Dear Readers,

This issue we are celebrating Father’s Day. We have a look at how Father’s Day came about, what changes the role of fatherhood has made over the years and lots of hints and tips for our dads to take care of themselves. We have even thrown in some very bad dad jokes to celebrate the occasion! Make sure if you are intending on dining out for Father’s Day to book now so you won’t be disappointed! It would be great to see our venues full up on Father’s day to help them get back on their feet after another lockdown. It also makes a more pleasant experience when you don’t have to cook or clean up, so you can focus your time on spending it with your dad! Or grab a platter from Village Deli, some seafood from Savige’s and some dessert from Big Bun Bakery and head to the beach! I am sure you will also find some great gifts locally for your dad. Mayyada Bazar and Bribie Bait and Tackle have a great range of things that your dad would love, so pop in and check them out. Also if you can’t come up with any ideas, gift vouchers from our local retailers are sure to be a winner! No matter what you do, just make sure you enjoy the day and spending time with your family. I would like to take this opportunity to say “Happy Father’s Day” To all the dads, stepdads and grandfathers out there, may you all have a sensational day. Happy Father’s Day to my Dad, I love you very much and I believe I have the best dad in the world!! Lastly, I would like to point out there was an error in an article we recently did about Martin White. Mr White was not a war veteran as reported. I extend my apologies for any confusion.

ITAMIN D

Every time your muscles move, they use vitamin D. plus, this vitamin keeps your immune system strong and helps your body absorb calcium. Good sources: milk and fatty fish. Some brands of cereal, orange juice, soy beverages, yogurt, and margarine are fortified with vitamin D (check the label).

F

OLATE

We read a lot about women taking folate, buy guys need it, too! To use protein, make DNA, and form healthy red blood cells, your body needs folate (also called folic acid and folacin). This B vitamin also may help prevent unhealthy changes in sperm that are linked to chromosomal abnormalities in children. Good sources: spinach, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, beans, nuts, and liver.

C

ALCIUM

This mineral supports healthy muscles, nerves, and bones. It’s especially important that men in their 20s get enough calcium to develop strong, dense bones. Good sources: milk; yogurt; cheese; canned salmon and sardines with soft, edible bones; dark green leafy vegetables; and calcium-fortified cereals and juices (check the label).

V

HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY

M

ITAMIN C

Enlargement of the prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH) is common in older men and causes problems with urination. Eating fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C is associated with a lower risk for BPH. Good sources: green and red peppers, kiwifruit, oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, potatoes, tomatoes, and broccoli.

P

OTASSIUM

Potassium helps combat the blood pressure-raising effects of sodium. That makes it a key nutrient for keeping blood vessels healthy and preventing heart disease as men age. Good sources: spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, melon, prunes, raisins, oranges, bananas, milk, yogurt, and tuna.

V

AGNESIUM

Many men, especially AfricanAmerican men, don’t get enough of this mineral. Besides supporting healthy muscles, nerves, and bones, magnesium may boost your immune system and prevent heart disease. Good sources: spinach and other green leafy vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds.

Z

INC

Men who are vegetarian often come up short on zinc. This mineral helps make proteins throughout the body, fights infection, and heals wounds. Good sources: red meat, seafood (especially oysters), and poultry. Beans and whole grains provide some zinc, but it isn’t absorbed as well as the zinc in meat.

ITAMIN A

Besides supporting healthy eyes and boosting your immune system, foods high in vitamin A may lower your risk for prostate cancer. Good sources of vitamin A: milk, cheese, salmon, broccoli, carrots, green leafy vegetables, squash, cantaloupe, mangoes, and apricots.

P

sychological research across families from all ethnic backgrounds suggests that fathers' affection and increased family involvement help promote children's social and emotional development. Today’s fathers are not the way their dads used to be. Just a generation gap has brought up a huge change in their roles. Though it is still a little blurred, you can easily see a modern-day father being more involved in his kid’s life. The shift has taken place from a strict traditional dad whose focus was about giving the financial support to the family to current days expressive and caring fathers who love spending time with their children.

FAMILY FOCUS We can all remember our fathers going off to work and coming home late. There may have been little interaction, playtime or conversation in the evenings. There are still many fathers today who do work long hours, but many dads now try to spend time as much time as they can with their children. They want to be more than just the economic provider.

FLEXIBLE WORKING Some dads are now working shorter hours or part-time to spend more time with their family. Since the 1990s, the number of dads using flexible working arrangements has doubled. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), around 30% of dads took advantage of flexible working hours to care for their children who were under

12. The number of dads who worked from home to care for their children rose from 7% to 14%.

STAY-AT-HOME DADS There is a perception that stay-at-home dads are on the increase, but this is still fairly rare. The Australian Institute of Family Studies reports that there are around 68,500 families with stay-at-home dads, which represents 4% of two-parent families. For some, staying at home is an economic decision (e.g. looking for work) rather than a lifestyle choice. Gen Y dads are supposedly different to dads of the past, according to research. While dads of previous generations were good at handy things like building a cubby house, fixing a tap or a punctured tyre, fathers under 30 are much less likely to do this. However, the younger generation fathers are more likely to do things like nappy changes, cake baking, washing and do the school drop off. Nowadays, it is common to see a dad playing with his kid in the park, helping him in completing his homework and reading bedtime stories. This care-giving, soft, and tender side of fathers is just adorable. The way they have adjusted to the role of a nurturer is commendable and has a significant impact on their kids’ lives. Even the science has proved this. As per some studies, children who receive more affection and love from their fathers are less likely to develop behavioural issues in the future.

How Fathers Day Began

F

ather’s Day is celebrated every September in Australia. The day gives thanks to all that dads do for us every day. It celebrates the diversity of what it means to be a father, and gives dad a reason to kick back and relax.

You may think that Father's Day is a modern invention, but the truth is that a Babylonian youth named Elmesu carved the first known Father's Day card in clay nearly 4,000 years ago. His special message wished his father good health and a long life. Fortunately, modern cards are a bit easier to fit in the mail box! Mother's Day and William Jackson Smart of Spokane, Washington were the inspiration for an official day to celebrate Father’s Day in the United States. Mr. Smart was a widower who raised his six children after his wife died giving birth to the youngest. He was a single parent for 21 years. This may not seem amazing in the 21st century, but in the 1800s it was unheard of for a man to raise children alone...and even today being a single parent of six young children is heroic! Smart’s daughter, Mrs. Sonora Smart-Dodd (Mrs. John Bruce Dodd), got the idea for Father’s Day in 1909 while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at her church. She encouraged local churches to institute a Father's Day observance the following year on a Sunday in June, the month of her father’s birthday. Through her efforts, interest in the celebration of Father’s Day grew and spread to other cities, states and countries. She also encouraged wearing roses on Father's Day in honour of fathers. A red rose was worn for fathers who were still living and a white rose honoured fathers who had died.

HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY Has come a long way from the days when your father would wash his face with a withered bar of soap and cover up shaving nicks with bits of toilet paper. Today, there are an overwhelming amount of products specially formulated to meet the needs of the stubborn (and stubbly) male epidermis. But navigating your way through the glut of grooming goods out there doesn’t have to be intimidating, and it shouldn’t be fussy either; a winning skin care regimen should be swift and simple to ensure that you'll actually follow it.

CLEANSE

MEN’S Skin Care

If you do nothing else, cleansing is the single most important thing you can do for your face. It should be the basis of your skin care regimen, but that doesn’t mean reaching for a simple bar of soap (which can overcompensate and leave your skin dryer than a desert). Men’s skin typically has large pores and very active sebaceous glands. Neglecting to wash away the excess oil and dirt can clog

SALE

pores, which leaves the skin prone to breakouts. A basic gel works just fine, but not all facial cleansers are created equal. Look for one that is strong enough to cut through the grease and yet gentle and affordable enough to be used at least once a day.

MOISTURISE Skin care for most men starts and stops with a basic bar of soap or cleanser. Even if you happen to live in a sauna, skin can get dry after showering and, over time that godforsaken process known as ageing makes it lose elasticity. Showering and shaving open up pores and allow precious water to escape, but a light moisturiser can fix everything. It replenishes the skin’s moisture content and prevents razor burn. A moisturiser with SPF will also provide a critical shield against the sun.

PROTECT YOUR EYES The soft, thin layer of skin that surrounds the eye is especially prone to developing creases and crinkles long before other parts of the body begin to show

their age. All of this can be prevented with regular use of an eye cream. It smooths and protects the skin, but requires serious commitment and proper usage. Applying eye cream once in a blue moon does nothing, and against all common sense, it shouldn’t be put on the soft skin underneath the eye. Instead, eye cream needs to be dabbed gently on the edge of the bone around the eye to maximise effectiveness and prevent irritation. It will slowly absorb and spread to the fragile areas that need it most.

PROTECT YOUR LIPS The skin here is incredibly thin and prone to severe dryness, cracking, bleeding, and burning from exposure to the elements. That’s because the lips lack both oil glands to keep them naturally moist and melanin to provide protection against harmful UV rays. A little dryness and flaking every now and then sounds like no big deal, but over time the combination of sun exposure, stress and a small cut can lead to nasty cold sores.

When Mum was rushed to the Prince Charles Hospital recently, I was so desperate to see her, that when Dad picked her up four nights later, I was naughty again, jumping out of the car, (as you might remember I did in March.) But as I hardly hump my toys any more, the vets having removed my manhood, I sat down immediately Dad called out “Stay!” Mum described how beautifully

everyone had treated her at the Hospital. So as soon as we arrived home at night, I wrote my letter below and sent it to Cardiac Ward 2, before sliding right into my igloo against the herringbone headboard of my super king size bed. But I do let Mum and Dad sleep on the right and left of me, so I can keep a good eye on them, as I’m now the man of the house, just having had my first birthday.

