SOCRATIS SOCRATOUS Socratis Socratous (b. in Paphos, Cyprus, 1971) is a graduate of the Athens School of Fine Arts in Athens. He lives and works in Greece and Cyprus.

«Είναι συγκεκριµένη η στιγµή που µε διαµόρφωσε», είπε σε µια πρόσφατη συνέντευξη ο καλλιτέχνης Σωκράτης Σωκράτους. «Το 2003 που άνοιξαν τα σύνορα στην Κύπρο, µπόρεσα να δω και το υπόλοιπο νησί, το άλλο µισό, που δεν είχα δει µέχρι τότε, µόνο το φανταζόµουν. Από εκείνη την εµπειρία άλλαξε όλη µου η δουλειά, απλά, φυσικά, και χωρίς ιδιαίτερη σκέψη. Όλα κατέρρευσαν µε το που πέρασα στην άλλη πλευρά. Το φυσικό περιβάλλον, το οποίο για 35 χρόνια ήταν ακαλλιέργητο και αφηµένο στην τύχη του, ήταν παράδοξο κι όµορφο µαζί. Η φύση είχε εισβάλει µέσα στις πόλεις, στα σπίτια. Ένας διαφορετικός πλανήτης. Μέχρι τότε είχα µεγαλώσει σαν παιδί µε τον τρόµο να µην περάσω τα σύνορα από λάθος. Μέχρι τότε υπήρχε ο φόβος του αγνώστου...». Η δουλειά του δεν κατηγοριοποιείται ούτε περιγράφεται εύκολα µε δόκιµους όρους της σύγχρονης τέχνης. Πολιτική ή αφηρηµένη; Φορµαλιστική ή εννοιολογική; Το «νόηµα» και η «µη ενοποιηµένη αισθητική» τον απασχολούν ισάξια. Τόσο η πολιτική συνείδηση και η ενασχόλησή του µε τα κοινά όσο και η έλξη του για την πιο απροσδιόριστη οµορφιά της ζωής είναι εναύσµατα για το συνολικό έργο του: ένα χαρµόλυπο κράµα φωτός και σκοταδιού, ελπίδας και απογοήτευσης, ιδιωτικής αφήγησης και συλλογικής µνήµης. Ο Σωκράτης Σωκράτους είναι ένας καλλιτέχνης ο οποίος ζει σε διαρκή κίνηση, ανάµεσα σε διαµελισµένους τόπους, σε διαφορετικές χώρες, σε διαφορετικά σπίτια, σε διαφορετικά περιβάλλοντα, και καταγράφει τον γύρω κόσµο σε ρυθµό καθηµερινού µάντρα αντικατοπτρίζοντας έτσι τον παλµό της «πόλεως» –µιας οποιασδήποτε πόλης εκτεθειµένης στις πολιτικοκοινωνικές εξελίξεις. Η δουλειά του είναι τόσο η δράση της παρατήρησης και της κίνησης όσο και το αποτέλεσµα αυτής. Μοιάζει το έργο του να ξεκινάει από τη στιγµή που θα «βγει από το σπίτι του» και να µη σταµατάει ποτέ. Αυτή ακριβώς η βιωµατική σχέση του µε τον «δρόµο» (δρόµο µε την έννοια της αρχαίας αγοράς, όπου τα κοινά βρίσκονται υπό διαπραγµάτευση από τους πολίτες) και τα γεγονότα τα οποία συµβαίνουν σε αυτόν µοιάζουν να είναι το κεντρικό του θέµα. Η αίσθηση µιας ακόµη διάστασης της πραγµατικότητας, όπως

“My artistic self has been shaped by a particular moment”, Socratis Socratous stated at a recent interview. “In 2003, when the borders were opened in Cyprus, I had the chance to see the rest of the island, the other half, which until then I hadn’t seen, but only imagined. From that experience on, my whole work changed, naturally and without much thought. As soon as I crossed to the other side many of my convictions collapsed.

For thirty five years, the natural environment, the scenery (of the other half of Cyprus) had been uncultivated and undisturbed; it was both strange and beautiful. Nature had invaded the cities, the houses. It seemed like another planet. Until that moment, I had grown up with the fear of crossing the borders by mistake. Until that moment there was the fear of the unknown...”

Socratous’ work is not easily classified or described in contemporary art history established terms. Political or abstract? Formalistic or conceptual? He is equally concerned with “meaning” and “form”. His political conscience and his involvement in public affairs, as well as his attraction to the undefined beauty of life, trigger his work as a whole: a happy-sad mixture of light and darkness, hope and disillusionment, private and collective memory.

