Welcome to Hank’s Hangout Hank the dog’s favorite places to go with his human. Hank is The Brew’s 2 year old Anatolian Shepherd Mix adopted from Oklahoma City Animal Welfare. At 65 pounds, Hank is curious, playful, and loves attention.
He also loves to socialize when his human is out with friends or enjoying a meal and a drink, so we’ve enlisted Hank to help us find the coolest dog friendly hangout spots in Oklahoma City,
When you really think about it, Solos Park and Pub, located at 13310 Pawnee Drive at the Chisholm Creek, is a lot like a day camp for doggies. With three large yards for dogs to roam and romp, including a separate area for smaller or shy dogs, this pub/dog park is possibly THE ultimate dog hangout in Oklahoma City.
Solo's is a multi use, social concept for pups and their people, featuring a humans only indoor restaurant and bar, on leash patio, and off leash dog park in Chisholm Creek. brew, Solo’s Park and Pub is Hank’s choice for doing both while having fun
This little haven of canine comfort and fun may be the happiest place in Oklahoma City for those with and without a tail, the concept was actually born from a tragedy. Solo’s Park and Pub founder and owner Julianne Thomas’s 5 year old dog Solo was a member of Julianne’s family, a beloved pet that the family adored. Like most adults, Julianne and her partner went to work each day, and when not at work, they also had social obligations that took them away from their pet
In late 2018, Solo unexpectedly passed away alone at home while both his parents were working.
For Julianne, the idea that Solo’s last day on earth was spent alone while his parents worked was heartbreaking. They mourned that social obligations and office time took them away from Solo so much, so Julianne decided she would create a place for both pets and their families to socialize together.
Named after that happy go lucky dog, Solo’s Park and Pub became a place where free time can be enjoyed with all members of the pack
Solo’s is a bit different than your typical dog friendly, on leash patio. The large dog enclosures allow pups of all sizes to run and play, and staff “Bark Rangers” are trained to keep an eye on dogs as their human's drink and enjoy the menu of food inside The Rangers are more than
Solos Park and Pub is the Ultimate Dog-Friendly Hangout Because It Was Created FOR

If you’ve been in northwest Oklahoma City, chances are you’ve driven past it many times. Noticed it as you made your way to your intended destination Probably wondered about it and made a note to stop in there “one of these days ” It’s Strebel Creek Winery we’re talking about here
Located on North MacArthur between Hefner and 122nd, it was the first winery in Oklahoma City and began when a frustrated wife issued an ultimatum to her husband Dr Gary Strebel started experimenting with some wild grapes that were growing on the land when they purchased it over 40 years ago. He and his wife, Sherry, first made jam from the grapes, then Gary decided to try his hand at making wine. His first batch consisted of 9 bottles, which he offered to some friends in a blind tasting Everyone said they liked the “mystery wine” better than all the other commercially made wines, and Gary knew he was onto something. A few years into his new hobby found his wife growing increasingly annoyed because, in her words, the wine was taking over the house. She told Gary that he either needed to stop making it or start selling it. So, he added on to the barn that was an original structure on the property, built a tasting room and a processing room, and that’s when Strebel Creek Winery was born.
Opening a winery in the early 2000s in Oklahoma was an arduous task, and Gary spent months working with the City Council and various state and federal agencies to get proper clearance to open for business, which finally happened in 2008
In addition to the small vineyard in the front of the property and the tasting room, there is a gift shop which rivals any I’ve seen, even in some of the larger, more well known wineries I’ve visited in California. It’s Sherry’s venture, and she’s done a great job of stocking the store with all kinds of fun and interesting items, including wine merch (of course), household items, bags, accessories, jewelry, and a good amount of OU and OSU gift items Even if you’re not a wine fan, it’s a little hidden gem that you should take a minute to visit, especially if you’re looking for a unique gift The selections are plentiful, and the prices are very reasonable.
And, oh yes, there’s wine available too. Lots of wine. We sampled several varietals, including whites, pinks, and reds, and there was not a one in the bunch that I didn’t think I would enjoy drinking in much higher quantities. But I’ll let you be the judge when you go for your tasting.
Gary, also known as Dr. Strebel he is still a practicing physician does all the growing, picking, processing, and bottling himself at the rate of about 5,000 bottles per year. All the wines are sold strictly from the winery They don’t sell in any stores, nor do they ship So, to enjoy Strebel Creek wines, you have to go into the winery, and I’ll just say that it would be well worth the visit And as we get into the warmer months, the patio would make a great place to relax and enjoy a glass before making your purchases to take home
Each month we strive to give you suggestions for a day trip that will make you want to gas up the car and make the roughly one to two hour trip to the part of the state we have explored for you This month we made our way to the Ducan/Marlow area, ate some incredible food, tasted some delicious wine, and sampled some superb craft beer.
Kochendorfer Brewing Co.
You will find Kochendorfer Brewing Co just off the beaten path between Marlow and Duncan just down McCurdy Road. It really all started back in 2010 when Chris and Laura Kochendorfer met Lenny and Kathryn Cripps and as they say, it’s all history from there. Realizing that they shared a love for craft beer Kochendorfer Brewing Co.opened its doors in November 2019 and over the past few years, these beer lovers have pretty much perfected the art of brewing beer.
When asked about the story behind their brand they told us, “We wanted the brand to reflect our personality and passion for people from all walks of life, our community, and craft beer It represents the playfulness of the founders, the passion of the brewers, and the love of storytelling ” And we would say that they absolutely hit the mark.
Beer is their business and they offer an array of craft beer that even the pickiest beer drinker will be able to find one or two that they like. Kochendorfer focuses on making drinkable beer. Some may not understand that statement as they like when you have to choke a beer down because it’s either too bitter, too stout or just too funky. That’s not this style, they believe beer should be enjoyed From their Cream Ale to the Imperial Stout, you have incredible flavor without all the weird faces trying to figure out what you think about it They have a Stout that comes in at 3.8% that would go perfectly with Sausage and Eggs or potato pancakes That’s a great way to start a day. With the name, you would assume, and would be correct that they make a great Hefeweizen Their Dunkelweizen isn’t too shabby also and goes on my would drink anytime list. Recently, they decided to play a little bit for a good cause and created a one of a kind Sour Wheat that has a lemony, citrusy tartness that makes it incredibly refreshing. The can design was part of a Collaboration with AutismOklahoma and looks amazing.
