King David Center for Nursing and Rehab draws thousands to their welcome summer event! The air was vibrating with the sound of celebrating children. To see children gathered around, singing in unity, after months of lockdown, was truly a much anticipated and welcomed sight. It brought out the feeling of freedom everyone so keenly felt, at being invited to their favorite outdoor location. It was June 28 and the King David Center was out to spread some joy. The worldrenowned Uncle Moishy traveled from park to park within the streets of Boro Park and Flatbush bringing music, gifts, balloons and ice cream to the children of the community. Uncle Moishy managed to turn the disappointing faces, as a result of months of isolation, into full fledged smiles wherever he went. How fitting to rejoice in the lift of the lockdown by extending themselves to the community amidst pomp and joy and reintroducing to all, the pure and heart melting smiles that only kids know how to dispense. Even the politicians were drawn to an event that marked an end to the long and difficult era of quarantine. Chaim Deustch, Simcha Eichenstein, Dov Hikind, Kalman Yeger and Heshy Tischler were amongst the influential politicians that flocked to the event, to bask in the celebration of a rehabilitation center that puts the needs and wellbeing of the community at the forefront. King David, legendary for their standard of care, is in the process of renovating their facility to accommodate the heimishe community properly. The renovations will include a state-of-the-art aqua therapy pool and other grand upgrades in order to provide their residents with an unsurpassable rehab experience, while not diminishing the Yiddishe Taam they are used to at home. King David’s consideration to the satisfaction of the community was evident in the event that was planned and executed to perfection

to the delight of the children, and adults that attended. What a day it proved to be. It lived up to the standards that is expected of King David. After a satisfying round of blissful festivities, King David welcomed the community to their soon to be brand new, high end facility with warm wishes for a happy and safe summer.

POINTS TO PONDER (Re: Davening at the Crack of Dawn, Issue 41) I read with enthusiasm the article you published on the topic of davening k’vasikin, which detailed all the pros and cons. I wish to include some pertinent information on this subject. I do not desire to discourage anyone from following this holy practice, but rather to mention three points worth pondering. 1. The opinion of Rabbeinu Tam mentioned in Tosfos (Maseches Yoma 37) states that vasikin is a hiddur for the mitzvah of tefillah but not for Krias Shema. It is preferable to say Krias Shema after netz, when it is definitely day. 2. The Rif and other Rishonim write that it is extremely difficult to calculate the exact time of the netz. This is partially due to the fact that the time may differ slightly from place to place. Additionally, it can vary slightly due to the elevation above sea level of the place in which one is situated. 3. It is said in the name of the Chazon Ish that if one is constantly looking at his watch during davening, it diminishes his concentration. He should rather begin a bit earlier and daven slowly with kavanah. May we be zoche to have our tefillos answered at whatever time we daven. E. INBOX AN INSPIRATIONAL AWAKENING (Re: Davening at the Crack of Dawn, Issue 41) Your theme last week was so inspirational. I think it outdid all the previous ones. I always connect deeply to mornings and find it such a joyous time; the connection to Hashem is so palpable then. My Elter-Bubby, a”h, emigrated from Ukraine to Canada as a young woman and raised her five children (my grandfather was the youngest of them) alone in Montreal after her husband’s untimely passing. Those were the days when you could count its shomer Shabbos families on just one or two hands. Despite climbing stairs daily with crippling arthritis, running a store, and raising a shomer Shabbos family amid ridicule and anti-Semitism, she’d arise early each morning to daven k’vasikin. Together with the emunah she ingrained in us, she passed on the legacy of early-morning davening, and I always love to get up early and daven k’vasikin in her memory. There’s so much kavanah available to tap into at that time of day, as well as a tranquility that fills the air and imbues every fiber of one’s being. It’s something that always connects to the depths of the neshamah and energizes me for the day in such a powerful way. This topic really resonated with me, and I have to say you did great work with the selection of articles; they were so fitting, and I’m sure they truly opened up your readers’ hearts to the meaning of the morning and the special uniqueness of that portion of the day. I only wish there were more content; it’s such a great topic about which so much can be said. Perhaps you could run this theme again one day. That would be amazing. May Hashem grant your magazine success and growth, and may you continue to reach great heights and accomplish amazing things! C.Y.

HALACHIC ADDENDUM (Re: The Morning Melody, Issue 41; By the Way, Issue 39) Thank you for your beautiful, tochen’dig and interesting publication. I’d like to add two interesting halachos to articles that you have published. Your article on Modeh Ani was beautiful. I just want to add for those who may not be aware: After the word “b’chemlah,” a pause should be in place before finishing with “rabbah emunasecha.” Following are a few peshatim on “rabbah emunasecha.” 1. Hashem is trustworthy. We give Him our neshamos, and He returns it every morning fresh and new. 2.  Emunah means steadfast, consistent. Hashem repeats the chesed with us every day without fail. 3. Heard b’shem the Viznitzer Rebbe: Hashem has tremendous trust in us. Even if we may have sinned and failed to return the neshamah the way it was given to us, Hashem trusts us that hopefully tomorrow we will be better and the neshamah will be cleaner than it was today. In reference to the Tefillas Haderech article: As most people know, saying Tefillas Haderech is supposed to be samoch l’bracha. Many people go about this incorrectly, as they make a bracha on a food, eat it and then say the tefillah. However, as noticed, the bracha doesn’t have the traditional beginning of “Baruch Atah Hashem.” Since “samoch l’bracha” means right after a bracha is said, the correct thing to do is make a bracha, eat the food, say a bracha acharonah — and Tefillas Haderech should follow immediately after. A JARRING MEMORY

(Re: FYI Alarm Clocks, Issue 41) When I saw the image you featured of the Sonic Bomb alarm clock, I began to laugh, having been reminded of a funny incident from shanah rishonah. My husband, a very deep sleeper, came into marriage with this alarm clock, which has a round piece that goes under one’s pillow that vibrates strongly when the alarm goes off. I’d never seen or heard of such a thing before, and you can imagine the shock I was in for when my husband forgot to place the vibrating piece under his pillow one night and instead left it on the nightstand. I clearly recall being woken from a sound sleep and jumping bolt upright in bed, clutching my heart and gasping for breath as fright overtook me. The machine was making a racket and jumping so wildly that it ended up on the floor where it continued its frenzied dance,

