A graduation playlist Every song evokes a memory. For many of us, these are the songs that defined our college experience. Billboard’s Top Two for each of the last four years will bring us back years later to our time spent at JMU — from parties we attended to late-night drives to Kline’s.

In a mysterious manner, sometime shortly after spring break a word disappeared from the vernacular of us seniors.

As a student of language and a senior myself, I too wondered what happened to this special word and why all of a sudden this “G-word” seemed to disappear from campus, only uttered by a few clueless underclassmen.

This elusive word, dare I say, graduation, has only continued its evasive maneuvering as the countdown clock to graduation ticks to zero.

Even though the senior engineering majors have employed all those crazy instruments in the basement of the integrated science and technology building to try to freeze time, they have yet to produce a device other than a soy-powered truck and motorcycle to halt that countdown.

Since the graduation clock is ticking down faster than the freeze ray completion clock it looks like we are going to have to face the G-word on May 7.

Before the chills go down your spine or an instant sad feeling overcomes your emotional state, take a second to actually consider the power of that G-word and what it truly means.

In the power of the dreaded G are the thousands of memories of great friends, surreal experiences and challenges that made us grow more than we could have ever expected.

But here’s the problem: As I talk to other seniors about graduation, I find the freeflowing tears a troublesome sign. I ask, why cry? What’s there to be sad about?

Yes, I am just as terrified as the next of that jungle called the job market and I too don’t want to break from the comfort of the Valley. But people, we need to bring this crying to an end.

Of course the only way to stop the tears from flowing is to make a war on tears. Here, by the power vested in me, I declare a war on graduation tears.

Let’s bring the G-word back into our vocabulary. Use it freely and regularly and fully embrace that four-syllable (don’t worry,

I had to count it out too) word that has disappeared from campus. Maybe we should start an endangered word list.

Currently topping that list is “graduation.”

But let’s save graduation from the brink of extinction and throw “tears” at the top of the list.

Before you come with your watery eyes and try to tell me that I’m heartless, wipe your eyes and pause for a second.

Remember the power of the G-word.

Remember that time ESPN2 covered the football playoff game against Montana.

Remember that time we had little sleepovers in Carrier. Remember indulging in grilled cheese Thursday and then working it off in UREC. And then remember the people we did all those crazy events with. Remember the ones we met during freshman orientation.

Remember that best friend you met and can’t imagine living life without. Remember those who have gone hand in hand with us and were there to help us up when we stumbled and celebrated proudly when we succeeded.

I’ll admit that brings mixed feelings — but those feelings of sadness are quickly suppressed by the sweet emotion of knowing we made relationships with people we will have until the end of time.

If your tears are a-flowin’, then please get a grip on yourself — ask the person next to you to give you a little slap.

So someday down that long road, if you find me, don’t be a stranger, as we — all 4,000 of us — will always have this shared journey in common. It will always give us something to laugh and reminisce about.

It will always be there to guide us when we lose sight of what’s right.

Though I have declared a war on tears, if a droplet or two glistens down your check as you cross the graduation stage, don’t be embarrassed; it’s probably tears of joy, and I guess that’s an exception.

And when you look out and see me sitting there, a few tears may trickle down my cheek too.

Goodbye JMU, hello fears So apparently, they’re kicking me out next week. Predictably, this would be the place where I reminisce about all the crazy wild times that took place over the last four years and all the shenanigans I’ll never be able to take part in again. And it is true — I will miss all of that.

