shown this to be in action. You know the cats in the cat park? Well, recently someone posted into the group that the little multi-coloured one might be ill, so a few of us popped down to the park to check on her. People provided out of hours Vet numbers, and rallied around with advice. It's also a place where we share the great things that happen in the community and photos that we take of the area we love. Join us!

High Street News

Some of you may have noticed, in your recent high street travels, the slow and mysterious unveiling of a new high street ‘shop’. The windows, tantalisingly covered with news papers , but with a couple of peep holes for the very curious, will have been stripped, revealing a magical new world of magical items, wands, tricks and cards, all in time for the Grand opening of Wormwold’s Emporium of Magic on the July 4th & 5th weekend. Named after the famous Wizard, Magnus Wormwold, (pictured on the right) who regularly makes visits on selected dates, it is sure to be a fascinating experience for all aspiring magicians. Wormwold's stock magic tricks for all abilities as well as hand crafted magic wands, fitted and tested by their own Wandsman! They also stock a large range of playing cards and many other magical items. See magic performed before your eyes by their resident Magicians and join their Magic Clubs. VEGAN NIGHT - July 10th 7pm "Second Friday of Every Month: Vegan Night, Be There or Be Square!" The Intolerant Wife Café is ‘catering’ to those who enjoy a vegan lifestyle - as well as those who just like good food, well prepared - to a popular evening exclusively dedicated to vegan food with a specially prepared menu every month. The three courses use fresh local produce wherever possible and are cooked on the day itself. Those who come include foodies who aren't vegan themselves, but enjoy good food, and those who come as far away as Canterbury and the Medway towns. A well-liked combination at the last Vegan Night were the Pea and Watercress Soup, the Spiced Lentil and Vegetable Pie (which was gluten free as well), and Affogato. For those who don't know, Affogato is an Italian dessert with espresso coffee and gelato. Our version had pitted black cherries, maple & pecan dairy-free ice cream, cherry puree, coffee and optional shot of brandy.! Booking is essential, (£10 deposit)

‘Two

Balds and A Blonde’

Sarah Thorne Theatre

This local three piece acoustic band have developed quite a following since their last visit to the Sarah Thorne. Comprising husband-and-wife duo Angie and Kev Hughes and singer-songwriter Rod Dexter, the acoustic trio play a rich range of music, from country and folk to rock and pop. Their blend of songs from the 60’s to the here and now always finds something that the audience love. They particularly enjoy taking a well-known song and giving it their own twist. They have performed locally in East Kent over the last twelve months as well as in Scotland and Germany. ‘Two Balds and A Blond’ also like their audience to sing with them; ‘we play music we love and hope that others love it too’ Sarah Thorne Theatre Saturday 4th July 7:30pm

WINING and…. Railway systems linking Paris to the rest of France in the late 19th century brought an influx of inexpensive wines from the Midi, especially from Languedoc, which undercut Chablis’ prime position in the Parisian market. Powdery mildew and phylloxera were soon to follow and the ravished vineyard area shrank until it reached a mere 500 hectares in the mid 1950s.

This Month... CHABLIS! Lyn Beckett The Bottleneck Broadstairs Often described by critics as the “purest” expression of the Chardonnay grape, Chablis, solely produced from Chardonnay, is one of the best known and most widely emulated wines in the world. Situated in the northern part of Burgundy, Chablis produces wines that are dry and minerally and usually unoaked with a marked acidity and, from the best producers, a pristine purity. This purity and minerality sets Chablis apart not only from the other great white burgundies of the more southerly Côte d’Or but also from the other great Chardonnays of the world. As is the case with many other parts of France, vines were probably first planted in Chablis by the Romans. It was not until the Middle Ages, however, that the Cistercian monks of the nearby abbey of Pontigny firmly established viticulture as an integral part of the local rural economy. Chablis’ location on the banks of the river Yonne gave easy access to the Seine, thus ensuring the region a near monopoly with the lucrative Parisian market.. In the 17th century the wines began to be exported to England and by the 19th century there were 40,000 hectares planted with vines.

The region’s fortunes began to change with the advent of technological advances in the 1960s. Vineyard frost protection minimised the risk and costs associated with vintages and climate in this northerly region, while better winemaking accentuated the minerally character of Chablis. By 2004, a total of 4,260 hectares were planted around the town of Chablis and 19 other villages and hamlets in the département of the Yonne. Chablis’ climate is continental, with no maritime in the spring, giving the region very long, cold, harsh winters and summers which are often very hot. Frost in the spring is a constant hazard, the risk can last well into May. . If conditions are too wet and cold, wines can be overly high in acid and lacking in fruit. Conversely, if a vintage is too hot, fat, flabby wines lacking in acidity and definition can be produced, lacking Chablis’ trademark crispness. The climate dictates the style, but the soil of the region is also a key factor. Geologically speaking Chablis lies on the edge of the Paris basin, where the rocks date back to the Upper Jurassic age, some 180 million years ago.