Socratis Socratous is an artist who lives in constant motion, between dispersed spaces, in different countries, in different houses, in different environments, registering the world around him in a pace of everyday mantra, while reflecting the heartbeat of the “polis”–any city exposed to socio-political events. His work comprises the action of observation and movement, along with its outcome. It seems that his work starts the moment “he leaves home” and never stops. It is precisely this lived relation he has with the “street” (in the sense of the ancient agora, where public affairs are discussed by the citizens) and the events he experiences that seem to be his central topic. The sense of yet another dimension of reality, the way only he sees it, and not the way it ostensibly seems to occur, is what he possibly wants–above all–to communicate with us, always allowing space for a series of different, perhaps even contradicting, interpretations. The aim is to raise an issue, but not stripped of his personal view.

The lived experience, either conscious or unconscious, is often what provides perspective with “acknowledgement” and “clarity”. It is the artist himself, however, who chooses what to do with this experience in the end. And that is “politics” in its healthiest form. Whether it is about the condition of the financial and humanitarian crisis in Greece–which Socratous experiences fully since he lives in Athens–or about the division of Cyprus–in which he grew up–notions as ruin and displacement, as well as of hope and that of the Mediterranean light, are reflected in his works–with no conceptual tricks.

Simply and effortlessly, as if this reflection is performed naturally. However, his aim is not to visually narrate the obvious, but to add one more aspect to this social mosaic in which we live. It looks as if his eyes fall on an apparently intangible “entropic” energy formed around facts and on “connotations”. And that’s where the singularity of his works lies.

They do not denounce, neither do they want to raise the spectator’s conscience in the way τη βλέπει µόνο ο ίδιος, και όχι όπως φαινοµενικά µοιάζει να συµβαίνει, είναι αυτό που πιθανά θέλει –περισσότερο απ’ όλα– να επικοινωνήσει µαζί µας, αφήνοντας χώρο πάντα για µια σειρά διαφορετικών, ίσως και αντιφατικών µεταξύ τους, ερµηνειών. Ο σκοπός είναι να τεθεί το ζήτηµα, όχι όµως απογυµνωµένο από την προσωπική του µατιά. Το βίωµα, είτε συνειδητό είτε και ασυνείδητο, είναι πολλές φορές αυτό που «ευαισθητοποιεί» και «καθαρίζει» την οπτική. Είναι ο ίδιος ο καλλιτέχνης, όµως, που επιλέγει τι να κάνει µε αυτό το βίωµα τελικά. Και αυτό είναι πολιτική, στην πιο υγιή της µορφή. Είτε πρόκειται για τη συνθήκη της οικονοµικής και ανθρωπιστικής κρίσης στην Ελλάδα –την οποία ο Σωκράτους

ζει σε πρώτο βαθµό εφόσον κατοικεί στην Αθήνα–, είτε πρόκειται για τον κυπριακό διαµελισµό –µέσα στον οποίο µεγάλωσε–, οι έννοιες της καταστροφής και της εκτόπισης, όπως και της ελπίδας και του µεσογειακού φωτός, αποτυπώνονται στα έργα –χωρίς νοητικά τεχνάσµατα. Απλά και αβίαστα, λες και αυτή η αποτύπωση αποτελεί µια φυσική λειτουργία. Ωστόσο, ο στόχος του δεν είναι να αφηγηθεί εικαστικά το ορατό, αλλά να προσθέσει ακόµη µια πτυχή µέσα σε αυτό το κοινωνικό µωσαϊκό που ζούµε. Μοιάζει κάπως σαν να συναντάει µε το βλέµµα του µια φαινοµενικά άυλη «εντροπική» ενέργεια που σχηµατίζεται γύρω από τα γεγονότα και πάνω στους «συσχετισµούς». Και εκεί έγκειται και η ιδιαιτερότητα των έργων του. ∆εν καταγγέλλουν,

