Watching a movie? Quietly consume a slice of supreme. Okies on the go do pizza in their own way. People in Oklahoma are passionate about their pizza as evidenced by the large number of pizzerias in the state.

Notorious P.I.E. A Pizza Joint is keeping Norman fed with their pizza selections. Chicago versus New York style pizzas, no matter where you fall on that divide you won’t be limited to one section of the menu.

The Cured Meat Overload pizza has two things in spades meat and cheese. The tangy artichoke and balsamic mix of The Real pizza pairs perfectly with its chicken and other toppings. Not into meat?

That’s cool why not try The Screamin Vegan pizza on a Garden City crust.

Wash down your Notorious P.I.E. with some

stellar libations the Old World Old Fashioned is a must-have. Hump days means specials on punches! Whether it is the Spiced Tea, Coconut Pink Lemonade, or Sharknadocane pick one to fit your taste.

Empire Slice House has been the go-to pizza spot in the Plaza District for years now and never fails to impress. Their menu has lots of fun and delectable options. If you like some devilish heat with your pizza dive into their pepper pizza the Evil Empire. Fungus Among Us outside of having a really fun name is the spinach and mushroom collab we’ve all been waiting for.

Venn Pizza on Britton has the sports and the slices. If you are feeling restless there’s nothing better than the Nomad pizza. How can you improve on pepperoni you might be asking yourself? You fry it!

The Kiss Me on the Veranda pizza will fulfill your cravings for southwestern flavor. A pizza inspired by a taco this pie has black bean dip base with red onions and ground beef.

Pizzas from a food truck are truly one of the greatest technological achievements of our time. The Saucee Sicilian specializes in mouthwatering meatballs and flavor-packed Neapolitan-style pizzas. Not many mobile eateries offer classic dishes like focaccia bread.

Scale the pesto layered Mt. Etna pizza. The pesto is topped with olive oil and pungent garlic. If you are a committed carnivore, you will for sure love the Ragusa decorated with soppressata, pepperoni, sausage, and meatballs.

Papa Angelo's Pizzeria’s New York-style pizzas are covered in toppings so that every bite whether the first or the last has equal taste. Garlic knots and pasta are also exceptional at Papa Angelo’s. Who doesn’t love stuffed shells or perfectly prepared baked Ziti?

How to make anything instantly delicious you ask? Drizzle on some truffle honey. The Quinn’s Burrata at Hall's Pizza Kitchen is one of many great ways to start your dining experience. The Samwise pizza at Hall’s brings together pizza and the MVP veggie the potato to spectacular results. It has both mozzarella and Parmigiano Reggiano.

If you are the rebellious type and like pineapple on your pizza, then give Hall’s Sweetness pizza a try. Plus, if you’re not sure if you want pizza or pasta Hall’s has you covered there too. The Lasagna pizza puts a fresh spin on a dish we all know and love, you have gotta try that ricotta.

Halls doesn’t just have pies they have cake too! The Hall’s Strawberry Shortcake with fresh strawberries and citrus tones is a cool summer sweet. Don’t forget their brunch with an assortment of bagel options.

It is always a good time for pizza. These pizzerias are where you can find new favorites and rediscover those special combinations. You should have a slice in hand at this point so I will let you enjoy it.

Oklahoma Axe Factory AN AXE A DAY OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT

I have always wanted to be a world champion at something. Turns out I don’t run very fast, I am not strong enough to beat Sylvester Stalone at arm wrestling and I really don’t like getting punched in the face, so the UFC is out. The good news is that my dreams are not completely dead, I can throw an axe.

That thing my friends and I did to kill time as a kid has finally been made into a real sport with real championships. In Oklahoma, you can get your axe throwing in at the Oklahoma Axe Factory in Norman.

There is something therapeutic about throwing an axe. It allows for an Endorphin release that relieves your stress and just makes you feel better. Had a bad day at work? Throw an axe. Have relationship issues? Throw an axe. Car trouble?

Talk to a mechanic, then throw an axe. It’s the perfect activity. Whether you want to just blow off some steam, just need a way to calm your focus, STATE or want bond with the & to LOCAL guys/girls, this is the sport. It’s also important to note that while other places give you an axe and tell you good luck, Oklahoma Axe Factory coaches you through the various throwing styles and how to accurately get your axe to stick.

It’s fun hanging out with people that love their job, and these people are true axe throwing fans. Not only are they pleasant to work with, but they are also good at what they do. I was surprised to find out that the team members at OK AF, (yes that’s their abbreviation and it’s awesome) each has their own named axes. I met Black Beauty, honey badger and a few others. If you decide that you want to take your axe throwing to the next level, you can join the axe throwing leagues that meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays through the WATL, World Axe Throwing League. In fact last year, OK AF sent a pair of competitors to the World Axe Throwing Championship.

Oklahoma Axe Factory was among the many businesses that planned on opening in March of 2020, you know, the month the world came screeching to an abrupt stop. Lucky for us, OK AF was able to keep the dream alive and was finally able to open its doors in November of 2020 with a few precautions. When they say they are OK AF, they mean it in more ways than one. Everything they sell in house is made in Oklahoma, including their craft beer. As a craft beer fan, I fully approve this craft beer selection. Being in Norman, it’s 8

clear that they have a great relationship with 405 Brewery.

If it comes in a can from 405, OK AF has it. Don’t worry, they do have a limit on the amount of beer you can drink while throwing axes.

So, needless to say, I highly recommend spending some time at OK AF. If you are going on the weekend, be sure to make reservations beforehand. Also, don’t miss out on Wednesday Happy Hour half-price from 4pm to 7pm. When you go, tell them we said hi and get your axe throwing on.

Water's Edge Winery

WHEN CLOSING ISN'T AN OPTION

Just 6 years ago, Mara English and her husband Mike went out for her birthday and found themselves walking in automobile alley. Coming across Waters Edge Winery they decided to pop in and immediately fell in love. That night they were introduced to Connor, the current owner and they just fell in love. Before they knew it they were spending their Sundays there hanging out and doing a little work for the next week. Conner would talk and she would do her work as they all hung out and drank wine.

On April 1st of last year, Mara received an email that said that her beloved winery was closing. It took some arm twisting but Mara was able to convince her husband and Connor to move Waters Edge Winery to Moore. As soon as she had them both on board she went to work getting city permits and in a matter of a few months, they were up and running by December 8th at their Moore location.

Walking into Waters Edge Winery's new location, you feel a welcoming vibe and hospitality like none other. Mara wants everyone to feel comfortable and relaxed. She explains, “ If you go into a situation and you’re upset and cranky you are going to have a cranky time”... well no chance of that here.

Not only will you find amazing wine at Waters Edge, but they also have incredible food that is made in-house. You definitely need to check out their new street tacos and flatbread pizzas!

Not only are we dog lovers, but our patio has been home to many cats, rabbits, monkeys, a couple of kangaroos, and even a pony.

Ask anyone in the urban core of Oklahoma City where the friendliest dog-centric patio is, and likely you’ll hear The Pump come up over and over. With its expansive outdoor patio and funky, locals-only vibe, seeing a pup or two (or five or six) is not uncommon, and there’s a reason why The Pump is one of Oklahoma City’s favorite dog-friendly places.

Even as you enter the patio, the doorman who checks IDs has a jar of doggie treats on hand to welcome furry patrons, but the extensive selection of craft beer and cocktails certainly keeps the human patrons happy and returning to soak up the Oklahoma sunshine and socialize.

