The Local’s List, Volume 10
This same month 10 years ago, the first Local’s List issue was released. That first year, the Local’s List readers’ choice poll consisted of 37 categories, and 16,000 votes were cast from 1,300 people. Ten years later, our tallied totals look a little different: Our category list has grown to 166, and when all was said and done, 249,428 votes were cast from 23,791 participants. Our Google Analytics doesn’t go back that far, but this year, during the nomination and voting rounds, our website saw over 1.3 million pageviews.
It’s quite remarkable how much love and support you’ve all shown The Local’s List over the years. When I see a winner decal on a local shop’s door or the logo on a local restaurant’s menu, it’s hard not to beam with pride, for both the business and The Bend.
Due to a classic case of nostalgia, I revisited that first issue and read what our President Jordan Regas had to say about the contest in its inaugural year. He spoke to the notion that locals know best, and how the list doubles as an all-inclusive set of recommendations for those reading the results. But the crux of his message revolved around the idea that Local’s List would serve as a reminder of those in this community who pour themselves into making the Coastal Bend the dynamic place it is—filled with passionate, hardworking and creative people.
People who understand what it means to not only make up a community, but create one. We aim to shine a light on all things local with every single one of our issues, but this one is different. Its centerpiece comes completely from you, our readers. From beginning to end, it takes six months to produce the celebrated July issue. We start in February with nominations; come April, voting is in full swing; by May we’re working on the individual components to put the issue together; and before the second week of June ends, we’re off to press. But wait; that’s not all. As we announce the winners and begin sharing the issue with readers, our team is putting the final touches on The Local’s List Party. This year it will be held Aug. 1 at the American Bank Center, so mark your calendars!
Though it’s a beast of a project, it’s undoubtedly a labor of love. On behalf of the entire team here at The Bend, I’d like to extend heartfelt congratulations to each business that won its respective category, made it into the top five voting round or was even nominated in the first place. My suspicion tells me small business owners don’t do what they do for the accolades, but to be recognized as the best in your field or industry is a rewarding feeling nonetheless.
While the growth this contest has experienced is phenomenal, some things will just never change. It will always be a poll populated by the readers, for the readers. It will always serve as a reminder that locals really do know best. And more than anything, it will always take us back to the reason The Bend exists in the first place: because of you, your stories, your dreams and your passions. We’re simply along for the ride to spread the good news.
Alright, alright, now let’s get to what you all came here for. Without further ado: The readers have spoken, the votes have been tallied and The Local’s List 2025 winners—along with the second and third place entries, because the more local businesses, the merrier—can be found on page 34. Enjoy!

FINDING STRENGTH & BALANCE
Pilates is one of my favorite forms of exercise, and I am happy to see so many new offerings in the Coastal Bend. From Bayside Pilates’ second location to newly opened studios, if you haven’t tried this type of workout, you’ve got plenty of local options. (Pg. 20)
One of our contributors, Natalie Werkhoven, recommended a tea from Pho 88 several months ago, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since. Naturally, the rest of the Vietnamese restaurant’s menu is just as good. (Pg. 70)
POI: TOYELLE WILSON I am thrilled to see what the Islanders Women’s Basketball team’s new head coach, Toyelle Wilson, brings to the team this season. As a celebrated and decorated athlete and coach, the new chapter she is ushering in will be exciting to watch.