Each beer has its own story tying it to a fantastical tale that takes you to unseen and far away places, puts you through twists and turns, and then brings you to Oklahoma. Their Irish Red Ale tells the tale of Red, a fiery red haired maiden with a temperament to match kicking some major booty in the 1800s. The Imperial Stout tells us how Viktor, an animal loving gentle soul that was born in the 1800s in Russia and found himself on a journey with the circus. Check out their website at kochendorferbrewing.com for the rest of the stories.
If you have never been to Kochendorfer’s, you are in for a real treat! When you walk in you are greeted with a welcoming vibe that just puts you in the mood to drink some craft beer and play a game of pinball yes they have pinball! If you like to enjoy the outdoors, their patio is simply fantastic There is plenty of seating, several fire pits, corn hole, tetherball, and a walking trail! It is also family friendly with an area just for the little ones to play.
Kochendorfers Brewery always has fun events happening Open Thursday through Sunday, they host a variety of events each week including music,
games, yoga, and more! Make sure and follow their social media for upcoming events and beer releases.
Tucked on a side street off of main street in Marlow is Cotton Blossom Winery and you know we had to stop in and check it out We were greeted with a friendly smile and sat down with Megan Bell, the owner of the place, to ask her some questions.
Cotton Blossom Winery opened its doors almost exactly 3 years ago What started as a way to keep his mind off his emotionally taxing job as a hospice nurse, Megan’s husband Ryan started dabbling in wine making at night in his downtime. The more he made, the more people wanted him to make He was just doing it for fun but told Megan that one day he would open a winery… and guess what …he did.
You know the saying when you are in Rome? Well when you are in a winery, you have to do a wine tasting They make a little bit of everything, from cabernet sauvignon to the sweeter fruit flavored wines There is something here for everyone, even the most discerning wine drinkers. The most popular is the Orchard peach based wine. No grapes, just peaches. It's deliciously refreshing! And just wait…rumor has it that Ryan makes wine infused frozen yogurt on Saturdays in the summer that are absolutely divine!
There is always something happening at Cotton Blossom Winery. Do you like Bingo? You can test the odds here. Like to paint? Grab your brush, sip some wine and make a masterpiece. Want to learn how to create eye appeasing charcuterie boards? Well, you can learn how and walk away with a board made just for you! Make sure and check out their social media for a calendar of fun and exciting events
When asked what the future holds for Cotton Blossom Winery, Megan told us that they keep outgrowing their space lol. This is the second location and they are already growing to the point that they are thinking about building a bigger space. Not a bad problem to have!
Megan and Ryan are honored that the town has supported them and they even have a partnership with Kochendorfer Brewing Co by carrying a few of each other products. Teamwork makes the dream work and it is definitely working here
Cotton Blossom Winery is open Thursday 12 pm 6 pm, Friday and Saturday 12 pm 8 pm.
There are few things in life as good as a perfectly built sandwich and I don’t know anyone that does it better than this little shop in the middle of Marlow, OK. Big Belly Deli has a menu that is inspiring. Yes, the sandwiches are amazing, but they also have a weekly menu that is incredibly well done. They love to get creative and it is very evident Big Belly also has premade meals for those families on the run. If you are lucky, you can also find their food truck out and about. If you don’t feel like being lucky, you can check their schedule on their social media.
The word around town is that their Reuben is one of the best in the state, I know, I have been spreading that rumor. It would take a week to go through and tell you what we think about all of their sandwiches because they don’t do anything that isn’t amazing. That’s just the sandwiches, the salads are top shelf as well. If a sandwich or a salad doesn’t sound good, you
can get breakfast all day, like the Lox Bagel or my personal favorite the Fried Egg Sandwich. There I go, making myself hungry again, on to the next spot
You can’t talk about food in Marlow without talking about Giuseppe’s. For 26 years Giuseppe’s has been creating amazing food in Marlow. Brian Dicintio first brought this italian cuisine to town and has since passed the torch onto two brothers, Tandy Banks and Brandon Floyd (Chef Partner). Banks and Floyd have taken Guiseppe’s to amazing levels giving Marlow, OK an approachable, but expertly done menu that would be hard to find it’s equal in any small town in America The focus on quality ingredients and expert presentation is unmatched in the area It may be fine dining, but they also focus on relating to their town.
You can’t go many places and find a Pan Seared Beef Filet with Herb Roasted potatoes with seasonal vegetable garnish for the same price you would pay for a hamburger in some big cities. The menu is full of amazing dishes and pairs amazingly with the local and global drink selection. That is not to mention the coffee shop serving amazing Viridian Coffee drinks I got a fantastic Latte for my quick walk over to the next spot.
This one calls for a quick story In the mid 70s Brian Dicintio decided to hit the road from East Chester, NY for a road trip down the East Coast, then to Mexico and headed back north, but got to Marlow, OK where his car broke down. The rest is history. Brian proceeded to open the original Dicintio’s Cucina in 1986, then opened Guiseppe’s Italian Cuisine in 1996, then decided to sell it in 2007 and in 2017 decided to revive the Dicintio’s Pizza Cucina brand in it’s current location with it’s famous New York style pizza recipe that is now Oklahoma famous. Then is 2020, Joe Hennan jumped at the opportunity to take the reigns. Brian Dicintio still comes in on Fridays and Saturdays to toss dough and cut up with customers.
Coming into Dicintio’s is an experience that you don’t get a lot these days, with the feel of New York and the dough being tossed, not to mention the smell. The stone bottom ovens release amazing aromas from the handmade dough It also does an amazing job at creating a light but sturdy crust on the pizzas. The pizzas are what you would expect from a true New York Style pizza place You have the choice of amazing red sauce, rich Alfredo sauce, succulent Basil Pesto, or their homemade creamy ranch sauce
Dicintio’s doesn’t just provide great pizza, and other italian favorites, they connect with you. It’s that small town feel you get when you find people that love where they are and what they are doing Joe and his
team does an amazing job at making everyone feel like they are at home in Marlow, OK.