I was very excited to read the article about thrill-seekers last week, but was disappointed to see how readers were encouraged to glean inspiration from an individual living a low life. In this mishnah, Reb Yosi ben Kisma tells a story. He describes how he was once walking on the road and met a man. They greeted each other, asked where the other was from, and Reb Yosi answered, “I am from a great city of chachamim.” Seeing that Reb Yosi was a distinguished person, the man offered him great wealth in exchange for moving to the city where he lived, but Reb Yosi refused, saying, “Im atah nosein li kol kesef v’zahav… ein ani dor ela bimkom Torah — Not for all the riches in the world would I live anywhere but in a makom Torah.” Reb Yosi then goes on to quote Dovid Hamelech: “Tov li Toras picha mei’alfei zahav vachasef — The Torah of Your mouth is more valuable to me me than thousands of gold.” The mishnos are generally concise and only mention the key points. Why does Reb Yosi mention all the trivial details of the incident when he could’ve gone straight to the point: “Someone offered me money to move to his town, and I declined, because money has no value when compared to a makom Torah”? Then again, why indeed did Reb Yosi not accept the offer? Many tzaddikim moved to spiritual deserts to establish oases of Torah in shtetls devoid of Yidden. How then would Torah spread? The following explanation answers both questions. Had the passerby come to the beis midrash or to the yeshivah while Reb Yosi was learning, and then, after seeing the matzav of Torah and longing for the same in his hometown, invited Reb Yosi to be their rav, he would have been inviting Reb Yosi for the right reasons, and Reb Yosi would have been interested to move. But he made the offer after he happened to bump into Reb Yosi “while he was walking on the road,” and he invited him by merely asking, “Please come live in our town.” The man did not request Reb Yosi to come to inspire the townspeople or help them grow, just to live and merely serve as rav. That offer Reb Yosi rejected. To him, it was either to live and flourish in his current Torah


environment, or move to help a kehillah flourish. Thus, the seemingly superfluous details of where the man’s offer was made is necessary, and Reb Yosi’s turning down of the offer can be understood. When the Chazon Ish arrived in Eretz Yisroel, he was asked to speak in the yeshivah of his brother-in-law, the Steipler Gaon, before tekias shofar, which was a great honor. The Chazon Ish, in his usual attempt to run away from kavod, declined the offer. When he was begged to accept, he got up, and in a thunderous voice he simply reiterated this mishnah several times: “Im atah nosen li kol kesef v’zahav‌ ein ani dor ela bimkom Torah.â€? He lived by these words to such an extent that Rav Moshe Bik once told of a bris he’d attended where the Chazon Ish was present and which he would never forget. The humble Chazon Ish shied away from giving drashos, but the father of the baby begged him to say a few words. The Chazon Ish got up, and everyone waited with bated breath to hear what wisdom would pour forth. The entire drasha took less than a minute. With great emotion the Chazon Ish declared, “Baruch Hashem, I have the great merit of living in Bnei Brak, a city filled with Torah.â€? He repeated this statement over and over again about ten times, and then he sat down. Rav Yechiel Spero tells a phenomenal story in one of his books about a rav in America who moved to a hick town with his young family for a good salary. The move was very productive, and he and his rebbetzin greatly inspired the community to come closer to Yiddishkeit. One Shabbos afternoon, their children went to play at a neighbor’s home. When they came back, the father noticed that his daughter had some residue on her lips, and he asked her what she ate. “Their mother made us an omelette,â€? she answered chirpily. The rav was so horrified to think that someone in his kehillah was mechalel Shabbos behind closed doors that he told his wife then and there that they were moving away. They would not bring up their two children in a city devoid of Shabbos and Yiddishkeit. Indeed, he was ready to give up his salary, his relaxed surroundings and his beautiful suburban home for the dark, densely populated tenements of Williamsburg. He told no one about his plan, lest they tried to dissuade him from the irrational decision, only telling his children when the moving truck actually showed up at the door. It was hard in Williamsburg; the rav didn’t have a position, the family lived in a tiny cramped apartment, but years later he said, “If not for this move, who knows if my son would have turned out to be Rav Shimshon Pincus?!â€?

Reb Yosi goes on to say, “V’lo od ela shebishas petiraso shel adam ein melaven lo l’adam lo chesef velo zahav‌ — When a person leaves this world, he is not escorted by his gold, silver and diamonds, only by his Torah and maasim tovim.â€? Legend has it that one of the philanthropic Reichman brothers wrote in his tzava’ah to his children, “I have never asked you for anything, but now I ask you one thing: Bury me with my black socks.â€? The family was taken aback, but they asked the chevrah kaddisha if they could honor their father’s final, if strange, request. The chevrah kaddisha said it was out of the question; one is buried only with tachrichim. They asked a shailah, but were again told it was absolutely not permitted. And so they went ahead with the burial. That night, they opened a second note, which their father had instructed them to open after the levayah. It said, “Now you see that even my socks I couldn’t take with me!â€? He may have left his children with a great inheritance, but what a powerful legacy he bequeathed them at the same time. There’s a fascinating story about a Russian philanthropist called Donash to whom many roshei yeshivah would flock to fundraise. One such esteemed gadol received a nice, generous donation, but he was not thrilled with the amount; he believed Donash could have given more. “Why is it that when Reb Yoizel (the Alter of Novardok) comes, you just open your safe and let him take however much he wants?â€? he challenged him. Donash answered, “When you come, I see how much you prepared for your visit. You’re wearing your best suit, you look groomed, you knock gently and politely on my door, you wipe your shoes a few times on the doormat, and you courteously wait for me to sit down before you do. Then I think to myself, ‘Why is such a great rav showing me such respect? There’s nothing special about me besides my money, which means that my money is indeed chashuv. If that’s the case, I’d rather keep it!’ “On the other hand, when Reb Yoizel comes, he storms in with no airs and graces, soiling the carpet with his muddy boots, sits down before being invited to, and breaks into a sing-song: ‘Donash, Donash, who are you bichlal? Your money is not worth anything, only the mitzvos you do with it, so I’m here to give you another mitzvah.’ “If my money is not worth anything,â€? Donash told his guest, “why do I need it? All I want is to buy the mitzvah he has to offer, and I let him take however much he wants!â€? Let us not allow the glitter of diamonds and wealth to dim our view of the real reason we are here.

Cuomo and de Blasio Butt Heads on Potential School Openings The war of words between Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio raged on last week, the two squaring off this time over the potential opening of New York City schools in the fall. Replying to a question from a reporter at a press conference last Thursday, de Blasio stated unequivocally that city schools will open in September, with the number of students allowed dependent on the physical size of the building. The mayor emphasized that every available room would be converted into classrooms so that the maximum number of children could be accommodated, albeit with social distancing. De Blasio’s plan also included daily deep cleanings, handwashing, sanitizer stations placed throughout the buildings, and free masks for students. But the Cuomo camp fired back quickly, with the governor reiterating publicly that he, and not de Blasio, has the final word on when schools will open. “All such decisions are made by state government and not local government,” emphasized Cuomo spokesperson Dani Lever, adding, “Of course, the state consults with local stakeholders, and when it comes to opening schools in New York City, we will consult with parents, teachers, health officials and local elected officials — but the governor has said any determination is premature at this point, and we will need to see how the virus develops.” While a Department of Education survey revealed that 75% of New York City parents want their children back in school in September, Cuomo has been advising the state’s school districts to prepare for a new normal when it comes to education. “We are preparing to open schools, we have plans to open schools, but look, I’ll be honest with you,” said Cuomo. “It’s

two months away. Anything can happen in two months.”