The French call this agrilo-calcaire, essentially a mixture of limestone and clay containing a multitude of tiny fossilised shells. Chablis’ Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards are planted predominantly on this Kimmerdigean soil which imparts a minerality and flintiness to the wines. Chablis AC and Petit Chablis AC vineyards are planted on younger soils known as Portlandien, similar in terms of structure and limestone content to Kimmeridgean, but not deemed to give as much finesse to the wines. A decade of particularly damaging frost conditions in the 1950s resulted in developments taking place in order to combat this annual climatic hazard. Heater systems, known as smudge pots were put into vineyards, thereby reducing the risk of frost. The disadvantages of smudge pots are their expense, that they are not environmentally friendly, and they are unsightly in the Vineyard. . A more commonly used alternative is aspersion, a sprinkler system sprays the vines with water when the temperature falls below freezing. The water freezes, forming a protective layer of ice that functions like an igloo retaining heat within the vine.

Both systems have greatly reduced the damage caused by frost. With summer on it’s way now is The Dorset village of Kimmerdige in the south-west the time that Chablis reigns supreme “alfresco of England lies on the other side of this basin, giving its name to the particular geological formation eating” & a wealth of fresh fish demand Chablis! and period known as ‘Kimmeridgean’. JULY RECIPE - Upside down apple & cinnamon tart INGREDIENTS      

75g (3oz) butter 175g (6oz) caster sugar 1tbsp lemon juice 1tsp ground cinnamon 4 Royal Gala apples, peeled, cored and each cut into thick slices 350g (12oz) puff pastry

A popular dessert in France where it is known as Tarte Tatin, this needs little accompaniment beyond maybe a scoop of vanilla ice cream or créme fraîche. Serve the tart as soon as you´ve turned it out.

1. Melt the butter in a frying pan and gradually stir in the caster sugar. Heat gently until the sugar melts, stirring occasionally, then continue to cook until golden brown and caramelised. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the lemon juice and cinnamon. 2. Tip the caramelised mixture into a 20-23cm (8-9in) flan dish - not loosebottomed - and tilt the dish so it coats the base. Leave to cool.

TIPS Leaving the tart for 5 minutes after it comes out of the oven gives it time to firm up and makes it easier to turn out

3. Preheat the oven to 200ºC/400ºF/Gas mark 6. Lay the apples in the dish in concentric circles, butting them up against each other but not overlapping the slices. 4. Roll out the pastry on a floured board to a circle large enough to fit over the apples, trimming as necessary and tucking the pastry edges down the sides between the apples and the dish. 5. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown. Remove from the oven and leave to stand for 5 minutes before placing a serving plate on top of the dish and turning out the tart on to it.

Days Out - Romney Marsh - ‘see and do’ 01797 36 9487 Here is a list of attractions in and around the Romney Marsh area. For more information phone 01797 36 94 87. Please note that the family day poster on the following page includes this phone number but with an extra 3, so the above number is correct. You can also visit the following site www.theromneymarsh.net/see&do Action Water sports Action Water sports, located on a purpose built, freshwater lake in Lydd on Romney Marsh, offers water skiing, wakeboarding, barefoot and jet skiing. Astronomy The Romney Marsh is one of the country's best areas for stargazing due to its wide horizons and lack of light pollution. Romney Marsh juts out into the English Channel and is often cloud free; you can often see clouds building up further inland whilst the sky here remains clear. Due to the low population density there is little light pollution from local sources. Inland and away from the coastal strip the sky at night can be really good for astronomy. The Milky Way can be seen easily along with distant objects such as galaxies and star clusters. Bird Watching Romney Marsh is an excellent place for seeing and watching birds. The Marshes large expanses of countryside criss crossed with dykes, farmland, lakes, coastline, sea and Dungeness Point, attract a large variety of birds. The coastline has formed over the past 5,000 years and continues to evolve. Wetlands extend across the area with shingle beaches, saltmarsh, saline lagoons, grazing marsh, gravel pits and intertidal mud and sand flats. Dungeness The stark wild beauty and distinctive character of this shingle desert engenders feelings of awe, wonder and curiosity. Dungeness lies on a headland on the south Kent coast formed largely of a shingle beach in the form of a foreland, between New Romney, Lydd and Camber on Romney Marsh. It shelters a large area of the low-lying land Romney Marsh. Greatstone Lakes Greatstone Lakes are located to the west of the village of Greatstone. The two lakes, known as the north and south lakes, are man made in so far as they are old gravel pits. In the 1970s the extraction of the gravel on the now nature reserve was an important industry, supplying gravel for sea defences and road building, amongst other things. The Sand Dunes at Greatstone The sand dunes at Greatstone are typical coastal sand dunes. Sand dunes are small ridges or hills of sand found at the top of a beach, above the usual maximum reach of the waves. The dunes at Greatstone run parallel to the coastline, separating the beach and sea from the land, along almost the whole length of Greatstone. Haguelands Haguelands Village offers fun for the whole family. Come along any day of the year and you’ll always find something to do. Meet the Alpacas, take cookery classes, ride on a tractor trailer around the farm, sample delicious fresh Kent produce in the Bistro, browse our fantastic Craft Fair, sample any of our amazing local produce from our extensive Farm Shop Greatstone Beach Greatstone beach, on the south east coast of the Marsh, is one of the finest land yachting sites in the UK, with a long, wide stretch of beautiful flat sand that gives you all the space you need. Lydd Kart Circuit Lydd Kart Circuit has a 1040m, MSA licensed track and offers karting for children from 4 years old (subject to height restrictions) Lydd Speedway Lydd Speedway is located off the B2075 between Lydd and New Romney. It is a 205m smooth track with banked up corners. They are open every Sunday April to October from noon to 5pm. You have to be a member to ride but you can join on the day and the fees are reasonable.

