THE BEST YOU

A Better World Welcome to the latest issue of The Best You magazine. We bring you exciting news about The Best You Expo 2019 (thebestyouexpo.com), our brand new Legacy Club, and our online platform. These are exciting times in the world of personal development. Our politics might be dominated by division and confusion, but our drive to enrich the lives of others has never been greater, and we know you feel the same. We are living in at time of great uncertainty as Britain’s official moment of departure from the European Union fast approaches. Society is more fragmented than ever, as economic, social and political changes push and pull us apart. In this issue we will also look at some inspirational stories that transcend borders. We believe that education and personal development lead to empowerment, and that everyone deserves access to the tools that can transform their lives and make the world a better place. For that reason, Meghan Markle is our perfect cover star. The Duchess of Sussex understands the universal importance of the need to connect and nurture, to help those less fortunate and lift each other up. Until next time!

me happy Tickled pink. Got the blues. Green with envy. Shrinking violet. Seeing red. Colour is everywhere, we see it, eat it, wear it, paint out homes in it - but do we know how to harness its powerful vibration to support us in our daily lives? That’s where ‘colour therapy’ comes in. As Founder of The Colour Ministry Alison Standish is an expert in combining the ancient wisdom of colour therapy along with modern day technological developments to create a unique range of treatments, workshops and certified courses, all geared around helping people live happier lives.

Colour permeates every aspect of our lives, but did you that certain hues can improve health and wellbeing?

You might have a favourite colour, or feel drawn to a particular shade, but have you ever stopped to think about what could be behind this? Standish and her team offer practical and technical information to help you to get to know the psychological and healing effects of how to introduce colour into our everyday world. Through a ‘colour reading’ you can uncover your personal colours, as well as discovering how you and your colours interact with your significant other’s. Just as we reached for coloured crayons as children, giving us the freedom to create, colour still offers the opportunity for creative expression and enables us to escape and fantasise. By understanding your own unique colours you can unlock understanding about yourself and your connections with family and friends, why some get on and others may find it a little more challenging. To repurpose a famous saying, embrace the rainbow – but understand it too. For more information visit thecolourministry.co.uk

A HISTORY OF COLOUR DEEP PURPLE

The colour purple was worn by emperors and heads of churches. The Byzantine Empress Theodora is often depicted wearing a purple robe, the dye a Tyrian purple made painstakingly from the secretions of Murex snails.

MILLENNIAL PINK

Employed by a switched-on, smart generation who are aware of how pink has become a colour that is no longer meant for women only, but can be worn by men, too.

BACK TO BLACK

A classic, flattering and multifaceted colour that is enduringly popular with the fashion set, it manages to be both mysterious and self-important, anonymous and attention-drawing.

The power of saying

'enough'

Experts say the endless pursuit of perfection is having a negative impact on our wellbeing. Perhaps the secret is to enjoy where you are right now, without the need strive for more It starts during a bit of late night Instagramming of Copenhagen apartments. First you’re scrolling through trailing houseplants, then screengrabbing Morroccan Berber rugs, and before you know it its 2am and you’re staring at photos of a stranger’s Italian wedding, making a list of things you need to make you life perfect. Whether it’s chasing a promotion, buying our own flat, boosting our Instagram following, or finding the partner of our dreams, our goal-driven culture means chasing ‘perfect’ has become the norm. Psychologist Dr Becky Spelman says that this quest for perfection isn't just in our heads, it's also pervasive throughout our culture. “Today's competitive world has led to us developing perfectionist traits,” she says. “It starts in school where you are rewarded for pushing yourself to meet targets. “While it is healthy to have focus, you can put yourself under enormous pressure trying to attain unrealistic goals, whether that’s at work or in realtionships. This can become obsessive and unhealthy because you are concentrating not on something you have, but on a deficit.” Endlessly striving for more means we can never feel satisfied, and our ‘dream life’ remains frustratingly – and permanently out of reach. A study in the Journal of Occupational and Organisational Psychology found that women are more likely than men to experience feelings of inadequacy, and a larger proportion felt they failed to meet their own high standards. According to Dr Spelman, feelings of inadequacy are intensified by the 'compare and despair’ bred on social media. We are a generation who sees too much, with research showing we are exposed to more