Cuomo Says Malls Will Need Upgraded HVAC Filters to Reopen While malls in New Jersey and Connecticut have already opened, their counterparts in New York remain dark, with Governor Andrew Cuomo pulling back from their originally scheduled openings with the onset of Phase 4, which could take place on July 20 in the five boroughs. In an announcement that came last week, Cuomo said that all malls will be required to install filters with a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) that will filter out any existing COVID-19 particles. That decision has left malls statewide feeling that they have been unfairly targeted by the governor, reported Retail Dive. With their multiple levels, open concourses and other large areas, malls should offer a safer environment than big box stores, observed Pete Gerney, whose research groups work with local malls and department stores. Currently, the only mall stores that are allowed to open in New York are those that have outdoor entrances, leaving malls and the vast majority of their tenants gasping for breath. “How do you say that’s a less-safe environment than a Walmart Supercenter that’s jampacked with people and has lower ceilings?” said Gerney. “From an economic perspective, you’re basically

telling every small tenant in that mall that they can’t reopen. You’re allowing the big boxes to take over complete market share and essentially putting these smaller stores out of business.” University of Toronto professor Dr. Jeffrey Siegel, an expert on HVAC filtration, noted that MERV filters are rated in a laboratory, bringing into question their effectiveness in a retail setting. Making MERV filters a prerequisite for reopening malls could also create problems in the supply of personal protective equipment for health care workers, since they are made out of the same materials. According to the Times Herald Record, Cuomo is also contemplating requiring businesses and offices to install MERV filters that can filter out COVID-19 particles as well. The governor acknowledged that he had no idea how much it would cost to install the filters and how long the process might take.

A statement released by Pyramid Management Group, whose properties include the Palisades Center Mall, pleaded with the state to greenlight their opening. “Tenants continue to call for equal treatment and be permitted to open at the same time as other businesses in the local market and in neighboring states,” said Pyramid. “Yet the state of New York ignores their responsible pleas, announcing recently that malls would remain closed.”

Recap: Packing is well underway in the Potolsky home, but Elisheva is worried about people being jealous and causing ayin hara. Eliyahu tells her that using some of their money to write a Sefer Torah can ensure that they’ll be okay. Back in Bratislava, in 1948, Gustav is slowly recovering in the hospital, with Ulush and Janek visiting him regularly. Then, when the police pay a visit to the pediatric ward, Janek realizes that it’s dangerous for them to be seen with Gustav, and he begins to focus on getting out of the country. “Excuse me, did the van from Atah Imadi pass already?” The woman who turned to Elisheva was elderly and seemed to be somewhat blinded by the bright sunlight. “I think it should be here any —” Elisheva, shading her eyes with her hand, didn’t have a chance to finish her sentence before the white van drove around the bend in the road. She climbed aboard and was on her way to spend another day at Tel Hashomer Hospital, in hopes that everything would go smoothly and that her father would feel well enough to be released in a day or two. This was life — strong, turbulent, often drowning out all plans. She had planned and thought and run around and hoped that by this week, they’d finish all the packing and would finally be able to move. But the infection that her father had come down with had upended all of her organized plans. For the past three days, since Rosh Chodesh Nissan, she and Eliyahu had been taking shifts at the hospital, in Internal

Medicine C, while the children were doing the best they could on the home front. Just then her cell phone rang, and an unfamiliar number appeared on the screen. “Ms. Elisheva?” “Yes?” Her voice was laced with puzzlement. “This is Mahmoud from Internal Medicine C.” Her heart skipped a beat. “The hospital?” “Yes. Your father wants to know when you are coming. He’s alone right now.” “I’m on my way,” she replied to the Arab nurse. “Is everything alright?” “Everything is fine. He just didn’t want to eat anything and is waiting for your food.” “Yes, yes, I’ll be there very soon.” Eliyahu, who had been with her father all night, had probably gone down to daven Shacharis, knowing that she was supposed to be arriving just about then. She leaned on the window to her

right, staring at the passing scenery. Baruch Hashem, the staff at the old age home had discovered her father’s very high fever in time, and had summoned them. They’d rushed him to the emergency room, where the doctor told them they were fortunate that he had been brought in early enough. Her father had immediately been started on intravenous antibiotics, and the infection seemed to be healing nicely. “General rehabilitation; geriatric rehabilitation,” the volunteer driver announced. “Anyone getting off?” “I am.” A young bachur stood up. Something about his profile reminded Elisheva of her Binyamin. She was fully aware that something had been bothering Binyamin lately, and she wasn’t buying any of his stories. For two months already something had been off, and she had even wanted to send him for blood work at the beginning of bein hazmanim, but then she’d gotten completely involved with her father. Whatever the case, Binyamin had tried to assuage her fears. “I’m fine, Mommy,” he declared over and over. “I feel good, baruch Hashem. Nothing hurts, and I’m not weak. Pale? Maybe it’s still from the flu I had.” That was possible. But something was bothering him, and it was niggling at her as well. He had always been such a mommy’s boy. Why wasn’t he sharing this with her? What was he afraid of? Only once, on Motzei Purim, had he said something to her. He’d been helping her put away all the stuff they had gotten for mishloach manos, and he’d blurted out a strange sentence. “Mommy,” he’d said, his voice somewhat hoarse from having drunk a bit too much, “if I were to tell you now that I owe someone quite a sum of money, would that be terrible? I mean, because now you’ll have some kind of income from renting out our apartment, right?” She had begun to question him — had he borrowed money from someone? What exactly was he referring to? — but he’d quickly assured her that of course not; he’d never taken a penny from anyone for anything. It sounded true, and he hadn’t said another word on the subject since then. Still, the strange question had dogged Elisheva the entire next day. “Main hospital building, cardiology and emergency room; last stop,” the driver said. She collected her thoughts and her bags and got off the van. As she walked down the corridor, her phone rang again. She saw Mahmoud’s number pop up again. “Hello?” she said, a bit impatiently. “Ms. Elisheva?” “Yes.”

