National ID: PSA Asks Recipients to Print and Laminate
Story by Angel Mae Panganiban
Amidst the allocation of billions of funds for the implementation of PhilSys in Lipa City, Batangas, concerns have been raised regarding the effectiveness and accuracy of the program's implementation as discrepancies emerged, with one resident receiving instructions to download and print their national ID while another resident received a PhilSys card via mail, according to reports on April 1, 2023.
Two residents of Lipa City in Batangas have recently experienced conflicting instructions regarding the implementation of the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys), the government's national ID program.
“Nagulat ako kasi hindi naman ganoon 'yung sa kumare ko. Physical card talaga siya,” the first resident interviewed, who requested to remain anonymous, shared.
As per the account of the concerned individual, she has reported to have received a text message notifying that her PhilSys ID was readily available for download online. The website further provided instructions for her to print a copy of the ID and subsequently laminate it for added durability.
On the other hand, another Lipa resident shared that she received her
actual PhilSys Card. She said that the process was smooth and easy, and that the card arrived within months of her registration.
“Mabilis ko lang nakuha sa PSA tapos card mismo,” she claimed.
Consequently, the Philippine Statistical Authority has resorted to issuing temporary PhilSys cards on paper as they struggle to provide plastic identification cards to the 74.3 million registered Filipinos, highlighting the challenges in implementing the program nationwide and emphasizing the conflicting experiences encountered by the residents.
Dennis Mapa, NEDA Undersecretary and National Statistician, then assured in his interview with Inquirer last October 2022 that paper IDs would have the same benefits as the plastic cards.
“We believe that it is about time to join competitions and represent our school to let students experience the tense, joy, and excitement of once again joining competitions as they raise the University flag,” Mr. Edmund Caraos, UBLC HS Department assistant principal said.
Karibok ang Tuktok
Despite the school’s first time raising the university’s flag for the A.Y. 2022–2023, the University of Batangas Lipa City (UBLC) High School Department was able to bag 5th place in the whole competition against more than 20 participating schools in the UP Batangan’s 41st installation of Karibok ang Tuktok.
“The university has always been committed to forming students holistically, and one way to do that is through participating in an online contest—Karibok ang Tuktok,” Caraos declared.
The 41st installation of Karibok ang Tuktok, with the theme “Talino at Talentong Batangas Para sa Katotohanan,” was organized by the UP Batangan. From November 18 to December 3, the event hosted a series of competitions to empower Batangueño youth amidst propagation of several issues observed before and during the current administration.
“After reviewing the different competitions and guidelines, we identify first the possible coaches that could train our students, then they choose students who can represent our school,” Mr. Caraos explained.
After several screenings and eliminations, UBLC was finally represented by students from Junior High School (JHS) and Senior High School (SHS) Department.
“This group is composed of the best of the best; best coaches and best students,” he asserted.

Interschool Virtual Skills Competition
On December 7, 2022, the College of Entrepreneurship, Tourism, Hospitality, and Real Estate Management hosted an Interschool Virtual Skills Competition where UBians also arose triumphant.

thought that having decorations for each classroom was an effective way of doing so; but [...], the Office and SG opted to instead have it as a competition with a challenge-to use only recyclable materials,” SG President Garcia said.
The school's janitorial staff found discarded materials such as cardboard, plastic bottles, and old newspapers scattered throughout the campus. The event also caused frustration among teachers and students, with some coming back the next day to continue cleaning up the mess that accumulated from the decorations.
“Unfortunately due to very short notice, the SG was not able to attend to such needs. We were only informed [by] afternoon of December 21, and some were already out of town since it was already vacation. Of course, we still secured a way to solve the problem. Some of the class presidents and other class officers were able to help. We really thank them for their immediate and effective response,” Garcia clarified.
In light of the incident, the UBLC HS Office and Student Government have taken measures to prevent similar situations from happening in the future.
They have ordered the repainting of walls and urged the students to be more mindful of their actions during events like these.

UBLC Project 9 to tighten security
Story by Mikaella Eunice Caraig
University of Batangas Lipa City (UBLC) security head Jimmy Laguitan stated that the Security and Safety Office had already submitted a proposal for another Project 9 in a face-to-face interview on November 29, 2022.
The university has been implementing the project even before the COVID-19 pandemic. This is one of the security measures of the school to reduce parents’ worries regarding their children’s whereabouts through keeping track of UBians’ log-in details.
“Ang Standard Operating Procedure o SOP natin, upon in and out, mag-ta-tap ka. Iyon ay para halimbawa, kayo ay nakabihis lang sa bahay na nakasuot na ng uniform, si Nanay, iche-check ang anak kung pumapasok ba, pupunta lang siya sa amin dito at ipiprint ng IT ‘yang records mo, at doon makikita kung pumasok ka nga ba o hindi,” Laguitan explained.
(Our Standard Operating Procedure or SOP, upon in and out, you tap. That is for example, you are just dressed at home already wearing a uniform and a parent will then check if the child is really attending the class, she will just come here and then IT will already print your records, and there, it will be seen whether you really went to school or not).
However, one of the concerns that they are facing is that students who are being dropped inside the school premises by their guardians are not able to get their IDs scanned through Project 9, as the system is only located at the entrance of the campus.
He responded, “Kapag nagmemeeting kami with the vice president of Academic Affairs, pinag-iisipan namin na lalagyan namin ng isa pang Project 9 from building A to building B—‘yun ang pinopropose ko ngayon.”
(When we are meeting with the vice president of Academic Affairs, we are thinking that we will put another Project 9 from building A to building B—that is what I am proposing now.)
Although they are still waiting for the approval of such a project, Laguitan noted that the Security and Safety Office had already laid out their plans to ensure the safety of students for the S.Y. 2022-2023.

Lipa City Soars to 17th spot in PH Competitiveness Index
Lipa City makes significant strides in the 2022 Philippine Competitive Index, jumping from 24th place to 17th out of 113 component cities. The ranking is based on five convergent pillars: Economic Dynamism, Government Efficiency, Infrastructure, Resiliency, and Innovation.
In the 2022 Philippine Competitive Index, Lipa City performs well in Economic Dynamism, ranking 12th, and in Infrastructure, placing 15th. Additionally, the city ranks 19th in Innovation and 42nd in Government Efficiency. However, the city's disaster preparedness and resilience are lacking as it falls to a low 97th spot in the Resiliency pillar.
In comparison, Batangas City placed 14th in the province category, with Rizal, Cavite, and Davao del Norte taking the top three spots. In the highly urbanized cities category, Quezon City retained its top spot, followed by Manila and Pasay.
Lipa City is already known for its convenient and comfortable lifestyle, due to its modern amenities and technological advancements. Potential investors and locals can expect to see even more growth in the future, as the city is working on several additional projects and plans to improve its ranking in the annual City and Municipal Competitiveness Index by 2023.
In a recent interview with a local
business owner, insights were shared about the highly competitive environment in Lipa. With the presence of numerous businesses in the area, the competition for customers and market share is intense.
As a business owner, Rogie Panganiban, who owns a garden and landscaping business, shared his thoughts on the challenges and opportunities of operating in such a competitive environment.
“Minsan ay nakakatakot ang kompetisyon sa lipa dahil kinakailangan na ang negosyo ko ay magbigay ng kalidad na serbisyo pero sa kabilang banda naman ay okay na saakin dahil kung malaki ang kompetisyon, maraming customers at maraming kita,” said Mr. Rogie
Despite the challenges, the business owner remains optimistic about the future of their business in Lipa.
With the right strategy and approach, he believes that there are ample opportunities to stand out in a crowded market and attract customers.

UBLC successfully hosts open house event after four-year hiatus
Last March 03, UBLC reopened its doors to guests and schools from the Province of Batangas, after a hiatus of four years from its last open house activity.
The campus tour showcased newly improved facilities and renovated areas, including the canteen, multi-purpose hall, and specialized facilities for the Tourism and Hospitality Management programs.
Dr. Mayling Ilagan-Capuno, Dean of the College of Information, Technology, Entertainment and Communication (CITEC), emphasized that an educational institution is more than just its program offerings.
"An open house will showcase more than the facilities and structures. It will give the students a “feel” of the campus, the vibes, and the culture," she said.
Prior to welcoming the 19 participating schools, the ushers from the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management, conducted a tour of UBLC's college departments for the bona fide grade 12 UBIAN
students. Each department carried out activities, presented exhibits, and gave presentations highlighting the unique projects and services of each program offered by UBLC in their respective fields.
According to Roxanne Ilagan,a third-year BS Financial Management student from the College of Business, Accountancy, and Auditing (CBAA), the college departments have prepared and considered games connected to the department they represent.
"The students have participated in the game inside the Bank of UBians, which is related to what the CBAA has to offer,” she added.
The College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) also corresponded their activity with their department, setting up an airsoft shooting range along with fingerprint testing and analysis.
After the campus tour with the bona fide students, the guests from the participating schools were welcomed into the campus, with UBLC's AIpowered receptionist KettyBot helping to usher them in.
The open house activity of the university was then officially opened at the gymnasium, where the guests, students, and faculty members were gathered. Dr. Hernando B. Perez, the University President, commenced the program by giving his welcoming remarks.
“Ako po ay natutuwa at nakarating kayo rito sa University of Batangas Lipa City Campus. UBLC: Unlocked, ibig-sabihin bukas ang pinto ng UBLC upang makita ninyo kung anong mga kaganapan dito sa UBLC,” Dr. Perez stated.