images of supposedly ‘perfect’ women in one day than our grandmothers saw in a lifetime. Charlotte, 30, says that’s a part of the pressure she feels to improve her life: “It feels like everyone on Instagram is more attractive than I am, better dressed, having more fun, and getting more promotions. I don’t know why I follow some of the people I do. It’s as if I like tormenting myself.” Rationally we know that influencers are manufactured and monetised, yet Dr Spelman says that in our 360-degree feedback loop it’s difficult not to measure yourself against them. “It’s easy to lose your balance and feel sad about not having their seemingly perfect life. But desperately trying to ‘keep up’ can come at the expense of your mental health”. There is widespread agreement among experts that perfectionism is harmful, and studies have linked it to the rise in anxiety, depression, anxiety, drug addiction and even an increased suicide risk. After British snowboarder Ellie Soutter killed herself on her 18th birthday last month, her dad Tony said the pressure she felt and fear of “not letting anybody down” contributed to her death.

But how can you step away from the pressure to be perfect? Ten years ago it was enough to get yourself to work wearing halfclean clothes. Now every aspect of our lives is public, with social media allowing us to measure ‘success’ through views and likes in ways never previously possible. In response, the growing anti-perfectionism trend is helping to re-frame the way we look at perceived ‘failures’. Recent bestsellers The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson and Sarah Knight’s You Do You: A No-F**ks-Given Guide promote wearing our imperfections on our sleeves, as well as having the freedom to consider alternatives

to what we had planned.

Katherine Ormerod is a former fashion journalist who says she “spent years putting on a great show that my life was pretty perfect, and it was exhausting. Then my husband left me when I was 29 and I couldn’t fake it anymore. “All of my plans fell down like dominoes. But once you come out the other side of something like that you realise that amazing things can come from failure or from going off your planned course.” In Ormerod’s forthcoming book Why Social Media Is Ruining Your Life she speaks to influencers who reveal what their lives are really like away from the glossy hair and #AD bikini endorsements. “Often people don’t want to admit any weakness or vulnerability, but of course they struggle with the same things we all do,” says Omerod. “Life isn’t all beaches, parties and designer handbags.” Dr David Hamilton agrees that we live in a culture that glorifies success, and says the antidote to endless comparison is to look for positive, inspirational people to follow. “We think ‘when I make my flat look perfect or get that perfect boyfriend then I’ll finally feel that I am ‘enough’”, he says. “It’s vital to stop viewing yourself as ‘less than’. Wherever you are now is good enough, without any need for a new path taking you somewhere ‘better’”. In the 1950s the British psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott coined the phrase ‘good-enough mother’ to try to relieve the pressure mums felt to be perfect, and there is growing agreement that this ‘good enough’ concept might be the key to

shaping a new way for us to live happy lives. The central message of Haemin Sunim’s upcoming book Love for Imperfect Things: How to Accept Yourself in a World Striving for Perfection is accepting yourself instead of constantly needing to prove your worth or ability. Last year you couldn’t move for books about lagom - the Swedish concept of ‘enough’ - now we’re looking east to the Japanese art of finding long lasting contentment. Erin Longhurst is the author Japonisme which explores finding fulfilment in appreciating life’s quieter moments rather than getting distracted by what you don’t have. “Perfection is an unattainable and unkind goal,” says Longhurst. “Instead, in Japan the focus is on finding your ikigai, or purpose. This is what makes you happy, and it’s different for everyone - for some its family, for others its being creative. It’s not about how much money you make, or what status you are trying to attain, but what you value. Being able to find that clarity and purpose is empowering.”

Of course, we all have hopes and plans for the future, so it’s not about digging up the yellow brick road completely but making sure you step off it to enjoy what you already have. Dr Spelman says the secret is to be realistic, self-aware, and flexible - in case life unexpectedly takes you on a different path. “There are so many things we have no control over,” she says. “Be kind to yourself and try to focus on the process rather than the end goal. That way you set yourself up for the best chance of happiness. Perfectionists can never be good enough and are doomed to fail, so stop pursuing and start being.” Omerod is hopeful that the antiperfectionism movement is enacting change and helping people feel happier. “I do think things are changing,” she says. “Now perfectionism on social media makes you roll your eyes, you feel sorry for that person and all the effort they have to put in to keep up pretence.