RESIDENTS ENJOY PEACE OF MIND AT SEASONS MANGO HILL WITH

With the last year and a half leaving many seniors reconsidering their living options, Seasons Mango Hill offers a unique take on traditional retirement living with their ‘try before you buy’ offer. Research suggests that moving to a new house is in the top five most stressful events in a person’s life. By offering the experience to come in and trial the community lifestyle and their new home, Seasons is aiming to eliminate as much of this stress and uncertainty from their future resident’s lives. Cheryl Evans, Sales Consultant at the community, says “By taking up our ‘try before you buy’ offer, prospective residents can experience first-hand what life would be like for them at Mango Hill. They can meet their future neighbours and share a meal with them and take part in our activities. It is truly unique and provides peace of mind for people knowing they have made the right choice.” Throughout a “try before you buy” stay, seniors will enjoy the privacy of their own

HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY self-contained, fully furnished, luxury apartment for a minimum three-night stay. All meals are provided and prepared fresh onsite by a qualified chef, their furry friends can come along for the stay as the community is pet-friendly and they have access to all onsite amenities and lifestyle activities. Not to mention, the added security of knowing 24/7 onsite care is available to them, if and when they need it, something most traditional retirement villages do not offer. “An amazing example we had recently was when one of our residents was doing their “try before you buy” stay and Brisbane went into lockdown. The feedback from this resident was amazing. Usually, they would have been completely isolated, by themselves at home, but because they were at Seasons, they didn’t have to worry about doing the grocery shopping, having their care needs met by our onsite team, and still felt like they were part of a community. It made them even more certain that this was the place for them,” says Cheryl. Expanding over three stages, Seasons Mango Hill boasts luxury 1-, 2- & 3-bedroom apartments, with extensive onsite amenities from a movie cinema to onsite hair salon and soon, a brand-new pool. Meet Barbara, she is 83 years young and has called Bribie Cove on the Sunshine Coast her home for 18 months. She was born in New Zealand but after calling Australia her home for 30 years, of course we will claim her as our own. Described as a beautiful soul by staff, Barb (as she likes to be called) is a very talented artist. Barb started painting at a very young age and has always received so much joy from putting her brushes to canvas or paper. When her husband passed away many years ago she decided to really turn a casual hobby into a full-time passion. Barb’s talent spans across many mediums, with her favourite style of work being portraits, she enjoys drawing in pastels the most because “it is easy to work with and less messier than paint.” Over the years, Barb has produced a vast variety of content, from animals to landscapes, portraits and flowers to name a few. On asking Barb to select her favourite artworks, she showed no hesitation in telling us that the giraffe, the cat, and her landscapes of the mountains in New Zealand are her prized paintings. Barb says that she enjoys living at Bribie Cove and doesn’t see herself being anywhere else because, “this is my home and everyone here is like family to me.”

“At the Meet Me At The Bay breakfast showcasing local producers”

Dear Pumicestone, I know lockdowns had a big impact on businesses and sole traders across our region. Small business owners, sole traders, the hospitality and tourism industry and not-forprofit groups have told us that support is needed. So the Palaszczuk Government has listened and put together a package of grants, support services, deferrals, refunds and waivers to help our business and sole trader community make it through.

So what does this look like? Supporting jobs is critical, so if your business employs staff, your payroll determines how much you receive.

For small businesses with a payroll of less than $1.3 million, you can get $10,000 total. That’s the $5,000 grant we announced a couple of weeks ago plus an extra $5,000 one-off top-up grant. If you’re a medium business with a payroll between $1.3 million and $10 million, you can receive an extra $10,000 one-off top-up grant, bringing your total grants to $15,000. And if you run a large tourism or hospitality business, with a payroll over $10 million, an extra $25,000 one-off could be coming your way, with your total grants sitting at $30,000. You can apply for this money right now. Applications are

Sole traders without employees won’t miss out either. Eligible sole-trader can apply for the Federal Government COVID-19 Disaster payment available via https://www. servicesaustralia.gov.au/ individuals/services/centrelink/ covid-19- disaster-paymentqueensland And in September the Palaszczuk Government is opening applications for $1,000 one-off grants to sole traders. Register your interest for the State Government Sole Trader grants here: https://qldtreasury. syd1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/ SV_8p6Pl1s2QbI7hUq These COVID-19 grants are on top of existing State Government business grants like the $25 million small business grant program, $460 million for our flagship employment programs, and Big Plans for Small Business package. Small businesses often tell me that the thought of being declared a hotspot and having

to pay for deep cleaning is a big worry. That’s why the Queensland Government has introduced the COVID-19 cleaning rebate, by providing a rebate of up to 80% of professional cleaning expenses if the business is confirmed as a COVID exposure site. For more information on the cleaning rebate head to: https://www.business.qld.gov. au/running-business/covid-19restrictions/cleaning-rebate We need our economy to bounce back better than ever, so I want to see every eligible Pumicestone business or sole trader apply for these grants, and get the money flowing into our area. HOW THE AGE PENSION WORKS

To qualify for the Age Pension in Australia you must have reached Age Pension age (which depends on your date of birth but is currently 66), satisfy Australian residency rules, and pass both an income test and an assets test. Depending on your level of income and the assets you own, you may qualify for either a full or part Age Pension.

ASSETS TEST

To qualify for a full Age Pension as a single person your assets must also be valued below $268,000 if you own your own home, or $482,500 if you don’t own your own home. You can still be eligible for a part Age Pension if your assets are worth less than $585,750 if you own your own home, or $800,250 if you don’t own your own home. For a couple to qualify for the full Age Pension, your combined assets must be below $394,500 if you own your own home, or $616,000 if you don’t own your own home. You can still be eligible for a part Age Pension if your assets are worth less than $880,500 if you own your own home, or $1,095,000 if you don’t own your own home.

INCOME TEST

To qualify for a full Age Pension as a single person your income must be below $178 per fortnight (approximately $4,628 per year), but you can still be eligible for a

part Age Pension if you earn less than $2,083.40 per fortnight (approximately $54,168 per year). For a couple, to qualify for the full Age Pension yourcombined income must be below $316 per fortnight (approximately $8,216 per year), but you can still be eligible for a part Age Pension if you earn less than $3,188.40 per fortnight (approximately $82,898 per year). It’s important to note that you can earn up to $300 per person per fortnight from working and this amount is not included in the Age Pension income test. This is known as the work bonus.

CAN YOU ALSO GET RENT ASSISTANCE?

If you’re receiving the Age Pension, you may be entitled for rent assistance (including any fees you may be paying a retirement village, provided that the Australian government isn’t already paying a subsidy to the facility where you live). To receive assistance, you must be paying a minimum amount of rent. These rates are adjusted in March and September each year based on movements in the CPI. Current rates for Age Pensioners without any dependent children are outlined in the table below. If you pay more than these amounts, you’re entitled to 75 cents of rent assistance for every dollar you pay over the threshold, up to the maximum amount. For more information, jump onto this

The practice had been on the market for some time and if not sold was going to be closed, so Dr Raj purchased the practice as to avoid that happening. Dr Raj has seen many changes over his 20 years in general practice on the Island. He started with 1 full time GP to now having four permanent doctors. He values the community as an intricate part of this practice being a success and believes that the commitment of his staff both past and present has helped build the practice

to what it is today. Dr Raj and his staff will continue to provide excellent health care to existing clientele as well as the wider community. The staff at Bellara Family Medical Practice feel extremely privileged to work in a smaller practice enabling them to continue to give their patients the quality health care they provide and continue to work hard at maintaining the unique spirit of this practice. We would like to extend our congratulations and offer a heartfelt thank you, to an amazing doctor who has supported our community for the past 20 years. Update GOVN GRANTS (1) There are new grants recently made available providing support for small businesses. Check to see if you are eligible. The main grant that would be the most applicable is the Business Support Grant providing a $10,000 grant covering a 7 day period when your business had to shut down for at least 1 day this year for Covid. If you had employees and none of them were related to the trading entity, you have passed the first qualification. The business must choose one of the 7 periods so far this year that we have been locked down. The most recent is 31 July – 8 August 2021. Then you need to make a note of your turnover for the last 3 years together with wages paid. You must be able to confirm that the business traded for the last 3 financial years. Find the relating turnover for the same period during the 2019 financial year. If your current 7 day choice is down by 30% or more you would be eligible. Complete the 2021 COVID-19Business support Grant. There is an Independent Financial Confirmation required to be completed by your accountant supporting your claim.

GOVN GRANTS (2)

The other grant that may be of assistance is the $1000 one off grant for non-employing sole traders across Queensland. You must also be able to demonstrate a 30% decline in turnover over a 7 day period against 2019 when you had to close at least 1 day during the lockdown period. Should you require any assistance in completing the grants or any other query, please contact the office. TALKING Business By: Michelle Hanton OAM

I

n business, you must have a consistent approach to everything. By your approach to everything, I mean just that: Everything you do and say. Every decision you make. Everything you think.

Living in the current environment, albeit in a beautiful part of the world, where lockdowns and the unknown lurk around each corner; now more than ever we need a smarketing mindset.

SO WHAT’S SMARKETING? Smarketing encompasses strategy, sales and marketing rolled into a system that becomes a part of how you work, and everything that you do. It’s learning how to refocus your business mindset for results.

It is not the sort of strategy you write down for your boss or your bank manager. It is what you practice until it becomes second nature. And before you think, ‘this Dragon Sisters lot sound like a brain-washing cult,’ one of the key things in developing a Smarketing mindset, is honing your own, unique voice, to cut through the white noise of sameness. Smarketing is, put simply, a mindset you develop to constantly and consistently create and maximise opportunities. In other words, you are alert. Alert to opportunity; anticipate and spot trends. You are also alert to where risks may lie and are strategic about the risks you choose to take. The good news is that this is something that anyone can learn. When you master the mindset you become one of those sorts who rarely miss an opportunity and, importantly, know how to create opportunity. It’s your personal formula of communication and promotion. It personalises your sales, your marketing, your business. It

HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY sets you, and your business, apart from the rest. So often I hear “But I’m advertising already. What more can I do to gain business?” My answer is always, “You can do a lot! And it need cost you no more, or even less, than what you’re doing now. In fact, if you have a tiny budget, you can still do a lot.” Because all that is missing is one key element to your sales and marketing equation … Smarketing…. the secret ingredient! When you’re a Smarketer you have your own unique voice. You are able to consistently use every opportunity that presents itself to create awareness of your business. If you don’t, you’ll find that the results you get are inconsistent and your performance averages out at, well – average. Consistency is key. Whether you’re enjoying good times or experiencing a famine, you need to consistently be out there. Once you lose momentum it is extremely hard to pick it up.

A Smarketing Mindset sets you up for success. No matter what stage your business it at and even if you’re on a roll, it’s vital to be smarketing. Always. Often people think that it’s enough to be busy marketing, even if the results are pretty much hit-and-miss. At least they are maintaining awareness of their brand or service and isn’t that what marketing is all about? The short answer is no! It’s much more complex; you need to be able to test and measure results. There must be a strategy behind everything you are doing, especially when you are spending money or investing time into the activity.

TEST & MEASURE

Testing and measuring take several forms. There is the solid data that you can study based on backend platforms, cut out coupons, scanning in/entering codes and affiliate results but then there is the more abstract. I’m talking about touchpoints. What is a touchpoint? It’s a point of contact between you and a potential customer.

TOUCHPOINTS When it comes to how you count touchpoints there are a host of different opinions on this. However, I believe, if you are being serious about measuring you need to count every single touch point. In my business it takes around 20 touchpoints to make a conversion to engage my services. I count from the first time I meet a potential client to the time they hand over their dollars. This includes any visits to my blog, engagement on social media channels, phone calls, emails either personal or via my mailing list, 1:1 chat, connecting at a networking function or business group we both belong to or seeing them out at a social gathering. How many times have you seen an advertisement, called up about it, and then not been followed up? Worse yet, someone takes the time to come out, measure up and provide a quote and then does not get in touch again to ask for the sale.