Unleashing the Future Leaders: Lipa City Youth Gears Up for Exciting Training Program
Story by Moriah Gepolla
In an effort to empower the youth leaders of Lipa City, the City Community Affairs Office has organized an upcoming training program aimed at providing aspiring leaders with an opportunity to unleash their potential and contribute to their community.
The program is set to take place in the second half of the year, with specific dates and locations to be announced by the local government in due course.
"The training program will be similar to last year's proposal, but with exciting additions," said Chrismela Medrano, a proud Ubian and member of the organization.
Medrano emphasized that aspiring youth leaders must be socially active, possess a driven personality, and effective listening and speaking skills to succeed.
"This organization is not just about owning titles under government names, but
about being flexible and making a positive impact on the community," she added.
The program will include advanced training sessions, focusing on leadership styles, strategies for self-improvement, and the acquisition of wisdom and knowledge.
In the past, the organization has successfully completed various immersions and programs. This includes the Cleanup Drives at Brgy. Halang, feeding programs, and the podcast "YCO-MUNIKA: THE PODCAST," that aimed at creating awareness and advocating for positive change.
Medrano highlights that the training program will provide aspiring youth leaders with opportunities to learn and grow, not just as leaders who enforce regulations but as leaders who inspire change and make a difference.
As the local government prepares to announce official dates for the training program, the youth leaders of Lipa City are gearing up with excitement and anticipation, ready to stride towards a better future for themselves and their community.
As part of its CES initiatives, UBLC has introduced new food stalls inside the cafeteria.
These stalls are owned and operated by local shop owners, such as Lady Arya's Fried Noodles.
This collaborative approach not only provides students and faculty with a diverse and exciting dining experience but also empowers local entrepreneurs by giving them a platform to showcase their culinary skills and expand their businesses.

Calls for action grow as the Philippines faces threats to press freedom with over 200 cases of attacks against journalists reported.
The Philippines ranks 136th out of 180 countries in the 2021 World Press Freedom Index, with 213 cases of attacks against media workers since President Rodrigo Duterte took office in 2016, including 19 killings, released by the Reporters Sans Frontière (Reporters Without Borders).
“The Philippines is one of the world’s deadliest countries for journalists – as seen most shockingly when 32 reporters were massacred in the southern province of Maguindanao in 2009 – and impunity for these crimes is almost total,” the RSF affirmed.
While the government has taken some steps to protect journalists, including the creation of a task force to investigate media killings, critics say that more needs to be done to address the root causes of attacks on the media, such as impunity for perpetrators and the lack of
accountability for those in power.
“Journalism is the best vaccine against disinformation,” RSF secretarygeneral Christophe Deloire stated.
“Unfortunately, its production and distribution are too often blocked by political, economic, technological and, sometimes, even cultural factors,” he added.
Media outlets, in addition to journalists on the front lines, are facing pressure and intimidation from those in power, with several critical organizations, including ABS-CBN network, being forced to shut down in 2020 due to the government's crackdown on its policies.
Amidst challenges, journalists and media workers relentlessly persevere to uphold press freedom and deliver precise information to the public, as evidenced by the trending hashtag #FreePressPH on social media platforms, which many have been using to voice their support and spread awareness about the ongoing threats faced by journalists in the country.

EDITORIAL
As we return to conducting face-to-face classes, a wave of controversy came ashore regarding how LGBTQIA+ students should dress themselves in regards to the restrictive dress codes that prohibits them from expressing their gender. The Department of Education (DepEd) reiterated the strict implementation of DepEd Order No. 32, s. 2017 or the “Gender Responsive Basic Education Policy” in all elementary and high schools nationwide in order to protect them from all forms of gender-related violence, abuse, exploitation, discrimination and bullying, and to promote gender equality and non-discrimination in all governance levels. However, this remains a problem on campus.
.In the 21st century era, it is quite disappointing that the topic of gender and development seems to still be disregarded as if it’s not an issue that has been existing for a long time now. People say that they are accepting the LGBTQIA+ community in the society and yet, they are the ones who suppress them.
They like to believe the idea that they are crushing the gender discrimination that happens around them, but at the same time, they do not allow these individuals to freely express themselves however they want.
Despite the seminars and lectures that teachers had to attend in the first quarter of the academic year 2022-2023, it still wasn’t sufficient to “promote” gender and development amongst the university.
A lot of activities during that first half of the year were integrated with that aforementioned subject and yet, it is quite ironic that it is the administration itself who cannot implement it. If they cannot allow a fully-transitioned woman to dress femininely, then how can the students expect them to actually put those words into action?
It is time that they practice what they preach, and not only do these

Furthermore, I do agree that dress codes exist for a purpose, however, it wouldn’t hurt anyone to allow a transwoman to wear what other women would wear. It wouldn’t be a disturbance to allow them to wear a skirt instead of trousers. So what if they want to dress femininely (or masculinely)? As long as they are not causing any trouble within school grounds, then maybe the administration could consider it to be allowed.
The second boat is small and frail, barely more than a raft. The crew is illtrained and ill-equipped, and they struggle to stay afloat. They are tossed and turned by the waves, and they are battered by the winds. They have no compass or map, and they have no idea where they are going. They are at the mercy of the storm, and they know that they might not make it through the night.
Yet, they both are in the same storm, the same tempest that rages around them. They both face the same dangers and the
Our Education System Needs to Adapt to its Presentday Students

Students all over the world were affected by the pandemic named COVID-19.
Ever since the pandemic started around early 2020, students had to adjust to their new environment– the online class setup. Many were able to discover their true selves during the pandemic whilst others lost themselves on the way. In the end though, we once again have to adjust to our old environment– the face-to-face class setup.
same challenges, but their experiences are vastly different.
The grand vessel represents those who have the resources, the knowledge and the access, the ones who have the privilege to navigate the storms of life. They have the means to protect themselves and to overcome the challenges that come their way. On the other hand, the small raft represents those who are struggling, the ones who are left behind, the ones who are marginalized and oppressed. They are in the same storm, but they are not on the same boat.
As we look at the two boats, we can see the stark reality of the world we live in, a world where some are privileged and others are left to struggle. The storm is a metaphor for the challenges and obstacles that we all face in life, but for some, the storm is much harder to weather.
It is true that, just like a small raft, these communities are vulnerable to being left behind and forgotten by society. However, it is important to recognize that this is not an inevitable fate. It is the result of a deeply rooted system that perpetuates inequality and injustice.
Marginalized communities are not doomed to be overwhelmed by the storm. They can rise above their circumstances and overcome the challenges they face. They just need the support, resources, and opportunities to do so.
It is through collaboration and partnership that we can create a society where all communities can flourish and no one is left behind on a small raft waiting to be rescued.
The same storm, but not on the same boat, serves as a reminder that we must work towards a more equitable and just society, dismantle the systems of oppression that keep these communities down and build a society that values diversity, inclusivity, and equity, where everyone has the chance to navigate the storm and reach the safety of the shore.
about mental health here: With the education system we have now, students are more likely to get depressed and anxious in school. I have noticed that some students, especially younger ones, had difficulty focusing on their schoolworks and lessons, and the fact that the school system almost never changed aside from the fact that they use new technology doesn’t help.
With that said, I believe that schools should give their students at least a 1-week break in any (or if not any, at least a certain point of time) point in their school year in case they feel overwhelmed or tired with school. I believe that this could help the student accomplish unfinished schoolworks, or give them a peace of mind, not worrying about school for once.
General mental health breaks are great as well, however, I believe that it is too short and that it does not fit everyone. Some still want to go to school during the break and some still have a lot of schoolworks to do even if the break has ended.

They are not asking for an exemption. They are asking for respect. A respect for the fact that they have already made the decision to transition, and not allowing them to freely express themselves as the gender that they transitioned to is simply preposterous. It is downright offensive, or rather insulting, that the school itself does not respect that decision. If people cannot face and challenge this current situation that the LGBTQIA+ students have to deal with every single day, then it’s likely that they’ll end up drowning in the sea of binary and gendered dress codes that reflects on the university’s stand on gender and development.
Due to the difficulty of the situation caused by a virus that is way beyond humans’ control, us people had to change. However, schools haven’t changed that much– at least, to me. Yes, schools have adapted to technology; but have schools adapted to its students? I do not think it is so.
As a student myself, I believe that schools need to adapt more to students in terms of schedule, workload, as well as breaks. I heard that school is supposed to be a “one size fits all”, but what’s the catch here? Schools do not fit everyone. Schools still only give the same homework, the same activities, teach the same things at a certain point of time even if many students find it almost impossible to do and understand.
Now I would like to add something
Yes, winter breaks and semester breaks do exist, but many students use those breaks to spend time with their families. Family time is important and I agree with that as well, but I believe that students need alone time. Alone time is important as well for the students as they need to take a break from people in order to focus on their own well-being– however, to me, it is very difficult to do so in this era.
Another thing I would like to add is that alternative homeworks, activities and seatworks should be given as well if needed for the sake of the student. After all, students go to school to learn, right? Many people I have talked to do not remember their past lessons because of the fact that they mostly focused on finishing their work before or on the deadline.
I believe that if these will be implemented, this will be of great help to many students struggling with school. This will also help school be more accessible to everyone, and students will be able to truly learn and unlock their potential.

