GROWING PRO EAST TENNESSEE COMPANY TURNS SURPRISE DISCOVERY INTO BLACK GOLD FOR GROWERS! At Proton Power, we’re proud to introduce our first soil amendment product: Pro-C Carbon Soil Enhancer. Researchers were stunned by the dramatic growth (400% & 800% respectively) of poplar trees after Pro-C was introduced to the soil. From this discovery, we set out to create the best, most natural line of sustainable soil products available for gardeners, nurseries, farmers and arborists.

Three rows of poplar trees were planted March 7, 2014. The native clay soil in rows #1 and #3 were amended with 40- and 10-tons-per-acre application rates of Pro-C™ Carbon Soil Enhancer. Our test Row #2 received zero amendments. You can see the difference the Pro-C makes.

A HAPPY SURPRISE. We discovered soil needs carbon to help it retain water and nutrients, prevent compaction and promote healthy roots. The rich, black carbon in Pro-C transforms soil, altering its physical structure. Pro-C is ideal for ornamentals, vegetables, herbs, trees and turfgrass.

ow that Spring has come, we can turn to the positive and vibrant time of the year that Spring and Summer promise. During these past cold, winter months, The Bingham Group, a full-service marketing communications company located in Knoxville, has been working hard to produce a magazine that not only accentuates the local businesses in Farragut and West Knoxville, but also some of the vibrant personalities of the residents who call it home. We are extremely proud to produce the fruits of our labor, the very first issue of Farragut Life magazine! Earlier this year, we attended the inauguration of Governor Haslem to bring you the story. We also have a behind-thescenes look at East Tennessee’s own Supreme Court Chief Justice, Sharon Lee. I took my twins to see Chief Justice Lee swear in our Governor. We do love stories about strong women! The power of the state is now completely controlled by East Tennesseans. This issue is full of stories that are sure to please every reader. Enjoy an inside look at the Farragut Folklife Museum, learn about the history and legacy of great Admiral Farragut and indulge in a piece on Seasons restaurant contributed by owner Deron Little. Also featured is the stunning wedding of local WBIR Channel 10 “Live at Five at Four” news anchor, Beth Haynes, at the historic Tennessee Theatre. Farragut’s own Knoxville Christian School and SouthEast Bank also allow readers a unique opportunity to learn about their own stories in this inaugural issue. We at the Bingham Group would like to extend a very special thanks to all of our advertisers who have made this publication possible. Without you shedding a beautiful new light upon Farragut, West Knoxville and the surrounding areas, the magazine would not be possible. In the next issue, we have a behind-the-scenes story about East Tennessee native, Seattle Seahawks Coach Kippy Brown, who just retired. We traveled to Seattle last November to visit with Kippy and his beautiful wife, Deon. We have interviews with Coach Fulmer, Coach Majors, Coach Williamson and current and former Seattle Seahawks players.

David Farragut: First Admiral of the United States Navy Written By Phil Roulier

David Farragut was born near the Holston River, about two miles off of what is now Campbell Station Road. His birth father, a Spanish merchant who had aided the American Colonies in the Revolutionary War, gave him up for adoption after his mother passed away from a case of yellow fever. His adopted father, a friend of his birth father and naval officer by the name of David Porter, would be his guardian for the rest of his young life and implant in young Farragut the seed of duty and greatness that would soon spring into fruition. Because of this and out of sheer admiration and respect, young Farragut would change his first given name of James to David in honor of his adopted father. David Farragut’s young naval career began most prominently in the Caribbean, where he spent many years on warships fighting off pirates and raiders who attempted to rob vessels of their wealth. He also served in the Mexican-American War as a commander of the USS Saratoga. His skills in tactical naval combat were only paralleled by his rapid promotion within the Navy, and ultimately, he found himself a captain. He moved from his home in East Tennessee to Virginia, where he was stationed before the event that would define his significance in the time to follow: the beginning of the Civil War. Though he lived in Virginia and was born and raised in Tennessee, David Farragut

openly opposed the idea of a Confederate State. When President Lincoln called troops after the fall of Fort Sumter, Farragut very openly and publicly declared that the President had every right to do so. He also stated that the majority of Virginians and Tennesseans alike were not in agreement with their Confederate governments, and that the majority of these citizens were actually being forced against their will into confrontation with the North. Though he had gained a prominent reputation within the Navy, Farragut’s claims were met with contempt by his fellow Southerners in the government. He was asked to leave Virginia, which he did with much haste, fearing a violent consequence was in store for him and his wife if they refused. After his move, he immediately requested a position in the Union’s Navy. Primarily, he was granted

a title on the naval council, as the Union naval officers were understandably wary of this Southern officer’s interest in the cause. Farragut never complained or offered resistance; he did his duty well. Within a few short months, the Union’s battle strategists had decided that based on his credentials, David Farragut would be best-suited for their most important naval endeavor in the war: the bombardment and capture of the city of New Orleans. New Orleans: the teeming city playing host to the mouth of the mighty Mississippi as she spills out into the Gulf of Mexico. One of the main ports for the Confederacy, by far one of the richest cities in the South and the gateway to the Mississippi, which was crucial to the Confederacy’s movement of supplies. This was Admiral Farragut’s goal,

Featured above is a painted protrayal of the Splendid Naval Triumph on the Mississippi, April 24, 1862. The artwork’s original caption gave credit to Admiral Farragut by stating: “Destruction of the Rebel Gunboats, Rams and Iron Clad Batteries by the Union Fleet under Flag Officer Farragut.”

