Big Picture Outdoor Community Photo Image Exhibition and Big Family Funanza On Saturday 31st May the Big Picture Outdoor Community Photo Image Exhibition kicks off with a Big Family Funanza! The day will introduce a week-long photographic exhibition like you have never seen at the Country Paradise Parklands in Nerang. This will be the largest outdoor photographic exhibition of its kind in Australia featuring 25 2m x 3m photographs placed outdoors and on buildings all around the 33 acre Parkland over a 1km walking track, taking the photograph out of the gallery and putting it in nature. Councillor Tracey Gilmore of Division 5 is delighted to be able to provide the funding for this exceptional community event and says, “This is the most unique photographic exhibition the Gold Coast has seen, and best of all it is all done by local talent. Every picture is about the community for the community”. Cr Gilmore spoke proudly of how Sarah-Jayne Gibson and Mark Williamson of Shed 11 were successful in winning a regional development grant to support them in putting this exhibition together for the Gold Coast. Shed 11 have their studio at Country Paradise Parklands and provide support to local schools and community groups with their photographic artwork. The 2m x 3m images on display will all be photographs of various community groups in action – doing what they do, including the Nerang Riverkeepers Group, Healing Hooves and Schools among many more. Each image shares a unique view point, offering a glimpse into their world seen from their own eyes, and

is captured by the community organisations, youth groups and schools themselves. They are pictures of the people, by the people, for the people. The week-long exhibition will kick off with the Big Family Funanza which will host the Lion’s biggest BBQ, local musicians, dancers (including Aboriginal dancers), family games, jumping castle, motorised cars, giant slide, Dad’s activities, food, coffee, Devonshire Teas and market stalls. The Bizz GC believes this is an

Artist’s Impression event and exhibition that our entire community should get along to see, and to celebrate our local talent and community groups. The Big Family Funanza is a FREE event, as is the Big Picture week-long outdoor photo image exhibition, so put on some walking shoes and enjoy the beautiful Country Paradise Parklands as well as some incredible local art in a setting like no other. When: Saturday 31st May Time: 10:00am to 4:00pm Where: Country Paradise Parklands, 231 NerangBeaudesert Rd, Nerang Cost: FREE

Whole Snapper a Winner at the Croatian Club My mother recently invited me to join her for “Fish Night” at the Croatian Club, and being a lover of whole snapper (and my mother) I accepted her invitation, and was blown away. I’ll get to the massive size of the snapper and the way it beautifully came off the bone in a minute, and start with a brief rundown of the club itself.

Located on Nerang-Broadbeach Rd between Carrara Stadium and the train station, the club building overlooks a perfectly manicured, professional soccer field which on the night I was there, was lit up with youth teams playing a game that was almost worthy of Premier League. In saying that, the Croatian Club have a team playing in the main event at the Gold Coast Premiership League which will be held on the grounds on 9 May – Good Luck! The club-house itself features a fully licenced bar, a commercial kitchen and prep-rooms, a full stage and plenty of room for seating, dancing and for the kids to run amok. It can be hired for any event and has everything you need for any event as well as plenty of parking. The Croatian Club is open to the public and as General Manager, Adrian Puljich says, “Everyone is welcome!” Back to the reason for this article; if you love eating fresh whole snapper, then we have found the dining experience for you at the Croatian Club. Now, there’s nothing ‘fancy’ about this dining experience, but it is comfortable, warm, friendly and you simply can’t beat $25 for a HUGE whole snapper with salad, vegetables, chips and fresh bread. You’ll be rolling not strolling out of the club when you leave! The fish is barbequed on a patio just off the kitchen to perfection by Mario and Ivan and garnished with the freshest, best garlic, parsley and butter (my mouth is watering just thinking about it), while the ladies are in prep rooms and the kitchen making salads, Chevap (traditional mince sausage that is a favourite of every Croat and a must to try), vegetables and other menu items. When I say the fish is barbequed to perfection, I mean it. The skin is crispy and the flesh just eases off the bone, is moist, tender and full of flavour. Everything that comes with it is yum, but frankly, the fish is the star of the dish and I now have date-night every second Friday night with my mum just to have another serving! In the dining area, be prepared for the evening to get louder, as the Croatian regulars get more and more into their conversations. Don’t be alarmed, they’re not fighting! They’re wogs! hahaha and there’s something heart-warming about the Page 8

