We have bought a home and sold a home using Wilson And Co on both occasions. We would thoroughly recommend Sally and Craig of Wilson And Co. They guided us through a complicated process with ease. We were impressed by their integrity and reliability giving us confidence with the daunting world of real estate. Well done. John and Jillian Davis, Bongaree Sellers & Buyers I highly recommend Wilson And Co to sell your property with. Sally was absolutely fantastic every step of the way. REGULAR CONTRIBUTORS Anne Matthews

Dear Readers, Our community seems to be getting back on its feet after a dreadful start to the year. I had my sister Karyn up for the weekend and as I gave her a tour of the Island on Sunday, I was surprised and happy to see the café’s full and the markets had a wonderful turnout. The support our businesses are getting has been lovely to see and with so many events etc coming up I can only hope we will see an upturn in business for our struggling owners and they can continue to grow and thrive from this point on. We have some fantastic articles in this edition and some new businesses that have come on board with us, check them out and as per usual, please show them support. We would like to thank all of our advertisers and contributors for making this wonderful community magazine what it is, we couldn’t continue without your support, so a massive thank you to you all. We would also like to welcome Bribie Garden Centre to our contributors. Pop in and check out the wonderful range of plants and décor they have on offer! On another note, we have our usual history pages provided by Barry Clark and I would like to address this article. I did struggle with deciding to print it or not due to some offensive wording in it. At the end of the day, this is history, it cannot be rewritten and hopefully everyone will understand this is not my or Barry’s wording, but an article written 184 years ago and as such, changing it would be not a true representation of the article itself.

Let ’s Talk Botox

BOTOX IS ONE OF THE WELL-KNOWN MEDICAL TREATMENTS THAT CONTROL THE AGING PROCESS AND ENHANCE YOUR SKIN. BOTOX INJECTIONS SMOOTHEN THE SKIN AND REDUCE WRINKLES TO GIVE YOU A YOUNGER APPEARANCE. THE BENEFITS OF BOTOX ARE WELL UNDERSTOOD GIVEN ITS POPULARITY. BUT, THERE ARE ALSO CERTAIN MISCONCEPTIONS REGARDING THE LONGEVITY OF THE TREATMENT IN MAINTAINING THE ENHANCEMENTS.

HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY Therefore, if you are looking for more information on botox, you can search for an experienced botox skin aesthetics clinic nearby for consultation. BOTOX SKIN ENHANCEMENTS If you are looking for a Botox treatment to lift your appearance, you should rest assured that Botox is safe and won’t impact your appearance in a negative way. Many refer to Botox as a treatment that cheats age, and rightly so if you visit a certified and experienced Botox practitioner. Essentially, you will not look older as the Botox injection effect wears off. Your skin wrinkles will be similar to ones before the injection, and you will not notice any dramatic shift in your appearance. Your skin has tiny muscles underneath. The muscle activities under your skin are the primary activation zone of Botox. Botox shots stimulate the muscle activities under your skin, giving you fuller and smoother-looking skin. Usually, you are recommended Botox every 3 to 4 months to maintain the skin enhancements. The treatment uses neuromodulators that make your skin healthier and provides an even tone. It also improves the texture of your skin.

BENEFITS OF BOTOX The benefits of Botox are more than physical. You look much younger with flawless and smoother skin. As a result, you are much more confident in social

circles. Your inner positivity influences your external appearance too. Regular Botox treatment scheduled according to your doctor’s recommendation helps maintain your appearance and longevity of the treatment results.

STOPPING BOTOX TREATMENT However, at any stage, for some reason, if you stop the treatment, the effects will be there to observe. Your skin will slowly return to its original state but still better due to the preventive effect. Your skin will show wrinkles according to your age due to a lack of the necessary Botox shots, limiting the skin enhancements. It is a very natural process. However, the process is often not well received by the people on Botox for a very long time. The change is surprising not only for you but also to the people around you. Especially the ones who have known you for only the past few years. Hence the flawed perception of “Botox makes you look older after it wears off.” Stopping Botox changes your skin but not in the wrong way. It is just a transition to your original skin. However, your skin is still better than it would be without Botox. Botox enhances your skin texture, like softness and elasticity. The treatment prevents the dynamic lines on your face from turning into static lines. For example, the lines near your nose while smiling and the lines on your forehead revealing your worry are dynamic lines. Without Botox, these lines develop in permanent lines known as static lines. Your skin maintains elasticity for an extended period even after stopping the preventive Botox injections.

BOTOX AWARENESS Most people interested in Botox are especially concerned about the after-effects or side effects. The fear is only natural and similar to the fear of any other novel medical treatment like, for example, a hair transplant. Even though Botox has been prevalent since the 1980s, its accessibility was limited. Only a wealthy and famous section of the society had access to the treatment making it a luxury. Botox became mainstream in the larger cosmetic and skin treatment market only after 2007 or so. The increase in Botox increased the number of Botox clinics. Therefore, it is crucial to research your Botox clinic or visit only reputed and experienced Botox practitioners and clinics in your region. Your wrong choice in selecting a Botox doctor will deliver you an unsatisfactory experience. Botox procedure comprises carefully injecting the accurate Botox dose into your skin. Experienced and expert Botox doctors take utmost care and use individual syringes. The products are certified, and thus, you do not worry about the side and after-effects. The qualified doctors provide the necessary guidance about the treatment, results, and ways to maintain skin enhancements. Botox is a simple but very effective medical procedure to provide flawless skin for a long time. Stopping the treatment anytime will still keep your skin better than it would be without Botox. You can consult your nearest Botox clinic for further consultation.

HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY social engagement, it’s possible for your loved one to age in place contentedly. It isn’t unusual for household tasks to take on new levels of difficulty as we age. Balance, speed, and flexibility can all deteriorate as our bodies slow down.

HAVE YOU HEARD OF THE SAYING

Having someone to help with these tasks makes life easier for seniors. Not only do they get to relax a little more, but they also get to engage with others while working. We all know that working alongside a friend makes even the most mundane tasks more enjoyable.

“Everybody needs somebody”? Engaging with others regularly can increase mental acuity, stave off depression, and promote healthier habits. Without companionship, seniors have a much higher chance of suffering from memory loss, loneliness, and anxiety. Throughout history, families either cared for seniors at home or paid for them to live in a care facility. Today, however, several factors make it difficult for seniors to enjoy strong relationships. First, grown children sometimes move far away from their parents and can’t visit often.

Second, they may not be able to afford the costs of a care facility.

No matter where we are in life, having strong relationships is critical to staying healthy, happy, and secure!!

That's why diverse relationships have become critical in safeguarding the health of seniors. Enabling seniors to find friends in their neighbourhoods lets them build sustainable relationships in the absence of their families.

SENIOR COMPANIONSHIP

Physical and Psychological Benefits Studies show that those who actively engage with others have a 70% slower rate of decline in mental acuity. Meanwhile, the rate of disability is 43% lower in seniors who engage socially, emphasizing the strong relationship between social engagement and physical health. Most seniors have little desire to leave their homes after many happy years there. In fact, the moving process often leaves seniors feeling isolated and depressed. However, with

Libido Seesaw

Many couples find themselves frustrated in their relationship because of lack of spark and desire and may seek out professional help in areas like reduced sex drive or declining libido, and seemingly mismatched needs and desires can and does cause frustration. Individual libidos do not always match; one may have a stronger appetite for intimacy than the other. This can be frustrating for both sides. The one with the higher drive can feel frustrated and may feel a disconnect or an emptiness if their love language is physical contact, their partner may not need this level of contact to feel secure in the relationship. Society may assume that men are usually ready for intimacy at a glance and that women require a lot of foreplay but maybe there is a deeper undercurrent. My exploration has led me to see the intimate connection as a sacred one, one that should be “alive” at all times. This is the interplay of the feminine and the masculine and explores with more maturity what intimacy actually is, what is vulnerability and the interconnectedness of all areas of our lives.

We are conditioned within western culture that happiness and security are to be found in objects outside of ourselves. We have two voices we hear, our critical and our forgiving, isn’t it about time we honoured ourselves as well as each other? The critical voice finds ways to improve. We hear this voice when we choose to present ourselves in the best light to others. We wish to look, feel and act our best, often through fear We also hear our forgiving voice, which is kind and wise. This voice reminds us of our strengths and values. Both these voices are normal when balanced, but too often we listen to our critical voice rather than our forgiving voice, so who are we pleasing when we are not prioritising kindness to ourselves? Sometimes it is necessary to begin for the first time ever to know that it is okay to be kind to and begin to love ourselves, first. This isn’t to be confused with selfishness. We need to recognise our own beauty, our love and our acceptance of self. So, what does that really mean and how do we own that? Isn’t it about time you honour yourself as well as each other? Want to improve your relationship with yourself and or your partner??? Ready to create a life full of more love and true abundance???? About time, isn’t it? HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY substitute high school maths teacher, who spoke to Seren’s class for an hour about genetics, biology, and physical traits in babies.