“Are you coming? The head nurse wants to talk to you about discharge.” Elisheva pressed the elevator call button. “I’m already here.” A few minutes later, Elisheva was already standing next to her father’s bed. “You’re going to be released, Tatty, b’ezras Hashem. Today or tomorrow. You’ll come to us then, won’t you?” “No,” he said weakly. He’d always spoken quietly, but since the stroke two years ago, his voice had become even more feeble, especially when he was lying down. “But why?” She sat down on the armchair in which Eliyahu had slept the night before. It was a bit low, but this way she was able to see her father’s face. “It’s not our tiny apartment where everyone can hear everyone else. It’s a huge apartment, and if you get the room farthest from the center, you’ll see that it doesn’t matter that it’s not a separate suite yet. It will be calm and quiet for you there!” “No,” he repeated in a whisper. “But why would you want to go back to the nursing home?” She just couldn’t understand her father. “I’m used to it there.” “I promise you, Tatty, that it won’t be hard for you to get used to our house. And even if maybe, maybe, maybe you don’t get used to it — you can always go back to the nursing home then!” “No.” She sighed. “Mr. Yisroel Benzion, here is your medicine.” The nurse who entered helped her father sit up, sip a bit of water, and swallow the pill. Elisheva didn’t recognize the pill. “What is this?” she asked. “It’s not his blood pressure medication, is it?” “No, it’s the antibiotics. You know, like a ‘spare me the favors, thank you very much’ kind of thing.” Again, the barking overpowered the conversation. “Sorry,” the speaker apologized. “Give me a minute to calm them down again…” “Look,” the caller said after a moment. “I want you to find this out for me. If the impression that you get is that the family is going to live in that gorgeous penthouse that they won, but they want to throw the grandfather back into the nursing home, well, then, they will only lose out from it.” “Don’t say ‘throw’ about our nursing home. It’s a very dignified place.” “Dignified or not, it’s not your nursing home that interests me right now, you hear? I want you to get to the bottom of this.” “And if the grandfather is the one who prefers it this way?” “Then I’ll need to decide what to do.” “Fine,” the man said. On Monuments and Statues THE PULSE: On July 3, President Trump traveled to Mt. Rushmore to celebrate Independence Day. He condemned protestors who have attempted — and in some instances succeeded — in removing statues of leading figures in American history. “We will never allow an angry mob to tear down our statues, erase our history, indoctrinate our children or trample on our freedoms.” He declared that “We are now in the process of defeating the radical left, the Marxists, the anarchists, the agitators, the looters, and people who in many instances have absolutely no clue what they are doing.” With four months left until Election Day, the president has upped the ante in the cultural wars rocking America. Many of his supporters correctly fear that radical elements are trying to tarnish the image of America. Still, many of his detractors claim that the

president is whitewashing the sins of the past and is out of touch with the legitimate grievances of the protesters. America’s founding history is complicated and complex. We will attempt to provide limited background on some key figures courting controversy in today’s heated political climate. CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS: Columbus’s discovery

of the New World paved the way for European settlement of the Americas. Columbus likely received backing from Jewish Spaniards looking to find a safe haven from the Spanish Inquisition and attempting to circumvent the Alhambra Decree. Some historians believe that members of Columbus’s expedition were Jewish, while others claim that Columbus himself may have had Jewish roots. Columbus was likely an acquaintance of Rav Don Yitzchok Abarbanel, as both frequented the royal court


of Ferdinand and Isabella. However, Columbus was guilty of perpetrating gruesome atrocities against Native Americans. He enslaved many natives and subjected others to extreme cruelty. Columbus is considered a hero by Americans of European descent, but is regarded as a villain by Native Americans. GEORGE WASHINGTON: The American Revolution

heralded an era of freedom and democracy for American patriots. Washington’s leadership set the tone for future peaceful transfers of power and helped establish acceptance of religious liberty. In his famous letter to the Jews of Newport, Rhode Island, he wrote: “For happily the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens, in giving it on all occasions their effectual support.” However, Washington himself owned slaves, and most black slaves in America at the time of the Revolution viewed the British as their saviors and the patriots as their oppressors. Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, a Pennsylvania pastor, wrote that the black population “secretly wished the British army might win,” and that “it is said that this sentiment is universal among the Negroes of America.” THOMAS JEFFERSON: An icon of democracy and author

of the Declaration of Independence, he famously wrote: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Yet Jefferson himself owned slaves. The Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C., includes a quote from Jefferson saying: “Nothing is more certainly written in the book of fate than that these people are to be free.” Yet the builders of the memorial conveniently omitted the remainder of the quote: “Nor is it less certain that the two races, equally free, cannot live in the same government. Nature, habit, opinion has drawn indelible lines of distinction between them.” GENERAL ROBERT E. LEE: An American hero of the Mexican-American War, he assumed command of the Confederate Army. As commander, General Lee pledged to do all in his power “to facilitate the duties of their religion by the Israelites in the [Confederate] Army.” Lee’s personal views on slavery were somewhat nuanced, and he freed the slaves that his wife inherited based on his father-in-law’s will. Yet Lee chose to command the army that fought to protect southern slave owners’ rights to enslave black people. JUDAH P. BENJAMIN: The first Jewish Senator represented his home state of Louisiana, and he rose to prominence as Secretary of War and Secretary of State of the Confederacy. His image was featured on the two-dollar Confederate bill. His political status was unparalleled for an American Jew, yet he chose to support the South and the continuation of the institution of slavery.

GENERAL ULYSSES S. GRANT: The Commander of the

Union Army, Grant was responsible for what is arguably the most anti-Semitic edict ever issued in the United States. His General Orders #11 expelled the Jews from the department of the Tennessee and gave Jews 48 hours to vacate their homes and properties. President Lincoln rescinded Grant’s order. As president, Grant attempted to make amends by being supportive of Jewish causes and by advocating for positions helpful to the Jewish community. He named more Jews to public office than any president before, and he developed a strong relationship with Chaim Zvi Schneersohn, a grandson of the Baal haTanya. He promoted the human rights of Jewish people abroad, and he protested pogroms in Romania by sending Benjamin Franklin Peixotto, a Jewish diplomat, to act as American ambassador to Bucharest. THEODORE ROOSEVELT: A hero of the Spanish-Ameri-

can War, the 26th president developed a strong connection with the Jewish community when he served as New York City police commissioner and governor of New York State. When anti-Semitic German preacher, Hermann Ahlwardt, held a rally in New York, Roosevelt assigned several dozen Jewish police officers to protect Ahlwardt, thus “mak[ing] him [look] ridiculous.” He was the first president to appoint a Jew to a cabinet position and was a vocal supporter of the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine. His “The Man in the Arena” speech remains a classic until today. However, regarding Native Americans, Roosevelt famously asserted that “the most vicious cowboy has more moral principle than the average Indian,” and “I don’t go so far as to think that the only good Indians are the dead Indians, but I believe nine out of every ten are.” ANALYSIS: American history’s trajectory is perceived dif-

ferently through the prism of each ethnicity’s national experience. The events that one group chooses to highlight or ignore are based on each ethnic group’s experiences. The social unrest rocking America is a product of this dual narrative. It is also clear that one cannot judge figures of the past based on today’s societal norms. What we consider bigoted by today’s standards may have been an enlightened and progressive viewpoint in Colonial America. THE IMPACT: President Trump is gambling that his message of unapologetic American pride will resonate with voters. However, it appears that many in the country are taking the opposite track. Mississippi lawmakers voted to retire the State of Mississippi flag that prominently features the Confederate Battle Flag. The State of Rhode Island removed the name Providence Plantations from its official correspondence. The City of Richmond, Virginia, removed its statue of Stonewall Jackson. Sports teams have announced plans to change names that are considered racially insensitive. Finally, the Senate passed a bipartisan defense spending bill that requires the Pentagon to rename military bases named for Confederate war heroes, but President Trump has threatened to veto the bill. It remains to be seen how this will play out in terms of votes come November.