“You have to steel yourself to admit things go wrong and to follow a different path to the one you’d planned, but its hugely liberating. If I was still putting on my fake social media show there’s no way I’d be as happy as I am now. Failure is part of success, and a happiness might actually look very different from what you presumed it would.” Dr. Becky Spelman theprivatetherapyclinic.co.uk Why Social Media Is Ruining Your Life by Katherine Omerod

Meghan Markle The latest addition to the Royal family is a remarkable testament to how the world is changing for the better

Much has been written about Meghan Markle's Royal story; how an ardently feminist mixed race actress joined one of the most conservative and traditional families in the world. Less well-known is the strong streak of selflessness and concern for the lives of others that has been part of her from the very beginning. Social justice is perhaps in the Duchess of Surrey's DNA. When she was born in August 1981, Markle's African-Amerian mother, Doria Ragland, was a social worker and yoga in-structor in Los Angeles, California. Her father, Thomas Markle was a Caucasian television director of photography and lighting. After the pair separated when their daughter was just two, she spent weekends with her dad and weekdays with her mum In many ways, her parentage is embodied in Markle's unique approach to the world - a strong sense of social justice combined with media savvy. When she was an 11-year-old schoolgirl at the Little Rooster Schoolhouse, she was so disgusted by the sexist reaction of boys in her class to the following

soap advert tagline: "Women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans", that she decided to act. She wrote to manufacturers Procter and Gamble, Hillary Clinton, Nickelodeon News and a leading women's rights lawyer to complain. She appeared on television reports making her case, and Procter and Gamble changed the ad's tagline. Markle reflected later: "...I realised the magnitude of my actions. At the age of 11, I had created my small level of impact by standing up for equality." No surprise that Markle strongly dentifies as a feminist, but her care for others' rights goes beyond it, too. Her High School, the Immaculate Heart Catholic Girls School in Los Angeles contributed to her sense of doing service for others and a strong moral core. Whilst there, she sided with the underdog and was stood up for those being bullied - an instinct that may have come from her own sense of not fitting in. She recalls she found a way to transcend race considerations. "My high school had cliques: the black girls and white girls, the Filipino and the Latina girls. Being bi-racial, I fell

somewhere in between. So every day during lunch, I busied myself with meetings - French club, student body, whatever one could possible to between noon and 1pm - I was there. Not so that I was more involved, but so that I wouldn't have to be alone." This, in turn, led her to self-identification that "was wrapped up with being the smart one." Aged 13, Markle had her first experience of the dark underbelly of Los Angeles. Skid Row is a shifting area of encampments that offers a makeshift home to around 2,000 of the city's 57,000 homeless. Here, among many other charity organisations, the Catholic Worker Community runs the Hospitality Kitchen, or the "Hippie Kitchen", which feeds and provides for some of the homeless. With her social worker mother's encouragement, Markle's first encounter with the area was, she admits, "overwhelming". But three years later, after she had matured and heard a teacher at school advise that life is about

"putting the needs of others above your own", she committed to helping there. She regularly served the poor, listened to their stories and connected. The experience clearly stayed with her. When she later enjoyed success in the hit TV series Suits she arranged for left-over food from the set to be delivered to homeless charities nearby, and actively volunteered for the soup kitchens in Toronto. Her interest in wider issues led her to major in two seemingly contrasting subjects at Northwestern University: theatre and international relations. She interned for six weeks with the U.S embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina as a junior press officer, experiencing first-hand frustration with US foreign policy when the cavalcade she was travelling in ran into a hostile crowd during the visit of US Finance Secretary Paul O'Neill in 2002. Markle went on to face challenges as she struggled for years to make a name for herself in the world of showbusiness. People started to take notice of her as Rachel Zane in Suits, a character renowned for her poise, style and intelligence. On the back of her growing ce-lebrity, Markle launched her own website, The Tig, in which she celebrated her love of style, travel, good food and wine - and discussed equality and human rights issues. Thanks to The Tig, she was approached by the UN to act as an advocate for their new gender equality program, HeForShe. Her advocacy for women continued with the UN when she became a UN Women's Advocate for Women's Political Participation and Lead-ership, travelling to Africa to meet female parliamentarian leaders in Kigali.