IN CONVERSATION WITH
Toyelle Wilson
TAMU-CC’s new Women’s Basketball coach shares her plan to shape the program and more
By Kylie Cooper Photo by Benjamin Zaragosa
For Toyelle Wilson, the journey to becoming the new head coach of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s (TAMU-CC) Women’s Basketball team wasn’t always about basketball. Her athletic beginnings were rooted in tennis and track, but a suggestion to try hoops, thanks to her speed, sparked a passion that would grow into a lifelong career. From leading on the court as a college athlete to coaching on the sidelines of the NCAA Final Four, Wilson’s path has been marked by curiosity, perseverance and a relentless drive to lead.
Now, with a new chapter unfolding with the Islanders, she brings a bold vision, a commitment to culture-building and a deep belief in the power of transformational leadership.
KC: You’ve had success at nearly every level of collegiate basketball. What drew you to the Islanders program at this point in your career?
TW: Well, I love different challenges, and this school was very intriguing to me. [Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics]
Adrian Rodriguez and crew from the start told me they were about supporting women’s basketball and showed me what that looked like. They love winning, and you can see that with every sport on campus being a champion. It’s beautiful being on an island and near the ocean; you can’t beat that weather. The community is so welcoming, and it felt like family.
KC: How would you describe your coaching philosophy, and how do you plan to implement that here at TAMU-CC?
TW: I’m a players’ coach. I played the game in college and have been coaching it ever since. I know what they go through and understand the process. Now with kids, it’s a relationship, a transformational relationship that matters to get them to believe in your vision.
KC: You’ve developed players who have gone on to the WNBA. What are the key elements you focus on in player development?
TW: Your pace is important, fundamentals, work ethic—understanding the game (basketball IQ) is very important, and you have to produce when it’s game time!
KC: You’ve coached in high-pressure environments like the NCAA Final Four. How do you bring that level of excellence to a new city/team?
TW: Every time I coach, I prepare and act like I’m coaching a game. Laser focus, intensity and attention to detail. I was once told by a coach, “You can’t turn it off and on. It’s either on or off.” So, I always coach with it “on.” How you do anything is how you do everything. I put 100% in and pour everything into my players.
KC: You’ve been described as a culturebuilder and visionary leader. What does building a lasting team culture look like to you?
TW: Alignment, preparation and accountability, commitment and connection. Those things will create a great culture.
KC: How do you plan to build on the team’s existing momentum and make your mark on the program?
TW: I’m excited about these 14 young ladies growing together as one and becoming championship contenders. There will never be another first team like this. It’s not about comparing the old teams here, it’s our new start and new journey.
KC: What excites you most about working with this specific group of student-athletes?
TW: All the young ladies on this team know the commitment and goals we want to accomplish. They all love the game, are committed to the game and the joy we want to bring to the community of Corpus Christi. My coaches are working hard this summer, and we can’t wait to build off that.
KC: As a new Corpus Christi resident, what local spots have you already started to frequent?
TW: I’m a foodie and love to explore, and with having so many recruits in town, I would say I really like Landry’s and Doc’s Seafood.
KC: What’s one message you’d like to send to Islanders fans as you step into this new chapter?
TW: I can’t wait to have you all see this team that we put together. It will be a great brand of basketball, entertaining and exciting. Please come watch practices and come to games—we will not disappoint!

A Night for Non-Profits
A single event plans to raise funds for 15 local organizations, all under one roof
By Leila Ydrogo
Supporting local endeavors and businesses is the heart of any community, and thanks to Non-Profit Night 2025, the Coastal Bend will have the opportunity to return the favor of giving back to 15 local non-profits, all under one roof. The event is dedicated to highlighting these organizations and all the amazing work they do, while allowing locals to learn more about the positive differences they make in the community.
Jennifer Moreno, owner of Mind Your Business Success Agency and coordinator of Non-Profit Night, first began to brainstorm the idea when she took on a non-profit organization as a client.
“I realized they have many of the same struggles business owners have, and I felt like it was a very underserved market,” Moreno shared. “So, I started thinking, ‘How can we impact more organizations at one time?’ That’s how Non-Profit Night started.”
Moreno hosted the first Non-Profit Night in 2024 and was blown away by the response from the community and the success in fundraising. At the end of the evening, all 15 organizations received donations. “I am hoping this year will be even bigger and better,” she said.
To keep the event honest and fair, participating organizations are selected through a lottery system, but must first meet specific eligibility requirements. These include being a registered 501(c)(3); serving the Coastal Bend community; being in operation for five years or less; and not having participated in Non-Profit Night before.
The community can celebrate Non-Profit Night 2025’s selected organizations on July 17 from 6-9 p.m. at the Bay Jewel. Admission to the event is free, although a donation is encouraged at the door.
As Non-Profit Night returns for its second year, it brings an opportunity to connect with the people behind the causes and to understand how far a single act of support can go. With each story shared and each dollar raised, the Coastal Bend grows stronger, one nonprofit at a time.
For more information on Non-Profit Night 2025, visit Mind Your Business Success Agency’s Facebook page.

New and improved Pilates studios offer strength-focused movements for all levels
By Ava Coronado Photo by Justus Photography
The Coastal Bend’s fitness landscape continues to grow, and Pilates is having a moment. Four local studios (some brandnew, some newly expanded or rebranded) are redefining the way locals connect with movement; from “Power Pilates” to personalized one-on-one sessions, each offers something unique.
Bayside Pilates
An early player in the Corpus Christi Pilates scene, Bayside Pilates opened its boutique studio in 2015, with Tori Froemke taking over in 2019. With its new second location in the Water Street Market, there are double the opportunities to take a class. Between the two studios, you’ll find a typical Pilates class with Reformer and mat work; and Power Pilates, which still incorporates Reformer and mat work, but in a more challenging way for a spicier workout. New clients can start with a special package and later upgrade to a membership that best supports their goals. Private solo and duo sessions are available by appointment only.