Now you might be thinking, “Oh, I don’t want to look pushy.” Flip this on its head and think about it like this…when you follow up you are closing the sale. Either you get a yes or a no. You have an answer and have closed. This is Smarketing! Even if the answer is no, keep in touch. Circumstances change. You’ve already made a connection so keep it up by having a strategy in place for staying front of mind.

MAINTAINING A CONNECTION

Being a smarketer means understanding the value of maintaining connections. The amount of effort to gain one client or get to the point where you followed up for the close and the answer was thanks but no thanks, is never wasted if you are using a smarketing mindset. Want to learn more about smarketing? I’m running a FREE online workshop next month. Interested? Get in touch michelle@dragonsisters. com.au or 0418 898082 and I’ll pop you on the list to receive details.

FOOD, WINE AND ISLAND TIMES

I

n last month’s article, we covered the success of The Calabria Family Wines release of their world-beating ‘Iconic Grand Reserve Barossa Valley Shiraz’ which is in limited production and sells for $175 a bottle but this success doesn’t reveal the hardships and difficult times of the past that could have so easily seen the end of this family business. The Calabria story began over 75 years ago, with the arrival in Sydney on ‘The Regina D’Italia’ on 15th September 1927 with Domenico Calabria emigrating from Calabria in Southern Italy and moving out to Griffith, NSW in the Riverina to be followed two years later by his son Francesco, then the Calabria’s had to save enough money to bring Francesco’s wife Elisabetta to join him which she did in 1934. In 1945 ‘Calabria Wines and Sons’ was officially launched making wines for local family and friends which were sold in barrels. Later Francesco’s youngest son Bill Calabria AM, summed this up “The idea of making home-made wine was simply to survive, it was a means of income for my parents, something that my family and I are eternally grateful for” this determination for survival would later return in the 1980s when Bill and wife Lena along with children Frank and Michael started washing bottles for other wine companies to make enough money to keep their winery afloat during the downturn of the Australian wine industry. Though it was an unglamorous tack, it kept the business afloat and set them up for future success during the export boom of the 1990s. By 1959 The Calabria’s were crushing over eighty tonnes of fruit and sons, Bill and Tony were involved with the production from a very early age but it wasn’t until 1970 that they released their first bottled wine under the Calabria label and a modest cellar door was opened four years later. By 2006 the annual crush continued to grow, exceeded 8,000 tonnes and this year 20,000 tonnes. Using the Westend name for their value for money wines and Three Bridges for their premium wines Bill and Lena Calabria were known for their approach to all aspects of their business and the pursuit of quality was the driver of their success and now awards at local and international wine shows let their wines do the talking. In early 2014 the business reverted to their family namecalling the business Calabria Family Wines to distinguish themselves from the large corporate wine companies and to reflect three generations and over seven decades that have worked so hard to make the company the success it is today. All four of Bill and Lena’s children, Frank, Michael, Andrew, and Elizabeth are involved with the business alongside the winemaking team of Emma Norbiato, Tony Steffainia, Jeremy Nascimben, Rusell Cody, and Mel McWilliam as well as Bill who continues a very hand’s on involvement in the winery. For Bill, there have been tough times in life as well as successes that have helped shape him as a person and businessman. In 2013 he was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (an AM) for his significant services to the wine industry. In 2015 at the New South Wales Wine awards Bill received the Graham Gregory Award for outstanding contribution to the N.S.W. wine industry. Among their many ranges is the Calabria Three Bridges Label which consists of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and the flagship Durif which is consistently outstanding year after year. They also create Italian varieties under The Calabria Private Bin, varieties include Nero d’Avola, and Montepulciano. Their Calabria Richland Range covers the most popular varieties and offers outstanding value for money. Looking to broaden their horizons further in 2010 the Calabria family purchased the original Hahn vineyard in

The family now owns three Barossa vineyards and a tasting room. In 2020 they acquired the Deakin Estate label which includes the La La Land and the Azahara wine brands and recently bought the Riverina arm of the historic McWilliam’s Wines, which included the Hanwood vineyard, winery and cellar door, so this is a company moving with purpose. In addition to the familiar Australian labels, Calabria is also extending their international

portfolio offers with selected family partners, to include, Canti Prosecco from Italy which is one of Italy’s largest-selling Prosecco’s, Italian table wines from Librandi, Dow’s Port from Portugal, and now a real coup with the famous and prestigious Champagne House of Deutz coming on board, so despite all the doom and gloom around with problems with China and Covid, here is a family company looking forward to an exciting future. I had the pleasure of selling Calabria Family Wines for around ten years and they were very well received in Perth, I believe the Richland Sauvignon Blanc to be one of the best value Australian wines on the marketplace. Each Saturday during the summer we would drive up to The Mundaring Weir Hotel east of Perth where they had weekly shows and would carry out wine tastings,

we always had the opportunity to stay afterwards and watch the show which had some of Australia’s top talent but were usually too tired as we were on our feet for around four hours talking to hundreds of people but it was always a pleasure to look around and see our wines on almost every table in the theatre. Dan Murphy’s sell the Richland Pinot Noir and the Shiraz, also The Three Bridges Durif which is excellent, the new Calabria release ‘Belena’ plus you will also find McWilliam’s Hanwood tawny, a real show stopper also the McWilliams Hanwood table wine range is available almost everywhere and is always outstanding value.

DISCOVER 8 FOODS THAT MAKE YOU HAPPY! Being in a bad mood, but you don’t know why? You might be missing antioxidants that stimulate your serotonin! Simply eat these foods regularly and see how bad mood and mood swing disappear!

COCONUT Coconuts do contain medium-chain triglycerides, which are special fats that promote better moods and general brain-health. To only get the health benefits and not the bad parts of coconut (fat and sugar), stick with unsweetened coconut shavings.

AVOCADO Avocados are high in monounsaturated fat and potassium, both of which help lower blood pressure and helps keep receptors in the brain sensitive to mood-boosting serotonin. Half an avocado a day is enough already!

SPINACH Spinach is stocked with folic acid, a B vitamin that has been found to boost your mood. It’s also an antioxidant that works to

protect your brain cells from free radicals, which can lead to low energy and mood swings.

GREEN TEA

Green tea is full of theanine, an antioxidant which acts as a calming agent. So sip a cup or two whenever you feel down!

BERRIES

Blueberries, strawberries and raspberries all contain the antioxidant anthocyanin, which help reduce stress and depression and fight oxidative stress.

PINEAPPLE

Pineapple is full of tryptophan, which works great against depression. Since our body does not produce tryptophan on its own, it must get it from food sources, like pineapple or tofu.

ORANGES

Oranges contain inositol, which regulates serotonin and insulin in the body for fewer blood sugar imbalances and fewer mood swings.

ALMONDS

Almonds are known to contain serotonins, Vitamin E, vitamin B2 also known as Riboflavin and antioxidants that improve the immune system. They also cut down the harmful effects of stress. The next time you’re feeling down, help yourself to some crunchy nuts.

ow sad that for the second year running, thanks to our present pandemic, our beloved Ekka has had to be cancelled. I was talking to my daughter about our memories of the Brisbane Show and we shared many a family tale. The first show I attended was memorable in that not only did I have an ice cream with a strawberry but I also got to sample that strange comestible known as The Chiko Roll, deep-fried and rolled in salt. It must have been healthy as I seemed to detect cabbage within. I found these mystery bags quite delicious and could not understand my husband's reluctance to share my enthusiasm. A few years later, when we had two small children, Simon, three years and six months and Tamara, a year older, we decided that they were old enough to be given a taste of the big show. We combined this visit with a trip to see Don's mother who lived at Windsor and whose home was within walking distance of the show. It was decided that the children would get tired if we tried to do too much so the baby animals and then the larger animals were all that we felt we should attempt, perhaps with an ice cream to give the children an extra energy boost. All appeared to be going well, small animals were patted and stroked, but when we came to the pigs, cows and sheep we detected a certain lack of enthusiasm in Simon. My husband, hoping to jolly his son along, asked him, “Well Simon, are you going to be a farmer when you grow up?” Back came the answer, a very firm, “No!” At an early age, he slammed the door shut on an Agricultural Career. When we asked him why he was so definite in his rejection of this traditional Aussie occupation, his answer was succinct for one so young. “Too much poo and piss!” He always did have

34 www.thebribieislander.com.au

an appreciation of alliteration. Due to her advanced age, Tamara was to be allowed one ride in side-show alley, Simon was already too traumatised by the livestock to object. Now I am not brave on whirligigs and such, but my daughter did persuade me to accompany her on a “baby” Ferris wheel, saying that she would hold my hand so I would be safe, much to the amusement of onlookers. When the children were a little older we decided that they should be exposed to all of the show, including Sideshow Alley. It was at the same show we bought both of our children their choice of dress-up costumes, a cowgirl outfit for Tamara and a Spider-man outfit for Simon. That same year, they also ventured into the shed where Show-bags were distributed and having collected the number they were allowed, four or five I think, it was time to return to Windsor and Nan's place. Here, photographs were taken of the children in their costumes. I mention this because my son had the photographs enlarged as posters which were put up on the walls of the house in Melbourne which he bought and brought up his own family. My grandchildren would gaze at these small children on the posters and wonder if that Spider-man and Cowgirl really were their father and Aunty Tamara.

could find. I am glad I was not there to watch. I think their interests were strictly Sideshow Alley based, the Best Sponge Cake etc. being given a big miss. It was Tamara though, that had the most unforgettable Show. When she was fifteen and her boyfriend, now her husband, was approaching twenty, she was taken to the Ekka by him and together they had the most marvellous day. Ice-cream, rides, looking at exhibits, yes, even the sponge cakes, watching the fireworks and for a Grand Finale, before going home, Bill decided to win Tamara a memento of the day. He approached the rifle range, paid his money, picked up his rifle and “Bull's Eye!” He won a very large Green Frog. He had another go. This time winning a large Red Devil. One last shot and a Big Blue Teddy Bear was his, or rather Tamara's. He gallantly donated his trophies to his girlfriend. As they travelled home on the train other passengers made complimentary comments, which gratified both Bill and Tamara. She kept these soft toys for years and I have a photo of her and Bill's first child, surrounded by a whole army of protective stuffed animals including the Blue Bear, the Red Devil and biggest of all, the Green Frog.

On another family occasion at the Show, Tamara was whisked away by her second cousin, Doneene, and had her ears pierced much to Tamara's joy and her father's displeasure. Nothing to the displeasure Don demonstrated when Simon had his ear pierced at the age of nineteen until I laughed at him and told him to get real! Later, of course, both children wanted to go to the Show with their own friends. Simon went with his best mate David and, from what I gathered later, had a marvellous time going on all the scariest rides they

H oroscope With schools preparing to reopen, as students of life, we must all be willing to learn this month. And, with the planet of communication, Mercury, turning retrograde at the end of September, a reluctant reinvestigation of recent decisions may be necessary. But the move of Mars into Libra, and the Sun/ Neptune opposition, enable a better understanding of people’s motives. Meanwhile the Equinox promises that a willingness to ask difficult questions will help us secure the future our hard work and resilience deserves.

