Kendal Chapman ‘22 elected vice president By Celia Young editor

The single vice presidential candidate running in Thursday’s special election, Kendal Chapman ’22, was elected last night by a vote of 120 in favor to 36 votes of no confidence. Seventy students wrote in other candidates and 10 abstained in the vote. Chapman answered questions from both The Brandeis Hoot and the Justice on Tuesday evening in the Shapiro Campus Center Multi-Purpose Room. No members of the student body attended the debate. “On the whole I’m very excited to get started,” said Chapman in an interview with The Hoot after her election. “I’m excited to meet with committee chairs… figure out what my style is going to be and just to get to know everyone.” Chapman has served on both the Senate and the Executive Board, starting on the Student Union in her first year—experiences she said prepare her for the role of vice president, a position responsible for communicating between Union branches and presiding over Senate meetings. Chapman said on Tuesday that

she hopes to create accountability in the Senate, clarify senator responsibilities and change the student body’s perception of the Union. Chapman hopes to portray the Union as a resource to the Brandeis community by engaging in more outreach, like with Union social media pages. “The Union is seen in a very negative light,” said Chapman, “They [the student body] doesn’t know what we’re doing and how we can help them.” The vice presidency opened up after the previous vice president, Guillermo Caballero ’20, resigned effective Nov. 1. Caballero’s resignation came after he and Senior Representative to the Board of Trustees Zosia Busé ’20 brought complaints against Student Union President Simran Tatuskar ’21 to the Student Union Judiciary, according to an earlier article by The Hoot. Chapman also wants to encourage students to come to Senate meetings to help create accountability. She said that she recognizes that the Union has faced conflict between branches and members in the past, such as the recent judiciary case, and wants to improve communication to diminish conflict.

Brandeis released the results of its second ever campus climate survey on Thursday, which described respondents’ experiences with rape, sexual assault, harassment, intervention in those situations and reporting. The survey asked 1,148 students—or about 22 percent of the student body—about their experiences with harassment, sexual misconduct, knowledge of how to report harassment or assault, sense of community, bystander intervention and confidence in Brandeis responding to a crisis. “What the survey shows about sexual harassment and misconduct is disturbing and deeply troubling,” University President Ron Liebowitz wrote in an email to the Brandeis student body re-

leasing the 237 page report. “The results remind us that preventing sexual assault and supporting survivors requires the focused work of all of us… importantly, they show how those in our community who belong to groups who have historically experienced more violence in our society are more likely to experience sexual violence, and are less likely to report it.” The survey details that while 158 undergraduates and 21 graduate students who completed the survey had been raped, only 13 percent of undergraduates formally reported the rape and the number of graduate students who formally reported was too low for the survey to say. “I want people to be angry reading this report,” said Provost Lisa Lynch in an interview with The Brandeis Hoot. “This is a problem that everyone on this campus has to engage with.” See CLIMATE, page 4

Univ. working to fundraise, increase donor pool By Victoria Morrongiello staff

Senior Vice President of Institutional Advancement Zamira Korff is leading a new campaign for university fundraising to foster new generations of support for Brandeis’ budget. In the most recent faculty senate meeting on Nov. 1, Korff proposed that the university switch its targeted au-

dience to alumni, international relations—potential donors from abroad—and the next generation rather than being dependent on trustees for donations, as Brandeis has been in the past. The university has a legacy of dependency on trustees, said Korff, which has been great, but has also become too much of a safety net. “From the start to really to today, we had such a heavy reli-

ance on our founder’s friends and trustees that we failed to explore new opportunities, and we failed to engage our alumni,” said Korff in the faculty meeting. Korff crafted a three-part plan which arranges the steps the university should take to foster a new generation of support. The first step is connecting with untapped cohorts and networks, said Korff,