Three cheers for the red, white and new! Powerful red light therapy, an ediblegrade sunscreen and local health shots round out some seasonal essentials this month.
Red light therapy is my favorite form of regenerative therapy. It is a safe and relaxing way to nourish and heal your body from the inside out. Harvard and MIT have studied the benefits of red light therapy’s mitochondrial healing effects, such as enhanced collagen production, wound and neuropathic pain healing and improvements to circulation. I’m sharing two great local businesses for full-body treatment.

I love local businesses, and I’d love to hear from you! Contact me on Instagram with recommendations for your local health and beauty business or product. I’d love to help spread the Coastal Bend's beauty and wellness bests.
I can recall driving my then-3-year-old twins to a swim lesson when both got sunscreen in their eyes, crying from the burn. At the time, I used what I thought was a safe mineral sunscreen. Sadly, most chemical and many mineral sunscreens contain harmful silicones that irritate the skin and contain highly processed seed oils that produce damaging free radicals. I love this new sunscreen I am sharing, and we have experienced zero burns and nourished skin while using it.

over halfway, at Zona Azul for $30 a session or $250 for 10 sessions. Moore’s has the Prism Light Pod Therapy System, which targets the full body in 15 minutes and offers tailored services with six optimized settings. A 15-minute session is $80, and there are multiple packages and subscriptions, such as eight sessions for $375.

SUNSCREEN, SPF 50 Sky & Sol • skyandsol.co
Sky & Sol has me and my family covered, quite literally, using highquality, pesticide-free, grass-fed and grass-finished tallow that is biocompatible with our skin, along with other nutrient-rich and even edible-grade ingredients. I love how it soaks into my skin, and yet I stay fully protected. It is non-greasy and uses an anti-white cast technology. Rest assured, there is no off-putting smell, thanks to a wet render process that purifies the tallow while preserving essential nutrients and vitamins. Sustainably sourced, with a reef-safe natural formula and created using regenerative agriculture, it is also hypoallergenic with no chemical UV filters, fragrances, preservatives, parabens, gluten or other harmful chemicals.
A flight of health shots at Ridley’s includes a bright yellow Detox Shot, a vibrant orange shot called I Can See Clearly and Just Beet It, a jewel-toned ruby shot. All come with wonderful health benefits and are made from scratch, in what developer Sandra Leal calls a labor of love—one recipe was 10 years in the making.
Detox Shot is a full mouth experience, with warming notes hitting my mouth from back to front and top to bottom. Potent, it also has brightness from the ginger root, honey and cayenne. Obtaining its vibrant orange color from carrots, the I Can See Clearly shot is smooth, fresh and easy to drink. The Just Beet It shot is a perfectly sweet chef’s kiss with its delicious, almost candy-like flavor. At $2.50 a shot, they are an absolute steal and—I’ll go ahead and say it—worth a shot.

How Matthew and Charissa Lynch built their paradise
A Home of Southern Charm
How Matthew and Charissa Lynch built their home
By Elizabeth Welsh, ASID Photos by Jason Page
Rockport has remarkably managed to remain one of the best-kept secrets of the Gulf Coast. From quaint bayfront shops to saltbox bungalows hidden beneath windswept oaks, the town’s history is as rich as it is lengthy. Once known only as a sleepy fishing village, it has maintained its small-town feel and tightknit community.
Just a few sidewalk-free blocks into the heart of the established neighborhood hides a home straight out of a Shelter Magazine, Veranda or Southern Living. An American flag flutters in the gentle breeze through a wild tangle of oak trees surrounding the stately two-story Colonial Revival residence of Matthew and Charissa Lynch, who, over two years and post-pandemic delays, endeavored to build “the house the children would think of as truly home.”
After having lived and worked in other places, Matthew and Charissa were ready to set roots and raise
their growing family in the small town that holds so much meaning to them. “My grandmother used to take us crabbing in Little Bay … My mom’s cousin grew up in the house behind ours,” Matthew reminisced.
Those fond memories ultimately led them to design and build a structure that married the functionality of a busy household with the aesthetics of a well-appointed Southern belle. “We wanted a piece of property that felt like it was in the country but with the convenience of being in the middle of town,” the couple said.
To hone in on their architectural preferences, the couple sourced inspiration from highly reputed modern traditional designers like Dallas-based Caitlin Wilson and C. Brandon Ingram of Atlanta. Especially influential to their process was a trip to tour Southern Living’s Amelia Island Idea House.
Abundant tall windows with transom lites are a key detail extracted from the Idea House experience,
Carefully considered symmetry of the front facade reinforces a harmonious approach through the dappled sunlight of Rockport’s signature oaks.
Entry details like the slate blue front door, convex mirror and under-stair built-in bookcase set the tone for traditional elements throughout the home.
Lynch selected a mix of modern traditional elements like rattan, sealed white oak, marble mosaics and warm brass, and crisp whites with punctuations of powder blue and pastel pink.
The backyard offers a lush resort-like experience, basking on chaises under scalloped canopies with the shimmer of a deep blue pool contrasting against the wild oak backdrop.

