Celebrating Motherhood

Mother's Day is more than just a day on the calendar; it's a heartfelt tribute to the women who have shaped our lives with love, sacrifice, and unwavering support. As we approach this special occasion, let's delve into its origin, explore timeless traditions, and discover unique ways to make every mother feel cherished. Mother's Day is a celebration that spans generations, honoring the love, sacrifice, and resilience of mothers throughout their journey. As we commemorate this special occasion, let's explore some gift ideas tailored to each stage of motherhood, from husbands to wives, young children to their mothers, and grown children to their beloved matriarchs.

The roots of Mother's Day can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where various cultures celebrated motherhood in different forms. However, the modern iteration of Mother's Day emerged in the early 20th century thanks to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, who campaigned for a day dedicated to honoring mothers and their influence in society. In 1914, Mother's Day became an official holiday in the United States, and since then, it has spread to many countries worldwide.

As Mother's Day approaches, let's embrace the opportunity to express our love and gratitude to the remarkable women who have shaped our lives. Whether through timeless traditions, thoughtful gifts, or unique experiences, let's celebrate the pillars of love and strength that our mothers embody every day.

“A mother is a person who, seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.”

Celebrating the Arrival of Spring

12

As winter's chill fades away and the promise of warmer days beckons, people around the world welcome the month of May with jubilant celebrations known as May Day. This ancient festival, rooted in both pagan and Christian traditions, marks the transition from the barrenness of winter to the vibrancy of spring. With origins dating back centuries, May Day has evolved into a day of festivities, symbolism, and community spirit.

May Day traces its roots to ancient pagan rituals, particularly the Celtic festival of Beltane and the Roman festival of Floralia, both of which celebrated fertility, renewal, and the arrival of spring. As Christianity spread across Europe, these pagan traditions merged with Christian beliefs, leading to the establishment of May Day as a Christian holiday known as "May Day" or "Mai Day" in some regions. The name itself is derived from the Old English word "mād," meaning "mirth" or "joy."

Throughout history, people have celebrated May Day with a variety of customs and rituals, many of which continue to this day:

Maypole Dancing: Perhaps the most iconic May Day tradition, maypole dancing involves weaving ribbons around a tall pole adorned with flowers and greenery. This lively dance symbolizes the intertwining of community bonds and the flourishing of nature.

Flower Crowns and Garlands: In many cultures, May Day is associated with the giving and wearing of flower crowns and garlands. These floral adornments represent the beauty and abundance of springtime.

May Queen and King: In some regions, May Day festivities include the crowning of a May Queen and King, often chosen from among the community's youth. They preside over the celebrations and symbolize the youthful vitality of the season.

Morris Dancing: A traditional English folk dance performed on May Day and other festive occasions, Morris dancing features dancers adorned in bells, ribbons, and colorful costumes, accompanied by lively music.

May Baskets: In the United States and parts of Europe, it was once common for people to leave small baskets of flowers or treats on doorsteps as anonymous gifts on May Day morning, a gesture of goodwill and friendship.

As May Day dawns each year, it serves as a joyful reminder of nature's resilience, the spirit of community, and the timeless traditions that connect us across cultures and generations. Whether through dance, flowers, or acts of solidarity, May Day celebrations continue to inspire hope and renewal as the world embraces the warmth and vitality of spring.

MAY DAY MEMORIES: A TRADITION OF SWEET SURPRISES

As May Day dawned, I felt the familiar excitement bubbling within me. It was a day filled with the promise of spring, but more importantly, it was a day for secret missions and sweet surprises.

I grabbed my makeshift basket, crafted from a small disposable cup with a pipe cleaner handle, filled with an assortment of candies and treats. It was a tradition passed down through generations, a way to welcome the season of renewal while spreading joy to those we cared about.

With a mischievous grin, I tiptoed up to my neighbor's doorstep, heart pounding with anticipation. The thrill of the moment was palpable as I carefully placed the basket down, hoping to remain undetected. Every creak of the floorboards beneath my feet seemed to echo in the silent morning air.

But before I dashed away, there was one final touch—a quick press of the doorbell. The chime rang out, a signal of our presence before the grand reveal. Then, with a burst of giggles, I turned on my heel and hurried away, the adrenaline of the moment coursing through my veins.

As I scampered away, I couldn't help but glance back, a nervous giggle escaping my lips. Would they catch me this year? It was all part of the fun, the adrenaline rush of the unknown.

The tradition of May Day sneaking had woven itself into the fabric of our community, a cherished ritual that brought us together in laughter and camaraderie. From homemade baskets fashioned from paper plates, to carefully curated treats tucked inside, each surprise was a testament to the joy of giving and the bonds that united us.

