We are extremely excited to have you join us for the world premiere of Cleopatra. Tonight’s performance is our most ambitious and immersive dance theater experience to date. As you sit back and take in the show, imagine yourself walking through an ancient ruin, or strolling through a museum that features artifacts from a time long ago. The dancers and their actions in the blank space before you represent the scenarios we create in our heads as we attempt to place ourselves in the past. It’s impossible to rid ourselves of our modern perspective as we ‘try on’ the lives of historical figures. We ask ourselves, “What would I have done in their place? Are they good or evil? How do they compare to the political figures of today?” But there are no concrete answers to these questions because real people are, and have always been, unique, richly complex and a product of their environment. These stories take place within a culture that has some shocking similarities to our own, along with some disturbingly brutal differences. Try not to pass judgment from the lens of today. Let the experience roll over you like a dream as your imagination takes the reigns. Enjoy.
TERPSICORPS THEATRE OF DANCE
Heather Maloy – Artistic Director
& Resident Choreographer
Michele Bryan - Managing Director
Christopher Bandy – Ballet Master
As North Carolina’s beloved summertime contemporary ballet company, Terpsicorps brings together critically acclaimed performers from renowned ballet companies across the US and abroad to share their tremendous gifts with our audiences. These dancers bring their amazing technical skill and dramatic talents to choreography that is both physically challenging and artistically significant. A core goal of the company is to create innovative, thought-provoking and entertaining performances of the highest professional caliber.
Over the past 20 years, Terpsicorps has premiered over 30 original works and breathed life into the choreography of the late Salvatore Aiello. There have been collaborations with musicians, visual artists, actors, food banks, social causes and of course dancers. Young dancers have passed through the apprenticeship and internship programs and gone on to be professional dancers, choreographers, teachers and arts administrators. Having Heather Maloy in the community teaching the dancers of tomorrow has shone light upon the path to fulfill their dreams.
Thank you for being the most important part of Terpsicorps, our audience. Dance is experiential and fleeting. What you see tonight lives on in you. Enjoy!

Over the past 20 years, Terpsicorps has been able to present work of the quality you are witnessing first hand tonight because of the generosity of people, businesses and foundations who believe in our vision. They understand the benefits that having access to stimulating works of art brings to our communities.
To pay homage to those whose generosity has been the lifeblood of Terpsicorps for all of these years, here is a list of supporters, past and present, who have made substantial, game changing donations to this organization. Without their belief in us, we would not be celebrating our 20th Anniversary today.

Yet even with all of these names, there is so much room for more. As we have grown to include additional, much needed, staff members, our budget has grown right along with it. Inflation affects our performance costs as much as it affects your grocery bill. Fabric and wood are through the roof, and it is time to pay our dancers more for bringing their incomparable talents to NC to share with our audiences. 01. HEATHER MALOY (FOUNDER, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, RESIDENT CHOREOGRAPHER) is thrilled to be celebrating 20 years of being at the helm of Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance. She has created 30 original works for Terpsicorps, including four full evening length ballets. Many of these have included collaboration with musicians, composers, artists and projectionists. Heather received her training at the North Carolina School of the Arts (NCSA). She began her professional career when she joined the North Carolina Dance Theatre (NCDT), now known as the Charlotte Ballet, at the age of 17, making her at that time the youngest dancer to be hired as a full company member in the company’s history. Heather stayed for thirteen years, dancing principal and soloist roles. Mentored by NCDT artistic director, Salvatore Aiello, she choreographed her first professional work when she was only nineteen. After Aiello’s death, his successor, Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, commissioned her to create five more pieces for NCDT. Heather has also created a premiere for the Carolina Ballet, two for the Chautauqua Ballet, three for the Nashville Ballet and one work each for the Wake Forest and Jacksonville College Dance Departments. She has participated in the National Choreographer’s Initiative, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet’s Choreoplan and the Ballet Nouveau Colorado (now Wonderbound) 21st Century Choreography Competition. She has also had the honor to return to UNCSA (formerly NCSA) to create a new work for the Spring Dance program and to stage her work “Le Suil Go…” for their 2007 alumni performance in Manteo, NC.
02. Michele Bryan (Managing Director) proudly joins Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance following 10 years of working in Asheville as the community liaison for the Go Local Card, along with other development positions focused on relationship building. She was born and raised in Atlanta, and with her father’s family being native to Asheville, she’s been a part of the community since 1970. Her lifelong love of the arts was born when she began ballet classes at age 3 at the Atlanta School of Ballet followed by extensive training in ice skating and dance. She’s been an ardent supporter of Terpsicorps from day one. While attending performances by the NC Dance Theatre in Charlotte in the 90’s, she developed a deep appreciation for Terpsicorps’ artistic director Heather Maloy as a performer. They became more closely acquainted when Heather taught Michele’s daughter dance in Asheville. Michele’s regular attendance at performances in both Asheville and WinstonSalem, as well as her standing as a donor and volunteer, exemplify her passion for Terpsicorps today. Michele has worn many hats professionally all of which will contribute highly to the future growth and success of Terpsicorps. A published local non-fiction writer, co-founder of a non-profit and a family fiduciary, she brings all of this experience and skill to the Terpsicorps team. Even more crucial is her passion for the arts, Terpsicorps in particular, and her undaunted commitment to enhancing the lives of the citizens of NC through dance.
