Dear Members,
May is a time for reflection and gratitude, and it also has another important public holiday on 1 st May. Labour Day is a moment to pause and recognise the dedication and hard work of those who make our Club the welcoming place it is. On behalf of the Main Committee and all our members, I would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to every member of our team from our front-of-house staff and to those working quietly behind the scenes.
In the spirit of giving back, we are delighted to host a Charity Car Wash on 3 rd May, from 10am to 5pm, at the Club’s main car park area. This special event will see our Main Committee members and Club staff roll up their sleeves to wash members’ cars, with all proceeds going to the Singapore Children’s Society, a cause very close to our hearts. We warmly invite you to bring your car along and show your support. It promises to be a fun and meaningful day, and every contribution will go directly towards making a difference in the lives of children and families in need.
We have renovations taking place on the second floor of the main building namely the Elizabeth Suite and Stuart Room. They are undergoing a refresh to upgrade the interior design and most importantly all the audio-visual capabilities. This will continue to keep these spaces attractive for both member and corporate events. We are also undertaking upgrading events on the Club Management floor. We are planning that these developments will be complete by end of Q2 2026.
I also wish to announce that Kenny Cowgill has made the decision [for personal reasons] to step down from his roles as Vice President, of the Club and as Chair of the Development Committee. Kenny has made an enormous contribution to the Club with a sense of duty and dedication and on behalf of my colleagues on the Main Committee, I wish to thank Kenny for his contributions and wish him all the very best for the future.
I encourage you to explore our upcoming events programme and make the most of our events and facilities, as the weeks ahead promise plenty of memorable moments.

Dear Members,
May marks a very special milestone for me personally, as it was in May 2025 that I arrived in Singapore to begin my role at The British Club. It is quite remarkable how quickly the past year has flown by and just how much has been achieved in that time. Looking back, it has been a year filled with wonderful moments, meaningful connections, and great progress across the Club.
As I move into my second year, I now have the benefit of seeing the Club through a full calendar cycle, which brings with it clarity, perspective, and excitement for what lies ahead. With this insight, I am looking forward to introducing key enhancements and creating new and improved member experiences over the coming year, always with the aim of strengthening the sense of community and enjoyment that makes our Club so special.
I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has welcomed me so warmly and supported me throughout my first year. From our Committee Members and Life Members to our Club Sections and our wonderfully diverse membership base, you are the heart of The British Club. It is your engagement, passion, and camaraderie that continue to shape such a vibrant and inclusive community, and I am truly grateful to be part of it.
This month also sees an exciting development with the relaunch of our refurbished Stuart Room and Elizabeth Suites. These refreshed spaces reflect our commitment to continual improvement and modernisation, while retaining the character and charm members value so highly. Our team will be hosting a series of events to showcase the new décor, upgraded facilities, and the state of the art functionality now available, and I encourage members to come along and experience these spaces firsthand.
I look forward to seeing many of you around the Club in the coming weeks and months, whether at our events, in our refreshed function spaces, or simply enjoying all that the Club has to offer. Thank you once again for making my first year such a memorable one. I am excited for what lies ahead as we continue this journey together.

HOW THE AUTUMN BUDGET IMPACTS UK EXPATS
In this article Martin Wright outlines the key changes that could affect UK nationals living abroad and the way you structure your finances.
Following weeks of speculation and an early leak of the Office for Budget Responsibility’s findings, Chancellor Rachel Reeves delivered the 2025 Budget on 26 November 2025, describing it as a set of “fair and necessary choices” to support the government’s agenda for change. The measures are not expected to take effect until April 2026 at the earliest and while the UK Autumn Budget may not apply to you directly, those with UK assets or any exposure to the UK tax system could be impacted by certain measures. We therefore consider it important to keep you updated.
One of the measures to come into effect is the removal of access to pay voluntary Class 2 NICs abroad and increase the initial residency or contributions requirement to pay voluntary NICs outside of the UK to 10 years. For some expats, changes to National Insurance contributions announced in the Autumn Budget are unlikely to have a direct impact whilst they remain non-resident. However, National Insurance remains an important consideration for those who retain UK employment ties, are working overseas temporarily, or are considering a future return to the UK.
Although you will no longer be able to contribute using the cheaper class 2 voluntary contributions from April 2026, you may be able to pay class 3 contributions if you have spent more than 10 years outside of the UK. You should therefore consider topping up Class 2 contributions whilst you have the ability to do so, and review your long-term State Pension entitlement to consider what future funding may be required to maximise your State Pension income in retirement.