Why would anyone ask a question they can’t hope to answer? Why try to comprehend something that makes no sense? Because we can never be sure what constitutes a futile pursuit. The only way to discover whether a search for knowledge is worthwhile is to try. And there’s a lot to be gained from travelling through tricky territories… the most exciting discoveries are rarely made when we’re pursuing obvious objectives. As long as you don’t reach too far, there’s a lot to be gained by stretching yourself this month. Discover the inner you… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

September brings a Full Moon in your sign, and the Equinox. These intense cosmic occurrences carry a simple and clear message: your life is being blessed in a pragmatic and powerful way. Will this make it easier for you to resolve the ongoing problems in your life? Of course! Just when you’re reaching the end of your tether, and are filled with uncertainty about how to move ahead, the cosmos provides you with a celestial helping hand. There are reasons to be optimistic. And this month brings you tangible proof of that. There’s more… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

Before you concern yourself with what you can (and can’t) do in September, be aware of one potential oversight that could overshadow everything else. Be careful about your reluctance to rock a boat, ask a question, or broach a particular subject… either because it makes you feel uncomfortable, or because you’re worried that you might draw someone’s attention to a factor they’re trying to avoid dealing with. This month, rather than keeping a low profile, it’s time to be bold and brave. If you request what you need, you might just get it.Our gift to you… completely free audio and video forecasts. VIRGO (Aug 24 - Sept 23)

Since you start September with dynamic Mars still in your sign, you’re being blessed with energy and motivation. And, as we move towards the Equinox, the cosmos presents you with many different moments to seize. If you succumb to stress, you’ll be allowing yourself to be ‘overdriven’. There’s no need to take anything too seriously; you’ve got all the tools necessary to help you get what you need. Everything else relies on your attitude and your perspective. If you keep these in balance, you can move mountains this month. Don’t miss out… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

They tell us that ‘no news is good news’. But they also say that ‘what the eye doesn’t see, the heart doesn’t grieve over’ and that ‘knowledge is power’. If you ask me whoever ‘they’ are, they say far too much! Your priority, in September, is to decide whether you believe something because you know it’s true, or because ‘they’ say it. Why should you bother with what anyone thinks? And why would you want to remain ignorant of a fact? The Equinox boosts your self-confidence. If you trust your instincts, you’ll have a great month. An amazing service… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

One of my favourite disco tunes is by Chic. ‘Good times. These are the good times. Leave your cares behind. These are the good times’. It might not have the most complex lyrics, but it’s a classic feelgood song. So… do you have good times to look forward to this month? Although you might be able to think of many different reasons to worry, there’s something in your world that’s worth celebrating. Your ruler’s move into a new celestial home brings the energy to focus on what makes you happy. Good times really do await. Especially for you… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

If only it was easy to communicate. The trouble is that there’s no guarantee people hear what we’re trying to tell them. And we don’t always understand what they’re telling us. Aargh! We’re so caught up in our beliefs that we twist messages to fit our expectations. Or, we’re so emotionally involved that we don’t think about the consequences of our words. And, as soon as we stop being conscious of how we’re communicating, problems arise. As long as you’re careful, areas of misunderstanding can be sorted out in September. Ready now... completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

The unknown’s unsettling. When we’re certain about something, we feel a sense of comfort; when we’re uncertain, we feel anxious. And wherever there’s doubt, there’s room for your vivid imagination to make assumptions that cause concern. That’s why your September outlook’s so positive. It brings clarity where there’s been bewilderment, and a reassuring end to a saga. If only you’d known then what you know now… how different things would be. Yet what you discover this month will make past challenges seem worthwhile. Oscar’s gift… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

Should you try to be more organised, focused and pragmatic in September? Quite possibly! But not too much. Although people who prioritise their achievements end up with a lot to write home about, they risk having nowhere to address their letters! The folk ‘back home’ can’t relate to them any more. By reorganising your agenda and re-evaluating your needs, there’s no doubt you can make a lot happen this Equinox month. That’s definitely a good thing. But it would be a mistake to make it the only thing that motivates you. Unmissable gift… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

Why not begin September by consciously opening your heart and mind to the prospect of a triumph? You might think that you’re already open to such a possibility… and that success can knock on your door at any time and be warmly welcomed into your world. But does that allow for the fact that it sometimes travels in disguise? Just like butterflies bear no resemblance to caterpillars, potential isn’t always easy to identify; it can be hard to spot. Yet this month, if you look out for it, you’ll find that there’s lots of it flying about.Right here, right now… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

Some questions can never be adequately answered. You’re dealing with a situation that seems to make less sense the more you think about it. There’s an enigmatic element to the issue… which is irritating; when you can’t quite grasp the nature of the question, it’s hard to know how to tackle it. Should you stand back and contemplate it? Or dive into the mystery? In September, if you care a little less about the consequences of your actions, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the progress you make and the answers you find. A brilliant offer… completely free audio and video forecasts. Go to ozfree.cainer.com

With Venus, the planet of love, moving into your sign this month, you can expect to radiate like a glowing fire on a cold evening, and shine as brightly as a lighthouse beam across a dark ocean. People will be drawn towards you. Your generosity and warmth will bring a smile to anyone you focus on. If you’re as positive as you can be, more positivity will flow towards you. ith our September sky, we can finally say goodbye, officially to winter. The Spring Equinox, which marks the astronomical change in seasons, will occur this month, September 22nd. This is the time when there is equal day and night. Most people mark the change in seasons as September 1st, in any case, things are getting warmer and exploring the sky becomes far more comfortable. Our sky, this month is again dominated by the beautiful gas giant planets of Jupiter and Saturn, with Venus as the evening star, just after sunset. Jupiter is still the brightest object of the night sky. I hope as many readers as possible take the opportunity to view these beautiful objects. Both Jupiter and Saturn are at their closest point to earth at the

Nebula In the Larg e Megella Thank yo nic Cloud u Katheri . ne Miller

Seeing these planets for the best part of 40 years of my life, I have been amazed at the quality of images being produced by amateur backyard astronomers and observatories. I recently saw an image of Jupiter that clearly showed the surface detail of Ganymede, Jupiter’s largest moon. A world 5200 km in diameter, but 600 million kilometers away. Years ago, this would have only been possible to observe by large professional observatories, but advances in technology, have made it possible for images of this quality to be captured by very skilled amateur astronomers from their own backyard. Our image of Saturn, taken by astrophotographer, Dylan O'Donnell of Byron Bay Observatory, (a private backyard observatory), is absolutely breathtaking and demonstrates the skill needed for planetary photography, and what can be achieved in one’s own backyard. Even with very basic photographic equipment, and without access to a telescope, lots of fun and incredible images can be achieved. Like this striking image sent to me by John Gardner, demonstrating the rotation of the night sky around the

South Celestial Pole. The time exposure also captured the Aurora Australis or southern lights, as well as the International Space Station crossing the sky if you look closely. Photographic or science projects or like this, are great for children to learn about the night sky. Plotting Jupiter's moons each night as they circle the planet, builds observational and reporting skills. This month rising in the east are the water constellations of Pisces and Cetus. Interestingly, the constellation of Cetus, (or The Whale), contains the skies most well-known variable star, Mira. A star that varies from being one of the brightest in the sky to being invisible to all but a large telescope, over a period of 330 days. At the moment it's just visible to the naked eye. I do recall plotting part of its cycle for a year 9 science project many moons ago. To find this interesting star, a phone app. like Stellarium or a star atlas is needed, but it is a worthwhile exercise. Next month one of the skies most spectacular and well-known galaxies, Andromeda, becomes visible for us on Bribie. Stay tuned and stay safe beautiful Bribie. Buff-Banded Rail GALLIRALLUS PHILIPPENSIS

BY: Marj Webber uff-banded Rails belong to the waterbird family and are common wetland dwellers on Bribie Island, often seen singularly or in pairs at Bibimulya wetlands, along the pathways at Kakadu and near water holes along Hornsby Rd. They are medium-sized, colourful rails 28-32 cm in length and weighing 150210 g. Backs are streaky grey while underparts have black and white stripes with a splash of orange across the breast, cheeks and at the back of their necks. Eyes and bill are red while legs and bills are short. Although they are competent fliers they prefer to walk or run rather than fly. They walk slowly with tail upright and flicking up and down. If disturbed,

they will quickly rush to hide in thick undergrowth. Usually shy and secretive they can become quite tame if exposed often to human contact Habitats are mainly near water in areas such as swamps, lake and river edges, tidal mudflats and man-made structures such as sewage plants, canals and dams. They sometimes wander onto lawns and gardens for short periods of time. Buff-banded rails are widely dispersed in Australia particularly in coastal areas. They are also found in Southeast Asia, New Zealand and PNG. Usually, they are sedentary but if the water dries up and food becomes scarce, they will move to other areas. Feeding times are usually early morning and late afternoon but I have seen them foraging for food at

other times. Buff-banded Rails are omnivorous scavengers and eat a wide variety of foods such as insects, small animals, reptiles, berries, seeds and carrion. If the opportunity arises, they will eat the eggs and small chicks from the nests of other ground-nesting birds. Farmers and gardeners are usually happy to have them around as they help control garden pests.

black and fluffy and leave the nests soon after they are hatched. Parent birds are protective of their young and make loud hissing sounds if their chicks are threatened. Youngsters mostly feed themselves and usually remain with their parents for some time before breaking away. Rails make very little sound whilst breeding. Sometimes two broods are hatched in one season.

Breeding takes place normally between August and December. Nests are cup-shaped and made from grass or leaves on the ground in thick undergrowth usually near water and may be hidden by rocks, logs or grass tufts. 3-4 creamy eggs with darker splotches are laid and incubated by both parents for 18-19 days. Rails talk to their chicks in low grunting sounds. Young chicks are

Buff-banded Rails are also known as Banded Landrails. They are not as timid as other rails and are more likely to be observed. The main threats to Rails and other ground-feeding birds are introduced predators and insects and vegetation that has been sprayed with pesticides. Even so, the species appears to be safe at present and rated as secure in all states.

The Road Kills Go On and On :

PART 1:

THE HIDDEN COST THIS IS A SCENE WE SEE ALL TOO OFTEN ON THE ROADS IN THE BRIBIE ISLAND SUBURBS.

MBRC has spent over $300,000 on the work on First Avenue. They’ve put in road markings, motion activated signs and rope bridges with fencing along the road for a short distance. It’s a lot of money spent for very good reasons. The MBRC experts are confident it will have a positive effect. Maybe a step in the right direction. Time will tell. It’s also very expensive for people to coexist with animals who find their way out of the National Park and onto the roads where a collision causes all sorts of carnage and cost. But if you live on this beautiful island, that is part of the cost of living here. For humans and

animals there is a cost How much it costs depends on whether you’re the animal or the human. The animals don’t fare well when they collide with a vehicle. Their cost is mostly lifetime injuries or death. The locals see the dead and injured kangaroos, wallabies, birds, lizards, snakes, possums, turtles and echidnas all too frequently. There are many other hidden costs that are borne by the community. Top of the list would have to be the sudden trauma of colliding with and killing a macropod. Maybe with the kids or grandkids on board. It’s guaranteed to dampen your spirits. There are other costs too. Part of Policing on the Island is to attend accidents that involve kangaroo and wallaby road kills. They turn up, put on their gloves to check if there is a Joey casualty and then they arrange for the body to be disposed of or fling it into the bush themselves. They find that part of their role to be unpleasant.