Trolling in the Deep
Enigmatic Maven
ALESSANDRA LEOPE
In the deep and vast ocean that is the internet, it's easy to cast a line and hook onto someone. The anonymity that comes with online interactions can make it tempting to troll and be mean to others, but we must remember that this behavior is not acceptable.
With just a few clicks, one can find themselves in the depths of forums, social media, and video-sharing platforms. Unfortunately, with this accessibility comes the risk of encountering trolls - those who are hungry for attention, chaos, and trouble. Trolling is a form of cyber bullying. It occurs when a user says offensive things to someone on the other side of the screen. From disrespectful comments, to obnoxious “pranks”- anything annoying, name it and they do it.
According to Statista research, trolls can be found on various online platforms, with 38% of them lurking on social media and 23% on video-sharing sites.. Sometimes, trolls could also be seen on forums, chat rooms, and even online games. In short, trolls are ruining a user’s online experience.
But that is not the case for everyone. Yimin Chen, a PhD candidate in Library and Information Science at Western University, shared his own experience with online

trolls. He stated that his understanding of trolling is all about “joking, teasing, and things you do with friends''. Chen interviewed avid Internet users, and received mixed responses about trolls. Some of them associated online trolls with the words “harmful, serious, and criminal acts like hacking or bullying” while others used to think that trolls are just “having fun”.
Additionally, trolls fuel hate and bullying online. It has a domino effect.
Once it starts, it never stops. Take Taylor Swift as an example. Since she began

They’re willing to pay that large sum of money to manipulate information online.
If people are spending a lot of time on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, they’ve probably heard about the DDS (Diehard Duterte Supporter/s) and the DIlawans (Aquino Supporters).
But there is hope. Media and information literacy can help combat the negative effects of trolling by promoting critical thinking, responsible behavior, and ethical use of information. It is a key skill that enables individuals to navigate the
information available on the internet and make informed decisions.
MIL can help individuals recognize the signs of trolling and identify harmful content online. It can also teach individuals how to verify information and identify fake news, which is often spread by trolls. By promoting media and information literacy, we can create a more informed and responsible online community that values respect and empathy towards others.
It’s crazy how a troll can do so much to influence people’s lives. Trolling is now embedded in this generation’s internet culture, and we can’t really escape it.
Who would’ve thought that trolls are mere users who just learned to feed on attention? Media and information literacy is needed more than ever to combat a world full of irresponsible and incompetent media users and content creators.
So, let's dive deep into the vast ocean of information available on the internet and promote media and information literacy to combat the trolls lurking in its depths.

Iam writing to inquire about a concerning matter at our school. I have noticed that some teachers are teaching subjects that are not included in their specialization or forte. I am curious to know why the school allows this to happen.
I believe that this school promised students for quality education, I just want to ask if it is effective to assign teachers to teach subjects that they are not qualified to teach. Thank you.
Dear Ms. Quismundo,
Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. As the Editor-in-Chief of our school publication, I understand your concerns regarding the qualifications of our teachers and their ability to effectively teach subjects that fall outside their area of specialization.
It is important to note that school administrations often assign teachers to teach courses that may not be their primary area of expertise due to a variety of factors such as budget constraints, teacher shortages, and scheduling conflicts. However, it is also the responsibility of the school to ensure that these teachers receive adequate training and support to teach these subjects effectively.
I would encourage you to speak with the school administration or guidance counselors to discuss your concerns further. They may be able to provide additional information on the qualifications and training of our teachers, as well as any steps being taken to ensure that students receive a quality education. Hopefully, this wouldn't be the case for the following school year.
Thank you for taking an interest in this important matter, and for being an active member of our school community.
Sincerely, Alessandra Leope.

entitled to invade their privacy. Essentially even personages who enjoy the limelight are still entitled to keep certain areas of their life away from public scrutiny and exposure.
But this begs the question: If these athletes are willing to give away their time on social media platforms such as Instagram or Twitter then why should fans be denied access to them personally? Moreover, fans are the reason athletes are paid their salaries; so, why should they have their hands tied and not be able to interact with their idols as much as
The life of a public figure is oftentimes described as an open book. The issue circulating about Choco Mucho's players' have become the buzz of the internet. The incident began with a video originating from a TikTok user who posted recordings of their glimpses of the volleyball stars before the Choco Mucho Flying Titans’ (CMFT) team's departure. The video shows the CMFT members, including Deanna Wong and Bea de Leon, who seem to just walk past and snub their fans even though they were cheerfully and warmly greeting them.
Nevertheless, obviously I’ve been a fan of many people for most of my life— from musicians to celebrities to politicians— and I've always admired the fact that these people are able to run off into seclusion and enjoy their own personal time away from anyone else. They can go somewhere where no one knows who they are or what they do or say, but are still able to be themselves when they come back out into the world again. And if you're an athlete, you have that kind of freedom too. They're human beings just like us, and they deserve the same respect as any other person on Earth: privacy.
Moreover, the verbal and social abuse that CMFT players have gotten from many, if not most, Filipino netizens is simply outrageous. While the encounter could have definitely been handled better, spiteful remarks and comments that have put the players, their team, and their management in jeopardy are utterly misplaced and I feel sorry for them and their privacy.
As a fan, you should always stick in your head that you cannot demand someone to come to you, reciprocally welcome you, or say hello back to you, regardless of whether they are a public figure, a celebrity, or not. They have never been responsible for it. Moreover, in relation to personal space, as a fan one should understand the very common sense and basic concept of privacy. Regardless of how avid and supportive you are to your idols, you are not in any way

Of course, a professional athlete's job is to perform at the highest level possible, and they are paid handsomely for doing so. But, when we pay our bills with sweat and blood, we deserve to get what's ours: a private trip that doesn't have to be recorded for the world to see. And if we're lucky enough to have some time off, a few days in which we can recharge our batteries and clear our minds by doing things like... going on vacation? Taking out the trash? Sitting on an airplane seat next to someone wearing a T-shirt that says "I love this or that]"?
That's our right as consumers, and it's your responsibility as an employer to provide us with that right. I mean, the squad was on their private vacation, supposedly to take a little holiday following their 2022 PVL season. Never were they there for a meet-and-greet. They were there for their personal space.
I don’t mean that they should be able to ignore fans, or pretend they don’t exist. But, a simple gesture of respect for their personal time can go a long way and exemplify your true support as a fan.
As fans, we may feel a sense of connection and admiration towards our idols, but that doesn't give us the right to invade their privacy or pry into their personal lives. So please don't take it too personally if these athletes don't come running over when you call—and if you're feeling particularly generous, maybe consider paying for some private seats so you can sit next to each other without having everyone around staring like they're waiting for something amazing.
Believe me, when the moment and circumstances are appropriate, your idols will offer you their time and attention.

After six long years as high school students, seniors are frequently confronted with the dilemma of what job route to pursue in the following years. This is because everyone is aware of how crucial a person’s career decision is in determining their level of success in life. However, along with this circumstance are other factors that influence an individual’s decisions about which path to take—one of these is the influence of parents who believe they have the authority to dictate the “right” career for their children because they believe they know what is best for them.
Some contend that it is the responsibility of parents to make sure their children are prepared for successful careers that will allow them to be financially comfortable and possibly lead fulfilling lives. Alongside this, unwise decisions can be made if parents’ practical advice is not present. Such assurance continues to hold true since parents have a crucial role in their children’s decisionmaking. However, it is difficult to overlook the reality that parents have embraced concepts about success (i.e., how to be successful, and what accounts for a “good work” or “perfect life”) since they pass these beliefs and/or experiences on to their children.
It is true that every teen should be appreciative of their parents because they have gone through and are still going through a lot of hardships in order to give them a life that is healthy and happy. While parents are driven with the belief that they are leading their children towards a fruitful life, such notion does not give them the right to choose a “better” career for them—especially when parents are already forcing their children to adopt their own dreams as they failed to achieve them due to family or financial issues during their teenage years. In this case, a sense of obligation and/or “utang na loob” should not be the sole basis for one to follow a path that is being forcefully shoved in his/her throat. Instead, everyone should recognize that adopting a career role based on a parent’s desire is not the right course of action.
It is believed that thinking of making a suitable career puts pressure on children—the more reason for parents to reduce their children’s pressure by means of taking the initiative to decide for their career. However, every child has the right to pursue the vocation of their choice as well as the right to follow their goals and aspirations in life. This is due to the fact that, in the worst case scenario, if children chose to follow a career path chosen by their parents that, not to mention, does not fall under their interest, chances are they would meet a lot of challenges and pressure as they would be pursuing something that they are only forced to deal with. Considering this, every child should not be denied the opportunity to pursue a vocation that most appeals to them.
With these considerations in mind, parents should realize that even if it may appear that they are guiding their children in the right path, these teenagers need to have the time and space to choose and follow a career that they are truly passionate about. Despite everything, in terms of decision-making, parents must be there to aid but not dictate.