organisation that brings together young leaders to create solutions for world issues, travelling worldwide in this role. Markle is also a Global Ambassador for the charity World Vision, visiting Rwanda on a clean water campaign aimed at enabling young children to continue in education. And with women's rights always at the forefront of her mind, she also travelled to Mumbai in India to witness the work of the Myna Mahila Foundation, which empowers women through access to menstrual hygiene products and work opportunities. She has been a powerful voice for women's rights, writing a Time magazine op-ed on the stigmatisation of menstruation and its effect on women's education in many parts of the world. Over the years, Markle has found a way to combine the apparently opposing elements in her life to create a very strong and unique brand. Describing her heritage in a 2015 essay for Elle, Markle states that her "dad is Caucasian and my mom is African American. I'm half black and half white ... While my mixed heritage may have created a grey area sur-rounding my self identification, keeping me with a foot on both sides of the fence, I have come to embrace that. To say who I am, to share where I'm from, to voice my pride in be-ing a strong, confident mixed race woman." Her sensitivity, intelligence and understanding of contradictions throughout her life make her singularly well poised for the royal role she now fulfils.

Her instinct to become involved grew with the years, and she took on several other charitable roles. She has been a counsellor for the One Young World charity, an

A PASSION TO DO GOOD After announcing her engagement to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle spoke of her delight at being able to focus on causes that are very important to her, and the world is waiting to hear exactly what those causes will be. She is a longstanding Counsellor for charity One Young World, which gathers young leaders from around the world and advocates for women's healthcare worldwide. Part of that work saw her write an article for TIME called How Periods Affect Potential about the way menstruation can hinder a woman's potential, so many have suggested Markle’s work might continue this strong focus on gender equali-ty and the advancement of girls.

n recent years, the simple act of gratitude - being thankful for what you have - has increasingly been hailed as one of the most universally happiness enhancers. It has been heavily researched and validated beyond the realm of self-help.

But even if we can see that it is an effective mindset booster, that still leaves us with a question; how do we build gratitude? How do we break out of the doom-and-gloom cocoon and see more of what’s right in life? One of the most popular gratitude-building exercises is the gratitude journal. The idea is to regularly write down what you’re grateful for. There are many variations, but in Martin Seligman’s book Flourish: A Visionary New Understanding of Happiness and Wellbeing, he offers a research-backed approach, which he calls the Three Blessings. The ‘blessings’ are actually fun to do, and they don’t take much time. A quick note on how often to do them. Seligman suggests a daily approach, but Sonja Lyubomirsky, another leading voice in positive psychology, believes that instead of doing them daily, you should test what feels right for you. In her book The How of Happiness: A New Approach to Getting the Life You Want, she suggests that a daily practice may start to feel forced and repetitive. In Lyubomirsky’s research, once a week seemed to be the sweet spot for most people. So play with it. If it starts to feel like a rote or repetitive exercise and doesn’t seem to be doing anything to lift your mood or change your view of life, spread it out a bit. The second gratitude builder - ‘the gratitude visit’ - is talked about far less often but has been shown in Seligman’s research to pretty much crush almost every other happiness-boosting exer-cise.

HOW DO WE BREAK OUT OF THE DOOM-AND-GLOOM COCOON AND SEE MORE OF WHAT’S RIGHT IN LIFE? DAILY EXPLORATION OPTION 1: THE THREE BLESSINGS • Write down three things that went well today. They can be big things (“I proposed to the love of my life and she said yes”), or simple everyday things (‘my daughter gave me a hug and kiss before leaving for school’). • For each of the three things, answer the question ‘Why did this happen?’ Make tonight your first night. Keep track of how your lens on life and general mood change over time. And, as Lyubomirsky suggests, experiment a bit to find the perfect frequency for you. Start out daily for a week. If that feels good and it’s moving your mindset needle, keep it up. If not, explore once a week, twice a month, or whatever feels right for you. OPTION 2—THE GRATITUDE VISIT • This will take a bit more work, but Seligman’s research showed that a single experience can create changes in mindset that are still there a month later. Look back on your life and think of someone who made a difference to you. It could have been someone who helped you out when you were in need, someone who encouraged you or taught you something. It should be someone you never thanked, and someone who is close enough for you to visit in person. • Next, write a letter to that person describing, in specifics, what they did for you and how it affected you. Share what you’re up to now and let them know how often you revisit their kindness. It should be a full page, or about 300 words. • Now here’s where it gets fun, and also where it might challenge you a bit. Do it anyway. Call the person up and tell them you’d love to stop by to say a quick hello. Don’t tell them exactly why you’re coming. You want to keep it a surprise, if you can. Then go visit your person and read your letter to them, face-to-face. When you return home, spend a few minutes journaling about how the experience went and how it made you feel. Sole searching Get happy feet thanks to the medical pedicure, by Kate Wills