So, that concludes our little road trip. The takeaways are, spend a weekend, because there is no way you can get all the food, beer and wine experiences done in one day If you haven’t spent much time in small towns, be prepared for super friendly people and to wave at everyone.
I am glad that I am not the only one that believes it’s time to get back to the basics of beer. This month’s featured brewery is built on that very principle. From the beginning, Core4 was inspired by the 4 main ingredients in beer, water, yeast, hops, and grain. “We really wanted our brand to take Craft Beer back to approachable styles,” said Core4 co owner Duck Buchanan. The name also applies to the fact that they have 4 owners. As homebrewers, the Core4 team decided to open to the public in March of 2020 after lots of planning, conversations, and “drinking about it.” Which happens to be how I will now forever make my big decisions. Unfortunately, something else happened in March of 2020 (Covid) and after being open for three days, they were forced to close for two months.
The good news is they survived and beer won out. Core4 was finally able to open its taproom in the 100+ year old Paramount Building on Film Row. I’m not saying the building is haunted, but Katy enjoys the Oklahoma Sunset Amber Ale. Core4 is a taproom focused brewery. They don’t do a lot of distribution because they would rather focus on creating an experience for their customers. As part of that focus, there is always something going on in the taproom. Trivia Mondays, Game Night Tuesdays, Vinyl Wednesdays, Thursday Open Mic, Live Music and a Food Truck nearly every Friday night, and acoustic shows on Sunday afternoons. They also host a Final Friday Art Hop where they showcase a local artist and turn over the space to them for an art show. Their motto is "You may come in a Stranger, but you will Leave a Friend."
Besides the ingredients in beer, Core4 was inspired by drinking beers from local legends such as Bruce Sanchez of Twisted Spike, Patrick Lively, and Ross "The Angry Scotsman" Harper; hanging out at the local breweries, and Homebrewing with the Red Earth Brewers. It’s clear that Core4 is on its way to being the inspiration for other up and coming beer artists. The focus on customer service is a breath of fresh air. Sitting at the taproom is less of a transaction and more of a conversation with an old friend. The beer has an approachable nature to it that is welcoming.
So, let’s talk beer Core4 started with a beer that is Oklahoma through and through and even has the colors that we love so much about this state The Oklahoma Sunset Amber Ale has a deep rich color that is smooth, and drinkable with hints of caramel and malts The Soul Shine is a Blonde Ale that doesn’t slouch in it’s flavor while being light and refreshing If fruit is what you love, the Make a Mango Crazy is a fruited Gose that is a perfect combination of sour and sweet with just the right notes to make a man go crazy. Those that know me, know I love a good stout and the Death before breakfast is loaded with Coffee, Chocolate, and aged with Oak and Bourbon. It’s a beer that wakes you up and dances along your taste buds while being smooth and approachable.
One thing you will notice about Core4 is the naming of the beers Drinking beer shouldn’t just be about guzzling gallons of liquid in order to get a buzz. It’s a conversation and the names of the beers at Core4 are conversation starters. When you are at the taproom, you can always find one of the owners that are more than wiling to share the history of the names. There is always a story attached, and it’s what makes Core4 special, other than the really good beer. It’s time we get back to the Oklahoma values of never meeting a stranger and always being willing to have a conversation over a cold beer. Just get rid of that cheap crap in the fridge and come to the taproom. I would say that Core4 is the thing we need after the past couple years of isolation. So, to the owners, I salute you and thank you for being the thing that we didn’t know that we needed.
Core4 Brewing Company LLC 7 N Lee, OKC, Oklahoma 73102
There is always a story behind every good musician and Corey Matthews’s is no exception. At the age of thirteen, Corey put his hands on a new, bright red bass guitar, a present from his parents, and the world of music was opened to him Just a year later he had taught himself how to play and singing came shortly after
Corey, originally a Kansas boy, has been in Oklahoma for about 5 years now and we can thank Mr. Kendall Jones who owns Kendle's Bar on South May Ave for that Corey speaks fondly of Mr. Jones and added, “He offered for me to get away from everything for a minute and come down and be a guest bartender at his bar and play a few shows here and I never left I couldn’t be more thankful ” If you were lucky enough to have caught Corey play, you are well aware of the power and range of his raspy voice In addition to Kendles Bar, Corey has since played in venues in Oklahoma City such as The Drunken Fry, Fuel Bar and Grill, Brewskeys, and the Roadhouse Bar and Grill.
Corey is the driving force that brought a new genre of music to the forefront It is called STAWMP which is a combination of Blues and Soul with hints of Bluegrass. When asked about the inspiration behind his music, Corey admits that he plays for the working class. “The entire purpose I play a live show is so that the people who work their butts off all week, get at least an hour or two hours during the evening to escape from all the crap that happened all week. So, it’s really just the fact that I want to give people who deserve it the chance to let go and enjoy themselves.” Well, that is a pretty good reason, Mr. Matthews!
Life has given Corey Matthews twists and turns for sure About 3 years ago Corey found himself in a deep depression. He was doing nothing but sitting around his house drinking alcohol and eating and at that time he was weighing in at around six hundred pounds He openly admitted, “I was on a fast track to killing myself.” One day his friend, Bob Massa, showed up and told him to take a shower and get dressed, we are going to Nashville. He gave Corey no choice and together the two of them set off for the city of music leaving Oklahoma behind.
Nashville was an eye opener for Corey, it was the first place that he was openly booed off stage dealing a huge punch to his ego But it was also the place where something incredible happened If you know Nashville, then you know of the Commodore Grille Each night they host an open mic night providing an opportunity for anyone to play and sing. This venue is where songwriters test their music and world class touring musicians have performed. Corey gave it a shot and for the first time in history, they allowed somebody to play an encore! “It was definitely a big boost to my self esteem and encouragement to continue on and I cannot thank Bob Massa enough. He was my best friend and will never be forgotten,” Corey said of his late friend.
Corey has played music under a couple of different names. The first was Johnny Black, but by far the most successful group that he was a part of was The Highway Walkers. Here he combined his talents with David Wilson, David Neal, and Embrae Le Veen. Together they played gigs like the State Fair, performed live on Fox 25 KOKH, and were guests on the Katt Radio Station. The future looked bright and from every direction, there were indications of this band going far. Then Covid 19 happened. And as we all know, Covid was pretty much a death sentence for the entertainment industry. Ultimately The Highway Walkers had to go their separate ways.
