What’s in your bag?

Are you overpacking? Are you packing too little? One of many traveling essentials includes the tedious task of packing all that you need, and knowing when to draw the line when it comes to choosing shorts verses pants, or sandals verses boots.

At times like these, it’s important to start your packing journey with a traveler’s checklist. If time doesn’t permit you to make your own, variations are available online and allow you to keep track of what to and what not to bring with you. When it comes to a decision on packing all you own, know that packing light is the way to go so you can move quicker and have a free hand when you need it.

Where are you going?

Understanding where it is you’re traveling to is important when considering what you’re packing, and also adapting to the area. Are you going overseas? Are you taking a plane? A car?

Either way, the time in the car or plane can be used to read books, listen to music, or catch up on sleep. Make sure to pack items to keep you occupied and avoid utter boredom.

Check up on the weather forecast beforehand, so you know whether or not a jacket or sunscreen is needed. Understand that jetlag can affect your productivity in days to come, or transitioning weather conditions may throw off your itinerary unless you plan appropriately.

In addition to reading books or playing road games, music is a large part of the road trip experience. Good music changes the atmosphere of the car, and can fill the silence with excitement and rhythm. Engage the family, or whomever it is you’re traveling with, in sing-alongs or music-sharing sessions, because even drivers get bored of the silence. Spring break doesn’t always mean you have to go far in order to have fun. Sometimes the best trips take you closer to home than you’d expect. Wisconsin is full of great adventures just waiting around the corner, and all you need is a car to take you there.

UP NORTH

While the weather’s still in that inbetween zone, northern Wisconsin still holds beauty in its lakes, which make for great fishing and casual boat rides. Hanging out in a cabin with friends and family can be a lot of fun, especially with bored games and movies to keep you occupied come nightfall.

CHICAGO

Just south of the Wisconsin border is a city full of excitement. Chicago’s vast selection of daily activities will keep you occupied for the length of spring break, or just a simple day trip. Take a train, a bus, or a car for the short journey, and be sure to stop by and check out the famous Millennium Park for awesome photo opportunities!

THE DELLS

Among Wisconsin’s well known travel ops is the Wisconsin Dells. Just two hours west of Grafton, the Dells is a touristy city decorated with themed shops, amusement parks, and scenic tours. On the side of ziplining, boat tours, and touring canyons, visitors can stay at resorts such as the Wilderness, Mount Olympus, or the Kalahari.

Brady Zwick

Sophomore Brady Zwick enjoys playing football, basketball, and tennis in his free time. One of his favorite things to do is go to the movies, he appreciates every type of movie except romantic comedies.

Besides playing sports and relaxing by himself at the theater, he spends time with his 13 year old brother and two step siblings.

If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would it be and why?

Brady: “I’d probably want to switch lives with Jay Z because he gets a lot of money, so you’d be able to do whatever you want.”

Mr. Kalina: “Mark Cuban. He is the coolest guy on Shark Tank, my favorite TV show.”

What is on your bucket list?

Brady: “Some of the things on my bucket list are pretty generic, but I’d like to skydive because its an adrenaline rush and I’ve always thought it’d be fun.”

Mr. Kalina: “To travel to every MLB baseball park with my family. So far we are at #7.”

Mr. Mike Kalina

Gym teacher Mr. Mike Kalina enjoys cooking and is an avid outdoorsman. He comes from a family of teachers and has 4 energetic kids that keep him and his wife of almost 17 years, busy.

Boating on Pike Lake and downhill skiing is what the Kalinas like to do in their free time.

Who is your celeb crush?

Brady: “My celebrity crush is Beyonce I guess.”

Mr. Kalina: “Bo Ryan. I had the opportunity to interview him as a high school student and attended many of his Platteville basketball camps as a high school player.”

If you could be an animal, what would you be and why?

Brady: “I’d be a penguin because they can slide on their belly all the time for easy transportation.”

Mr. Kalina: “A giraffe. I am tried of always being short!”