emphasizing the home’s 12-foot ceilings and illuminating every interior space with natural light. The Lynches had a keen mindfulness of how light and shadow affect the interior experience: “Light was a priority. I wanted to need a pair of sunglasses in my house,” Charissa said with a wink. A true student of the game, Charissa painstakingly pored over their house plans to visualize how each space would be functional, maintain symmetry and be finished with thoughtful architectural detailing.
The slate blue front door offers a warm welcome while the ample entry foyer doubles as an interior front porch-style sitting area, perfect for a game (or three) of mahjong while escaping the summer heat. The living room and kitchen are central to the home, while side spaces are segmented yet remain open by glass swinging doors and large cased openings which allow for a seamless flow from room to room.
The kitchen notably lacks the ubiquitous appliances, as Charissa opted for the heavy lifting to be done in the
scullery kitchen adjacent to the main cooking space. A pass-through window with double-sided glass upper cabinets allows light to filter through while keeping the main focus of the kitchen on cooking and gathering. Behind the range wall, the most unexpectedly charming pantry is appointed with a floral chintz wall covering, a linen cupboard skirt and scalloped accessories.
Beyond the kitchen lies the true (blue) heart of the home: the laundry room. It’s a space often overlooked, but critical to the smooth operation of a household. The Lynch home is an organizational dream; function at its finest. Each child’s cubby, backpack hook and corresponding laundry bin are streamlined perfection, while the bench seat is a perfect perch for the family’s pups, Jack and Rosemary.
For the Lynch family, building a legacy home in Rockport honors their generational roots, which run as deep as the iconic bent oak trees seen from the coastline.
Overlooking the game table in the entry foyer, a commissioned portrait painted by

NOW GROWING
Blue Plumbago
A gift from the Cape of Good Hope
By Justin Butts
Blue is one of the rarest colors in the garden. Flowers come in many gorgeous hues: red, gold, purple, white and even orange are common. But it is difficult to find a vibrant blue in a South Texas summer garden — and this is what makes the plumbago so special.
Blue plumbago (Plumbago auriculata) is one of the most charming plants in the summer garden. It is a sprawling shrub acting like something between a ground cover and a bush. Blue clusters of flowers grow profusely along branches that wave in the wind. The flowers are somewhat delicate, so protecting this plant from too much wind is important.
Also referred to as cape plumbago, the plant is native to South Africa, where it entered the ancient trading networks from the Cape of Good Hope. These warmweather origins make plumbago a perennial in the Coastal Bend, as opposed to areas of Mexico where it does not freeze, and plumbago can grow to massive dimensions.
Though its leaves typically fall during Coastal Bend winters, the root stock is very hardy. After the first frost, cut the stems back severely to encourage vigorous regrowth. In spring, the plants will quickly return from the roots and main branches, soon leafing out and blooming beautifully. Plumbago blooms best on new growth.
The plant also makes an excellent choice for hanging pots, with branches that cascade downward, showcasing clusters of delicate blue flowers. To enjoy lush growth year-round, bring the plants indoors during winter.
GARDENER'S NOTES
GROWING UP
Spacing, 3’ to 4’. Height, 4’ to 8’. Plumbago is easy to grow and should be planted from transplants in full sun. Too much evening shade can result in slower growth and fewer blooms. It thrives in rich, welldrained soil, so incorporate several inches of organic compost and two cups of pastured poultry manure per plant at the time of planting and again each spring. Water regularly until the plant is established. Mulch with native leaves to retain moisture, and enjoy the added benefits of its salt tolerance, deer resistance and lack of pest problems.
PROFILING
Plumbago does well planted against a wall or fence as a backdrop to a flower bed. The flowers are shaped like phlox and offer a great contrast to actual phlox, which is purple. It also pairs well with scarlet sage white daisies and blue mistflower. Bees are especially attracted to blue flowers, and will visit plumbago all summer.
FUN FACTS
Plumbago is also called leadwort, or “cure for lead.” For centuries, people believed the plant was a cure for lead poisoning based on the writings of Roman historian Pliny the Elder. Pliny thought plumbago was a cure for lead poisoning simply because the blue of the flowers looked like the blue of lead. Pliny also said that plumbago cooked with the feet of a horned owl was a good cure for snakebite, so use his remedies at your own risk.