The Contrasting that No One Needs

Ihad my first phone when I was in my 3rd grade, before I had it, it was my younger brother who had a gadget before me. It was supposed to be a gadget shared by the two of us but then he was the one always using it. He was younger so as an older sister I was expected to always understand and be generous to him. He would sometimes not let me borrow the tablet and I would just be sitting there doing nothing. That’s where I started reading and enjoying my own company because I was really bored and had nothing to do. My brother was always playing with his tablet and as for me I focused on doing different things such as playing with my toys and writing in my diaries. As days went by, I had more hobbies than my brother. Right now, I have a better comprehension than my brother, although he was better in doing chores compared to me and was better in terms of saving money.
From my first statements I’ve eventually compared myself to my brother. That was my point of view on how my brother and I differ. I would constantly do these kinds of things, comparing, even in small things that I do or I have. But I’ve come to realize that this is somehow keeping us apart, not in a way that we have different characteristics but because other people would constantly compare us. Comparing happens mostly inside a household where parents have high standards for their children and as well as inside the school where top students are always expected to stay on top. This causes children and other people to be jealous with each other.
When we compare, we would assume that this child deserves something greater because he or she performed better than the other, but have we all noticed that the reason why many youngsters lose sight of their dreams is because we don’t value them as much as we value
How long will it take to make them proud?” “How long will it take to make me proud?” “Am I doing this for myself or for them?” Students frequently have these thoughts that are always filled with confusing and troubling issues leading them to develop certain assumptions, which have an impact on how they reflect things in life. All those assumptions are building up and for them to be able to feel loved, acknowledged, and valued, they do things for others.
With today’s generation, youth is becoming much more mature at their current age. Mature, because teenagers are now eager to engage in responsibilities and duties to move ahead in the path of their development with no outside pressure but pressure coming only from themselves. They have known every single detail, even in the field of politics, government, society, and life. In the field of studies, the youngsters are now insecure and scared of their process and results in academics.

A study found that one of the major risk factors for anxiety in students is the frequent comparison of parents to their children aside from peer pressure, endless comparisons not only provoke anxiety, therefore we must stop it especially to those younger kids.
Relationships between siblings can also be affected when they are compared to each other. Rivalry begins when kids strive to show their parents, they are better, which typically occurs in a home where the kids' parents constantly push them to outperform others while growing up. This is the beginning of young individuals’ resentment, which predicts how they will treat one another in the future. Children are the future of this country, but in order to do so, like any other generations they must help each

other and not destroy each other. All of the comparisons that have been made are identical to those made within schools. Inside the school some people would compare the well performing kids to one another. Similar effects occur when students are compared to other students and when parents compare their children to other children. Actually, academics play a significant role in why many parents compare their kids. I believe that students' desire to complete their assignments on time, improve their performance, and earn good grades is driven by their want to avoid falling behind and being compared to those top students. Which is good not until they get depressed because of it. As a student studying is good, but too much isn’t. There is no need to compare because a school that only focuses on academics is the worst place for people who are great with arts or drama, and one kid might be just too lazy to study but have an IQ and

Comparing can destroy relationships between parents and their children, relationship between siblings, friendship inside schools, and dreams of children. When my brother and I hear people who compare us we just make fun of it and laugh together because we both know where we are bad at and through that, no anger between us happens and I encourage you to do this with your siblings because it’s more fun and convenient. I want to give enlightenment to students that are feeling less because people compare them, that it is okay to fail and receive high expectations from other people. opinions of University of Batangas Lipa Campus (UBLC) students on the ethics of screenshots and the implications of this technology on our digital lives.
To be honest, screenshots have a lot of uses, but in most circumstances, they are used to capture a piece of information and store it as an image. But for me, screenshots are not okay in terms of sharing information. Why? because screenshots can be cropped, manipulated, and chosen. You could pick a certain piece of a story, but some may conclude it as a whole. A portion of a story isn’t the whole one, and in our relevant time, it can cause misinformation. In spite of the fact that screenshots are useful for capturing particular details, in my experience, they can be deceiving if the entire thing is not displayed at once. Because of this, I do not believe that it is appropriate to make use of screenshots when it comes to the process of disseminating information.
No, taking screenshots is not acceptable. I concur that it has the potential to be utilized for quite beneficial things, such as providing evidence; however, it frequently violates the privacy of individuals. The majority of people take screenshots of private messages and then distribute them to a wider audience, which violates the privacy of the recipient.
Iwould say that screenshots are both un/acceptable at a certain degree. It all falls under the intent of the person who did the screenshot. If it’s to humiliate and expose, it is of utmost disgrace. On the otherhand, doing it to inform could be acceptable as long as it is done ethically and for legal reasons. Of course, there is a gray area where we all need to be cautious of.
11-1
Yes. For me, screenshots can be used as evidences if something happens, and/or it can also be for entertainment by means of capturing something funny that can’t be saved, and/or for easier way of “saving” documents and/or pictures.
In my opinion, taking screenshots is acceptable behavior so long as they are not used to make fun of another person. If, on the other hand, they are used as evidence for some kind of problem, then in my opinion that is not a problem at all.
Personally, I believe that there should be a purpose behind making screenshots accessible to the general public. In spite of this, it is the user's responsibility to take full responsibility for their actions and to only share information when it is absolutely necessary to do so. An example of this would be using screenshots of conversations as evidence to back up accusations. However, before partaking in any activity that has the potential to violate the privacy rights of another person, one ought to think about the laws that govern the jurisdiction in question. This is the case regardless of the activity in question. However, it is best to ask for consent, especially if the chat conversation is private and only between the individuals who are involved.

Unknown to many, excessive gaming can gradually morph into a silent threat, ensnaring individuals in its clutches. Hours melt away in front of screens as players succumb to the allure of leveling up, completing missions, or engaging in competitive matches. The relentless pursuit of virtual rewards and the thrill of victory can fuel a cycle
Engage in regular exercise, practice mindfulness and meditation, and limit access to gaming devices. Seek professional help if needed and prioritize real-life social connections. Finally, practice self-care by prioritizing sleep, nutrition, and activities that promote relaxation and stress reduction. While online gaming holds tremendous potential for entertainment and enjoyment, it is vital to recognize the risks associated with excessive gaming. By staying mindful of the pitfalls of gaming addiction and fostering a balanced approach to gaming, we can break free from the metaphorical "pixel prison" and embrace the world beyond the screens.Remember, the magic of gaming lies in the ability to enjoy its wonders without losing sight of the beauty and opportunities that await in the tangible world around us.