Last year something especially important that many are not aware of is that Corey suffered from kidney failure and
B Y K A R I H U S K E Y
had to spend a lot of time in the hospital On top of that, he also lost his dad, his grandma, and his friend Bob Massa. Corey explains, “I know that a lot of venues were disappointed and angry that I had to cancel shows and it caught everybody off guard, but between the kidney failure, the death of my father, the death of my grandmother, and the death of my best friend Bob Massa, unfortunately, I wasn't in a good headspace physically or mentally and I needed time to recover ” And now that he has, he is jumping back into the music that he loves. He is even planning to release a two part album in the next few months. The name of the first part is Cards That You Play which will be more of a catchy upbeat party vibe and the second is The Hand That You're Dealt, a more serious heartfelt tribute to the things that are in his heart.
So, when are we going to see Corey Matthews the crooner back on the stage? Much sooner than you think make sure and follow his social media for upcoming dates which is @STAWMP on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

Welcome back everyone and happy Cinco De Mayo, I’m excited because this year it’s on a thirsty Thursday too! I love this time of year, we have the warmer weather, thunderstorms and getting out to have drinks and good food with friends and family One of my favorite things to make when having friends over are my Green Chile Chicken Enchiladas, this is a quick and easy recipe you will have done in under two hours, not too bad for some homemade chicken enchiladas Now for the ones out there that know me they know I’ll pair this with some Don Julio 1942 with a couple cubes of ice, now I know that’s not for everyone so for something a little milder I suggest a nice white, like a pinot grigio or even a Malbec So, let's dive right into this month’s recipe and a tequila or two.
Chile Chicken Enchiladas
Total time: 1 hour 30 minutes Serves:4 5
First preheat your oven to 420 degrees F and spray a 9x13 baking dish with some cooking spray. Next, in a saucepan, melt the butter then add the flour and cook for about 2 minutes, then add the chicken stock and whisk until smooth then add the onions Cook until the sauce thickens and add in the chili powder and cumin, remove from the heat, and stir in the sour cream and diced green chiles and now season with the salt and pepper to your desired taste. For the enchilada filling, in a large bowl, mix the shredded chicken and cheese blend together and put aside. Now to make the enchiladas, I like to dip the corn tortilla in the warm sauce to help prevent it from breaking when rolling up. So, dip the tortilla in the sauce, add the chicken and cheese mix, roll it up and place in the prepared baking dish, of course seam side down so it stays rolled up. Once you've filled the baking dish, take the remaining sauce, and pour over the enchiladas evenly, sprinkle a little more cheese on top and bake for about 25 30 minutes Once done remove from the oven and sprinkle the chopped cilantro over the top and it’s ready to serve.
2 Cups Four Cheese Mexican Blend Shredded Cheese 2 Cups Shredded Chicken ¼ Yellow Onion, Small Diced 8 10 Corn Tortillas 3 Tablespoons Butter 3 Tablespoons Flour 2 Cups of Chicken Stock ½ Cup Sour Cream 1 (4oz) Can of Diced Green Chiles ½ teaspoon Cumin ½ teaspoon Chili Powder Salt and Black Pepper to taste 1 Tablespoon Fresh Cilantro
Beer The great unifier I mean, think about it Who doesn’t love beer? It's been around for thousands of years, on every continent and in most civilizations It’s help people stay alive when it was safer to drink than water It's given folks the confidence to change the world, like the colonist during the revolution There’s even been God’s and Goddesses dedicated to the creation of beer It's easy to see just how much humans love and depend on the magic liquid However, with all this love of beer, most people don’t know anything at all about how to make or brew beer Insert the creation of homebrew clubs A group dedicated to the art of brewing at home Hundreds have popped up across the US Including one, right here in Oklahoma City, The Red Earth Brewers
Before we dive into exactly what Red Earth Brewers are and do, let's get a quick history on the beer industry here in Oklahoma One might assume, or just simply not remember, but being part of the beer industry in Oklahoma hasn’t always been easy In fact, home brewing was illegal in the state until 2010 The same year that the law was changed, Red Earth Brewers was founded by Gail Johnson Shore, who also started the local homebrew store, aptly named The Brew Shop What started out 12 years ago as a group of beer drinkers has turned into a group of over 100 fermenting friends In 2014, the club reached a new milestone and became a 501c (7), and in 2015 won a scholarship from Grandstand that help cement them in the homebrewer's world
The mission of Red Earth Brewers is to promote the education and appreciation of homebrewed beers, ciders, wines, and meads while at the same time forging relationships with the Oklahoma brewing community This is of course accomplished through education, research, dissemination of information as well as volunteering in all areas related to the craft of brewing This mission is kept alive by REB members and President Nick Hodge Hodge has been a member of REB since 2014 “I had been brewing for about 4 years before joining Red Earth At the time (2014), there were two clubs in OKC One was free, and one (Red Earth) had dues associated. Red Earth seemed more
active and organized at the time, but I wasn’t sure that I would have the time for a club, nor an avenue to give back to a club that I might join Turns out, I had both ” Hodge recalls, “One evening at the annual Zoo Brew event, I happened upon the Red Earth Brewers table and began talking to some of the members Over the course of a few minutes, I quickly realized that this was the club I needed to be a part of They were friendly, eager to talk about brewing and were interested in what I was doing, and very helpful with the quick questions I had about my processes I am a software developer by trade I began building a new website for Red Earth After presenting it to the club, they created a spot on the officer board so that I could help use that website to deliver much needed communication to members and prospective members From there, I became the Vice President (2016) and began growing our competition footprint That year Red Earth Brewers hosted its first BJCP sanctioned competition A year later, I became President I am currently in my second term as club President My primary goals for Red Earth are to foster an ever growing community of brewers, promote the education of homebrewing, and to build our competitions while maintaining a healthy and responsible atmosphere where people can enjoy the art of brewing beer ”
Red Earth Brewer’s members are active in various brewing completions locally and nationally They support their members on becoming a cicerone, a certification that one can get with the highest level of knowledge for beer, as well as Beer Judge Certification Program REB members are nationally known through competitions and participation in the American Homebrew Association This past month REB hosted the Red Earth Brewers Spring