Hot Days, Hotter Flavors
Keep your summer bold, vibrant and full of flavor with the power of peppers
By Kayla Butts MS, RDN, LD Photos by Jason Page
Summer is the perfect season to cook with fresh, vibrant peppers. From sweet bell peppers to spicy jalapeños, they add bold flavor and color to any dish. Elevate grilled vegetables or tacos with chili garlic oil—a simple infusion of dried chilies, garlic and oil that brings smoky heat. For a creamy, cooling contrast, try poblano crema by blending roasted poblanos with sour cream or Greek yogurt, lime juice and a touch of garlic. These two sauces complement grilled meats, summer salads and all kinds of dishes in between, making peppers a versatile star ingredient for flavorful, seasonal cooking.
RECIPE
Chili Garlic Oil
PREP TIME: 5 minutes
COOK TIME: 10 minutes
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup avocado oil
4 tsp garlic, minced
1 tbsp onion flakes
1 tbsp red pepper flakes
1/4 tsp salt
DIRECTIONS:
Heat oil over medium heat in a small saute pan. Cook the garlic for 5-7 minutes, until golden and fragrant.
Remove the pan from heat and let sit an additional 3 minutes to continue cooking.
Stir in the remaining ingredients. Store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to two weeks.
RECIPE
Poblano Crema
PREP TIME: 15 minutes
COOK TIME: 10 minutes
INGREDIENTS:
3 poblano peppers, halved, with stems and seeds removed 2/3 cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt
1/2 cup cilantro, loosely packed
2 cloves garlic, minced 1 lime, zested and juiced 1/4 tsp salt
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to high broil. Place peppers cut side down on a baking sheet. Broil for 5 minutes, until charred.
Once cool enough to handle, transfer peppers and remaining ingredients to a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Wings
By Kylie Cooper
Whether you’re team dry rub or all about the sauce, there’s no shortage of standout wings in the Coastal Bend. From tried-and-true classics to chef-driven takes, these five local spots are serving up craveable wings worth the mess.
B&J’s Pizza
6662 S. STAPLES ST. & 6335 SPID
Pizza joints seem to go handin-hand with excellent wings, and B&J’s Pizza knows this to be true. The Buffalo Lemon Pepper and Cracked Black Pepper and Sea Salt varieties are crowd pleasers, but the go-to order here is the Jack’s Wings. Aptly named after owner Jack Baker’s love of garlic, this six-piece comes smothered in Frank’s Red Hot Sauce and crushed red pepper flakes, and doused with loads of fresh garlic.
Lei Kitchen
4037 SARATOGA BLVD. #D
With Chef Kevin Ly at the helm, Lei Kitchen reimagines traditional Asian dishes through a modern lens, and that approach extends to its wing selection. The Korean Fried Chicken Wings stay crisp beneath their saucy coating, striking just the right balance between heat and sweetness. For something slightly more savory, the teriyaki wings are another solid pick, made with sauce prepared using an authentic Japanese method.
Marty McPies
300 N. SHORELINE BLVD.
Ever since adding wings to the menu, Marty McPies has earned a fairly permanent place on personal lists of “best wings in Corpus Christi.” Flavors range from Marty’s BBQ and Carolina Reaper to Umami and, our current favorite, Hot Honey Parm. Whatever you choose, don’t skip the homemade G.D. Ranch, as it takes every bite up a notch.
House of Rock
511 STARR ST.
Here you’ll find oven-baked wings that don’t skimp on texture or flavor. Options range from Caribbean Jerk and Garlic Parm to Bourbon Molasses and Garlic Balsamic, but we’re claiming Mango Habanero as the AllStar player here.
Birdies Wings & Bar
7514 SPID #206
A newer face in the local food scene, Birdies’ menu covers the wing gamut from combos to tenders and chicken bites. Dry rubs include usual suspects such as lemon pepper, but the Tajin or chili lime options have piqued our interest. As for sauces, you really can’t go wrong, but the honey BBQ, chile piquin parmesan and spicy Korean are truly finger-licking good.

