Do all the good you can…

This time last year I reflected on another extraordinary year, and in many ways the same could be said for the past twelve months, although for different reasons.

Our world is in turmoil and the impact of the devastating war in Ukraine has been widespread, we face a cost of living crisis, and as a nation are coming to terms with the death of our monarch, who has been the constant in all our lives.

We continue to live in troubled and unsettling times, and as an organisation we haven’t been immune from that sense of unease. The decision of Northern Ireland District to seek to be a separate autonomous body has been greeted with sadness by many of us, and the sale of Felden Lodge is difficult for some to accept.

However, amongst all the difficulties, I believe there is always hope, and the chance to embrace new opportunities, and the signs of that is what I hold on to.

I have been encouraged with the way Companies have embraced our programme resources: seeing the way the resources about Ukraine and the death of HM The Queen have been used by leaders to tackle difficult subjects has been inspiring.

The way in which leaders responded to the Company Census has also been encouraging. It is great that leaders used the process to reflect on the way their Company is operating and to build an action plan for the future. The findings also indicate our strategy to improve the quality of experience for children and young people is in tune with the priorities identified by leaders. The findings from the Census are highlighted in the Vision article of this Gazette.

It was great to join with young leaders earlier in the Autumn to launch our Young Leaders Network. This is the first step in ensuring young leaders have the opportunity

to shape our organisation as well as being its voice.

The Queen’s death was a significant moment in the life of our nation and a landmark moment for our organisation too, as we recall the seventy years Her Majesty has been our Patron. It was an immense privilege to attend the State Funeral at Westminster Abbey and to join with people from across the nation and wider world in remembering the selfless service to others to which the Queen dedicated her life, rooted so firmly in the Christian faith.

It reminds me of the words of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church: “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can!”

This was certainly the way the Queen lived her life and is something we can all aspire to.

At this time of year, we naturally start to think ahead, whether that is to a period of holiday and time spent with family and friends, the possibilities of a new year, or as Christians in the expectation and wonder that comes with celebrating the birth of Jesus.

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)

With very best wishes for the year ahead and all the opportunity it will provide.

WELCOME 04 GAZETTE - SPRING 2023

A lifetime of service

The death of HM The Queen was sudden but not completely unexpected at the age of 96 years.

As I was thinking about her lifetime of service, I recalled our conversation as I received my MBE for services to The Boys’ Brigade, when she asked me “How is The Boys’ Brigade?”.

The late Queen was always interested in what the children and young people of our great organisation were involved in. Many of you may well have had a conversation with her as well and many of you will be Queen’s Badge holders.

At our recent AGM I had the privilege of reading out Her Majesty’s response to our loyal greeting. Our late Patron was always interested in our achievements.

So, it’s a time of sadness, a time of reflection and a time to give thanks to God for the Queen. It reminds me of another great Queen: Esther, Queen of Babylon. If you know the Bible story, Esther replaced Queen Vashti and marries King Xerxes.

“The king loved Esther more than all the other women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so, he set the royal crown upon her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.” (Esther 2:17)

The story of Esther inspires us because God uses her and has her go from an orphan to a powerful Queen. Hers is truly a story that shows us that God can take anyone and place them in an influential position of power.

God had a purpose for putting Esther in a place of royalty. He wanted her to save her people from destruction. We can learn from the characteristics of Esther and apply the lessons in our lives. Esther was a gracious woman who taught us that God uses us for the purposes of his kingdom.

I believe I am called to serve God in The Boys’ Brigade,

an organisation I have been in for over 60 years, and I hope and pray all our leaders feel they are serving God week in week out as we strive to advance Christ’s kingdom.

Please continue with the work you do and maybe some of the children and young people in your care, in the future, will feel called to serve God in the Brigade and beyond.

I urge you all at this time to pray for The Boys’ Brigade, pray for a new Patron and pray for King Charles III, remembering that King Jesus is listening.

THE WAY I SEE IT

Drew Buchanan MBE is Chair of the Brigade Executive (our Trustees). He has been married to Karen for 42 years and they have three children, at one time all serving in a BB Company. Drew has been Captain at three different Companies and has recently stood down after 13 years as a Battalion President. Drew is a great believer in delegation, and also believes all leaders should be looking out now for the person to replace them.