LIFELONG LOVE OF SCIENCE FINALLY OFF THE BACKBURNER

“I was just so engrossed in what she was explaining and how she was presenting, talking about dominant and recessive genes and how some babies end up with blue eyes. I think it was the most fun class I’d ever had,” Ms Brussaard said. And while she concentrated on many other subjects at school, she still borrowed science books from the library to read in her spare time. “I was in my own little world, honestly, having a good time enjoying science on the side,” she said. Now, after finishing school in 2014, building a house, starting a career and starting a family – all the while feeding her fascination for science – Ms Brussaard is keen to pursue a career in science. “I think the gap between school and study is purely because I needed to do some things in my life first. But now that my daughter is going to school, I’ve finally been able to come to uni,” she said.

A

Moreton Bay mother has reignited her childhood passion for science, enrolling to study towards a Bachelor of Science at USC Moreton Bay. There were many telltale moments throughout Seren Brussaard’s childhood that showed she had a strong preference for science. However, the 25-year-old Griffin mother, who is starting a Bachelor of Science at USC Moreton Bay this semester as her

5-year-old daughter starts school, is unsure when her scientific passion first ignited. Perhaps it was when, as a young child, she would choose documentaries over kids’ movies. Or maybe it was during primary school when she stacked as many astronomy books as she could carry home from the library, while her friends preferred The Sleepover Club books. Or when she was held spellbound by a

Ms Brussaard is looking forward to learning a “mixed bag” of topics, including ecology, biology and chemistry, biotechnology, microbiology and more from leading scientists, at Australia’s newest university campus just 15 minutes from her home. “The community here is great, and it’s a beautiful part of Queensland to live in. My partner and I want to be somewhere with great opportunities, and the growth aspect of Moreton Bay really appeals,” said Ms Brussaard, who grew up at Bribie Island.

Jessica Yung - BHSc. Acup.,

Wendy Ryan – BHSc. Acup

Registered Acupuncturists and Doctors of Chinese Medicine under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia

WHO IS BRIBIE ACUPUNCTURE? We’re acupuncturists Jessica Yung and Wendy Ryan, and receptionist Katherine Williamson. We’re so fortunate to live and work on Bribie Island and be a part of this incredible community. Our clinic’s mission is to help people achieve the quality of life they desire. Jessica established Bribie Acupuncture in 2020 after having worked in clinics in Brisbane for several years. Quickly outgrowing her first treatment space on Bribie, she expanded the clinic and moved it to its current location on Benabrow Avenue in early 2021, where Katherine joined a few months later. In late 2021, Wendy came on board following many years of working in clinics in the Moreton Bay region. We’re grateful for all the wonderful people of Bribie and surrounds who make our thriving clinic the lovely space that it is.

WHY ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine have grown in popularity in Australia, particularly in the last few decades. There are many reasons why people seek treatment with acupuncture and Chinese medicine, however our clients' reasons tend to fall in one or more of the following categories: • They’re after a holistic treatment approach that 14

addresses the root causes of their concerns, not just the symptoms. • They're looking for a natural, non-pharmacological way to improve their health and wellbeing without the negative side effects that can sometimes come with drugs and surgery. • They're looking for answers to their health concerns that conventional medicine has not yet been able to provide. • They've been referred to us by other health professionals, such as doctors, physiotherapists, and midwives for adjunct treatment. Chinese medicine looks at your health history, symptoms, diet, and lifestyle using a different lens than conventional medicine; this lens can often uncover the missing pieces of your health puzzle.

WHO GETS ACUPUNCTURE?

All walks of life! We see a wide range of people at our clinic with a variety of conditions. The youngest client we’ve treated on Bribie so far is four years old and the oldest is 91.

HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK? Chinese medicine works with the body’s natural ability to heal. Acupuncture stimulates blood flow and guides it to areas of our bodies that require healing to provide nourishment; blood contains

www.thebribieislander.com.au

The Bribie Islander

all the nutrients vital to our existence, including oxygen, water, platelets, hormones, etc. Depending on where we put the needles, we can help increase circulation in specific parts of the body. Acupuncture essentially turns on the ‘ON’ switch to self-healing. It also increases blood circulation in areas where toxins have accumulated to decrease inflammation.

WHAT CONDITIONS CAN ACUPUNCTURE TREAT? Though acupuncture is well known for its effectiveness in treating pain conditions, such as back pain, bursitis, and osteoarthritis, acupuncture can also help in the treatment of countless other non-pain related conditions. Some of the other conditions we’ve recently seen in clinic include: • Fertility, pregnancy support, and menopause • Peripheral neuropathy • Trigeminal neuralgia • Stress and anxiety • Digestive health Treatment styles can be adapted to suit your requirements; if you have limited mobility for example, treatments can be conducted whilst you’re seated on a chair with just your shirt sleeves and pant legs rolled up – there is no need to disrobe or climb on top of a treatment table. This style of acupuncture, where needles are placed only

on the extremities (and not on the torso, for example) is known as "distal acupuncture". Much like how a switch on the wall is able to turn on a light bulb on the ceiling, acupuncture points located on the arm or leg are able to affect other areas of the body via the body's internal wiring. If you’d like to make a booking or if you’d like to discuss whether acupuncture and Chinese medicine is right for you, please contact us via our website www.bribieacupuncture. com.au or call 0423 160 228. You can also find us on Facebook and Instagram @ bribieacupuncture. HICAPS is available onsite. Pensioner discounts available. ST PATRICK’S DAY CELEBRATIONS

HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY

In fine tradition TOORBUL& DONNYBROOK SENIORS CLUB celebrated St Patrick’s Day on Thursday. We met for a lovely lunch – freshly cooked Corned Meat, mixed vegetables and Colcannon – an Irish mashed potato dish. Beetroot and pickles rounded off the main course. Sweets followed – pavlova, cheesecake, green jelly, fruit salad and cream. What a feast! We were entertained throughout with lovely background music by guitarist Mike, and we then tested our brains with an Irish Word Search and Crossword Puzzle. Good friends, a glass of bubbly, lots of laughter and chatter – what better way to celebrated St. Patrick.

DABI does St. Patrick's Day With a change of paddling time to the morning, those of us who could make it, turned up in the spirit of St Patrick's Day with enthusiasm. While the weather was great, there was still quite a bit of evidence of the aftermath of flooding in the passage. A lot of Irish jokes and good humour were exchanged and the enjoyment of being able to get back onto the water was immense. A reminder to all Survivors of Breast Cancer and their supporters. Our mission at Bribie Island is to continually promote awareness of and recovery from breast cancer through the uplifting experience and exercise of dragon boating. It is a home, a refuge, a safe place. It looks inward and keeps outside threats outside. It is a retreat from stress and is self- nurturing.

The amazing and varied works of 10 Bribie printmakers/ artists will be on display in the 2022 Still Scratching exhibition at Bribie Island Community Arts Centre March 22 – April 10. The works in this exhibition scratch the surface in a literal and metaphorical sense. Surfaces include paper, fabric, clay, timber and plastic. These artists like to bend and break the rules and manipulate their chosen media to push the boundaries. You’ll love the lengths they’ve gone to bring art that makes you gasp, gaze and guess. note of this Esteemed Sage? Several months ago, whilst browsing through Facebook, I happened to notice an advertisement for a remote vacuum cleaner of a kind that a close friend of mine

www.thebribieislander.com.au

The Bribie Islander

swore by. The price was very modest, and I decided to venture into the perils of online shopping. Perhaps, this was my first mistake, why ever did I do it? Had I not learnt that this way

madness lies? At least for this bumble-head, who is still struggling with her smartphone and the mysteries of texting. I have had problems with filling in online forms and

HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY attempting to buy books etc. before. Why ever do they not make it a standard form? My keyboard has so often been drenched by hot tears of frustration! However, this time, after a mere 90 minutes or so, it would seem that I had achieved success and after hitting Send, received an email in my Inbox, congratulating me on the purchase of the said vacuum cleaner. After two or three days, a large box was delivered to my home by Australia Post and, after signing my life away, I was anxious to inspect the contents. I ripped open the box immediately. It was at this point that my heart sank! Yes, there was my vacuum cleaner, but, alas, it needed to be assembled. Now, I do not consider myself to be unintelligent in a general fashion, smarter than the average bear as Yogi would say, but The Good Lord had a moment of amnesia when assembling my brain, and completely forgot to add even a morsel of spatial know-how. However, if nothing else, I am persistent. With the help of the Instruction Booklet, written in that

peculiar language, Techlish, I finally made what I thought was a good fist of putting everything together and after charging it on its “home”, expected it to leave base and begin working. Parental attachment proved too strong, so being a believer in “tough love”, as many a parent bird, I thought it was time to kick it out of its comfortable nest. I lifted it away and told it to get about its business, sweeping the Berage floor. Well, it began whirring and raised my hopes that all was well. That is until I noticed that it was indulging in adolescent fits of pique by spitting on the floor! Yes, it would appear to be sweeping diligently, but then pausing, only to empty the contents of the dust bin in small piles on the floor, then going on its merry way, the sweeping then followed by yet another spit. The floor became covered with tiny "mole-hills" of dust. I tried everything I could think of, but finally admitted defeat and put the thing away and tried to forget about it. As you know, I had visitors at the end of January and