and inclusivity, it is crucial for educational institutions to take the necessary steps toward creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students. The University of Batangas is leading the way in this movement by promoting gender-neutral and equality-focused education.
According to Jefferson Litan, the Principal of the High School Department of the University of Batangas Lipa City Campus, gender neutrality is all about empowering both men and women towards gender equality. The University aims to incorporate gender equality concepts into its curriculum, and teachers are encouraged to include them in their lessons as much as possible.
But what exactly is gender neutrality?
Edrilyn Martija, a Junior High School teacher of the UBLC, explains that it removes the notion of being either male or female from a person or entity. Martija was lucky to have grown up with the idea that there is no difference between genders and sees everyone as equal, regardless of their strengths, weaknesses, or opinions.
However, Martija acknowledges that
taking steps towards gender neutrality and inclusivity. The curriculum is being modified to include gender equality notions, and the university plans to celebrate Pride Month in June as per the memorandum of the Department of Education.
Marvin Como, a Senior High School Teacher of the UBLC, defines gender neutrality as an idea that the treatment of persons should not be based on their gender, and that persons should be free to express their gender preference without any fear of prejudice or discrimination. He practices gender neutrality to some extent and believes that it should be present in all interactions and dealings with people,
knowledgeable first about the issues surrounding sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
University
of Batangas
Lipa City High School Department’s Principal Mr. Jefferson M. Litan, the youngest principal that our university ever had, is a very well-known person who has his own advocacies, plans, and goals in life.
Most of his colleagues and students call him “Sir Jeff''. According to his students, Sir Jeff is an excellent educator in many different ways. He is a good speaker and is an English major teacher. He loves to do three things including cycling, pushing through his advocacies, and reading books.
One student that we’ve interviewed was amazed that she saw our principal cycling during the motorcade for the Intramurals 2023, which promotes physical healthiness and caring for our environment. Our principal really loves this thing, according to our interview, he mentioned that since 2015 he was really eager to do cycling even though his parents wouldn’t yet allow him. This is his means for transportation during the pandemic, since also the protocol during this time is that only one member of the family could go out to buy the things for their family with a quarantine pass. Unfortunately, he took a rest from cycling and his last leisure of cycling was way back in October (2022) because there are works that our principal must do. Sir Jefferson also likes community work and was invited to be part of a community-based organization called “Wagayway Equality”. From this organization Sir Jeff, after 5 months, was appointed to be the president, which he mentioned, opened doors to a lot of opportunities for him specifically when it comes to his advocacy works. But currently he is no longer part of the organization and decided to resign way back in March because as for the principal his job is too demanding that he must focus on only one aspect, which is his job.
Mr. Jefferson Litan’s primary advocacy relating LGBTQ+ is providing health services to these individuals mostly to the MSM Community (Men having Sex with Men). Sir Jeff believes that not everyone who does these are gay people but are straight people who do it for work. Thus, he wants to provide health services to them by giving them access to HIV screening. HIV is a virus that attacks the body's immune system. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). There is currently no effective cure for this. The Philippines has the fastest growing HIV
epidemic in the Asia and Pacific Region with a 237% increase in annual new HIV infections from 2010 to 2020. According to DOH (2016) 10,720 (27%) were youth aged 15-24 years are affected by HIV/AIDS here in the Philippines second with the most affected, leading by 25-34 year age group. These individuals aged 15 are still considered very young. Sir Jeff mentioned that it appeals this so much to him because he himself is a high school teacher. After resigning from “Wagayway Equality” Sir Jeff continues to help the community with his advocacies through another organization called “HASH” (HIV and AIDS Support House).
As a teacher his primary advocacy relating LGBTQ+ is to have equal treatment and opportunities to its members in the university’s high school department. Growing up in a generation where being
ASeminar, was done to make people, especially the youth to reflect on their own perspectives, principles, attitudes, behavior and viewpoints for the other gender and oneself in order to develop their understanding and transparency among themselves.
GAD Seminar – Purpose of Establishing the Indicated Project
From unknown truths and confusing thoughts of every individual, GAD Seminar takes place to help people and especially the youngsters to discover their true self.
In this kind of ceremonies or program, those included will be given the chance to learn and reflect on the things they did in the past, and even on the things they are currently doing. They will also receive guidance, help, and knowledge about these types of topics. This covers the widely talked about issues in today’s
gay gets you bullied makes it difficult for him and he then said that this is one thing he wants to change. “LGBTQ+ students are as important as the straight ones or the cisgender” says Sir Jeff. University of Batangas is considering certain policy changes when it comes to how they deal with the LGBTQ+ Community, although they are still far from being a hundred percent when it comes to this. But yet, the university is in a good start because no cases of bullying to LGBTQ+ students are being reported.
Our university’s principal would sometimes combine his hobby with his advocacy, just like going to Sto. Tomas (through cycling) and staying there for a few hours looking for some clients who are interested in having an HIV screening. Individuals who do HIV screenings in different places are called Community-
"Implementing gender-neutrality in every activity is all about a conscious and consistent effort to eliminate gender-based discrimination and promote inclusivity," said Como. This can be observed in using gender-neutral language such as "they/ them" instead of "he/she". He highlighted that this approach was used in the 2019 Amendment of the 1997 Rules of Civil Procedure in the Philippines.
The fight for the LGBTQIA+ community is a long one, and the University of Batangas acknowledges that it is a long process towards creating a genderneutral and equality-focused environment.
Litan believes that everyone must be
Based HIV Screening Motivators. He conducted 3 different researches about the LGBTQ+ Community. He came up with his 1st research which is funded by the University because of one of his students before who considers herself as a gay man, who had struggles with going to the comfort room because of her sexuality and that she doesn’t feel comfortable with having another person inside the restroom. This student would ask one of her friends to stand in the comfort room’s door so nobody can enter while she’s inside. After he knew about it, he thought to himself “why do those things happen, those shouldn’t be happening”. This shows how many individuals that do not consider themselves as a man or a woman really had the struggle with how this world is.
His research was also about gender and development. Now this is somewhat a question to him because this talks about context about men and women but very few when it comes to the context of LGBTQ+ protection. Our University way back 2018 when it comes to actual policies created by them regarding LGBTQ+, there were none. The result he was able to get was that our school is still taking its initial steps with regards to this issue.
After this way back 2020-2021 he made his 2nd research about LGBTQ+ school personnels. He mentioned that it was also the same that these school personnels would also want specific policies applicable for the LGBTQ+ Community, they would want to be represented, and they would want to see their bosses’ openly supporting gay individuals.
His 3rd research that he is currently doing is about accessing the knowledge and access of youth members to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights or
"The fight for the LGBTQIA+ is a very long war. We haven't fully done anything yet regarding this topic, but we hope that sooner or later, things are going to happen, and we can see more gender neutrality in our school," he added.
As they say, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and the University of Batangas has taken that step but it's worth remembering that the fight for equality is not a one-time event. It is a journey that requires constant attention and progress. The road ahead may be difficult, but with initiatives like these, we can ensure a brighter and more inclusive future for all.
SRHR. This covers almost everything from discrimination to bullying, to access to information, and to access to health services. The topics he and his colleagues are currently seeking to explore are all about his advocacy, including his advocacy for students, workers, and HIV services. And he hoped that the three researchers he made would have a positive effect on the community as well as the university in some way or another.
Sir Jeff mentioned that he is very privileged to have never received any form of discrimination recently coming from other people inside the campus. And that he considers people he works with such as people in the office and his co-teachers as his support groups, as well as his friends now that he has opened his sexuality to everyone, he came out February 14, 2017. In a sense that he can be open to them without the fear of being judged. But to admit that our school principal years way back before also has experienced discrimination from other teachers. It became a struggle for him from the perspective of Filipinos to gay people or the LGBTQ+ Community. We Filipinos are bred to judge them which is what we have to change. A young man crying does not mean he is gay. A gentle guy is not gay. A guy that is weak in basketball is not gay. The word gay or the word we commonly use in Filipino ``bading” has become a word of discrimination because of how we see and use it.
Sir Jeff believes that being gay does not define the things that you can and can’t do. It’s just that when you’re good at something and you’re gay it does not automatically mean that you are good because you’re gay. You are good at something because you are with or without your gender.
the world confidently with our real us, we should not stoop nor hide from the crowd, let the real us be wide and awake.
generation which is personal principle, behaviors, beliefs, connections, and mindset.
The said program was held to open minds, create clarity, develop the feel of freedom, and to make people acknowledge the equal rights of both men and women along with the other respective sexuality. This will show them that the opportunity for fair treatment is given to them and will be able to fulfill their entire capabilities as active citizens of society.
According to the National Level, removing toxics and judgemental individuals from social media platforms, online pages and groups could strengthen the relationship of all genders in the field of creating a healthy environment. Whereas it will lead into a more open and understanding society.
As the advancement of today’s life continues, almost all of the significant aspect of it opens into the new world of taking the most of every capable individual in order to move forward and advance into the new beginning. By the officials,
Capital Development, all gender is now acknowledged and considered as an essential asset.
In performing this type of activity, the officials would be able to have an image showing the state of men and women here in the Philippines. GAD Seminar’s main goal is to determine the main problems that all of us face, then list the steps taken by the authorities to address those concerns. Another thing is to make both private and social decisions available for any gender identity.
Conquer Your Fears and Go Chase Your Dreams
A quote stated by Harvey Milk says, “All young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, deserve a safe and supportive environment in which to achieve their full potential.” This statement signifies a fair and brave role to live on in this society. A statement where the courage of people can be pulled. We must face
A lot of individuals are currently experiencing the difficulties of being not straight—no exceptions, no equality, and no acceptance. People will cover their opportunities and way through success just so they can prove their power. In these situations, educated, understandingPlace sexual orientation and sexual identity aside, build what you want to build, create what you want to create, never let those labels mark your steps.
A little bit of progress is still an action towards a good tomorrow. Small steps at a time, do not rush things. Let yourself sink in through reality, make their doubts your stepping stone throughout the journey of pursuing your dreams.
If things become more difficult to the point where it’s very hard to hold, remember your past and think of it as an inspiration. You were just there yesterday and now you’re here! You’re thriving. Different stories were publicized and a lot of people have read it, the insights and effects were known yet they still continue to harass and discriminate. Deep into these issues, victims get the chance to speak up and let the world know their difficulties and problems on a daily basis.

You are the gravity that draws my heart away
You are the moon at which hour I'm engulfed in darkness

You are my own warmth at which hour I shiver in cold,
You are own solace when my emotions can't hold.
You are the pleasant melody performed in symphony,

Your kiss is like the rain, soft in every drop of water, Your tears are daggers of pain, the ones that make my heart falter
Your eyes are like the ocean, tides rolling filled with emotion, I'm completely enamored with you, smitten beyond measure and reason.
Today my love, let me sing you a song when you’re with me, nothing goes wrong
A love so priceless, a love so sincere, within your arms, I have nothing to fear.

It’s a difficult choice to make and sometimes our hearts begin to ache as we weigh the pros and cons of each road and try to navigate life’s great unknowns.
The fear of making the wrong choice can be paralyzing, and can silence our voice, but what if we take a step of faith and trust that this new road is safe? So let us not be held back by fear and let us embrace the unknown.

Blind trust, a perilous game we play, with stakes too high to easily sway. For when we place our faith in another, we may find ourselves left to smother. We may ignore the warning signs, and trust blindly, until the end of times. But the cost of such naivete, is often more than we can pay. For when we put our trust in those, who have no qualms with playing the roles, we may find ourselves left alone, with nothing but the lies they've sown. It's a lesson learned the hard way, as you pick up the pieces day by day, and realize that trust should be earned, not blindly given to the undeserved. Blind trust is a risky game to play- a high price to pay f you go astray. For trust without sight is like a leap of faith, with no guarantee of a safe landing place. The cost of blind trust is a heavy toll, a burden to bear upon one's soul. When you put your faith in another's hand, you risk the chance of a broken stand.
For when trust is blind, the truth is opaque, and lies and deceit can quickly take shape. With no way to see the danger ahead, you could end up in a world of dread. The price of blind trust can be too steep, leaving you wounded and in a heap. But if you open your eyes and learn to see, you can avoid the pitfalls of blind trust's decree. So tread with caution and keep your eyes wide, and et your intuition be your guide. For in the end, it's better to be aware, than to pay the price of blind trust's snare.