By Dr Ken Salisbury

Sometimes they have to shoot the animal to put it out of its suffering. It’s an essential service, but probably not one the Officers signed on to. It’s easy to see that while the Police are attending a Kangaroo and vehicle accident, they aren’t doing other Policing. They are at least delayed in getting to other jobs. That’s a cost. They also collect data that is used by the driver to make an insurance claim. Most people have an excess of around $600. If there are only 150 claims a year, which is around one third how many road deaths there are, then the locals are paying out over ninety thousand dollars a year in excess alone. A local Panel Beater advised the car repair quotes for kangaroo accidents were between four and five thousand dollars, sometimes more. They advised they quoted “all the time”. The direct cost to the Insurers is high. Even if there are only 3 claims a week, that’s over $750,000 dollars a year, every year and on the rise.

Because the insurers outsource the risk and cost recovery, the premium hike for the 4507 postcode will be the ongoing cost; an ongoing and rising cost to the residents. That’s ridiculous when the accidents can be reduced dramatically if someone took responsibility for managing the fauna on the Island. Despite their concern and the overwhelming pressure of road death frequencies, MBRC projects move forward slowly and the cost to the Community continues to mount up. Delays cost us more and more. The past and present planning and approval processes have allowed roads and increased human population and ongoing development without requiring the cost of Flora and Fauna management to be borne in the plan itself. Outsourcing costs to the Community seems to be a good way of hiding true costs.

That needs to change. Issue 147 Aug 27, 2021

EPISODE 4 - A By: Al Finegan

I

n July 1790, convict Mary Ann Wade, not yet thirteen years old, had been working till she dropped, seven days a week since her arrival six weeks previously, tending to the sick and dying in the crude hospital in the burgeoning colony of Sydney. She had no idea what her future would be, or where she would be sent. Then finally, towards the end of the month, she was told that she was one of the women to be sent to Norfolk Island. Governor Phillip had demanded one ship of the Second Fleet be contracted to transport the women and their children to the Island. Surprise was made available, and Justina, the store ship, would accompany her with much needed supplies. Just as Sydney had been, Norfolk Island was in the grip of starvation. On 31st July 1790 Mary Wade boarded the Surprise and sailed out of Sydney Harbour along with 149 women with their children, the great majority of them still unspoken for and many pregnant.

BIG FAMILY

After the First Fleet had arrived at Port Jackson in January 1788, Phillip ordered Lieutenant Philip Gidley King to lead a party of 15 convicts and seven free men to take control of Norfolk Island and prepare it for its commercial development. They arrived on 6th March 1788. During the first year of the settlement, more convicts and soldiers were sent to the island from NSW including the first female convicts. Immediately on their arrival Commandant Gidley King had first choice of the women and selected Ann Inett to be his housekeeper. Ann, who later ran a successful business was described as an attractive woman, small framed, dark haired, industrious, and with a neat and clean appearance. On 8th January 1789, she delivered the first child to be born on the island who was named Norfolk King. A year later Ann had a second child. Several years later, Gidley King arranged for his sons to be sent to England to be educated, and both went on to become distinguished Royal Navy officers.

The Bribie Islander

The birth of the settlement on Norfolk Island was not a happy one. The Island suffered from the lack of any suitable cove for ships to anchor and discharge their cargoes. It was surrounded by a coral reef, and out from the reef, it was a sheer drop to the deep ocean floor making it impossible for ships to anchor safely. Over the years, this led to many disasters causing loss of life and stores. The previous March, HMS Sirius had been wrecked on a reef losing all its stores and stranding its entire crew on the Island, leaving the colony desperately short of food, further exacerbated by the doubling of the population.

she observed the boat that had just landed her, while returning with the next group, capsize in the heavy surf. She watched on helplessly as seven of her friends struggled in the waves, then drowned, while the boat was smashed to pieces.

The Surprise death rate during the Second Fleet voyage was high, and the general conditions aboard were so bad the vessel became known as one of the “Hell Ships” of the Second Fleet. The weeklong trip across to Norfolk Island was not pleasant, yet Mary made the trip without complaint. It was Mary's introduction to Norfolk Island that was to be her most frightening experience when

Mary continued working six days a week during all daylight hours for her soldier for the next year as the colony struggled to feed itself. At one stage a plague of caterpillars invaded the gardens of the island and for about a month, she spent every daylight hour plucking them off her plants and stomping on them.

No special provisions had been made to house female convicts. They were all immediately assigned to non-convict men, ostensibly as house servants, but in reality, as mistresses. Gardens for the growing of vegetables had been established to help the serious food position that had developed. Mary, assigned to a soldier as a house servant was soon hard at work in his garden.

A year later, two men arrived on Norfolk who were to have a

REGULAR FEATURES profound effect on the rest of Mary’s life. They were Jonathan Brooker and Teague Harrigan. Both had been sentenced to seven years. Harrigan came originally from Cork, Ireland and arrived on 4th September 1791 and Brooker, originally from Kent, England a few weeks later. Unfortunately, all records of events for the next four years were lost in a fire. The best that can be ascertained is that Mary developed a relationship with both these men and gave birth to two children, Sarah, in 1793 and William in 1795. Given the extreme hardships in survival on Norfolk Island at that time, it was likely Mary kept both men at her beck and call to provide her with a roof over her head and food for her, and subsequently, her children. Her true strength of character would have emerged and been developed during her time on Norfolk. Mary had seen the power that women could exercise over men on her voyage to Australia, and the shortage of women on Norfolk allowed her to use her youth and beauty for survival. Given the lifelong doubt over the fatherhood of her two children, and Mary’s reluctance to ever name the father, it is almost certain she was maintaining an intimate relationship with both men. Many years later when asked, Jonathan simply said that he was either the father or stepfather of all of Mary's children. The death certificate of the first child, Sarah Wade does name Jonathan as her father. By 1800, Mary and both her men were back in Sydney. Mary had spent her entire teenage years on the island, using her considerable guile and strength of character to survive. The contrast of her relationships with her two men was apparent. The wild Irishman Harrigan appealed to her, and she clearly loved this man. On the other hand, Brooker was a steady reliable man, and a professional carpenter by trade. On arrival in Sydney, Mary decided to live with Harrigan. At the same time, Jonathan Brooker is recorded as working for Doctor Balmain at Parramatta. Mary and Teague did it tough for the next four years, living in a

tent next to the Tank Stream with her two children. In 1803 Mary gave birth to another child as the baptismal record at St. Phillips, Sydney shows. Edward Harrigan, son of Teague Harrigan and Mary Wade, was born 1803 and baptised 1804. The life in a tent with three young children was not what Teague saw as his future. In 1806 he left on a whaling expedition. By 1817 he was living in Port Dalrymple, Tasmania. In 1825, he was granted land near the Tamar River in Launceston. He never returned to the mainland, and Mary never heard from him again. Mary, the great survivor, realised she was on her own and survival was now problematic for her and her three children. She tracked down Jonathon Brooker and they agreed to a long-term relationship. They applied successfully for a land grant and built a home near the Hawkesbury River.

The Hawkesbury had fertile flats but was prone to big floods. In mid-year 1809, the river had risen to 48 feet, and eight lives were lost. While the flood waters raged, Mary went into labour. Jonathon managed to take her across the river to the Windsor hospital where John was born on 24th June 1809. The early Hawkesbury settlers met considerable difficulties before mastering their property. Preparing their land for planting with primitive tools was exhausting. Mary, almost always pregnant, worked constantly with Jonathon in a heartbreaking endeavour. Just as they were making headway, another flood

would arrive, destroying their crops while they struggled to rescue any stock they had managed to accumulate. They decided they had to move. Jonathon was given his Certificate of Freedom in February 1811 and given a grant of 60 acres by Governor Macquarie. Mary received her Certificate of Freedom on the 1st September 1812. In 1816 they settled on the property at Airds in Campbelltown with their ever-increasing family. Mary decided to formalise her relationship with Jonathon, and they married on 10th February 1817 at St Lukes, Liverpool. Jonathon worked tirelessly, and with Mary at his side they built a new home on their land. Jonathon used his carpentry skills to develop a profitable business making furniture. By 1823 things were looking good for the Brooker family, until a raging bushfire swept it all away. It destroyed their home and Jonathan's livelihood as a cabinetmaker. His shed and

all his tools were destroyed. The family became destitute and pleaded to Governor Thomas Brisbane, for aid. Governor Brisbane was a good man and granted them 62 acres in Illawarra. Once again Mary and Jonathan worked tirelessly, recovering to run another successful business. It was here that Mary raised her family which eventually numbered 21 children. Jonathan passed away on 14th March 1833. He was buried in the graveyard of St. Peter's Church, Campbelltown. Mary continued to live on the Illawarra for a further quarter of a century, surrounded by her rapidly enlarging family.

This formidable woman, Mary Ann Brooker, nee Wade, died on 17th December 1859 at the age of 82. Her funeral service was the very first to be held in St Paul's Church of England, Fairy Meadow. Her son, Edward Harrigan, donated the land on which the church was built and guaranteed the debt incurred in its construction. Parish records show that the first funeral service held in St. Paul's was his mother, Mary Ann Brooker. Over 300 direct descendants of Mary attended her funeral. One after the other, her children and grandchildren spoke in tears of their wonderful loving and caring mother. They all said that they always felt loved, and somehow, she always provided their needs of life. The Illawarra Mercury, in an obituary, saluted her as the founding mother of the largest family in Australia. Mary lived through difficult times, but such was her character, she survived the shock of a death sentence, separation from her family at the age of eleven, transportation across the seas for life, enduring the work of the horrors at the Sydney Hospital, a baby on Norfolk Island before she was sixteen, life in a tent back in Sydney, major floods on the Hawkesbury, and pioneering hardships at Airds until finally coming to rest on the Illawarra. I think we Australians can be proud of her. In 1984 a Mary Wade Muster was held at Campbelltown. From Emerald and Toowoomba in Queensland, to Melbourne and Ballarat in Victoria, from Moruya and Kangaloon, Dubbo and Lismore. Indeed, they came from everywhere! Over four hundred descendants of Mary Wade arrived to celebrate their incredible Founding Mother. Together they estimated that there were over ten thousand descendent spread all over Australia. Even one of our Prime Ministers, Kevin Rudd, is a descendant. By 2010 it was estimated that as many as 100,000 Australians could trace their ancestry back to a genuinely great pioneer, Mary Ann Wade. She truly set the benchmark for courage, resilience, tenacity, and drive to survive and succeed, despite whatever life threw at her. Issue 147 Aug 27, 2021

CHEMIST NO DOCTOR!