Changes to Property Tax may be of particular interest for those with property remaining in the UK. For clients living overseas, UK rental income remains taxable in the UK
regardless of tax residence. The introduction of separate, higher UK tax rates for property income, 22% (basic), 42% (higher) and 47% (additional) from 6 April 2027 means higher tax bills on UK rental income. If you currently pay Income Tax on your UK property profits at 20%, 40% or 45%, each band will rise by 2–3%. This means your net rental income will fall, unless rents rise or costs change.
The Non-residents’ rate determination stays tied to UK taxable income and means that even as a non-UK resident, your tax band is still based on your UK-source income only. If your UK rental profits push you into the higher-rate band, you’ll face the new 42% rate. Those with significant rental portfolios or high UK income could fall into the new 47% additional rate. Mansion Tax is another concern for many homeowners – including those living abroad with property in the UK. A High Value Council Tax Surcharge (HVCTS) will be coming into effect in April 2028. It is based on property value, not purchase price and will be applied as so:
Property value (England)Annual surcharge (HVCTS)
£2.0 m – £2.5 m£2,500
£2.5 m – £3.5 m£3,500
£3.5 m – £5.0 m£5,000
£5.0 m and above £7,500
Under the new rules, this could have significant implications for non-resident landlords and international property investors. As stated above, from April 2027, new separate tax rates will be adopted and this change applies to income from UK property wherever you are resident, thus directly reducing the rental yields received. Furthermore, if you’re a high-net-worth expat with a UK home valued above 2 million GBP, the introduction of the new annual High Value Council Tax surcharge represents a notable increase in holding costs which could be 2,500 GBP, but as high as 7,500 GBP for homes valued above 5 million GBP.
These changes could have significant impact in terms of the ongoing costs of holding UK property and you should therefore consider your ownership structures for property and how this will impact your immediate expenditure, income and long- term personal cash flow planning.
Under the new rules announced last month, if you’ve spent 10 out of the last 20 years living in the UK for tax purposes, you’ll be treated as a long-term resident. This means that once you fall into that category, the UK can charge Inheritance Tax on everything you own worldwide, not just the assets you hold in the UK. This is a significant change from a domicile based IHT system to a residency-based system. This means that if you are a long term expat who is planning a return to the UK, you will need to consider the timing of your relocation back to the UK, as this could impact your long-term non-resident status, particularly if you have spent close to 10 out of the last 20 years outside of the UK for tax purposes.
You will also need to consider that worldwide assets (not just UK) could then be brought under the scope of UK IHT if you satisfy the long-term UK resident test, which may not have been the case in the past whilst you were deemed non-resident.
From April 2027, if you’re under 65 you’ll only be able to put £12,000 a year into a Cash ISA. If you want to use your full £20,000 ISA allowance, the remaining £8,000 must be put into a Stocks & Shares ISA.
Essentially, many will be nudged towards investing rather than keeping everything in cash. Again, depending on how long you have lived outside of the UK, the rules will differ. Although you may keep any ISA you originally hold, if you become a nonUK tax resident, you’re no longer qualified to put money into UK ISAs.
As a resident abroad, ISAs could also be viewed as foreign investment accounts and be taxed at the local rate, meaning their initial tax-free benefits are no longer so.
Although this won’t impact non-residents on a day-to-day
basis because you can’t contribute to new ISAs, it is essential that you plan before returning to the UK.
For example, your spouse or partner may be a UK resident in which case you should consider maximising their contributions whilst they can still contribute.
You should also consider how to maximise contributions to other tax-efficient wrappers sooner rather than later, and manage gains in other assets such as property, pensions or General Investment Accounts whilst nonresident accordingly so that you have a plan in place to draw income and capital tax-efficiently when you return.
Our team of professionals are here to support you as a UK expat and despite future changes, it is our goal to keep your financial plan on track. There is time to prepare and make any changes needed before the above measures come into effect, so open communication with a financial planner is key and can provide peace of mind while you enjoy your living your life overseas. Contact our team for more guidance. Tax treatment depends upon individual circumstances and is based on current UK tax legislation, that is subject to change at any time.

Our Face of the Club, Evon Ong, F&B Senior Captain, shone on the frontlines with her warm hospitality, attentiveness and ability to create memorable dining experiences for members and guests alike.