ούτε θέλουν να αφυπνίσουν τη συνείδηση του θεατή µε τον τρόπο ενός µανιφέστου. Αναφέρονται σε µια συνάντηση του βλέµµατος του καλλιτέχνη µε τον φαινοµενικά κενό –από νόηµα– χώρο (τον «αρνητικό χώρο», όπως θα ονοµαζόταν το διάστηµα µεταξύ των αντικειµένων σε µια κλασική ζωγραφική σύνθεση), και εάν σε αυτήν τη συνάντηση βρεθεί και ο θεατής, τότε η τέχνη υφίσταται. Χωρίς να είναι υποχρεωτική. Η έννοια του «κήπου» είναι ένα επαναλαµβανόµενο θέµα στη δουλειά του Σωκράτους. Είτε µε τη µορφή τεχνητών αποδράσεων, κήπων αποτελούµενων από πλαστικά φυτά που δεν έχουν την ιδιότητα ούτε να µυρίζουν ούτε να αποσυντίθενται –στα παλαιότερά του έργα–, ή άλλοτε µε τη µορφή «µνηµείων» της φύσης, τα οποία αποτελούνται από αληθινά φυτά που έχουν εκτοπιστεί από το φυσικό τους περιβάλλον, και πρόσφατα µε την αποσπασµατική µετα-αφήγηση του Εθνικού Κήπου της Αθήνας ως συµβόλου της εθνικής ταυτότητας ενός λαού, η αναφορά στο φυσικό περιβάλλον και στη ζωή που αυτό εµπεριέχει είναι χαρακτηριστική στο µεγαλύτερο κοµµάτι του έργου του καλλιτέχνη. Θηµωνιές από λουλούδια τα οποία ο Σωκράτους βρίσκει στα σκουπίδια, αφότου αυτά πρωτίστως κλάπηκαν και κόπηκαν για να χρησιµοποιηθούν ως ένα ανταλλάξιµο είδος καταναλωτικής δύναµης σε ψυχαγωγικούς χώρους (όπως αυτοί των κέντρων ελαφρολαϊκής µουσικής, των µπουζουκιών), και µαζί µε αυτές, ολόκληρα δέντρα, φοίνικες που ξεριζώθηκαν µε κυβερνητική εντολή από τον τόπο όπου φυτεύτηκαν υπό την απειλή κινδύνου από αυγά κόµπρας στη ρίζα τους –γεγονός που αποτελεί ουσιαστικά µια κίνηση εξωτερικής πολιτικής που εµπεριέχει διχόνοια–, τα οποία ο καλλιτέχνης συλλέγει και περιφέρει στην Μπιενάλε της Βενετίας ως σχόλιο πάνω στην ανοχή της διαφορετικότητας, είναι δύο από τις κυριότερες µετεµψυχώσεις της «φύσης» στο έργο του. Μέσα από παραβολές αντλούµενες από τον φυσικό κόσµο, ο Σωκράτους δεν καταγράφει απλά το ιστορικό παρελθόν, αλλά αντικατοπτρίζει κάτι πιο καθολικό: τις αδυναµίες της ανθρώπινης φύσης. Αναφερόµενος σε «σκοτωµένα» λουλούδια που κόπηκαν προκειµένου να χρησιµοποιηθούν ως νόµισµα στην αγορά «δύναµης», και ταυτόχρονα σε µυθεύµατα για απειλητικά φίδια, που συνέβαλαν στο

of a manifesto. They refer to an encounter of the artist’s view with the seemingly devoid of meaning space (“negative space”, as the distance between objects would be called in a classical painting), and if spectators find themselves in this encounter, then there is art; but it is not binding.

The concept of “garden” is a recurring theme in Socratous work. Either in the form of artificial getaways, gardens consisting of plastic plants with no smell or decay–in his older works–or sometimes in the form of “monuments” of nature, consisting of actual plants that have been dislocated from their natural environment, and recently with the fragmented meta-narration of the Athens National Garden, as a symbol of national identity for a people, the reference to the natural environment and the life it involves is typical in most of the artist’s work. Bunches of flowers which Socratous finds in the trash, after they were first cut or stolen to be used as a tradable kind of consumption power in entertainment spaces (just like the popular music ones, the bouzouki centres), and along them, entire trees, palm trees uprooted by governmental order from the place they were planted in danger of cobra eggs in their roots–something which is actually a foreign policy gesture involving division–that the artist collects and transfers at the Venice Biennale as a comment on tolerating difference, are two of “nature’s” main reincarnations in his work.

Through parables drawn from the natural world, Socratous does not just record the historical past, but reflects something more universal: the weakness of human nature.

Referring to “murdered” flowers cut in order to be used as a currency in the “power” market, and at the same time to fables of menacing snakes, that contributed to the uprooting of the then newly imported Egyptian palm trees on the Turkish side of Cyprus, he narrates in the most enchanting way stories of relentless fury for power and its impact on the socio-political scenery.

In the last series of his work, in relation to the National Garden of Athens, Socratous makes us face once more the essential meaning of coexistence and difference. He deals with various plants, as well as with the stories of people connected to this place. He picks a place which lingers between public and private life, between city and countryside, between constructed reality and nature. The garden is a space that, due to its transitional character, might host, at the same time, different activities–sometimes poles apart. In a residence the garden would have been an introduction to public space. In the context of a large city, however, the garden could be the transition to a more private encounter with one’s self and others. First, due to the natural limits and divisions with the urban landscape, and secondly, due to the reconstruction of a conceptual Arcadia that contact with nature entails.