VISION SHAPING THE FUTURE TOGETHER

06 GAZETTE - SPRING 2023

Why a census?

As we emerge from an incredibly challenging last few years, we wanted to understand what is happening in Companies across the country; what is working and what is not; what the challenges are but also the opportunities that exist.

We wanted to establish a clear picture of where The Boys’ Brigade is today that will help shape the support and resources provided for leaders.

Of course, we know that on topics of any significance there will be a wide range of views. You’ll find a spectrum of opinions within Companies, Battalions, Districts, Regions and so on.

This was however a census rather than a survey, so the questions were generally more factual in nature rather than asking for opinions. Over 120 questions were included, grouped into categories including programme, development/health, Church partnerships, community relations, finance and support provided to Companies.

Whether you agree with every decision the Brigade makes, we are striving to be a data driven, evidencebased organisation – led and directed by the needs of leaders and Companies.

It was encouraging that over 800 Companies took part in the Census, representing nearly three-quarters of all Companies, providing a fairly strong representation from across the organisation.

It was important that the information collected through the Census was independently analysed to provide us with a genuine sense check against our Strategic Plan –to ensure that the aims and ambitions of our current fiveyear strategy are still the right ones, and to learn what we can build upon and what we might do differently.

Company Health

Significant numbers of Anchors and Juniors age groups have experienced growth in membership over the last three years. However, many Companies continue to see declining membership with around one-third “struggling or at risk of closure”.

Q. Q.

How would you rate the current overall health of your Company?

Despite the challenges there is also a lot of optimism with more Companies believing they will be stronger in five years’ time than those who think they will be weaker or have closed.

Thinking ahead, how do you see the health of your Company in five years’ time?

Our Company Health Check is a quick and easy tool which is designed to help leaders think about their Company’s strengths and areas for development, and to assist in setting goals for the Company.

07 Article Continued @BBGAZETTE | BOYS-BRIGADE.ORG.UK/GAZETTE
In Spring 2022 we asked leaders to complete our first-ever Company Census.
Strong Stable Struggling At Risk Stronger Similar Weaker Closed

90% of Companies report that new programme resources have had a positive impact on planning, delivery and quality of their activities.

Which of the resources have you used?

Church partnership

As a Christian youth organisation the partnership between Company and partner Church is of fundamental importance.

However, it probably comes as no surprise that these relationships vary widely. In some cases the relationship is strong and involvement is high, but in others it seems more limited.

There was a clear concern expressed in the Census about the health and future of the partner Church. Most Companies are partnered with Churches with average weekly attendances of 60 people and below.

Q.

Thinking about the congregation of the Church your Company is part of,

what is the average weekly attendance?

65% of Companies offer a trip/outing at least once per session. The biggest barrier to residentials taking place is lack of leader availability.

Most leaders regularly meet as a team for planning – 59% at least once per term. Positively, 75% of Companies involve children and young people in their programme planning.

Our Programme Hub contains all of our termly Activity Cards, a range of Activity Sheets as well as Programme Planners for each age group. You can pick and choose what works for your Company, and the resources can be adapted to suit your children and young people.

78% of Companies benefit from the input of a Chaplain – interestingly a lot more than are registered with BB Headquarters as Chaplains who we are able to keep in contact with.

Finance

The data from the Census suggests a lack of finance does not appear to be a major concern for most Companies.

The Census did highlight that many Companies are providing financial support to their members, something that may become even more important given the current cost of living crisis.

For example, 60% of Companies offer financial assistance for purchase of uniform, while 45% offer support for residentials, trips and fees.

The data also showed that 75% of Companies receive money from grants or other fundraising efforts in their Church or community.

50% of Companies get involved in fundraising for charities either local, national or globally.

Only a small number of Companies say that the majority of their children and young people attend Church regularly. Whilst some may find this concerning, it is worth noting that for many children and young people the BB is therefore their only connection to or involvement with Church, highlighting the important role the BB can play in mission and outreach.

Is your Chaplain registered with us? If not, we would strongly encourage you to get them registered so we can keep them informed. We are aware that a number of Churches do not have a minister; in these circumstances someone else from your Church’s Leadership Team may be willing to act as Chaplain.

Q.

