“The Gold Coast is a vibrant and thriving entertainment city.” “The Gold Coast has an established yet growing local music scene, which the Council is pleased to support.” “As Mayor, I want to see the music sector and creative industries grow as part of a broader push to establish a true cultural identity for our city. With a unique cultural identity we can connect our community, while also showcasing the city’s individuality to the visitors who come to the Gold Coast. I am pleased to say that the City of Gold Coast has entered an exciting time where we have the opportunity to further establish our own cultural identity. I believe it is important that we are known as a vibrant, liveable city that embraces and reinforces its self identity. While the new Council is already seeking to deliver a world-class, quintessentially-Gold Coast Cultural Precinct in the heart of the city, I also want the arts to thrive across the Gold Coast. Mayor Tom Tate

The Bizz GC is an avid supporter of local music, artists and entertainment. With so much red-tape restricting our live music and entertainment enjoyment, we asked Mayor Tom Tate for his views and visions on the Gold Coast returning to its former glory of Australia’s favourite holiday playground, and where he stood with supporting the local arts. We are happy to publish the following statement from our Mayor written to The Bizz Gold Coast for our readers and community as a whole.

The Gold Coast has an established yet growing local music scene, which the Council is pleased to support. For example, Council supports live music and the local scene by providing professional gig and development opportunities, as well as recreational youth music programming. These opportunities have been provided in a number of ways, including: the Gold Coast Suns Fifth Quarter Entertainment; Surfers Paradise Festival; HUSH (Acoustic singer songwriters in Library); and partnering with Q Music (Queensland’s peak contemporary music body) to deliver industry relevant workshops, panels and networking opportunities. By providing these gig and other support opportunities, hundreds of bands have benefitted such as Fairchild, Bobby Alu, The Lamplights, Double Lined Minority, Laneway and the Vernons. Council also works closely with the music sector and creative industries to look at issues around zoning and licensing. We are listening to the industry and some of the feedback received as part of the City of Gold Coast's Draft Culture Strategy 2013-2023, has been a strong desire to cut red tape. There is no doubt we are an events and festival city, with Council supporting major events like the Big Day Out, Bleach* Festival, Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival, Cooly Rocks On, Broadbeach Country Music Festival, Swell Sculpture Festival and Armor All Gold Coast 600. The local entertainment industry certainly has a friend in Council. As we continue to develop the City’s Draft Culture Strategy 2013-2023, there will be a real focus on supporting events that are ‘distinctly Gold Coast’ and reflect our outdoor and relaxed lifestyle, such as Opera on the Beach. Our close proximity to Brisbane can be a challenge for Gold Coast arts and culture, however our point of difference is our great outdoor events, beautiful beaches and enviable climate. By focusing on these points of differences we can complement rather than compete with Brisbane. My vision for the city is simple - that we are a place where culture is everyday. This means that there will continue to be countless opportunities for Gold Coasters and visitors to experience great music, arts and culture.” If you wish to provide me with your feedback, please email me at mayoralfeedback@goldcoast.qld.gov.au. Opera in the Park ‘An Evening on Broadway’ On Saturday 5th October at 6:00pm, Broadbeach Alliance will be presenting this wonderful cultural event for everyone at Kurrawa Park, and it’s free! Bring a blanket or a seat to sit back and enjoy incredible world-class entertainment under the stars. Performing just for you, see the amazing talents of Donald Cant and Danielle Everett. Donald Cant is best known as one of Australia’s ‘Phantoms’ in Phantom of the Opera, and has sung before the Queen, while Danielle Everett is best known for performing the lead role of Christine in the Australasian tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera. The evening will also include a host of performers in the very special, ‘Evening on Broadway’. Bring a picnic or take advantage of any number of the great restaurants and takeaways throughout the Broadbeach area, and remember this is an alcohol-free event. Of course, Broadbeach has an endless number of venues to enjoy a beverage after you’ve been wowed by ‘An Evening on Broadway’.