Brew Off competition with over 200 entries from homebrewers all over the US. With entries from stouts and sours to pilsners and ambers, everything in between, choosing one to take home the winning title. REB furthers its mission by supporting local homebrewers and providing them with the education and resources to improve their brewing. They also have made a massive impact on breweries here in Oklahoma City and the State. Out of the 67 breweries in the state of Oklahoma, 9 have been started by members of Red Earth and currently, there are several others that are in planning stages and will soon be among the industry. Prior to 2013, Oklahoma had only 10 breweries. So, it's safe to say that homebrewing has changed the state and its access to great craft beer. Along with supporting local homebrewers, REB stays connected to the community by offering to help with local fundraisers like OKC Marathon, Zoo Brew, Mesta Festa, and OK Bio Brewfest to name a few. Several of OKC’s local breweries often reach out to Red Earth when they need extra hands with tasks like canning day help, pouring event or serving help, building taproom furniture, or anything else with which they need help REB club members offer a lot, however, according to Hodge, “Most importantly, they form a community of individuals who have a significant interest in brewing That community then fosters education and outreach to help each other become better brewers and maybe one day start breweries of their own ”
Anyone can be a great homebrewer just like anyone can join Red Earth Brewers All craft beer enthusiasts who are 21yrs of age or older may become a member of Red Earth Brewers, regardless of brewing experience Yearly dues of $30 are required to become and maintain membership Guests may attend up to 3 meetings without signing up to be members Red Earth Brewers meet twice a month The first is their formal meeting that is on the third Tuesday of every month Additionally, they gather on the first Thursday of each month for an informal Happy Hour as a way for prospective members and friends to gather and hang out at one of the local breweries or craft beer establishments
Whether you’re a lover of beer, a hopeful brewer, or just curious about being active in a great club, Red Earth Brewers are here for you Simply put, homebrewing is easy to get started You can purchase a simple setup from a local store, from around $150 200 Learn to brew your favorite style and don’t worry The member of Red Earth Brewers are here to help every step of the way Cheers to Beer, the great social connector
Every year, residents, and visitors flock by the thousands to any number of Oklahoma’s recreational water habitats Whether your fancy is to vacation, catch a few rays on the deck of a boat, catch the big one, discover the freedom of kayaking, sit in awe of one of Oklahoma’s spectacular sunrises or sunsets, or simply lay under the stars, there is a destination for you
There does not appear to be a single spot across the Heartland that does not glisten from the air. Oklahoma boasts more shoreline than either coast combined, and it is home to more than 200 lakes, and over 500 creeks and rivers. But which lake is most ideal? Each has unique features and activities that set it apart from the others Lake
Located near downtown OKC, Lake Hefner has one of the most recognizable landmarks in the state. Constructed in 1999, the Lake Hefner Lighthouse was inspired by the second oldest lighthouse in the U.S., still operating today. The OKC model was built to the same specifications as working lighthouses, which makes it designed to withstand tornadoes or anything else Oklahoma weather can throw at it
Close to downtown, Hefner offers lake goers a wide array of activities. Over nine miles of paved trails make the lake a premier destination for walking, rollerblading, jogging, and cycling For water enthusiasts, one can find an activity for every lifestyle, including kayaking, boating, sailing, and kitesurfing
If sitting and relaxing is more your speed, then the eighteen miles of shoreline and host of pavilions, benches, and parks are ideal for helping you unwind Don’t forget to absorb the ambiance at one of the many lakefront restaurants. From Louie’s Grill & Bar to Red Rock Canyon Grill, one can easily find something to satisfy the pallet
Located adjacent to historic Route 66, Lake Overholser offers a relaxed atmosphere with playgrounds and covered pavilions. Covered piers and docks provide a place of quiet solitude for fishing. Water sports enthusiasts will enjoy over 1,500 surface acres ideal for kayaking, boating, jet skiing, and sailing. A combination of paved roadways and trails offers walkers, joggers, and cyclists almost nine miles of scenic and relaxing atmosphere
For more information on these and additional lakes, visit Travel Oklahoma at www.travelok.com. You can also learn about Riversport Adventures and their services at www.riversportokc.org
If getting out of the city piques your interest, head east. It is hard to imagine that over 85 miles of shoreline form Lake Thunderbird. Also, a state park, Thunderbird hosts tens of thousands of people each year, and one can find almost every activity imaginable. Public hunting areas are available for guests during deer and waterfowl season It is also a boating and fishing hotspot. The lake’s perimeter can be anything from sandy shores to rolling oak covered hills Camping facilities are also available.
Two municipally owned lakes make up Shawnee Twin Lakes. This location is popular all year round for boating and fishing activities, and it also has designated swimming areas. Lake #1 includes pavilions, campsites, boat ramps, and an enclosed fishing dock. Lake #2 also offers these amenities, but it also has an added benefit of a kayak launch. The second lake is also a popular meeting location for the Pottawatomie Kayak Club.
South of Shawnee, and smaller in comparison to many other bodies of water in the state, is Tecumseh Lake This picturesque location is ideal for recreational activities, including fishing, picnicking, camping, and it is perfect for smaller watercraft such as kayaks. The lake is full of scenic nooks on its southern shore, and it is often not crowded It is a location worth coming back to many times and watching the sunset
Located in central Oklahoma, Lake Konawa is one of the state’s premier fishing locations. Seldom crowded, this location offers boaters over 1,300 acres of surface area and scenic views. For anglers, the lake is stocked with a variety of fish, and it has twenty miles of shoreline for year round fishing. A few quaint fishing docks are here too. Kayakers will also find hours of peace and tranquility as they navigate around the water’s edge to explore the lake’s hidden coves and access areas many boaters cannot
If making it to one of the state’s many lakes is not an option, or if you are unsure which lake to try, Riversport Adventures might be for you OKC’s Boathouse District is home to the primary location for Riversport Adventures Guests can learn surfing, skiing, kayaking, or whitewater rafting. There are activities for every age group. However, they also have two additional locations at Lakes Hefner and Overholser Both sites are ideal for kayak and stand up paddleboard (SUP) rentals and lessons.