Caprese Pizza This pizza serves up bright and summery flavors, and is so easy to prepare.

Ingredients

Garlic Eggplant Pizza Eggplant lovers, this one’s calling your name.

Ingredients 2 large Brooklyn Bred pizza crusts

2 large Brooklyn Bred pizza crusts

1 medium eggplant

Pizza sauce

¼ cup flour

9 oz. ball of fresh mozzarella

½ tsp. salt

3–4 plum tomatoes

¼ tsp. black pepper

Salt, pepper and garlic powder, to taste

¼ cup + 1 T. olive oil

Olive oil, for drizzling Handful of fresh basil leaves

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 400°. 2. Spread pizza sauce over pizza crusts. Lay thin slices of mozzarella and tomatoes on top of it, overlapping slightly. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder and a drizzle of olive oil. 3. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and top with fresh basil. Serve hot.

Pizza sauce Pizza cheese 4 cloves garlic, crushed

Directions 1. Slice eggplant into ½-inch rounds. Sprinkle with salt and let sit for 20 to 30 minutes to remove bitterness. Rinse and pat dry. 2. Mix flour, salt and pepper, and dip both sides of eggplant rounds into the mixture, shaking to remove excess. Arrange eggplant slices on a baking sheet, and brush both sides liberally with ¼ cup olive oil. Bake at 400° for 45 minutes, flipping once halfway through. 3. Spread pizza sauce on pizza crusts. Top with cheese. Arrange eggplant slices over cheese. Mix crushed garlic with 1 tablespoon olive oil, and drizzle over pizza. Bake for 15 minutes.

I was loath to start a Monseywide groan-fest though, so I quit while I was ahead. I’d do anything to avoid a hairy moment, you see... Wry puns or not, hair care can easily fuel a daylong conversation among us females, particularly if you’re in a rather happening age bracket. Yes, teens, I’m eyeballing you! Why, I fondly recall one of my own best school days way back when. Last day of school? No. Early dismissal? Not either. It was just a good hair day. What I didn’t know then was that there’s sense and science to those strands. And hope, too! No matter which side of the brush you’re on, whether you’re struggling to tame your own mane or trying to get a wriggling daughter to sit still so you can get that pony holder in, now you can pack yourself a full arsenal of tips and secrets that’ll make for healthier, happier hair.

YOUR HAIR AND YOU You need to get to know your hair, but first, say yes to loving it. Isn’t it mind-blowing to see the way Hashem matched your skin tone and hair color? The two are the perfect shidduch! Quick exercise: Approach that trusty mirror and acquaint yourself with your hair type. The first step to giving your hair what it needs is knowing what type of hair you have. Like primary colors, there are four basic hair types — and oodles of subtypes. Is it straight, wavy, curly or kinky? Trace its pattern from root to tip. Notice its growth and how much curl, or lack

Two: No matter your hair type, you should not shampoo every day. (Yikes! Is that all of you coming at me?) Relax. It’s not gross. Skipping a shampoo just lets your hair thrive in its natural process and fare better. Say hello to sebum, your natural conditioner that travels down your hair strands and locks in moisture. A lack of sebum gives you dry, brittle hair that is prone to damage, breakage, and the most ferocious hair foe of all: frizz! Frequent washing is what strips your hair of sebum too quickly, causing your hair to either dry out, or your scalp to go into overdrive and ratchet up the sebum production, giving you limp, oily strands. So what’s a girl to do? Take a deep breath, and rinse or use conditioner between thorough washes. Your hair will thank you for it. Another vital piece of advice is to eat healthy and drink a lot. Eating iron-rich foods and enough protein will boost your body’s stash of vitamins and proteins, which it needs to get full, vibrant hair growing. And now we are ready to run for the bottles and brushes!

So you have perfectly straight tresses? Delight! But hang on just a second before you swing them over your shoulder to pass GO and collect 200. Because you, too, need to nourish your hair properly. Since your strands are so straight, sebum has a splendid time making its way downward, so tighten your watch for extra oil and fight it! Is your hair sweet and fine? So fine, in fact, that it lies quietly and softly on your head and pretends it isn’t there? Try these tips; they’re hair-raising. 1. Your fine hair may be the only exception to the rule of not shampooing daily. Look for light shampoos and conditioners marked for volume and daily use. Check out the Ion brand; they have fantastic products. 2. Never apply conditioner directly to your roots; it’ll weigh them down. Start from the bottom and lather until halfway up. 3. Go gentle on the drying; blot, rather than rub, with a towel. 4. Use a texturizing spray to add body and hold.

WAVE OFF THE HALO!

That halo. It’s always the halo, coming to ruin a perfectly good hairdo. Why do wavies get crowned with that infamous halo of frizz whenever there’s a drop of moisture in the air? Simple. Your hair is thirsty. And that is why wavies and curlies are often frizzies — hair that curls tends to be dry. And if your poor locks haven’t gotten enough to drink, and there’s water in the air, you can bet they’ll just reach out and help themselves! Here’s how to rid your waves of frizz without weighing them down: Focus on the moisture your hair craves. Check out shampoos and conditioners that are designed to hydrate and moisturize. Give your hair the benefits of a natural sebum buildup by shampooing twice a week; you can always use conditioner on non-shampoo days. While you’re at it, use warm water rather than hot, and rinse with cold. Not so fun, but worth it, because heat dries your hair out. Says hair and wig stylist Blimy Kraus: “Use separate shampoo and conditioner. Your hair will benefit way more from two separate processes.” So happy lathering! Prevent a frizzy mess by combing with a wide-tooth comb while washing instead of brushing dry. When you do brush, go gentle, or your hair will stand up to protest!

And you gotta love this one: Switch the towel you use to dry your hair. Your trusty terry absorbs too much moisture in exchange for nastiness like friction and tangles. Use a microfiber towel — or even a Tshirt! — to gently blot your hair dry. When your hair’s nice and damp and ready for the blower or iron, mind the heat. Keep it at the lowest temp that you can, use a heat-protectant spray or leave-in conditioner, and end your session with a blast of cold air. You can also use the leave-in anytime as a hair moisturizer. I can almost hear your objection: This routine is all fine and good, you’re thinking, but what about when I’m in the thick of the humid heat, helplessly shaking my frizzy head?