Cast: Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg, Bill Paxton Genre: Action/Crime/Drama/Thriller Dir: Baltasar Kormákur Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg lead an all-star cast in 2 Guns, an explosive action film that tracks two operatives from competing bureaus who are forced on the run together. But there is a big problem with their unique alliance: Neither knows that the other is an undercover federal agent. For the past 12 months, DEA agent Bobby Trench (Washington) and U.S. naval intelligence officer Marcus Stigman (Wahlberg) have been reluctantly attached at the hip. Working undercover as members of a narcotics syndicate, each man distrusts his partner as much as the criminals they have both been tasked to take down. When their attempt to infiltrate a Mexican drug cartel and recover millions goes haywire, Trench and Stigman are suddenly disavowed by their superiors. Now that everyone wants them in jail or in the ground, the only person they can count on is the other. Unfortunately for their pursuers, when good guys spend years pretending to be bad, they pick up a few tricks along the way.

Mike Goldman We love that so many national celebrities and identities choose to call Gold Coast home, and that we have the opportunity to speak with them and share with you a little about their success and normal life. Mike Goldman gave up some of his time to speak with us, in between Big Brother commitments, commercial voice-overs, emceeing and working on his film, Shooting Goldman. Mike has been part of the Australian media landscape for close to 20 years in TV, radio and film, and a fact that we were unaware of is he also comes from some serious media pedigree. He is the son of TV and radio legend Grant Goldman, who hosted the first colour television show in Australia – COUNTDOWN! We instantly recognise Mike Goldman as an integral part of Big Brother, hosting Showdown, Live Evictions and narrating, so naturally we asked him about this experience first. “I love Big Brother!” he says happily. Aware that reality television can be manipulated and edited we asked for some inside gossip on how contrived the series actually is, and received an answer that made perfect sense, “Every year there are different people and you can’t tell these people what to say” he explains, “We don’t have a producer than can tell them what to do, we can only make them perform tasks and compete in Wednesday Showdown games, and that’s as contrived as it can get.” On editing he says, “Our producers pride themselves on not putting anything out of context. People forget that it is complete isolation and the housemates are cut off from the outside world, and their emotions go crazy. They fall in love easier, fall in hate easier – none of it can be contrived, it’s physically impossible.” He genuinely tells us, “I’m really proud of our show; of housemates that have come such a long way with their careers and how it’s entertained Australians for so long. It’s an awesome show.” As well as all his other business activities, Mike tells us how BB has opened a lot of doors for him. He’s working with former housemate, Wes Denning on a couple of shows in the US, who has put together The Stafford Brothers Show which is on in 13 countries around the world and just been picked up by MTV. We’d like to proudly point out The Stafford Brothers are also locals! Mike will also be working on a show with Ryan Seacrest in LA, “He’s killing it!” exclaims Mike. Mike Goldman and Ryan Seacrest sound like a fantastic collaboration and we’ll keep well on top of this duo and their offerings to entertainment.

Page 8

www.thebizzgc.com.au

BB and Hollywood aren’t enough for our Mike Goldman, who is also the voice of 30+ animal characters for the ABC3 animated TV series WAC (World Animal Championships) which launched last month, and is already working on finishing the next series. WAC is aired on Sundays at 11am. From television series to making movies, Mike’s film “Shooting Goldman” will be released at film festivals in America, and he explains it as a, “Hoax documentary, about following a guy who is on a quest to be an actor and then he finds out his family and friends are in on the whole

thing, and it all goes a bit crazy” he laughs. We asked why the film would be released in America and not here in Australia, “It’s no secret that Reality TV has killed off a lot of drama productions and I’m a Reality TV host, so any critic in Oz with out-of-work buddies will be very quick to diss. and I understand that.” Mike is very keen to pursue his career in the movies, and considering his extensive experience and handsome looks, we expect to see him on the big screen in the not too distant future.