History of Bribie Pharmacy

By Barry Clark Bribie Island Historical Society

F

or the first 40 years of development on Bribie, there was no Doctor or Chemist. The first to open a Chemist shop on the island was John Rowcroft in 1950, in the little wooden store that still stands empty on the corner of Queen Street behind the Bribie Bowls Club. He had the first and only Pharmacy there for a few years, before moving to the old Electricity Generator building, corner of Banya & Foster Street, and then to a new Shop in Toorbul Street opposite Brennan Park, where “La Vera” is today. Rowcroft had one leg, from an accident years before, and was by then 80 years old. He sold the Chemist business

to Don Mullen in 1961, who became Bribie’s muchrespected Pharmacist for the next 30+ years. Don Mullen has been connected with Bribie all of his extraordinary life, and he and his wife Anne have played many key roles in the c o m mu n i t y ove r t h e l a s t 6 0 ye a r s .

DON MULLEN

Born in Brisbane in 1934 Don came regularly with his family to their holiday home at 57 Toorbul Street Bongaree as a boy. He has vivid memories of the fun and freedom of Bribie in those early days, catching big fish, wandering in the bush and playing with other children on camping holidays here. From 1953, Don studied Pharmacy at Brisbane Technical College and was an apprentice at the Chemist shop of Don Condie at West End. In those days it was hard practical work with dual training experience, rather than a University education. Don did two years of National

Service before heading off to London for an essential “worldly” experience. He worked at Chemists in London to save money for frequent trips to Europe. It was on one of these trips to Germany that he met an Aussie Registered nurse Anne from Broken Hill……..and fell in love. They returned to Brisbane for Anne to complete Midwifery nursing at Brisbane Women’s Hospital, before they were married in September 1961. Meanwhile, Don came back to his beloved Bribie to buy the

only Chemist business on the island, from old John Rowcroft. The young married couple lived in the flat behind the newly built Toorbul St. Chemist Shop and began dealing with the many “treatment” needs of the small but special community. There were many characters here then, including recluse artist Ian Fairweather, whose skin cancer and damaged ear nurse Anne was required to treat. The newly married couple chose Bribie as a home and business because the land

was still quite cheap, and knowing the new Bridge would increase opportunities, as well as the many War Veterans and Pensioners with pharmaceutical needs. In those days, there was no resident Doctor at all on Bribie, but Doctor Tom Sanderson would come from Caboolture for one day each fortnight. There was no Hospital at Caboolture, the nearest being Redcliffe. There were very few off the shelf “medicines” and Don diagnosed medical requirements, and mixed and “Dispensed” treatments as prescribed. In October 1963 the Bribie Bridge opened and business changed dramatically. Don’s parents retired to live in their Bribie holiday home, Don and Anne soon had a daughter Sue and son David, and they outgrew the Shop and home. In 1965, they opened a new Chemist shop in the developing precinct of First Avenue and had two shops that had been

Thornley's garage and bus depot. Businesses continue to grow and the population increased. Ten years later in 1975, they opened a new Chemist shop in Benabrow Avenue.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

The Mullen’s would evaluate patients in conjunction with a retired ambulance bearer and nurse, or the distant Doctor by phone, but it was not until 1975 that Don arranged for the first resident Doctor for Bribie. This was the young Lynn Kennedy, who initially set up practice in Hall Avenue, but soon moved to be beside Dons Chemist shop. Community services and public attitudes were different in those days. Don recalls that the Doctor, Policeman and Chemist seemed to be “On-Call” virtually 24 hours a day, to respond to urgent needs. Bribie residents would not hesitate to ask for urgent help at any time of the day or night. These same people were also very involved in many community, social and Club activities. Don was a member of the original Fire Brigade, Chamber of Commerce, Returned Service League, Tennis, Cricket and other

sporting Clubs and regularly asked to chair and speak at public meetings. Similarly, Anne was on numerous committees, and as more Doctors came to the island,

she responded to the needs for specific home nursing. Work demands could vary greatly from day to day. Don remembers many times having to work 20-hour days, and at other times, he could practice his golf swing in Brennan Park when things were quiet. Don was a keen golfer and played at Caboolture when work demands allowed. In 1968 he was instrumental in an approach to the Lands Department for the allocation of land at Woorim to create a Golf Course. Together with several other stalwarts of Bribie, including his parents, the land was cleared to create 9 holes initially, which progressively grew to 12, 15 and finally 18 holes over the next few years. The creation of

community is very different, in a competitive and commercial world a long way from the old days of “Dispensed” medicine and daily prevention. Their services were often paid for “in-kind” with fish or crabs and homemade goodies, for services rendered.

the Bribie Island Golf Course & Club was a significant achievement for which they are rightly very proud. As time went by, they progressively sold their involvement in Chemist shops. First Avenue was sold in 1984 and Benabrow Ave. in 1993. Over the years, the Mullen’s purchased and built many different homes and properties around Bribie, and look back over a successful career with great pride and satisfaction.

sharing extensive knowledge of people and events, photos and documents, and participating in many Heritage events. I have known them for the last 17 years and it is my pleasure to pay this tribute to them.

CHEMISTS TODAY

Today there are numerous Doctors and Chemist shops on Bribie, and many people take daily pills and tablets readily available off the shelf. The role of the Chemist in today’s Bribie

When Don and Anne started here there was no Vet on the island, and they were often called upon to deal with sick or injured pets and wildlife. Even a circus Lion came to the Chemist shop in 1992. Many readers will have known Don and Anne Mullen for many years, and appreciate the great work they have done in our community for so long. They have been a great help to the Historical Society,

SPORT SHORINJIRYU KARATE, BRIBIE ISLAND DOJO

We thought we would write about the Shorinjiryu Koshinkai Karatedo, Seiryukan Dojo. Its’ history and aims, but let’s talk about the Karate Style first, Shorinjiryu Koshinkai Karatedo. “Shorinjiryu” means the School of the Temple in the Pines, referring to the Shaolin Temple in China while Koshinkai means the School of the Old and the New. Modern Shorinjiryu was established in Tokyo in 1947 by Kaiso Masayoshi Kori Hisataka. Kaiso Hisataka studied with and was a contemporary of many of the original Karate Masters in Okinawa before moving to Tokyo. Shorinjiryu in Australia established membership of the Japanese Shorinjiryu in 1977 and has continued to this day. The motto of Shorinjiryu Karatedo is “Spiritual development of individuality in mind and body.” No two students are the same and are allowed to progress at their own mental and physical pace. The philosophy of Koshinkai is that you can’t go forward without first looking back. Learn from history. Shorinjiryu Koshinkai Karate is internationally affiliated with the

Shorinjiryu Shinzen Kyokai in New York and has access to many of the senior ranked Shorinjiryu Instructors Worldwide. They have access to local, National and International competitions and all Australian grading’s are internationally recognized. Shorinjiryu Koshinkai Karatedo is a not for profit association with several Dojos in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. The Family Dojo of Lesley and Jim Griffin on Bribie is “Seiryukan”, which means “The Life Dragon Dojo.” The Dragon refers to the Griffin Family Crest and “Life” means that their Karatedo is a lifelong pursuit of excellence. The Dojo was named by the son of the Founder of Shorinjiryu Karatedo, Hanshi Masayuki Hisataka many years ago. Jim and Lesley commenced training with Shorinjiryu Karatedo in the early 1980s and have continued their unbroken journey since. Jim’s love of Karate commenced originally in the late 1960s and he joined Shorinjiryu after a break. Jim, 8th Degree Black belt and Lesley, 7th Degree Black Belt have both been awarded their “Shihan” or “Master” title while Jim has also been awarded the title of “Kyoshi” or “Associate Professor”, all their promotions have been awarded by internationally affiliated Senior Instructors. Apart from Jim and Lesley, there are three other Black Belt Instructors training at the Seiryukan Dojo at Bellara. They are not for profit and don’t run their Dojo as a business, Class sizes are kept small so the student has personal exposure to Black Belt Instructors

during their Karate training. Sensei Dee Foster, 3rd Degree Black Belt and Sensei Leisa Dunmore, 3rd Degree Black Belt, have been solid supporters of the Griffins for many years and their dedication to the improvement in the Seiryukan students is very much appreciated by all. Dee has followed Jim and Lesley from their original Kallangur Dojo, through their Burpengary Dojo and finally to the Bribie Dojo. She still lives at Kallangur and travels to Bribie for her training. She has been a supporter for around 20 years. Leisa is a local businesswoman and Grandmother who has supported the Griffins for over 10 years, her Jiujitsu cross-training has brought another positive element to the Dojo. Another Black Belt member is Eric Tabor, 1st Degree Black Belt, who has been with the Dojo for over 5 years and is happy to assist wherever he can. Being a Traditional Karate Style, Shorinjiryu Koshinkai Karate teaches self-defence, Kata (forms), two-person drills, fighting techniques and traditional weapons which includes Bo (staff) Jo (short staff) Sai (forked weapon) Eku (oar) and sword (for more senior members) Weapons training is gradually introduced to each student as they progress through the grades. Shorinjiryu Karatedo is a traditional Japanese Style and as such teaches traditional values of respect for yourself and others. “Karate begins and ends with Respect”

CROQUET MEETS PROBUS.

Kathy Vincent. For several years now the Croquet Club has held a charity event to support a worthy cause on the island. They have made donations to Dragons abreast, school chaplaincy and the Dementia Support workers to mention a few. Clubs on the Island are invited to come along and play croquet. It doesn’t matter that you have never played just come along and have fun raising money at the same time for a charity. Unfortunately, due to Covid, this hasn’t taken place. We hope to hold it this October with luck and will encourage local clubs to take part. More news of that at a later date. WHAT YOU NEED

► White Ceramic Mug ( which you can buy inexpensive at Wal-Mart or Target ) ► Painters Pens I got mine at Wal-Mart but any craft store would also carry them ► Stickers We tested out different types of markers for this gift to see which held up the best, Paint Markers were the best out of everything we tested. First wash out your ceramic mug. After it’s dried apply the stickers you want to use to create your design. Let your

INSTRUCTIONS child start drawing. After your child’s done with their drawing peel off the stickers to reveal the design. Put your mug in the oven and bake at 350 for 30 mins. NOTE: Only hand washed this and the design will stay up perfect. Also after baking the colors will darken a little so keep that in mind when choosing your colors for the mug!

1. Using one of your prints trimmed to the size and shape you like (mine were 10cmx10cm), trace squares onto cork tiles. Trim each square using scissors or an exacto knife and a ruler. If you use a knife be sure to protect your table surface with a glass cutting board or a self-healing mat. Set aside.