A public garden is made to allow for temporary serenity, ostensibly away from the worries and noise of the city. Contact with vegetation opens up the path towards a more sensual pleasure of life and in harmony with the uttermost mystical state of the human mind. Contact with plants, mountains, plains, water, assisted ancient Greeks to conclude in their belief that Arcadia is the “ideal place”. But what could this mean in the context of a garden within a city collapsing due to the “crisis”? Perhaps, in this context, Arcadia is a temporary liberation from the need for material goods and hunt for power. At the same

time, perhaps it is breaking the limits defined by our dependence on particular familiar paths, and transition to an unexplained feeling of inner fulfilment that can only be achieved when close to natural environment.

“The garden”, Socratous says, “is not so much used as space entered and crossed to reach a destination fast, but as a space where one wanders. The initial purpose of the garden was to create an idyllic environment, where the city dweller will think, daydream, rest from routine and public life...” In this sense, the garden becomes the platform within which one can renounce, as they imagine, public life–either openly, in its centre, or hidden behind the leafage. The sense of mystery is diffused, just as it is reflected by the parallel lives of plants that are not entirely controlled by man. The garden is a nook of projections of what can, but also what cannot, become a reality, although they may be shaped as a thought. At the same time it is a terra incognita, with question marks and answers coexisting and feeding urban life with myths and fantasies, as well as with a tangible and substantial outlet. Henry Miller’s writing on the National Garden in 1939 is typical: “The park is still in my memory more than any other park I’ve visited in my life. The essence of a park is like when someone looks at a garden or dreams of being in a place where they can never go.”

The National Garden, previously called Royal Garden, was laid out by Friedrich von Gaertner, the architect of the palace, in 1836, following an order by Queen Amalia. It was to be a private as well as a botanical and scientific garden. The species planted in it were decorative, brought from Genoa, along with uncultivated species, brought from Sounio and Euboia. Therefore in its soil grew washingtonias, along with olive trees, laurels, pomegranate trees, and as their roots were intertwined underground vegetation grew more dense. The Garden, in modern years and after the monarchy, became a symbol of national identity; it has been used by children in search of play, pensioners that sometimes gather to play backgammon, immigrants who seek refuge, night visitors-hunters of “paid love”, tourists looking for a cool place, occasionally intellectuals in search of inspiration and many others.

It is in this garden that the urban legend of the “biting of the monkey” took place, that is said to have changed the history of Greece and lead to the Asia Minor Catastrophe. On September 17, 1920, King Alexander, a pro-democratic and supporter of Venizelos, was bitten by a sick monkey while walking in the

τη βλάστηση ανοίγει τον δρόµο σε µια πιο αισθησιακή απόλαυση της ζωής και στην αρµονία µε την πιο µυστικιστική κατάσταση του ανθρώπινου µυαλού. Η επαφή µε το πράσινο, τα βουνά, τις πεδιάδες, το νερό, βοήθησαν στην πεποίθηση των αρχαίων Ελλήνων ότι η Αρκαδία είναι το «ιδανικό µέρος». Τί θα µπορούσε, όµως, να σηµαίνει αυτό στο πλαίσιο ενός κήπου µέσα σε µια πόλη που καταρρέει από την «κρίση»; Ίσως η Αρκαδία σε αυτό το πλαίσιο να είναι µια παροδική απελευθέρωση από την ανάγκη των υλικών αγαθών και από το κυνήγι της εξουσίας. Ταυτόχρονα, ίσως και να είναι το σπάσιµο των ορίων που σχηµατίζονται από την εξάρτησή µας σε συγκεκριµένα οικεία µονοπάτια, και η µετάβαση σε ένα ανεξήγητο αίσθηµα εσωτερικής ολοκλήρωσης που µπορεί