The Pump Bar, which opened in 2014, is built in one of OKC’s historic old, abandoned buildings, making it the ultimate renovation project. Originally built in 1929 as a gas station nicknamed "Elmer's Texaco," it was a thriving business for years until it closed in 1978. Ian and Hailey McDermid were both veterans of the Oklahoma City bar and restaurant scene, and in 2012, they left their jobs to set out and create their own hangout.

“The Pump opened December 16, 2014, by Hailey and Ian McDermid, who are dog lovers and owners of Chewy and Fizz, their Shih Tzu dogs,” said Karah Good, bartender and general manager.

“Not only are we dog lovers, but our patio has been home to many cats, rabbits, monkeys, a couple of kangaroos, and even a pony.”

The Pump Bar’s sign, created to mirror the building’s original banjo-style sign. Is one of the most recognizable aspects of the bar, The sign was discovered by McDermid, who bought the memorabilia from a collector.

After having the neon sign designed for The Pump, the McDermid's added outdoor and indoor seating to the massive patio, which allows for some stellar peoplewatching and dog-friendly fun.

“We usually carry dog treats at the front gates, or you can special order a beef patty for $3 or an order of tater tots to share for $6,” said Good. “We offer dog bowls at our three water stations, not only for pups but their owners too.”

In addition to the patio space, The Pump also has a 1,250square-foot back building with bathrooms and an area on the north side that has outdoor games like bean bag toss. The south side has a quieter spot for those guests who want to chat or have a quieter conversation.

“The Pump is a melting pot meant for anyone and everyone over the age of 21,” Good said. “Oklahoma has some of the best weather to come sit on our patio like it’s your own. Prop your feet up, meet a new friend, have an brewokc.com

ice-cold beverage, and relax.”

If you’re taking your furry friend out for a drink and some patio time, try The Pump’s Black Betty, a gin-based drink with a blend of lemon, min, and blackberry topped with grapefruit soda.

If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, ask for the Dirty Harry, a new drink made daily by any staff member, which allows The Pump’s bartenders to create a different cocktail in addition to the regular everyday menu.

“We just ask people to be responsible and respectful, not only for themselves and their animals, but everyone around them as well,” Good said.

by Kari Huskey and James Frazier This road trip is a little different, in essence, it’s a road trip inside a road trip, because why not. We started off in a little Airbnb overlooking Arbuckle lake. We checked out a few things that the Davis and Sulphur area had to offer. We then decided to swing down through Tishomingo, a surprisingly well-stocked town. Then since we were there, we thought, why not hit a brewery in Durant. The drive was majestic and we would gladly hit this road trip again.

Arbuckle Mountains If you're looking for a great weekend getaway spot in Oklahoma, look no further than the Arbuckle Mountain area! This hidden gem is home to some of the best scenery and attractions that the state has to offer.

Whether you're interested in hiking, fishing, or just taking in the natural beauty of the area, Arbuckle Mountain is sure to please. Let's take a closer look at some of the best things to see and do in this wonderful part of Oklahoma!

Should you choose to stay in the area, you can find a lot of great little hidden gems. Including the cabins available through Arbuckle Outfitters from Oklahoma City native and Pizza aficionado Sheli Reynolds Stenseth, one of the famed Stone Sisters. The views and relaxing atmosphere make this the perfect weekend escape. Get away to the woods, light up the grill, or hit the lake, it’s all relaxing to another level. While you are there, hit a few spots in town that have some awesome small-town charm and delicious flavors.

Smokin’ Joe’s Rib Ranch is just on the outskirts of Davis and is home to some of the best BBQ in Oklahoma. Smokin’ Joe’s started out as a hobby and then word got out. Eight years ago, they decided it was time to expand. The new location is something to see, Trailer park, lot’s of wide open space, and plenty of seating, not to mention the landing strip out back. If you come on a weekend, you should definitely get the worldfamous smoked Ribeyes. Yes, just as good as it sounds. If you don’t make it on a weekend, don’t worry, the ribs and brisket are amongst the best in Oklahoma.

Rusty Nails Winery The year is 2010 and the little town of Sulpher was missing something.

Debbie Alexander knew what it was, the town needed a winery and she decided to answer the call. Stepping into Rusty Nails Winery is a treat.

Not only is the wine delicious, you can spend hours just shopping through all the products throughout the store. From cute and clever signs for your walls to tasty and snarky teas, and everything in between. If you show up on a Wednesday night, you can experience Wine Wednesdays where they give everyone their choice of a wine tasting or a free glass of wine. The music flows on Fridays with live music every Friday night. You can also take advantage of their painting classes monthly or even for a special event. To say that this place was a great addition to the Downtown Sulphur area is an understatement.

The wine is fantastic, with all the varietals that you would expect with some great local flair mixed in. If you are not big on wine, but got dragged in by your wife/husband/friend, they have drinks for you too. You can get a glass of beer, or a Wine-a-rita.

They also have some delicious foods including a fantastic Charcuterie plate, or some other small plate items that are sure to please. The Rusty Nail Winery is an experience in itself and we highly recommend it.

Tishomingo Oklahoma Tishomingo is an oasis to every traveler. At the crossroads of Highways, 377 and 78 Tishomingo offers a plethora of options for visitors to enjoy a hot summer's day. From the beaten path, and swimming holes to live music you simply cannot go wrong making a stop in this town.

Among the sites, you will find the Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge which was established in 1946 that contains hiking trails, hunting, and fishing opportunities all day long. It is open only during daylight hours except for night fishing as well as campsites.

Johnston County War Memorial is an honored series of granite markers that honor those that made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom. There is a restored Blue Angel flight demonstration jet onsite that was flown by Navy Lt. Commander Clarence O.” Smokey” Tolbert, listed MIA in Vietnam in 1972. This Memorial is amazing and is breathtaking day or night.

In the mood for some vino? Make sure and check out The Old Silo Winery which is just a hop and skip from the scenic Blue River and the Tishomingo Wildlife Refuge. This Amish-crafted micro winery offers an enjoyable wine tasting experience in a laid-back and relaxed atmosphere.

Creek Park is no exception to the rule. With 15 spectacular acres next to the soft rolling waters of Pennington Creek, RV hookups, tent camping sites, and a clear water swimming hole you will be in camping heaven.

Ole Red located in downtown Tishomingo offers the ultimate in musical talent 7 days a week. Opened by Country Music Superstar, Blake Shelton, in 2017, Ole Red not only has amazing food and an electric atmosphere it also has a Nashville feel that will make you think you are transported to Tennessee. If you are lucky, you may accidentally run into a famous musician or two.

Durant Since you are in this part of the state, you might as well drop down to Lost Street Brewing Company in Durant. This place is the model of what a brewery and taproom should be. It’s beautiful with wide open spaces, with the brewery section open for everyone to see.

The Dewald family runs this energetic space and when you spend a few minutes there, you feel like you have been adopted. I guess that’s what happens when you start your journey with a family Christmas present of a DIY home craft beer kit. Be sure to say hello to the family dogs that are always up for a picture. The beer is just as great as the family. It’s crisp and clean and comes in a variety of styles.