FRIZZ, BEGONE! • No More Tangles — remember that? That detangling spray your mother used on you as a kid can work magic in a frizzy emergency. • Raid the laundry shelf. But in a pinch, it can tame your flyaways. Just rub a drop between your hands and lightly smooth over the troublesome areas.

CALMING YOUR CURLS

Are you ready to snub convention and restock your shower shelf? Do you want to rid your dry curls of harsh chemicals and damaging heat-styling? Then the Curly Girl Method is for you. The method itself was devised by someone with curly hair who had time to write a book on it. Talk about passion! The goal is to let your hair find its balance and just be, without products and methods to damage it. To start, there are four things you need to avoid: 1. Sulfates in shampoos. They clean well, but eat your hair’s moisture. Use sulfate-free shampoos only. (Some sulfate-free ideas: L’Oreal EverPure, Garnier Fructis Curl Nourish) 2. Silicones in conditioners. They do such a good job smoothing your hair that they block moisture from getting in. Use conditioners that are silicone-free, or check the ingredient list. Anything that contains an ingredient ending in “-cone” gotta go. Siliconefree doesn’t have to be pricey; even some Suaves and V05s qualify. 3. Heat treatment. Yup, a real tough one! But if you want to really follow this through, you’ll need to put your iron away. 4. Also, brushes. They’re really not your curls’ friend.

Before you start, give your hair a final wash with a sulfate-containing shampoo to give your hair a clean slate by ridding it of any silicone buildup. Now, are you ready? Here’s the basic method, as heard from Suri, a vivacious teen with springy hair who manages to get her hair marching to her beat. When I asked if she’d heard of the method, she said she had not; she just seemed to have intuitively been following much of the Curly Girl

Method because it simply made sense. She just skipped the tedious part of minding her hair products! Suri’s hair regimen: “So first I wash with Tresemme Curl Hydrate (not CG-approved, sorry!). I rinse and then condition with Tresemme conditioner, which I leave in for a few minutes. I fingercomb to lather the conditioner (this is the only form of combing or brushing I do), and then rinse it off with cold water. Later, I add mousse and scrunch it in with my fingers, and I wait until it’s stiff before I go to sleep. In the morning, I spray my hair with water and scrunch it again. I use mousse every day.” The only thing missing here is a clarifying shampoo, which is a must for every hair type. Clarifying shampoo deep-cleans your hair of sebum and hair-product buildup. Just make sure it’s sulfate-free, and you’re good to go! Before you’re up in arms claiming your hair’s the same old even after trying the new method, know this: It may take months until your hair gets the memo. After all, you’ve been doing things differently for years! Eventually, patience and persistence will get you places.

PEACE UNTO THY HAIR

Nothing sounds more like Shabbos prep in a house full of girls than the cheerful bickering over the curling iron and blow dryer, whose whir soon competes with the sound of the Shabbos siren. And hours later, nothing’s more frustrating than contorting in positions never yet known to man, all to avoid the unavoidable messedup hairdo on Shabbos morning. Well, girls, you can stop sleeping on your foreheads. Sleep on silk instead! The smoothness of the fabric will cause less friction, which translates into more straightness and less frizz. I asked Blimy for Shabbos hair tips, and she laughed and said, “Don’t touch!” Halacha is on your side with this one, and besides not mistakenly tearing out hair, you won’t feed it the oil from your fingertips. Throw your head forward and then back, gather your hair with that beautiful clip, and fuggedaboutit! I was five years old when I decided it was time for bangs. My mother, though, didn’t agree. Sneaky me, however, discovered a pair of scissors lying temptingly in the bathroom cabinet. A few quick snips later, and the job was done. I was quite pleased with myself... until I looked down and saw a sink full of hair, which promptly led to panic. I quickly turned on the water and tried to wash away the strands of hair — because in my young mind, I somehow assumed that if I destroyed the evidence of my misdeeds, it meant that I’d never actually done it in the first place… When everything was all cleaned up, I walked out of the bathroom and was ready to heave a sigh of relief. That sigh never came — but the shrieks of shock and the peals of laughter surely did! At that moment I was hit with a dose of reality: My cleanup effort hadn’t worked. It didn’t take too long, I assume, for the excitement over my juvenile barbering attempts to die down, but I can’t

honestly say how long that took, for I had run outside in utter mortification and locked myself into a trailer sitting in our driveway, where I insisted on spending the rest of the night... Oh, admit it: I’m not alone! You’ve probably had your own hair horror or two. And you’re in good company. Here are a few more tales of those who’ve had their locks beaten and battered. Please note: Names of protagonists have been changed to prevent their suffering further embarrassment.

Sleek. Smooth. Silky. Ahh, perfect hair. The dream. And it was a dream I was out to achieve. My regular routine involved waking up at 5:30 every morning to ensure that I’d have ample time to style my hair before heading off to begin my day. I’d wash it, dry it and iron it flat. It was quite the chore. One day my friend mentioned that she’d done a Japanese straightening, and a little light bulb went off in my head: This would be the timesaving solution I didn’t even know I was seeking! No longer would I need to awake at the crack of dawn and blow-dry my hair for a half-hour every morning; no more would I watch my hair sizzle, sandwiched between the two sides of the flat iron — I’d just get a straightening! Never mind that I’d have to shlep out to the middle of nowhere and spend a fortune to have powerful chemicals slathered over my head; my hair would be straight! But when I walked out of the salon with freshly straightened hair, I felt a bit skeptical. Something didn’t feel quite… dreamlike. My hair was certainly straight, but maybe… too straight? Like wooden boards framing my face, my super-straight hair lacked a certain vitality. I calmed myself by thinking that it would take a wash or two, and then my hair would be gorgeous. Here’s what actually happened: My new routine involved waking up at 5:30 every morning to ensure that I’d have ample time to style my hair before heading off to begin my day. I’d wash it, dry it and instead of flat-ironing it, I’d curl the ends in, to make it look slightly more natural. That absurd super-straight look lasted until my chasunah. The woman who styled my hair for kabbalas panim worked mighty hard to make my hair hold a curl! Pictures taken right before the badeken show a few brave curls that had fought to hold their shape… and plenty of stick-straight strands, preserved forever by the camera’s lens.

I was getting rather frustrated with my son’s stringy peyos that never seemed to hold a curl. No matter what I did, they’d always come undone and fly about his face, causing him to look very disheveled. It’s time for a perm! I thought to myself, thrilled with my genius. What could be better than having his hair remain curled, with no mess and no fuss? When we arrived for our appointment, the man who’d be doing my son’s perm examined his hair and told me that because the hairs are so thin, he’d keep the solution on it for only half the time that he usually does. Wow, he really knows what he’s doing! I told myself. Famous last words. When we walked out, my son had curly peyos… but they were so rough, so frizzy. Must be part of the deal; frizzy but curlable, I assumed. When I gave him his first shampoo, I tried applying conditioner to soften them up a bit, but they still felt horribly coarse. The worst, though, was yet to come… Two days after his peyos perm, my son got into a tiff with a neighbor, who grabbed one of his peyos and yanked. He came running inside, crying, and after taking one look at him, I thought I’d pass out. Half of one peyah was missing! There was a one-inch-wide bald spot where his peyah had been tugged. For days after, more and more hair was shed each time his hair was brushed. A little research led me to learn that the chemicals used in a perm can damage the roots, resulting in hair loss. No more perms for us!