τη φύση. Ο κήπος είναι ένας χώρος ο οποίος, λόγω του ρευστού χαρακτήρα του, µπορεί να υποδέχεται συγχρόνως διαφορετικές δραστηριότητες –καµιά φορά εκ διαµέτρου αντίθετες. Σε µια οικία ο κήπος θα ήταν εισαγωγή στον δηµόσιο χώρο. Στο πλαίσιο, όµως, µιας µεγάλης πόλης ο κήπος θα µπορούσε να αποτελέσει τη µετάβαση σε µια πιο ιδιωτική συνάντηση µε τον εαυτό και τους άλλους. Κατ’ αρχάς λόγω των φυσικών ορίων και του διαχωρισµού µε το αστικό τοπίο, και κατά δεύτερον λόγω της ανακατασκευής µιας νοηµατικής Αρκαδίας που εµπεριέχει η επαφή µε τη φύση. Ένας δηµόσιος κήπος φτιάχνεται για να επιτρέψει την προσωρινή ηρεµία, φαινοµενικά µακριά από τις έγνοιες και τους θορύβους της πόλης. Η επαφή µε

Garden, and died a few months later due to infection. Greece had just come out of World War I, a winner, on the side of the English-French alliance. King Alexander was succeeded by the dethroned Κing Constantine, a supporter of Germany; the English and French abandoned Greece in the Asia Minor Campaign, and then onwards Greece suffered a large number of casualties and refugees, since the battle was lost. Maybe that was indeed the case, maybe it was necessary to blame atrocities of war on the rage of wild nature within the Garden, rather than on politics designed in offices, so that life could move on. Whichever the case, the two versions of the story coincide and reflect each other–they are somehow based on the sense of irrationality. Later on, in the 1980s, when Athens had turned into a large-scale city entailing the promise of a fast developing technocratic society, the National Garden inspired one of the best films in Greek cinema, the Rage (Mania), by Yiorgos Panousopoulos. The main character, Zoe, a young advertiser with an ideal everyday life, with children, a husband and with a rising career, is lost in search of a break in the Garden. Not even herself could have imagined her transformation that summer afternoon in the Garden, nor the paths she would follow chasing Pan and his followers, Bacchae, having left her child and husband outside the railings watching her with the police.

For the Stolen Goods series, Socratous wanders in the Garden stealing stories, narrations, roots, leaves, anything he can get hold of. He speaks with gardeners, observes the series of events, tries to distinguish the plants on which he will eventually focus and imprint on bronze, covering some of them in a gold or silver coat.

The final installations in the exhibition space carry everything he heard and felt: the inexplicable beauty of nature, the complaints of the gardeners, who will be laid off in the future from their temporary heaven, the Garden, the lust and pleasure of nightly visitors, the children’s purity and the reassuring drowsiness of pensioners, the fear of immigrants, the history of Greece, passing from monarchy to the so-called democracy and then to an excessive neo-liberalism, a new colonization, and so on.

The environments he creates are both worrying and hopeful, as is the National Garden today. Destruction and hope coexist.

Ruin, decline and misery take up the colour of the three precious metals, gold, silver and bronze, and reflect a fresh start. The one that might be initiated through our illustrious ruins.

να επιτευχθεί µόνο σε εγγύτητα µε το φυσικό περιβάλλον. «Ο κήπος», λέει ο Σωκράτους, «δεν χρησιµεύει τόσο ώστε να µπεις και να τον διασχίσεις για να φτάσεις κάπου γρήγορα, αλλά ως χώρος όπου µπορείς να περιπλανηθείς. Ο αρχικός σκοπός του κήπου ήταν να δηµιουργηθεί ένα ειδυλλιακό περιβάλλον, όπου µπορεί ο κάτοικος της πόλης να σκεφτεί, να ρεµβάσει, να ξεκουραστεί από την καθηµερινότητα και τον δηµόσιο βίο...». Με αυτή την έννοια, ο κήπος γίνεται η πλατφόρµα µέσα στην οποία κανείς µπορεί να αποποιηθεί, όπως αυτός φαντάζεται, τον δηµόσιο βίο –είτε φανερά στο κέντρο του είτε κρυµµένος πίσω από τις φυλλωσιές. Η έννοια του µυστηρίου είναι διάχυτη, έτσι όπως αντανακλάται από την παράλληλη

Ο κήπος είναι µια γωνιά προβολών αυτών που µπορούν, αλλά και αυτών που δεν µπορούν να γίνουν πραγµατικότητα, παρόλο που σχηµατίζονται σαν σκέψεις. Ταυτόχρονα, είναι µια terra incognita µε ερωτηµατικά και απαντήσεις που συνυπάρχουν και τροφοδοτούν την αστική ζωή τόσο µε µύθους και φαντασιώσεις όσο και µε µια απτή και ουσιαστική διέξοδο. Ο Χένρι Μίλερ γράφει χαρακτηριστικά για τον Εθνικό Κήπο το 1939: «Το πάρκο παραµένει στη µνήµη µου όσο κανένα άλλο πάρκο που έχω επισκεφτεί στη ζωή µου. Η πεµπτουσία ενός πάρκου είναι όπως όταν κάποιος κοιτά έναν πίνακα ή ονειρεύεται να βρίσκεται σε έναν τόπο που όµως δεν µπορεί ποτέ να πάει».

