SKIN FACTS

The skin is the body's largest organ and, together with the hair and nails, performs many vital functions, including protection, temperature regulation, absorption, secretion, excretion, sensation, and vitamin D production to help maintain homeostasis.

FACT: Acid mantle creates a protective barrier formed from a combination of surface dead skin cells (stratum corneum), sweat, and sebum, which collectively have an antiseptic, bactericidal effect on the skin.

FACT: Melanin produced in the stratum germinativum as a direct result of sun exposure protects underlying structures. Melanin moves up the layers and has the effect of darkening the skin.

FACT: Hair and nails form hardened protrusions that create protective coverings. Both hair and nails originate from the stratum germinativum, where cells differentiate to form specific protective structures.