Let’s talk about some of the beers. Lost Street focuses on making smooth drinkable beers. The IPAs are more focused on hop and flavor profiles over bitterness. This makes for a great drinking experience. I personally love the Stoneykirk which is a Scottish ale that is a malt forward beer with a caramel backbone. The family history dates back to Stoneykirk, Scotland Around the year 1211. This is their way to pay tribute to their ancestors with this classic style scottish ale. Slàinte Mhath! Cheers! Reading through their menu is like sitting down with grandpa for storytime. Such as the Instigator, their classic pilsner lager which is perfect for the summer heat, it is clean and refreshing with a malty flavor. "Gator" -” the call sign of a local hero and family member, Brady Rudolf. When you drink this remember the crew of Red River 44 and as always - remember freedom is not free!”

When you come in, spend some time, check out the awesome products, the beer, the craft soda coolers and ask some questions.

Equity Brewing

What if beer is more than just beer? by

What if beer is more than just beer? What if it means community, diversity, activism, and support? More than just something that you drink but something that brings people together for the greater good. That’s where Equity Brewing comes in.

Suzette, a professor of political science, has traveled all over the world. Interacting with different cultures, trying new beers, and seeing how the two-affect community. Her love of beer started at a young age with her German Grandfather teaching her all about traditions and German beers. She learned fast and early how beer can bring people together. After years of loving beer and teaching, she knew she wanted to do more, to start a change in the beer industry. After being an avid beer drinker and sometimes homebrewer, she made the leap of faith in 2019 to start Equity Brewing. She noticed that there was a lack of women in the craft brew industry, especially in an all-women-run brewery. The mission has always been the same: to create an equitable space supporting diversity, and inclusion, promote a welcoming, supportive and safe place, and be a platform for social justice and positive change. Big boots for anyone to fill, however, Suzette isn’t just anyone and she isn’t the only one. She has fostered a place for women entrepreneurs to establish themselves and thrive. Her go-to partner and leading woman is her daughter, Hannah. Like her mother, Hannah has a spirit and passion to help others and foster a collaborative community. Together they run the Equity taproom, brew the beers, run all social media and maintain the bookshop.

As soon as you enter the small taproom you enter a space full of not just light but brightness. White walls with a blast of calming yet bright colors and artwork adore the walls. In the center of the room is where the magic happens, the bar. They have 23 taps with every beer style you can imagine and some you had no idea you would love. Equity knew that they always wanted to have a variety of beer options with a wide range to allow people to try and learn new beer styles. Their approach is more about drinkability with most beers coming between 4-6.5 ABV to allow patrons to drink and appreciate more. Nothing over complicated, more approachable. The first beer Equity brewed was their Solidary Saison. A farmhouse-style beer that is typically brewed seasonally in France. Saisons background belongs to the workers 16

of the world and Equity brewed it with pro-labor in mind. To bring attention to the people who work hard to grow the products that produce the beer they brew and we all drink. This is the general theme with Equity beers. The second beer they brewed was a Collective Action Kolsch as a nod to her German Grandfather who helped inspire her to brew in the first place. Since opening Equity has partnered with various nonprofits to raise funds and awareness for local issues with their Taps for Humanity. In the words of Equity’s brewers, “Equity Brewing Company was established with the passion to not only create and share a beer that tastes great, but that promotes positive social change. We want to welcome everyone to the craft beer table and inspire a more diverse community of beer lovers. We also want to highlight and amplify important social issues in our society and contribute to a more equitable world.”

Equity knew that they didn’t want to stop at just beer. They wanted to establish a place for other community members to succeed too and create a more sustainable future. So, they created Equity Union. Not only is it a mother and daughter run

business, they wanted to feature other women-run businesses.

Inside the brewery, they welcomed Legally Brewed in 2021. Legally, just like Equity, share a common mission, equity, and social justice for all and happen to make amazing beers as well. They currently have 7 taps and share and brew in the same space as Equity. Equity Unions also hosts chef Barbie Robertson who uses Equity beer in all her recipes. Brooke Roude of Forge and Gather provides charcuterie for the taproom guests. Next door to the brewery Bright Vibe Coffee will open up with a full bakery and coffee menu. Along with all the food and drinks you could want, Equity Brewing's owner, Hannah, has also curated a small but mighty bookstore, Juste Books located in their attached taproom space. Its main features are from local, women, international, LQBTQ+, cultural, and social justice books.

Covering both fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and children's novels. All are meant to inspire and uplift the readers. Juste Books also created a Book and Brew book club featuring books from the bookstore and beers brewed to match. In all, Equity Union will be able to host 7-8 different women-focused businesses. All working together to inspire and lift each other up to succeed. Equity Union also understood that they alone can’t represent and speak for everyone. They created Equity Trust which includes 17 community collaborators with various backgrounds to help guide the space. They are there to help facilitate cohesive self-awareness and representation and set an example for others to lead with better and more equitable business practices.

Equity Brewing, Union, and Trust have a bright future ahead.

With the expansion, they are also celebrating their one-year anniversary on July 2nd with a big party! They will celebrate the grand opening of The Equity Union during the anniversary party! That weekend - July 1 & 2 - will also feature our collaboration with Sunny Dayz Mural Fest and the re-release of the very popular Sunny Dayz IPA. Along with the unveiling of new murals that will be painted in The Equity Union space.

So, what happens when beer is more than just beer? Amazing things, that’s what. A brewery that focuses on great beers but also on brewing change. Creating a place to be a social impact company that is community-focused. With the hope that guests can enjoy Equity products and the Equity space while also feeling good about contributing to positive change in the community. THE METAMORPHOSIS OF ROCKY KANAGA

If you have been in the Oklahoma City area for any time at all, you have undoubtedly heard the name Rocky Kanaga. With his mellow radiant voice and laid-back demeanor, he has blazed an impressive musical trail through this area for 20 years.

As with any great story, Rocky’s began when he was 13 after he bought a snare drum at a neighborhood garage sale. He used white 5-gallon buckets as his toms and what he described as “a little wire thing as his symbol putting it on a caulking gun” and that was his drum set. Seeing how much he loved playing, his parents surprised him one Christmas with a trap set, and the inevitable musical road was laid out in front of him.

Before long, he was playing with his friends Blake Lennon and Josh Christian in one of their parents’ garages. The trio belted out Nirvana, Offspring and Metallica and rocked the pants off anyone in the garage listening to them! Rocky remembers “It was the best time in my life musically speaking.” They were just playing in the garage, but to them they were some badass rockstars!

Around the age of 22, Rocky went to his first Dave Matthews concert. He went there as a drummer and then after seeing Dave play, he was like “forget the drums… I want to learn the guitar!” He loved Dave Matthews message…his songs are a lot about dying, but in the meantime, you should eat, drink and be merry because you are not promised tomorrow. This is when Rocky realized that songs can be sad and still be an uplifting force.

After the concert, Rocky went to the store and bought a VHS tape (yes, VHS lol) of Dave Matthews playing live. He would slow it down and watch Dave’s fingers and would count the frets. Basically, Dave Matthews taught him how to play and it is and there is no doubt that if you ask for any Dave Matthews song, Rocky can play it! And rather well too!

Over the years as Rocky made his way playing gigs around the Oklahoma City and Norman area, he found himself falling victim to the party atmosphere in which musicians can be deeply rooted. Rocky has now been sober for 3 years and admits that when he watches Facebook memories of his 18

shows, he is horrified to see how he was playing when he was drinking. He tried to stop but he was to the point that his withdrawals were horrific. The first thing that he had to do in the morning to feel better was to take a drink because his hands were shaking so badly. “It got to the point where I was hearing evil voices, like they were telling me, you know how to end your life. Just go…you know where the guns are and whatever.”