www.thebizzgc.com.au

whole environment. While the adults are conversing and laughing (loudly), the kids are running around from outside where they can watch the soccer game, to the stage area (separated from dining area) where they are playing – I don’t know - whatever it is kids play. Not being a parent myself, I usually steer clear of ‘family-friendly’ venues, but this is different. It’s like the kids look after themselves and let the adults enjoy their evening without having to be yelled at every 10 minutes. In saying that, there are always a couple of parents watching them. The ambience is like 100+ people in one room who are all family but aren’t. Everyone’s happy to have a chat, or to leave you alone to enjoy your meal, and seriously, everyone is smiling. The tables aren’t candle-lit and you don’t have a waiter approaching your table constantly to see if you’re okay or would like anything. If you want something, you go and get it! And don’t worry if you spill your red wine on the white table-cloth – it’s a good sign that you are enjoying your meal and your experience. “Fish Night” is on every second Friday and we’ve listed the dates for the next couple of months for your convenience. No booking is required, just show up like you’re visiting a friend, go to the bar area to the left of the actual bar where Adrian will most probably be waiting for you, order your meal and pick a table to sit down at. No fuss, but great food, great company and family friendly. Remember, “Everyone is Welcome!” Uslast – Enjoy! Friday Fish Nights: 9 May, 23 May, 6 June, 20 June, 4 July, 18 July, and every fortnight there-after. www.gccroatianclub.com.au

June. GCIT Chief Executive Officer, Aaron Devine, said Timothy has just completed his Certificate III in Commercial Cookery and is expected to finish his apprenticeship in the coming months. “I congratulate Timothy on winning the 2014 Gold Coast Young Chef Awards where he showcased his outstanding culinary skills. This is a major accomplishment considering he was competing against already qualified chefs.” GCIT is the premier training organisation for apprentice chefs in South East Queensland. Mr Devine said that the Gold Coast is home to some of Australia’s best restaurants, therefore it is imperative that GCIT continue to keep pace with the ever-changing industry needs and requirements to ensure people have an excellent dining experience. Timothy’s winning three course menu consisted of Pan seared flounder with grilled chorizo, ginger dressing over fennel & apple salad; Confit rabbit terrine wrapped in pancetta, artichoke celeriac puree, caramel turnip & quail egg; and Poached rhubarb brulee, strawberry and rhubarb compote, roast white chocolate.

ead Letter Circus is unlike any rock band to emerge in years. Watching someone on their first listen to alternative breakthroughs Dead Letter Circus searching to come up with a neat description is fascinating viewing… “It’s kind of like… no wait, it’s more of a… Wow, I have no idea what it is, but it’s different…” Part of the beauty of the soaring, sing-a-long choruses, chiming atmospherics and delay soaked tones of Dead Letter Circus is their escape from easy classification via labels or scenes. But with two #2 records, and Gold selling plaques on the wall, the message is clear – it is music that resonates. Dead Letter Circus have ascended to the forefront of alternative rock, their fresh take striking a chord locally and abroad, signing deals with Universal Publishing, The Agency Group for North America, The End Records in the USA, Triple Vision in Japan and UNFD in Australia. And while they may not be easily labelled, there is a certainty amongst the creative confusion… just one spoonful of Dead Letter Circus will leave you hungry for more… Debut album “This is the Warning” hit #2 on the national ARIA charts and spawned 6 radio singles, with 2 commercial crossover hits One Step and Cage being added to major networks, and the album being certified Gold. With the last 4 national tours SOLD OUT, the band’s videos getting international airplay, and huge stadium shows with Muse and Linkin Park, in 2011 the band lit up the main stage of the Big Day Out outdoor mega-festivals, and scored two songs in the world-famous triple j Hottest 100 Poll. More recently, DLC were voted into triple j’s Hottest Australian Albums of All Time, toured the USA three times, played SxSW, sold out shows in the UK, were voted as one of Red Bull’s Top 11 Rock Acts, a host of US rock and college radio stations jumped on board, and Total Guitar UK ranked them in their Best Guitar Albums of the Year. In 2013 Dead Letter Circus unleash their second album, The Catalyst Fire, which scored a #2 Album Chart position in Australia on release, was named Album of the Week by influential radio station triple j, and having sold out shows right around Australia, the band now embark on a two month tour to South Africa, UK/Europe, and the USA.

www.hushhushbiz.com Book Reviews by Hush Hush Biz Book Reviewer Jamie Campbell

Souls Of the Stones Omnibus by Kelly Walker The Souls of the Stone Omnibus includes Cornerstone, Second Stone, and Broken Stone. In this epic trilogy, we follow Emariya Warren as she struggles with the kidnapping of her father. Having lost her mother to invaders from another region when she was only young, Emariya and her brother are the only ones who can save their father. Agreeing to marry a prince from another region, she travels to her new kingdom in order to unite their armies and have enough power behind them to get her father back. Along the way, Emariya discovers a secret that has been buried for years. A secret that could mean her marriage is doomed before it even begins. If the magic of the cornerstones are united, the power would be too much. Souls of the Stones creates a fantasy landscape but the characters are very real. We are with Emariya for her entire journey and feel everything she does, including her heartbreaking decision. For any fans of fantasy or romance, Souls of the Stones will reel you in and not let you go until the very end.