what he was destined to do. He would take the city of New Orleans for President Lincoln and the North. He was awarded the title of Flag Officer and amassed a fleet off the coast of Florida, which he then sailed down just outside of the port of New Orleans. Through heroic bravery and expert tactical ability, Farragut was able to take the port of New Orleans and the surrounding areas, giving the Union land troops a gateway into the city and blocking Confederate supplies from the Southwest. It was in this series of battles that he would declare his famous words. When told to use caution in maneuvering the river ahead due to the numerous

torpedos the Confederacy had planted for the incoming Union fleet, he dismissed the warning, declaring quite boldly and famously, “Damn the torpedos! Full speed ahead!” This victory would be a definitive battle in the Civil War and would be the greatest accomplishment of his life. David Farragut continued his dedication to the Navy after the war. After his heroic capture of New Orleans, he was promoted to Rear Admiral, the highest honor in the American Navy at the time. In December of 1864, he was the very first U.S. officer in history to be granted the title of Admiral of the American Navy, leader and

commander of all U.S. naval forces. This title he held until his death in 1870. Admiral Farragut was not simply a man: he was an inspirational leader, bold and fierce. He had that Southern Tennessee pride found in many Tennessee Volunteers, but he also had the strength and fortitude to discover and fight for what was right. Rarely does the common man or woman dwell on the past, remembering those men and women who have shaped the world around us. So today, for all of us who dwell in Farragut, let us remember the great man for whom our town is named: David Farragut, the first Admiral of the United States Navy.

ave you ever wondered what life was like in our community before the streets were filled with cars, shops and restaurants? When the days were quieter and the land was being settled for the first time? The Farragut Folklife Museum located in the Farragut Town Hall invites guests to journey through the pages of history, to hear the thunder of cannons from the Civil War, to experience community life from the late 1700s to the early 1900s and to discover all of the fascinating artifacts from our own hometown. The Farragut Folklife Museum invites locals and tourists alike to take a step back in time and learn about the rich history of the Farragut area. Volunteer tour guides are always available to give personal, one-on-one guided tours of the town’s historic past. Currently, there are three sections to the museum – the folk life gallery, Admiral Farragut and a special space for rotating gallery exhibits. In the Folklife Gallery, you will learn about community history. You will travel back in time as far as 3,000 years ago when Native Americans settled the area. In

1785, Tennessee, the state of Franklin at the time, would enter into an agreement with the Cherokees to allow settlers to utilize land on the French Broad and Holston Rivers – this would result in the settlement of Campbell Station. Concord was developed later, in 1854, by James M. Rodgers. As time passed, the East Tennessee and Georgia railroads would change the way of life for farmers in the area, allowing for improved methods of import and export of goods. As the area grew, Farragut High School was created in the year 1902. The Farragut

and Concord communities have continued to grow thanks to visionary leaders who paved the way for future generations of Tennesseans. All of the details of the community’s history can be uncovered in the first section of the museum. As you journey to the second portion of the museum, you will learn about Admiral Farragut, the first commissioned Rear, Vice and Full Admiral of the Navy. Born in 1802, this Admiral entered the Navy as a midshipman’s warrant at only nine

years old. At age twelve, he was given command of the U.S.S. Essex. Years later as the Civil War began, Farragut declared his allegiance to the Union. He is most known for the Battle of Mobile Bay where he charged through a torpedo field with no losses shouting his infamous charge, “Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!” After taking Mobile in 1864, Farragut’s active service came to an end. His life, service to the Union and career are all detailed throughout the museum,

with the most extensive collection of artifacts, letters and papers from the Admiral in the country. The last portion of the museum features special exhibits typically on rotation every six months. In the past, the museum has featured exhibits such as The Manhattan Project and the Civil War. This year, new galleries will be introduced, including a railroad exhibit that includes artifacts and history from the railroads in Concord. Model trains will also be on display.

Special events are often coordinated with the rotating exhibits. To take a journey to the past at the Farragut Folklife Museum or for more information about upcoming exhibits or events, visit: www.townoffarragut.org/museum or call 865-966-7057. his story begins with a certain ambitious gentleman, a family recipe and a dream. Before the fame, awards and recognition, there was the recipe, a delicious blend of dry-rub seasonings that has been in owner Matt Beeler’s family for generations. “Nothing ever beat my family’s homemade wings,” said Matt, “and I wanted to share that with the world.” Thus the Big Kahuna Wings rub was born. As the company grew, distribution began to expand to other regions of the South, and Matt’s homemade family recipe of dry-rub began sparking the interest of such retail giants as Kroger, Food City and Ingles. As the company continued to gain acclaim, The Big Kahuna Wings Team began experimenting with the seasonings and found that different variations of the original dry-rub recipe were ideal for other popular foods like steak, burgers, sandwiches, fish and so on. This led to seven new blends to be developed, all based on the foundation of that original, award-winning recipe. All of this success led to the simple question on everyone’s mind: where was the Big Kahuna restaurant? In 1997, The Big Kahuna Wings team finally decided to set up a location in downtown Knoxville. The following year, they entered the “War of the Wings” festival in Knoxville, and competed with 29 local, regional and national wing restaurants and were voted BEST WINGS in Knoxville. And so the legend was born.

20

FARRAGUT LIFE INAUGURAL EDITION

In 2013, The Big Kahuna Team began conceptualizing an idea for a local restaurant, which was spurred on by the intense demand from their loyal customers. Since Matt had grown up in the area, Farragut was the ideal choice. The very next year, Big Kahuna Wings in Farragut was born! Located off Kingston Pike, this charming wing restaurant features a family-friendly experience, fast and friendly service and, of course, the delicious mouthwatering, dryrubbed wings that have spurred the demand for the restaurant. “The dry-rub is one of our main strengths,” says Matt. “We are the only wing restaurant in the country that is focused on dry-rub style wings. All of our sauces are made in-house and are served on the side.

