Literary & Cultural Walks Autumn 2014

The Bluecoat literary walks reveal the literary associations of Liverpool’s public places and secret spaces. They look at how home-grown writers have taken Liverpool’s distinctive voice to the world, and how eminent visiting authors such as Charles Dickens, Herman Melville and Daniel Defoe have all added to the city’s rich literary culture.

Sunday 28 September, 2pm War & Pace – explores stories of war from the Front and the Home Front, at sea and in the air, and how Liverpool writers have responded to wars and conflicts across the centuries. Led by Deborah Mulhearn.

A circular walk that starts and ends at the Bluecoat.

Sunday 12 October, 2pm Deep Seas & Dead Fathers – traces the development of Liverpool’s literary life from Georgian times, its libraries and newsrooms, and why the growing city produced so many writers. Led by Deborah Mulhearn.

Saturday 25 October, 11am Malcolm Lowry – this city centre walk visits resonant Liverpool haunts related to Wirral-born writer Malcolm Lowry, author of acclaimed modernist novel Under the Volcano. Led by Colin Dilnot.

The walk is part of the Lowry Lounge, the Bluecoat’s annual Lowry celebration, which includes a talk by Iain Sinclair (2pm), who follows Lowry’s footsteps in his recent book American Smoke, and the UK launch of Lowry’s ‘lost’ novel, In Ballast to the White Sea introduced by the book’s editor Patrick McCarthy (4pm).

The Bluecoat cultural walks re-trace the rich tapestry of Liverpool’s colourful history. They recall the town’s maritime and trading success and the pivotal role the port played as a ‘gateway’ for travellers.

They look at how the changing needs of society influenced housing, healthcare, education and cultural facilities. They also chart the popularity of shops due to increased wealth.

Sunday 5 October, 2pm Sunday 19 October, 2pm The Art of Shopping – looks at the history of our iconic department stores and their founders, how the culture of shopping has shaped our city, and the success of the Liverpool One complex. Led by Joan Crist.