Ο Εθνικός Κήπος, ο οποίος παλιά ονοµαζόταν Βασιλικός Κήπος, οριοθετήθηκε το 1836 από τον Φρίντριχ φον Γκέρτνερ, τον αρχιτέκτονα των ανακτόρων, ύστερα από εντολή της βασίλισσας Αµαλίας. Θα αποτελούσε τόσο ιδιωτικό όσο και βοτανικό και επιστηµονικό κήπο. Στον Κήπο φυτεύτηκαν και συνυπήρχαν καλλωπιστικά φυτά, που είχαν έρθει από τη Γένοβα, αλλά και αυτοφυή είδη, που µεταφέρθηκαν από το Σούνιο και την Εύβοια. Στο χώµα του λοιπόν µεγάλωναν τόσο ουασιγκτόνιες όσο και ελιές, δάφνες, ροδιές, και έτσι όπως µπλέκονταν οι ρίζες τους κάτω από τη γη, η βλάστηση πύκνωνε. Ο Κήπος στα νεότερα χρόνια και µετά τη µοναρχία, έγινε σύµβολο εθνικής ταυτότητας, χρησιµοποιήθηκε και χρησιµοποιείται από παιδιά που ψάχνουν το παιχνίδι, συνταξιούχους που ενίοτε µαζεύονται να παίξουν τάβλι, µετανάστες που βρίσκουν καταφύγιο, νυχτερινούς επισκέπτες-κυνηγούς του «αγοραίου έρωτα», τουρίστες που ψάχνουν δροσιά, ενίοτε διανοούµενους που ψάχνουν έµπνευση και πολλούς άλλους –ποιος ξέρει ποιους. Σε αυτόν τον κήπο έλαβε χώρα ο αστικός µύθος του «δαγκώµατος της µαϊµούς» που λέγεται ότι άλλαξε την ιστορία της Ελλάδας και έφερε τη Μικρασιατική Καταστροφή. Στις 17 Σεπτεµβρίου του 1920, ο φιλοδηµοκρατικός και φιλοβενιζελικός Βασιλιάς Αλέξανδρος δαγκώθηκε από µια άρρωστη µαϊµού ενώ έκανε τη βόλτα του στον κήπο, και πέθανε λίγους µήνες µετά από σηψαιµία. Ήταν µόλις η Ελλάδα είχε βγει νικήτρια από τον Α’ Παγκόσµιο Πόλεµο µε τη συµµαχία των Αγγλογάλλων. Τον Βασιλιά Αλέξανδρο διαδέχτηκε ο εκθρονισµένος και γερµανόφιλος Βασιλιάς Κωνσταντίνος, οι Άγγλοι και οι Γάλλοι εγκατέλειψαν την Ελλάδα από τη µικρασιατική εκστρατεία, και µετά από εκεί, η Ελλάδα οδηγήθηκε σε έναν µεγάλο αριθµό νεκρών και προσφύγων λόγω της αναγκαστικής ανταλλαγής πληθυσµών, εφόσον χάθηκε η µάχη. Ίσως και να ήταν έτσι, ίσως και να χρειαζόταν να αποδοθούν οι ακρότητες και τα αίσχη του πολέµου στη λύσσα της αχαλίνωτης φύσης µέσα στο περιβάλλον του κήπου, και όχι στην πολιτική που χαράσσεται σε γραφεία, προκειµένου να συνεχιστεί η ζωή. Όπως και να έχει, οι δύο εκδοχές της ιστορίας συµπίπτουν και αντανακλούν η µια την άλλη –βασίζονται κατά κάποιον τρόπο στην έννοια του παραλογισµού. Αργότερα, στη δεκαετία