The rub is what makes our wings stand out.” Not only are the sauces made inhouse, everything else is, as well. All of the salad dressings and sauces are made fresh daily. “Nothing is ever frozen, everything is made to order, and we pride ourselves on that.” If you love fresh, jumbo-sized wings with a unique flavor and a family atmosphere, Big Kahuna Wings is the place for you. So drop on in, experience the recipe that has been making mouths water since the 60s and enjoy the best wings in Knoxville! Governor Bill Haslam

Brings A Message Of Challenge And Hope In His Second Inauguration Written & Photographed By Emily Walls

O

n January 17, 2015, anticipation filled the air as citizens of Tennessee waited on a cool, sunny day to hear the inaugural address from our 49th Governor of the state of Tennessee. The majestic capitol building towered in the distance, offering a symbol of steadfast resolve that the Governor would bring to Tennesseans on this beautiful, yet windy winter day. Earlier in the morning, a prayer service was held for the Governor at the Ryman Auditorium, setting a tone of reverence and respect that reflected on the goodness of God and the seriousness of the position the Governor will once again embark upon for the next four years. The service began with a prayer to “shift our eyes and hearts to the Giver of all good gifts.” The choir led participants into a time of worship when they sang “Great is Thy Faithfulness”. The Governor himself was honored when Scott Sauls, Pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville, said, “Your character is bigger than your abilities, and your humility is bigger than your platform.” He went on to say Governor

Haslam “puts Jesus, family, friends and the common good in front of his own ambition.” The Governor himself chose all of the scripture readings for the service, and Pastor Sauls spoke directly to the Governor about Hebrews 11 and the Heroes of Faith, saying, ”We are all part of a bigger story. We are called here for a time.” In summary, we don’t always see the results of our working, but “we don’t know what God is up to – remember the cross.” Singers Ricky Skaggs, Jars of Clay, Nicole C. Mullen and Amy Grant all sang and brought

attendees to a time of prayer and personal reflection. The seriousness, reverence and Biblically focused nature of the service brought guests to a time of both personal reflection and heartfelt prayer for the leaders of our state. The prayer service led up to the Inauguration, which was held outside at the Legislative Plaza in front of the Tennessee Capitol. While citizens anticipated his speech, Trace Adkins led “The Star-Spangled Banner”. Approximately one thousand attendees united in one voice under the flag of our nation to hear the inaugural address of Governor Haslam. After being sworn in by the Chief Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court, Sharon Lee, the Left to right:Ricky Staggs, Nicole C. Mullin, Amy Grant and Jim Haslam II.

confident and optimistic Haslam focused on three main topics in his inaugural speech: creating a more effective and efficient state government, better education opportunities for Tennessee residents and creating quality, high paying jobs within the state. He recognized the progress we have made within the state, saying, “We have the lowest debt per person of any of the 50 states. Our tax rates remain among the lowest in the country. Tennessee has now gone longer without a significant tax increase than in any time in modern history.” In regards to education, he confidently boasted that Tennessee is “now the fastest improving state in the country. Our high school graduation rates have increased from 76 percent to 88 percent over the past decade.” He continued, “We are the first state ever to promise high school graduates the chance to attend community college or technical school free of tuition and fees.” This statement came just over a week after President Barack Obama visited Pellissippi State College and endorsed the Tennessee Promise program backed by Governor Haslam, as President Obama hopes to provide tuition-free community college across the nation.

Regarding jobs, Haslam stated, “On the job front, we have added 210,000 net new private sector jobs since January 2011.”

“We can do this together, and to reach our full potential, we have to do it together.” He concludes, “Four years from now, someone

“For the last two years in a row, Tennessee has been named the ‘State of the Year’ for economic development. No state has ever won that award in back-to-back years.” With all of these accomplishments, Haslam was quick to say we will not coast to the finish line the next four years. He called all to participate in the well-being of our state when he said, “It's about all of us. The Governor, legislators, state employees, teachers, parents, community leaders, business executives, health care professionals, faith leaders and citizens of all kinds saying: ‘We are on the right path, but we can do better, and we must do better." He continued to stress that education is key to address the many challenges our state faces in the future. “It will mean more jobs for more Tennesseans, less reliance on federal and state services, higher incomes, healthier citizens, and the list goes on.” He finalized his speech with a challenge and a note of optimism when he said,

else will be standing here, and I will be sitting up here watching and cheering. On that day, like this day, I will know that Tennessee's best days are ahead of us.” As Governor Haslam concluded his speech, citizens were encouraged and challenged to create a better state, one with greater educational opportunities, which will in turn create a future hope for our generation and the generations to come in the great state of Tennessee.

Liberty and Justice For All Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Sharon Lee Leads with Honor Written By Emily Walls

W

alking into the Tennessee Supreme Court in Knoxville, you can’t help but be in awe of the white stately columns that greet you at the entrance. They symbolize the admiration and respect we have for those who preside over the courts of our great state. One of these influential leaders is Madisonville native, Sharon Gail Lee, who serves as the current Chief Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court. Justice Lee grew up in Madisonville, where she watched her mother, Judy B. Lee, serve as Clerk and Master in Monroe County Chancery and Probate courts. She would often walk from school to the courthouse and sit in the back to listen to the proceedings. Her father, Charles J. Lee, was a World War II veteran and served on the county commission. Justice Lee didn’t grow up dreaming of being a lawyer.

It wasn’t until she attended the University of Tennessee, where she majored in accounting, that she knew she wanted to pursue a career in the law. Lee attended the University of Tennessee for law school, and she loved it. While in school, she worked for her uncle J.D. Lee, a nationally known attorney who had an office in her hometown of Madisonville. He gave her the opportunity to work while she was going through law school, taking on research projects and learning the practice as she was getting her education. This not only helped her bring in a little extra money, but it also helped prepare her to be a lawyer. After graduation, she continued to work for her uncle a little over a year and then opened her own practice in her hometown. She loved the idea of being her own boss, and she wanted to stay in Madisonville where she felt she could

really work one-on-one with people. She says, “Having a small town practice was very rewarding. I loved working with people, and it was so gratifying to see the results of my work. I wouldn’t change anything about it.” She practiced law in Madisonville from 1978 to 2004 where, over the span of these years, she served as a county attorney for Monroe County, Madisonville city judge and a city attorney for Vonore and Madisonville. She then served on the Court of Appeals from 2004 to 2008. While Justice Lee enjoyed her job as an attorney, having the ability to look at both sides of a case, as well as ensure the Tennessee courts were fair and impartial, was appealing. She also liked the idea of being able to make the final decision. In October 2008, former Governor Phil Bredesen appointed Lee as a Justice on the Tennessee Supreme Court. In August 2014, Justice Sharon Lee won a contested statewide election to serve an 8-year term. In September, she was elected Chief Justice.