When my son came home from school with tears in his eyes and a bright orange comb wrapped hopelessly in one of his peyos, I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “What did you do?!” I exclaimed. “I was trying to curl them,” his innocent four-year-old voice proclaimed, a little wobbly, as if he were choking back tears. (He was.) I’ll admit, I was terrified that we’d have to snip his hair off — that’s how badly enmeshed it was within the comb! YOUR SEWING GUIDE 1. Measure a strand of thread that’s double the length of the cut fabric, and thread it into a needle.

2. Double the thread, and tie the ends with a loop knot.

3. Start at one end of the fabric, and sew in an inand-out motion to create the “running stitch.”

4. When you reach the end of the seam, knot the thread by pulling the thread halfway through (with the needle) to create a loop. Bring the needle and thread through the loop, and pull.

Fabric for the scrunchie: 1. Cut a piece of fabric that measures 22 by 4 inches. 2. Fold it in half lengthwise so that the reverse of the fabric is showing. 3. Using a safety pin (or just your fingers), slide the fabric through itself (like you would do to a sock when folding a pair) to turn it right-side out.

Often, it doesn’t take much to lift the spirits of those around us, yet these small gestures can go a long way for another Yid. Let’s examine the way our gedolim, despite schedules packed full with learning and public matters, bent down to hearten the “little” Yid. They set an example that each of us can reach — if only we stretch tall. ENCOURAGEMENT Life wasn’t easy in the Levy home. For Itzik, it meant coming home from cheder to an empty house every day. For his mother, it meant working long hours as a housekeeper to support her orphaned children. And they just about scraped by. Itzik was a rather content boy who accepted his lot gracefully; he knew his mother really tried to give him all she could. Yet deep inside, he harbored a dream. The dream of wearing brandnew clothes. Realistically speaking, Itzik knew it was asking too much of his already burdened mother. But he couldn’t help but drop hints. And Mrs. Levy deciphered them. Her heart ached with desire to fulfill her son’s valid wish, and she began saving up, bit by bit. Just before Rosh Hashanah, Mrs. Levy took the envelope to the store and purchased a brand-new white shirt for Itzik. Itzik was absolutely delighted. Removing the pins, he hung the shirt opposite his bed and fell asleep with a smile on his lips. Finally, he, too, would be the lucky wearer of new clothes! With a spring in his step, Itzik rushed off to shul on Rosh Hashanah night. He waited for his friends to comment on his new garment, but to his dismay, no one even noticed it. Leav-

ing shul, he passed a crowd on the street and discovered that they were chassidim waiting to be granted a bracha for a “gut gebentched yahr” from the Beis Yisroel of Gur. Without much thought, he squeezed between two men, figuring he, too, could use a bracha on this auspicious night. The men trooped past the Rebbe in single file, each one meriting to hold out his hand before the Beis Yisroel for mere seconds before moving on. Finally it was Itzik’s turn. As he passed, the Rebbe placed his hands on his own shirt collar and motioned to Itzik as if to say, “Nice!” Itzik was elated. Someone had noticed his new shirt! And it wasn’t just “someone”; it was the great Gerrer Rebbe, leader of multitudes, who singled him out at a time when throngs of men were passing by the minute. It was a split-second gesture. Yet the empathy and compassion revitalized his spirit. Throughout his remaining childhood years, the vision of validation and support from this great personage rewarmed Itzik’s heart time and again. Ber was aware of just how special this young talmid chacham was. However, to Reb Chaim Pinchas’ surprise, Reb Boruch Ber declined to give him the requested semicha. The reason for the refusal was not personal — it was simply a matter of principle. One needed to learn under Reb Boruch Ber’s tutelage for a minimum of two and a half years to earn the coveted document. A short while after Reb Chaim Pinchas left the Rosh Yeshivah’s home, Reb Boruch Ber asked his talmidim to run after the young man and bring him back. It was urgent that Reb Chaim Pinchas return before he arrived home, Reb Boruch Ber said. Reb Boruch Ber immediately issued the ksav semicha, and Reb Chaim Pinchas was once again sent on his way. The close talmidim who witnessed the scene were puzzled. Why did their Rosh Yeshivah deviate from his custom? And why the rush in pursuing the young man? Reb Boruch Ber explained: “Reb Chaim Pinchas is newly married. I’m sure that as soon as he returns home, his young wife will want to know if he received the ksav semicha. When she will hear that he did not, she will be distressed, even before he has a chance to explain to her the reason for the refusal.” Rather than cause an ounce of anguish that might stand in the way of a budding shalom bayis, Reb Boruch Ber was ready to override his standard practice — and in a hurry!

Still, Yossi had no idea how to reply. “Tomorrow, in yeshivah, I want you to ask your rebbi this question,” Reb Moshe told the bachur. “See what he says.” Yossi’s fingers were trembling as he replaced the receiver in its base. A peek at his watch revealed that he had taken a full hour of the posek hador’s time — and in the middle of the night, no less! When Yossi threw the question at his rebbi the following morning, the rebbi was taken aback. This kushya, coming from one of his weaker students, was sharp! He asked for some time to think about it and only came back to Yossi with clarification a couple of days later. The episode was a turning point in Yossi’s life. If Reb Moshe believes in me so, he thought to himself, how can I not believe in myself? Replaying the vision of the gadol hador’s confidence in him over again and again, the boy began to apply himself to his studies. As a successful maggid shiur today, Yossi’s mission is to inspire his students to believe in themselves and in their ability to reach their full potential if only they try.

was organized immediately. Dedicated volunteers combed the area during the day and through the night, yet the boy was nowhere to be found. All of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday passed in this manner. When Reb Yakov Yosef of Skver heard the dire news, he was visibly distressed. Finding no peace, the Rebbe got in touch with the child’s melamed, Reb Mordechai Feder, and begged to be kept informed of every detail as it became known. “Please call with any updates,” he asked. It went so far that when someone called the Rebbe’s court during that period, the Rebbe did not wait for the gabbaim to pick up the phone. Instead, the Rebbe alone ran over to the phone and lifted the receiver. When the caller asked to whom he was speaking, the Rebbe replied, “the Skverer Rebbe’s son.” The days passed in a haze of anguish and diminishing hope. The prospect of finding the boy alive and well despite the hot summer season was waning. Finally, during Shabbos day, the boy was found! The news reached the Rebbe’s court via a gentile who repeated that he’d heard the news on the radio. The Rebbe was nearing the end of his midday tish when they rushed to inform him of the wonderful developments. His joy was great. A number of years later, this very boy came to visit Rebbetzin Trany. She told him, “Do you know that because of you the Rebbe did not take a morsel of food into his mouth for three days?! The Rebbe fasted for three days out of worry for your well-being…” It’s easy to accept every incident that reaches our ears as a piece of news. It’s an art to perceive the pain of another Yid that lies beneath the newsflash.