Nikolai was kind enough to ask if he could do anything for me. Remembering my miscreant vacuum cleaner, I asked him to take a look at it. Within five minutes, he had solved the problem. I had made the mistake of putting in a part that was a water tank instead of the part designed to hold the dust. Yes, this smart vacuum cleaner, will mop your floors as well. Not an adventure I am ready to undertake in the foreseeable future. Once he had inserted the correct part, Flora, as I was going to call her, behaved perfectly. I followed or attempted to follow, all instructions regarding the closing of doors so she could not escape down the road and attempt to sweep the entire Island. The theory was, that at the end of her sweeping, she would find her way back to base where she could rest, recharge, and have a little nap after her exertions. Why Flora you ask? I thought it was a pleasant feminine name, for one who dusts the floor and keeps it tidy between the visits of my friend and cleaner who "does" for me and makes the entire house

sparkling! I am, however, having to do a re-think as regards the name! Lately, I have noticed some rather naughty behaviour, more associated with the opposite sex! In my Berage, as well as Ferrari's docking station, are trundle beds, and also fans, assembled by my son of course. My readers know me too well to think that I could have assembled them. They are rather heavy, and I thought that since they had metal bases, they would pose no problem for my vacuum cleaner who, in my innocence, I thought, would simply back away. But no, the vacuum cleaner continued to attempt to mount them, got stuck, and was very reluctant to disengage. To your scribe's somewhat prurient imagination, it seemed that attempts of sexual ingress were taking place within my home! Heaven knows what mongrel offspring might result! The name Flora simply had to go, replaced by Ferdinand, called after the cartoon character, Ferdinand, the Gentle Bull.

DRIVERS

Aaron, our previous driver who worked with us for over 5 years has decided to move on to another line of employment for more challenges. We thank Aaron for all his hard work over the years and we wish him all the best for the future. We have two new drivers Darin and Harley who are just learning the ropes, but the guys are very obliging, friendly and polite, so please make them welcome when they come calling. We hope they will enjoy being part of the Busy Fingers Team.

We always welcome new volunteers, and currently have spaces for ladies on Thursdays, Fridays and also Saturday mornings, so if you have a few hours spare please give us a call on 3408 1014 or pop into the shop and speak to Sonia, we are registered with Centrelink for Job Seeker requirements. Newcomers to the island can easily make new friends as we have an excellent group of volunteers working with us, it is also a wonderful way of supporting our beautiful island and its residents.

Once again, I would like to sincerely thank all

The shop is receiving some great donations at the moment, so we are stocking the shelves as quickly as we can. Recently, we started putting out some winter clothing, which has proven popular, so we will continue to dedicate a certain number of racks for the warmer clothing. If you are heading south for a holiday, please check out our racks and the bargains we have to offer. After Easter, which is the middle of next month this year and depending on the weather, we will continue to increase the amount of warmer clothing we put out. We will of course continue to have a small amount of lighter clothing available during the cooler months. Pickup Service is free, so if you cannot bring your donations to us, please call 3408 1014 to arrange for us to collect them, please do not call the admin office phone (34101920) as this phone is upstairs which is often unattended, resulting in missed calls. We are still delivering purchases at a small fee just to cover some of our truck/driver expenses. www.thebribieislander.com.au

We are currently trying to arrange to have a small extension to the shop, this will be at the front of the shop (facing the road). This space is needed for more storage for out of season clothing and will also allow us to have more clothing racks available in the store. We believe that any disruption will be minimal to customers and staff, I will keep you informed about when we hope to commence, which is also dependent on material availability, hopefully, it will occur soon.

NEW COMMUNITY POSTAL AGENCY OPENS AT SANDSTONE POINT IGA Helping serve your community

At Australia Post, we are internationally recognised as a leading postal business. We operate one of the country's largest and most accessible retail networks, servicing communities throughout Australia. Much of our network is operated by private individuals acting as licensees, agents, or franchisees such as the brand-new Community Postal Agency (CPA) that has opened at IGA Sandstone Point, providing important postal services for the local community. Though not a full-service post office, the CPA provides Sandstone Point locals with the ability to buy stamps and postbags, send parcels and registered mail as well as collect parcels. IGA business owner and long-term local, Andrew Cornett, said he was excited to open the CPA after he bought the IGA in later 2018. “With no local post office in our postcode, I’m very glad to now be able to provide this important service for our local community. “People can now do their grocery shopping, send mail and collect their parcels all at the one place, so it is very convenient. “We’re just offering basic postal products and services at the moment but depending on the response from the community we hope to expand further in the future and offer more services,” said Andrew. THE CPA IS NOW OPEN WITH PEOPLE ABLE TO ACCESS THE SERVICE FROM 6 AM TO 8 PM, 7 DAYS A WEEK.

HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY

credit rating or “credit score” is a number that represents how dependable you have been as a borrower in meeting your repayment obligations. It is used by banks and other credit providers to help them decide whether to lend you money, how much they will lend you and may sometimes influence what interest rate is offered to you. Your credit score will vary, depending on the rating agency, between 0 and 1200. The higher your score the more creditworthy you are. The lower your score the more difficult it will be for you to obtain a loan. If you are seeking a loan, check your credit report first so that you will know what information your potential loan provider will have access to.

HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY Things that may affect your credit score include failing to pay credit card or loan repayments on time. Simply applying for credit may also affect your credit score. If you are going to apply for credit, check your credit report before doing so. If you have a low credit score it may not be worth taking the risk of a knockback as your unsuccessful application may appear on your credit record and it may further lower your credit score. Also, be aware that shopping around for a good deal may result in multiple listings on your credit file. These can adversely affect your credit score. If you are more than 60 days late in paying a bill and debt collection activity has started, you may get a default listing on your credit report that can remain in place for up to five years and the listing may reduce your credit score. If you are struggling to pay your bills advise your credit provider immediately and try to negotiate a repayment arrangement that you can afford. This may avoid an adverse credit listing. It is wise to check your credit report

regularly. It may alert you to any incorrect information and let you know if you have been the victim of identity theft. If you change address, make sure to contact all your credit providers including banks and utilities to ensure bills are redirected to your new address. If you are unaware of these bills and fail to pay them a serious credit infringement or overdue debt may be listed on your credit report. If you believe the credit information on your report is inaccurate, contact the credit provider directly and seek an investigation. If you are unhappy with the credit provider or credit reporting body’s response, you can complain to the relevant ombudsman. This could include AFCA - the Australian Financial Complaints Authority, the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman and the Energy & Water Ombudsman for your state or territory. If the credit listing is wrong the Ombudsman can order the creditor to ask the credit-reporting agency to remove the listing. You will not be charged any fees for this

service. You can access your credit report for free. Contact one or all of these agencies for your free credit report: Experian 1300 783 684; illion 132 333; Equifax 138 332 Beware of commercial organisations offering to repair your credit rating for a fee and disregard any communications offering a free credit check. Instead, refer to the Government’s www.moneysmart.gov. au and the Australian Retail Credit Rating Association’s www.creditsmart. org.au for detailed information about credit reporting

he Australian egg industry has proven the power of transparency, with the release of the annual Sustainability Framework Report by Australian Eggs showing levels of trust in the egg industry by Australians has increased significantly since 2018. The Australian Eggs Sustainability Framework examines the relationship between the Australian public and the egg industry, through an annual community survey by Voconiq which builds on three years of previous CSIRO research. The community survey explores the current position of the egg industry within the Australian community, addressing key points including the lives of people, animal welfare, environmental impact, and

CONFIDENCE RISES AS TRANSPARENCY DRIVES CONSUMER TRUST WITHIN THE AUSTRALIAN EGG INDUSTRY economic viability of the egg industry, with the results being presented in a report as part of an annual cycle. “To ensure this continues to improve, the Australian egg industry is investing in research and resources to make eggs even safer. A key element of this is traceability, which allows food safety issues like salmonella to be identified and managed out of the food system promptly. While most eggs consumed by the public are already the subject of effective traceability systems there remains an opportunity to increase the coverage of this process,” Mr McMonnies continues. “In response, Australian Eggs has been developing a traceability solution for the egg industry based on the best systems currently available.

This robust traceability solution will provide farms that do not currently have systems in place with greater transparency over egg movements within their operations and provide stronger assurances on food safety and quality,” Mr McMonnies said. Days Eggs in South Australia is one of the largest producers in the country with around 450,000 eggs laid per day. Days Eggs pride themselves on innovation, quality and their relentless pursuit of hen welfare and have also been early adopters of comprehensive traceability systems to help protect the community, hens and staff. Dion Andary of Days Eggs said “Traceability is one of the most critical business processes; without it, the business is operating blind. Traceability provides full transparency

and provides the team with the peace of mind that any health or quality issues with any of their eggs or hens can be rectified immediately, greatly reducing potential impacts.” Mr Andary says he believes outside of the easy to measure financial benefits, the most important benefit of traceability is trust. “The importance of being able to trace an egg back to the date of lay, date of sale and specific shed, and the role that plays in ensuring trust, cannot be overstated. Customers can trust that we have the processes in place to provide safe eggs, our staff can trust us that we have the mechanisms in place to support them in any issues, and we can trust our team that the correct processes are being followed,” Mr Andary said.