the dentist. ‘Medicures’ are performed on dry feet, and while it may not seem as relaxing as a traditional pedi, Nico immediately puts me at ease by telling me my feet look good as he checks them carefully. “I’m looking at the nails and between the toes, assessing the condition of the skin,” he says. “Often problems with the feet can be an early-warning sign of many health issues, such as diabetes.”

The salon pedicure is as much a part of the preholiday ritual as a new bikini. But the growing shift towards more holistic beauty treatments means that medical pedicures, which address the real problems with your feet - rather than just covering them up with pretty polish, are growing in demand. More than just a quick buff and shape, the medical pedicure involves a trained podiatrist getting to the root of your foot issues, whether it’s cracked heels, calluses or corns. The Margaret Dabbs clinic in Marylebone specialises in medical pedicures and my podiatrist Nico takes me into a private room. There’s no bubbling foot spa or magazines to flick through, just a reclining chair like at

Nico removes my chipped ancient pink polish, and explains to me that most nail polishes can be very drying, and shouldn’t be left on longer than two weeks. He then gets to work removing my dry skin with a scalpel, buffing and shaping my nails, and rehydrating my skin with Margaret Dabbs signature products which all contain emu oil - known for its anti-ageing, antiinflammatory, antibacterial properties. After 45 minutes my feet look super-healthy, feel baby-bottom smooth and even putting my shoes on seems different. It’s transformative in a way a standard salon pedi could never hope to be - and the results last much longer. The medical pedicure is officially good for the sole. The Medical Pedicure is available in Margaret Dabbs London Clinics nationwide. Margaretdabbs.co.uk

HEART BERRIES

by Terese Marie Mailhot Raw, emotional and profoundly powerful, Heart Berries tells the story of how Native Canadian Mailhot, after surviving a traumatic childhood with an abusive alcoholic father, finds herself hospi-talised with PTSD and bipolar II disorder, and only a notebook. “Writing was cathartic. I didn't see books from women like me growing up, and it distorted my view of what was possible. I had to write this book, and writing it asserted who I was and how I wanted to be seen,” says Mailhot. “There is a sea of posturing out there, where everyone wants to position themselves as insightful or morally righteous,” she says. “Exploring that allowed me to let go of the things I was most ashamed of.”

Rules to live by from one of the most successful investors in the world Save money where you can. Keep track of your expenses. Don’t hurry to buy things you can live without. It’s not groundbreaking advice, but when its coming from Warren Buffett you know it pays to listen. Buffet is the world’s second richest person and one of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs, a source of inspiration for entrepreneurs and venture capitalist everywhere. With a net worth of more than £85 billion, Buffett still rides the same gold Cadillac to work every day, eats the same meal, and takes every opportunity to offer his wisdom to others. He is also a notable philanthropist, having pledged to give away 99 percent of his fortune to charitable causes. In a world that values instant gratification, Buffett is proof that everything is achievable in life as long as you are persistent, keep the right company and keep up your good work. Here are some of his greatest words of inspiration. Ultimately, Buffet would implore you to remember that life is short and we should all spend our time and effort on work we love. Here are some of his wisest words: Price is what you pay. Value is what you get. It's better to hang out with people better than you. Pick out associates whose behaviour is better than yours and you'll drift in that direction.

Someone's sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago. We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful. The only way to get love is to be lovable. It's very irritating if you have a lot of money. You'd like to think you could write a check: 'I'll buy a million dollars' worth of love.' But it doesn't work that way. The more you give love away, the more you get. Risk is a part of God's game, alike for men and nations.

"LIFE IS SHORT AND WE SHOULD ALL SPEND OUR TIME AND EFFORT ON WORK WE LOVE"

LEARN MINDFUL DRINKING Aiming to drink less alcohol over the festive period? Hilary Marsh shares six simple ways to cut back on booze From time to time, it’s a good idea to stop and take stock of habits that might have crept in unnoticed; to consider our lifestyle and think about ways to improve it. Whether its eating clean, going to the gym, praising mindfulness or drinking more water, we can all make little changes that make.a difference.