An AI-Powered Companion for UBians
Iadvancements, an unconventional trend has taken the world by storm - the rise of electronic cigarettes, commonly known as "vapes." These sleek and portable devices have revolutionized the smoking landscape, offering an alternative to traditional cigarettes with a touch of modern flair. As we delve into the enigmatic world of e-cigarettes, we uncover a realm of flavors, tricks, and controversy that has captivated both users and skeptics alike.
E-cigarettes, comprised of a cartridge, atomizer, and battery, have come a long way since their inception. What once resembled traditional cigarettes has now transformed into discreet, USB-like devices or compact pods that effortlessly fit into the palm of your hand. The allure of vapes is not limited to their appearance; it's the freedom to explore a vast array of tantalizing e-juice flavors that sets them apart. From fruity delights to decadent desserts, these customizable tastes add a new dimension to the vaping experience.
Some people use them instead of regular cigarettes like Marlboro, Fortune, etc. Similar to how people smoke traditional cigarettes, users use vapes by inhaling the device and then taking smoke from it, which they then exhale through their mouth.
Tricks are done using vapes, where they form something out of exhaling the thick smoke. These also have tastes added to them and are known as “e-juice flavors”.
Considering its price, vapes are expensive but compared to smoking 20 cigarettes per day vapes are a lot
cheaper. While the financial cost of vaping may initially raise eyebrows, it pales in comparison to the expenses associated with a pack-a-day cigarette habit.
Advocates of vaping argue that it is a safer alternative to smoking, as e-cigarettes do not produce the toxic tar and carbon monoxide found in traditional tobacco smoke. The notion of a reduced harm potential has sparked interest among health-conscious individuals looking to transition away from the dangers of smoking. However, recent studies have shed light on the potential risks associated with vaping, particularly among young users.
It is said that vaping is less harmful than smoking. The two most dangerous components of tobacco smoke, tar and carbon monoxide, are not produced by e-cigarettes. The lethal mixture of 7,000 poisonous compounds in cigarette smoke is typically less abundant in e-cigarette aerosol than it is.
“We are now going into the vaping epidemic, and we know that there is really going to be a vaping epidemic because the 13 to 15 years of age Filipino children, 40 percent of them are already using vapes,”
Dr. Maricar Limpin said on One News
While e-cigarettes may lack the lethal cocktail of 7,000 poisonous compounds found in traditional cigarettes, they are not entirely harmless. Chemicals such as acetaldehyde, acrolein, and formaldehyde can be produced by vaping, potentially leading to cardiovascular and pulmonary illnesses. Furthermore, emerging research suggests that vaping can impact the respiratory system's ability to combat infections, making individuals more susceptible to bacterial and viral diseases, including the battle against COVID-19.

Introducing Kettybot
Kettybot, the AI-powered robot, was recently introduced at the University of Batangas in Lipa City, marking the first time a university in the Philippines piloted an AI-driven service. The introduction of Kettybot was made possible by the Center for Business and Innovation (CBI), which successfully launched the robot on September 16, 2022.
According to CBI Director Ericson Mendoza, Kettybot is a groundbreaking development for the university, as it is the first commercialized AI robot in the Philippines. Its functions are primarily intended for ushering and reception, making it perfect for featuring promotional videos, greetings, and automated interactions with students and visitors.
"KettyBot is an AI-driven usher robot or server. Initially, it is designed for Food, Beverages, and Hotels, like for ushering because of its functionality," he said.
Despite being designed as an AI-driven usher robot or server for F&B and hotels, Kettybot's potential extends far beyond its initial purpose. In line with the university's vision, the Center for Business and Innovation (CBI) sees it as a tool for research,
Bringing Campus Life to the Next Level
Kettybot is not just an ordinary robot that roams around the campus. One of the primary purposes of Kettybot is to automate manual and repetitive tasks that students and staff need to complete right away. It can easily provide directions to various university hallways and even deliver things to rooms.
What sets Kettybot apart from other robots is its ability to communicate with a person through its camera. The robot's video call feature allows students and guests to interact with Kettybot and get the information they need in a more personalized and engaging way.
Moreover, Kettybot has a built-in feature that allows it to avoid obstacles and find a new route to its destination when faced with an obstruction or person in its path. When it senses a person in front of it, it automatically pauses and goes in the opposite direction or route to prevent any harm or injury.
This type of potential is what the CBI intends to enhance and to empower. Through the innovation of Kettybot, the newly-established department hopes to inspire students and showcase the potential of this cutting-edge technology.
"Hopefully, we can inspire them, and
hopes to prepare them for a tech-driven future.
Exploring the Possibilities
As the University of Batangas-Lipa City continues to embrace its mission statement- which is to allow students to participate in a global, technology, and research-driven environment, the Center of Business and Innovation (CBI) is actively exploring innovative research and development projects in partnership with MySolutions of Pudu Robotics, Filsotech Inc., and the University of Batangas-Lipa City. The collaboration aims to explore new features and possibilities for Kettybot and other potential AI-driven technologies that could benefit students from various disciplines.
The creation of Kettybot is just the beginning for the Center of Business and Innovation (CBI). The department is always exploring new projects and initiatives to further enhance the campus and its students' experiences. The next step for CBI in relation to Kettybot is yet to be revealed, but it is expected to be a significant development.
Aside from developing and incubating startups out of the students and faculty, the department is also interested in forming other startups from outside the university. With a primary goal of creating a startup and a technology-driven environment, the CBI is committed to paving the way for the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs.
Furthermore, the CBI is planning on introducing summer programs like coding for kids, which will provide students with the opportunity to learn about technology from a young age. With the rise of digitalization, the CBI recognizes the importance of equipping students with the necessary skills to succeed in a technology-driven world.
"In this age of digitalization, everything is going towards technology development."

Beyond the health concerns lie environmental ramifications. The rise in e-cigarette usage has led to the proliferation of single-use plastics, improper disposal of batteries, and the accumulation of electronic waste. These factors contribute to plastic pollution and pose challenges in finding sustainable recycling solutions for these modern gadgets.
Like any other regular cigarettes, the effects of vaping to secondhand smokers are still hazardous. According to ANRF, the secondhand aerosol (incorrectly referred to as vapor by the industry) produced by electronic smoking devices (ESDs) contains nicotine, ultrafine particles, and low quantities of chemicals that are known to cause cancer. Exposure to fine and ultrafine particles may worsen respiratory conditions like asthma and constrict blood vessels, which may result in a heart attack.
ESD aerosol contains a high concentration of ultrafine particles, which is more harmful than conventional tobacco cigarette smoke.
Recognizing the potential risks and societal impact, local governments have implemented regulations to mitigate the negative effects of vaping. Restrictions on the sale and use of e-cigarettes in areas frequented by minors, such as schools and playgrounds, aim to safeguard the wellbeing of young individuals. Additionally, raising the legal age for tobacco and e-cigarette usage to 21 demonstrates a commitment to protecting the future generation from the potential harms of these products.
As we unravel the complexities surrounding e-cigarettes, it becomes evident that the world of vaping is not without its controversies and concerns. While it offers an alternative to traditional smoking and a canvas for personalization, it is crucial to approach vaping with caution and an informed understanding of the potential risks involved. Balancing personal choices with public health and environmental responsibility will ultimately shape the future of this enigmatic trend.

In Batangas, there is currently no available data regarding the presence of microplastics in the region. However, environmental experts are emphasizing the importance of not overlooking the potential threat posed by these pollutants and urging the local government to take proactive measures.
Social media has undoubtedly revolutionized the way people communicate and consume information throughout the World Wide Web. However, it has also opened up a new avenue for the younger generation to experience the perils of toxic behavior. The effects of toxicity on social media have become evident in the Philippines, as well as around the world.
In the Philippines, cancel culture has become a widespread phenomenon. The #MeToo movement has brought about an increased awareness of sexual harassment and abuse, but it has also led to a culture of "call-out" culture. This trend can be harmful to individuals and society as a whole. It can create a toxic environment where people are afraid to speak out or share their opinions for fear of public shaming.
The rise of dangerous trends on social media platforms is also a cause for concern in the Philippines. One of the most alarming examples is the "Kiki Challenge," which involves jumping out of a moving vehicle and dancing to Drake's "In My Feelings" while the car is still in motion. This trend, which started in the United States, quickly spread to the Philippines and other countries.
The Kiki Challenge has led to several injuries and even deaths, highlighting the dangers associated with viral challenges.
The effects of being "chronically online" have also become apparent in the Philippines. The excessive use
of social media platforms has led to a sense of FOMO or Fear of Missing Out, which can negatively impact mental health. Additionally, social media addiction can lead to social isolation, as people become more focused on their online persona than their real-world relationships.
Toxicity on social media has consequences beyond mental health. In the Philippines, fake news and disinformation have become a significant concern. The spread of false information on social media platforms can lead to social unrest and even violence. The Philippine government has taken steps to combat fake news, including passing a law criminalizing the spread of false information online.
To combat toxicity on social media, individuals and society as a whole need to take steps to acknowledge and prevent it. First and foremost, it is important to recognize the negative effects of toxic behavior online. By acknowledging the harm caused by cancel culture, dangerous trends, and excessive time online, we can work towards creating a more positive and
inclusive online environment. Social media platforms can also play a critical role in combating toxicity on their platforms. By implementing policies that prohibit hate speech, bullying, and harassment, social media platforms can help foster a safer online environment. Additionally, by promoting positive and uplifting content, social media platforms can encourage individuals to engage in healthy and productive behaviors online.
In conclusion, the negative effects of toxicity on social media are becoming increasingly apparent in the Philippines and around the world. Cancel culture, dangerous trends, being "chronically online," and fake news are all aspects of social media that can have negative effects on individuals and society as a whole. However, by acknowledging the harm caused by toxic behavior online and taking steps to combat it, we can create a more positive and inclusive online environment. It is essential for both individuals and social media platforms to take responsibility and work towards a safer and healthier online culture.