On Tuesday 8th March, Bribie VIEW Club hosted an International Women’s Day Breakfast at Pacific Harbour Golf Club. A hundred women – and one brave man – attended the function. The guest speaker was Heather Park. Heather is a qualified lawyer and accountant, and is a partner with Deloittes, specialising in taxation law. Her talk was titled “From Canefields to Cambridge” where she shared with us her journey from humble beginnings in Innisfail through academia, and the joy she found in learning, so much so that she spends holidays attending Cambridge summer school! Heather said that she had sponsored children through World Vision for a few years when she was introduced to The Smith Family sponsorship programme for Australian children. She understands the struggle for some children to achieve their academic goals and now sponsors several children through TSF Learning for Life.

EPISODE 6

By: Al Finegan The Story of the Loss of HMS Guardian 1789/90 “You may recall a mention in Episode 4 of Guardian which was a supply ship wrecked in 1789 on the way to relive the colony. This is her story. 34

HMS Guardian was

a 44-gun Roebuck-class fifth rate, 43metres long, twodecker of the Royal Navy, launched 23rd March 1784. She was later converted to carry stores. Guardian was commanded by Captain Edward Riou (1762-1801). Riou began his naval career at the age of 12 as a midshipman on Discovery on Captain James Cook’s third and

final voyage from 1776 to 1779. In September 1789, Guardian left England, bound for NSW laden with livestock, crops and other supplies. These were desperately needed by the colony at Sydney Town, which had been struggling to survive since the arrival of the First Fleet in January 1788. Guardian also carried

Guardian took on supplies at Cape Town in December 1789 and continued south on her way to NSW. Less than two weeks after departure, large icebergs were sighted in Guardian’s path. On 24th December, Riou sent lifeboats to collect ice to provide drinking water for the cattle. Later that night, the wind abated, and a heavy fog enveloped the ship. Drifting blindly in light wind, Guardian suddenly scraped the length of her side along an iceberg, tearing a gash in the hull and bringing down spars and riggings. Water began to pour into her lower decks. The crew worked frantically in darkness to pack the hole. Then twice more the crew reeled as Guardian scraped along another iceberg, then another. Water rushed into the hull of the ship. Riou and his crew worked desperately all night to pump out the water and repair the damage. As the sun rose on 25th December, the crew celebrated Christmas morning frantically making crude repairs by strapping sails across the gashes in the ship’s side. The flooded hull was still being pumped out, but it was

REGULAR FEATURES soon clear that the repairs were failing, and rising winds and waves were causing further damage to the ship. Riou ordered heavy objects, including guns and livestock, thrown overboard to try to lighten the ship’s load and prevent it from sinking. Riou discussed the dire situation with his first mate, and it was agreed that as many passengers as possible should abandon the ship in the five lifeboats. Apart from possibly saving them, it would further lighten the load on the ship. Some of the men had broken into the ship’s liquor supplies and several drunken scuffles broke out while the five lifeboats were being hoisted out. A total of 259 people boarded the five boats, leaving Riou with sixtytwo people: 3 midshipmen, including the surgeon's mate, the boatswain, the carpenter, 3 superintendents of convicts, a daughter of one of the superintendents, 30 seamen and boys, and 21 convicts. As the ship’s boats rowed off, Guardian was nearly awash with 16 feet of water in the hold. A bumping noise on the deck attracted Riou’s attention, and on an investigation, he found several casks that had broken free and were floating in the hold, trapped under the lower gundeck. Realising that this was providing extra buoyancy, Riou had the gun deck hatches sealed and caulked, while another sail was sent under the hull to control the flooding. Having now created a substitute hull out of his deck, Riou raised what little sail he could and began the long journey back to land, with the pumps being continuously manned. For nine weeks Riou and his small crew navigated Guardian, by now little more than a raft, across almost 2,000 KM to the Cape of Good Hope. Riou attempted several more repair methods and tried several ways of steering the broken ship, all of which were only partially successful. It was later recorded that it was Riou’s leadership and optimism that kept the crew working to exhaustion. Finally, on 21st February 1790, a lookout called out that he had Cape Town

insight. Riou started a smoke fire on the deck as a distress signal. This triggered whalers to be despatched from Table Bay to tow the battered ship to the safety of False Bay, south of Capetown. Riou ran her ashore to prevent her sinking and was able to organise the off-loading of her remaining cargo. A gale struck the coast shortly afterwards, completing the wreck of Guardian. Riou and his sailors took a passing ship to return to England. At the end of April 1790, the safe arrival of Guardian and her remaining crew was reported in British newspapers. Riou was hailed as a hero for his bravery. Songs and poems were written about the Guardian disaster, which became a sensational story in Europe. Meanwhile, Riou anxiously searched reports and newspapers for any news of the fate of his crew who had abandoned ship in the five lifeboats. Riou wrote several letters to the Admiralty, exonerating his crew from any blame, including those who attempted survival in the lifeboats. Eventually, he learned that one of these small boats, containing about fifteen survivors had been picked up by a passing French ship. The other boats and passengers were never seen again. The convicts and their supervisors joined the Second

Fleet en route to NSW. When the surviving convicts finally arrived in NSW in June 1790, they were given immediate conditional pardons by Governor Phillip. Riou had sent a favourable report with their superintendent lauding their conduct in helping to save Guardian. Captain Riou’s brave conduct during the disaster led to his promotion and he later worked under Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson. In 1801 Nelson appointed Riou to command HMS Amazon for the Battle of Copenhagen. He appointed Riou to command the frigates and smaller vessels, with the instruction to deploy his ships to support the main fleet. As the battle began, several of Nelson's ships ran aground on shoals in the harbour. As Nelson's ships of the line engaged their Danish counterparts, Riou took his frigates in to harass the Tre Kroner forts and blockships. Despite being heavily outmatched and dangerously exposed, his small fleet exchanged fire for several hours. The ships suffered heavy casualties. Riou was hit on the head by a shell splinter. Riou exclaimed, 'Come, then, my boys, let us all die together!' The words were scarcely uttered when a cannonball severed him in two. The naval historian Sir Jahleel

Brenton declared that Riou had all the qualities of a perfect officer. Parliament commemorated his memory with a memorial in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral.

POSTSCRIPT Below is a copy of the letter written by Riou to the Secretary of the Admiralty while the lifeboats were being prepared to depart the stricken Guardian. Sir, If any part of the officers or crew of the Guardian should ever survive to get home, I have only to say their conduct after the fatal stroke against an island of ice was admirable and wonderful in everything that related to their duties considered either as private men or on his Majesty's Service. As there seems no possibility of my remaining many hours in this world, I beg leave to recommend to the consideration of the Admiralty a sister who if my conduct or service should be found deserving any memory their favour might be shown to her together with a widowed mother. I am Sir remaining with great respect Your ever Obedt & humble servt, E. Riou Issue 162 Mar 25, 2022 35

WITNESS TO A FIGHT IN 1838 REGULAR FEATURES

WITNESS TO A FIGHT IN 1838 There are few written accounts about the very early years of the Moreton Bay area. This week i found an article, published in the Sydney Australian newspaper on Saturday 22 December 1838 by a witness to an aboriginal fight. That was 184 years ago, when this was a remote and dangerous part of the world, and members of Bribee tribe were involved. It makes interesting reading, as the unnamed author is familiar with words, names, and places in the area. A unique insight into tribal customs and social relationships that readers may find interesting. The fight he describes is similar to a medieval tournament we are more familiar with, where honour and glory were at stake…. But often they died of wounds. The following is a transcript of the original article………...Not my words. 36

AUSTRALIAN –Sydney. Saturday 22 December 1838, page 3 Moreton Bay. (From a CORRESPONDENT.)

