STORYTELLING: IN SEARCH OF OUR ROOTS

Growing up in Louisiana, I am accustomed to storytelling as a method of passing down history across generations. This love of storytelling has stuck with me into my adult years and has fed my passion as a student and later, a teacher.

I was blessed to have the opportunity to teach at Cameroon University before my current position at Arizona State University. During my time in Yaounde, Cameroon, my research led me to

discover the historic of transatlantic slavery site at Bimbia, Cameroon.

Bimbia is a site of transatlantic slavery, but little has discussed in our classrooms and in our communities throughout Global Africa. It is not a history that we, nor our children, or parents know. This is not our fault.

Instead, this is part of the legacy of educational underdevelopment, as so many of us have been affected by the historic reality which enslaved,

forcibly transported, and disembarked men, women, and children from Africa into more than 30 countries outside of Cameroon, including the United States. Historic records tell us of the disembarkations of enslavement ship voyages from the Cameroon territory in Virginia, South Carolina, and New York, as well as Grenada, Jamaica, Barbados, St. Kitts, and so many other countries.

So much of our story as people of African descent

lies in the tragedy that took place at Bimbia, and some our elders hold keys to our stories. By going back to Bimbia today, many African Diasporans are finding hope and are reconnecting with communities on the continent of Africa. Some are actually finding family.

Blair Underwood, for instance, has found his family on his father’s side in Babungo, Cameroon.

In both scholarly and lay communities, we tend to know more about the historic sites of transatlantic slavery in countries like the Goree House of the Enslaved in Senegal; Cape Coast and Elmina “Castles” in Ghana; and most known in Louisiana, Angola, from where the first enslaved Africans, including Antoney, Isabella, and Angelo (Angela), were brought to English North America. Ironically, however, it is Cameroon to which more African Diasporans today link Chris Rock, Tasha Smith, Wanda Sykes, Quincy Jones, Erykah Badu, Oprah and others.

These people are tracing their roots using DNA technology in similar percentages to DNA links to better-known Nigeria, Guinea Bissau, and Sierra Leone. High DNA correlations of ethnic

links to Cameroon may support one of the latest United Nations Slave Routes Project statements about Bimbia. That is, in terms of its land space, the Bimbia historic site in Cameroon is the largest site of transatlantic slavery in Africa today.

As we prepare to mark the 400th year commemoration of the first disembarkation of enslaved Africans in English North American at Hampton, Virginia in 1619 and the 300th year of the city of New Orleans, we must also acknowledge how much of African Diasporan history of transatlantic slavery is still unknown four centuries later. As New Orleans, Louisiana was one of the largest ports of transatlantic slavery in the world, who knows what other reconnections

DOUGLAS REDD

Douglas Redd was born in New Orleans on December 15, 1947, and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He attended Dillard University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art. The strong presence of African and African American culture influenced his decision to stay in New Orleans after graduation.

This decision took him from a path that began with fine art to graphic and commercial art, and prepared him to offer a wider range of artistic talent to the community.

He was a self-proclaimed guardian of cultural symbols and a creator of new and different visual statements about historical and cultural African and African-American concepts and images. In 1993, he

established Redd House, Inc., and produced a wide range of creative, customized graphic art and design work.

Redd was accomplished in graphic arts, sculpture, wood cuts and jewelry making. He was strongly committed to community work that supported and promoted African and African American values, ethos, culture and symbols. As a result, he had an extensive history of making contributions to community-based cultural arts, and social and religious efforts in New Orleans. His work has been described as the pivotal graphic influence for much of the African, African American and Caribbean programs and events held in New Orleans.

Redd was a mentor and teacher to emerging artists, and a coach and counselor to community folk who were often inspired enough by his talent to continue to refine and improve their own lives. He was a quintessential "trash to treasure master" who helped to reclaim objects, symbols, and sometimes people, for more beautiful and valuable purposes.

His portfolio of commissioned work includes: 1977 to 2001: Design artist for the Congo Square area of the Jazz and Heritage Festival, designing the popular gates to Congo Square 1993: Redd and Carol Bebelle established Efforts of Grace, Inc.,

a non-profit support for their community cultural arts work 1993 to 1998: Designed/ created a series of five installations known as "EFFORTS OF GRACE." The titles were: Efforts of Grace, Savin’ Grace, Amazin’ Grace, Grace Under Fire & Throne of Grace. All of the works celebrate the indomitable spirit of African and African American people. The works were given a Cultural Olympiad Recognition Award and made part of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics 1995: Commissioned design of Essence Music Festival Logo 1995: Redd joined Bebelle as Associate Producer in mounting a dance/ theater adaptation of "The Origin of Life on Earth/An African Creation Myth."