Chief Justice Sharon Lee’s example of leadership and her ambitious pursuit of positive change have begun to produce results. Recently, Chief Justice Lee’s idea for a Tennessee Business Court came to fruition. The justices have now implemented a new standard for business cases in Tennessee’s Court System. This system allows business cases to be solved more efficiently, with a customized process developed solely for business disputes. Chief Justice Lee’s motives for this new method of business court in Tennessee were simple. “We have a need for a consistent and predicate legal process for businesses. A solid business court would be a relevant tool for the attraction and retention of all manner of business in Tennessee.”

Despite an opposition campaign led by Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, Tennesseans recently voted to retain all three of their incumbent Supreme Court Justices, including Sharon Lee. Ramsey himself was quoted as saying, “For the first time in decades, we had a real election for the Supreme Court. Our Supreme Court justices traveled the state of Tennessee this summer meeting Tennesseans and learning things about our state that you can’t find in any law book. Because of that, more Tennesseans than ever know the names of our Supreme Court justices and are aware they have a role in deciding who sits on the high court.”

A Day in the Life of a Chief Supreme Court Justice Enormous respect and honor accompany the position of a state Supreme Court Justice, even more so, the Chief Supreme Court Justice, but what exactly does this role entail? According to Justice Lee, the primary role is to “uphold the constitution and make the best decisions under the law.” As Chief Justice, she sits in the center of the bench. She leads the questioning and controls the proceedings. While that is her role in the courtroom, her job is different every day. Her responsibilities vary from getting ready for court and reading briefs to hearing cases, preparing for conferences, writing opinions, as well as attending a variety of other events. She spends a great deal of time speaking to schools, non-profit organizations and charities all across the state. She recently swore in Governor Bill Haslam at his inauguration, which was a special moment, as just months before he swore her in as Chief Supreme Court Justice. As Chief Justice, she has an added layer of administrative responsibility. Justice Lee states that she wants to create “an aggressive path for doing things better in the courts.” One of her current priorities is making the courts become more efficient by implementing electronic filing. This allows attorneys the ability to process their cases in the most efficient way possible. She has declared that “Tennessee

28

is Open for Business” by establishing the State’s first Business Court to handle complex commercial disputes more efficiently. Justice Lee states that overall, she hopes to make the court “more accessible, transparent and efficient as possible for the citizens of Tennessee.” She is committed to ensuring that everyone, regardless of their financial means, has representation in court. She recently spoke at a White House Forum and a U.S. Senate Briefing on ways Tennessee has successfully increased access to the justice system.

think it is very important to have women in positions of authority. It is also important to be that role model to young women, and for them to see other women in that position.” Justice Lee has certainly carved a path for other young women who may desire the same career. She states, “As a woman, I never used my gender as a crutch. I knew I had to work harder, and when I do well, it makes other women more easily accepted. Once you reach the top, you can pull others up with you through mentoring and encouraging those who have the same passion.”

Paving the Way Through Inspiration

Justice Lee takes a great deal of pride when young girls tell her, “I want to be a judge one day.” Many parents have related to her that she has been an inspiration to their daughters. She makes it a point to speak at schools, youth groups and the American Legion Boys State as well as the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State. It is important for her to be that role model for other children and young adults.

Justice Lee spoke of her proudest moments, and there were two that came to the forefront. In 2004, she was appointed to the Tennessee Court of Appeals. “I think it is very important to have women in positions of authority.” She also stated winning the retention election in August of last year after campaigning across the state was a moment she will never forget. When asked about whether she ever pictured herself as the Chief Supreme Court Justice of Tennessee, she replied, “I always dreamed big, but I never pictured myself as the Chief Supreme Court Justice. Sometimes you just have to see things to actually believe them. I

Chief Supreme Court Justice Sharon Gail Lee is an inspiration to us all. She is proof that when you work hard, serve others and lead with confidence, you can achieve the heights beyond your greatest dreams. As she steps into the courtroom day in and day out as an honorable and respectable judge, she makes it her goal to ensure all Tennessee citizens receive liberty and justice for all under the protection of our enduring constitution.

Constructs A Future-Proof Building Written By Derek Dujardin

B

esides being one of the fastestgrowing financial institutions in Tennessee, SouthEast Bank is banking on sustainable future for itself and the community with its latest branch in Farragut, TN. The new 32,000 sq. ft., four-story branch and corporate office building, located in Farragut, TN, is touted by many, including the Mayor of Farragut Ralph McGill, as “a model for what business development can attain” in terms of economic, environmental and technological efficiencies. However, it’s important to note that being a model for sustainability and green LEED® certification was not the goal when the project began. SouthEast Bank Executive Chairman John Arnold worked with Knick Myers of Myers Bros. Holdings and Trent Ferrell of Blue Ridge Architecture to create a classic architectural style that would never appear dated, while also providing state-ofthe-art systems and infrastructure allowing for long term/low maintenance operation. Johnson & Galyon was the general contractor on the building, and SouthEast Bank Chief Information Officer Jeff Gibbs orchestrated the innovative technological applications that exist today in the model building. Many of the most sustainable ideas were also the most economical in terms of “total cost of ownership.” While it costs more

30

FARRAGUT LIFE INAUGURAL EDITION

in the front-end, the cost savings on the back-end was worth the additional expense. While many eco-friendly buildings look like they belong on the set of a science fiction movie, the Farragut location blends in well with the nearby Renaissance Plaza Business Park. It exceeds both aesthetic and infrastructural guidelines requested by the city of Farragut. In fact, many town residents and those involved in the project referred to it as “the brand-new, hundred-yearold building” for its beautiful architectural elements and details.

