“Give It Up!” for Lent The East Bangor United Methodist Community Church is offering a Lenten Study using Dottie Escobedo-Frank’s work, “Give it Up!” This “user-friendly,” study raises up the distractions that are part of our 21st century living, and how we might properly use, but not abuse, the latest advances in our world. State Rep. Joe Emrick HARRISBURG – State Rep. Joe Emrick (R-Nazareth) has been appointed to serve on four standing House committees for the 2015-16 session. Emrick, who is entering his third term in office, is a member of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Game and Fisheries, Human Services and Professional Licensure committees.

“Many of the 27 House committees have met and begun the task of moving bills before the full House for a vote,” said Emrick. “I’m looking forward to the challenge of evaluating the many pieces of legislation with which we deal and taking them up in committee as part of the legislative process.”

Responsibilities of the committees on which Emrick will serve are as follows: • Agriculture and Rural Affairs - Maintains legislative involvement in agriculture and rural areas, dealing with issues such as dog law enforcement, agriculture research, food safety and farmland preservation. In recent years, it has moved legislation concerning nutrient management and Pennsylvania’s Clean and Green Law. • Game and Fisheries - Receives and reviews annual performance and status reports from the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

• Human Services - Responsible for oversight of the Departments of Drug and Alcohol, Health and Human Services (formerly the Department of Public Welfare).

• Professional Licensure (vice-chairman) – Provides Pennsylvania’s 29 licensing boards with legal, technical and logistical support to administer their licensure programs. Recent issues include legislation to regulate massage therapists and crane operators.

Blue Mountain Community Library Fundraiser A Fundraiser for The Blue Mountain Community Library will be held on Thursday, February 19th, from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM at the Café on Broadway, 21 S. What's Happening in the Belt and Beyond?

The Blue and White Foundation Working for Pius X Since the meeting where over 200 people showed up to show their support and loyalty for Pius X, the Blue and White Foundation has created several committees to begin working on an action plan that they believe will save Pius X from closing. Within just a few days of this large meeting every committee met, put together an action plan, and began the process of working on their plans. A representative of The Blue and White Foundation Oversight Committee attends each meeting up the committees on progress, to answer questions, and to help work on tasks with the committees.

Some of the action plan created includes the following items: • A Go Fund Me account was established under the name of Save Pius X: Blue & White Foundation. In addition to the Go Fund Me account, checks can be made payable to Blue and White Scholastic Foundation and mailed to PO Box 17, Bangor, PA 18013.

• A huge hurdle was overcome on Friday. OLMC (a feeder school to Pius X) will stay open if 150 students are enrolled for September 1st.

• A dance will be held at the Blue Ridge Estate Winery & Vineyards located at 239 Blue Ridge Road, Saylorsburg on Saturday, February 28th from 7:00 PM-10:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased

• The donor committees have created letters to email out to potential donors. The donor committees will also be holding phone banks to reach out to alumni and community members for support.

• The enrollment committee is working on increasing the amount of students that will attend Pius X next year.

• The public speaking committee is scheduling speaking engagements to increase enrollment and talk about the financial needs of Pius X. You can find the Blue and White Foundation through social media to follow their progress, get updates, and see what events or meetings are coming up. Their facebook page is Blue & White Scholastic Foundation and the twitter account is @BlueWhite Foundation.

Stayed tuned for more updates or visit the social media sites. The Blue and White Foundation committees will have some exciting events and news to share as they continue to work on their action plans! The committees are focused and working full steam ahead with no doubt that they can overcome. Letter to the Editor The Pentecostal Christian Church The Truth has been supporting God’s people in Haiti for many years. Through multiple mission trips, our Reaching Haiti Ministry team has been able to bring these precious lives food, clothing, toiletries, backpacks, sandals, books, other necessary supplies, and most importantly hope and love.

Specifically, our team supports a small, independent orphanage called “Blessing the Children Ministry” in the area of the municipality of Croix des Bouquets, Haiti. This orphanage is run out of Pastor Hubert Noel’s humble home, where he is currently caring and providing for 20 children, including his own.

In May 2015, the Reaching Haiti Ministry team plans to make a fourth trip to Haiti. In order to make it possible to bring more necessary food and supplies, we are seeking out the help of local businesses and organizations. Your tax deductible gift will go a long way in providing the basic essentials these children so desperately need – items that we take for granted in the comfort of our homes here in America.

