I would like to thank Mayling Ganuza for being the best advisor we could have asked for and helping us find solutions to all the countless problems that occured this year. Ms. Ganuza, I will never forget the wonderfully strange background music you played every class and the stories of your incredible life.
Gina Crespo Former Editor-In-Chief
The Editors’ Farewell
To the most influential teacher I have ever had, and the woman who raised me, my mom, I can never thank you enough for everything you have done for me. I hope that I can grow up to be half the woman you are today. Thank you for forcing me to attend this beautiful school. I love you, Stella Crespo
Goodbye MAST Academy, I will miss your sunrises and unreliable AC. Thank you for helping me find incredible friends such as Diana Espindola, Alejandra Almada, Dylan Cooper, Alexis Whitby, and Julia Cooper. Most importantly, thank you and goodbye to The Beacon, my home for the past three years, where I found a second family.

Kaylee Rodriguez, without you, I really do not think I could have ever sur vived. You are the reason I was able to laugh instead of cry when we had to fix the paper. Not only are you kind and funny, but you are one of the most intelligent people I have had the privilege of meeting. I know you will do great things in the future.
To the future staff of The Beacon, I know that you will continue to be amazing leaders and journalists. I have faith that the paper is in good hands.
Carlos Couzo, I will always remember your realistic outlook on life and passion for history. Lilia Avendano, your passion made me learn to love math and your advice changed my life for the better. Dr. Samantha Bañal, I will never forget your kindness, big heart, and your ability to discuss life through incredible litera ture. Jeffrey Raymond, thank you for always making me laugh and smile.
On my first day at this small school by the sea, I would have never believed that I would learn the most from my journalism class and make some of the best memories during my time on The Beacon staff.
I can’t say goodbye to my friends just yet because I know that this is just the beginning for us. I am so grateful to have been surrounded by your constant love, support, and laughter. I am so happy that I have gotten to share some of the great est moments of my life alongside you all. Emily, Zuzelle, Reid, and Robert, you’re not done with me yet. I’m coming to visit you in

My freshman year, the kind, wise Lavetta Ulman tricked me into applying for a position on The Beacon staff and subsequently making one of the best decisions of my high school career. I arrived as a quiet, frizzy haired sophomore who was prepared to hide behind a camera. Thanks to Karen Sutton’s guidance, I soon opened up to some amazing people. Our conversations about ridiculous or even controversial topics made the time after school, proofreading hundreds of articles, and doing endless amounts of points, bearable.
My time at MAST Academy and as a member of the Beacon Staff has provided me with a myriad of beautiful memories. From kayaking in the bay, to riding the Metrorail with my friends, to running across the field with the senior class, I can truly say that when I look back at these past four years, I am filled with joy I want to begin by saying goodbye to my teachers. You have been integral to my growth both as a student and person. I will never forget building a marsh mallow-launching catapult in Ms. Sese’s class, learning to use my scuba gear with Ms. Henny, or turning in my research paper to Ms. Crespo with the “Final Countdown” playing in the background. I would like to give a special thanks to Ms. Sutton, Ms. Crespo, Mr. Couzo, Ms. Avendano, and Dr. Banal. You have taught me to take pride in my work and constantly challenged me. Thank your kindness, passion, and for being role-models in and out of the classroom.

Finally, I’d like to thank Ms. Ganuza and Gina for their dedication and support. We were a trio team this year. If it weren’t for you, I would have probably lost my sanity each time pages went missing or graphics didn’t cooperate. Ms. Ganuza, you will certainly be missed but I know that you are going to live it up as the best teacher Bali has ever seen. Gina, I know that you are on to big things and I am so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to learn from you and your leadership.
I don’t know where to begin because I don’t want this goodbye to end. When Ms. Ulman suggested signing up for newspaper, I would have never imagined that I’d discover a passion for journalism, a lifelong group of friends, and that one day I’d be sitting here writing my final goodbye as Editor-in-Chief.

21 Seniors, we will miss you! Best wishes, the Humanities Department! BEST WISHES TO THE CLASS OF 2019 from the mean math teachers (who wear pink on Wednesday)

Thank to
22 CongratulationsClassof2019!

you for your warm welcome. It was an honor

be your Captain.

A Ganuza Goodbye!

Mayling Ganuza Newspaper Advisor

I learned a lot from this rambunctious group. For example, students can get into wars over parking spots, making competing t-shirt brands, and clique names. I also learned new vocabulary, like “chama break” and “SOAR!” Thanks to you, I now have a phone caddy in my class. We shared a lot of laughs, and for that I am grateful. It makes teaching worthwhile. And what makes life worthwhile? ADVENTURE! Go out into the world, open to having new experiences and meeting new people. Re member, you can’t be old and wise without being young and crazy (but not Britney-Spears-circa-2008 crazy. Let’s not overdo it, kids.)

Also, shout out to my newspaper staff! I’m so proud of what you accomplished this year. You worked so well as a team, and your dedication, creativity, and sweet snark made it a joy to work on The Beacon. I’m definitely not going to forget listening to Katy Perry at 9pm while you finished this issue. Much love to you all!

“Isaid.have to say that my favorite moment of senior year, after spend ing so many years together, would have to be prom. It was the most amazing experience to see everyone all grown up and looking their best,” Emily Visnich said.

“Homecoming was our favorite moment because we got to dance to Post Malone and we went to Denny’s afterward. It was a fun night filled with dancing and laughter,” Victoria Heijn and Nicole Perez

“One of my favorite moments of senior year was getting to wear our senior crowns on the first day of school,” Janine Sande said.
“Lifting George at prom was the highlight of my year because it was hype. We were celebrating a legend,” Jaylen Bishop said.
“It is difficult to pinpoint one specific moment from this year that stands out more than others. In many ways, I think one of the greatest momements from senior year was being able to hold the yearbook once it was finished. That tangible token of my effort all four years in and out of our classroom hit me differently this time. It was this weird moment where I was like ‘this is it, this is my last one.’ I finally felt like a senior. It was very bittersweet,” Alexandra Fener said.
“My favorite moment of senior year was when Mr. Carasusan brought us Pastelitos,” Nicole Helou said.

“Pep rally this year was super fun because the whole grade got together in a spirit of unity. After four years of going to school together, the run on to the field really embodied our class coming together as seniors,” Matias Urcuyo said.

I will always remember will be the musicals I was part of. This year, I was in Sweet Charity. Before highschool I had never done theater or singing. I loved being surrounded by such friendly and talented people,” Amanda Marban said.

Senior Year Highlights

“One of my favorite moments of this year was playing assasin and our assassins not being able to kill us, even though they tried their hardest,” Sabrina Fradette said.
My favorite part of senior year was experimental science. We built catapults and painted tiles. Also, Ms. Sese is the goat,” Brendon Urena Somethingsaid.that