Being an active part of local communities

There are opportunities for Companies to get involved and become active parts of their local community. 38% of Companies describe their community visibility as ‘excellent’ or ‘good’.

How would you describe your Company’s visibility within the local community?

Excellent Good Ok Poor

Interestingly, the biggest barriers that Companies identify to them being more visible in their local communities are a negative perception of BB (44%) and being Church-based (46%).

Facebook is by far the most popular social media channel used by Companies.

The team at BBHQ are on hand to provide any support, guidance or advice that you or your Company might need.

What the Census tells us…

Opportunities for growth do exist, particularly in the Anchors and Juniors age groups.

The relative weakness of partner Churches is clearly a challenge for the future, but the data supports BB as a tool for mission and community engagement.

Our greatest challenge is leader recruitment.

Whilst there are some geographically based differences from the Census, none are particularly significant in the data.

There is evidence of progress against our five-year strategy and its focus on improving the consistency and quality of experience offered to children and young people. Organisational investment in our programme has been particularly welcomed by leaders.

Our Open To… Campaign includes a range of resources to support visibility, including recruitment leaflets/posters, social media graphics/videos, taster programmes, press release templates and more.

Support for Companies

In terms of the support provided to Companies there were a series of questions about Battalion/Districts, the largely volunteer-led support structure, as well as questions about the support provided by BBHQ.

Battalions were widely valued by Companies and engagement with activities and services is high. However, around 40% of Companies believe that their Battalion could do more to support them, with a lack of effective young leaders networks noted as being disappointing. In general, Districts are less highly regarded with fewer services and often seen as unnecessary.

Satisfaction levels with support provided by BBHQ is generally very high.

Over 60% of Companies says that they make use of the BBHQ Support Team. There is also a fairly strong uptake of branding resources, the leaders Facebook group and webinars. OBM is generally regarded as having had positive impact on admin, although full use of OBM is patchy with full functionality used by few Companies.

68% of Companies said that completing the Census had helped them reflect on where they are at, with many developing action plans as a result.

Shaping our plans

We have already spent quite a bit of time reflecting on the results of the Census as we have been working on our plans for the third year of the Strategic Plan, in which we will celebrate our 140th anniversary. Focuses will include:

Celebrating our volunteer leaders and leader recruitment

Roll out of Company Management Training

Supporting Chaplains

Young Leaders Network

We will also be sharing key information from the Census with Battalions, which we hope will be helpful in providing direction for the support they provide to their Companies.

We are planning on conducting the Census again in 2025 and then every five years to help to continue to shape the Brigade’s plans.

Brigade Council

Thank you to everyone who joined Brigade Council (our AGM) this year, which took place as an online event.

A summary of the meeting is now available, and the documents which were shared with leaders ahead of Council, including motions and annual accounts remain accessible online.

Check out our Annual Review for 2021/22, which provides an overview of activities and events during last session, at: boys-brigade.org.uk/who-we-are/annual-review

Company Management Training

The role of a Company Captain can be incredibly demanding. It is worth considering whether more shared responsibility for the management of the Company is more realistic, with Leaders-in-Charge of age groups working alongside the Captain and Chaplain to provide a team approach.

Our new Company Management Training, which replaces the previous Captain’s Training, is aimed at both Captains and Leaders-in-Charge and includes:

Planning

Managing & Supporting Your Team, including Safeguarding Developing Your Team Reflective Practice

With no Captain’s Training having been completed since 2020, and the new Company Management Training encouraging attendance from Leaders-in-Charge, a number of courses will be run in 2023 to reach as many people as possible.

See details of upcoming courses and find out more at: boys-brigade.org.uk/events

We are pleased to announce that Brigade Conference 2023 will take place in Glasgow on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd September. Full details will be circulated to leaders and available online in due course.

Felden Lodge update

After an extensive and robust process, the Brigade Executive (our Trustees) have taken the difficult decision to sell the Felden Lodge property.

This decision has not been taken lightly and the ultimate aim is to generate funds to secure the Brigade's finances in the long-term, enabling us to deliver on our strategic objectives.