Rocky recalls, “I was at my parents’ house, and they didn’t know what was wrong. I was talking crazy; I was seeing and hearing things. It was real to me but no one else could see it.” That is when his mom took him to the emergency room.

“I remember I was shaking and hearing voices. I stood up and tried to calm myself down and that is the last thing I remember. I just fell face first and like, had a huge blackout and woke up in the ICU four or five days later.” Doctors would come in and out every day and ask him to hold his hand up to see how bad the shaking was. “This one nurse or doctor, I don’t know if she was going to school or what, one day came back in and asked if I was going to stop drinking. I said I don’t know if I want to… She looked at me in the eyes and said you are going to die, she was like, your body can’t take one more of these withdrawals and you are going to die. So, I was like do I want to live or die? I looked at her and said I want to live. I wish I could go back and find her after all these years to say thank you for saving my life.”

All things are looking bright now for Rocky, and he is not

ashamed of his story, on the contrary, if it helps even one person, then he believes it is totally worth telling.

So, what does the future hold for Mr. Kanaga? He just finished his first solo album, appropriately named Metamorphosis with Steve Boaz, who according to Rocky, is a musical genius and owns Breathing Rhythm Studios in Norman. Metamorphosis will drop later this year and Rocky already has songs percolating for another album.

When asked about the inspiration behind the album Rocky quickly responded “It is about change… how I changed. It is about the past and where I am headed in the future.

There are songs on there that are sad but only because I know what they are about, but they all have a message of hope.” He gave The Brew a sneak peak, or shall we say listen, and we can definitely say that you will not be disappointed. You will find every type of musical influence and lyrics that were purged from Rocky’s heart.

Rocky Kanaga’s future is definitely bright. He is loving life, writing music, and fighting the good fight. His plan is to keep playing shows, maybe a tour, continue healing and taking care of himself through music.

Where history and glamour meet and have a cocktail

Oklahoma City is full of history, charm, and tradition. Neighborhoods, buildings, and businesses have been around for over 100 years leaving their personal stamp on the City's pages. With a history so vast sometimes it's easy to forget just how lucky we Oklahomans are. As time goes on sometimes a new chapter in OKC history is written and the old chapters are left behind, but not forgotten. Oklahoma City has welcomed a new era of growth, bringing new business to the state.

However, with all of the new buildings, one building has always been a stand-out, The First National Building. The iconic 32-floor building stands proudly in downtown OKC. Its peak adds to the now infamous Oklahoma City skyline.

While you might be aware of the building, you may not be aware of its storied past. In 1931, The Johnson Brothers purchased the land and together they designed and fully built the gorgeous building in just 11 months. The First National Bank was opened in 1931. The Johnson Brothers spared no detail and created one of the most opulent and grandeur buildings. After the fall of the bank in the mid-80s, the building was left mostly in disrepair and was occupied by local government offices. After years of neglect, in 2015, the building was purchased by Gary Brooks with the intention to open this space as we see it today.

Mr. Brooks knew about the history of the building and honored it.

After years of meticulous rehab, The First National Center reopened its doors in 2022. Just like before the building and space spare no details. Upon stepping through the doors, it's like stepping back in time. One of elegance, old-world charm, and luxury. You can’t help but feel the electric energy. Upon entering make your way up the grand staircase to the main lobby where you will be blown away by The Great Hall. The space is the old lobby from the bank. Mr. Brooks honored the bank's history and feel and lovingly resorted the space to its art deco past. The floors are the original Italian marble, chosen for its softness to allow for women's heels to be silent. So soft in fact there are still spots located around the space that have indents from years of walk and standing. Just another fun fact about the building that makes it so unique. They also kept the artwork and painting the same as well as four 1931 murals by Edgar Spier Cameron reflecting the state's history, including the Louisiana Transfer, Sunset Trail, and Oklahoma Land Run. In the center of the room is The Great Hall’s bar.

Open all day from coffee to cocktails, The Great Hall is essentially the living room or gathering space for The First National guests and visitors. You can grab a drink, sit on one of the many cozy chairs or 20

couches, meet friends old and new, and have a grand time. The Great Hall is evocative of Europe’s majestic all-day bars. The grandeur of this architectural masterpiece is the perfect setting to enjoy craft European cocktails such as Italian Aperitivos and Spanish Gintonicos complemented by antipasti and Neapolitan pizzas from Tellers.

After enjoying a relaxing cocktail from The Great Hall it's time to make your way to Tellers, the aptly named Italian restaurant located in as you can guess, the old bank tellers' space. Chief culinary officer Jonathan Benno along with Chef Spencer Arthur and hospitality company Apicii, are behind the hotel's restaurants, as well as another pair of offerings inside the 1.1 million-squarefoot First National Center. Teller’s menu is a thoughtful yet classic Italian food starting their wood-fired oven. Chef Arthur wants to feature local, seasonal, and great fresh produce. They have everything from handmade pizzas and pasta to crisp salads and a steak that will forever change your life. Paired with their iconic blood orange spritz you will feel like you're dining in an old-world Italian villa.

Down a set of stairs leads you to The Vault and Library of Distilled Spirits, a grand speakeasy-style bar in the building's basement. Behind the original bank vault doors and steel walls, they will have 1,500 spirits that are documented in an encyclopedia, as well as more than 200 craft cocktails. The Vault will be the answer to OKC's long-awaited speakeasy big city vibe bars. A place to see and be seen. A great spot for a night out with a relaxing vibe, easy music, comfortable seating, and a mystique that can’t be ignored. Along with some of the best drinks in the state, The Vault will also have light Mexicanstyle bites. Then, in July, Stock & Bond steakhouse will debut, honoring the High Plains agriculture legacy, along with an impressive selection of whiskeys.

The First National Building has also opened up The First Residency and The National both high-end luxury apartments and hotels. On the first floor, The First National is also creating a one-stop shop for everything that you would want or need, highlighting some of the best that Oklahoma City has to offer.

In their retail spaces, OKC’s very own Plenty Mercantile will be opening its doors and selling its curated Oklahoma-made good. There will also be a nail salon, a Dry Bar, and a barbershop. However, this being The First National, it isn’t just any barbershop. It’s the original barbershop that moved down from its 14th-floor home. In fact, it’s the very barbershop where Mr. Edward Gaylord, an important name in Oklahoma history, was known to take his morning meetings. It is a special piece of Oklahoma's history that you too can be a part of. The First National also has a grand ballroom and smaller event spaces that can be rented out and used for the perfect retro-inspired wedding, party, or event.

You open a brewery of course! And that is exactly what Chris & Laura Kochendorfer and Lenny & Kathryn Cripps set out to do.

Chris started making his own beer in 2010 and over time his passion only grew stronger. They say timing is everything, and the timing couldn’t have been any better when they met the Cripps. Lenny’s lifelong dedication for craft beer began over 30 years ago when he and Kathryn were stationed in Germany.

Once back in the United States, Lenny began to miss the beer he had so grown to love and decided that if he were going to have the quality of beer, he had grown accustomed to there, he would have to learn to brew it himself. Having met the Cripps, the Kochendorfers just knew they would be fantastic partners for a joint venture. Keven Costner taught us all that if you build it, they will come….and in this case, it is absolutely true.