During my residence at Moreton Bay, I spent my leisure time in the bush shooting kangaroo and dog, and frequently passed in sight of camps of the Aborigines, some of whom were anxious to accompany me to the hunting grounds. My dogs were well trained, and I could depend on their killing if the day was a fair one. One evening, on my way to the Flats, between Cabbage Tree Creek and the Pine River, I observed two canoes crossing the river from the scrub on the south side, with two of the Kirkham tribe, as I supposed, in each condole or bark canoe. I suspected that something had occurred, as they had war-spears with them, or that a corroboree was to take place, so I waited until they crossed the river. I found it was Molroober, chief of the Kirkham tribe, and his brother Delackey, with two of the Amity Point tribe, and Paapoonyia. I ascertained that they were going to the Ponds, where some of Bribees and Pine River tribes had encamped, for the purpose of recovering a gin who had been stolen from them by a young man belonging to the former tribe and punishing him for stealing her. Although Molroober was chosen chief of his tribe on the death of his father, I had never heard of his having distinguished himself in a fight. I mean single combat when the combatants are equally matched, which is much more dangerous than a pullen pullen, or general fight, and calls for all his skill and energy to be the challenger. I at once made up my mind to accompany them, much against their wishes, and we proceeded. The sun had sunk behind the Range long ere we reached their camp, and although the blacks were very numerous, it was evident they would have willingly dispensed with the visit. They were received in silence, and on arrival, they commenced making a humpy or hut, a short distance from and nearly opposite to those belonging to their enemies. They were assisted by some gins, who brought them water and bungwall and returned to their own camp without speaking. The moon rose, and a more glorious night I never saw, the sky was cloudless, not a leaf moved all was quiet and peaceable, but from the anxiety depicted in the countenances of the fighting men of the opposite tribes, and the silence which reigned in their camp, it was clear something serious was to take place. I tried to engage their attention, but could not, and even the gins were unwilling to converse and told me not to wooller or talk. In the meantime, Molroober's friends were dressing him for battle, and his appearance when dressed was truly terrific. He had a piece of a rush, about six inches long through the cartilage of his nose, his body had been greased all over and rubbed with charcoal. The distinguishing mark of his tribe was made on his face with pipeclay and he wore a large tuft of the crest of the cockatoo in his hair, which was tied up in a large knot on the crown of his head. As he stood before the fire with his waddy in his right hand leaning on his war spear, he looked something more than human. After standing in a musing posture for some time, he walked into the opposite camp, with the air of a man confident of succeeding in the dangerous struggle he had courted. As soon as he reached the huts of the warriors he commenced singing the war-song of his tribe in a low plaintive and melancholy strain, which he increased gradually, till he became quite frantic, shrieking to the highest pitch of his voice, keeping time with his body, and occasionally shaking his war-club at the warriors, who were sitting motionless, looking on the ground, and appeared more like dead than living men. This occupied about half an hour, and he then returned to his own fire quite exhausted from the violence of his gesticulations. I spoke to him, but he would not deign to answer me, and stood by the fire, his head resting on his right shoulder, and from the Devil in his eye and the inclination of his head, it was quite clear that he anxiously waited for the result of his challenge. The moon was now occasionally obscured by clouds, and from the low wailing sound in the forest, I expected a storm, which I much regretted, fearing they would postpone the contact. Molroober who had waited upwards of half an hour, and whose patience was exhausted, took a boomerang out of his belt and threw it

amongst the tribe. All rose, men, women and children, the men seized their arms and ran towards Molroober throwing boomerangs at him, which he turned off with his shield or avoided. As it was quite dark the kippers got torches for them to fight by, and the women were running about shrieking and carrying their children out of the reach of the missiles. In less than a minute upwards of thirty torches, made of the bark of the tea tree were lit, and a circle was formed around Molroober. A strange black from the Bunyie Bunyie Mountains, who had been slightly wounded by the boomerang thrown by Molroober, stepped up. He was upwards of six feet high, possessed of much muscle and showed some good fighting points. The attitude of the men was singularly beautiful as they stood before each other, covering their bodies with their contars or shields, warding off the blows with great skill and without any advantage on either side for some time. Molroober who had evinced the greatest caution from the commencement of the fight, at length made a feint to strike his opponent on the back of the head, who rose his shield to ward off the blow, when Molroober jobbed the point of his waddy into his forehead and felled him to the ground. Paapoonyia, who had stood by the side of Molroober during the struggle, placed himself before his friend, and upbraided the Pine River tribe for permitting a tockeroo or strange black to fight for them, and told them that they were all women. A fine man belonging to Bribees, named Woorgan, attacked Paapoonyia with his waddy, who, although not more than eighteen years of age, showed that he was worthy of the tribe he belonged to and able to assist his friend, if necessary, for in less than two minutes he struck him senseless to the earth.

An old and chosen warrior of the tribe then challenged Molroober, telling him that the young man who had stolen his gin was not strong enough to fight him but that he would fight for him. They fought for some time with great desperation until their shields were broken, when they threw their waddies to their friends and drew their flint knives out of their belts, a long and desperate struggle ensued. Molroober was cut severely across the shoulder, which made him frantic, and after a most desperate effort he succeeded in getting his opponent in such a situation as lost him the use of his right hand, and he cut him from the shoulder to the loins, threw him down and held him by the hair with his face to the ground until he acknowledged he was beaten. They then retired to their respective camps, and Mulrooben had his wound dressed and a handful of dirt thrown into it. The man he last fought with sent him one of his daughters, and they were reconciled to each other and spent the remainder of the night corroborraing until the rain put a stop to their festivities. In the morning, Paapoonyia and a fine young gin were missing, and Molroober seemed much displeased at it, telling them he would muncull him for it, but at the same time, he told me that his indignation was all feigned. Poor Woorgan was severely hurt and was upwards of three months before he recovered from the effects of the blow he received. I never heard whether the Tockeroo recovered, but when I left the camp he was delirious, and I think he must have died as they were obliged to carry him away with them. Issue 162 Mar 25, 2022 37

The clocks change in Europe this weekend. But should they? Although the EU voted to abolish the practice from 2022, who knows if the decision will ever be implemented? But whether we spend Mothering Sunday in GMT or ‘daylight saving time’ doesn’t change the fact that Mercury is entering Aries, and Venus is converging with Saturn ahead of this week’s New Moon. It’s time to decide which exciting ideas are only flashes in the pan, and which require gentle nurturing and commitment.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 20)

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23 - Dec 21)

PISCES (Feb 20 - Mar20)

ARIES (Mar 21 - Apr 20)

Concentrate as hard as you can. Screw up your eyes and focus on what you want to achieve. Actually, you don’t have to do that! It’s just that, with Mercury moving into your sign, your mental faculties are being rebooted, and you’re more aware of the fact that the ability to create change stems from your imagination. As long as you put your ideas into action, any time you spend thinking will be fruitful. Just don’t forget to listen to your heart. A rebalance of your priorities will enable you to focus on what’s really important and nurturing. Right here, right now… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

Under normal circumstances, you’d easily be able to deal with whatever’s bothering you. After all, there’s nothing seriously wrong. It’s just that you’re experiencing a growing sense of pressure. You’ve had enough of something, and want to get it sorted so that you’re free to move on. With your ruler, Venus, linking with Saturn (the cosmic teacher), check that you’re not allowing yourself to get obsessive about this desire. If you take the pressure off, and allow the situation some space to unfold, it will resolve in a pleasing way. Especially for you… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

GEMINI (May 22 - Jun 22)

CANCER (Jun 23 - Jul 23)

LEO (Jul 24 - Aug 23)

LIBRA (Sept24 - Oct23)

SCORPIO (Oct 24 - Nov 22)

You’re made of different stuff to other people. You’re more conscientious and committed. You’re determined to stick with what you believe in, regardless of the pressure to settle for less. And you’re fussier about what you do (and don’t) want. Which means there’s no point trying to judge yourself by anyone else’s standards. Or in listening to someone else’s judgment of you! This week, as your ruler, Saturn, links with Venus, let go of what other people think. When it comes to a key issue, you’re absolutely in the right. Don’t miss out… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com The lyrics to an old pop song tell us that ‘there are more questions than answers’ and that ‘the more we find out, the less we know’. But when you think about it, maybe the opposite is true! Certainly these days, if we have a question and look online, we’ll be inundated with answers. Which suggests that when we’ve got an answer we like, there’s good reason to not ask any more questions! If you’re feeling happy enough about a recent choice you’ve made, stop doubting it. If you’re not, then just ask it again. This week, clarity is on offer. Ready now... completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

As your ruler, Mercury, moves into a new celestial home, it’s time to take some of your mental energy and channel it into your emotions. With so much turmoil going on around you, you’re feeling particularly aware of life’s injustices. There are ‘wrongs’ you want to address and gestures you want to make. Yet your logical side makes you wonder whether you’ll make any real difference. That’s why you need to invest in matters of the heart. If something feels right, it is right. Not only can you spread happiness, you’ll feel happier too. Unmissable gift… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

VIRGO (Aug 24 - Sept 23)

We love finding out about the lives of the rich and famous. We can’t get enough information about the gloss and glamour of celebrity lives. We’re even more interested when we see their imperfections; that they’re human and make mistakes just like we do. So, suppose we turn it around, and imagine ourselves as having special talents and unique qualities like the people we read about? This week, the New Moon puts you in the cosmic spotlight. Shine like the star you were meant to be and your outlook will be glossy and bright. Discover the inner you… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