The contract negotiations are ongoing, but we do know that we will continue to operate the site until at least Summer 2023. Further updates will be provided once the sale has been completed and the timescales are known. In the meantime, staff will continue to be based at Felden Lodge and the Conference & Training Centre will continue to operate.

e-learning

We have had a very positive response to the introduction of e-learning, with a large majority of leaders now having completed our Safeguarding and Managing Risk modules.

The deadline for completion has now passed, so if you have not yet completed the modules we would ask you to do so without delay. e-learning is designed to help leaders develop their skills and refresh their knowledge to ensure we offer a safe and caring environment to children and young people.

The Chief Executive will be writing to leaders who have not completed giving them a final chance to do so. Failure to complete could result in membership being withdrawn and leaders being unable to volunteer within the organisation.

REPORTS AND UPDATES FROM BB HEADQUARTERS

Getting to know our new Brigade Chaplain

sat down with Rev Stewart Cutler to find out a bit more about him.

Besides being the new Brigade Chaplain, what else do you do?

I’m minister of St Ninian’s Church in Stonehouse, South Lanarkshire, so that takes up a fair bit of my time.

When I’m not doing that I’ll be walking my two dogs, Aonghus (Angus) and Magnus. I play a bit of golf and still try to play 7-a-side football. If I’m not playing sport, I’ll probably be watching it on TV or being disappointed by Motherwell FC. I also love to travel and enjoy music – about 100 years ago I was a DJ so music has always been a big part of my life.

How did you end up where you are today?

I used to work for the Church of Scotland and the United Reformed Church, mostly training and support for young people and youth and children’s work. I loved it but I felt called to ministry with a congregation for a long time. Eventually I gave in and here I am… in a Church that is a partnership between the two denominations I worked for. And I love it!

What is the most memorable experience you’ve had in your career?

I’ve been lucky enough to do some incredible things, like take groups of young people to Cuba, Israel and Palestine. The standout has got to be being invited to be Chaplain on KGVI. I did KGVI as a young leader and loved it, but being able to spend two weeks with the most amazing group of young leaders and for them to allow me to both join in with them and to help them deepen their faith was incredible.

My mum, Annis. When I was five, she, along with my dad and some of their friends, set up 4th Carluke. My mum was the one who encouraged me to dream, to be imaginative, and to always try hard at whatever I was doing. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999. She recovered well but later sadly discovered secondary cancer. She died in 2015 and I miss her every day.

What encouragement would you give leaders to help share the good news of Jesus?

There is no more important thing we can do for young people than introduce them to Jesus. We share our faith in so many ways. A kind word, encouragement, helping young people to think something through, opening up the stories of Jesus to them, holding them in prayer. I love the idea that if I follow Christ then the lives of the people around me should be better because I will want to help them, make sure they have all they need and that they can know they are loved.

Stick with it. Often the things that are hard turn out to be the most rewarding.

It’s NEVER as bad as you think it is. Whatever it is that is bothering you… talk to someone about it.

Do everything to the best of your ability. Even the small things… actually, especially the small things.

Your Future Programmes

are pleased to have launched our ‘Your Future’ Programmes, which has been produced in partnership with the University of Bolton to help raise the aspirations of young people in The Boys’ Brigade and support them in exploring, planning and making decisions that will help them become who they want to be.

Rev Dez Johnston, Brigade President, and Baroness Newlove, Pro Vice Chancellor at the University of Bolton, recently visited 35th Liverpool to officially launch the programmes and see some of the activities in action.

Dez said: “We want all our young people to live their best lives and to raise aspirations and these programmes are a great way to bridge the gap between youth education and Higher Education. I have been really impressed with how young people are engaging with it and the feedback so far has been fantastic!”

Baroness Newlove said of the launch event: “It is fantastic to see all these young people getting involved and watching them all having such fun while learning. I was totally blown away by their involvement in understanding aspects of future decisions to go to university. It is crucial to support young people to help them develop and to realise their full potential.”

Find out more about using the Your Future Programmes in our Toolbox article on pages 28-29.

Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA)

The Independent Inquiry into sexual abuse in England and Wales, which was set up after investigations into the Jimmy Savile sexual abuse scandal, revealed widespread abuse across decades and inadequate safeguarding by institutions and organisations responsible for the welfare of children and young people. The inquiry has taken seven years and has made a range of recommendations to better protect children and young people from sexual abuse.