2015 Pius X HOBY Award Recipient Pius X Jr/Sr High School is proud to announce the 2015 Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Award recipient is current sophomore, Brenda Haycock. Brenda is the daughter of Kevin and Michelle Haycock and resides in Columbia, NJ. This prestigious award has been in existence since 1958 and recognizes high school youth for the contributions and leadership attributes to both their school community and the community in which they live.

Brenda Haycock HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. The faculty and staff at Pius X was asked to nominate a sophomore student that best meets the criteria set forth by the HOBY guidelines. Brenda was selected based on her leadership potential and commitment to serving our school community in a positive manner. For her achievements, she will attend a weekend seminar sponsored by HOBY this spring at Villanova University.

“Good Morning, Bangor”: Hairspray Pancake Breakfast Submitted by Jennifer Newland This year Bangor Area High School Theater Department headed by Mr. Joseph “Butch” DiMinico is performing Hairspray as their Spring Musical for the Freddy Awards. Mr. DiMinico returned to Bangor last year as the Director of Suessical and has since come on board full time at Bangor Area High School as a teacher and musical Director.

Mr. DiMinico feels like he is back at home and enjoys how the community and families involved support the theater and music programs at the Bangor Area School District.

Hairspray is not only an upbeat musical with lots of dancing, but is also teaching the students in the theater department at Bangor about the history created during the 1960's. In the musical Hairspray, Tracy Turnblad obsesses over the The Corny Collins Show and Link Larkin, a dancer on the show. Eventually Corny Collins gives Tracy a chance to be on his show. Once on the show, Tracy uses her new found stardom to advocate for racial integration on the show. Through trials and tribulation, Tracy is able to succeed in her mission and the show becomes integrated.

To give the community a preview of the show, a pancake breakfast fundraiser was held on February 7th at the Bangor Area Middle School. With a packed house for breakfast, the students performed several of the songs in costume for their breakfast audience. Items, PORTLAND HARDWARE books and pictures from the 60's era were on display to incorporate the historical importance of the 60's era. In addition, the students Portland Hardware held a Grand taught dance lessons on how to do 60's era dances. The audience Opening and Ribbon Cutting on was up dancing to the Twist and doing the Mashed Potato. The Saturday, January 31st.

Joe and Phyllis Danubio of Roseto, are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Joelyn Marie, to Stephen Douglas Peifly, son of Jane Cuono Peifly and the late Douglas Peifly of Pen Argyl. Miss Danubio, a graduate of Bangor High School and Kutztown University, is a graphic designer at Working Dog Press of Allentown and helps with The Belt and Beyond.

Stephen is a graduate of Pen Argyl High School and is currently employed at Premier Granite and Marble of Pen Argyl. A wedding is planned for November 2015.

Sometimes when you are searching for love it is right there in front of you. . .

Joelyn and Steve met in high school when they were 15. Steve was the first boy Joelyn ever dated. Through the years they remained friends and kept in touch. This is their love story.

Steve's cousin was getting married, and by chance I messaged him online and I asked him if he was going to the wedding the next day. He said he was going to ask me the same question!

Well, I wasn't going, but an hour after our conversation, he had convinced me to be his date. We attended the wedding and had a great time.

A month had passed since the wedding, and Steve thought about me a lot and finally asked me out on a date. “I just might surprise you” he said, confident that I was "the one." I agreed to go out with him and we went to dinner at a nice restaurant in Easton and had a fantastic time. He took me on many dates after that. He was such a gentleman. We went to the Roseto Big Time and shared our first kiss after the fireworks and it was as if it were 17 years ago and all those memories of us dating in high school came flooding back. It felt like we were kids again!

The more time we spent together and really got to know each other again, the more we realized how much we had in common and loved spending time together. Crazy how we lived only two minutes away from each other all these years. Our relationship developed really quickly and soon knew we were falling in love. I was so glad I took a chance!

For Christmas I wanted to give Steve the ultimate gift. Since Steve is a die hard Green Bay Packers fan I secretly bought tickets to fly to Tampa Bay where they would be playing the Packers right before Christmas. A close friend lives in Tampa and helped arrange the trip.