του 1980, κατά την οποία η Αθήνα έχει µετατραπεί πια σε µια µεγαλούπολη που εµπεριέχει την υπόσχεση µιας γρήγορα αναπτυσσόµενης τεχνοκρατικής κοινωνίας, ο Εθνικός Κήπος εµπνέει µια από τις καλύτερες ταινίες του ελληνικού κινηµατογράφου, τη Μανία του Γιώργου Πανουσόπουλου. Ο κύριος χαρακτήρας, η Ζωή, µια νέα διαφηµίστρια µε ιδανική καθηµερινότητα, παιδιά, σύζυγο και ανοδική καριέρα, χάνεται ψάχνοντας ανάπαυλα στον Κήπο. Ούτε η ίδια θα µπορούσε να φανταστεί τη µεταµόρφωσή της εκείνο το καλοκαιρινό απόγευµα µέσα στον Κήπο και τις διαδροµές που θα ακολουθούσε κυνηγώντας τον Πάνα και τις Βάκχες, έχοντας αφήσει το παιδί της και τον άνδρα της να την παρατηρούν από έξω από τα κάγκελα µαζί µε την αστυνοµία. Για την ενότητα Stolen Goods ο Σωκράτους περιπλανάται στον Κήπο και κλέβει ιστορίες, αφηγήσεις, ρίζες, φύλλα κι ό,τι άλλο µπορεί. Μιλά µε τους κηπουρούς, παρατηρεί τα δρώµενα, ψάχνει να ξεχωρίσει τα φυτά στα οποία τελικά και επικεντρώνεται και αποτυπώνει σε µπρούντζο κι έπειτα κάποια τα επιχρυσώνει ή τα επαργυρώνει. Οι τελικές εγκαταστάσεις στον εκθεσιακό χώρο µεταφέρουν όσα άκουσε και αισθάνθηκε: την ανεξήγητη οµορφιά της φύσης, τον καηµό των κηπουρών, που θα απολυθούν µελλοντικά από τον προσωρινό τους παράδεισο, τον Κήπο, την ερωτική επιθυµία και την ηδονή των βραδινών επισκεπτών, την παιδική αγνότητα και τον καθησυχαστικό λήθαργο των συνταξιούχων, τον φόβο των µεταναστών, την ιστορία της Ελλάδας που περνάει από τη µοναρχία στην υποτιθέµενη δηµοκρατία και µετά σε έναν υπέρµετρο νεοφιλελευθερισµό, µια νέα αποίκηση, και ούτω καθεξής. Τα περιβάλλοντα που δηµιουργεί είναι ταυτόχρονα ανησυχητικά και ελπιδοφόρα, όπως ο Εθνικός Κήπος σήµερα. Η καταστροφή και η ελπίδα συνυπάρχουν. Η κατάπτωση, ο ξεπεσµός και η εξαθλίωση παίρνουν το χρώµα των τριών πολύτιµων µετάλλων και αντανακλούν µια νέα ίσως αρχή που θα ξεκινήσει µέσα από τα «λαµπερά» µας ερείπια.

THE BREEDER Introduction to the work of Socratis Socratous

By Elena Parpa Socratis Socratous’ s artistic practice defies easy categorization. It encompasses a variety of media, including photography, installations, performance, and sculpture. It also involves a wide range of approaches and tactics. Although in much of his projects, he figures as a maker of objects with a special, almost instinctive relationship to materials, there is also a substantial body of work based on field research and quasi-anthropological or archival methods. There are also pieces where the artist emerges as a contemporary flaneur, wondering in the urban chaos or in liminal zones sometimes with a plan at hand and sometimes spontaneously without specific direction.

Yet within the artist’s wide ranging practice, there are some constants. There is his attraction, fascination even with destruction, demonstrated in projects, such as School (2008) or in his 2011 solo exhibition Inviolable Refuge. There is also his tendency to disrupt normalcy, like in his performance from 2000, when he intervened in the everyday life of a latex factory, stopping its standard production for a week, and collaborating with the workers during factory hours in order to create colourful paintings out of caoutchouc. Above all else, however, there is his intention for a poetic and political engagement with his environment, be it an urbanity (or a society) in crisis, like that of Athens, his city of residence, visually explored and critically dissected in a series of works since the early 2000s that culminated in his 2010 installation at the Benaki Museum, or a geography in conflict, like that of Cyprus, his country of origin.

The artist’s preoccupation with the island’s political quandary led to a multifaceted installation titled Rumours (2009), with which he represented the Republic of Cyprus at the Venice Biennale in 2009. The work addressed various issues, including that of immigration and rootlessness, identity and fear of the ‘other’ through a fabled story of carefully orchestrated symbolisms, inspired by the artist’s itinerary in the North of Cyprus following the partial lifting of the borders in 2003 that permitted the crossing to what had been for almost thirty years the inaccessible ‘other side’ for both Greek and Turkish Cypriots. Socratous’s travels across a landscape that was both familiar and strange, acquired the resonance of a personal revelation, which inspired him to question the prevalent political rhetoric surrounding the Cyprus conflict by fabricating a narrative -with palm trees, cobra snakes and boats as protagonists- that effectively addressed the usual tactics of myth-making and propaganda employed by both sides.