Just a short drive down McCurdy Road and built on an amazing piece of land between Marlow and Duncan, you will find the Kockendorfers and Cripps doing what they do best. When you first walk into the brewery there is a laid-back and welcoming vibe. You are taken back by the beauty of all the custom woodwork tables and the one-of-a-kind beautifully crafted wooden bar top. Seriously, it is so smooth and shiny you can literally see your reflection. But wait, there’s more…they have pinball… yes, I said pinball!

Once you make your way through the tap room to the fantastic patio outside, you will be greeted with rows of tables, a big screen tv for watching the big game, a mobile bar, a walking path, and an area for the kiddos to play. You can relax by one of their firepits, play a game of cornhole or if you want to re-live your grade school recess days, challenge your friends to a heated game of tetherball! And according to Laura Kochendorfer, “We are always looking for new ways to add to

our customers’ experience when they visit the brewery.

Currently, we are working on plans to create a separate event space for large parties, add to our playground area, and potentially build a dog park.”

By now you are probably thinking beer…what about the beer? Well, Kochendorfers definitely WILL NOT disappoint there. Beer is their business, and they offer an array of craft beer and even the pickiest beer drinker will be able to find one or two that they like. Kochendorfer focuses on making drinkable beer. Some may not understand that statement as they like when you have to choke a beer down because it’s either too bitter, too stout, or just too funky. That’s not this style, they believe beer should be enjoyed. From their Cream Ale to the Imperial Stout, you have incredible flavor without all the weird faces trying to figure out what you think about it.

They have a Stout that comes in at 3.8% which would go perfectly with Sausage and Eggs or potato pancakes.

That’s a great way to start a day. With the name, you would assume and would be correct that they make a great Hefeweizen. Their Dunkelweizen isn’t too shabby and goes on our would-drink anytime list. Recently, they decided to play with ingredients a bit for a good cause and created a one-of-a-kind Sour Wheat that has a lemony, citrusy tartness that makes it incredibly refreshing. The can design was part of a Collaboration with Autism Oklahoma and looks amazing. This label has been so popular that plan to collaborate with them for a series of sour styles.

Each beer has its own story tying it to a fantastical tale that takes you to unseen and faraway places, puts you through twists and turns, and then brings you to Oklahoma. Their Irish Red Ale tells the tale of Red, a fiery red-haired maiden with a temperament to match kicking some major booty in the 1800s. The Imperial Stout tells us how Viktor, an animal-loving gentle soul that was born in the 1800s in Russia and found himself on a journey with the circus. It is always fascinating to learn about the Inspiration behind the beers and this story is both amazing and inspiring. Chris told us, “After meeting Lenny in 2010, we discovered we both had similar tastes in styles of beer. In the ’80s and ’90s, Lenny immersed himself in the craft beer scene and spent time around the U.S. and Europe experiencing styles from all over. Likewise, I traveled extensively across the U.S. and Europe in the last decade, which expanded my awareness that beer could be so much more than some of the big domestic brands I’d become accustomed to. Lenny and I were both drawn to the traditional styles, which is why we focus so much of our lineup on them. That’s not to say that we won’t create a beer that deviates from the original styles or add a few adjuncts, but when we do, we like to go on the subtle side of flavor additions. If you look at our core beers, Cream

ale, Irish Red, Hefeweizen, American Pale Ale, India Pale Ale, and Imperial Chocolate Stout, we are providing an array of traditional styles, with the goal of educating our community on craft beer. For many, we were their first introduction to what craft beer could be and have made it easy to find a beer that fits their pallet.”

When asked about the story behind their brand we learned that Kochendorfer’s Brewery is a reflection of their combined personalities and passion for people from all walks of life, their community, and craft beer. “It represents the playfulness of the founders, the passion of the brewers, and the love of storytelling.” And we would say that they absolutely hit the mark.

Welcome back everyone and Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there. I lost my father four years ago and it is still tough, so make sure to take the time to tell your fathers you love them because tomorrow is never guaranteed. All right, now a little glass of Don Julio 1942 to push the emotions back down, and let’s get to this month's recipe, my SpinArt Phyllo Cups. A great hors d'oeuvre that's quick and easy and will have your guests thinking you're a chef. Now if you want to pair it with a wine I suggest a nice Sauvignon Blanc, but you know me, I’ll stick to the Don Julio. I did, however, get to try some of the Tesla Tequila, at a close friends, Natalie and Greg, bar Sudi’s in the Virgin Islands. It was delicious, peppery with a slight burn. Great for how I like my tequila, to sip on with a little ice, I still prefer the 1942 over anything else, now let’s dive right into this month’s recipe and a tequila or 2.

First, start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and place the phyllo shells on a baking sheet. In a medium bowl combine all the ingredients except for the parmesan cheese, and make sure everything is mixed in well.

Really easy so far, right? Then spoon in the artichoke dip into the phyllo cups and sprinkle the parmesan cheese on top.

Now bake in the oven until lightly browned and the cheeses are melted for about 15 minutes. Remove and serve warm.

This is one of my favorite hors d'oeuvres to make because it's rich, creamy, and crispy all together and keeps you coming back for “one more,” I hope you enjoy this recipe, now it’s back to the Don J for me.

Oklahoma Beer: A Hand Crafted history

“It’s A Drink Of The People”: Welzbacher On His Book

Liquidly foamy gold, or beer as it is almost commonly referred to has been around since the inauguration of alcohol itself. Causing history to be enriched because of it.

Brian Welzbacher proudly depicts himself as a beer enthusiast who recently published his first book called “Oklahoma Beer: A Hand Crafted history”, that deals through the turbulence of prohibition and explains the movements that has led to current laws and regulations of alcohol that we all know of, but his five-year journey was little less than easy to traverse.

“The personal fear of I don’t know what I’m doing or why am I doing this”, lurked behind Welzbachers head.

However, when it comes to the art of alcohol, Welzbacher is no stranger to it. His passion for alcohol has led him to gain valuable insight which has formed into a tributary of success.

“I have the tools, I have the content, I can do this”, confidently claimed Welzbacher as he took the mantel to write the extensive book Ranging from his company BeerisOk.com where he designs a variety of alcohol theme wearable pieces, to his blog Oklahomacraftbeer.com in which he discusses in detail about the industry and now a local published author.

Welzbacher had the credentials to be successful.

“You know working on some stories with the brew pubs and you know having some general knowledge but getting the back stories and things like that was fascinating and even talking to the people that are still there today for some of them is really cool- I mean it is pretty neat showing that it has its own unique history to people”, observed Welzbacher during his visits to local breweries.

Regardless of the outcome, Welzbacher strongly believes that alcohol is more than a simple drink. “It's not about getting drunk, it's just about enjoying your time out with people; it doesn't matter what it is, but you know it's pretty nice, you try not to give it such a bad rap like it used to have” He goes on to further say “It’s always been around celebrating everything from birth to death- it’s a drink of the people”.

CHICKEN SHACK

The only thing better than the chicken, is the atmosphere

Many years ago, dining out with the family was reserved only for special occasions. Fast forward to today where it’s common to eat meals outside the home any day of the week.

Several things set apart different restaurants from one another, predominantly menu, decor, service, and ambiance. The Chicken Shack on old Route 66 in Luther has all of those things making it an especially unique place.

When you think of the term “shack” the location definitely lives up to its lighthearted moniker. By definition, a shack is a roughly built building, for the sake of this article I prefer to describe it more as simple, rustic, and uncomplicated. Once your order is placed at the little outside window, you’re given a number in order for the staff to be able to bring you your order.