Astrology books focus on the essential topics we all want to know about: love, health and wealth. These have always been the nuts and bolts of any astrologer’s job description. Maybe Nostradamus had the right idea – he conveyed mystery and intrigue by speaking in riddles that could be interpreted to mean just about anything! If I talk about finances in your forecast today, it’s with awareness of the economic challenges you’re dealing with. If you stay calm, and take sensible action, you can solve an immediate problem. A small amount of imagination can seriously change your outlook on life. Like chilli powder, just a pinch adds spiciness to a bland situation. All that’s needed, this week, is a piece of timely, clever insight. The New Moon indicates that a brilliant idea’s on its way, which will lead to developments that affect you and the people closest to you. For too long now, you’ve been worrying about something you have no control over. Like a fire-breathing dragon, it has caused anxiety and fear. Here comes a way to put it to rest and move on. Does the world owe us a living? Traditionally, the answer is ‘no’. We’re meant to work hard. We’re not supposed to be entitled to anything. Yet we’re surrounded by abundance in the natural world. And human creativity and intelligence is always reaching into new, uncharted territory. The world may not owe us anything, but the cosmos is more than willing to give us a helping hand when we approach it in the right way. AQUARIUS (Jan21 - Feb 19)

As Venus converges with your traditional ruler, Saturn, it’s time to reach for the brightest and best in every area of life. You’re already doing this? Then reach for even better and even brighter! Do everything you can to honour your uppermost ideals and your highest principles. Value the truth. It’s not always easy to follow a path of honesty. There are times when it’s easier to be discreet than forthright. But while diplomacy is a good trait, don’t let it impact on your integrity. If something’s only ‘nearly’ good enough, that’s not enough. Oscar’s gift… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

TAURUS (Apr 21 - May 21)

What sort of admiration are you looking for? If you want universal approval, you’re going to have to change your style to something milder. You’re a Leo! It’s just not possible for you to be middle-of-the-road. You’re never going to be everyone’s cup of tea. People tend to love and admire you, or not! But would you really have it any other way? If you’re trying to please someone right now, it’s time to stop and work out why you’re going to such an effort. This week, it’s by making less effort that you’ll enjoy more success. You’re worth it. Our gift to you… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

No matter where in the world you travel, you’d always find a way to communicate. It’s easy to ask ‘where’s the bus stop?’ and get a reply. But you don’t always find it easy to meet people who really understand you – even when you’re close to home. It’s hard to talk about feelings and needs. This week, as Mercury changes signs, it brings an opportunity to really communicate. It’s a chance to be heard (and to listen) to someone who’s got something important to share. The insight will help you make a key decision. A brilliant offer… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

earning about Astronomy doesn't have to be a daunting experience. An easy way to get started is by stargazing. You don't need expensive equipment, only a cloudfree sky in a dark location and a blanket. Also, don't forget insect repellant! People have been observing the stars for thousands of years. The culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples dates back more than 50,000 years. Making Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples the oldest astronomers on earth. The Gubbi Gubbi, traditional custodians of the region, were not astronomers. But there are records from other First Nations language groups throughout Australia. A well-known indigenous constellation is The Emu in the Sky. Outlined, not by stars, but dark dust lanes from the Milky Way core. The Emu begins at the Coal Sack Nebula, the head of the emu and extends down

to The Great Rift, the body, and feet. Other indigenous constellations are, Julpan, forming the shape of a canoe. Named by the Yolnu language group of northern Australia and The Seven Sisters. Other well-known constellations such as Orion the Hunter, come from ancient Middle Eastern, Greek, and Roman cultures. Learning constellations can help locate various noteworthy stars in our night sky. Stars are large balls of plasma, held together by their gravity, they appear in different colours to the eye such as orange, red, yellow, blue or white. Our Sun, which is yellow in visual light, is not the largest or brightest known star in the universe. The brightest is currently Sirius (pictured), part of the Canis Major constellation. It is a binary system of two stars. A binary system is when two stars are gravitationally bound, orbiting each other. This system has Sirius A, a white dwarf and Sirius B.

Sirius A is 20 times more luminous than the Sun. Alpha Centauri is the closest known star to earth, only 4.3 light-years away. Alpha Centauri is a three-star system. Comprising of Alpha CentauriA, Alpha Centauri B and Proxima Centauri. Proxima Centauri is 4.2 light-years away. Appearing as one star to the naked eye, they are in the constellation Centaurus. While Sirius may be the brightest and Alpha Centauri the closest, they're not the largest. That prize goes to UY Scuti. Located towards the center of our galaxy within the constellation Scutum. About 9,500 light-years from Earth. It has a radius of 1.1883 billion km. Its volume is 5 billion times that of the sun! Its photosphere, a star's outer shell, would engulf the entire orbit of Jupiter! UY Scuti is a red supergiant and will go supernova as it continues to fuse helium. UY Scuti is not observable to the naked eye.

This month, stargazers can look for these recognisable stars. Acrux, Gacrux, Mimosa and Imai. These four stars make up the constellation Crux also known as The Southern Cross. Castor and Pullox in the Gemini constellation. Betelgeuse, Orion's shoulder, or Rigel the knee of the Centaur. If you're stargazing from April 16th to the 25th you may witness the Lyrids Meteor Shower. Which peaks on the 22nd to the 23rd. It will produce around 20 meteors per hour. Best viewed after midnight or in the pre-dawn hours. Pictured are the stars Antares and Sirius and an open star cluster the Sprinter Cluster. COMPETITIONS Kathy Vincent

Yes, it is that time of the year again and despite the wettest summer on record and various croquet courts underwater, competitions have still taken place. I have written previously about the history of the Mary Masters Competition which took place again. On the 10th of March, the Ricochet Pennant team beat Coolum with 3 wins to nil well done Bernadette Luck, Joy Rule and Jenny Walker In order to try to improve their croquet skills, a group of Bribie players went to a golf croquet development training session at Headland Buderim which proved very helpful, and several clever tricks were learnt! Traditional Funerals sponsored the Association division 4 competition when Al Keetman

what a great team

and Bernadette Luck were winners for Bribie. The Croquet Association of Queensland Men’s singles saw Bribie’s Shelly was a star Denis Green peformer! runner up and Sue Green runner up in the CAQ Eights at Caloundra. Well done to everyone. The Darling Downs Tournament was held in Toowoomba at the beginning of March. Last year

Semi Finals

only two members attended. This year eight members tried their luck. This coincided with the floods, so it was quite an expedition to get there! Shelly Moar reached the semi-finals in the singles. Two members Maggie Lawson and Kathy

Vincent reached the semi-finals and then the finals in the doubles but were really excited to have reached that point and were happy to be runners up. But there was something special about the Bribie players. Everyone attending the tournament wanted to leave as soon as the event was over as we had played in heavy rain and thunder and lightning. The players reaching the finals didn’t have their teams there to encourage them as they all left. But not the Bribie players (who had the furthest to travel through difficult conditions.) They stayed to the end and encouraged and cheered their members on. To me that was what Bribie Club represent, true sportsmanship supporting their team to the very end. Great fun. Come along and see for yourself call 3408 6411. Issue 162 Mar 25, 2022 41

TIPS FOR LOOKING AFTER YOUR DOG

APPLAUD YOUR PET WHEN THEY SUCCESSFULLY RELIEVE THEMSELVES OUTSIDE Potty training can be difficult, especially with stubborn dog breeds. Applaud and cheer your dog on when they go outside and do their business every time and they’ll eagerly continue this behaviour until it becomes a habit. For dogs who are learning to be house-trained, bring treats outside with you and immediately reward your dog after they finish peeing or pooping somewhere you approve of. If you do this every time, and take your puppy out frequently enough (including after every meal, after every drink of water, and at least every 4-6 hours) housebreaking will be significantly easier.

MAKE TRAINING A GAME Switch up the treats, rewards, and praise. If they view training as a game, rather than something they are scolded during, they will have more fun and you’ll see better results. You may also find that

your dog responds better to different types of rewards through this process. When training, always reward positive behaviour with treats, a clicker, pets, and/or verbal praise and simply ignore bad behaviour. They will learn if they want a reward they must do what you’ve asked of them.

CONSISTENT TRAINING IS KEY Decide what the “house rules” for your dog are and stick with them! Will your dog be allowed on furniture, in all parts of the house, or around the family during dinnertime? Stick with the same training commands and rules while training your dog to prevent confusion. Make sure all members of your family are on the same page and agree to consistently abide by the rules to avoid confusing your pup or perpetuating bad behaviour.

IMMEDIATELY CORRECT BAD BEHAVIOUR Dogs have a short memory and if you scold them for doing something wrong five minutes later, they will not correlate the scolding with the bad behaviour. Reprimand them only if you catch them in the act. On the other hand, always give your dog positive feedback and rewards right away for good behaviour to encourage the repetition of this behaviour.

allergies. Face and hair oils, sweat, drool, and other dirt can also seep through pillowcases and get trapped in your pillows, causing yellow stains on the surface. These substances may even clog your pores and trigger acne breakouts or rashes for people with sensitive skin. Frequently washing pillowcases and pillows with a gentle detergent can help to alleviate build-up and replacing pillows regularly can offer a fresh start that won’t irritate the skin.

SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR

PILLOWS?

Experts agree that getting a good night’s sleep is essential for physical and mental health. One way to set yourself up for better sleep is by optimizing your bedroom environment and bedding. This includes maintaining your pillow and replacing it when necessary, so it always provides you with the proper amount of support. Because we spend so many hours in bed with our heads resting on our pillows, it is also essential to be mindful of pillow quality and cleanliness. Not regularly switching out pillows can lead to allergic reactions, breakouts, and neck pain.