The artist continued to re-visit the island’s reality in works such as Blue Beret Camp (2011), a series of photographs taken in Nicosia’s buffer zone that recorded the everyday life of UN soldiers in an attempt to re-consider the presence and role of the peace-keeping force in Cyprus. In 2012, he traveled to Palestine, visiting equally contested and liminal zones. For a period of two months, he stayed at the village of Dhahiriya. The resulting project, A Cave in Dhahiriya (2012), was presented within the context of the Riwaq Biennial and

THE BREEDER took the form of a temporary museum, housed in a complex of subterranean caves and dedicated to the history of the village’s community. The museum exhibits included memorabilia and family photographs, objects and artefacts donated by the villagers and included in a display which addressed the complex ways that collective histories translate into subjective traumas and vice versa.

In his new series of sculptures titled Stolen Garden (2014), first presented at the Kunsthalle Athena in May 2014, Socratous is once again seeking to engage with a weighted actuality. He combines his inclination for objectmaking and craftsmanship with his interest in advancing his practice towards new critical ends in order to elaborate and reflect on the notion of the garden an idea that re-surfaces in his work since his early installation Garden and Thieves (1998)- against the charged socio- political climate prevailing in Athens, following the outburst of the financial crisis in 2007.

Although in less obvious and straightforward ways, the garden is a liminal zone, subject as well to competing historical, socio-cultural, and political formations. A piece of nature shaped and structured by human activity, the garden is a space that exists between the private and the public. In the geography of the home, it is the boundary that separates the inside from the outside world, while in the urban landscape it takes the form of a planned, usually enclosed space, intended for social recreation and interaction, controlled however by specific regulations and prohibitions bound by law.

Much in the same way that house gardens reveal a great deal about the intricacies of their owner’s nature, so do city gardens reflect a locality’s past and present, its former aspirations and current shortcomings.

Formerly known as the Royal Garden, the National Garden in Athens was commissioned by Queen Amalia in 1838 and designed by the German agronomist Frederick Schmidt with both indigenous and exotic plants. Its initial conceptualization finds its antecedent in the long-standing European practice, more vigorously pursued since the 17th century, of designing gardens adjacent to palaces meant to reflect the reigning status of the monarchy. When in the 1920s the garden was renamed, its representative function inevitably changed. No longer an emblem of the monarchy’s rule, its newly acquired title made it stand, like the ancient ruins in its vicinity, as symbol of a nation’s cultural identity.

In 2012, interested in exploring the cultural and political connotations of a garden with aspirations to represent the ‘national’, Socratous began to take long walks in the Garden’s alleys, cutting and collecting without permission twigs and leafs from plants considered indigenous, like the olive, the citrus and the pomegranate trees, used in antiquity to adorn the heads of Olympic champions. He later cast his stolen ‘loot’ in precious metals and displayed them on a piece of pristine white marble, the material of classical Greek sculpture par excellence, in a work titled Stolen (2012). THE BREEDER claims to a glorious past that laid the pillars of democracy in marble temples and agorae, was now brought to the brim of destruction by various acts of stealing.

In Stolen Garden (2014), Socratous is interested in exploring further this idea of the garden as an extension of civic life, and as a human, and therefore, cultural and political construct, vulnerable to numerous uses and misuses. His installation in the exhibition space reveals a landscape strewn with evidence of dereliction and decay. It is as if we are invited to walk inside a garden, after a fateful catastrophe, where twig- looking bronze sculptures bear the menacing appearance of threatening guns and flowers laid strategically on the floor look like grenades ready to explode. It is a disquieting environment, where the garden seizes to be a secluded refuge for reverie with life following its natural cycle and becomes a battleground, a field of destruction. What could be the meaning of such an apocalyptic scenery?

Like in his previous works, Socratous works against conventional notions of artistic composition and display, exploits a variety of material, presented as wrecked, decayed or destroyed, reworking the language of sculpture in relation to a specific socio-political context, evoked through a series of symbolic connotations. The garden he builds is intended as an alarming prophetic vision of a city’s possible future in the aftermath of a terrible crisis that is economic, but also social, cultural, even existential. What is more, the garden as a National Garden, where one can stroll, marvel and feel pride for the deeds of the nation represented in designed nature, imported exotic species, commissioned monuments, and ruins of a glorious antiquity, is heavily interrogated. It is an idea that in Socratous’s installation resonates as an emptied unsustainable myth just like the myth of Athens as the birthplace of democracy can no longer comfort or disillusion its inhabitants. Instead, it becomes a relic like his bronze sculptures appear as remnants of a garden (or of a city) in ruins.