As you pull open the screen door to walk in, you will immediately notice the ground is gravel. Don’t wear your best footwear here because you’re bound to leave a little dusty. This place is popular so keep in mind it is typically more crowded on weekends than if your travel out on a weeknight.

The layout of the dining room is one gigantic “L” shape. As you proceed further inside from the entrance there are tables and booths on both sides is the aisle. Keep walking and you’ll come across the inside stage where live music is performed for guests.

Immediately turn to your left is additional tables and at the very back is the full-service bar.

That’s not where the fun ends. The “backyard” as it is affectionately called is full of picnic tables, and lawn games such as cornhole and there are fire pits for sitting around after the sun goes down. This is one of the favorite spots for kids to run around and enjoy meeting new friends.

The Chicken Shack currently sits right on the banks of the Deep Fork River which can make the outdoor space a little sloppy when the good ol’ Oklahoma rain seems like it will never cease. The outside area has a larger music stage and a I appreciate well behaved dogs are welcome to dine with their owners.

The real reason people return time and time again is of course for the chicken! Their broasting technique is phenomenal keeping the chicken moist all the way through with the outside remaining nicely crisped. I personally think it’s better because it’s not greasy like other fried chicken methods I’ve experienced.

Families tend to order the whole chicken to share among their group, whereas I as a solo diner once I discovered their Chicken Sammich it has been my fail-safe go-to meal. They have several sides to choose from such as okra and Mac N Cheese, but my favorite to pair with it is the onion rings. So delicious!

I have tried the pork chops which are amazing, and, on another occasion, I picked brisket on a loaded baked potato. When you first arrive check their menu board out front where they list daily specials. The Chicken Shack frequently has limited-time-only items like prime rib and crawfish boils.

Wingfest has become one of their much-anticipated events so follow their Facebook page to keep up to date on all their special happenings.

The Shack seems to be busting at the seams. It is in the works to soon move into a bigger location across from the Arcadia Round Barn. Staying true to their original roots concept by remaining on historic Route 66, there are plans for the same extraordinary food, more stages to continue to showcase local musical talent, and a better children’s playground. The new location has the promise to be a larger venue with better indoor seating space with room to keep growing in the future.

Until the Arcadia location opens patrons can continue to visit the Luther location or go check out the recent addition to the Shack Family, the Lumber Shack in Harrah. Built inside the former lumber yard, the Lumber Shack menu is similar to the Chicken Shack as you can still order the same great broasted chicken, but in Harrah, you are able to order a juicy hamburger.

Unfortunately, at this time the onion rings did not make the list of side options at the Lumber Shack. The potato wedges suffice nicely to compliment the burger.

The Lumber Shack is part of the original Sweeney Switch District. Before the town was named Harrah, it was known as Sweeney from 1896 to 1899 after E.W. Sweeney who settled in the area and operated a ferry across the nearby North Canadian River. The Lumber Shack has a comfortable, rustic charm that makes you want to hang out a little bit longer with your friends. There is live music on the patio area, space for the kids to roam safely nearby and the inside bar is absolutely beautiful.

The owners have done a wonderful job at both locations creating welcoming environments for locals and traveling visitors alike. There are people of all ages and backgrounds enjoying both spaces. The restaurants continue to serve their communities well by making available yummy food and drinks, free live entertainment and an awesome dining experience that surpasses the typical night out.

Choose Your Level of Patriotism this 4th of July

Drive any direction, and you will find one of the many different Fourth of July celebrations around the state. From massive fireworks extravaganzas to traditional hometown displays of patriotism, or old-fashioned jubilees, there is a celebration the entire family will enjoy. Oklahoma is one state that does not skimp on the festivities Go Big or Go Home Edmond's LibertyFest is a must-see. Encompassing ten events that span a week, LibertyFest has been recognized by CNN and USA Today as among the top ten festivals to experience in the U.S. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the festival. From parades, a car show, activities for the kids, and fireworks, there is something different to do every day for the entire family.

Take in the scenery of the Arkansas River and check out Tulsa's FreedomFest. A day of activities takes place around Tulsa's River Parks district. Relax with a picnic before enjoying live music, face painting, food vendors, and other concessions. Then stay for one of the largest fireworks displays in the state.

Come see Moore and a Celebration in the Heartland. This festival is considered to be among the best Oklahoma has to offer. Parents will enjoy the motorcycle, car, and truck show, while the kids enjoy frolicking in the giant sandpit or experiencing the arts tent. A wide variety of vendors and food concessions will also be present, along with carnival rides followed by a spectacular fireworks show.

Freedom Fest in Yukon offers attendees a day-long series of events. Kids will enjoy the parade, arts and crafts, swimming, and games, while the entire family can take advantage of free ice cream, watermelon, and music. The night's festivities come to a close at Chisolm Trail Park with an awe-inspiring fireworks display and a performance by the Oklahoma City Philharmonic orchestra.

Hometown Pride The annual Blackberry Festival in McLoud embellishes oldfashioned traditions with one of the state's longest-running Fourth of July festivals. Experience a day filled with live history demonstrations, car shows, and blackberry cobbler eating contests. A carnival and fireworks display round out the festivities.

The Watermelon Seed Spittin' World Championship is right here in Oklahoma. For over 50 years, Pauls Valley has hosted the competition every Fourth of July. The event is so popular that it has been featured in the Guinness Book of World Records and Ripley’s Believe It or Not. It has as even made an appearance in Trivial Pursuit. Contestants compete to break the current world record of 66 feet 11 inches held since 1989.

If tradition is what you are after, look no further than Pawnee. The town hosts festivities known for old-fashioned fun each year, including bubble gum blowing contests, turtle races, water balloon fights, and horseshoe games. Join in the egg-toss, tug-of-war, boot toss, or sack races. If games are not for you, then take part in the mid-day parade and evening fireworks.

Boomer Blast in Stillwater has become synonymous with patriotism. The day ends with a traditional fireworks display set to music. However, leading up till then, the day is filled with events.

Participate in a fishing tournament, boat, or swim on Boomer Lake, and listen to live music. But don't forget to sample the food!

Scratch Kitchen and Cocktails

THE LOVE IS IN THE NAME

by James Frazier When you hear the term scratch, I am sure that a lot of things go through your mind. For me, I think about my grandmother grabbing some fresh okra from her garden, some steaks from the freezer, and somehow 30 minutes later eating Chicken fried steak, with fried okra all made from scratch. This is sorta like that. Scratch Kitchen and Cocktails is what happens when you have a passion for creating fresh food from scratch and thoughtful cocktails that perfectly pair with the amazing food. I got to sit down with Chef Luke Fry to discuss his passion for great food and scratch cooking. “Really what we're wanting to get from this is just reintroducing people to not a high-class style of food, but just food done well, done right.” The style of the food is constantly developing and is kind of becoming this cool like Southwest indigenous people's Creole blend of foods. From the beginning owner, Brady Sexton found a passion for Craft Cocktails and Craft Cooking, and we are so glad he did.

When you first walk into Scratch, you will notice the unique style of the space, it’s in a historic Norman brick building right in the heart of downtown Norman. The decor is simple, but elegant and matches the food and drink to a tee. It’s bright, without being too bright, and immediately creates a sense of comfort. The bar is well stocked and is clear that the cocktails are going to be extremely well thought out including a lot of scratch-made ingredients. As a craft cocktail fan, needless to say, this excited me, and they delivered amazingly. I got to experience the Eastern Sun created by Bradley Quy made with Tozai Living Jewel Sake, Yuzu Liquor, Bombay East gin, lemongrass syrup, saline solution, and Bolivar bitters. It was magical. The flavor was unexpected and mesmerizing.