Flavor-Packed Classics
Pho 88 brings Southern Vietnamese comfort food to the Southside
By Jacqueline Gonzalez Photos by Jason Page
Pho 88 is one of the newest spots heating up the Southside dining scene, and if the steady flow of regulars is any sign, it’s already made a strong impression. With soft green seating, rustic wood tables and colorful lanterns hanging from the ceiling, the space strikes a balance between modern and welcoming.
The idea behind Pho 88 is rooted in tradition. The owner, already known for running several nail salons across town, wanted to bring a taste of home to Corpus Christi, so he partnered with a kitchen team that knows Vietnamese cuisine inside and out. “He’s lived here for over 10 years and always wanted to open a restaurant that brought real Vietnamese flavor to the Coastal Bend,” shared Anita, the assistant manager.
Leading the kitchen is Head Chef Loan, with support from Main Chef Hung. This duo crafts a menu that feels both comforting and bold, leaning heavily on southern Vietnamese recipes and fresh, vibrant ingredients.
If you’re new to the menu, start with the Special Combo Pho: a steaming bowl of broth layered with beef ribs, tendon, well-done flank and meatballs delivering a dish full of flavor, perfectly balanced and served with all the classic add-ins.
The 88 Special Rice is another crowd favorite, served with a grilled pork chop, shredded pork skin, pork pie, pickled veggies and a fried egg. It’s the kind of dish that gives you a little bit of everything in every bite. For something a bit lighter, the 88 Combo Vermicelli is a solid go-to: grilled pork, shrimp and egg rolls over noodles and greens, finished with a tangy fish sauce dressing.
Eggrolls here are best-sellers, and for good reason. These delicious bites are stuffed with pork, shrimp, taro and carrots, then fried up fresh and served golden crisp. The Bánh Mì sandwiches bring that same level of detail: crispy baguettes packed with housemade
pâté, mayo, pickles, cucumber, jalapeños and cilantro, with the occasional American twist. “Our egg and spam sandwich is kind of a fun take on the classic,” Anita said. “We try to balance traditional Vietnamese flavors with some American ones, so everyone finds something they love.”
For something sweet and savory, try the Special Coin Bread. It’s filled with creamy mozzarella cheese and pork floss, offering a melty bite that’s hard to put down, and it can be enjoyed as either an appetizer or dessert.
To drink, Pho 88 serves a wide variety of milk teas with brown sugar tapioca, along with smoothies and fresh fruit teas. The Taro Lover is a house favorite, but there are plenty of options to satisfy every palate.
“Everything’s made fresh every day, and if customers have special requests, we try to make it happen,” Anita said. “We want people to feel at home here.”
With its laid-back vibe, carefully prepared dishes and dedication to sharing tradition, Pho 88 offers a full-on flavor experience.
The 88 Special Rice (left) and 88 Combo Vermicelli (middle) are menu favorites.
Pet Therapy: Animals as Healers
What are the benefits of Pet Therapy in the dental office?
In a search to help alleviate the stress of visiting the dentist, Pediatrix Dental welcomes Mila. She is a certified therapy dog that has helped our patients who may be a little nervous enjoy their dental visit.
Mila is friendly, patient, gentle, docile, loves hugs and to cuddle. She’s great with children.
Nervous parents and scared children feel an ease in their fears when they see a cute cuddly welcoming dog like Mila. The distraction of a therapy pet helps to break the anxiety sometimes felt from walking into a dental office. Mila’s calm demeanor helps to relax the children and they find joy in visiting the dentist. Positive interaction with a dog, such as petting, can decrease stress by increasing oxytocin and decreasing cortisol; the hormones related to stress. Studies have shown that just petting a dog can reduce the petters blood pressure and heart rate. The simple act of petting animals releases an automatic relaxation response, lowers anxiety, helps people relax and provides comfort. It has been scientifically proven that therapy dogs stimulate emotional support, which is good for psychological health.
We can not wait for you to get the chance to meet our furry new team member, Mila!
Bringing the Table to the Farm
Family-owned Edelen Farms invites guests back to the land with a homegrown dining event
By Mandy Shelton Photos provided by Edelen Farms
On a Saturday afternoon in mid-April, more than 100 guests arrived at Edelen Farms for the first in a series of farm-totable dinners. Situated just south of Alice, the farm is home to the Edelen family, a flock of chickens and a herd of cattle. On this spring night, though, the gates were open to all.
Catered by Caribbean Roots, the main courses featured Edelen Farms turkey and chicken as well as Turkey Hollow Farm beef and pork, garnished with edible flowers from McNabb Microgreens and followed by flan made with Edelen eggs and Heritage Farms raw milk.
Guests toured the nearly 350-acre farm, sipping beer donated by Nueces Brewing Co. In-kind donations and sponsorship from St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, North Bay Church of Christ and Grow Local South Texas helped make the evening possible.
The second-generation family farm, established by Greg and Lauren Edelen, is now in the hands of their son Andrew, his wife Kaylen and their 2-year-old son, Alister. The focus on grass-fed beef, pastured poultry and free-range eggs forms the basis of the farm’s subscription boxes, which Andrew hand-delivers to customers throughout the Coastal Bend. Edelen products can also be found at the downtown Corpus Christi farmers market and Boarri Craft Meats & Goods.
April’s farm-to-table event was so immersive, the Edelens brought the table out to the farm. Under the shade of a high-tunnel greenhouse hoop, guests broke homemade artisan bread with their neighbors over a banquet setting that extended toward the horizon.
“There’s something timeless and grounding about that long communal table under the hoop house. It reminds us of what mealtime is really about—people coming together,” said Kaylen.
South Texas producers who helped with the event included: Twining Tree Farm, Paloma Street Market, Lorberau Legacy Farms, Knolle Dairy Farm and more.
Edelen Farms’ next seasonal event depends on Mother Nature. “The wild cactus that we have all over South Texas puts on a fruit, and it makes really good jelly,” Andrew explained, laying out plans for a jelly-making class to “show kids how to get food just straight out of the wild.”
“Food is health,” said Andrew, who finds purpose in demonstrating a “clean and wholesome” agriculture system, especially for the next generation. “I really enjoy what I do,” he continued. “I love providing a product or a service.”
Kaylen added, “That’s our goal with these farm-to-table dinners: to create a space where strangers share stories, kids pass plates and everyone slows down to enjoy a meal that was grown locally. It’s a celebration of food, yes—but even more so, it’s a celebration of community.”
Mark your calendar for the next dinner on March 21, 2026. Until then, the online marketplace is open 24/7 for a taste of sustainable South Texas.