Eco-Friendly Brick by Brick • 80% power savings. The building uses only 20% of the power of similar-sized 32,000 sq. ft. buildings. To put that into perspective, this four-story building uses the same amount of energy as two singlefamily homes. • DC powered IT network. The fiber optic network runs off DC power, requiring only 30 amps on average. That’s less energy consumption than the average camper trailer! • EcoWhite roof. White foam spray on the roof reflects heat and doesn’t allow water and temperature penetration. • LED lighting. All exterior and interior lighting is 100 percent LED bulbs.

Motion and audio sensors detect when a room is unoccupied and shut down power automatically. • Natural light. More than 4,500 sq. ft. of windows allows in more natural light to illuminate offices and public areas. UV tinting on the windows blocks out 99% of UV light, rejecting 40% of heat from direct sunlight, reducing the need for air conditioning during warm months. • Future-proof fiber optics. The building uses fiber optic cabling instead of copper cabling, which requires only 40 lbs. of raw material versus 2,400 lbs. of copper. Plus, copper is an old and slow technology and likely to be obsolete in five years. The fiber optic system is expected to last a minimum of 25 years. • Thick insulation. One foot of foam insulation keeps the building warm in the winter and cool in the summer. • Smart parking. Instead of asphalt that promotes excessive runoff, the parking lot uses paving stones and two feet of compressed gravel to naturally filtrate rainwater before water enters sensitive watershed. Expensive holding tanks and oil-removing eco scrubbers are not necessary.

Photo By Jimmy Chiarella with JC Studios.

First of “ITs” kind in the world. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the building is the breakthrough network infrastructure that is literally the first of its kind in the world. Conventional networks transmit data over copper wire that has distance limitations and uses hardware that generate heat, requiring additional cooling to keep all components within operating temperatures. SouthEast Bank Chief Information Officer Jeff Gibbs worked with ZHONE, TE, Taylor Telecom Solutions and SOLARA to create a fiber optic infrastructure that runs on DC power, providing fiber optic connectivity to the desktop. Besides eliminating the need for elaborate HVAC systems to keep equipment cool, the entire network runs on just 32 amps of electricity. That’s equivalent to the electricity that a small camper trailer consumes! Scientists and engineers from Oak Ridge National Labs and other interested parties have toured the facility to see how SouthEast Bank built and uses this breakthrough network.

Knoxville Christian School “Our Standard is Jesus Christ”

Written By Phil Roulier | Photography By Alex Banakas & Ben Gibson

“We are so thankful for the opportunity to serve this many students. We prayed for God’s guidance, and he has blessed us richly. It seems that more and more parents are looking for the safe, positive, Christian environment, like the one we can provide, for their most precious possessions, their children. And the quality of our faculty and staff is unmatched.” Jim Fox, President

t is perhaps the most important choice parents can make for their children. Despite their very loud and adamant stance against the very idea of attending class over a day of mud and fun, we know that our children’s education is vital to their future and can very well shape the way they develop as individuals. Knowing this, parents will search for the best possible education for our children, to shape them

both intellectually and morally, giving them the tools necessary to become successful and, more importantly, righteous people. Here in our town of Farragut, Knoxville Christian School feels the same way. Taught students about the world around us and the Word of God for over 30 years, KCS provides your children the best moral and intellectual setting possible.

KCS is located in the Farragut city limits on 16.2 square miles of beautiful land, a generous gift from the Paul Shirley family over 30 years ago. The school itself had its first ever year in 1978, making it the oldest private school in Farragut. Founded on the moral principles of Jesus Christ and the Christian faith, KCS has sought to exceed the expectations of parents and board members alike, having received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and National Christian School Association (NCSA). At Knoxville Christian School, the dedicated faculty take this message to heart, teaching

1 Corinthians 10:31 states, “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” children to glorify God while implanting in them the seeds needed to one day flourish in this world of ours. Offering grades from pre K 3 all the way to grade 12, KCS harbors a plethora of individuality. The mission of Knoxville Christian stays the same no matter the age of the student: to develop students spiritually, emotionally, academically and physically with Jesus Christ as their standard and the Bible as their foundation, preparing them to be Godly representatives in their community, church and home. The Knoxville Christian School’s non-denominational nature gives students the freedom to harbor individual Christian beliefs while still holding Jesus Christ as the everyday standard. That standard is not only upheld by the students, but by the faculty and staff, as well. The staff’s dedication to the Word of God and

their love of Jesus Christ makes it easy to see why students and parents alike have responded so strongly to the curriculum here. Smaller class sizes mean more individual attention to each student, making KCS an incredibly intimate and customized learning environment. A recent sruvey of our parents revealed these top 6 reasons why they chose KCS and elect to stay there: 1) Christian world view of the school 2) Small class sizes 3) Strong academics 4) Affordability 5) Excellent athletics 6) Recommendations of others Our families love Knoxville Christian School!

KINDERGARTEN: The KCS kindergarten program is the perfect way to start your child’s journey through the knowledge needed to become successful in school and a deep knowlege of Christ. There is one classroom for this age group, and the program is designed so that the children are given the introductory social and academic skills needed to become successful students.

In recent years, KCS has made major renovations to both the school’s facilities and the curriculum. In 2013, KCS was proud to announce the grand opening of the Wade and Allen Houston Gymnasium, a state-of-the-art facility aimed at giving students the equipment and sportsoriented setting they need. A state-of-the-art science laboratory was also installed as part of the new high school. In the last several years, new academic programs and standards have been set in place. These new programs have yielded fantastic results. In fact, in the most recent Niche ranking, which rates private schools on their academic excellence, Knoxville Christian School ranked 35th overall in the State of Tennessee, and 4th in Knoxville. This amazing success has been a catalyst for future development in all areas of our school. As principal Jarra Snyder explains, “Our ACT scores averaged 25.7 this past year. Our seniors were accepted to colleges of their choice, moreover, student extracurricular activities and volunteer services have also increased and students are taking on more leadership roles. Our goal is for these improvements to continue.