The Effects of Mindoro Oil Spill on Livelihoods
Story by Alessandra Leope
The Oriental Mindoro oil spill is a disaster that has affected not only the environment but also the lives and livelihoods of thousands of people. One of the most significant impacts of the oil spill is on the local fishing industry. The tainted waters have resulted in massive production losses, leaving many fisherfolks without a source of income.
The oil slick has reached Palawan and Batangas since the boat sank on February 28, causing widespread damage to marine ecosystems and affecting the livelihoods of those who depend on them. Over 173,000 individuals or 36,700 families have been affected by the oil spill in Oriental Mindoro alone. The Mimaropa Region, which includes Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan, has the highest number of affected residents with 138,043. Calabarzon and Western Visayas have also seen a significant impact from the oil spill.
Of the affected population, 16,930 are fisherfolks who have lost their source of livelihood due to the tainted waters. The production losses have amounted to a staggering P263,556,100, a significant blow to the already struggling fishing industry. The long-term effects of the oil spill on marine ecosystems and fish populations remain unknown, but it is likely that the
impact will be felt for years to come.
The effects of the Mindoro oil spill on local livelihoods go beyond the fishing industry. Residents have reported experiencing cramps, vomiting, and dizziness, which can be attributed to exposure to the toxic chemicals released by the oil. These health issues can prevent affected individuals from working or carrying out their daily activities, further exacerbating the economic impact of the disaster.
The government has responded to the disaster by providing humanitarian assistance and implementing programs such as the Cash-for-Work program intended for target affected beneficiaries from Calabarzon, who will be deployed for 15 days of work. While these programs are essential, they may not be enough to address the longterm economic impact of the oil spill on affected communities.
The Oriental Mindoro oil spill serves as a sobering reminder of
the far-reaching consequences of environmental disasters. The disaster has highlighted the need for more stringent safety measures to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. It also underscores the importance of investing in renewable energy sources and transitioning away from a dependence on fossil fuels, which can have devastating consequences on the environment and local livelihoods.
In conclusion, the Mindoro oil spill has caused significant damage to the environment and local livelihoods, particularly in the fishing industry. The long-term effects of the disaster remain unknown, but it is clear that affected communities will need ongoing support to recover from the economic impact of the disaster. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of environmental responsibility and the need for stricter safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The study, which was supported by the Department of Science and Technology and published in the Environmental Science and Pollution Research Journal, analyzed air samples from 17 local governments in the National Capital Region from December 16 to December 31, 2021, or during the peak of the COVID-19 epidemic.
Even though specific research for Batangas is yet to be conducted, it is crucial for authorities to proactively address this issue to protect the region's environment and the well-being of its residents.
While awaiting further investigation specific to Batangas, it is important to consider the findings from the Metro Manila study. The study revealed the first-ever establishment of microplastics in the ambient air of the Philippines' capital, known as one of the world's largest plastic polluters.
Microplastics, which are plastic fragments smaller than five millimeters, pose significant risks to both the environment and human health. Previous studies have shown potential adverse effects on internal organs, entry into the bloodstream, and harm to marine life through ingestion by aquatic organisms.
Leading the Metro Manila study, Rodolfo Romarate and Hernando Bacosa from the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology cautioned that the impact of microplastics in the air and their long-term effects remain uncertain.
“This is really a new realm for us unlike heavy metals in the atmosphere which are heavily studied,” Bacosa said in an interview with the Inquirer.
The predominant type of microplastics detected in the air was fibrous microplastics, likely originating from degraded lint. These particles might have been suspended in the atmosphere, raising concerns about their dispersion and potential consequences.
“This is a major pollutant of our generation and yet there is a dearth of studies and there is a need to further establish [associated risks],” he added.
Among other findings, the researchers found the existence of microplastics in all 17 local governments, with the highest concentrations in the cities of Mandaluyong and Muntinlupa (19).
The lowest concentration of microplastics was found in Malabon (1), followed by Quezon City (2), Pasig (3), Parañaque and Las Piñas (both 5).
For now, it’s unclear why these cities recorded such concentrations, Bacosa said.
But he theorized that wind currents from shoreline cities were blowing the fragments inward, which is why landlocked cities like Mandaluyong were receiving the brunt of it.
Asked to explain the phenomenon in simple terms, Romarate said that if a human being were to inhale three balikbayan boxes’ worth of air in one day, they are likely to breathe in at least one particle of microplastic.
This also means they could inhale up to 88 such particles in a year.
According to the United States National Ocean Service, microplastics are plastic debris less than five millimeters in length, or “about the size of a sesame seed,” and “come from a variety of sources, including from larger plastic debris that degrades into smaller and smaller pieces.”
Microbeads, which are very small bits of produced polyethylene plastic, are used as exfoliants in health and cosmetic products such as cleansers and toothpastes.
“These tiny particles easily pass through water filtration systems and end up in the ocean and Great Lakes, posing a
potential threat to aquatic life,” the agency said.
But the ocean service acknowledged that as an emerging field of study, “not a lot is known about microplastics and their impacts yet.”
Bacosa, on the other hand, referenced previous research findings indicating possible concerns presented by microplastics to human health, such as those indicating they could cause stress to internal organs and enter the bloodstream.
Microplastics in marine life studies, on the other hand, have revealed that microplastics can induce tissue damage and oxidative stress in fish, he added. Microplastics are also potential transmitters of bacteria and viruses when suspended, according to Bacosa. Studies of microplastics in marine life, on the other hand, have also shown that microplastics could cause tissue damage and oxidative stress in fish, he noted.
When suspended, microplastics are also potential carriers of bacteria and viruses, Bacosa added.
According to Romarate, the majority of the microplastics recovered by the researchers for the Metro Manila investigation were fibrous microplastics, or lint degraded into even smaller sizes that had likely lofted into the air. "There are still many aspects to consider, such as the health implications of microplastics in the air or what causes them to be concentrated in certain cities," Bacosa said.
Both Romarate and Bacosa made it clear, however, that the “fate and the health effects of these [microplastics] would remain uncertain.”
"There are still many aspects to be considered, like the health implications of microplastics in the air or what causes them to be concentrated in certain cities,” Bacosa said.
For the time being, Bacosa says it's unknown why these cities have such high concentrations. However, he hypothesized that wind currents from shoreline cities were driving the shards inland, causing landlocked cities like Mandaluyong to bear the brunt of it. When asked to describe the issue in layman's terms, Romarate stated that if a person inhales three balikbayan boxes of air in one day, they are likely to inhale at least one particle of microplastic. This means they could swallow up to 88 particles every year.
“We see these data as something that should make us think about our consumption of plastics but also how we address it as a function of policy,” Bacosa said, adding: “At the end of the day, it is a complex problem.”
Despite the absence of localized data, adopting a proactive stance is crucial for the Batangas government. Bacosa emphasized that suspended microplastics can serve as carriers of bacteria and viruses.
While the concentration and sources of microplastics in specific areas require further investigation, comprehensive plastic waste management strategies must be implemented.
Addressing this environmental challenge involves policy changes and raising public awareness.
The Metro Manila study serves as a wake-up call for reconsidering plastic consumption and waste management practices.
Taking proactive measures in Batangas, such as promoting sustainable waste management solutions and reducing plastic usage, can help mitigate the potential proliferation of microplastics in the region's air, water, and ecosystems. By acting now, Batangas can preserve its natural beauty, safeguard marine life, and ensure the well-being of its residents for generations to come.

FAIR PLAY OR FOUL PLAY Sportsmanship in Modern Athletics
When it comes to the world of sports, a pressing question emerges: Does the spirit of good sportsmanship still reign supreme among athletes, or has it suffered a decline in recent years?
Sportsmanship, once the bedrock of athletic contests, seems to have encountered some hurdles in recent years. In the pursuit of victory, some athletes have succumbed to unsportsmanlike conduct, tarnishing the spirit of fair play. While not a universal trend, instances of poor sportsmanship have received significant media attention, raising concerns about the state of integrity within various sporting disciplines. It is crucial, however, to remember that these instances should not overshadow the countless athletes who continue to embody the principles of good sportsmanship. Many competitors, despite the pressure and intensity of the game, uphold fair play, respect their opponents, and display graciousness in both victory and defeat. In an era driven by instant gratification and the pursuit of personal glory, maintaining good sportsmanship becomes increasingly challenging. The lure of fame, lucrative contracts, and endorsements can create an environment where athletes prioritize individual achievements over fair play.
Nevertheless, it is heartening to witness athletes who remain steadfast in their commitment to sportsmanship, serving as beacons of inspiration for future generations.
While some argue that the decline in sportsmanship is a symptom of modern sports, it is important not to generalize or dismiss the positive examples that persist. Leagues and sporting bodies play a vital role in cultivating an environment that encourages and rewards good sportsmanship. By establishing and enforcing codes of conduct, promoting fair play initiatives, and celebrating athletes who embody sportsmanship, these organizations can reinforce the values that make sports a source of inspiration and joy.
Ultimately, the responsibility lies not only with athletes but also with coaches, parents, and fans to uphold the principles of good sportsmanship. By instilling and reinforcing these values from a young age, we can cultivate a culture that appreciates fair play, respect, and camaraderie. It is through collective efforts that we can rekindle the spirit of sportsmanship and ensure that it remains an integral part of the sports we love.