At this time of year, one of the biggest ways to look after your wellbeing in the winter months is to watch your alcohol intake. There are many benefits of drinking less; better physical health, improved mental health, increased energy - not to mention saving money. All it takes is some small changes, and you too can join the growing ranks of mindful drinkers.

PLANNING:

It’s a good idea to think ahead and plan how much you are going to drink on a night out and sticking to it. Consider how much you are going to drink in the next week, and be strict with yourself and stick to the amount you’ve allowed. Also plan how much money you want to spend and take out that amount of cash rather than putting everything on your card.

ALTERNATE:

It’s too easy to keep saying yes to booze when you’re on a night out, but by alternating between alcohol and soft drinks you can stay out as late as everyone else without feeling the negative effects. Every other drink opt for a soda and fresh lime, a Botonique or even a mocktail - no one will even have to know you’re hitting pause on the booze.

Catherine Gran’s book The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober explores how quitting the drink altogether can make you happier, healthier, wealthier, slimmer and sexier.

SIZING: Thinking about the size of your drinks is a good way to encourage you to cut back. Rather than getting double shots or a pint, swap it for single measure and half pints. This will mean you can still be part of rounds while lowering your alcohol consumption and your calorie count.

REPLACE:

but if you’re determined to reduce your alcohol consumption, having your friends’ support is crucial. Tell them about your choice to cut back so they don’t buy you another large Pinot. Taking up new hobbies, such as yoga or spinning, to steer clear of your triggers and focus your mind on something other than opening another bottle of wine or going down the pub. It all adds up to you feeling healthier and happier. Cheers!

Eliminating or cutting back on alcohol can sometimes feel like you’re missing out on all the fun, and there’s been a boom in the non-alcoholic drinks market. Beer giants, Heineken and Budweiser have popular alcohol-free versions, there’s a huge range of 0% wines, or try new beverage Botonique which is full of minerals, nutrients and vitamins and makes a great replacement.

TAKE ON A CHALLENGE: This option will take a lot of willpower, but can help to kick start a new lease of life. Dry January and Go Sober for October are two of the biggest “stop drinking” challenges, meaning a whole month of absolutely zero alcohol. Doing it to fundraise for a charity may help you to stick to it, just be careful not to liken it to marathon training…

STEER CLEAR OF TRIGGERS:

BOTONIQUE FOUNDER HILARY MARSH

Avoiding triggers can be extremely difficult for some, as there can be specific places or people that may persuade them to drink. The testing times are when you’re on a night out and want to let loose. Everyone is guilty of going slightly overboard sometimes,

Hilary Marsh is founder of non alcoholic soft drink Botonique. She still loves wine, but after realising the negative effects it has on her body she created Botonique as a great non-alcoholic option to help people ‘pace and replace’ and drink in moderation. For more information on

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey is one of the 500 richest people in the world, but her philanthropic legacy makes her richer still.

50 THE BEST YOU MAGAZINE

Oprah ALL HAIL

Oprah Winfrey gave a definitive "no" when asked if she'd run for President of the USA, but in many people's eyes she is one of the best candidates . The Best You considers the unique force of nature that is the actress, producer, TV star, entrepreneur and philanthropist

This has been yet another milestone year for Oprah Winfrey. At the Golden Globe Awards she received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement and delivered a speech so rousing it led to calls for her to run as President of the United States. Winfrey’s speech drew on her own life experiences and called for a time "when nobody ever has to say, 'me too' again”. Determined to acknowledge life’s all too obvious inequalities, she spoke about race and class and gender, and expressed her "deep admiration for each person who is at long last telling their truth without fear or guilt or shame." It was an inspiring performance from the 64-yearold actress, producer, TV star, entrepreneur and philanthropist, culminating in her saying, “I want everyone to feel that they belong and are worth standing up for," and even added a prophetic touch with her claim that a new day is on the horizon!” Though Winfrey herself has denied this was a weathervane for running for Presidential office, she struck a powerful chord that, with its personal appeal, for many highlighted the corporate cynicism in which modern politics is mired.

Winfrey has a knack for connecting Of course, this is only part of the story. Winfrey is a billionaire just like the Whitehouse's current incumbent. But money isn't the deal-maker that give the idea of Winfrey as leader of the free world its plausibility. Her life experience, her attitude and - of course- her popularity, all tick the right boxes for many voters.