The Art of Ink
A new collaborative project reimagines traditional tattoo art styles
By Evelyn Martinez Photo by Shoocha Photography
Across the Coastal Bend, creativity hides in all corners — inside our art galleries, through the sounds reverberating within our live music venues and even lining the walls of tattoo studios. Those invested in the culture know of the artistry found within familyowned and operated Pinnacle Tattoo, but through an exhibition set to debut this month in the Art Center of Corpus Christi, owners Tina and Chris Lain aim to further share the overflowing beauty of this culture in its many shapes and sizes.
“I would love for people who say they hate tattoos to try and see the art past the mental block they may have on the word,” said Tina. “I hope they can see the artistry in the room. That’s going to be such an important part of the exhibit.”
Working closely alongside the Art Center’s executive director, Dianna Bluntzer Sherman, Tina and Chris, longtime partners in life and craft, worked diligently over the last year putting together a tribute to tattooing titled TRANSFERENCE. The Lains intend to bridge the gap of understanding between tattoo artists and the general public by displaying the beauty and cultural significance of the lifestyle through a mixed-medium exhibit. In presenting this art form in its various media, from classic skin canvases to more traditional artwork, the exhibit can encourage exploration and a more open mind to the historical subculture.
“There are so many facets to tattooing,” explained Tina. “We want to give everybody an opportunity to see our world and our art, but most importantly, an opportunity to see the bigger community we’re a part of.”
The opening reception includes light bites, drinks sponsored by tattoo-centered tequila brand Marcado and live music from Corpus native Michael O’Connor.
The exhibition will host pieces from the pair and their two protégés, their sons Christian and Carson, as well as a variety of guest artists, such as Ricardo Ruiz; longtime tattooers whose pieces may not directly fall under traditional tattoo art; conventional artists who took inspiration from the tattoo world; or a mixture of both.
“We hope the exhibit shows how tattooing, in general, has affected artists and the work that they do,” Chris shared. “I’ve explored other mediums in addition to tattooing. One has always fed the other, and I wanted to show how creativity melds these worlds together.”
Those well seasoned in the culture can indulge in displays of fullbody tattoo pieces and live models, alongside the reimagining of the more traditional versions of the art. To depict his tattoo imagery in other mediums, Chris collaborated with New Mexico woodworker Arthur Lopez on a panther and dagger sculpture in the traditional tattoo art style. Tina also plans to include a slice of Pinnacle in a small vignette evoking the feeling of sitting in the lobby of a shop. With the wide scope of the exhibit pulling in local, national and worldwide talent, the show promises to bring something for everyone.
Throughout the month-long exhibition, the Art Center will host discussions aimed at further educating the community on the artistry of tattoos. From the hometown camaraderie between the Lains and Blunzter Sherman, to the local acts and businesses providing support, all who worked on the project hope visitors leave with a newfound appreciation for the art of tattooing.