The report on child protection in religious organisations and settings identified failings and concerns across a number of religious organisations including:

Lack of or inadequate Safeguarding and Child Protection Procedures.

Children not being believed, victim blaming, whilst alleged abusers were supported or moved on.

Mistrust and fear of the involvement of statutory agencies with a range of barriers to reporting abuse including concerns about reputational damage.

Abusers taking advantage of a victim’s faith to facilitate abuse and ensure their silence.

Abuse of power by religious leaders.

Religious believers finding it difficult to contemplate that fellow congregation members or religious leaders could perpetrate abuse.

Read more about the Independent Inquiry at: iicsa.org.uk

IICSA’s recommendations include that all organisations have a child protection policy with supporting procedures which includes guidance on responding to allegations of abuse.

The Boys’ Brigade is committed to providing a safe environment for our children and young people, our leaders and staff. The BB has Safeguarding Policies and procedures supported by guidance for leaders. These are reviewed regularly.

The Safeguarding e-learning module and "Keeping Everyone Safe" card were developed to ensure that all leaders know exactly what to do when a child or young person tells them about a safeguarding concern or allegation.

We

Introducing our Young Leaders Network

This new network is an important part of our five-year Strategic Plan and is designed to build the confidence of young leaders (aged 18-26) and provide them with opportunities to grow, develop and share.

What is the Young Leaders Network?

The Young Leaders Network is a platform for young leaders aged 18-26 to be informed, share experiences, build skills and grow as leaders. By investing in young leaders and giving them opportunities to develop, we believe this will help to build the leaders of the future and ensure The Boys’ Brigade can meet the needs of future generations.

The Network was launched in Autumn 2022 by the Young Leaders Group. This group is made up of young leaders who are passionate about championing the views of fellow young leaders and helping to develop and improve the support structure for those starting out in leadership roles within the BB.

What will the Young Leaders Network do?

The Young Leaders Network has three main aims. These are:

To Inform & Support: Via methods such as social media, termly emails and our dedicated Young Leaders Facebook Group, the Network aims to keep young leaders informed of the opportunities and support available to them.

To Provide Opportunities: The Network will provide and promote opportunities for young leaders to build skills, gain experience and develop. These opportunities will be designed to help young leaders feel empowered and valued within the BB.

To Amplify the Voice of Young Leaders: Amplifying the voice of young leaders by raising their profile, their contributions and the difference they are making. This is also about empowering young leaders to become ambassadors for our work.

How can I get involved or support the Network?

Young leaders aged 18-26 will automatically receive the Network’s termly emails with details of upcoming opportunities that can be signed up to. We also encourage all young leaders to join our dedicated Facebook Group, to allow them to engage with the Network more and be the first to hear about new opportunities available.

The success of the Network will also rely on all leaders within the organisation. There are many ways for you to support the Network including:

Signposting your young leaders to the Network and encouraging them to get involved.

Providing young leaders in your area with real opportunities to lead and develop their skills and experiences in their local setting.

Battalions or Districts finding opportunities to bring their young leaders together to help build skills and provide opportunities.

Pray for the work of the Network and our young leaders.

Keep up to date with upcoming opportunities for the Young Leaders Network at: boys-brigade.org.uk/young-leaders-network

Young Leaders Weekend

In October young leaders from across the Brigade came together for our Young Leaders Weekend.

Over the course of the two days, leaders took part in a range of adventure activities, shared discussions around the ‘Gives & Gets of BB’ in workshops and had opportunities to discuss their experiences with each other.

The event will be returning again in Autumn 2023 and we look forward to welcoming more young leaders.

Following in the footsteps of her father (King George VI) and grandfather (King George V) the Queen took a keen interest in the social activities and service to the nation undertaken by members of the Brigade. The Queen will live long in the memories of many for her devoted service as our Patron.

Jonathan Eales, Chief Executive of The Boys’ Brigade, commented:

“We are all deeply saddened by the death of our Patron, Her Majesty The Queen. The thoughts and prayers of the entire BB family continue to be with His Majesty The King and the rest of the Royal Family.”

Princess Elizabeth, her father, and the Brigade

During the reign of King George VI, the young Princess Elizabeth accompanied her father at several prestigious events which demonstrated his genuine interest in the young people of the nation.

