Different books different personalities

I

, the “let’s-spread-the-joy-of-reading” English major, thought it would be possible to recommend a book for every personality type, until I did some research. Quickly, I was humbled as I read about dozens of personality theories and models and realized that I have not the authority or the psychological knowledge to make this article satisfy every reader. Most people share traits from two or more personality types, making it impossible to declare a book perfect for one type and ill-fitting for another. Amid my dismay and confusion, with diagrams of Jungians, Doshas and Somatotypes biting at my sense of self, I decided to settle on “The Four Humors” theory. Because this was the first personality model, developed by the ancient Greeks, and because William Shakespeare and Geoffrey Chaucer used it for characterization and poetic flow, it proves adequate enough for me. The first humor is a “choleric” one, meaning that the person this describes is often irritable because of an excess of yellow bile, associated with fire. So, what would someone with a liver full of yellow bile want to read? I recommend a book that addresses social problems and human rights, like The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. The book moves reasonably fast with chilling scenarios and uncensored conflicts both internal and external. In the novel, women are banned from reading or learning and are assigned to positions in society based on the condition of their ovaries and looks. This is a novel sure to evoke both societal analysis and nightmares. The “melancholic” humor

results from an excess of black bile, and often is assigned to the pessimistic type. For this, I suggest Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. What melancholy individual would not enjoy a book whose title denotes a lose-lose situation? A satirical historical novel set in the late stages of World War II, Catch-22 offers a healthy mix of dark humor and gory battle scenes. It is difficult to summarize the book because it is written in a non chronological style which mirrors the confusion and craziness of the world. The book reveals the brutal and unforgiving nature of war and life in general. On a brighter note, the “sanguine” humor, having an excess of blood, is the personality type of the optimistic and open-minded. Weetzie Bat by Francesca Lia Block is perfect for the sanguine. The story takes place in a romanticized Los Angeles, named Shangri-LA,

featuring characters Weetzie and Dirk. Weetzie is granted three wishes by a genie and experiences their unexpected ramifications. While being almost a fairytale, the book freely explores the issues of blended families, AIDS and homosexuality. The book, which continues to be a bestseller, was published in 1989 and birthed a completely new genre called Pop-MagicRealism. The final humor is “phlegmatic,” the excess liquid being phlegm, and applies to calm and passive folk. The Diaries of Adam and Eve by Mark Twain is a beautiful spin on the classic Bible story and reflects Twain’s easy-going style. Written as a series of diary entries, the book provides fictional viewpoints from both Adam and Eve, and gives such details as their first impressions of the stars, each other and God as they grow and mature together in and out of Eden. Christians and non-Christians alike will find this book to be enjoyable as it projects an original love story and humanistic values.

Lohan kept away from public

LOS ANGELES — Lindsay Lohan’s time in jail will be short, but her time away from the public eye will be much longer. Sheriff’s officials say the actress will spend only about two weeks of a 90-day sentence in jail. But her brief time in an isolation cell that has housed other celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Michelle Rodriguez is just one element of a sentence that is designed to punish and rehabilitate the star. Once Lohan is released in early August, she will be required to report to probation officials within a day. She has also been ordered to spend three months at an inpatient rehab. That portion of her sentence won’t be trimmed like her jail stint by overcrowding and credits for good behavior. “It’s a straight 90 days,” prosecutor Danette Meyers said Tuesday. The result is that the “Mean Girls” and “Georgia Rules” star will be unavailable until late this year to start filming. Associated Press

Band pushes for Arizona boycott

Gibson’s ex investigated for extortion

Rage Against the Machine will push for artists and musicians to boycott Arizona because of its new and restrictive immigration law. The politically outspoken rap-rock band’s lead singer, Zach de la Rocha, plans to announce Wednesday that proceeds from a concert in Los Angeles on Friday will go to organizations fighting against Arizona’s law. Singersongwriter Conor Oberst will also throw his support behind Sound Strike, an artists’ boycott of Arizona.

Sheriff’s detectives in Los Angeles are checking extortion allegations against Mel Gibson’s ex-girlfriend. Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore says the agency is looking into whether Russian singer Oksana Grigorieva may have tried to extort the Academy Award-winner. He declined to offer any other details on the inquiry. Detectives earlier this month interviewed Grigorieva after she claimed Gibson abused her during an incident in January.