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead Vampire Academy is the first book in a long running series that revolves around students of the St Vladimir’s Academy. Rose, a guardian who is half vampire and half human, is the tough talking, no nonsense protector for her best friend Lissa – a mortal vampire princess. Forced back to the academy after running away, Rose and Lissa have to settle back into life amongst their not-so-forgiving peers and teachers. Except life can’t return to normal when there are threats against Lissa’s life due to the deadly secret she is hiding. It is up to Rose to ensure her safety and stop her from being exposed. She also has to save Lissa from herself. Mead has created a complex world of hierarchy, social protocols, and teenage angst. Rose is a character not easily liked, but mostly understood. Lissa is the popular girl you spent your teenage years hating. While the movie looks like a must see, I wasn’t entirely sold on the book. The wide cast of interesting supporting characters is the main redeeming feature. It is a different spin on vampires, and for any lovers of the genre, they will enjoy it.

The Gold Coast Seniors Health and Lifestyle Expo is a free event and will run from 9am to 1pm. For more information visit www. gcseniorsexpos.com.au.

Nelson Twins, Joel Creasey and Mandy Nolan Currumbin's Comedy Trifecta!!! Lovers of comedy are in for a treat when Currumbin RSL presents Side Splitting Comedy with two of Australia's best up and coming comedy acts. Headlining is Joel Creasey who has been called 'utterly brilliant' and it’s no wonder; Creasey is one of the brightest stars in the Australian comedy firmament. After having burst onto the scene at the tender age of 19 he is now one of the best known and sought after comedians in the country, and he’s still only 25 years old! Creating controversy and gathering legions of new fans wherever he goes, Joel recounts mesmerizing stories of his run-ins with celebrities, politicians, football teams, regional towns and of course his parents. Lovingly referred to as ‘The Acid Tongue Prince’, in only a short time Joel has built a cult following that is rapidly spreading into the wider Australian community. People everywhere are falling in love with his intelligent observations, acerbic style and pop-culture savvy. Joel stormed the festival circuit with his show ‘Political Animal’, in which he turned his incisive mind and critical gaze toward politics, offering a step-by-step ‘Beginner’s Guide to Becoming Prime Minister’. This show went on to sell-out seasons across Australia. He is joined by comedy dopplegangers, The Nelson Twins. It's undeniable that these identical twins are one of the most unique stand-up acts in the comedy world. They came to national prominence on Australia's Got Talent, and ever

since the boys have been raising hell as one of the most sought after double acts in Australia, dazzling corporate and club crowds alike with their cheeky humour. Their big bush ranger beards and cracking one liner jokes are just a part of an amazing act never before seen on the comedy circuit. They have won several comedy awards and their TV credits also include The Footy Show, NBC’S Last Comic Standing, 2010 Australian IQ Test and a host of TV commercials. They are joined by MC Mandy Nolan at the Currumbin RSL when she presents Side Splitting Comedy on Thursday 15 May. Doors and bar open at 6.30pm with the show starting at 7.30pm. A free kids club is open until 10pm and tickets are only $20 for Club members or $25 non-members. Casey Barnes releases new single ‘Flesh & Bone’