In the same celebratory spirit, we also marked our March staff birthdays with a joyful gathering filled with good food, laughter, and a delicious cake shared among colleagues. It was a wonderful moment to come
appreciate one another and celebrate the people who make the Club feel like home.
All the Best, Michelle!
In April, we said farewell to Michelle, our Head of Finance, who has been a valued part of the Club for over 10 years. Wok This Way: Inside Chef Wong’s Journey
A familiar face behind the scenes at Verandah Café, Chef Wong has been delighting members for many years with his expertly crafted Chinese dishes. With roots in Malaysia and a passion for bold, balanced flavours, he brings both experience and heart to every plate. We caught up with Chef Wong to talk about his culinary journey, kitchen inspirations, and what keeps him fired up after all these years.
You’ve spent many years at Verandah Café. What has kept you motivated and passionate in the kitchen over the years?
What has kept me going all these years is my genuine passion for cooking and the joy of seeing our guests enjoy the food at Verandah Café. There is something very rewarding about watching members return regularly and knowing they trust the quality and consistency of what we serve. That sense of responsibility motivates me to keep improving and refining my craft. Every service is an opportunity to deliver something satisfying and memorable, and that daily challenge continues to drive me in the kitchen.
Coming from Malaysia, how have your roots and early food experiences influenced your cooking style today?
Growing up in Malaysia exposed me to a wide variety of bold, layered flavours from a very young age. Malaysian cuisine is rich in spices and balance, and those early food memories trained my palate to be very sensitive to depth of flavour. Today, even when I prepare Chinese cuisine, I pay close attention to harmony in taste, aroma and texture. My Malaysian roots have definitely shaped the way I approach seasoning and flavour development in my cooking.
You specialise in Chinese cuisine. What do you think makes a truly memorable Chinese dish?
For me, a memorable Chinese dish begins with very fresh ingredients and precise control of heat. Chinese cooking relies heavily on timing, wok technique and the careful balance of seasoning. Achieving the right wok hei, texture and flavour requires both skill and experience. When all these elements come together naturally and the dish tastes clean yet flavourful, that is what makes it stand out and stay in people’s minds.
Can you share a favourite dish on the menu that best represents your culinary philosophy, and why it is special to you?
One of my favourite dishes on the menu is one that combines traditional Chinese techniques with careful attention to detail in both flavour and presentation. It reflects my belief in respecting classic foundations while continuously refining the dish to suit our members’ preferences. To me, it represents the years of experience, discipline and consistency I have built at Verandah Café, and it is always very satisfying to see guests enjoy it.
Outside of the kitchen, how do you usually spend your time and what helps you recharge?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending quality time with my family, which helps me reset and stay grounded after long hours in the kitchen. I also like exploring different restaurants and cuisines, as it keeps me inspired and open to new ideas. Staying active through light exercise also helps me maintain the energy needed for the fast-paced kitchen environment.
Looking back on your culinary journey so far, what advice would you give to young chefs who hope to build a long and meaningful career like yours?
My advice to young chefs is to stay patient, humble, and always willing to learn from the basics. Build strong foundations, respect the craft and focus on consistency in your work. Do not rush the process — a meaningful culinary career takes time, discipline, and perseverance. If you remain passionate, open to feedback, and committed to improving every day, the results will naturally follow.
The Books That Change Us
By Natasha Garcha, member of the Club since August, 2025
Sustainability, One Shelf at a Time
A good library might be the most sustainable room in any club. No energy transition required, just shelves of ideas quietly passing from one reader to the next.
Every sustainability movement begins with an idea, and more often than we realise, that idea begins in a book. Long before climate pledges and carbon targets entered everyday conversation, books were already shaping how people understood the natural world. Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring sparked the modern environmental movement by revealing the hidden ecological impact of pesticides, reminding readers that the environment is not distant, but part of our daily lives. Today, a new generation of authors continues that conversation. Recent bestsellers such as Abundance by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson challenge the notion that sustainability requires restraint, arguing instead for building more clean energy and infrastructure. Peter Brannen’s The Story of CO2 Is the Story of Everything places today’s climate crisis within Earth’s deep history, offering both perspective and urgency. Meanwhile, Robin Wall Kimmerer’s The Serviceberry invites readers to rethink our relationship with nature, imagining an economy built on reciprocity rather than consumption.
Though different in tone and approach, these books share a common thread: they change the way we see the world. And once that perspective shifts, our actions often follow. In this way, reading itself becomes a small act of sustainability. How we read matters too. Borrowing from libraries extends the life of each book without additional resources. Passing books along to friends and family turns reading into a quiet circular economy of ideas. Donating finished books allows knowledge to continue reaching new audiences.