2. Also using one of your prints trimmed to size, trace squares onto back of vinyl book protector. This is the stuff libraries used to use to protect paperback books. (Do they still do that?) Trim each square of vinyl to size. You could also you laminating sheets. 3. Peel backing off of one vinyl square and adhere to front of one photo. If your photos are glossy you should be able to reposition vinyl if necessary. This will protect your photos from spills. Repeat for all photos. 4. Using a brush, apply Mod Podge/glue to a square of cork. Then affix photo to cork. Repeat for each photo and let dry.

HOME & GARDEN night and adjust positions, your mattress is likely the culprit. Because of the gradual degradation and softening of a mattresses materials, it loses its ability to provide crucial support for vulnerable areas like your neck, lower back, and hips. On top of that, as cushioning gets worn down, it can create painful pressure points.

IT'S JUST NOT FOR YOU

HAVE YOU

Got That Sinking Feeling? A MATTRESS IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF OUR EVERYDAY LIFE, AND YOU PUT A LOT OF THOUGHT INTO SELECTING JUST THE RIGHT ONE. UNFORTUNATELY, NO MATTER HOW AMAZING YOUR MATTRESS MAY BE, THERE COMES A TIME WHEN IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.

But how do you know when you need a new mattress? Here are some tell-tale signs:

SAGGING The most visible indication that a mattress needs to be replaced is sagging. It’s also a symptom that applies to all mattress types, as springs break down over time, memory foam gets softer, and the fibres in other materials compress - all of which lead to sagging. Don’t wait for a crater to form in the middle of your mattress. Sagging shouldn’t be ignored, as this can mean a lack of support for the most vulnerable parts of your body.

LUMPS AND BUMPS When the padding within the mattress shifts around over time, you may see lumps in your mattress. This uneven density can mean you’re not supported where you’re supposed to be. It can also cause uncomfortable pressure points, leading to unwanted aches and pains.

ACHES AND PAINS

Sleep is a time for our bodies to recover. A good night's sleep is just as important as a healthy diet and exercise. If you wake up with more aches and pains than before you went to bed, you can’t fall asleep, or frequently wake up during the

Sometimes everything is still perfectly fine with your mattress, but circumstances in your own life necessitate that you need to get a new one. This could be the case if you’ve sustained an injury, lost or gained a significant amount of weight, or have a new bed partner. If your mattress is still in the prime of its life but you’re not getting the support you need anymore, don’t feel guilty about letting it go. Even if your mattress is showing none of the above signs - if it’s more than ten years old, you should apply some scrutiny to it. Even if you think you’re sleeping fine, there’s a chance that you’ve just become slowly accustomed to a less than excellent sleeping experience. If you're thinking it might be time to replace your mattress, feel free to call in to our Woorim Beach showroom and try our full range. We are open 7 days to assist with your requirements.

ARE YOU A

Keeper OR A ne of my favourite reality television shows is Hoarders. It’s true that I sometimes have to shift a few things off the coffee table to watch it. Yes, I’m really quite disorderly. But once I’ve removed the pile of old newspapers, the stack of pizza boxes, the broken fan, empty CD cases, milk cartons and ironing baskets, I’m ready to rock and roll. The people who feature in this show definitely have a problem. I feel sorry for them. But you make your bed, and you lie in it. The trouble is that compulsive hoarding results in such squalid living conditions, the hoarder can no longer find her bed, let alone sleep in it. And lately, as the clutter builds up around me in my house, I’ve come to the realisation that I too am a closet hoarder. Sure, I’m playing reserve grade to the man in one episode of the TV show who had managed to hoard over a hundred guns, knives and other weapons. Lucky for any possible victims he was so incredibly depressed (and hemmed in

by junk) he couldn’t muster the energy to leave his bedroom, let alone conduct a mass shooting. Apparently there’s a National Hoarding and Squalor Conference which highlights the latest strategies for dealing with hoarding behaviours. It’s the word ‘squalor’ that gets me. Sadly, after doing some research, I believe I may have Squalor Syndrome. It’s also called Diogenes Syndrome, named after the Greek philosopher who rejected luxury and lived in a barrel. I’m not quite there yet, but I’m working on it. So, while I don’t live in a barrel (yet) it’s time to for me to face facts. I am indeed a hoarder. Admittedly when I renovated my kitchen, I got rid of a lot of stuff, but things are starting to reproduce again. The other day I discovered a rusted Bundt tin I haven’t used since the 80s. Then there are those olive skewers, and the fondue set. Where the hell did they come from? And why do I still have them? Sections within my hall cupboards are like darkest Africa. To get there I need a

headlamp, Malaria meds, a ladder and a map. And much like Doctor Livingstone I make amazing discoveries whenever I visit. The trouble with being a disorderly hoarder is that you can never find anything. So you end up multiples of every useless thing you ever bought. Think three avocado pitters, five identical sprinkler fittings and four toilet plungers. And let’s not speak of underthe-house or what I call Hoardistan. Unearthing the treasures lurking here calls for a steam shovel, a hard hat and a heavy-duty pick. I know there are boxes out in the far flung reaches of Hoardistan, but I’m not sure what’s in them. Ever since reading the story, Pandora’s Box in my Year Five reader, unmarked boxes trigger me. Seriously if under my house reflects my subconscious, I have significant mental health issues. I’m particularly bad with clothes – both the acquiring of new ones and hoarding old pieces. I’ve been through many clothes phases. There were the cheesecloth peasant tops and paisley skirts of my

hippy days. I’m sure they were fetching in their day. And I’m still weirdly fond of tie-dye (which by the way is making a comeback). Who could forget (try as we might) the shoulder pads of the eighties? We all looked like American gridiron players. There was the vintage phase, wearing fifties frocks and cute, beaded cardigans. Now I’m actually vintage myself and these things just make me look like a homeless person. ‘To everything, turn, turn, turn, there is a season’ or so the old song tells us. When we’re young it’s the time to gather; now that I’m older, common sense and health and safety issues tell me there’s a time for dispersing. It’s time to say ‘Enough!’ No more hanging on to stuff I don’t need. No more flogging that dead clothes horse. I am determined to transition from keeper to chucker. I am now on a mission to de-clutter my house, hall cupboard, wardrobe and hopefully in the process, my life.

Now where did I put the TV remote? Issue 147 Aug 27, 2021

HOMEMADE AIR FRESHENER If you're a frugal person or just love to do things yourself, you will love this hack. Get a spray bottle and pour two cups of water, one cup of alcohol and 10 drops of essential oil. Shake it well and there you go, your own homemade air freshener. VANILLA ON COTTON BALLS Another way to use vanilla to make your bathroom smell amazing is by putting a few drops of vanilla extract on a cotton ball and place it inside

the toilet paper roll. Each time the toilet paper moves the lovely smell of vanilla will spread in the room. Add vanilla to your lightbulbs in your bathroom or anywhere in your house This is a simple little trick but apply it carefully. Find the safest light in your home that doesn’t heat that much. Add a few drops of vanilla extract to a cotton ball or a cloth and then gently tap the cotton ball on the light bulbs, make sure not to cover it too much. When you flip on the lights, the heat will gently spread the scent and your home will smell amazing. This will not cause a fire because the vanilla will defuse as soon as the bulb gets heated. FABRIC SOFTENER IN THE TOILET TANK Just like how you can use the laundry detergent to make the bathroom smell good. You can use a fabric softener to do it as well. The fabric softener will even smell better because it’s made to give your clothes the best smell after washing it.

ello all and welcome back to 'Island Gardens'. Any time is a good time to start growing plants indoors. Countless studies have proven that indoor plants aid health and wellbeing, including reducing fatigue, stress and anxiety. They can boost healing and pain tolerance, and even ease dry skin and minimise headaches. For the office, they improve performance and focus. If you have a corner or two that gets good light, you might choose to buy some big ornate pots (with a base) or pick up a little table or 3 to place a pot on and have your plants' profile a little higher up so they're more visible above nearby furniture. This month I've had the delight of seeing Angelique and John at their home in Woorim where indoor plants have created an oasis. Here, outdoors meets indoors beautifully. Angelique and John love travelling and camping, so while they have lovely neighbours who will look after the plants when they're away, all the plants can continue being happy in their spot for a week (some longer) without any attention. In the photo with the large glass doors, closest to the camera is a Philodendron. I have a Monstera at home that receives dimmer light and it still thrives well. Another VERY perfect plant for dimmer light is a Zanzibar Gem which only need water once a month. This is a number one plant for anyone who says they can't grow plants. Next (in the glass doors photo) there's a palm in the middle. Great for having a variety of foliage, some good palms include the Alexander

by Peter Schinkel

and Kentia among others. Last in the photo is a stunning Spathiphyllum Sensation at the far end. Also known as a LargeLeaf Peace Lily, it has the wow factor - perfect for the corner it lives in. The key to a lot of indoor plants is that while they are often water-loving rainforest plants, only water them every few days or so - in winter once a fortnight. Also, Angelique has found that specialised indoor plant foods certainly work well in keeping them healthy. Check out the photo with the beautiful Maidenhair and two other fine-leaf pots under the blinds of the kitchen window. On those trips away, even these are left unattended for a week when by sitting on a base or dish with some water in it. The 3rd photo shows a plant stand. At the bottom is an Anthurium. Those glossy red leaves are so nice, and they are just about as tough as the Zanzibar Gem, so there's another must-have plant for those who think they can't grow plants. You will succeed now :-) ...on top of the stand above the Anthurium is yet another beautiful Maidenhair Fern. There are also many varieties of indoor ivy, bamboos, happy plants (stunning leaves), and so many more plants that I'll have to write another editorial on this. That should keep me in a job thanks Cherrie :-) ...and thank you Angelique and John for your contribution to the enjoyment of our readers and your warm hospitality.

See you all again in issue 149 on 24th September and as always - thanks for reading and happy gardening. Issue 147 Aug 27, 2021

What IS Compost ? By Anne Gibson COMPOST IS SIMPLY

DECOMPOSED OR DECAYED ORGANIC MATTER, CREATED DURING THE PROCESS OF COMPOSTING. It can be produced using a variety of methods and ingredients. As it ages and the living or dead plant and animal material breaks down fully, compost becomes stable. When these organic materials are no longer decomposing, they create a rich black soil known as ‘humus’ or ‘Black Gold’. It’s called black gold for good reason, as it’s a priceless resource for home gardeners! Compost is one of the most convenient and easy ways to return organic matter (such as food scraps or green garden waste) back into the soil. The nutrients are recycled to grow healthy plants. Compost is the basic building block of a healthy garden.

WHAT IS COMPOSTING? Composting is a natural process that turns raw organic ingredients into humus – the earthy, dark crumbly, fully decomposed end result. Microbes naturally digest the organic matter as food. Nature recycles organic matter all over the earth every day! As plants and animals die, the nutrients are returned to the soil. In your garden or even indoors, you can imitate this natural process and speed it up in a container or space where organic materials can decay, creating compost.