L

ocal music success-story, Casey Barnes, has had hits in Europe, written songs in America, appeared in a top-rating TV show in Australia and played alongside many international stars. We featured Casey in Issue 4 of The Bizz GC and are excited to update you on Casey’s rise and rise in the music industry. Every morning Casey wakes and asks himself what it is he can do to get himself one step closer to where he wants to be, and it’s apparent that daily ritual is serving him well, with his new single ‘Flesh & Bone’ having been officially released on iTunes on 18th April, and his forthcoming EP due for release around June 20th. The single, co-written with Rick Price and mixed by Grammy Award winner, Jason Lehning, was announced in April as a finalist in the US based International Song-writing Comp (Country category) that had over 19,000 entries this year. We’d certainly class that as a step in getting to where you want to be as a musician, and congratulate Casey and his team on such a great achievement. The single is an energetic country-inspired song of which Casey says, “I think from a musical point of view this was by far my favourite when we recorded the new EP in Nashville. If it doesn’t get you tapping your feet and clapping your hands then I don’t know what will! It’s also my current favourite song to perform live too…it just has a great energy”. The early success of ‘Flesh and Bone’ is an exceptional follow up to Casey’s previous single ‘Valentine’ earlier this year which received national airplay, a performance on Ch7’s Weekend Sunrise and the music video being added to Foxtel’s Country Music Channel. Since speaking with Casey less than a year ago, his then current CD release ‘Jet Trails’ was included as part of the inflight entertainment of such airlines as Qantas, Cathay Pacific, British Airways, Jetstar and Virgin Airlines. He performed at gigs and festivals around the country including main stage at Queensland’s premier event ‘Caloundra Music Festival’, and he participated in Perth’s Ch.7 Telethon which raised a record sum for children’s charities, where he performed three songs during the 26hr televised event. Add to that recording in Nashville and the fact that his video for ‘Flesh and Bone’ has also been picked up by Foxtel’s CMC this week (April 2014), we’d say Casey Barnes is taking more than just steps to achieve an artist’s realisations. We were fortunate enough to get to speak with Casey again about ‘Flesh & Bone’, writing and recording with Rick Price and life as an artist.

Q. You’ve worked with Rick Price before and recorded in Nashville together, where was ‘Flesh and Bone’ recorded? A. Flesh & Bone is the title track from the new EP which was all recorded in Nashville with Rick.. it’s been great working with him again. Q. How long did this new single take to put together and tell us about the writing/recording process of it. A. It was probably the fastest song to write out of the new ones when Rick and I got together… it’s all about questioning what life is all about.. is this it or is there more to it? Is there an afterlife.. or are we all just Flesh & Bone? I guess it’s a question that everyone asks themselves at one point or another in their lives. The actual recording process what a lot of fun.. Rick invited me to fly over to Nashville and we got in some amazing musicians to play on the track. We also had Jason Lehning mix all the songs who’s a Grammy award winner so it really took all the tracks to another level. Q. Last time you spoke with The Bizz GC you told use your Mum wasn’t too keen on your last single, “Livin’ like a Love Song”; does she like Flesh and Bone? ;-) A. Ha ha.. you’ll be pleased to know Mum gives this one the big thumbs up! I actually think it’s her favourite to date so that’s good news… we’re on a winner lol Q. Flesh and Bone is the title track from your upcoming EP; can you tell us when we can expect the EP to be released? A. Good question… we’re actually looking at a release date of June the 20th with a local launch at Miami Marketta on the same night which I’m really looking forward to! Q. Tell us why an EP and not a full studio album? A. This was a very deliberate choice for a few reasons but the main one being that the music industry is really changing, and the public’s attention span for new music is becoming shorter and shorter… we wanted to make sure we put out an EP with all strong tracks then back it up most likely with another EP next year… often songs get passed by or forgotten about on an album and we wanted to make sure each track off the new EP has a chance to be heard Q. Did you collaborate with Rick Price on just the one song? A. No we’ve co-written all of the new ones together and Rick also produced the EP.. plus you’ll even hear him singing some backing vocals, guitars and a bit of harmonica too! Q. For the local artists who read this publication, can you tell us how you’ve managed to make a living out your passion – music? In an industry that seems to be so cut-throat and competitive, in a market with many restrictions and red tape issues, can you offer any advice to fellow musicians? A. Geez that’s another good question… its really getting harder and harder to make a living 100% from just music as an artist but luckily I’ve been able to scrape by mainly from trying to be as diverse as possible… one night I may be doing a solo show, the next may be with my trio then another may be with the full band… you take the good gigs with the bad ones and just keep working hard and knocking on doors. I do a lot of the behind the scenes work myself too with my publicist which makes things a lot easier. Every single day I get up and think ‘what could I be doing today to take another step closer to where I want to be?’… it’s bloody hard work but you wouldn’t have it any other way.