1998: Redd, along with Bebelle, founded and established Ashé Cultural Arts Center on historic

Dryades Street—now Oretha Castle Haley Blvd.—in Central City, New Orleans, as a pivotal strategy for transforming the boulevard into a cultural tourism corridor.

Redd served as Associate and Artistic Director for the Center and the convener of the Center's Visual Artist Guild called "Visual Remedy."

February 2000: Commissioned for design/ creation of architectural installation for "The Ties That Bind—Making Family New Orleans Style," a photo-exhibit funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation March 2000: Commissioned design/ creation of architectural installation of "The Door of No Return" for St. Paul Community Baptist Church for Brooklyn's commemoration of the "MAAFA" From the 1970s to the

2000s, he gave image and perspective to every aspect of Africaneity you can imagine. From Kwanzaa to infant burial funds, from Middle Passage commemorations to school issues, Redd worked in and with the community to develop inspiring images for and about African and AfricanAmerican life. On the boulevard, Ashé Cultural Arts Center is contributing to the preservation and the re-development of the community and the legacy of culture, creativity and community in New Orleans.

On July 18, 2007, Redd joined the village of the ancestors. In his memory, the Ford Foundation has established the Douglas Redd Fellowship / Renewing Our Creative Resources to assure continuing leadership in the area of community cultural art. Redd is physically gone, but not forgotten. His spirit and his legacy live on. Ashé!

Living locally and making global connections, Ashé Cultural Arts Center has made impressive accomplishments along the way. Founded in 1998 by Carol Bebelle and Douglas Redd, Ashé

Cultural Arts Center is a precious treasure of New Orleans.

Twenty years has captured more than a few moments of note for Ashé. They include the annual Mafia

commemoration, which is a tribute to African ancestors and a rallying call for united efforts for an equitable future; Mayor Ray Nagin's first victory party, and the memorial services for our beloved co-founder Douglas Redd and our brother artistin-residence, Jeffrey Cook. In addition, Ashé co-produced the 2008 V to the Tenth gathering

with V-day, bringing over 40,000 people to New Orleans to reclaim the Super Dome and welcome home 1,200 displaced residents who were victims of the levee breaches following Katrina.

Ashé hosted the viewing of the inauguration of President Barack Obama’s Inauguration with over 200 neighbors.

Ashé also co-created and co-produced with V-day “Swimming Upstream” an original work that toured nationally and featured stories about women living through Katrina and its aftermath.

There have been iconic moments, but also the day-to-day richness of community programming, meetings, learning, supporting and gathering; master, emerging, and amateur artists, cultural rituals, art events, entertainment, learning opportunities, social, community and personal celebrations. So much life and living has happened in the home Ashé Cultural Arts Center has made for Culture.

Celebrating the kinship and family-making practices of New Orleans, Ashé created a touring exhibition called “The Ties that Bind/Making Family New Orleans Style.” The revival of the “Freedom Ride” which participants from the 1960s were unable to complete due to riots, ended at Ashé on its 50th anniversary. Other proud moments included the reunion of the Black

a political flavor of the month. Years of Systemic exclusion have to be met with years of purposeful, direct inclusionary efforts.

Efforts that will bring lasting economic change to several generations of minority businesses.

Our goal is to create an environment of GENERATIONAL WEALTH.

What Does Policy Change look like: In 2014 The Collaborative pushed the Mayor to properly staff the Office

of Supplier Diversity, which had one person, prior to their efforts.

In 2015 The Collaborative drafted the first revision of the Disadvantage Business Enterprise (DBE) Ordinance, which by all accounts have strengthen the ordinance’s with fines, penalties, and new policy requirements.

In 2015 The Collaborative initiated a citywide ballot initiative to make the (DBE) ordinance a permanent part of the city charter.

In 2016 The Collaborative support Councilman Broussett’s ordinance to make the (DBE) ordinance apply to ALL City boards and commissions.

In 2016 The Collaborative pushed the Mayor to conduct a long overdue Economic Disparity Study.