In 1937, Princess Elizabeth had one of her earliest interactions with members of The Boys’ Brigade when she joined the King for the Festival of Youth at Wembley Stadium, London.

The future Queen took a more active role when she met members of the Brigade in large numbers at a special event at Windsor Castle arranged to mark the Diamond Jubilee of the organisation in October 1943.

The Queen becomes our Patron

In 1952 it was announced that the new Queen had “graciously consented to become Patron of The Boys’ Brigade”. In doing so, Queen Elizabeth II became the fourth reigning monarch to become Patron, following King George VI, King Edward VIII, and her grandfather – King George V – who first became the Patron of The Boys’ Brigade as the Duke of York in 1897.

In becoming the Patron, Her Majesty also consented to the renaming of the highest award in the Brigade from the “King’s Badge” to the “Queen’s Badge”.

Throughout her reign, thousands of Seniors worked hard to earn this award, with a small handful having the privilege of being presented with it by the Queen in person.

There have been many special moments in the Brigade’s history but few were more impressive than when the Queen hosted visitors to the Brigade Council (AGM) meeting in Aberdeen to a reception at Balmoral Castle in 1958. The Queen received a contingent of 200 young people and 1,200 leaders as part of the celebrations for the organisation’s 75th anniversary.

As the Brigade marked important milestones during the 1960s and 1970s messages and support from Her Majesty continued.

The Queen visited Brigade House in 1973 as the Brigade celebrated its 90th anniversary. This marked the first time a reigning monarch had visited Brigade Headquarters. During the visit the Queen took time to meet and speak to young people and members of the staff, and made a great impression on those she spent time with.

The centenary of The Boys’ Brigade and beyond

In a year of centenary celebrations in 1983 the Queen undertook a Royal Review at Holyrood Park, with over 3,000 members present from all over the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. This was an historic occasion, long to be remembered by those privileged to be on parade.

The Queen arrived in a horse-drawn carriage and inspected the parade along a route some three quarters of a mile long. In her address the Queen spoke of being delighted to review the Brigade in its centenary year and gave words of congratulations for the achievements of generations of members.

“Your Founder builded better than he knew, for he started not only a great movement, but one from which our present wide-spread youth training was destined to spring.” - Her Majesty The Queen, from her address at the Royal Review in 1983

In the Spring of 1994 a planned farewell display for the outgoing Brigade President became a Royal Review. Under gloriously warm sunshine, and in the special setting of Windsor Castle, over 1,000 members combined to create another significant event in the history of the organisation,

made possible thanks to the dedication of our Patron. In her address the Queen referred to rapid social change, and how the Brigade had responded to this. The review was the sixth by a reigning monarch and would be the last by the Queen as Patron during her long and prosperous reign.

The Brigade continued to share a special relationship with the Queen into the new millennium. In 2002, when Her Majesty celebrated her Golden Jubilee, she met members of the Brigade on several occasions, and in 2006 she received a card from Brigade members at a meeting of youth organisations at Windsor Castle on 21st April during the celebrations for her 80th birthday.

During 2022, Companies across the country joined in celebrations for Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, thanking our Patron for a remarkable 70 years of service.

The legacy

of the Queen

The Queen will best be remembered by members of The Boys’ Brigade for her high-profile engagements, however the relationship Her Majesty had with the organisation did not stop there. She will be remembered as a Patron who cared about our work and the stories told to her by members, and as a supporter of our Object and values.

With thanks to The Boys’ Brigade Archive Trust for providing much of the information found in this obituary.

What makes a good BB Company?

That is what Northern Ireland District asked a few leaders before reviewing and relaunching its Company Health Check over the summer. The Health Check examines what makes a successful Company focused on advancing Christ’s kingdom. Designed on a simple traffic light grading system, it is a quick and easy tool to formulate a Company Development Plan. All Companies in Northern Ireland are encouraged to complete the Health Check with their Chaplain and Leadership Team during this session.

Sections include Church Life & Witness, Leaders, Children and Young People, Programme and Company Administration. Companies involved in the trial said they found it easy to use, encouraging and helpful to start conversations, and helped to recognise what is going well and should be maintained or developed as well as areas that need improvement.