Casey will be performing live at the Broadbeach Country Music Festival in June, as well as his EP launch at Miami Marketta around June 20th . We strongly encourage you to get along and hear/see for yourself what the fuss is all about, before you have to travel to Nashville to see him. Don’t say we didn’t warn you! You can find ‘Flesh & Bone’ on iTunes and music video on You Tube. For more information on Casey Barnes: www.caseybarnes.com.au www.facebook.com/caseybarnesofficial www.twitter.com/casey_barnes

A Sound Argument When will Campbell Newman loosen the screws? Last week the Gold Coast Bulletin featured a story on Aaron Gomes, Jupiters Hotel and Casino General Manager and his thoughts on how the Gold Coast can move forward in the tourism sector. One of his most significant comments which hit home with me was when asked what could be done to better the Gold Coast: “To make the Gold Coast better, there needs to be greater motivation for people to innovate and greater support for those who do” says Mr Gomes. For many years now the Gold Coast, along with other regional tourism economies, has been somewhat stifled by over-regulation particularly in the hospitality sector. So it is timely to hear the comments of a prominent figurehead of the local industry echo the sentiments of many on this issue. Other issues such as the need for fast-tracking approval processes for new business ventures were also highlighted by Mr Gomes whose experience gained in the US casino industry can lend some weight to the advantages of such a move. The amount of hoops that a business needs to jump through to be a productive contributor to the tourism economy has gotten to the point in recent years where the associated costs are putting people out of business in many cases. The QLD State Government last year launched an initiative to reduce red tape in many areas of the industry. ALERT lodged a detailed submission highlighting the need for entertainment venues to be given greater powers to self regulate their noise abatement with a standardised code of conduct to be applied across the industry to streamline the system. This is aimed primarily toward reestablishing live entertainment as an integral part of regional tourism whereby offering more positive and cultural nightlife activities to keep patrons united in their night out and curbing the prospect of anti-social behaviour. Communities have had it up to the eyeballs with incidences of drunken violence giving nightspots a bad reputation, yet trying to extol the benefits offering night time revellers more entertainment options than just drinking alone in the way of more live entertainment seems to be constantly met with resistance because residents want to live in a tourism precinct but in a silent bubble. You just can’t have it both ways. What would the average resident prefer – a continued proliferation of anti-social violent behaviour due to the fact that drinking and gambling are the only options available; or the occasional bit of background noise coming from an entertainment venue keeping these people occupied and united in an enjoyable atmosphere where they are spending more time on a dance floor than they would otherwise be perched at the bar getting tanked because there is nothing else to focus on? Pretty easy answer isn’t it? We simply need to offer more incentives for licensed venues to promote live entertainment rather than making regulatory compliance so restrictive that most venues give up trying to make it work for the fear of costly infringements and potential forced closure. As yet no big decisions have come forth from the government but it is evident that the industry is crying out for these changes to once again establish the Gold Coast as an entertainment destination rather than a seedy nightspot whose notoriety lately stems more around reports of bikie gang activity and drunken violence.

This is a city with one of the most spectacular backdrops a tourist destination could ask for. We need to offer prospective visitors a more positive reputation if we wish to encourage them to visit us to enjoy not just day-time theme park attractions but also a colourful, vibrant and diverse nightlife experience. There is amazing musical talent and culture simmering under the surface of this great city. We just need the opportunities to show it to the world and give them more reasons to come back. Help us out here Campbell.... Visit the ALERT Facebook page and give us your views. We look forward to your comments. www.facebook.com/ALERTforum Shane Wilkie Co-founder, Australian Live Entertainment Reform Think-tank