- that hard work and a strong moral compass can take you to the greatest heights. For this, she can thank the stern Christianity of her grandmother and the dedication to education and achievement instilled in her by her father and her stepmother. Not only does she know what's right she also knows how to apply herself to make it happen.

Put simply, Winfrey has a knack for connecting. Starting out as the host of the AM Chicago talk show in 1984, her deft and honest interest in others made the rebranded Oprah Winfrey Show the top US talk show, with massive franchising around the world. What was the secret ingredient? Perhaps that with her loud, likeable, brassy style she was willing to find the positives - to support and uplift people - rather than expose and humiliate, as so many other shows of the time did. What came across was her sincerity, and her warm-heartedness.

Determination and smarts are also present in her business dealings. She owns her own media company, Harpo productions with numerous division, including the publication of her magazine, O, and her own television network - OWN, The Oprah Winfrey Network. Forbes estimates her net worth at $2.8 billion, and faith in her business acumen in the business community was highlighted when she acquired a stake in weight management business Weight Watchers and stepped up as its spokesperson. The company's shares soared more than within two years and the company returned to growth.

Understandably so. Winfrey has lived a life known to millions of Americans at the bottom of the heap. Unlike so many of the presidents of the last century who born into established political dynasties, Winfrey was born poor. Her impoverished beginnings saw her sleeping in the foyer outside her mother's cramped flat, it saw sexual abuse, violence and tragedy in the shape of the loss of her first child when she was just 14 years old. Hard experience enables her to understand the lives of the most downtrodden in US society. This is why just this year she announced at Minnie's Food Pantry's annual star-studded fundraising gala “that nobody should be humiliated because they’re hungry. You shouldn’t have to feel ashamed to say, ‘I just can’t make enough to get food on the table this week.’" She went on. "I've actually been hungry, so I know what that's like, so I know what that means, and I do believe that those of us in the world who have actually experienced what that feels like, it gives you a deeper appreciation for everything you have.". Though she has empathy for the lowest members of US society, she also uniquely embodies the American Dream

52 THE BEST YOU MAGAZINE

Meanwhile, Fortune magazine ranks her at number 27 in its list of World's Greatest Leaders and she is renowned for giving sound business advice to women, including Lucy Kaylin, editor-in-chief of O magazine, who comments: “Her instincts are legendary. She taught me not to overthink or do things - just to check something off your to-do list,” she said. “Oprah is vigilant about knowing when to walk away if it’s not right.” Winfrey, then, is a multi-faceted massively talented individual, with the savvy and life-experience to really understand the problems and challenges of so many in the USA. As well as being the world's first Afro-American female billionaire, she has strong connections with charitable causes and is renowned for her selfless giving. She is a hugely experienced and instinctive communicator, and believes sincerely in the projects she endorses. She's an extraordinary individual. Is it such a flight of fancy to imagine her as US President? Watch this space!

Very often the most practical problem for a doctor and patient is one of location: can people actually get to their doctors, or vice versa? And when they do, how much is the cost of that effort? Germany’s health economy has taken a major step towards solving this problem with "Videosprechstunden" (video consultations). As a part of the new e-health law which came into effect in January this year, the video consultation innovation is just one of many measures set to help more people get the help they need when they need it, thus saving lives. GAMIFYING PHYSIO

MIRA Rehab is a platform which turns physical and cognitive exercises, such as the kind you’d receive from a physiotherapist, into video games, making therapy easier to follow at home. It asks patients to complete the recommended movements to progress through each game level – think Candy Crush but you’re actually recovering as you play. The patient’s performance data is tracked, storing all the repetitions, improvements or issues for therapists to adapt and progress treatment accordingly.

VR PAIN RELIEF

A Swedish pharmacy chain has created the first virtual reality app that can help patients with pain relief. Happy Place, created by agency Wenderfalck as a joint venture between Sweden's largest private pharmacy, Apotek Hjärtat and VR therapy startup Mimerse, aims to distract patients from their pain with a peaceful, interactive environment. Using a VR headset, a patient is 'transported' to a serene lakeside campground, with optional guided relaxation and soothing music. It’s currently being tested by the public (for example, when getting vaccinations), with the potential to be rolled out further. Who said playing video games is bad for you?