The District Engagement Team is available to assist any Company with this and can meet with leaders face-to-face or virtually.

Lift your Anchor

With support from our Cashback for Communities project, 10 young people from 12th Inverness and 6th/8th Dundee set sail on the Alba Explorer, a 72’ sailing boat with the Ocean Youth Trust.

They sailed for five days, covering over 170 miles round the Isle of Mull and spending a night on Islay. As well as learning about sailing they also found out about all aspects of being on board a ship including helping with cooking and cleaning.

The young people received the Royal Yachting Association’s “Start Yachting” qualification and the Ocean Youth Trust’s own crew certification.

Neil Morrison, Captain of 12th Inverness said: “Without the Cashback for Communities funding, this simply would have been beyond our reach.”

Kilbryde Hike

The Kilbryde Hike is a competitive challenge hike for young people aged 11-18, with the next event taking place on 10th and 11th June 2023.

Travelling in teams of 3-5 over a course of around 18-25 miles over the two days, teams must be self-sufficient and navigate between checkpoints over open moorland, forest and countryside in timed sections. The hike is not easy, but with the right training, attitude and preparation, is within the reach of all young people. It can be used as a qualifying expedition for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Bronze Level (assessors will be available) or why not use the hike as a sponsored event to raise funds for your Company or a local charity?

There is also a Veterans category for anyone over 18 wanting to give it a go, or for younger ones new to hiking why not take part in the one-day Explorer category?

Church Unions

With over 90% of Companies in Scotland partnered with Church of Scotland congregations, current plans for re-organisation within the Church will have a significant impact on the BB in Scotland. The number of ministers will be significantly reduced and buildings will close in the years ahead.

‘Mission’ needs to be the basis for all the decisions being made and The Boys' Brigade has an opportunity to highlight our role as an outreach partner for congregations.

We are encouraging all Companies and Battalions in Scotland to find out more about what is happening locally and to at least begin talking between themselves and their Churches about how to adapt. There will be no ‘one size fits all’ model, but creative solutions can be developed. The Brigade will be writing to Churches to highlight the role the BB plays in mission and outreach into communities.

7th Dublin recently held their Company Enrolment, which was conducted by their Chaplain, Rev Norman McCausland, for the final time before moving to a new role in a different Diocese. This was followed by their Parents’ Evening and Prizegiving, where farewell presentations were made to Norman, his wife Tara – a leader in their Company – and their son Conor, who was a member of the Company age group.

The Parents’ Evening was full of activities and fun, as each of the age groups showed some of what they had been up to during a Covid-affected session. Members were presented with awards as well as a “well done” medal in recognition of their efforts. New cups were also presented in memory of the late Robert Warrington, founding Captain of 34th Dublin, for the best members of Anchors and Juniors.

During the summer the Company was able Get Adventurous using activities from the Programme Hub as well as making use of STEAM kits (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Maths) from the National Youth Council.

1st Cork

In a time of new beginnings for 1st Cork, the Company enjoyed eight weeks of fun in early summer in a temporary meeting space at Garryduff Sports Centre. Activities included games, crafts, dramatised Bible stories, novelty quizzes and songs.

A highlight was a Scavenger Hunt at Currabinny Woods, where children and young people were given a map to find various items and complete challenges. Back at base tea, coffee, juice, soup, chicken goujons and pizza was served, followed by prizes for all the participants.

Activities Committee Training Update

The Covid-19 pandemic has created serious challenges in organising Regional and District activities over the last couple of years. Therefore, the Activities Committee is devising some creative solutions to keep Companies in touch with each other.

In order to overcome the difficulties of geographic spread and distance between locations, the Activities Committee is creating monthly and occasional competitions which will soon be made available to all Companies in the Republic of Ireland. These will be designed so that Companies can participate from their own meeting space and send in results, photos and other information to RoI HQ, which can be shared on our Facebook page and hopefully create some healthy competition between Companies!

Alan Privett, our Training Director, and his team are starting call outs to help each Company with their specific needs.

We hope that this will help and encourage Companies with their restarting process, and also help those that have started on areas they are unsure of, for example programme planning and OBM. We are also planning to offer virtual Safeguarding training to leaders.

