DfE News

The government has announced:

ECTE - Early Career

Entitlement

The government has committed to updating the Early Career Framework, maintaining its grounding in evidence.

From September 2025, building on the ECF, we are introducing the Early Career Teacher Entitlement (ECTE).

The Early Career Teacher Entitlement will revise and improve the delivery of what we formerly referred to as the ECF programme, maintaining the grounding in evidence, to ensure the highest standards of professional development for new teachers

T

SEND training materials

The biggest in-school factor that makes the impact to a child’s educational outcomes is high-quality teaching. This is particularly important for pupils with Special Educational Needs and disabilities (SEND).

We know from feedback that training is most powerful when it feels relevant to the ECT’s context, and that too often ECTs feel unprepared and unsupported to teach pupils with SEND.

We will partner with expert organisations to provide targeted support and further resources for ECTs in special schools.

This will ensure that the Early Career Teacher Entitlement will help to create a more supportive and effective environment for ECTs teaching pupils with SEND, ultimately leading to better outcomes for those pupils.

News

The government has announced:

Streamlined ECT Registration

We will reduce workload for schools by introducing a single system for schools to sign their ECTs up for training and statutory induction. Date to be confirmed in due course.

Streamlining the registration service will ensure that senior leaders can spend their time on supporting their ECTs and mentors, rather than administrative tasks.

A single system will create a more straightforward and simplified registration process.

Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill

As part of this Bill, subject to Parliament, from 1 September 2026: New teachers would need to hold or be working towards Qualified Teacher Status; or meet one of the exemptions to the requirement for QTS set out in regulations.

The measure would also extend the requirement of statutory induction to newly qualified teachers in academies.

The DfE will make guidance on the new QTS requirements available to schools in advance of this date to support and encourage them to start to consider how they will ensure that the teachers who they recruit have QTS or are working towards it.

There is more in depth information about this, alongside all the other measures in the Bill, at: Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill 2024: policy summary - GOV.UK.

Early Career Teacher Programme

Exciting changes to the ECT programme for September 2025.

All modules rewritten to be more challenging and progressive from ITT

Fortnightly instructional coaching in Year 1 as well, with the alternate week for pastoral only - obviously schools could carry on weekly

Much more spiralised curriculum which spans 'new content' across Year 2 as well.

More on SEN and Oracy threaded throughout the modules. Updated online Clinic sessions.

Conference 3 replaced with Adaption and SEND.

Mentor training is reduced to 1 year - existing full trained Mentors to be excused for now.

ITT Strategic Role

We need more ITT placements across East London!

DfE has given us a strategic role across East London to increase the amount of training placements.

For this we have:

Founded the East London ITT Engagement Forum which brings together all local teacher training providers to address the challenges and issues we all face.

Mapped the ITT landscape across East London to find the cold spots where there are not enough placements.

Next we will:

Engage with schools to provide more placements in primary and secondary shortage subjects across BD, Havering and Newham.

Please let us know if you have capacity to host more trainees with ANY provider and we will support you.

We are ‘A Brighter Start: East London’s Stronger Practice Hub’ led by Sheringham Nursery School and Children’s Centre. The hub is funded by the Department for Education. As an Early Years Stronger Practice Hub, we are here to provide advice, share good practice and offer evidence-based professional development for early years practitioners working with children from birth to 4 years old