Opening Times Romney Marsh Visitor Centre: Thursday to Sunday 10.00am - 4.00pm.

GARDENING TIPS FOR JULY GENERAL TASKS & GARDEN MAINTENANCE

Water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often this encourages plants to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface. Remember, though, that containers and hanging baskets need watering every day and sometimes even twice a day if it is hot and windy. For recently planted large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour. The same goes for established plants in very dry periods - pay particular attention to camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas which will abort next season’s flowers if they get too dry. Mulch around the roots when moist to help avoid this. Recently planted hedges are best watered with a trickle hose (a length of old hose punctured with little holes) left running for an hour or so.

The key to successful planting, whether it be a shrub, tree, perennial or bedding plant is to water in well. Soak the rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water well with a watering can this will give the plant a huge advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface. Hoe beds and borders to get rid of annual weeds, like bitter cress and chickweed. If it’s dry, attack perennial weeds like ground elder and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves and trail tips of bindweed into jam jars full of the same. Remember systemic weed killers are indiscriminate and will kill anything they contact. If you don’t have time to do this, at least cut the culprits down to prevent them from setting seed.

Ensure trees or shrubs planted in the last couple of years on lawns or in areas of rough grass have a circle of clear earth around them - this Keep your pond topped up with fresh water - a build up of algae in warm weather can be toxic, if not fatal, for animals. must be kept clear or grass will prevent essential moisture getting through. Mulching with bark or compost will help. Pests love warm weather, so be on your guard! Caterpillar and aphid infestations can be dealt with by hand if caught early enough, but should the situation career out of control you will Water is a precious commodity - instigate good practices such as have to resort to insecticides or grin and bear it! Greenfly and using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is neither too dirty, greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect rainwater in butts blackfly especially love the heat and don’t forget aphids and other (available from the centre) and investigate ways to recycle water for sap-sucking insects can transmit viruses so don’t give in to the your irrigation. Avoid using tap water for lime-hating plants such as sympathy vote. Try to attract beneficial insects by growing a wide variety of plants - ladybirds and their larvae are camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas - they will not thank you for consummate aphid predators, as are lacewings and it! even wasps.

ST PETERS VILLAGE TOURS IN JULY Attend the flagship award winning Village Tour and meet many costumed characters from past centuries along with some surprises along the way! During the tour you will see the flint built church and find out a little more about its long history. You will hear of conditions in the workhouse, the Newbolts breakfast concerts for hundreds of fashionable people, the tower used in the Napoleonic wars, famous (and infamous) local residents and our ancient seat of local government for the area. The tour is conducted in 5 groups of 10 visitors and covers less than a mile of flat walking, but does involve standing for a number of 5 minute presentations. It includes a break for tea or coffee (although no break on evening tours, or inclement weather tours). You are advised to allow two and a half hours for your tour. In very inclement weather we provide an Inclement weather routine. Access for visitors with disabilities. Children are very welcome on our tour. We would however, suggest a minimum age of 10 years to fully appreciate the experience. At the end of the tour you are invited to contribute towards our costs which average £4 per adult. After the tour light lunches and cream teas can be made available in the Red Lion, opposite the Church, by calling Kim on 01843 600895. Refreshments on the tour are optional at a cost of £1.