How The Boys’ Brigade is joining the fight against child exploitation

Child

exploitation can happen to any child, of any age, gender, race or social background. As well as the immediate dangers they face, survivors can experience trauma which can harm their mental health and emotional wellbeing long into adulthood. It is absolutely crucial that risks facing children are identified at the earliest possible opportunity so they can be offered the help they need. We welcome The Boys’ Brigade’s commitment to working with us in that important mission.

Children may be exploited sexually or to commit crime – sometimes at the same time. Exploitation takes place where an individual or group takes advantage of an imbalance of power to coerce, control, manipulate or deceive a child or young person under the age of 18. The victim may have been exploited even if the activity appears consensual. Child exploitation does not always involve physical contact; it also occurs through the use of technology, such as social media.

Exploiters groom young people, making them believe they are protected and cared for, perhaps buying them expensive gifts, before asking them to do tasks in return, using coercion and often terrifying threats where necessary to ensure their compliance. Often, we find young people do not realise they have been exploited, believing their exploiter to be their friend or that they are ‘helping out’ their exploiter. Others realise only once they feel trapped, afraid and facing threats of violence against

themselves or their loved ones. It is so important that we do more to prevent other children from falling victim to those who seek to exploit them.

The Children's Society

The Children’s Society’s Disrupting Exploitation Programme (DEx) works with young people and parents/carers who are victims of child criminal exploitation. Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, DEx has been working across Greater Manchester, Birmingham and London since 2018. We offer one-to-one support to children who are at risk of or experiencing exploitation.

Our project workers offer tailored support to each young person to identify risks they are experiencing and support them to manage these. They may also advocate for the child and provide advice to other agencies working with them. The programme also has workers who support parents/carers, and also carries out targeted group activities to support communities to understand more about protecting children and the risks of exploitation.

These risks can be perpetuated by policies, processes, attitudes and beliefs within services and organisations which come into contact with children, all of which can impact on young people’s lives and their ability to access support. We therefore work with agencies ranging from police and social care, to businesses and community groups.

GET INVOLVED 30 GAZETTE - SPRING 2023

Signs of child exploitation

Ask yourself, is a young person:

Travelling alone, particularly in school hours, late at night or frequently?

Looking lost or in unfamiliar surroundings?

Anxious, frightened, angry or displaying other behaviours that make you worried about them?

In possession of more than one phone?

Carrying lots of cash?

Potentially under the influence of drugs or alcohol?

Being instructed or controlled by another individual?

Accompanied by individuals who are older than them?

Seen begging in a public space?

The Children’s Society’s DEx team has partnered with The Boys’ Brigade as we believe that leaders across the organisation are in a strong position to disrupt exploitation wherever it occurs. Leaders across the country build solid relationships with the children and young people who attend their companies, getting to know them, their families, and circumstances well. This can extend to creating safe spaces for children and young people to tell leaders that something isn’t right or about abuse or exploitation they are suffering. In practice, this means that leaders are better able to spot the signs of exploitation than members of the public.

The first part of our partnership has been to work jointly to create a bespoke Activity Card that will be sent out for the Spring 2023 term and is aimed at the Company and Seniors age groups. The aim is that with more understanding, children may be able to better understand their circumstances and the choices they have before them, as well help them to raise the alarm if they are worried that they or one of their friends are being exploited. Often, it is our young people who are better placed to understand the lives of their friends, so they too can protect them by raising concerns with trusted adults. We also hope that this resource will equip the leaders delivering these activities too, so they are able to help keep the children and young people in their Company safe. The other part of our partnership with The Boys’ Brigade is the creation of training resources that can be delivered to leaders as part of the organisation’s regular Safeguarding training.

Webinar Opportunity

Join us for a webinar on Tuesday 17th January at 7pm to support you in using the programme resources. It will provide more context to the issue as well as tips for how to use them confidently and safely in your Company.

Find out more and register to attend at: boys-brigade.org.uk/events/ childrens-society-webinar

Finally, we would like to draw your attention to Look Closer, The Children’s Society’s ongoing campaign to raise public awareness about exploitation. It is everyone’s responsibility to protect children and exploitation occurs all around us in public spaces frequented by young people. Look Closer aims to help the public, businesses and other organisations spot the signs of child exploitation and report any concerns to the police – either on 101 or 999 in an emergency.