The Game of National Identity
In the realm of national identity, the intertwining of sports and patriotic fervor has been a subject of contemplation. Many people associate their love for sports with a deep sense of national pride. However, it is crucial to strike a balance and recognize the value of individual accomplishments in shaping our collective identity.
While sports undoubtedly have the power to bring people together, it is important to avoid tunnel vision when it comes to national pride. The enthusiasm surrounding sports should not overshadow the accomplishments of individuals in other fields.
National identity encompasses a wide spectrum of achievements, spanning fields such as science, technology, arts, and humanitarian endeavors. In expanding the scope of recognition, a more comprehensive and inclusive understanding of patriotism can emerge.
The appreciation for individual accomplishments should not be misconstrued as a lack of patriotism or disregard for sports.
Rather, it is a call for a more balanced perspective. Sports serve as a unifying force, generating excitement and fostering a sense of belonging.
However, true national pride transcends the boundaries of the sporting arena. It is built upon the achievements and contributions made by individuals from all walks of life.
By commemorating both athletic triumphs and personal achievements, society can adopt a diverse and multifaceted national identity.
As the notion of national identity progresses, it becomes crucial to strike the perfect balance between sports and individual accomplishments.
It is through this careful equilibrium that an allencompassing and lively sense of patriotism can thrive.
By recognizing the significance of sports and acknowledging the wide array of individual successes, society can establish a more robust and cohesive national identity.

Marikina City, in collaboration with the DepEd-National Capital Region (NCR) Office and the Schools Division Office (SDO) of Marikina City, is proud to host this year's edition of Palarong Pambansa.
The organizers have diligently planned the event, taking into account the recommendations put forth by the Palarong Pambansa Secretariat.
In an effort to streamline the competition and enhance efficiency, a novel tier called the Pre-National Qualifying Meet will be introduced.
This addition aims to reduce the number of participating delegations, shorten the event's duration, and minimize expenses, all while maintaining a high level of competition.
The Pre-National Qualifying Meet will exclusively focus on team sports, including baseball, basketball, football, futsal, sepak takraw, and volleyball.
By clustering delegations into four groups based on their geographical locations, the competition becomes more dynamic. Cluster 1 comprises the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).
Cluster 2 features CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, NCR, and Bicol Region. Cluster 3 encompasses Western, Central, and Eastern Visayas, as well as the Zamboanga Peninsula Region. Finally, Cluster 4 consists of Northern Mindanao, Davao, SOCCKSARGEN, CARAGA, and BARMM.
From each cluster, the top two regional delegations will earn the
opportunity to advance to the main Palarong Pambansa event.
This modified format has been carefully designed to minimize disruptions to regular classes and ensure strict adherence to minimum public health and safety protocols.
As stipulated in DepEd Order No. 34, s. 2022, and other relevant policies and guidelines, the event will prioritize the well-being of participants and spectators alike.
For measurable sports like athletics, swimming, and archery, qualifying distances, times, and points established by the Palarong Pambansa will be implemented.
On the other hand, sports that do not utilize qualifying standards for athlete selection and are not categorized as team sports will proceed directly to the Palarong Pambansa culminating competitions.
Excitingly, apart from studentathletes from the 17 DepEd regional athletic associations, Filipino athletes enrolled in recognized schools overseas will also have the opportunity to compete in individual sports under the banner of Philippine Schools Overseas (PSOs).
This inclusion reflects the organizers' commitment to embracing diversity and recognizing talent from various educational systems.
In the coming days, a separate memorandum will be released, outlining the technical guidelines for all sports to be played. These guidelines will adhere to Section 27, Rule VI of the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of Republic Act (RA) 10588, also known as the Palarong Pambansa Act of 2013.
Marikina City is ready to welcome athletes, coaches, and spectators from across the nation, as the 2023 Palarong Pambansa promises to be a thrilling celebration of sportsmanship and talent.

Esports Deals a Blow to Athleticism
As traditional sports continue to push the boundaries of athleticism, a new player has entered the game: esports. In recent years, esports has been gaining popularity, but traditional athletes and fans may dismiss it as a "rookie error" or mistake in the world of sports simply because it doesn't fit into their traditional definition of what a sport should be. While some may argue that esports is a legitimate sport, it is still important to acknowledge that it lacks the fundamental aspects that make sports what they are.
One of the most significant aspects of sports is athleticism. Being an athlete requires a level of physical ability that is not present in esports. Sure, esports players may have quick reflexes and sharp hand-eye coordination, but this is not enough to qualify it as a legitimate sport.
Athleticism is a crucial element of sports, and it encompasses much more than just being able to move quickly. It is not just about being able to move quickly or hit a ball far. It involves strength, endurance, and a wide range of physical abilities that simply aren't present in esports. Traditional sports require athletes to push their bodies to the limit, to build strength, and to improve their physical abilities over time. This is what sets athletes apart from casual gamers.
Another essential element of sports is competition. Sports require head-to-head competition with tangible goals, such as scoring points, crossing the finish line first, or completing a set number of rounds. Esports, on the other hand, lack this sense of competition. While there are certainly winners and losers in esports, there is no
However, this does not mean that esports is any less valid or deserving of recognition. We are living in a modern world where technology has made it possible to create a whole new type of competition. Esports has opened up a new perspective on sports, shifting the focus from athleticism to skill and effort. E-players must devote countless hours to practicing and honing their skills. They must develop strategies, learn how to use different tools and techniques, and work together as a team to achieve their objectives. The level of dedication required to become a professional esports player is no different from that required of a traditional athlete.
It is indeed a rookie error to dismiss esports as a legitimate form of competition simply because it lacks the physicality of traditional sports. As the world of sports continues to evolve, it is important to recognize the value and significance of esports. While it may differ from traditional sports in some ways, it offers a fresh perspective on what sports is. Whether it's on the field or on the screen, the spirit of competition remains the same. By acknowledging esports as a legitimate form of competition despite its lack of physical athleticism, we can unlock a whole new level of understanding on what it means to be an athlete and inspire a new generation of players to push the limits of human performance in the digital arena.

able tennis, or paddle power, is an exciting and dramatic sport that demonstrates the remarkable link between the mind and body. The paddle is more than simply an inanimate instrument; it is an extension of the player's arm, a conduit for their cerebral and physical abilities. Within the arena of table tennis, the human body morphs into a deep metaphor for the paddle, while the mind becomes the catalyst that releases its full power.
In table tennis, the player's body serves as a conduit for unleashing the force of the paddle, with the paddle serving as the principal instrument. The player guides the paddle using their body, similar to how a conductor conducts an orchestra with a baton.
When a player is in the zone, his or her mind and body work in perfect unison. It's a dance, a movement symphony that demands split-second timing and razorsharp attention. The player must anticipate their opponent's shots and interpret their opponent's actions. It's a high-stakes strategy and mental agility game. The mind-body link, however, extends beyond physical activity. Table tennis also demands mental toughness and attention.
Under pressure, the player must remain calm and collected, filtering out distractions and staying in the moment.

Z
ena Roca of University of Batangas achieved the 3rd place award in the 5km female category and received a trophy and prize money at The Outlets at Lipa Half Marathon 2022 held on December 18, 2022.
At first she was nervous about the competition she was going to participate in because her opponents were strong and there was pressure since she wanted to win.
This is not the first marathon she
participated in. She also participated in the 2015 Milo Marathon, 3km finisher where she got a certificate, and also in the "#WhoGot 5k Fun Run, Run your emotions" at Mount Malarayat in 2017 she was a 5km finisher and she brought home a medal.
“Naghanda ako sa competition na ito sa pamamagitan ng pag-titraining every Friday to Sunday or kaya naman every walang pasok,” Roca said.
Her whole family has been participating in these sports, that's why they have been Roca's inspiration and she has also become interested in running and participating in marathons.
“Sumasali ako sa ganitong competition
dahil namulatan ko sa aking parents na ganitong sports ang kanilang sinasalihan, at naging inspiration iyon sa aming magkapatid para sumali din sa ganitong sports. Nagustuhan naman namin ito at ang sarap pala sa feeling na isa itong sports na ito sa nagiging family bonding namin,” she said. Her father also joined the same competition in the 21km Mens category and her older brother in the 10km Mens category, and they were both finishers.
“Gusto nung dad ko na pasalihin kaming magkapatid pero hindi naman kami pinush. Nasa sa'min pa din 'yun kaya sariling decision namin ang sumali," Roca
After she won, she became more interested and motivated in participating in such competitions.