Exquisite beauty, the aroma of vanilla charm and the spacious complexity of a manor. Designed by Jack Herr & Associates and built by Brookwood Construction & Engineers, this stunning home is one of the most beautiful in West Knoxville. The current residents, Cheri and Mark Rosenbaum, were responsible for the lavish and cozy interior design. It features an open-design floor plan and has a scenic view of the Appalachian Mountain Range. This could never be considered merely a house; it is very much a home, and one cannot help but feel at home when taking it all in. Cheri and Mark Rosenbaum have labeled themselves as “professional movers. The two met in college, and since their marriage, they INAUGURAL EDITION FARRAGUT LIFE

Before this home, Cheri and Mark had lived in Ohio, but they wanted a place to settle down in Farragut, the town in which Cheri was born. Their home search was vast and, for a time, fruitless. Then they found Bridgemore, Farragut’s luxury subdivision. “We loved the land, the new development and all the amenities, the natural beauty, the clubhouse and pool, and especially the two swans that have made their home in the entranceway fountain. At the end of the day, it was an easy decision to purchase the house,” said Cheri. “It really is a wonderful place to live,” said Cheri. “Everyone has their own space, and with kids in the house, that’s a must.” Bought in 2007, this 350-acre development is one of the most spacious and sensational new subdivisions in West Knoxville. hen an idea is brought forth with a spark of innovation and inspiration and is coupled with a strong desire to succeed, there can be no doubt success will follow. Such are the foundations of great business and what founder of Premier Eyecare, Dr. Brent Fry, sets as his personal standard of excellence. Dr. Fry, who grew up in the community and graduated from Farragut High School, said that he had always wanted to become a doctor. “My father was a physician, so naturally I felt as though the medical field was my calling.” Dr. Fry went on to attend Lipscomb University for his Bachelor’s Degree in Nashville, TN, and in 1998, he received his Doctor of Optometry Degree from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN. After practicing optometry for several years in Franklin, Dr. Fry and his wife Melinda decided to move back to Farragut. Dr. Fry felt a passion for the Farragut community and a deep calling to serve the place he had called home in his childhood. “I had looked about the possibility of joining another practice, but none of them were quite right for me. So I decided to start my own practice and become the new level of eyecare standard within the community.” Thus Premier Eyecare was born, coupling cutting-edge technology with quality customer service and Dr. Fry’s own personal touch. Dr. Fry himself is the sole Optometric Physician, taking the time to see every patient that walks through the door, ensuring that each customer is taken care of and given a personalized experience. The Trouble With Birds Written By Phil Roulier

T

hough Spring brings us warmth and joy, there is a singular phenomenon that has homeowners baffled, a problem that brings questions unanswered to the doorstep of the very virtue of the season itself. Often during this time birds (usually robins) seem to run themselves into the glass of homeowners’ windows and doors far more often than other times of the year. Why is this?

(Top) Wearing glasses never looked this good: a variety of styles, all customized with individual prescription and a personal design. Premier Eyecare showcases the most premium brands available. (Middle) Jeriel, Jennifer and Andrea, Dr. Fry’s customer-care staff, give the best customer experience possible. (Bottom) Heather, Jessica and Mary are all licensed dispensing opticians and aid Dr. Fry’s day-to-day operations.

Picture, if you will, a young female robin that has just become pregnant; she twiddles the day away gathering materials to make her chicks’ nest. Suddenly, she looks up to find another female, of the same size, staring at her. The lady robin assumes an aggressive stance, intent on shooing away the intruder. The intruder, to her surprise and agitation, assumes an equally aggressive stance. What is going on? Well, it turns out that the female robin is actually looking at a glass reflection of herself. Because these birds are more aggressive during the mating months, often the birds will become more and more agitated until finally they leap out to attack the cursed nemesis, only to run smack into the glass. Though this is a humorous misunderstanding, this can often lead to the robin being seriously injured or killed, and chances are it will happen again. A good way of preventing your nice glass windows from being attacked by a rather temperamental robin is simple: just tape a piece of cardboard over the window in question. Though it might not win you “most fashionable in the neighborhood”, it will ensure that no robins harm themselves because of a silly reflection, at least until the summer months when they are less territorial.

Seasonal Culinary Inspirations Written By Deron Little Food Photography By Ben Gibson

Being the Chef of a restaurant that uses seasonal foods to inspire the menu, it is important to understand that making the most of spring’s great produce means letting the flavors speak for themselves. The season’s first harvest after a dormant winter will bring bright fruit flavors from strawberries, blueberries and kiwi. The season’s vegetables to take advantage of will be sugar snap peas, spinach, asparagus and artichokes. You ate them in January, they were flat and bland—passable, but nothing to write home about. Now, you take a bite from one grown half a mile away and in season, and it is spectacular—sweet, juicy and flavorful. In this particular instance, we are talking about strawberries, but we could say the

same thing about a dozen produce items you might find at your local farmer’s market now. ‘Tis the season to eat fresh, as the tender new growth of spring ripens. So why settle for “so-so” when you can savor the sensational? Consider the benefits of eating foods at the peak of their season. Seasonal foods serve up the most flavor and pack the biggest nutritional punch, not to mention they’ll boost your budget, and these foods are tied to the special days and seasons of our lives: sweet young vegetables that accompany spring’s first warm day. As consumers today, we are very lucky in some respects. We have the ability to enjoy the seasonal rhythm of life by purchasing locally-grown seasonal foods. The following is one of my favorite chutneys to serve over chicken, fresh seafood or roasted pork loin. Food can be a spiritual experience. I want to encourage you to enjoy the fellowship with your friends and family this spring and this season of your life.