launch new album at Wallapalooza 2014 Local heavyweights AZREAL will not only be hitting the stage at Wallapalooza 2014, but will be launching their new full length album, “Premonition”, at this year’s event. We know AZREAL to be a groove-infused metal band, and on the sound of their upcoming album, guitarist Andrew “Jimmy” Glinster says, “Well, it’s thrashy, it’s doomy, it’s sludgy and at some points it’s just downright groovy!” He tells us, “The ‘Better Dead’ album was an expression of our disappointment with the world (and of course religion), but we are no longer upset… we are just down right pissed off! And the new songs express this with in-your-face aggression and power.” “Premonition” is AZREAL’s first full length album with drummer, Chris Dennis who made his debut appearance at Wallapalooza 2013. In its final stages of production, the album will have 10, maybe 11 tracks and will include the previously released single “Cease to Be” as well as “The Wait” and “Fall to Pieces” which have been part of the live set at the band’s last couple of shows. An alternative version of “Rot with Me” is also included, and has also been performed live with a great crowd response. Recorded at Love St Studios in Currumbin by Scott French (who mixed the “Better Dead” album and “Cease to Be” singe) and mastered by Rick O’Neil of Turtlerock Mastering, “Premonition” will available on iTunes and all other digital music providers from 8th June 2014, and pre-orders from mid-May. CD hard copies will be available at all album launch shows following the official release at Wallapalooza 2014, and distribution through JB Hi Fi stores across the country is in current negotiations. AZREAL is embarking on an album launch tour, and a heads-up to all metal and live music fans, the band will be holding a Prerelease listening party that will be a limited number and ‘invite only’ event! Christian James AKA Boi Blue A firm hit at Wallapalooza 2013, Aussie rapper Christian James returns this year to wow the punters with his new hardcore raps. We at the Bizz GC are ‘rapt’ with Christian’s decision to go by his real name as opposed to that of Boi Blue which served him well as he grew a strong and loyal fanbase. Christian James has a new mix-tape “A Day In My Shoes” which received over 4,000 downloads in its first week of release and is available as a free download at www.DatPiff.com. The mix-tape features more than 20 tracks including collaborations with Funk Volume’s SwizZz and Dizzy Wright, as well as his local GC crew Baden Knight and Codeine Green who will both also be on stage at Wallapalooza 2014. Christian’s show is not for the faint-hearted with his passionate rapid-fire delivery, heavy hitting lyrics and weighty subject matter. Wallapalooza 2014 Flannelette "If it’s hard-hitting rock you are after, Brisbane’s Flannelette is your answer. Thick chunky riffs and monster licks that will have you raising the symbol of rock proudly into the air!" - Tsunami Magazine Beginning in 2010, Flannelette were well on their way to rock star greatest when tragedy struck. Vowing to never give up on their dreams, new members were found and by 2012, Flannelette exploded back onto the music scene in spectacular fashion, achieving no. 2 on 4zzz's Hot 100 in only their first year together. After headlining Brisbane's 'Hi-Fi' for their first show in February 2012 Flannelette then set out to take over Australia's east coast by gigging almost every weekend. 2013, saw new bass player Jaymes Farr join Matt Campbell, vocals/ guitar, Shaun Belcher, guitar, and Gordon Patterson on drums. The new line up became quickly like a family and Flannelette jumped straight into regular gigs and tours again. In ___ 2013, they took the trek up to Mt Nebo to record with Neil at The White Room. The result of this will be found on their upcoming EP Valley Nights, which will be out by June 2014. The guys can’t wait to rock the house down at Wallapalooza 2014! PRESS CLIPPINGS “There are moments in life where you have an uncanny instinctual feeling you have just witnessed or are in the presence of greatness. I had one of these moments the first time I listened to a Flannelette track. Now every time I even think of the hard hitting rock band I get Goosebumps. The only other explanation is that they just have that unexplainable special something that all true rock gods seem to have.” - Kerry Keightley, Scope Magazine

"Flannelette always bring a positive sound, vibe and crowd to The Hi-Fi Brisbane. Professional and easy to deal with on any occasion. We look forward to having Flannelette at our venues anytime!" - James Power, Live Content & Entertainment Manager @ The Hi-Fi "Flannelette rocked the Coolum Hotel like no other. MASON RACK ROCKS SHARKS

Born at Southport Hospital, Mason Rack was raised on jazz, rock and surfing. He started playing percussions at the age of six with his musician father. Progressing to drums, Mason was able to play any style of music from a young age but soon discovered his natural rhythm that is now part of his soul and way of life. On May 9th, Mason and his band will once again return home to entertain you with their mix of heavy rock, blues, jazz and roots at Sharks. He’s joined by conservatorium of music graduate Aram Anson on drums and Michael ‘Blacky’ Cole on bass. Together these three talented musicians erupt in a magical display of performance, which has to be seen to be believed. With over two thousand live performances, eight international tours including Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Japan and Vanuatu his guitar chops, performing skills and spellbinding shows are something not to me missed. Known for a swampy blues / rock sound, the band influences include flashes of Tom Waits, and Muddy Waters with roots extending to Ben Harper. Throw in a slide guitar, raspy vocals, a rocking, bluesy bass, massive drum percussion and the result is a spectacular kaleidoscope of musical genres.

16 - 22 May Mon 19 May

The Gold Coast is home to many musicians from every genre, and as we watch live music grow in popularity (as it should), there are Open Mic and Jam nights appearing all over the city. From seasoned muso’s to those wanting to get a bit of experience in front of a crowd Open Mic and Jam nights are a great way to spend an evening for artists and audience alike. More and more venues are taking on the special sessions as musicians network, practice and perform for a music-appreciating audience as they enjoy a relaxing drink and dinner with friends and family. We hope to see this guide grow with every edition and encourage everyone to attend one of these nights!