Let’s talk about the food, because as good as the cocktails are, Chef Luke Fry is the star of the show. We started out with a classic dish that blew me away with its elegance and flavors. The fried green tomatoes served with black bean and corn salsa and buttermilk herb dressing were a revelation. The tomatoes were the perfect texture and made an absolute statement of freshness and fried goodness. I hate to say this, but they were better than my grandmother’s. This was followed up by the Seasonal Hummus plate, which at the time was a caramelized onion and balsamic hummus. I had no idea you could pack that much flavor in hummus. This is served with Gluten free pita and an olive medley that was the epitome of decadence.

For the main course, we went classic to another level with the best mountain of Chicken and waffles I have ever experienced. The sweet corn waffle with hot honey topped with amazingly moist Chicken then cascading with the most delicious buttermilk herb dressing served with 2 stunning over easy eggs, was miraculous. I can’t explain to any level of understanding how perfect the chicken was on this stack of waffles. The dressing with the hot honey created a combination of flavors that was hard to track but perfectly executed. Your tastebuds think it’s spicy, then sweet, then tangy and rich but overall confused and comforting. This is scratch comfort food to a whole new level.

In the evaluation of scratch cooking, it’s important to look around and see what resources you have. In this instance

having some Latin influence in the kitchen can really pay off with specials like the squash blossoms spinach and mozzarella. Pupusa, with a stewed tomato sauce and a cabbage slaw. Pupusas are not something you see on many menus, but if you know, you know. These creations were unbelievably delicious. The combination of flavors with the luxuriously simple cakes was undeniably delicious. If you don’t know pupusas, you have to taste these magical Central American cuisine.

Have you ever had a dessert so good it made you mad?

Yeah, I don’t understand either. Chef Luke’s seasonal cobblers are something of legend. In this instance, the peanut butter and jelly cobbler made me furious. I guess my reaction was part confusion mixed with jealousy that I never thought of this kind of flavor combination and held together with thoughts of having to finish the cobbler after such an amazing meal. Why couldn’t he have just brought it to me at the beginning? Oh, I know, we had to get through all the other amazing food first. It makes sense but doesn’t make it any better.

What does the future hold for Scratch Kitchen and Cocktails? Look for more weekly specials to complete the already amazing menu. “I want to take different cooking styles and I wanted to take different foods and make them fancy, make them interesting”, said Chef Luke Fry. In the near future they will be kicking off some wine dinners, beer dinners and even cocktail dinners. It’s exciting to see a place like Scratch take on such a love for creating one of a kind dishes with local and fresh ingredients. CELEBRATI NG J UNETEENTH AND OKLAHOMA HI STORY!

Juneteenth is a celebration acknowledging the point at which the last remaining enslaved African Americans were informed of their freedom.

Following this event the Black community began to commemorate this in a tradition that has lasted through to today.

The Juneteenth holiday has been celebrated as a day of independence where the United States of America began to move towards living up to its own ideals. Throughout the years there have been several efforts to get Juneteenth adopted as a national holiday, but these only succeeded in some state specific recognition.

Following the global attention placed upon America’s history of racism and slavery in 2020 there was a renewed interest in a federal Juneteenth holiday. It was made a federal holiday on June 17th 2021 and since then has begun to be celebrated even more widely.

Oklahoma has its own rich black history. African Americans have contributed to this area for generations. Many were brought here as STATE & LOCAL part of the Native American tribes’ removal to Indian Territory. My own family origins in Oklahoma trace back to the Pauls Valley, Okmulgee, and Morris areas.

Following the Civil War, Oklahoma became for a lot of African Americans a place where they believed they could have the community, opportunity, and safety that they were denied elsewhere. As a result, several Oklahoma Black towns were created.

These town gave Black people the chance to have more career options, receive educations, and have more autonomy in their own ambitions.

Some of these towns included Boley, Clearview, and Langston which is home to Oklahoma’s only Historically Black college or university.

During the 1920s the Greenwood area of Tulsa would be the site of the Tulsa Race Massacre where a group of White citizens attacked the city’s thriving Black community. In the years since the Greenwood community has strived to both rebuild and educate the world about what happened there, while seeking justice and restitution.

The Greenwood Cultural Center is a great a reason to visit Tulsa.

Learning about the history of Greenwood residents the success they achieved, the backlash they received, and how they are still moving forward despite historical trauma. Discovering all of this in the place where it happened is a unique experience.

Great figures like Clara Luper struggled during the Civil Rights movement to fight for all Oklahomans to be treated equitably. The continuation of her spirit of social justice is evident in the activism seen today in places like the Northeast side of Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma City will be hosting its own Juneteenth Festival which will feature a free 5k in collaboration with Red Coyote Running and Fitness. The 5k will take place Friday June 17th, followed by the festival June 18th-19th located conveniently on Northeast 23rd Street.

Juneteenth is the perfect time to explore the many black-owned restaurants and other businesses throughout the state. Some great options for a bite to eat include Florence’s or the Eastside Pizza House.

Lastly if you are looking for music for your Juneteenth soundtrack there’s no better place to start than with Tulsa’s own Charlie Wilson and The GAP Band. The GAP band name comes straight from the Greenwood, Archer and Pine community, there hit song “Outstanding” is a classic.

This is a time to consider the collective journey our country has been on in regard to racial equity, its stumbles and its strides. It is thrilling to think of what progress we can make by future Juneteenths.

The Lounge Craft Kitchen + Cocktails is a golden beam, directing local Oklahomans and visitors from afar to join them in their classic old Hollywood hideaway.

From the same creative minds of Edmond classics, Eddies and Hot Wings, came the idea for an upscale bourbon lounge. Unlike their other restaurants, The Lounge sets its sights on offering things that you can’t find anywhere else in the OKC metro. The owner Eddie wanted to pay homage his father’s restaurant growing up in Upstate New York. A place that prides itself on excellence. Whether that be the food they serve to the cocktails they create to the staff- everything is exceptional.

The Lounge itself is built to look chic and casual in an effortless way, a shared virtue of Old-World New York and Hollywood glamour. The classic brick-andmortar incarnation of “Oh, this old thing?.” The room has a dark yet warm feel with black walls allowing for gold accent to pop out and shine. Textures of dark wood, velvet, marble, and mirrors add to the overall vibe. Classic photos of famous faces adorn the walls along with a collection of old radios. A space that makes you feel like you truly have teleported back to simple, elegant time.

The opening menu at The Lounge reads classic American dishes like hamburgers, pasta, chicken wings and pork chops. But when you look a little deeper it reveals a range of lovely Oklahoma flavors running through it. Specialties like local peppercorn strip steak with jasmine rice and stir fry vegetables.

To Chilean Sea Bass grilled with fire roasted serrano glaze, grilled broccolini, and a Caesar tri kale salad.

The cocktails are built in a similar mold, classics with a twist. Eddie wanted the bar to feature the best and most diverse selection of whiskeys. Everything from his personal favorite Irish whiskeys to scotch and bourbons.

In all you can choose from over 60 different bottles.

However, they are much more than just a whiskey bar.

They have a full selection serving every alcohol, wine, beer, and aperitif you could want. Their bartenders are trained mixologist who can serve you a classic, a special from The Lounge menu or anything you would like.