The day of the surprise trip finally arrived. We planned to have dinner in Bethlehem, but little did either of us know, it would be a day they we would never forget! I told Steve on his way to pick me up from work, that we had to make a stop to drop my coworker off at the airport. As we pulled up at the airport, everyone got out and on cue I asked my friend Ada to take a couples photo of us.

Anyone who knows me knows that this is not out of the ordinary for me to take photos. After the first photo, I took off my jacket to show Steve my shirt, which said “We are going to Tampa! Green Bay Packers, Battle of the Bays, December 21, 2014.” I was so excited that I was able to pull this off, but was shocked and wondered why Steve wasn’t nearly as excited about the surprise. Little did I know that he had just picked up my engagement ring and had it in his coat pocket!

“Yeah I’m excited!” he finally said after I kept asking him! “Leave your coat in the car, it's 80 degrees in Florida!” I said. Steve still seemed distracted or confused I wasn't sure. We moved the car to departures and I was getting my bag out of the front seat. As I turned around, he was down on one knee and said “Well I guess this is the weekend of surprises, and I have one too!” I was so shocked that he proposed and of course I said YES! I hugged him and was crying tears of overwhelming joy. What an amazing night! We surprised each other and had no idea of the others plan. It was a night we will never forget and thanks to my friend Ada, who recorded the magical moment.

We called our parents (who knew before hand what was about to transpire and were anxiously awaiting the phone call for us to share the good news).

We boarded the plane and were off to spend the weekend in Tampa, where we went to Busch Gardens and watched the Packers beat Tampa Bay. It was the best 48 hours and just the beginning of us spending the rest of our lives together. When we returned home we told our friends and family about our adventures and surprise engagement. It was an incredible surprise and we can't wait to spend the rest of our lives together!

He was right, I am “the one! I would have never expected to have found this kind of love, my soul mate and future husband, who was always near the entire time.

I found "the one" and like they say, when you least expect it, love finds you! When it's right, it's right!

an aloe vera plant hanging at the entrance of a home or business. It is believed that the aloe vera plant is of good luck and keeps negative energy out of a home.

If the aloe vera plant dies it is because it absorbed negative energy.

Whether this is true or not this plant has so many healing abilities that everyone should have an aloe plant in their home. With it’s cactuslike appearance you’d think it was any old plant. Aloe vera produces at least six natural antiseptics, that can kill mold, bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Snip the tip of squishy leaf and you will see a gel like substance or the sap. This Aloe gel can be used for hair loss, acne, wrinkles, psoriasis and minor burns like sun burn. You will find many aloe gels being sold in pharmacies and stores that are used for sunburns, but the truth is that most of these gels contain harmful preservatives and added water. Technically, you will never find a “pure” commercial gel sold. Even natural and organic aloe gels have stabilizers in them to keep them from going bad. Just because it says 100% aloe vera gel doesn’t mean it’s 100% aloe. The gel or sap from the leaf of the aloe plant is the only all natural gel you can get. If you are going to buy aloe gel I recommend getting an organic cold pressed aloe gel that does not contain harmful additives and uses natural preservatives. Aloe vera juice is also great to take. It is great for gastrointestinal disorders like indigestion, constipation and acid reflux. Adults can take up to one ounce daily to help with elimination and regularity and overall intestinal health. Due to its many healing properties it’s a great juice to drink in small quantities. I like to mix it in my 2 year old’s apple juice to help her with her irregularity. You can find aloe juice or also called Aloe liquid in a health food store or online. Do not ingest pure aloe from the plant or it can cause a laxative effect and cramping. Always consult your doctor before ingesting or using any new product or natural remedy. Especially if pregnant or for children. What Time is the Right Time...

Life is full of relationships. Was it really that long ago when we would get together with friends and the conversation was centered on “the kids?” Now it seems, when we’re out to dinner, instead of discussing our children, now the topic goes to our elderly parents, including their medical condition, are they able to live alone, how long before they’ll need assistance, and how can we help them live the best life possible.

It can be absolutely joyful for those of us blessed with a family of loving grandparents and great-grandparents. We understand how much they have to give and share - helping us with tasks, solving problems, or just sitting, listening and talking about life.

Regardless of age, we all want to have meaning and quality in our lives.