“we were the first support act for Bad Religion at Festival Hall!”

Mike Goldman - Rockstar

On a more personal level we were pleased to hear Mike say, “I’m all about getting out and enjoying live entertainment.” He’s an avid supporter of the music industry and in fact played in a 4-piece band in the late 90’s and early naughties called Polish. “It was the best fun I’ve ever had” he says, “I was writing my own songs, playing in a band, on stage – we played with Regurgitator, Angels, Hudu Gurus,” excitedly adding “we were the first support act for Bad Religion at Festival Hall! Our drummer showed up late because he was so nervous he had a bong before he came to the show and FELL ASLEEP! The stage manager told us we only had 25 minutes rather than the 35 minutes we were originally supposed to do, but it was the biggest gig – unbelievable!” They were definitely a rock band, and by the

Mike Goldman - Miss/Mr USA? sounds of it, an early Steel Panther kind of band, with song titles including ‘You can’t have it, it’s not insured’ and ‘Aliens cut off my cock’. You can’t buy or download any of the material, but we have a song that Mike recorded with his best friend, Ben Clayton (producer at NOVA Brisbane) called Pillow Wall. The band name is Angry Dragons, and we have the song up on our home page for all of you to have a listen to and enjoy! We think we may have set off the musician in him again with him saying, “I’ll get up and play a few songs at the Big Brother wrap party!”

Gold Coast’s Most Eligible Bachelor? Living in a Broadbeach high-rise which he bought off the plan, Mike explains “I was really really clever; I bought at the peak of the boom, off the plan and had the best view ever! Then the market collapsed, but not before another building went up to BLOCK my best view ever.” He laughed, “Sea for Ever – LIES! The sea is there for ever but there’s no view of it! You can still see a bit of it though, and it does have a good gym!” On his favourite things about the Gold Coast he says, “I love all the

restaurants at the back of Marina Mirage and in a Burleigh back street there’s a vegetarian restaurant I go to a lot. Moo Moo’s is the best restaurant on the coast though.” “I’m always up for a drink at Q1 which is an awesome building, and try to get out and see local bands as often as I can” Dracula’s is obviously a favourite pasttime as he tells us he’s been then 10 times with plans of going back. Loving the zest and enthusiasm for work and living that just oozes from Mike

Goldman, we asked of his ‘relationship status’, “I’m not married or a family man” he says “what do you say when trying to work things out with your ex?” he laughed. Easy answer – Gold Coast’s most eligible bachelor! The Bizz GC wishes Mike Goldman every success with his future endeavours and we hope he doesn’t forget about us while building his name in Hollywood!

The Jam

By Rob O’ Sullivan

Hi, and welcome to The Jam! Since the last issue I was fortunate enough to be introduced to the music of a young band (thanks to Natasha) that hail from New Zealand but now call the Gold Coast home. These Four Walls is the group I am referring to. From humble beginnings in the land of the long white cloud the band has settled for now, on the sunny GC. They recorded their latest album, “Living to Write the End“, here which was the number one selling album at JB Hi-Fi stores on the week of its release. The record also reached number 14 on the New Zealand album charts with its lead single “Passenger“, receiving high rotation both in New Zealand and Australia. Along with this, their debut record “Down Falls an Empire” reached number 22 on the NZ album charts. The singles from that record did very well for the band, with “Sweet December” and “Lay it Out“, spending 37 weeks in the charts between them. This kind of chart success doesn’t just happen, and the band has played some high profile gigs in support of their albums. They were the main support act for Nickelback at Vector Arena in December 2012, and have also supported Australia’s own Karnivool and The Butterfly effect on their New Zealand tours. These Four Walls were also one out of four NZ acts to play at The Big Sound Summit in Brisbane. I caught up with the lads at one of their rehearsals to see what they were all about.