A few years ago someone had the idea of taking an old office building just outside of downtown OKC and turning it into a unique restaurant and bar concept, complete with a cool patio. It has taken a little bit, but the building has finally come into its own. Under new ownership and with amazing talent, I believe that Eatery and Cocktail Office at the Union has the ability to live up to its potential. To say that I am excited about the recent changes is an understatement. The team that has consistently delivered excellence from Cafe 7 for years and the unique style and quality of The Hamilton have rolled up their sleeves and taken on a new challenge.
The location of the Union building was begging for a food forward restaurant and bar with a focus on creating amazing food and high quality cocktails In sampling the menu, I can thoroughly say that they nailed it Under the leadership of Kari Garrett, a rising star in the OKC food scene, Eatery and Cocktail office at the Union has built a concise but perfectly executed menu that is packed with flavor and love Speaking of love, you can’t talk about the Cafe 7 without recognizing the love that Jay Mays and Chris Kana put into their employees They expect greatness and give more than they expect As a growing restaurant group, you couldn’t have a better team leading the way
Now, how about that food? It’s not a big menu, and it shouldn’t be There is something special about a restaurant that chooses quality over quantity It is very clear that each dish was carefully crafted to create a range of options while being able to perfect each dish It’s inspiring for foodies and approachable for those less food focused I am struggling at where to start, so I guess we can talk about a Vegan dish that I would order any day of the week
The Bahn Meatballs are one of the most surprising things on the menu as you would never guess that they were Vegan The impossible meat with hot chile mayo, pickled veg, cilantro, and jalapeño create an amazing flavor that is tasty enough for meat eaters, and yet designed for our Vegetarian and Vegan friends Eatery and Cocktail office at the Union is very conscious of the dietary restrictions and choices, including some excellent salad options
I’m a meat eater through and through and Eatery delivers with some amazing options The Queso Burger with avocado poblano drizzle, pico, red chile sauce, crispy onion on an insanely good bun was a revelation Yes, the burger and the toppings were delicious, but the star of the show is the bun That is not something I am willing to admit often The bun is incredibly light and airy with a soft exterior that holds together like it was a much heavier bun The Chile Crisp Sando is one of the best chicken sandwiches in town with crispy chicken, hot chile mayo, pickles, slaw, and chile crisps You also have the option of Fries, small house salad, or Tots Choose the Tots! These perfectly cooked crunchy bites of love are the most amazing compliment to their sandwiches.
If you are looking for something a little different, I recommend the Buffalo Chicken Mac with crispy Chicken, buffalo sauce, and white cheddar queso mac. It’s what Mac and Cheese should be when it grows up. The star of the show however is the Fish& Grits made with blackened redfish, tomatoes, scallions charred lemon, and house vin
over perfectly cooked creamy grits I am a huge fan of Shrimp & Grits and this variation is an amazing treat There is a lack of good Redfish dishes around OKC and this thing makes up for it. It’s a beautiful presentation, but instead of just making it look pretty, the garnishes really do complete the dish.
Eatery and Cocktail office at the Union would not be complete without some amazing cocktails. The cocktail list is crafted to perfection, with something for everyone without overwhelming you with a five page diatribe of cocktail options. It’s also important to note that the same quality over quantity concept is conveyed in their cocktail list. I am an old fashioned fanatic and they do it right with an Elijah Craig Old fashioned that tastes amazing. The Dark and Stormy is deep and rich with Hamilton ‘86’ Rum with Ginger Beer and Lime If you prefer something a little brighter, It’s a Purple Negroni is a light yet flavorful explosion in your mouth with its purple Empress Gin, Salers Apertivo, and Dolin Blanc
The food and drinks of the Union are expertly complimented with amazing staff and a great space. The main dining area and bar give you a fresh feel with its greenery and art. The Patio is fresh and fun with all the old charms of the original restaurant and as they go, it will all be getting better along the way Not to mention the former Speakeasy that will be coming later this year, taking it back to its namesake The Cafe 7 group has a pretty good idea of how to properly do a Speakeasy and I am excited to see their ideas come to life
www.theunionokc.com 616 NW 5th St. Oklahoma City, OK 73102
Fingers crossed but it looks like we may have finally turned the corner on winter and are looking forward to an especially spry spring Why not take the opportunity to countdown some of the best places in town to take in the season? That’s right we’re planning a staycation!
The Paseo has for a long time been a great place to find not only great art but also dining and nightlife. Patrons of The Other Room are varied in taste as the bar caters to a variety of scenes. Kick back on the back patio while taking in a cocktail and conversation. What’s great is that not only are there classic drinks at The Other Room, but diners have access to delicious food too provided by Picasso Cafe next door. Order your food at the bar and your plate will be brought right to you. The Vegan Sliders are so satisfying, impossible beef and gooey cheese make these a must have!
What’s that place in the Plaza District with the ultra hashtag able rooftop terrace? That would be Up Down OKC, the super swank arcade bar where you can try out refreshing themed drinks while button mashing your favorite old school videogame. My personal favorite is of course the retro X Men arcade game. Surveying the sights of the Plaza District by taking in the view from the rooftop? Make sure to snap some great selfies in front of their green wall and neon sign while you are up there The citrusy Legend of Zelda inspired Ocarina of Lime is a zesty way to ease into spring that cannot be missed. It’s also the perfect drink for champions that live out their nostalgic hoop dreams playing NBA JAMS That’s right they’ve got that one too. Also, if you’re peckish pick up a slice of their pizzas. Feel free to chow down on the Mac & Cheese Pizza while kicking keister in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Cowabunga dude!
If you have driven down North Walker Avenue in Oklahoma City at any point you would have likely noticed the bright lights and loyal clientele of The Pump Bar The vintage gas station motif helps to make for a fun low key atmosphere. The Black Betty is a berry good drink Blackberry, lemon, and mint combine for a perfect warm weather cocktail that will have you coming back for more. Have some food to accompany your drink and check out their menu.
Few things outside of sports cause Oklahomans to throw down the gauntlet, barbeque is one of those things. Bedlam BAR-B-Q is a love letter to Oklahoma sports that is written in BBQ sauce. The Pulled Pork at Bedlam is best enjoyed on their scenic patio.