Generally, you’ll be able to tell

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO REPLACE PILLOWS

Most experts recommend replacing pillows every 1 to 2 years. Doing so helps to ensure that you’re using pillows that are supportive, clean, and free of allergens. It is also important to care for the pillows you use to ensure their longevity.

support you need. Just as with

pillows. If you’re waking up with a sore neck or if you’re unable to find a comfortable sleeping position, it might mean that your pillow is no longer providing the a mattress, you should replace pillows when they start sagging or developing lumps. It might also be time to look into new pillows when you notice excessive yellowing, or if your allergies are

An old pillow can accumulate allergens like dust mites, fungus, mould, and pet dander. For some people, sleeping near those allergens can cause a runny or stuffy nose, itchy skin, and irritated eyes that may impact sleep quality. Replacing your pillows frequently or investing in a pillow that is designed to be antimicrobial and breathable may help prevent pillow-related

Perhaps most importantly, pillows are meant to support your neck and head as you sleep, relieving muscle tension and promoting healthy spinal alignment. A pillow that has sagged or flattened over time won’t provide the necessary support, and you might wake up feeling sore or unrefreshed.

PILLOW CARE

Prolonging the lifespan of a pillow requires regular care and cleaning. A pillow’s materials can influence care instructions and longevity, so it is important to pay attention to the type of pillow you buy and follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.

HOME AND GARDEN NEW RESEARCH REVEALS THE STATE OF AUSTRALIA’S SLEEP HEALTH ON WORLD SLEEP DAY RESEARCH RELEASED ON THE 17TH OF MARCH, TO MARK THE 15TH ANNUAL WORLD SLEEP DAY, REVEALS THAT JUST HALF (53 PER CENT) OF AUSTRALIANS ARE SATISFIED WITH THEIR CURRENT LEVEL OF SLEEP HEALTH WHILE THREE IN TEN (30 PER CENT) ARE DISSATISFIED. The YouGov research, commissioned by FESS®, a non-medicated saline nasal spray, suggests that Australians are most likely to believe that sleep health (57 per cent) can be negatively impacted by nasal congestion, compared to overall feeling of well-being (50 per cent) and ability to exercise (43 per cent). Men are more likely than women to say they are satisfied with their sleep health (58 per cent compared to 49 per cent), and conversely, women are more likely to be dissatisfied (35 per cent compared to 25 per cent). Working Aussies are almost twice as likely as those not working to say they are satisfied with their sleep health (60 per cent compared to 33 per cent). Mirroring this trend, older Aussies aged over 50 are more likely than their younger counterparts aged 18 to 34 to say that they are dissatisfied with their sleep health (36 per cent compared to 26 per cent).

Married Aussies are more likely than those not married to be satisfied with their sleep health (59 per cent compared to 46 per cent). Additionally, those who say they are satisfied with their current level of overall wellness are significantly more likely than those who are dissatisfied to also say they are satisfied with their sleep health (74 per cent compared 22 per cent). Nasal congestion can have a significant negative impact on people’s lives, increasing the likelihood of sleep problems, fatigue, and daytime sleepiness. The Sleep Health Foundation highlights the importance of sleep and breathing to our overall health and wellbeing: “The Sleep Health Foundation’s core work is to raise the awareness of the importance of sleep. Sleep is an essential pillar of health alongside diet and exercise. Quality of life can be improved via better sleep and quality of sleep can be improved by ensuring that any sleep-disordered breathing is assessed and treated. We always encourage people, from infants through to older age, to have their sleep assessed by a sleep physician for any sleep-related breathing difficulties persist.”

Meet Jack Martin, Bribie Islands Area Manager for Coochie Hydrogreen. If you see Jack around the area, be sure to say hello and give him a wave! Feel free to contact Jack & the Coochie Hydrogreen team by calling 1800 245 955. Follow "Coochie Hydrogreen Bribie Island" on Facebook to stay informed with the latest information.

- Have you spent hundreds of dollars on weed control products? - Are you taking up storage space in your shed with harsh chemicals? - Have you spent hours applicating fertilising and weed control products only to end up pulling the weeds out or killing your grass in the process? Coochie Hydrogreen can make these dilemmas a thing of the past. By joining our Lawn Care Program (LCP), you will receive our unique 6-in-1 treatments, designed specifically for your lawn. Our treatments contain a mixture of liquid fertilisers, organic soil conditioners and soil moisture retainers to encourage strong, healthy growth in your lawn as well as spot treating for weeds, pests and diseases to give your lawn a lush, weed free appearance year-round. Our Lawn Care Program consists of 6 visits annually every 8-10 weeks. Every other month your local technician will stop by to apply a seasonal mix of our products to give your lawn a boost of nutrients needed to thrive throughout the season. Your local technician will also monitor and treat your lawn for any

weeds, pests, and diseases that may be showing their heads since the last visit. If you ever have any questions or concerns, call your local area manager Jack Martin and he will pop out to discuss &/or address the concern free of charge.

LAWN GRUB SEASON Lawn grub is a name that covers a wide variety of creepy crawlies that invade your lawn. Scarab Grubs, Mealy bug, Army Worm and African Black Beetle are just a few of the lawn pests that we see in unprotected lawns each year. HERE’S SOME SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR:

1. BROWN PATCHES IN YOUR LAWN Lawn grubs feed off the root system of your turf, this prevents all the nutrients in your soil getting to the turf leaf so brown patches in your lawn can indicate that grubs are present. .

2. WASP ACTIVITY If Army Worm are attacking your lawn, you will notice large orange wasps start to hover around your turf. They are looking for the Army Worm & Army Worm Pupa to lay their egg's in.

3. MOTH ACTIVITY When Army Worm mature they turn into moths, these moths then lay eggs in your turf, under your gutters and in every corner of your property, starting the life cycle starts all over again. If you see lots of moths hovering above your lawn it’s likely you have had or will have lawn grubs soon.

4. INCREASED BIRD ACTIVITY ON YOUR LAWN If birds are pecking at your lawn a lot more lately, it’s likely there’s some juicy grubs in your turf that they’re snacking on.

HOW TO STOP LAWN GRUBS The best way to deal with Lawn Grubs is to apply preventative treatments every 8-10 weeks during the grub season. Jack says " This has been the worst Lawn Grub season that we have experienced in over a decade. The last season this bad was in 2011 around the time of the last floods. People should know that we are not out of the grub season yet, and given the recent rain and humidity that we have had, we may yet see another surge of lawn grubs this season".

Great Gardening Ideas from

B R I BEI E N GARD

CENTRE

If you're looking to create or transform your gardens at home, here's how we at Bribie Garden Centre can help. STEP 1 IS PLANNING - mapping out the area. Decide where all the features will go - seating, water features/ birdbaths, statues, garden beds, etc. That will help break one mammoth task into small, manageable sections. You can then frame your landscape with taller plants around the outside. Lilly Pillys is a perfect start for screening, and it's also good to add variety. A Fraser Island Apple tree or two, and the beautiful NSW Christmas bushes are great examples. Garden beds under screening plants are a great idea. The beds catch leaf litter which makes a perfect mulch for smaller plants that complement the screen above and behind. Choose your plants to match their space (sunny, shady, desired height, etc). It's also good to have a variety of colours to break up the green. Ruby reds, cordylines, and roses are

perfect for this. Some smaller, colourful plants also look great at the front, complementing your garden edging or growing among rocks. We always have a wide variety of colourfully flowering plants. A lot of gardens will merge with your outdoor entertainment area and indoor family rooms. So, some shade-loving plants are a valuable addition in keeping a lush, relaxed feel in these spaces too. Planter boxes and pots also look great in these transition spaces between the garden and your home. For soil in these boxes and pots, the Rocky

Point range of premium potting mix, soils and mulches have become a favourite thanks to them being rich and fertile - a winner for all plants. Or if you're having bulk soil delivered, keep some fertilisers on hand and spread sugar cane mulch. It is a great weed suppressor; moisture retainer and it seeps goodness into your soil over time. Also, ask us about our range of garden ornaments such as birdbaths and statues. We're always here and happy to help at Bribie Garden Centre, 50 Verdoni Street, Bellara. Open 7 days, 9 to 5 Mon – Fri, Sat & Sun 9 to 4.

FISHING, BOATING AND ADVENTURES

It’s not easy to write a decent fishing report, when there’s still plenty of cleaning up still being done, after the extraordinary weather that extended along the Eastern Seaboard of Australia. Not everyone has the luxury of time to waste, chasing a feed of fish. The Pumicestone Passage also has a bit of cleaning up to do – the waters are very discoloured and lots of flotsam is still floating out there. Fishability’s men’s group brought in a wheel-rim and tyre and a 50-litre bag of potting mix. Phil and his crew found another wheel-rim and tyre, a 10-litre chemical drum (sealed, thank goodness) as well as other mess floating in the Passage, even two weeks after the event! Further continuation of La Nina weather conditions can be expected, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, but “latest oceanic observations suggest this La Niña event is past its peak, with a return to neutral … forecast late in the southern hemisphere autumn. The weakening La Niña will continue to influence ... wetter than average outlooks for parts of northern and eastern Australia.” In other words, the worst of that weather may be over, but there’s probably some rain in it still.