Brad Vickers | Steve Gibb | Chris Treeby | Gray Vickers The Jam: What lead the band to decide on the move from Auckland to the sunny Gold coast? Gray: We got to the point where we were playing the same gigs with the same bands and we weren’t growing as a unit, and as we had spent two months on the gold Coast recording “Living to Write the End” we decided it would be a great place to launch ourselves in Australia. Brad: We have two cities at our doorstep with Brisbane being an hour away and it’s cheap for us to get back to New Zealand plus, the weather is a bonus. Gray: Also, when we were recording here, we met so many different bands and it was a whole different scene for us and we thought we could learn so much and get to play with different acts and build a fan base here in Australia.

Gray and Steve

The Jam: I was reading about your chart success in New Zealand, The band must have a good fan base back home? Gray: We do, we are heading back in October to play some dates because we never got to play any farewell shows. In saying that, we did play a few support tours, but none as a headlining act. We’re doing Auckland and Christchurch and a few other places. There are enough people into the band to justify it and like Brad said, it’s reasonable for us to fly there. The Jam: I also read that you guys supported Nickelback, which must have been a cool experience? Gray: We have actually played with them a couple of times. Steve: That was an eye opener for us. We have always been a pub band. It was amazing taking what we had always done and putting it out there on such a huge level and seeing how our music translated to arena sized venues. It was so good for us in many ways. Brad: Our fan base quadrupled after that show.

Page 24

www.thebizzgc.com.au

These Four Walls

s The Jam: There is a video from “Living to Write the End” for the song “Passenger”, was that shot in Australia? Brad: We actually shot our bit in New Zealand and sent our director to the U.S. to shoot the desert scene. He was so set on shooting an American muscle car in an American desert and it didn’t cost that much more than shooting it in new Zealand, and it looks a lot cooler (laughs) The Jam: Do you have plans to record new material in the near future? Brad: We’re planning to film and record a few of our existing songs live in the studio over the next month. We’ll be trying to capture the energy of our live show, but with a bit of studio polish.

Steve and Brad I would like to thank Steve, Gray, Chris and Brad from These Four Walls for giving some time to the Jam, and if you like your high energy rock with catchy melodies be sure to check out the boys online and keep an eye out for upcoming shows. You won’t be disappointed. www.thesefourwallsband.com

The Jam: What would be stand out tracks on your latest album and why? Brad: Our current favourite track to play live is Rain. That song has a massive amount of groove and always gets a great reaction from the audience. Also track 3, The True Sound of Running, because it’s so different to anything we’ve done before. The Jam: What are your thoughts on the Gold Coast original scene and where do you think it could be improved? Brad: There is a ton of talent in the Gold Coast rock scene. We’ve been lucky enough to play with some great bands so far, including Electric Horse, Velvet Ballroom and Mallory Vanetti – and there are some cool bands we haven’t played with yet, such as Guards of May, Dollarosa and Mass Sky Raid to name just a few. Gagging the Letterbox You know what I’m talking about! You come home to find your letterbox stuffed so full that you’re actually playing a game of tug-of-war with the leaflet advertising just to get your mail! When you finally pry it all out, there’s bits of paper strewn all over the place and a massive tear in the most important letter that ‘was’ actually posted. As many do, I like direct mail to find out what specials are on in my area, but there is a BIG problem with the distribution of it. As Christmas fast approaches, the gagging of our letterboxes is going to become more extreme, rendering it almost impossible for the ‘Postie’ to deliver our mail, and leaving terrible mess across our front yards and streets. I understand for distributor’s it saves time and money by delivering them all on the same day, and would hope those savings are passed on to the advertisers, BUT the number of advertisers losing a large potential audience, due to the tug-of-war causing their material to be ripped and immediately thrown away is vast. And the frustration caused to us, the mail recipients, is huge, also causing the material to be immediately tossed on the bin from sheer annoyance. The whole thing is made even worse when it rains and the half that is poking out is saturated and WE have to clean up the soggy mess! More and more people are putting the NO JUNK MAIL stickers on their poor abused letter-boxes and rightfully so. There is a solution to this – don’t deliver them all at the same time. Sure it’s going to cost more for the advertiser, but if it works for them the cost is worth it and the extra cost will also be beneficial in that more people will actually see the material. Littering carries a fine and I wonder why council Parking Officers wouldn’t be taking photos of the eyesore mess of our streets caused by the avalanches of direct mail and fining the distribution companies – there’s a great revenue raiser suggestion! How to use a Round-a-bout!? The common “round-a-bout” seems to be a road obstacle that very few can master, and considering we live in a city that has new ones popping up at almost every suburban intersection, this is an alarming problem that needs to be addressed. Unfortunately, whether people have been driving for five minutes or five decades, the puzzle we call a round-about is one that is apparently unsolvable. For the purpose of this article, I’m going to use the Gooding Drive and Robina Parkway monster round-a-bout as a prime example. If you use this fixture there is no doubt you are already well aware of the dangers of having to battle through it, and experience a blood pressure rise every time you near the approach. Sure, it’s big and cars are moving faster around it, but they still have breaks people! If you see a gap, TAKE IT! One of the reasons this r-a-b gets so congested is because people seem to have this ridiculous need to wait until there is a gap that a five-carriage train could get through before making a move. Now I’m not