What’s that brewery with the awesome patio and fire pit? As if the exteriors and interiors of Cross Timbers Brewing Co. weren’t enough, they also boast a great selection of beer Pickles are the perfect way to pucker your pout this summer and
how better than with the Bob Dillin' beer at Cross Timbers Plus, they have the best beer to kick back with after a long day This Perfect Day.
Dining on Smoked Salmon and Pita, while spending an evening under the stars cozied up to a stylish fire is fantastic Sidecar Barley & Wine Bar at Chisholm Creek is the place where you can chill with your friends and family or have a date night with the one Volare Campus Corner has an incredible view of Norman Their deck is one of the best places to socialize. Mount Vesuvius is the best of both worlds delicious rigatoni pasta dressed with crunchy pizza crust Each of their pizzas are made with several different combinations of toppings and cheeses. The Bee Sting pizza is probably not the pizza you are used to and that’s awesome!
The Patriarch Craft Beer House & Lawn is just down the street from the University of Central Oklahoma is all about community. The fact that the bar is in a large house that is over one hundred years old adds to the family atmosphere This is a place where strangers forge lifelong friendships. A great way to make friends at The Patriarch is with mouthwatering food. Why not share some Loaded Fritters or Pork Belly Potato Skins?
A bit of Germany right in Midtown, Fassler Hall has been around for quite a while due in large part to the many regulars that patron it. You will often find friendly groups enjoying some beers and games on their awesome cement patio. It wouldn’t be a German restaurant without some succulent sausages. Up for order are classics like Bratwurst and Cheddarwurst as well as tastes more unique Totally at home in Oklahoma is the Hunter it is made up of venison, pork, and bison meat Beer is the drink of choice at Fassler Hall Of the German variety, there are Ayinger Celebrator, Schneider Eisbock, and Paulaner Oktoberfest. Fassler also makes sure to highlight some of the local beer selection as well, they carry Coop DNR and Prairie Bomb.
If you have been to Yukon recently you probably know that everyone loves talking about the Fried Deviled Eggs at The Lokal Follow those up with The Lokal Club layers of Black Forest ham, pastrami, and turkey bacon.
Grady’s 66 Pub hosts many live performances throughout the year. Co owner Grady Cross himself was an original Cross Canadian Ragweed member Good drinks go hand in hand with live music. In addition to their beer selection, mixed drinks like Grady’s STD Shot have developed their own followings
Formerly known as the Habana Inn the District Hotel is the perfect place for those twenty one and over to hang poolside going into summer. It is the watering hole to see and be seen Simply purchase a pool pass at the hotel’s front desk for $10 and join the festivities. Flashy and colorful surroundings match the exuberant swimmers and sunbathers dotted around the pool’s rim. The poolside DJ spins all the hottest up tempo hits you need while the cabana bartenders keep the drinks flowing. As a longstanding feature of Oklahoma City’s LGBT community, The District is an oasis that celebrates difference as evidenced by the vivid murals decorating the property and the dynamic programming it hosts.
Downtown Oklahoma City is home to many hidden gems Historic buildings, hidden tunnels, museums, and beautiful parks Mostly filled with businessmen and women and the casual tourist, not too many just wander the streets or business past lunch and happy hour Well that all changed in 2017 when the creative minds behind Rococo opened The Manhattan OKC. A bar hidden among the hustle and bustle of downtown. At the corner of Park and Harvy, under the watchful eye of a raven, come meet, eat, and drink. That’s the motto of The Manhattan and they live up to it. Once you enter the small space, you are welcomed and set at ease. With a relaxed atmosphere and a warm modern design, The Manhattan is a classy yet approachable spot to enjoy a great cocktail and meal. Tyler Moore, The Manhattans bar manager wants everyone to know they are welcome. The Manhattan is more than just a bar and restaurant. It’s a place where like minded individuals mix with others and challenge the construct that fine American food and cocktails are only for certain social groups. Inside you will find everyone from every walk of life, from the service industry to oil and gas, blue collar and suits, to tourists, no one is out of place.
The Manhattan is home to great food and drinks. The menu is inspired by American classics with a modern approach and seasonally inspired. They always use the freshest ingredients and make most things in house. During the lunch hours, you will find a menu full of easy and great options like sandwiches. A place to come, slow down, and enjoy a mid day break. What does the Manhattan offer that other downtown locations don’t? A great after work spot, date night, group meet up, or solo meal. Their dinner menu is a welcoming change offering everything from appetizers like their famous crab cakes to nightly specials, baked salmon, and cheesecake, something for everyone. Besides their amazing food options, The Manhattan really shines and excels in making some of the greatest cocktails in the city. With a name like The Manhattan, you’d expect exceptional classics like martinis and old fashions. While they are great, what
you need to order at least once is their namesake cocktail, the Manhattan. They stay true to the classic but add their own special touch by using rye whiskey and amaro to give it a distinctly spiced taste. Another great classic cocktail that they added their own pizzaz to is the lavender sour, their take on the popular gin sour. Their recipe uses vanilla vodka and an inhouse made lavender syrup for a sweet and refreshing change. Don’t just stop with the classics, The Manhattan is also known for their creative seasonal cocktails that they change every couple of months. The Spring cocktail menu is all about keeping you refreshed with cocktails featuring local Garden Club gin, elderflower liqueur, Earl Grey syrup, lemon, and spiced cherry bitters for the aptly named, Splash of Grey. Or my personal favorite, the creation of bar manager Tyler, the Cooler If You Did. A fun spin on a cucumber cooler and margarita featuring tequila, lime, in house made cucumber syrup, and falernum, which will have you chanting Dazed and Confused quotes all night. The Manhattan also has a great lineup of wines, whiskeys, and local beers. Come
during happy hour, 2 6, and you can enjoy some appetizers and drinks at a great price. They have domestic beers for $3, tapped cocktails, an old fashion and rococo water, their take on ranch water, for $6 as well as wine specials
In the words of Tyler, “a night out in Oklahoma City, starts at the Manhattan. Set the night for an amazing evening ” With a great spot, located next to many great offerings in the city, The Manhattan truly is the perfect starting point for your evening. As a local or a tourist, enjoy the finer things that OKC has to offer. The Manhattan is the perfect OKC place where you can count on not only a delicious meal and perfect drink but a fun and inviting atmosphere. You’ll become an instant regular and friend, with a constant smile on your face The Manhattan is open from 11 10 on weekdays and 3 11 on Saturdays They take reservations and are highly recommended on Friday and Saturday. Come say HI, relax, indulge, and enjoy yourself, under the raven.