Head mixologist, Nicholas Klein prides himself and his fellow bar staff, on their ability to create any drink to

pair with whatever you may be eating, flavors you prefer or mood you are in. The most popular cocktail options are the Llama Dey Ray with pineapple and jalapeno infused tequila, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, and fresh strawberries. It’s a sweet and unexpected drink where you can taste all the sweet freshness's from the strawberries and pineapples with a distinct kick from the jalapenos. If you're in a more traditional mood I’d suggest Truth + Lies, a great mix of rye whiskey, reposado tequila, ginger beer, honey, and fresh lime juice. A fun spin on a class mule you’ll only find at The Lounge. However, if you want something truly special and unique, I’d go off menu. The best Old Fashion can be found right here and it's unlike any that you’ve had before- its smoked.

They take the traditional cocktail and add their own signature spin by mixing the rye whiskey with honey, fresh oranges and charred peels, rosemary, and bitters. What makes its better than the rest is they infuse the rye with mesquite smoke, right in the bottle, before pouring into your glass. It's like watching the fog dissipate over your drink before you dive in. The richness from the smoke breaks through the whiskey and the sweetness of the honey and oranges balance it all out. It may just be the best cocktail The Lounge has to offer if not the entire state.

Celebrate Dad This Year with an Outdoor Activity He Will Love

The celebration of fathers in the U.S. did not start as smoothly as most people would have guessed. Sonora Smart Dodd was one of six children raised by a widower who worked to have a holiday similar to Mother’s Day established for fathers. On June 19th, 1910, the State of Washington adopted the holiday.

The holiday went through several trial periods. During the 1920s and 1930s, a movement began that sought to do away with Mother’s and Father’s Day. Father’s Day was viewed as a gimmick for commercial gains. However, some retailers worked tirelessly to keep the tradition alive by devising efforts to make the holiday more like a second Christmas.

Retailers promoted items such as hats, sporting goods, neckties, golf clubs, and tobacco. By the end of WWII, manufacturers and retailers argued that Father’s Day should be a way to honor American troops and support the war efforts. In 1972, President Nixon issued a proclamation that declared Father’s Day a national holiday.

Today, most fathers enjoy spending the holiday with family and doing outdoor activities, whereas less than 16% of fathers prefer tangible items. This Father’s Day, there are many activities, events, and festivals throughout the state. Where to go and what to do is the most challenging decision.

Oklahoma Brewers Fest Attend Oklahoma Brewers Fest on June 18th at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Over 40 Oklahoma breweries participate in the event sponsored by the Craft Brewers Association of Oklahoma. Attendees can select from more than 100 beers that have been exclusively released for the festival.

AAA Route 66 Fest June 18th through the 19th is the AAA Route 66 Road Fest in OKC. However, the event runs an entire week in Oklahoma City and ends in Tulsa. Hear live music at the OKC Bennett Event Center and see performances from the Wise Guys, Tulsa Playboys, Jason Boland, the Stragglers, Rusty, Dusty, and many others.

BRICKTOWN

Build It And They Will Come

Former warehouse district has turned into quite the entertainment mecca. In the late 1800’s multilevel brick buildings popped up to fulfill the country’s shipping demand for goods and services. Frisco, Katy, Rock Island, and Santa Fe lines were are all major railroad playersbuilt distribution hubs in downtown Oklahoma City.

The Great Depression stalled the economy and the transition from railway transport to trucks on major highways led to a serious decline of the area. Businesses shut down causing families to move further out to the newly developed outlying suburbs. By the 1980’s many of the once-thriving buildings sat empty, decaying, and abandoned.

After losing a bid for a new airline maintenance facility, former OKC mayor Ron Norick toured the winning city of Indianapolis to try and catch a glimpse of why Oklahoma City did not measure up. Norick made the astute observation that OKC lacked a lively downtown area that would lure in both visitors and entertain residents.

In 1993, Norick championed and persuaded citizens to approve a penny sales tax to invest in OKC’s future. The gamble paid off. The first project that was completed was the Bricktown Ballpark. Opening day was April 16, 1998, marking the beginning of the Bricktown rebirth.

Today Bricktown is very much alive and well. Restaurants, bars, dance clubs, retail shops, and other various entertainment spots welcome guests to come visit. One of the first revitalization businesses to plant their roots is an Oklahoma favorite, Bricktown Brewery.

Established in 1993 in a former candy factory, the Bricktown Brewery started as a microbrewery restaurant that is still going and is stronger than ever. Bricktown Brewery crafts their own beer onsite and patrons are able to select other beverages on the menu from other nearby breweries.

Besides great beers, the Brewery elevates standard bar food by offering top-notch cuisine. Ales, IPA, ciders, hard seltzers, whatever your beer needs may be, Bricktown Brewery can accommodate your desires. The location is centrally located making it perfect before a Thunder game or attending a concert at the Criterion.

After your time at the brewery, head on down Sheridan Avenue to JJ’s Alley. If you’re looking for a funky, hole-in-the-wall character bar with a personality all its own, you’ve come to the right place. Don’t let

If you’ve ever driven by Señor Shots on a Saturday night, the line starts forming around 9 pm and it doesn’t stop! Do you know it’s a great location when people wait to get inside? Fantastic music to drink and dance the night away. A couple of doors down from Señor Shots, you’ll find yourself at Dollhouse OKC where you can sit back, relax, and admire the art of seduction by burlesque dancers. Some choose to ride the Bricktown Ferris Wheel for the best views of Bricktown or leisurely ride around in one of the horsedrawn carriages. You might learn something new by visiting the American Banjo Museum or the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.

Take a stroll along the Bricktown Canal among the large bronze sculptures depicting scenes from the 1889 Land Run or visit the Boathouse District where there’s a good chance you might run into an Olympic athlete. There is truly something for everyone in Bricktown.

When you visit Bricktown it’s almost a guarantee you’ll grab a bite to eat at some point. There are wonderful restaurants along the canal that provide a lovely outdoor eating opportunity, such as Bourbon St. Café with its New Orleans creole flair. If you’re craving tacos, you’ll have a difficult choice to make between Fuzzy’s Taco Shop and Yucatán Taco Stand. An old favorite it is Pearl’s Crabtown for the seafood lover. If you’re craving steak, Mickey Mantle’s is the go-to place while visiting Bricktown. If your sweet tooth is acting up go to Pinkitzel for a cupcake, Marble Slab Creamery for an ice cream cone or pick up your favorite candy at Bricktown Candy Co. Many new businesses have set up shop recently in Bricktown and many more are coming soon. Rendezvous pizza next door to Bricktown Brewery has delicious Detroit-style pizza available as a whole pie or you can order specialty slices. The Old Spaghetti Factory opened recently on Mickey Mantle Drive offering traditional Italian meals and don’t miss out on their outstanding rooftop seating to enhance your dining experience.

The Joinery Opened recently and is all the buzz. Family-friendly casual restaurant serving Italian American dishes. Quench your thirst with craft beer, cocktails, and wine. The second-floor houses Oklahoma’s first golf simulator bar. You can play 18 holes without going to the country club. Who knows maybe a few cocktails, will make you a better golfer. Be on the lookout for a much-anticipated Dave’s Hot Chicken, which is scheduled to open soon next to Fuzzy’s Taco Shop in lower Bricktown.

The vision Mayor Norick had for Oklahoma City has come to fruition and the momentum appears to be not slowing down anytime soon. The city continues to prosper and expand.