No parent wants to be a burden to his or her children. We all desire to maintain our independence. Yet, there is the reality that our aging parents may need our help, and we want them to be able to leave a family legacy for generations to come and to embrace change and possibly learn new skills.

However, there are real issues, emotional, physical, practical and financial, that adult children should contemplate regarding caring for elderly parents, including, the need for alternative living arrangements that will provide the best quality of life for them.

Scott explained that over forty percent of Phoebe nursing home residents and a smaller percentage in other living situations rely on Phoebe’s promise of charitable care. Last year, Phoebe provided more than $12.5 million in charitable care to their residents.

Katherine and Teribio Cuono of West Bangor celebrated their 66th Wedding Anniversary on December 26, 2014 with their family.

Mrs. Cuono is the daughter of the late Giuseppe (Joseph), Sr. and Maria Giuseppa (Carrescia) Cerino who lived in Bangor. She retired from the garment industry in 1988.

Mr. Cuono is the son of the late John, Sr. and Madalena (Nicoletti) Cuono, who lived in West Bangor. He retired in 1987 after thirty-six years in the garment industry. He served in the 5th Air Force Army in the South Pacific during World War II. The couple was married on December 26, 1948, in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Roseto by the late Reverend Joseph Ducci.

Mrs. Cuono, given in marriage by her father, wore a white satin gown trimmed with seed pearls and sequins. A headdress of seed pearls held her fingertip veil, and she carried gardenias and lilies of the valley.

The maid of honor was dressed in an aqua taffeta gown with matching Juliet cap. She carried white chrysanthemums. The flower girl’s frock was white satin. She wore a matching headpiece and carried white carnations. Members of the bridal party were the best man, the late Mr. Angelo Cuono, the groom’s brother; the maid of honor, the late Mrs. Marie (Visingaldi) Albanese; and the flower girl, Mrs. Cecilia (Cascioli) Oliver.

They were long time members of St. Roch’s Catholic Church in West Bangor. They have three daughters: Priscilla, wife of Leon deLeon of Lower Saucon Township; Briedella, wife of Dennis Fehr of Pen Argyl and Lori, wife of Edward Imparato of Cheyney. They also have three granddaughters Myra Fehr, Krista, wife of Jason Evans, and Tresa Imparato; one grandson, Edward Imparato, Jr, six great-grandchildren, Brian, William, Katherine, James, Ella, and Madelynn Evans.

INGREDIENTS YOU NEED: 2 1/2 Cups Flour (white or wheat) 1 Chicken or Beef Bouillon Cube 1 tsp. Salt 1/2 Cup Hot Water 1 Egg Baking Sheet & Cookie Cutter

How to Make Homemade Dog Biscuits:

• Step 1: Start by preheating your oven to 350˚. Put the 1/2 cup of water into a microwavable bowl and heat it until it’s almost boiling. Then drop your bouillon cube in the water to dissolve. Microwave the water until it is almost boiling then place the bouillon cube in to dissolve.

• Step 2: Now throw all the ingredients into a mixing bowl and begin to stir until everything is combined. Mix all the ingredients together.

Stir until everything is combined.

• Step 3: Sprinkle some flour onto your work surface and begin to roll out the dough. Then grab your cookie cutter and start cutting out your dog biscuits. Sprinkle a good amount of flour on your work surface and your hands. Place the biscuit dough onto the the floured board. Use a rolling pin to spread out the dough. Grab your cookie cutter and start cutting! It helped us to dip the cutter in some flour to prevent the dough from sticking to the cutter. Continue to cut your bones, alternating the placement of the cutter to get the most out of your dough.

• Step 4: Place the dog biscuits on the cookie sheet and bake at 350˚ for 30 minutes!

The fat and sugar in chocolate can cause an upset stomach and this is what happens in most chocolate ingestion cases. However, chocolate can also be directly toxic because of a compound called theobromine. The more chocolate liquor there is in a product, the more theobromine there is. This makes baking chocolate the worst for pets, followed by semi-sweet and dark chocolate, then milk chocolate and chocolate flavored cakes and cookies. Signs of theobromine intoxication are vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, tremors, seizures, racing heart, rhythm progressing to abnormal rhythms, and death in severe cases.