There’s an old legend that tells a rather entertaining tale of how wine came to be. As the story goes, a Persian woman fell ill with a headache and accidentally drank from a jar used to store grapes. The woman in the story didn’t realize the grapes had fermented and, in no modest terms, got very drunk and passed out. When she woke up, her headache was gone
Despite the lack of a hangover, many women can relate to this tale. And by many women, we mean moms. This Mother’s Day is the perfect day to celebrate the mom in your life like the Persian queen she is by checking out some of the best local wine bars across the metro Here’s a look at five must try Oklahoma City metro wine bars the mom in your life is sure to love
The Hamilton Supperette and Lounge, located at 12232 N May Ave. in Oklahoma City
This hidden gem in Quail Creek shouldn’t stay hidden Located on the east side of the Shoppes at Northpark, the moment you walk in you’ll instantly feel warm and welcomed. With a speakeasy vibe and a laid back, bookish atmosphere, this is one lounge you don’t want to sleep on. Make sure to try the signature Hey Betsey, a mix of champagne, Lillet Blanc, Giffard Crème de Pamplemousse, Cappelletti, elderflower, and strawberry.
Blu Fine Wine and Foods, located at 201 S Crawford Ave in Norman
Not sure if the mom in your life would prefer a night filled with good food or good wine? Get both at Blu. Every appetizer is delicious, and you can order a good mix of food ranging from pepperoni pizza to crab cakes. For medium sized gatherings, there’s also a semi private room available by reservation and regularly scheduled wine tastings twice a month
Red Piano Lounge, located at 1 Park Ave in OKC
Aptly named for the giant red piano that occupies a corner of the lounge, the Red Piano Lounge boasts an ambiance brimming with luxury. Of course, that might come with the territory because it’s located in the historic Skirvin Hilton The Study, is located at 701 W Sheridan Ave., Suite 100 in OKC
The Study’s catchphrase says it all, “All for wine, wine for all.” One of the most welcoming and casual wine bars in the metro, you don’t have to be a connoisseur to enjoy yourself. With an impressive wine list and comfy seating, mom is sure to love the peace and quiet The Study provides. Or, if peace and quiet isn’t her thing, rent the entire space, invite 49 friends, and throw her a wine night!
The Eleanor, located at 317 NW 23rd St in Oklahoma City
If bright and bubbly describes the mom in your life, this is the place for her! Touting itself as Oklahoma’s “largest champagne lounge,” the chic atmosphere is rounded out by a rose wall, gold accents, velvet seating, and a casual “press for champagne” button at each booth. Private events are also welcome and frequently held in the Queen’s Room Need we say more?
Narrowing it down to five was tough work because wouldn’t you know it, Oklahoma City is bubbling with wonderful wine bars that would be perfect for Mother’s Day! With that in mind, we have to mention a few classics loved by locals: Waters Edge Winery, located at 2001 S Broadway in Moore; Put a Cork In It, located at 115 E California Ave in Oklahoma City; and Michael Murphy’s, located at 119 E California Ave. in Oklahoma City

In an effort to introduce more people to the interesting things going on in OKC, we want to focus on the different districts doing awesome things One of the most exciting districts right now is the Eastside District. A small area on NE 23rd street with a lot of culture and style. In many ways, it’s a community coming together to rebuild and create something fresh and exciting. The exciting part is that it’s right at the beginning of its development What started with the idea of a Grocery in a food desert area has spurred the creativity of a whole community.
The Market at Eastpoint is where it began, leading to a whole development filled with hospitality and community based businesses There really are some great concepts in the works. If you haven’t paid attention, you probably haven’t heard of the new pizza place that has everyone talking. The bar that is built around a celebration of culture, the coffee shop that is taking things to the next level with their spiked coffee creations. Eastpoint is exciting to say the least and I for one can’t wait to see where it all goes So, let’s talk about some of these spots
This spot has been the talk of the town and for good reason. Created by local music icon, and internationally known rap and hip hop artist, Jabee, Eastside Pizza House exudes culture and style in a way that only he could do. The pizza is unique with it’s black crust, something that is an intentional calling card and celebration of the heritage and culture of the area. The style of the pizza is derived from Jabee’s travels while performing around the world Flavors that are unique and the names are all attached to the history of African American’s in the area and of course his own namesake pizza The Jabee has the signature Black Crust, Pizza Sauce, Cheese, Roasted Corn Blend, Sliced Jalapenos, Goat Cheese, and finished with a Chipotle Aioli Drizzle It’s unique, flavorful and memorable. When you go in, make sure to take a moment and explore the art The walls are covered with the black men and women who fought for equality and justice. It’s an inspiration and a sobering reality that we all must take to heart
I love coffee and I love cocktails and sometimes, I want them both, in one cup This concept is the epitome of the love of spiked coffee concoctions. “Spiked. was born out of a desire to create opportunities for people of color within Northeast Oklahoma City, and also to provide connection for everyone who has a love or curiosity about coffee, cocktails, or the unique aim to mix the two together ” Owner Brittani
Hunter. The coffee is amazing and the cocktails are expertly crafted to create beautiful flavors and maybe a little buzz. The space is clean and cozy begging for an afternoon work session when you just have to get out of the office or house.
In their words, they are a Cultural gathering place with craft cocktails and comfort food in the heart of NEOKC. Expertly crafted cocktails that are unique and flavorful They had to have a lot of fun naming all the cocktails with names like 2 dope boys and a Cadillac, which is their spin on an old fashioned Tequila Mockingbird with tequila, jalapeno simple, lime, and soda. Then the Pimp by blood with rye, brown sugar simple, and orange bitters They also have a great beer selection with several local beers on tap and in cans. The menu is soulful tapas style, meant to be shared with friends, cocktails, and conversations The purpose and style of Kindred Spirits revolve around coming together and sharing common ground
As Eastpoint expands, we are excited to see what true community looks like. The love and the spirit of this cultural area is resilient and intense. It’s time we all come together in celebration of diversity and the culture that made this state and city what it is today, but more so, what it can be in the future when good people come together and step up