Over the years, there have been many mishaps when individuals have set out on trails improperly prepared or clothed or have conducted themselves in an unsafe manner while hiking, requiring search-and-rescue teams to take to the woods and bring them back to safety. SAFETY POINTERS Proper packing: Never leave for a hike without a proper knapsack equipped with enough water, charged cell phones, navigation devices, flashlights, emergency shelter, a first-aid kit, and some ready-to-eat, non-perishable nutrition options. Proper planning: Before leaving the trailhead, acquire a map, study it well, and know your route. Always check the weather before heading out. It gets dark in the woods around sunset, so make sure you leave enough time to get out safely. If there is a park ranger at the trailhead, check in with the ranger before heading out. Proper footgear: Remember to change into proper footgear, appropriate for the terrain, prior to setting out. Hikers should never hike alone, and should always share their plans with someone outside of the hiking group before heading out. Stay on track. Read and follow all markers and do not veer off the trail. Always check for ticks after a hike.

PARKING: Park at the parking lot on Johnsontown Road. If your GPS allows it, you can enter the coordinates 41.1714, -74.1766 as the location. Otherwise, you can route to 67 Johnsontown Road, Sloatsburg, NY, and your GPS will take you pretty close to the parking lot. The lot (410’ elevation) is a small roadside parking spot that has room for only four cars. (See photo of the lot; it is easy to miss.) There is no parking along Johnsontown Road. If you are hiking on a Sunday, come early! If the parking lot is full, there is more parking 0.9 miles down to the end of Johnsontown Road, but then you will need to walk to the parking lot. Please note that the viewpoints are steep drops, and these are not places where you can let children run around! THE TRAIL: On the left side of the parking lot, you will see the beginning of the Orange Trail. The beginning of the trail is marked as three blazes on a rock (see photo). Follow the orange markers on the trees and rocks up the mountain. After 0.1 mile, look carefully and you will see the beginning of the Blue Trail on the left. Don’t go left — continue on the Orange Trail as it curves to the right. (We will return via this Blue Trail.) The Orange Trail continues up the mountain and views will open up on your right (see map). The first view off a large rock on the right is partially obstructed by tree growth and is a good spot to rest before continuing. The trail then goes down and up again next to a rock wall and curves to the right. You can rest at any of the rocky viewpoints on the right. After about 0.5 miles you will reach the highest point (700’ elevation), and the trail will start to go downhill. Continue about 0.2 miles to the intersection of the Orange and Blue trails. Make a left on the Blue Trail. (Be careful not to miss this as it is not so well marked. You will see the end of the Blue Trail marker on the right, and you need to make a left! If you continue on the Orange Trail, it will

take you into Harriman State Park, and the Orange Trail will end at the White Trail. If you end up at the White Trail, it means you have missed the turn and you need to turn around and return to the intersection of the Orange and Blue trails.) Follow the Blue Trail, which turns into a road in the woods as it goes along the mountain ridge. Along the way, after 0.8 miles, you will see what looks like a white sand beach (or snow) on your left. A closer look will reveal that this is some sort of fungus growing on leaves in a swampy area. Be careful to get back onto the trail if you take a look; do not go onto the wooded path. Continuing on the Blue wooded road, you will reach numerous viewpoints that overlook the Thruway and power lines. For most of this hike, you will have quiet solitude and hear only birds and squirrels, but at this point, you will have to put up with the sound of cars. Continue on the Blue Trail and look out for some views on your right. After one of the viewpoints, the wooded road will turn back into a path. The path then curves to the left, and there is one spot where it goes over a rock outcrop (careful here!). Continue down the mountain, making sure you see blue blaze marks the entire time until you meet the Orange Trail. (This is the point we mentioned earlier.) BEHIND THE NAME “Lego” is a contraction of the two Danish words leg godt, which means “play well.”

HOW IT BEGAN

CHANGE TO PLASTIC BRICKS

Ole Kirk Kristiansen started the Lego Company 88 years ago, in 1932. Since then, the company has been passed down in the family and is now owned by his grandson, Kjed Kirk Kristiansen. Today, the fourth-generation Kristiansen, Thomas, is being primed to take over the family business, and he now serves as deputy chairman of the company.

Another warehouse fire struck the Lego Group in 1960, burning most of the company’s wooden toys. Plastic was a new concept in toy-making at that time, but after this second fire, the company decided that the plastic line was strong enough for them to consider abandoning the production of wooden toys.

The Lego company started out as a small carpenter’s shop, where parts of houses and furniture were constructed. When their workshop burned down after a fire ignited some small wooden shavings, Ole Kirk built an even bigger workshop and worked hard to expand his construction business. Then the Great Depression hit. People lost their livelihoods, and Ole Kirk had very few customers. He began working on smaller projects, and in order to attract customers, he created miniature versions of his work. Ultimately, these mini models of ironing boards and stepladders inspired him to begin producing toys!

EXPANDING THE COMPANY In 1961, Lego wanted to expand sales to North America but did not have the ability to do so. Instead, they made an arrangement with the popular company Samsonite to begin producing and selling Lego products in the United States and Canada.

CUSTOMIZED LEGO WHEELCHAIR GETS TURTLE THROUGH POST-OPERATIVE RECOVERY By: Sandy Eller

It may technically be marketed as a creative building toy for children, but it was Lego to the rescue as Baltimore veterinarians used the iconic plastic bricks to help an injured turtle through a lengthy recuperation. USA Today reported that doctors at the Maryland Zoo were faced with a dilemma after surgically repairing multiple fractures on the bottom shell of an 18-year-old eastern box turtle that roamed the grounds of Druid Hill Park. The turtle’s underside had to be kept off the ground to facilitate healing, but it was important for the turtle to remain mobile during the nearly two-year-long recovery period. The solution, quite literally, was child’s play, with doctors constructing a Lego wheelchair whose plastic brick frame was attached to four Lego wheels. The entire apparatus was connected to the turtle’s upper shell using plumber’s putty. “They don’t make turtle-sized wheelchairs,” quipped Garrett

cated at Druid Hill Park, will continue to track the patient and his movements through a transmitter attached to his shell. “This turtle has made tremendous progress in shell-healing over the last two years,” said Bronson. “From his successful use of a Lego wheelchair as a mobility aid early in his recovery to now, he has been a unique zoo patient. It was a joy for our veterinary team to watch him return to his native habitat.”