COMPOSTING WITH WORMS A worm farm is one of the easiest ways to compost organic matter. Why? Because the worms and microbes do the work for you! You just add small amounts of food 60 www.thebribieislander.com.au

or garden waste and they turn it into free plant food. Cool hey? The nutrient-rich vermicast (worm poop!) and liquid extract from a worm farm are two of the benefits of composting with worms. Think of composting as a way of ‘investing’ in your garden to create a valuable ‘asset.’ You can achieve a healthy ‘return’ with higher yields from your food crops. Composting is a sustainable way to save money, reduce your kitchen waste and landfill and tread lighter on our beautiful planet. There are both slow and fast composting methods, each with their pros and cons. If you have limited space for a compost system, consider an indoor bokashi bin to recycle your food waste. This is an anaerobic system that is compact and easy to use. Perfect for small households and apartments.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF COMPOSTING?

Aside from the sustainable benefits, you simply grow healthier plants and soil long term. It just makes sense to cycle nutrients from the garden to kitchen and back again, ‘closing the loop’ on waste. The healthier your soil, the less problems you have. These are just a few of the advantages of using compost. 1. It improves your soil quality = healthy plants + higher yields. 2. Helps add valuable nutrients to your soil, acting as a natural slow release fertiliser for plants and microbes. 3. Saves money by removing the need for expensive, chemical fertilisers that may harm humans and the environment. 4. Reduces the need for frequent watering

The Bribie Islander

by helping soil retain more moisture while still allowing the excess to drain away. An ‘insurance policy’ for drought. 5. Helps reduce and prevent pests and disease and increases soil life. 6. Assists in balancing soil pH (the measure of soil acidity or alkalinity). A buffer for soil imbalances that helps reduce plant stress. 7. Significantly improves soil structure so roots can easily expand and access nutrients. All good reasons to produce and utilise this asset!!!

HOW CAN YOU USE COMPOST? There are MANY uses. To kick start you, these are 4 easy ways to enjoy the benefits. 1. Add compost as an ingredient to improve the quality of your potting mix. 2. Use compost to slowly feed your plants over a long period instead of expensive chemical fertilisers. 3. Apply as a mulch on your pots and gardens to protect plant roots from sun/ wind damage, prevent erosion and reduce soil diseases. 4. Spread over your lawn as a top dressing, to add nutrients and fill in gaps to encourage healthier grass roots and thatch. Are you just getting started with composting? Don’t have a lot of space? You may find a small composting system or compost bin are easy options. Indoors, you can use a bokashi bin to process food scraps. Outdoors, you can use tumbler or bin systems that don’t require much room or effort for a rich reward. For more great tips and hints, please check out this website!!! https:// themicrogardener.com

Compost Hints & Tips

Grass clippings add necessary nitrogen to a compost pile, but be sure to mix with the “brown” materials that add carbon. Both are necessary for quick decomposition and rich compost. Piles made up of just grass will compact, slow down and start to stink. Do not compost fats, pet droppings or animal products. They will attract pests to the pile and can spread disease. Newspaper or plain white paper from the computer is excellent for composting – just remember to shred it first to speed up the process

Worms love coffee grounds! If adding ashes to your compost bin, do so sparingly. Plants that have been treated with pesticides and/or herbicides (weeds and lawn clippings) should be avoided. When in doubt, throw it out! Algae and seaweed make excellent additions to your compost pile. Be sure to rinse off any salts before using.

HOME & GARDEN Clean wooden pallets make excellent compost bins. Start with one pallet on the ground. Drive two metal stakes into each side. Slide additional pallets over each support and you have a bin ready for compost. Most kitchen waste, including vegetable peels, fruit rinds, coffee grounds, tea bags and egg shells, can be fed to worms. Meat and dairy products should not be used in a worm bin. Compost piles should remain damp but not wet. As you build your compost pile, make sure that each layer is moist as it is added. The surface should also remain damp (think of a wrung out sponge), especially during the summer months.

Anything that was living at one time is great for compost bins. Think of leaves, vegetables and grass clippings. Apply finished compost to your garden about 2-4 weeks before you plant, giving the compost time to integrate and stabilize within the soil. Lawn clippings and food scraps are about 80% water and need to be mixed with straw, woody waste or cardboard to keep your pile from becoming a slimy mess.

Grab a handful of compost from the centre of your pile and squeeze. If you get a few drops of water, that’s perfect.

Spend your money AT HOME! Install now and SAVE! • Bushfire rated gutter guard! • Stop Snakes, Rats & Possums! • Protect against Jacarandas and Pine Needles! • Bird proofing! • Stop leaves from blocking your gutters! • Improve the quality of your tank water!

Steve Williams and Mel Wall dragged it out of the water onto Jonkers Bribie 3 and we took it safely back to the base. We took the log off the boat, and then took the boat off the log. (That was a crew joke. Not mine!)

Retrieved from outside Pacific Harbour and placed on the bushes above high tide mark at Turners camp area. This could have been a real issue if left in the water.

On the way to Moreton Island for assist number 2 - it’s going to be a busy day!

A man has died in an aircraft crash near Bribie Island today. It is believed the man’s light aircraft took off from Caloundra at 7.20am today. Police were called to the scene at 9.25am where the aircraft had crashed in the Pumicestone Passage. The man was declared deceased at the scene. The Forensic Crash Unit and Scenes of Crime investigated the crash for the purposes of preparing a report for the Coroner. BOATING, FISHING & ADVENTURES

Fishing REPORT By: Bribie Bait, Tackle and Bikes The good news is that Summer Whiting is back, 35+ nice and fat. Along Woorim beach and Sandstone Point, best bait is bloodworms and yabbies.

From the Bongaree Jetty, Bream, Tailor, Parrot Fish and Jew. Excited fishers came and bought bloodworms again and again, the Parrot loved them.

With much better weather at the moment plenty of offshore boats are catching their boat quota of Pearlies and Snapper off Hutchison Shoals and Caloundra Wide.

Victor jigged Herring from the Jetty, he sent one out and was rewarded with a lovely Jew at 9.5 kg. The Crows Nest Fishing Club caught 14 Flathead, Grassy Sweetlips and Moses Snapper over the weekend, by all reports an excellent weekend.

TIPS FOR YOUR TRIP TO THE WASTE FACILITY

PLAN FOR YOUR TRIP WITH THESE HANDY TIPS:

1 Governments require residents, community organisations and commercial operators to recycle and recover more materials and reduce the amount of mixed waste being disposed in landfill. Targets have been set and a waste levy was implemented in 2019. 2 Save time at the waste facility with handy online hints, including check waste facility line-up videos and avoid peak times. 3 Fill your vehicle with recyclable and recoverable materials only. A load with recoverable materials plus unsorted general waste for landfill may require a 2nd trip over the weighbridge and add time to your visit. 4 Before you load the vehicle, residents are advised to use Search where to recycle or dispose to find out what items are accepted at your

local Council Waste Facility. Some materials are only accepted at specific sites. Common household items that must be brought to a major Waste facility (Bunya, Caboolture or Dakabin) include: • Bulky items including mattresses, lounges, furniture, fridges/freezers, air conditioners. • Construction/demolition materials have an annual limit of 2 tonnes per property, per year and include fencing, roofing, flooring, tiles, pavers, bricks, concrete, timber, metal, roofing, cabinets, landscaping materials.

5 Sort your load into items

for easy access to recycle or dispose at various locations in the Waste and recycling facility.

6 Check if there are

restrictions on the number/ volume of items for drop off and the Waste facilities that accept hazardous items including gas bottles, paint/ chemicals, motor or cooking oil, vehicle batteries, smoke alarms, fire extinguishers.

7 Asbestos is a hazardous

and regulated material, and is not included in 'Construction and demolition' disposals to Council waste facilities. Asbestos will incur a fee

for disposal. Health and safety restrictions apply and residents should engage a registered asbestos removalist.

8 Residents can dispose of more household items than annual and per visit limitations, but fees and charges will apply including the QLD Waste levy on unsorted or mixed materials disposed to landfill.

9 Please comply with QLD Covid lockdowns and weighbridge or caretaker requests for the safety of all visitors and workers.

Dear Editor, What’s the Cost of Chasing Zero COVID ? Some Australian leaders are now working on implementing restrictions aimed at achieving a “Zero COVID” outcome. For example, on Aug. 3, Prime Minister Morrison said that “short—hopefully—but strong lockdowns … [are] now our first response when it comes to dealing with the Delta strain.” The only reason politicians can make a vain commitment

to Zero COVID—chased through lockdowns—is because it costs them nothing to do so. In NSW itself, 214,400 jobs were destroyed in the first four weeks of the Greater Sydney lockdown. That means that every single job restored in the 2020-21 financial year has been wiped out in less than a month. Lockdowns destroy jobs, devastate small businesses, and deprive people of the human interaction that gives life meaning. ABS data shows that as of mid-July, while private sector

employment was only just above the pre-pandemic level, the public sector workforce has swollen by 12 percent. In fact, politicians and public servants have received multiple pay rises since the beginning of the pandemic. An analysis by the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA) revealed in June that the average Victorian public servant received an almost $1,600 pay rise, while the average privatesector worker saw their pay cut by over $1,200. A few days before that analysis was released, Queensland’s

politicians and public servants were confirmed to have received three pay rises before September 2022. Despite often claiming that we are “all in this together” it has been clear that Australia’s political class have detached themselves from the economic realities experienced by private-sector workers, small business owners, and young Australians—three groups particularly affected by lockdowns. CRIME IS CRIME IN ANY LANGUAGE...

Crime Stoppers Australia Chair Diana Forrester has said THANK YOU to everyone that completed their Census for 2021. Crime Stoppers have been using the 2016 Census for the development of its "CRIME IS A CRIME IN ANY LANGUAGE" campaign, and Ms Forrester went on to say that the Census data then reported that only two-thirds of the Australian population were born in Australia. The 2021 Census will update our data and provide a more accurate detail of how we live and communicate. Communicating our message in a particular language, such as Mandarin or Arabic or any Asian language, helps to educate more people about the benefits of Crime Stoppers. We want them to know when to share information with us, the types of information that is most valuable and to reinforce that they can do it anonymously. Advertising posters in Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Mandarin, Punjabi and Vietnamese have all been found very effective. It is important for Crime Stoppers to understand trends such as movements of people from urban to regional environments, changing population data and different issues impacting everyday Australians that fall within the Crime Stoppers remit. The data provided by the Census snapshot also influences the ways we engage the community and the types of advertising tactics and level of financial commitment required to achieve effective outcomes. A recent study conducted by Colmar Brunton for Crime Stoppers Australia aged 13 and over found 80 per cent of people believe the organization was highly trusted in keeping the community safe. It also found one in

five people with information about illegal activity say that not having to provide personnel details encourages them to contact Crime Stoppers. Crime Stoppers economic value to Australia has been estimated as $170 million dollars per annum, with an additional $66 million in added value from drugs being seized, property returned, and crimes being prevented. Every dollar invested in Crime Stoppers delivers an outstanding $11.15 in returned revenue. Every crime we can stop saves our money......... and sometimes lives.......