encouraging reckless driving, but I am encouraging ‘assertive’ driving here. Having to queue for 15 minutes just to get through is wrong.com! Once moving through this obstacle, please remember the rules are pretty much identical to an intersection with lights, which most people follow with ease. If you are turning left – BE IN THE LEFT LANE! If you are turning right then for the love of a cold drink on a hot summer day, BE IN THE RIGHT LANE! And, above all, use another rule that drivers find extremely difficult to grasp – USE YOUR INDICATORS! Now, if you find yourself in the right lane and you miss your exit, under no circumstance, decide to cut across. This is a round-a-bout, and it will only take a matter of seconds to keep going around it, giving you enough time to INDICATE to drivers what you need to do. It’s common sense really. In fact, the entire practice of using a round-a-bout is common sense, so try using it and see how easy it can actually be. Drive safely everyone!

We’re talking Soundwave 2014! Soundwave tickets are on sale now at www.soundwavefestival.com or at www.oztix.com.au. From the UK to LA, this issue we speak with Asking Alexandria and Terror about their new albums and Soundwave’14.

Asking Alexandria – Ben Bruce

With their new album “From Death to Destiny” debuting at #5 on the Billboard Top 200, UK hard rock band Asking Alexandria are set to rock Soundwave 2014, and have guaranteed us side-shows! We spoke with band song-writer and lead guitarist, Ben Bruce about Soundwave 2014, touring and the new album. Having played Soundwave in 2011, Asking Alexandria is familiar with Australian crowds and Ben says “Honestly, we’ve always had a good time in Australia and it is one of our favourite places in the world to play.” Festival goers can expect some great rock including their more popular songs as well as tracks off the new album, and an anything-goes attitude. The only issue for those who are already fans is, “fitting three albums into the allocated time-slot of a festival performance.” “And we need an extra five minutes for drinking time” Ben adds “hate it when bands go on stage and are boring. Who the f… needs water? Drink a f…ing beer, get some bits out on stage!” he joked. Fortunately the side shows will give fans and punters the opportunity to see a full show and allow the band that extra five minutes needed for that beer ;-) Ben tells us “We’ll definitely be doing a few side shows; it’s all up in the air right now but we’re hoping to headline some or want to try and get in on the Avenged Sevenfold ones.” We asked Ben to explain the controversial reputation of the band and he joked, “People don’t know how to have a good time anymore!” “Look, it maaay have had something to do with a show we played in Seattle and we were far far too drunk; Danny in particular, passed out on stage, recouped, vomited on stage and then passed out again. I think that gave us a negative rep