Writing Her Own Story
How Emma James fell in love with songwriting, and what to expect from her debut album
By Vanessa Perez Photos by Laro Pilartes
Music has been a lifelong refuge for singer-songwriter Emma James. In fact, “Refuge” was the name of her first song, written at 9 years old on an iPad as she decompressed in the backseat while her family drove out of the path of Hurricane Harvey. Since then, the 17-year-old musician has amassed over 200 songs under her belt and continues to dedicate herself to her craft. As an upcoming high school senior, James carves out time for the things most important to her while still keeping her eye on the prize: a career in music.
“I went up to a songwriting camp in Nashville the summer between eighth grade and freshman year,” James said, recalling how she fell in love with the process of intentional songwriting, co-writing and building skills from various mentorships. “I came back home from a talent showcase [later that year] and I remember telling my mom, ‘I wanna start playing gigs.’”
James’ live music journey began on the farmers market circuit, before she ventured into gigs at Executive Surf Club and other local live music staples. She recalls these beginnings, sharing her craft and the vulnerability of her work at such a young age, with a mix of surprise and retrospective admiration at the uninhibited nature of a young dreamer. Her live act came together through a process of finding the right venues, growing her original catalogue of songs and continuing to seek mentorships with studied performers like Clarissa Serna and Stephanie Skipper.
Dreaming, confidence and knowledge of her craft play equal parts in James’ career as a musician now. A studied enthusiast of music, she finds inspiration in newer country and country pop artists, from Aaron Watson to Kelsey Ballerini, Taylor Swift and Lauren Dagel. She grew
up on a mix of Texas country and Christian radio, and keeps the former’s spirit alive in her work while embracing the nuance of the current country pop revival.
Despite her age, James has a knack for picking up inspiration from both her lived experience and her true knack for storytelling. “I think a lot of my songwriting process comes from the fact that I love reading, and really, I like to make up stories,” she said. “A lot of aspects of [my songs] are real, and I feel like I’m in that transition where I’ve experienced a lot of life for a 17-year-old.”
As a burgeoning young woman in her industry, James also takes her role as an advocate for women in the arts seriously, even meeting with state representatives with ideas for policy initiatives to support women in music.
“The Texas music scene is one of my absolute favorites. Being in the Coastal Bend, it has been a little harder as a young female. As you get into the bigger venues, there is a severe lack of women, which you don’t see in Austin and Dallas,” James said about the lack of diversity in the local scene. “It’s been admitted by some booking people that they don’t think women sell tickets. They’ve been proved wrong multiple times, and that’s something that I want to work against.”
Some themes of key importance in James’ work are those considerably less explored in country music. Her debut album Heirloom is slated for release this summer. In it, James tackles topics like breaking harmful cycles and addressing generational trauma.
“The more personal a song is, the more people can relate to it,” she said. “My hope as a singer-songwriter is to help people express feelings that are hard to articulate, and to push past that stereotypical expectation for country music."
Catch Emma James at Trout Street Bar & Grill on Jul. 26 and at the Port Aransas Art Center on Aug. 1.

Education for Employment
Draughon’s provided valuable career education to local residents

The manager of the San Antonio location of Draughon’s Business College, G.W. Earthman, wrote to founder John F. Draughon in 1910 to inquire about conducting a four-month school in Corpus Christi, which he called “a little town down on the Gulf.” And it was, indeed: Corpus Christi had a population of 8,222 in that year’s census.
It was clear the growing city needed trained citizens to operate their businesses, though, and citizens put out a call for the Corpus Christi College to become a permanent location. Draughon’s was a well-respected name by the time it arrived in Corpus Christi; it became one of the largest chains of business colleges in the nation, with dozens of locations.
Located in a bustling section of Chaparral downtown, above the current location of Axis Tattoo, Draughon’s Practical
Business College educated both men and women in the necessary skills to be employable, including bookkeeping, penmanship, typewriting, banking, shorthand and other business courses. The school was deliberately “no-frills” and lacked collegiate activities such as sports teams.
The coursework was offered day, night and via correspondence, so portions of the work could be completed at home. The school promoted a guarantee of employment, with tuition due upon accepting a job. For decades, businesses in the Coastal Bend looked to Draughon’s graduates when recruiting employees to serve their business. Classes continued into the 1950s before the location was sold to Massey Business College.
