Michael Mohr to leave St. Joe, join Jesuits

Respected high school English teacher felt calling to religious life since ninth grade By MATTHEW HARKEY The Bear Facts St. Joseph English teacher Michael Mohr said he is ready to take the biggest step in his life: joining the Society of Jesus and becoming a Jesuit priest. Mr. Mohr, who joined the faculty three years ago, plans to join the Society of Jesus, better known as the Jesuits,

this summer. After discerning for a little more than 19 months, Mr. Mohr said he believes he is being called to serve God in a special way. “I probably would have never entered the Society of Jesus ... if I had never meet Mr. Heller,” said Mr. Mohr, referring to the former principal of St. Joe who hired Mr. Mohr. When Mr. Mohr first arrived, he met

Events leading up to the big night actually begin four days earlier on Sunday at the Senior Celebration and Reception in the Fine Arts building. Many seniors at St. Joe say they are ready for graduation. “There will be a lot of teary eyes in the building when all the seniors get their diploma and officially graduate,” said senior Nick Fertitta. Here is a look at the week’s events: NICK FERTITA n Sunday, May 19: The Senior Celebration and Reception. The event is set for 3 p.m. in the Fine Arts building. The ceremony recognizes achievements seniors have made in the past year. The event is expected to end at about 5 p.m. n Monday, May 20: Graduation Practice. Seniors must participate in a rehearsal of the commencement program. The rehearsal will start at 9:30 a.m.; it is the only formal rehearsal for graduation. n Tuesday, May 21: Baccalaureate Mass. Dance for the kids of Blair E. Batson By RACHEL DIVINE The Bear Facts St. Joseph Catholic School students raised more than $11,500 for the Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital from this year’s Dance Marathon – continuing a successful streak that began with the first school-sponsored event in 2011. This year’s Dance Marathon took place Friday, May 3, in the school gym. Students were on their feet for eight hours dancing and partying to music. Each dancer had to raise $100 each; they raised a total amount of $11,585. Senior Teryn Yazdani led the efforts organizing the third annual event.

“I wanted to MORE INSIDE help with DM n Photos because I had so from Dance much fun as a dancer its very Marathon, first year and Page 2 saw what good it did,” Yazdani said. “I knew that if I helped out it would be a fun way to make a difference with an event that was unique.” The event was so successful that Mary Ann Tawwatters, a 12th grade religion teacher, fulfilled her promise to cut 1 inch of her hair for every thousand dollars raised. So, during morning assembly on Tuesday, May 7, Mrs. Tawwatters

snipped 11 inches of her hair. At the Dance Marathon, students were met by and interacted with children from the hospital. There were many activities planned throughout the event. There was a dodgeball game, a session with a professional choreographer and different little games the dancers could play. One of the Batson patients serenaded students by singing a song for them, bringing tears to many people’s eyes.