And so, as the sun rose higher in the sky and the world bloomed with newfound vitality, we celebrated May Day in the best way we knew how—by spreading a little magic and a lot of love, one sweet surprise at a time.

Honoring the Sacrifice: Reflecting on Memorial Day

As the scent of barbeque fills the air and families gather for picnics, Memorial Day often marks the unofficial start of summer in the United States. But beyond the cookouts and long weekends lies a profound significance a day of remembrance, reflection, and reverence for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.

The Origins:

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, has its roots deeply embedded in the aftermath of the Civil War. In the spring of 1865, as the nation grappled with the staggering loss of over 600,000 lives, communities across the country began honoring the fallen by adorning their graves with flowers a poignant gesture of respect and gratitude.

The tradition evolved over the years, encompassing fallen soldiers from all conflicts, eventually becoming an official federal holiday in 1971. While its origins may lie in the aftermath of civil strife, Memorial Day now stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of sacrifice and service that transcends generations.

A Day of Remembrance:

For those who have served in the military, Memorial Day holds profound significance. It's a day to honor comrades who never returned, whose names are etched in memorials and whose memories are eternally cherished. It's a solemn reminder of the cost of freedom and the debt owed to those who paid it in full.

But Memorial Day isn't just about those who served in uniform; it's also about the families left behind the mothers and fathers, spouses and children who bear the weight of their loved one's absence every day. Their sacrifice is no less profound, their loss no less keenly felt.

Observing Memorial Day:

Across the nation, Americans observe Memorial Day in various ways, each rooted in the shared desire to honor the fallen and support those who serve. From solemn ceremonies at military cemeteries to parades honoring veterans, the day is marked by acts of remembrance and gratitude.

Many communities hold special events, such as concerts, memorial services, and wreath-laying ceremonies, to honor the fallen and support military families. These gatherings serve as reminders of the bonds that unite us as a nation and the debt we owe to those who have given their all.

Reflecting on Freedom:

As we gather with loved ones on Memorial Day, let us take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of freedom—the precious gift purchased with the blood, sweat, and tears of generations past. Let us remember that freedom is never free and that its preservation requires vigilance, sacrifice, and unwavering resolve.

In honoring the fallen, we reaffirm our commitment to the ideals for which they fought and died. We pledge to honor their memory not just with words, but with deeds to ensure that their sacrifices were not in vain and that the flame of freedom continues to burn brightly for generations to come.

This Memorial Day, as we pause to remember the fallen and cherish the blessings of liberty, let us also rededicate ourselves to the ideals that unite us as a nation. In doing so, we honor not just the memory of those who have gone before us, but the promise of a brighter future for all Americans.

Do's and Don'ts for Displaying

Glory Old 18

When displaying the flag, DO the following:

Display the U S flag from sunrise to sunset on buildings and stationary flagstaffs in the open When a patriotic effect is desired the flag may be displayed 24-hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness

When placed on a single staff or lanyard, place the U.S. Flag above all other flags.

When flags are displayed in a row, the U.S. flag goes to the observer’s left. Flags of other nations are flown at same height. State and local flags are traditionally flown lower.

When used during a marching ceremony or parade with other flags, the U.S. Flag will be to the observer’s left. On special days, the flag may be flown at half-staff. On Memorial Day it is flown at half-staff until noon and then raised

When flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day By "half-staff" is meant lowering the flag to one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff

When the flag is displayed over the middle of the street, it should be suspended vertically with the union (blue field of stars) to the north in an east and west street or to the east in a north and south street.

When placed on a podium the flag should be placed on the speaker’s right or the staging area. Other flags should be placed to the left.

When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall (or other flat surface), the union (blue field of stars) should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's left.

When displayed in a window it should be displayed in the same way -- with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street

When the flag is displayed on a car, the staff shall be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender

When the flag is used to cover a casket, it should be so placed that the union is at the head and over the left shoulder. The flag should not be lowered into the grave or allowed to touch the ground.

When saluting the flag DO the following:

All persons present in uniform (military, police, fire, etc.) should render the military salute. Members of the armed forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute.

All other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, or if applicable, remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart

When stowing or disposing of the flag, DO the following:

Fold in the traditional triangle for stowage, never wadded up.

The flag should be folded in its customary manner.

It is important that the fire be fairly large and of sufficient intensity to ensure complete burning of the flag. Place the flag on the fire.

The individual(s) can come to attention, salute the flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and have a brief period of silent reflection

After the flag is completely consumed, the fire should then be safely extinguished and the ashes buried

Please make sure you are conforming to local/state fire codes or ordinances

Quick list of Flag Etiquette Don’ts:

Don’t dip the U S Flag for any person, flag, or vessel

Don’t let the flag touch the ground.

