The mission is simple – To make Sharm El Sheikh a better place in which to live, work and play. To do so, we must begin with ourselves and our community. Knowing that change will only come with awareness, we at “The Book” are committed to bring to you accurate information and have your voice heard at SEDO.
SEDO on the other hand will make your voice heard at the local government. Life is always better and brighter when we know we have choices and with those choices we are able to improve our own lives and the lives of those around us.
Bringing About a Sharm That Works for All In the aftermath of the 25th January 2011 – demonstrations, with the eventual overthrow of the former regime – in a most outstanding courageous manner which will go down in history and mimicked throughout the region. Sharm El Sheikh developed an ecology association called SEDO founded by the people of Sharm, a diverse multi-cultural people living in the heart of the Sinai. People, informed by wisdom and partnership who love Sharm, created the idea to change the past to one of sustainability, justice and peace. The mission of SEDO is to bring forth an environmentally – fulfilling and socially-just human presence to Sharm and the surrounding area. SEDO is under establishment as an NGO. Preliminary meetings took place by the founders and more people are beefing up the ranks.
After electing a board of directors four committees have been formed to carry out the objectives of SEDO. These are: 1. The Cleanliness Committee 2. The Desert Affairs Committee 3. The Sea Affairs Committee 4. The Awareness Committee In order to accomplish this mission, a set of tools and programs have been developed to catalyze transformation in individuals and communities across the area. Through dynamic group interactions, leading-edge information, participants of these meetings are inspired to reconnect with their deep concern for our world in Sharm. With Awareness we are now empowered to make a difference.

• How Did We Get Here?
• Where Do We Go from Here?
An examination of the state of environmental, social and personal well-being
Tracing the root causes that lead to our current imbalance
Discovering new ways of relating with each other and looking at the emerging Movement for Change
The SEDO meetings are held every Tuesday at 8pm in UMBI Sharks Bay.

Sea life from a
different perspective The Red Sea is listed as one of The Seven Underwater Wonders of the World – so it would be crazy to come all the way to Sharm el Sheikh and not see what all the fuss is about? Go on, give Scuba diving a go! But you may only be visiting Sharm for a week or so, you’re not sure that Scuba diving’s for you and signing up for a diving course seems a bit daunting. However, there is an excellent way to try out Scuba diving before committing to a course ...
Never too old ... From 8 to 80, scuba diving is for any age! All you need are basic swimming skills and to be, overall, physically fit. The Dive Centre will go through the basic necessary health requirements. There are tailor made courses for children as young as 8 years old, enabling them to experience breathing underwater for the very first time in the safety of a swimming pool (max. depth 2 metres), using dive equipment designed for little people. Go Nemo!
Diving equipment The Dive Centre will kit you out with all the equipment you need. Here’s what you will be wearing: l Mask (not goggles please!),
which needs to fit your face snugly, forming a seal around your eyes and nose.
l Fins (and not flippers!) again,
make sure they fit properly; too loose and they will fall off.
Introduction dives The majority of Dive Centres in Sharm offer introductory dives, ranging from a morning to a whole day on a boat, where a professional, certified Divemaster or Instructor takes you through some of the basic underwater skills and fully brief you – making sure you’re relaxed, comfortable and safe before taking you out into the crystal clear waters of the Red Sea. Despite going no deeper than 10 metres, you will experience the full magic of this wonderful aquatic world, as it’s within these first 10 metres that the light is at its best and the coral and fish at their most colourful.
The Instructor or Divemaster will handle everything during your introductory dive. (Remember to fin (kick) though! All you need to do is relax, breathe and take in the amazing Red Sea marine life.

Explore the
Nabq Protectorate Ever wondered how the coastline of South Sinai looked before it was struck by mass tourism? You can find out by travelling just 35km north of Sharm el Sheikh to the Nabq Protectorate (also called Nabq National Park), where you will discover the largest protected area on the Gulf of Aqaba.
Get amongst it! Once in the Nabq Protectorate (there’s a small entrance fee) you’ll find designated camping areas, hiking trails and a visitor centre. Go snorkeling over the rich, diverse coral reefs at Shoura al Manquata and Nakhlet el Tal; visibility can be poor, however, due to sediment from the mangroves. Just inland from the mangroves are the dunes of Wadi Kid, where the largest stands of Arak bushes in the Middle East can be found. Arak twigs were traditionally used by Bedouin to clean their teeth.
Established in 1992, the Nabq Protectorate covers 600km2 of mountains, desert and sea between the Straits of Tiran and Dahab, protecting a fascinating array of flora and fauna, including 134 species of plant, 6 of which are only found in Nabq.

Located on the shoreline at the mouth of Wadi Kid, the Nabq Protectorate has the World’s most northerly mangrove forest. The mangrove is a delicate ecosystem, providing an important habitat for birds and fish. The root system grows upwards around the trees, filtering most of the salt from the sea water; any remaining salt is exuded by the leaves and seen as salt crystals on the underside of each leaf.

Although we have numerous excellent Specialists in hospitals around Sharm, they are expert in treating only one specific area of the body; investigating and treating specific episodes of one illness or condition - which is fine if you know exactly what is wrong with you. However, let’s say you are suffering from a nagging back pain and blinding headaches or a number of symptoms relating to more than one part of your body … who can you go to for help with such a varied range of ailments? This is where the General Practitioner (GP) can help you and all the family.
The consultation At your first consultation, the GP will take your medical history, including current health problems, past medical and surgical history. Your GP will also take note of your family and work history, and overall lifestyle. Then he (or she) will conduct the appropriate medical examination, depending on your complaint and any ongoing medical conditions. Next the GP will explain and agree a plan of investigation and/or treatment and any follow-up arrangements, referring you on to a Specialist, where necessary. However, a good GP treats 90% of all cases without the need for a specialist referral, including paediatrics, gynaecology, psychiatry and general medicine.
The GP has a broad knowledge of a great number of specialities, providing continuity of care across all episodes of the same illness and across all illnesses. The GP takes a more holistic view of your state of health, taking into consideration emotional and psychological factors, as well as social conditions that may also be contributing to ill health. It’s a known fact that 40% of medical consultations have a psychological component. GPs are trained to recognise and deal with this important aspect of a consultation; as opposed to the Specialist, who is only trained to investigate and treat the physical aspect of a specific body system or condition.