This spirit of sharing is at the heart of The British Club’s upcoming book donation drive this May. By giving books a second life, members are helping ideas travel further, inspiring others to think differently about the world we share. After all, building a more sustainable future is not only about technology or policy. It is also about curiosity, conversation and learning. Sometimes, it begins with something as simple as opening a book.
Support The British Club’s book donation drive from 1st to 17th May and help keep good ideas in circulation! A sustainable future may be built with solar panels and wind turbines - but it often begins with a well-worn book passed from one reader to the next.

BC Cricket Season Off to a Flying Start!
By Subha Ganguly, Member of the Club since April, 2007
The British Club Cricket section’s 2026 season got underway on 7 March, with the BC XI journeying to Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to play the Misfits Cricket Club XI at the picturesque Johor Cricket Association (JCA) Oval. The day dawned bright after a week of unseasonal rain in Singapore and JB, with players bracing for a possible washout or a rain-reduced tie. It was an early start from the British Club at 7:30am, with both teams travelling together by coach to the JCA Oval for a 10:00am start.
The match began on time, with the Misfits winning the toss and electing to bat. BC XI got off to a strong start with the ball, reducing the Misfits to 27–4 within the first ten overs. The Misfits fought back well and staged a recovery, but were eventually bowled out before their allotted 40 overs for 181. BC XI started strongly in response, but steady and accurate bowling from the Misfits slowed their progress. In the end, with solid contributions from the middle and lower order, BC XI successfully chased down the target of 182 with three overs to spare.
The second fixture of March saw BC XI take on ANZA in the annual Commonwealth Cup at Dempsey Cricket Ground, with an early 8:00am start. ANZA won the toss and put BC XI in to bat. BC XI got off to a quick start, scoring 110 runs in the first 10 overs. Despite some accurate bowling that slowed the momentum, strong contributions from the middle and lower order saw BC XI post 211 from 30 overs. ANZA mounted a strong chase, but the match ended in a narrow 8-run win for BC XI.
Both matches were played in great spirit, with postmatch celebrations continuing long after the final ball. BC XI nets are held regularly on Tuesday nights at The Cage @ Dempsey. If you’re keen to join for some lighthearted cricket or looking to improve your skills, BC XI warmly welcomes players of all levels. Golf Section Tour - Pattaya 2026
By Nicholas John Merrow-Smit, Member of the Club since December, 2006
This year’s golf tour at the end of March took us back to Thailand, to the resort destination of Pattaya. Renowned among golf enthusiasts for its superb courses, Pattaya delivered an excellent experience.
Friday began smoothly with no drama getting to the 1st tee at Siam Country Club Old Course straight from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport. The prestigious parkland layout is meticulously maintained and hosts LPGA events. My caddy pointed out the lines the professionals would take, quite different from mine as I navigated tree-lined fairways, fast undulating greens, and water hazards. Warm, muggy weather led to rain on the back nine, making conditions more challenging. Scoring remained tight with frequent leaderboard changes. Tim Barkham emerged the winner on 33 points, followed by Nick Wong (32 pts) and Leo Fung (31 pts). Nearest the pins went to Phil Duckworth and Mike Hughes, while longest drives were claimed by Justin Hintz and Leo Fung. Best gross was Richard Holloway (85). We finished under a striking sunset, a red grapefruit of a sun dipping beneath Buddha’s gaze. Dinner followed at a local Mai Thai restaurant, with cocktails and stories of missed putts.
First day start on the Siam Country Club Old Course; Teng Teng, Shiz Hao, Olivia
First day finish with the setting sun; Matt, John, Richard, Nic
All ready for the Day 2; Chee Chan Golf Resort, Pattaya
Chee Chan 18th (perhaps) Nic, Tom, Teng Teng, Chuan
Shiz Hao, Matt, Justin, Nick with Buddha watching over!
Saturday began with a beach walk (for me) and breakfast in perfect weather. Our full complement of 20 players teed off at Chee Chan Golf Resort. Conditions improved and scores reflected it. Jackie Barkham led with 38 points, ahead of Tim Barkham (37 pts) and Chuan Campbell (35 pts). Matt MB claimed two nearest the pins, while longest drives went to Tom Griffith and Leo Fung. An Irish Rumble added to the fun. We gathered at The Glass House for beachside cocktails before Jackie Barkham (Fines Master) handed out fines for dress code breaches, rules mishaps, and tardiness. Dinner was a seafood buffet with Sauvignon Blanc.