Don’t fly the flag upside down unless there is an emergency.

Don’t carry the flag flat, or carry things in it.

Don’t use the flag as clothing.

Don’t store the flag where it can get dirty.

Don’t use it as a cover

Don’t fasten it or tie it back Always allow it to fall free

Don’t draw on, or otherwise mark the flag

Don’t use the flag for decoration Use bunting with the blue on top, then white, then red

The Coffee Clutch?!

Coffee Klatch Discovering the Magic of The

As a member of a local mom's club when my children were young, I always looked forward to our monthly gatherings. Each event offered a chance to connect with other moms, share parenting tips, and simply enjoy some much-needed adult conversation. However, there was one recurring event on our calendar that always puzzled me: the "coffee clutch."

At first, I'll admit, I had no idea what a "coffee clutch" was. Was it some fancy coffeerelated term I hadn't heard before? Or perhaps a typo in our event schedule? Nevertheless, I eagerly RSVP'd for the next coffee clutch, eager to unravel the mystery.

As the day of the event approached, I decided to do a bit of research to uncover the truth behind this enigmatic term. A quick internet search revealed that "coffee clutch" was actually a variant of "coffee klatch"—a social gathering centered around coffee and conversation. Suddenly, it all made sense.

Filled with excitement and anticipation, I arrived at our designated meeting spot—a cozy home of one of the club’s members. As I entered, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee enveloped me, and I felt a sense of warmth and belonging wash over me.

Gathering around a table with my fellow moms, we exchanged greetings and shared stories of our week. As we sipped our coffee and nibbled on pastries, the conversation flowed effortlessly, touching on everything from sleepless nights to preschool woes.

In that moment, I realized the true magic of the coffee klatch. It wasn't just about the coffee or the conversation—it was about connection. It was about coming together with like-minded individuals, forging friendships, and finding solidarity in the shared experience of motherhood.

From that day forward, the coffee klatch became a cherished tradition within our mom's club. Each month, we eagerly anticipated our gatherings, knowing that they would not only

Little Free Library

As I walked through the peaceful grounds of St. Joseph's Episcopal Church in Salado, little did I know that I was about to embark on a journey that would touch my heart in profound ways. Meeting with Pam Nelson and Nancy Bullard to learn about the Little Free Library ministry based at the church opened my eyes to the transformative power of literature and community.

Pam and her husband, Doug, penned a proposal to the church in 2015, driven by their shared love for books and a deep-seated desire to make them accessible to all. Pam, a former teacher of children's literature, recognized the pressing need for literacy materials not only within town but also for those living in surrounding areas with limited access to libraries.

Their proposal blossomed into the first Little Free Library location, and since then, the ministry has flourished to encompass six sites across the area. These little cupboards, nestled in safe spots, offer a haven for book lovers and those hungry for knowledge alike. The concept is simple yet powerful: take a book, leave a book, or simply enjoy the joy of reading without any obligation. You can visit one of these libraries at the following locations: St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church, Hidden Glen, and Heart & Hands Ministry in Salado, Spin Zone laundromat and the laundromat at Montrose Place in Belton, and the most recent addition at Holland First United Methodist Church in Holland.

28

Committee members Pam Nelson, Melissa Fletcher, and Nancy Bullard, along with a dedicated team of volunteers, work tirelessly to fill these libraries weekly. Their passion for spreading the importance of literacy is evident in every aspect of their work— from sourcing books at second-hand stores and library sales to curating themed materials for the libraries each month.

But it wasn't until we visited a nearby storage shed, brimming with shelves of books, toys, and games awaiting distribution, that I truly grasped the magnitude of their efforts. As a fellow book lover, it was a moving experience to witness the dedication and love poured into this operation.

Pam spoke highly of the support they've received from the Little Free Library organization, emphasizing the impact it has had on their mission. As our conversation came to a close, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to learn about this remarkable ministry. The Little Free Library at St. Joseph's Episcopal Church isn't just about books; it's about community, compassion, and the belief that everyone deserves access to the transformative power of reading.

Ways you can help:

Consider donating gently used books small toys, games, or gallon size ziplock storage bags. Donations can be dropped off at St. Joseph’s parish hall or Heart & Hands Food Pantry.

For information on operating your own Little Free Library, please visit littlefreelibrary.org The organization is a valuable resource and offers advice, buildling kits, and is a place to register your library and find other libraries throughout the world.

A husband becomes concerned his wife’s hearing may be deteriorating and decides to visit her doctor for advice.