for a while.” One of the tracks on the new album is dedicated to that night and includes actual audio from that show where the crowd are yelling out and calling him “a drunk piece of shit!” Ben says, “The song goes out to all of them pretty much saying, f@%# you we are who we are and do what we do.” Okay, so that could appear somewhat controversial… “From Death to Destiny” was just over two years in the making and we asked Ben to give his description summary of the album, “Close your eyes” he says “and think back to the greatest orgasm you’ve ever had, and times that by 20. And that’s a fact!” (Editor: think I better listen to this album) Touring is what Asking Alexandria do, and they are currently travelling across America with Korn, following it up with a headline tour, and then a UK tour with Bullet for my Valentine before coming to Oz for Soundwave 2014. We asked Ben who was their favourite act on the Soundwave 2014 line-up and he told us “Avenged Sevenfold! They’re good friends of ours and we haven’t been able to see them play live, so really looking forward to catching them.” On the best thing about playing Soundwave 2014, “The crowds are bigger, so we’re able to play in front of new people and win fans over, and getting to meet up with old friends and make new ones.” Asking Alexandria emerged from Rockstar Mayhem Festival as one of the fest’s most talked about artists, and will no doubt have the same impact at Soundwave 2014. Message to the Brissy Soundwave 2014 audience, “We honestly can’t wait to get back. Thank you for being so patient and we’ll see you soon!” www.askingalexandriaofficial.com

TERROR - Martin Stewart

LA Hardcore/Punk outfit, TERROR will be playing Soundwave’14 and we got to speak with band guitarist, Martin Stewart about the festival we’ve all been waiting for and their new album, “Live by the Code”. With 10 years of relentless touring and five albums under their belt, Martin tells us “TERROR has been a machine from day one!” All members of the band came from existing working careers in the music industry and all came with contacts of one form or another. “Everyone already knew a lot of other people around the world, and we hit the road as soon as our demo came out, and honestly, it hasn’t stopped” says Martin, adding “We get out there, make music, play shows and do it as hard as we can!” In typical rock and roll style he talks about starting out, “We’ve been putting in the work since we were teenagers - for ever. We were booking shows, supporting bands, letting other bands sleep on our floor when they were on tour” he laughs. “We’re a bunch of dudes who have a love for hard-core music and punk music!” “Live by the Code” is TERROR’s most loved release, and already their most well received. “We didn’t just write songs, go to the studio and record, and hand it to the label (coz that happens a lot nowadays)” states Martin, “Everything on this album was so calculated and done from the heart.” In a world that primarily downloads music these days, TERROR encourages you buy the hard copy CD. “Get more out of the record than an aggressive

tune to jump around to” says Martin, “The sleeve is put together like a small magazine where each of us designed each page. It’s a little explanation as to what the whole record means to us. There’s no set of rules or commandments, it’s our version and idea of the way things are” he explains. “It really does mean a lot of us, to share with people who understand where we’re coming from.” On Soundwave’14, Martin tells us the whole band is excited for the festival, “I’m 32 and it makes me feel like I’m a kid. It’s something I brag about to my friends when we get to do Soundwave” he laughs, “It makes me so happy.” We didn’t even have to ask who his favourite artist performing at SW was as he spilled, “Alice in Chains has been my favourite band since as long as I can remember. Getting to see them live and share a show with them – blows my mind!” When asked about the shorter set times as opposed to a headlining gig he continues laughing and says, “Luckily our songs are pretty short to start with!” “Seriously though, it’s not an easy thing. We want to play new songs and we’re gonna play new songs. We’ll all sit down together and come up with a set list that will suit everyone.” And in regard to side-shows he says, “We’re almost positive they’re going to happen, with so many days off between. Apart from the side-shows you’ll find us at the beaches!” Find info, merch and music at www.terrorlahc.com.