But instead, I’d like to share with you all my deepest and darkest fears about “the real world,” so that if at any point in time, you see me suffering from adulthood, you might have devised a plan by then to help me out. . Natural disasters. . Checking into hotel rooms by myself for any given reason. We all know being the single chick at the end of the hall is asking for it. . Living by myself. We all know the single chick at the top of the apartment complex is asking for it. . Fixing the garbage disposal by myself. . Having to change tires by myself. . Doing anything that calls for any full responsibility of myself. . Colonoscopies: no thank you. . Being at an age when, if pregnant, I’m considered “parental” but no longer eligible to appear on “Teen Mom.” . While we’re on it — having to go through labor. . Filing for taxes. . Handling my own health insurance. . Handling my own life insurance. . Insurance. . Having to plan my parents’ th wedding anniversary. . Having to make a judgment call about picking beige or off-white to paint my future den. . Mom jeans. . Old-lady knees. . Saggy boobs. . Saggy anything. . Marrying a man who will one day also be saggy — think about it, not pretty. . Zombies. . Biological terrorism. . Choosing a school for my children. . Nuclear war. . Handling raw meat to cook for my family. . Dealing with my kids’, pets’, husband’s, etc. vomit when they are sick. . The economy. . Whatever technology will be available for our children that we as adults won’t know how to navigate. . Botox, as a rule. . Ending up alone.

Hang in there, seniors. With the possible exception of No. , we don’t really have a choice. My hope is that we all rise to the occasion and lose all gag reflexes when it comes to handling other people’s puke. With any luck, the ability to cope with the horrors of adulthood will grow as we get older and we will all age in reverse like Demi Moore or Sandra Bullock. Congratulations, Class of ! I’ll see you out there.

Here’s a few places around Harrisonburg that offer catering for graduation parties. Many of them have group rates.

SANDWICHES Panera Bread Panera Bread offers sandwich, soup, salad and breakfast platters as catering options. Each platter serves five to 10 people and the prices range from $50 to $70 each.

The Bowl of Good A community-oriented restaurant that fills their main dishes with local ingredients, the Bowl of Good offers breakfast, brown-bag lunches, sandwiches, wraps, drinks and desserts on their catering menu. Prices start at $4.99 per person for breakfast and up to $11 per person for its lunch options.

The Bowl of Good has a room that can be rented out for catering, but off-site catering is also offered with a minimum of 15 people.

Smokin’ Pig Located next to Kline’s Dairy Bar on Wolfe Street, it has some of the best barbecue in town. They offer the Carolina Red, a vinegar-based sauce. as well as a

conventional tomato-based sauce with choices of pork or chicken.

The catering options come with a choice of three traditional sides, including baked beans, mashed potatoes, green beans, coleslaw and fried pickles. The pork options are $7 per person and the chicken options are $8.50 per person. Buns and silverware are provided.

JMU CLASSICS Mr. J’s If you needed your New York bagel fix, Mr. J’s was the place to go, so choosing them for catering seems like an easy option. With choices like party bagels, subs, bag lunches, chicken parmesan and breakfast trays, there is something to please everyone’s palate. Mr. J’s can serve up to 34 people with one tray. Costs start at $24.99 and up to $78.99 for the dinner options with the breakfast priced per person.

Dave’s Downtown Taverna After four years of calling Dave’s for late-night snacks like cheesesteaks and gyros, now they can cater you.

With soups, salads, sandwiches, pizza, pasta and more they can feed a group of any size. With costs from $7 to $15 per person, they are more affordable than some of the other options in town.

PRICIER OPTIONS Clementine Cafe Clementine Cafe is known for their eyecatching menu and their catering menu is no different. From mini crab cakes to chocolate-dipped strawberries, its appetizer, lunch and dinner catering options are sure to mix things up. All meals are served buffet-style with beverages included. The dinner buffet costs around $22 per person, lunch is about $12 per person and the appetizer menu ranges from $1.50 to $3 per person. There is a 25-person minimum for lunch or an additional service charge is added depending on the number of guests and length of the event.

L’Italia Restaurant and Bar L’Italia serves the traditional Italian meals, satiating those cravings for Itialian cuisine. With the basic choices like spaghetti and lasagna to specialties like chicken cacciatore and lobster ravioli, the menu covers just about every taste. Each catering tray serves between eight and  people and cost anywhere from $ to $, with half-trays available at a lower cost.