Strawberry Chutney Ingredients: 1 cup 1/4 cup 1/2 cup 1/2 cup 2 tbs

fresh sliced strawberries finely diced red onion red wine vinegar sugar clarified butter

Directions: In a sauté pan, place the clarified butter and the finely diced red onion. Over high heat, sautee the onion until it is translucent. Deglaze with red wine vinegar, add sugar and reduce over medium heat until syrup is made. Place the sliced strawberries in a metal bowl, and pour the hot syrup over the fresh fruit, allowing them to marinate in the syrup. Serve at room temperature.

of Finch’s most breathtaking weddings was actually shot indoors at the Tennessee Theatre. WBIR Channel 10 news anchor and McMinn County native, Beth Haynes, was married to Seth Grossman at the beautifully renovated theater. Ben Finch says, “It was a beautiful wedding. Dr. Bill Snyder played the great Wurlitzer, and Russell Biven announced them to the congregation and did a scripture reading.” Every shot from the wedding captured the stunning beauty of the day. From the wedding preparations to the ceremony and reception, every intricate detail was represented throughout the photography.

Finch was also able to scope out a perfectly lit alley across from the Tennessee Theatre for a few outdoor shots. As a photographer, Finch takes great inspiration from the JFK era. His personal style reflects timeless, classic and nostalgic beauty. “Twenty-five years down the road, I want my photos to be as relevant then as they are now. I try to focus on things that inspire me most.” Viewers truly feel as if they have stepped into a real life fairytale with every detail perfectly in place. Sweet Soles

Contributes to the Revitalization of Main Street America Sweet Soles, a women’s shoe boutique, opened in September in Sweetwater. It was the work of many creative hands according to the owner, Mary Miller. Just six short months ago, Mary met Amy Bray, an entrepreneur in the shoe industry. Interested in opening another independent shoe boutique in a small, Main Street town, Mary asked Amy to be on the lookout for a charming spot with a fabulous women’s boutique nearby, small, lovely eateries, a few good antiques stores and lovely tree-lined streets...then, they laughed and agreed that this vision no longer exists...or does it? A few weeks later, on a business trip, Amy met Brenda Bryan, owner of The Lily Pad, a landmark destination for women’s apparel. After a wonderful afternoon of chatting and shopping, Brenda took Amy next door to reveal a beautiful 19th-century space with an exposed brick wall that had once, long ago, been a thriving mercantile...and the rest, dear reader, is history. With phone calls flying, a charming shoe store was born right next door to a very unique and quite famous ladies’ boutique, right in the heart of a small town with tree-lined streets, antiques stores, an authentic hardware store and several delightful eateries.

Handmade shoes and jewelry, home decor and handbags are just a few of the treasures you will find when you shop at Sweet Soles. Renee joined Mary and created the overall vision for the store with custom platforms and lovely pieces of furniture that were handcrafted specifically for the space. They used wire spools, tobacco boxes and other local items that give a nod to the past and present success of the town of Sweetwater.

Mary and her husband, Dave, moved to Sweetwater, lock, stock and barrel and worked with Renee Fisher on the interior

comfort features and an emphasis on style. You will see brands that will surprise you. You will also find beautiful handbags,

“Open for readings and small private functions, Sweet Soles is the perfect location for that special event that includes after-hours shopping!” of Sweet Soles. Renee is not only the key figure in creating the look of the store, she designed and built, with her family, the cabinetry and logo elements – the beginnings of a family business. In fact, the furnishing and decor are also her concept and part of the lifestyle intention of Sweet Soles. Look for art by Fisher when you come to visit Sweet Soles to see hand-designed necklaces featuring antique keys and African trade beads, among other creations. More than your typical shoe store, Sweet Soles offers unique shoes and boots with

beauty bits, home decor and menswear. Most of the accessories come from small vendors who produce their wares in the Southeast. “We like to know who we work with,” says Mary, “and be able to pick up the phone and talk to another owner of a small company.” The trend to return to family-run businesses and living local in every sense of the word is not a dream but a dream come true. Include Sweet Soles as part of your shopping trip to Sweetwater. You will not be disappointed! 211 North Main Street, Sweetwater, TN 423-371-4042 www.sweetlifeonmainstreet.com

A Journey To The Lost Sea The 50th Anniversary Celebration Written By Phil Roulier

T

he Lost Sea has been and continues to be one of the most awe-inspiring attractions in East Tennessee as America’s largest underground lake. As the journey begins down into the dark cave systems one cannot help but be overwhelmed by the sense of wonder and mystery that grips the heart and brings on a sense of true adventure. Once inside, the exceptionally knowledgeable guide will take you through the cave system. You will stop along the way to relish in some of the fascinating history of the caves, such as the Civil War soldiers whose names are burned into the very rock itself, experience total darkness and explore the old moonshine stills that remain from the early 1900s. Finally, after a short walk, the true majesty of the lake becomes visible. As you gather into the boat, the eerie mystery of the immense four-and-a-half-acre underground

lake, lit up only by faint electric light, begins to set a mood of sheer apprehension. As the boat glides silently from the dock, dark shapes surround you, though they are not clearly visible at first. These are the rainbow trout that dwell deep in this underground ecosystem, almost completely blind due to lack of light. As the journey continues, the immensity of the lake becomes apparent, and all the while the fish float slowly by, waiting for any morsels that the guides might throw them. Deeper and deeper you go, and what happens next? Well that, my friends, is for you to discover. When exiting the caves and basking in the reunion of sunlight, the adventure goes on! The Lost Sea Village, located right across from the exit and entrance of the caves, is a complete replica of an early East Tennessee settlement village. Old-world

CARRY THE FLAME ACROSS AMERICA Written By Jack Alman | Photography By Garry F. Freese