“I can’t speak to my wife directly as she might find it offensive, given her age” he says to the doc.

“There’s a simple trick you can try to determine her hearing” explains the doctor. “Simply ask her a question at a distance and if she doesn’t hear you, move slightly closer and ask again until she does”.

That night, the husband arrives home and sees his wife in the kitchen cooking. He thinks to himself, “what a perfect opportunity to test her hearing”.

He stands in the doorway of the kitchen and promptly asks;

“What’s for dinner honey?”

No answer. He moves closer.

“What’s for dinner honey?”

Still no answer. He moves even closer.

“What’s for dinner honey?”

Still his wife doesn’t answer. He now sees how serious her hearing problem is. At this point, he is stood right next to his wife.

“What’s for dinner honey?”

His wife finally answers, “For the FOURTH time, we are having chicken!”

SARGE’S PG SESSION

A Warrior’s Secret Weapon: Quality Sleep in the Military

As an old timer, I learned in the life of a military member, every moment counts. From grueling physical training to executing precise missions, the demands on your body and your mind are relentless. Amidst this whirlwind of duty, there’s a silent yet potent ally often overlooked: quality sleep.

Sleep is not just a luxury; it’s a crucial component of peak performance, especially for those in the military who strive to be their best. Beyond merely recharging the body, sleep plays a pivotal role in cognitive function, emotional regulation, and decision-making – all essential aspects of military operations.

Consider the demands of combat situations. Split-second decisions can mean the difference between success and failure, life and death. Yet, sleep deprivation impairs judgment, slows reaction times, and diminishes situational awareness. In a field where clarity of mind is paramount, skimping on sleep is not an option.

Moreover, physical readiness is at the core of military effectiveness. Muscle recovery, immune function, and hormone regulation all occur predominantly during sleep. Inadequate rest not only hampers physical performance but also increases the risk of injuries and illnesses, sidelining valuable assets when they’re needed most.

But achieving quality sleep in the military isn’t without its challenges. Erratic schedules, unfamiliar environments, and high-stress levels can disrupt sleep patterns. Yet, recognizing the importance of rest, many military branches are implementing strategies to prioritize sleep hygiene. This responsibility falls on us leaders and then to be properly executed by our Soldiers. Often overlooked, this is the reason stress is multiplied to higher levels.

From establishing consistent sleep schedules to creating conducive sleeping environments, efforts are underway to optimize sleep quality. Education on the impact of sleep on performance and resilience is also gaining traction, empowering service members to prioritize their well-being.

Additionally, technological advancements offer promising solutions. Wearable devices can monitor sleep patterns, providing insights for personalized sleep improvement strategies. Innovative sleep environments, such as portable blackout curtains and noise-cancelling headphones, help create an oasis of tranquility even in the midst of chaos.

So, how can military members prepare themselves for good sleep? First, establishing a regular sleep schedule is crucial. Consistency helps regulate the body’s internal clock, making it easier to fall asleep and wake up refreshed. Creating a relaxing bedtime routine, such as reading or practicing mindfulness, signals to the body that it’s time to wind down.

Furthermore, optimizing the sleep environment is key. Minimizing noise and light, ensuring comfortable bedding, and maintaining a cool room temperature can all contribute to better sleep quality And for those struggling to fall asleep, techniques like deep breathing exercises or progressive muscle relaxation can help calm the mind and body.

As we honor the sacrifices and dedication of our military members, let’s not forget to acknowledge the importance of quality sleep in their lives. It’s not just about rest; it’s about readiness, resilience, and the unwavering commitment to fulfill their duty with excellence. So, here’s to ensuring that those who protect us also get the rest they deserve – for a well-rested warrior is a formidable force indeed.

So, from an old-timer and long retired Soldier, don’t take for granted the need for time in the fart sack. Good practice with sleeping routines will pay dividends in your later life.

Recent Spring rain in our area brought forth a beautiful renewal in the colorful display of freshness of the flowers, plants, and grass after the death of winter. The book of nature is evocative of Psalm 104: “(Lord), send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.” Both nature and the Scripture tell us the hopeful truth that God is constantly pouring forth loving energy to sustain and recreate the world.

In May we will celebrate Pentecost, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Jesus’ disciples, fifty days after Jesus’ resurrection (Acts 2:1,4). God the Father, who loves the world so much, has already sent his only Son to be among us to open the way to truth and life through his death and resurrection (John 3:16, 17). Now together with the Son, He sent the Holy Spirit to renew and restore the world through Christ’s Body, the Church. I pray that God, who is well acquainted with human chaos and suffering, grant each of us his Spirit through faith so we can be healed and transformed to be a channel of blessing to our community and the world.