Sunday saw an early start at Siam Country Club Plantation, with its stunning clubhouse and facilities. As described by Golfasian, the course features long carries, blind shots, elevated greens, undulating fairways, and daunting bunkers. What they didn’t mention were the small flies that joined us at times. Still, John Bussell delivered a standout performance, winning with 46 points, ahead of Jackie Barkham (37 pts) and Akane Kobayashi and Tan Teng Teng (36 pts).
Congratulations to overall winner Jackie Barkham for an outstanding three days. Thanks to everyone who helped organise golf, meals, and entertainment. We look forward to more great events in 2026—Pairs Invitational at Sentosa (May/June) and the Club Championship (Sept/Oct)!
Jackie Barkham glowing in the glory of her Tour Victory! Congratulations.
Richard, Chuan, Dave enjoying a moment!

BC notches convincing win over Singapore Swimming Club
By PJ Enriquez, Member of the Club since April, 2023
In March, the section got off to a winning start in its first interclub friendly of the year, defeating the Singapore Swimming Club 12–8. It was a strong all-round team performance, with our veteran players leading the way through steady, consistent play, well supported by several newer members who made valuable contributions on the day.
A special shoutout to Aneetha Vine, Duncan Micallef, Konal Sharma, May Kwo, and Marina Krishnan, who each delivered outstanding performances by winning all of their matches.
The Club will be hosting the return leg of this interclub sometime in May, so those interested in joining can do so by approaching our friendly SRC staff.
Well done to everyone who represented the section in a great team effort.
A New Class for Poom and Black Belts
By Vicky Mackay, Member of the Club since April, 2024
The Taekwondo section is pleased to announce that the addition of a third Taekwondo class has officially begun! Starting in April, our Poom (Junior Black Belt) and Black Belt students now have their own dedicated time slot.
What is a Poom belt?
A Poom belt is awarded to students under the age of 15, who have advanced to the equivalent of a first Dan Black Belt skill level. Poom belts are distinctly half black and half red in colour, reflecting their advanced skill level while also recognising that these young students are still developing in maturity and judgement. Typically, students train in Taekwondo for 3–5 years before earning their first Poom.
Poom belt students are subjected to the same rigorous grading and technical standards as Black Belts, with the key difference being age. The Poom belt, which has four sub-gradings within it, provides young students with meaningful goals to strive towards and be recognised for. Well done to all our students!

From Lane 3 to the Finish Line: The Masters Swimming Squad Update
By Nathalie Farrow, Member of the Club since August, 2020
The real payoff for all those early morning kilometres was on full display recently, as five of our squad superstars (Derek, James, Jo, Ian, and Yien) took their fitness to the triathlon circuit. While some were seasoned racers, for others, this was their first time ever competing in a multi-sport event. Moving from the calm of Lane 3 to the frantic “washing machine” start of an open water swim is a massive hurdle, yet all of them totally crushed it. Watching them exit the water strong and power through the bike and run legs was a proud moment for the whole team. It proves that the hard km’s we put in at the pool are the best way to prep for any endurance challenge.
This success comes directly from the grit and gossip that defines our sessions. If you’ve walked past the pool recently and seen a group of us looking particularly exhausted but strangely happy, you’ve found the Masters Swimming squad. Lately, we’ve been deep in a block of serious mileage and tough intervals that demand a certain level of stubbornness. Let’s be honest: half the session is spent complaining at the wall. Whether it’s the frustration of too many kick sets, the longing for more pull sets, or the dreaded Saturday “Liam set” that feels designed to kill everyone before breakfast, the banter is the only thing that gets us through.
That camaraderie is exactly why people shouldn’t worry about the misconception that you need to be a former Olympian to join us. In reality, all you need is a willingness to chase the person in front of you and a sense of humour for when the coach adds an extra 400m to the set just for fun. There is a unique bond that forms when you’re halfway through a punishing set and the person in the next lane gives you a quick nod to keep going or says, “last one!” We push each other, help fix each other’s strokes, and definitely laugh at each other’s goggle marks.
It is also a well-known fact that breakfast at the Club tastes significantly better after you’ve clocked a few kilometres before 9am. Whether you’re eyeing your first triathlon or just want to see what you can do, the blocks are waiting.
See you in the lanes!