If the chocolate was eaten recently, it may be possible to induce vomiting; otherwise, hospitalization and support are needed until the chocolate has worked it’s way out of the system. A call to the Pet Poison Helpline, ASPCA Poison Control, or to your veterinarian can help calculate the risk, and go over the treatment options should you discover an empty box of chocolates at Fido’s feet.

One of the most significant dangers to our feline friends comes in the form of true lily. Plant species from the Lilium (Easter Lily) and the Hemerocallis (Daylily) families will cause kidney failure and death in cats if ANY part of the plant is eaten. If a cat eats the equivalent of less than one leaf, it can become severely ill. They may vomit initially, then appear to be okay, but if treatment is delayed more than 18 hours, their kidneys will fail and they may die. Do not mess around with cats and lilies; make sure if you have these plants anywhere in or around your premises, your cat cannot access them.

Should you suspect your cat has snacked on one, a visit to your veterinarian for blood monitoring and supportive care, is in order.

As little as 6 ounces of milk chocolate is enough to cause a moderate to severe reaction in a twenty pound dog. So remember, to share the love, but hide the chocolate and flowers!

That Infamous Check Engine Light: What this Common Car Alert Means

"Motorists should not get spooked when the check engine light comes on," said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. "When illuminated, the check engine light usually means that a vehicle system, such as the ignition, fuel injection or emission control, is not operating properly."

List of common causes: Common malfunctions that can cause the check engine light to illuminate include a faulty oxygen sensor, mass air flow sensor, or spark plugs and wires. If the light flashes, the condition is more critical and must be checked immediately to prevent severe damage, which may include catalytic converter damage.

"Even if the vehicle appears to be running normally, ignoring the warning light could result in more costly repairs," continued White.

"At the very least, the light could be alerting you to an engine problem that is negatively impacting fuel economy and costing you money."

Seek professional assistance: When scheduling service, make sure the repair shop that examines your vehicle has professional technicians who are trained and certified in OBDII diagnosis and repair. The technician will connect your vehicle's computer system to a diagnostic scan tool, which will provide trouble codes indicating why the check engine light was activated. Once the problem is identified and the repair is made, the car's computer is then reset.

Indie band from LA: Dead Sara Music History is rich with rock bands fronted by Dynamic duos. Looking to carry on this yin and yang tradition are two talented young women, singer Emily Armstrong and Siouxsie Medley, who front Los Angeles’ Dead Sara – an electrifying four-piece rock band whose supercharged music is propelled by Medley’s exhilarating, monster guitar riffs and Armstrong’s powerful, wailing vocals.

The two musicians are a study in contrast onstage: Medley remains rooted in place – a solid, steady anchor for Armstrong’s almost unhinged performance style. A skilled vocal stylist who can handle blues, soul, and folk-rock with equal aplomb, Armstrong can unleash a guttural howl one minute and trill as pretty as a songbird the next.

When asked by the Wall Street Journal in 2012 which female rock singers she admired, legendary Jefferson Airplane singer Grace Slick said Emily Armstrong, citing her “strong, urgent sound.” Dead Sara, which also includes bassist Chris Null and drummer Sean Friday, has continued to earn the respect of some of the biggest artists in rock and roll over the last two years. In an interview with Fuse in 2013, Dave Grohl simply stated, “Dead Sara should be the next biggest rock band in the world.”

The band has always generated major buzz around their shows, being known for their ferocious spectacle of high-octane live performances. Of one of their local shows at The Troubadour, L.A.’s indie-rock tastemaker website Picksysticks.com raved: “You almost forgot you were watching a rock show in the 450-capacity Troubadour and not in a venue like Staples Center that holds thousands when Dead Sara launched into their hit “Weatherman.”

OC Weekly has praised the band for its “blazing, impassioned classic rock, punk/indie jams, catchy guitar melodies and songs about not backing down,” while Buzzbands.la noted that Dead Sara’s strain of primal rock is loud enough to awaken the ghosts in both the indie and metal underworlds, and maybe even get them to dance a bit. During their 2013 U.S. tour with Muse, Chicago Music Monthly stated that “Dead Sara is an example of everything that is right with rock and roll. Their live show is one that will NOT be forgotten for hundreds of Muse fans seeing them for the first time.”

Dead Sara has spent the last several months in the studio working on new material with producer Noah Shain. With their sophomore album on the horizon, both Dead Sara fans and rock fans alike can expect more electrifying shows in 2015.