All in all, that means the fishing can only improve! Before the rain-bomb (don’t we love that word!?!), there was still plenty of snapper to be had, especially on the south side of the bridge. Lynda and Frank were drifting on the incoming tide, near the Bongaree water tower, and caught three keeper sweetlip. Over the top of the tide, they anchored and burleyed up – and found themselves among loads of under-sized snapper – good fun but nothing big enough to take home.

Word is out, though, that now the big snapper is being caught – really big ones. A night on the Ripples at Pacific Harbour or the mouth of the Bongaree lock might be a good idea – light lines, lures or prawns, and a bit of patience. Dennis didn’t get onto any giant snapper but did catch two (36cm and 40cm) near the ripples, using prawns. He also says that he’s been catching lots of 40-45cm grunter around the Avon wreck. Big flatheads, too, are turning up after the rain. Sean used a hardbody lure, trolling near Turner’s Camp, to bring in a 60cm flatty. He got onto a couple of flounders, as well. Jayde also landed a flathead at the same spot. Josh and his mate had a night at Bongaree jetty when they caught two flatheads, a sweetlip, shovelnose and a 65cm estuary cod. Steve and Cody actually netted a flathead and an estuary cod together, when they were trying for prawns near the Avon wreck. There were four fat mud crabs in their crab pots as well, at the end of the day. Mudcrabs are being found in good numbers further up the Passage. Peter was saying that setting pots between

Gallagher’s Gutter and Poverty Creek has been working for him – loads of big muddies! After rain like we’ve had, the freshwater sits on top of the saltwater and the gutters have a much higher level of salinity, so the mud crabs move into that saltier water, which is where you need to put your pots!

Last month, I wrote about cast-netting for prawns. Rob stopped by a couple of days later, to tell me about his recent netting “adventure”. Having never netted before, Rob bought a “10ft top-pocket castnet”, (a bargain at $265??) and took himself off to the Caboolture River, after having a few practice throws. He did see some activity on the sounder, threw a not-great cast and netted 20 prawns. Taking advice from another couple of netters, he headed up around the bend

a little but found nothing. Coming back down the river, Rob had another throw and caught something – big – heavy – immoveable. Even days later, his hands were still a mess, after trying to get that net up. Rob reckons those 20 prawns were the most expensive he’s ever eaten! Maybe he should stick to buying them from the trawlers…..

PART 4

ON THE ROAD

THE VILLA by David Horrocks

Finally, we drove into the small Spanish coastal town that had been our target for what seemed like a very extended journey. Our motoring troubles hopefully seemed to be behind us. Commer bus was running very well, the troops were all in good spirits. Gone after the finishing of the box of Penguin biscuits by the passengers and the life-saving work of the old guy who worked on our engine was the poor morale and mumblings of mutiny. We were ready to party. Well, these times when the story takes

place were before the advent of the internet and ready access to online photos, video walk-around of properties and other instant checks now just taken for granted when booking accommodation. Back in the day we just had brochure pictures and ‘real estate’ descriptions of potential to go

by to judge our selected holiday accommodation. Well, ‘Villa’ is a word that can be taken to mean different things I suppose. We had visions of something much more upmarket than the place turned out to be. The pics did show some of the attributes, but they also failed to show any of the shortcomings. We tried to sort things with a local real estate agent but a shrug of the shoulders and a ‘no speaka da English’ resulted in our just having to try to make the best of things or blow our money. We were all young, enthusiastic to be playboys and playgirls; international travellers ready to overlook difficulties and deficiencies.

ON THE ROAD So, we didn’t really have a view of an azure sea from our balcony or thousand count bed linen to sleep on or the kitchen of your dreams cooking facilities but what the heck they had our money; trying to get anything back looked like a hopeless cause so onward and upward was the cry. One eye-opener or ‘shocker’ of an experience was when one of our troops, Simon by name went to open the door of the fridge. Now Simon was a solidly built lad, probably the build and weight of a middleweight wrestler. As he grabbed the door handle there was a noise and a very rapid movement as he careered across the room ending up sitting on the floor against the opposite wall, a ‘shocked’ look on his face. ‘It’s live’ he said. Looking at the wiring running to the fridge it was a bit ‘all over the place’ with wires hanging loose. From our previous attempts at the real estate office, we decided the best course was just to unplug the appliance before touching the door handle. From that moment on Simon’s new nickname was ‘Kill the lights man’ as he disconnected everything electrical before making bodily contact with it. The electrical power in Spain then was 110 volt and not the more deadly 240 volt but still dangerous of course. In subsequent visits to the peninsular in later years none of these electrical shortcomings (pardon the pun) seemed to be still apparent. Having said

that we did stay in a recently renovated hotel in Barcelona not too long ago when in the middle of the night the bathroom plumbing backed up with horrible noises and even more horrible smells. The management assured us that nothing like this had ever happened before – and there are fairies at the bottom of our garden mother - Oh the joys of travel! From our Villa, we ventured out to all the local fleshpots, mainly little bars some with an area for dancing to music emitting from Boom Box type little sound systems. But there were bars with guitarists where you could sing along or play the drums on the upturned wine barrels. There were people from all over Europe doing what we were doing, sampling the sun, cheap booze, and company of the opposite sex. We found it lots of fun and met all manner of interesting people. I had one experience of note in that I met a rather stunning young lady from Finland. Now the Finish language is difficult, even to pronounce. I tried all ways to try to make an attempt to pronounce her name with the nearest version sounding like ‘Oily’; this in no way suited the owner. In the end, she looked at me directly over lowered eyelashes and said in a low-pitched voice, ‘They call me pussycat’. Now I’m not sure if I actually fell off the bar stool or whether it just felt like I had! We did have one run-in with the black hat

Guardia Civil. Late one night on the way back to the Villa one of our girl companions had imbibed excessively in the ‘Flying Dog’ drink – remember the mix of local champagne and cheap red wine I told about in episode three – well she thought it rather tasty and ended up staggering between two others to get home. A couple of the Guardia stopped us as we approached a beach. They looked to be menacing as we tried to convince them that she’d been taken ill. I don’t think they believed us but maybe thought it all too much trouble to bother so walked off and left us alone. All too soon the days passed, and it was time to set off back towards the cross channel steamer. We tidied up the place, bade farewell and left a large note on the fridge, warning whoever came next of the danger – hopefully they understood English! Having only used the ‘Bus’ for whizzing around the beaches and bars during our Villa days we still harboured misgivings about the long journey ahead of us, so we plotted a departure time to allow for further misadventure en route. As it transpired the machine performed faultlessly and we arrived in Calais about two boat departure times too soon. Sounds silly but we were rather disappointed and bored by the uneventful return journey, but we weren’t game to attempt a stopover and more importantly, we’d spent all our money!

COMMUNITY

CRIME REPORT

BRIBIE ISLAND WRAP December 2021 Marcg

www.mypolice.qld.gov.au/moreton SCAMS ON FLOOD VICTIMS.......AND DONATORS

Australians have been urged to brace for a 'scammers wave' as fraudsters take advantage of our communities’ goodwill in the wake of our flood disasters. Victims and donators are warned to watch out for cyber criminals who do set up fake 'account' sites to mimic relief funds, insurers, charities, businesses, and government agencies. These sites are there only to attract your attention where they are seen to be offering to be there to help victims and donators. It is advisable to check that the organization that you are intending to work with is registered and that your unexpected random phone calls and emails are from genuine organizations. Be very wary of anyone asking for your personal information and details and stop and consider what information they are asking for from you. Businesses are encouraged to register for Pay ID to assure customers they are legitimate. Organizations and businesses will often use a Reference Number when a transaction takes place and will often quote the time of the transaction; you are also encouraged to ask questions and companies and charities will welcome some feedback from their clients. It works both ways. But, if you do think that you are being scammed, stop now..... put the phone down on your suspected scammer and phone your bank immediately and tell them (as short and as concisely as possible) and work with them....... they will know how to handle this situation. They and the Federal Police are experienced in these matters. (Unfortunately!)

Banksia Beach Neighbourhood Watch Notification of the closure of the Banksia Beach Branch. Due to the lack of interest and only a small number of people attending the two monthly Meetings, we have now had to close the branch. Data from Services Australia reveal that more than 650 attempts to fraudulently claim welfare and disaster payments in the last two years....... and these are the ones that got caught...... There was one man who allegedly used 58 false and stolen identities to thieve $35,000 in disaster payments meant for bush fire victims. Be generous and be cautious and do not become a statistic and thank you from all whom you do help. Crime Stoppers Vols: 1300 309 355 Report a Crime: 1800 333 000 Email: crimestoppersqld.com.au