I

t was Memorial Day weekend in May of 2002 when the flame was first lit and carried by our American Gold Star Mothers, American Gold Star Wives and the Blue Star Mothers of America to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC. The Wall honors those fallen heroes who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service of their country. This first ceremonial torch was borrowed from the Special Olympics by King Cavalier II, a Rolling Thunder 速 Inc. member. This was in conjunction with the candlelight vigil that is held at the Wall each Memorial Day weekend and continues to this day. In 2003, the first cross country tour took place when Rolling Thunder 速 Inc. riders

from several different chapters across the country left San Bernardino, CA, to carry the torch to the Navajo/Hopi reservation home of Lori Piestewa. This was to honor her as The Lady Warrior, the first active duty female soldier lost in combat and the first American Native female lost in service as a captive as a prisoner of war. The torch was then carried to Washington, DC, to be presented at the Wall during the candlelight vigil usually held on the Friday night prior to Memorial Day and is now known as Carry the Flame Across America. On Memorial

Day weekend in 2009, the torch tour was accompanied by Marine SSGT Tim Chambers from Tulsa, Oklahoma. For the past several years, he stands near the beginning of the Ride to the Wall, in Marine military full dress uniform, to hold a military hand salute to honor those hundreds of thousands of motorcycle riders from all corners of the country that gather on Memorial Day weekend. They ride through the streets of Washington, DC, in an effort to remind the public that there are still over 89,000 unaccounted for veterans lost as missing in action (MIAs) or, as

some believe, still held as prisoners of war (POWs). The tour of the torch is carried through 10 states and stops at 15 cities and towns on its way to Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. Friday night, crowds of thousands will stand in the dark of the evening hours in silence holding small light sticks as the torch is carried by executives of Rolling Thunder 速 Inc.,

National and escorted by Gold Star and Blue Star families where it then proceeds to each of the war memorials that honor our American Heroes. The torch will be presented at various destinations across the country, stopping in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Tuesday, May 19th at 6:30pm. The public is invited to witness this solemn ceremony held at the Harley Davidson Knoxville West retail outlet on Lovell Road. The names

of the fallen heroes from East Tennessee will be read aloud by members of Rolling Thunder 速 Inc., Chapter 3. Harley Davidson Knoxville has become a valued major host and sponsor on this stop of the tour for the past several years. Thane Johnson, General Manager of the Harley Davidson retail stores located on Lovell Road just north of Interstate 40 and the Harley Davidson Store located on Clinton Hwy just north of the Merchants Road interchange, continues to support Rolling Thunder 速 Inc. and its own commitment to our military heroes, both past and present, with special attention to our Gold Star and Blue Star families. Additional information can be found at the Carry The Flame, Inc., website and the Harley Davidson of Knoxville website.

It is one of the most difficult aspects of life, to part with a loved one. Often it is a process that takes time, and our goodbyes are slow and painful. Often it is sudden, giving us a shock of grief that seems almost surreal, leaving us wishing but for only one more precious moment. Whatever the case may be, letting go is never easy, but thanks to Click Funeral Homes, setting arrangments for your loved one is. Click Funeral Homes is like no other in the industry; here, the dedicated staff strive to bring compassionate consultation and flexible options to the family.

Founders of Click Funeral Homes, Glenn and Polly Click

The Click Funeral Home was built on a simple idea: our family serving your family. The Click family legacy began in 1965 when Glenn and Polly Click decided to open up a funeral home in the downtown Knoxville area. Glenn Click had been in the business all his life, so he and his wife decided to dedicate themselves to aiding other folks in the community with not only their funeral arrangements, but with the grieving process as well. Now, Glenn and Polly didn’t start out with a lot, and they sure didn’t know much about advertising, but they did know one thing, and that was how to serve others. For years, they went door to door telling people about their new business and how grateful they would be to make them a part of the Click family. Their dedication to the community paid off, and they had enormous success. Needless to say, Glenn and Polly’s children were raised in the business and took over the running of things for a new generation built on the same moral and practical principles set down by Glenn and Polly. Today, Click Funeral Home is still owned by Glenn’s son, Larry Click, and still provides wonderful service to an even broader area, now bringing locations to Lenoir City, Tellico Village, Loudon and Farragut.

At Click Funeral Homes, you are treated like family. The folks here take care of every detail of your loved one’s service and give you the options you need to give them the servicethat best exemplifies them. A thoughtful and respectful staff meets you at the door right when you walk in, putting you and your loved one’s wishes as their top priority and making the most difficult of times seem a little less overwhelming. Burials, open casket viewing, cremation, graveside services and so many more– no matter what the wishes of the deceased or family members are, Click Funeral Homes is there to accomodate. They even have a new “Green Burial” option, for those who wish to be buried in a more eco-friendly manner. All of these options can be viewed on Click’s website, www.clickfh.com. Here, you can also view obituaries and see many of their beautiful facilities, including both chapels and multiple viewing areas. The website even has a grief support link, Click’s way of making sure that even after the funeral is over, their service continues. These many values coupled with Click’s affordable nature put them amongst the top funeral homes in East Tennessee.

Having had enormous success for their dedicated service, Click Funeral Homes has recently purchased some top-of-the-line facilities in order to broaden the available options for the family’s grieving process. Their chapels, both simple and elegant, create a beautiful setting for loved ones to be viewed and respected. For those more inclined to a less formal, casual setting to celebrate a loved one’s life, Click’s Milestone Event Center is a wonderful option. This facility, located just off Kingston Pike in Farragut, was designed in order to give the family a customizable setting. Catering options, celebration of life themed decorum and any other personal touch that the family wishes to surround themselves with are highly encouraged. Whether a family wants to bring a home-cooked meal or order in from their favorite restaurant, the Milestone Event Center is more than accommodating. Even though losing a loved one can seem unbearable, the folks at Click Funeral Home’s dedication to respect, compassion and adherence to the family’s wishes help shoulder the burden and bring families together to honor those who have loved and those who have been loved. And in a world that seems so very superficial, it’s nice to know that there are still folks out there that genuinely care. Contact them at their Farragut location at (865) 671-6100 or email them with any questions at info@clickfh.com.
