At The Basket Room, you’ll find beautiful handwoven baskets, bags, and accessories. Handcrafted by women’s cooperatives in Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, our colourful woven collections inspire creativity with their artisanal patterns and organic designs.
With sustainability at the core of everything we do, our traditionally made African baskets are kind on the planet and good for the soul. They provide opportunities for over 10,000 weavers in rural areas, while bringing contemporary colour to every corner of the home.
Our unique perspective allows us to strengthen the connection between artisan and buyer, whether through images of the artisans, information cards telling their story or the inclusion of the maker’s name in the basket, underlining the transparency of our supply chain.
Our commitment to slow fashion and sustainability makes us a leader in ethical home accessories.

Our REWILD collection draws influence from nature and the need to reconnect with the outdoors, and embrace our native self.
Hues of husk, green, and black come together with un-dyed sisal to create a natural, but beautifully intricate look.
Handcrafted in rural Kenya, these storage baskets serve as a reminder that the most meaningful belongings experienced a life before, and will stand the test of time through careful and honest craft. This collection encourages us to look to nature for healing, to slow things down and to grow your own way within nature’s sweet embrace.
Handcrafted from resilient milulu grass in Tanzania, this extended range of cubed storage baskets blends traditional craft with modern interior design.
They come in three practical sizes, the largest of which fit comfortably into the cubed storage shelf units found in many contemporary homes.
Woven from reeds found in riverbeds and swampland, which can have a grassy tone when the material is green, this mellows with time into a beautiful, naturally textured finish.
Making square storage baskets is particularly skilled work and so while these handwoven baskets may not always be perfectly cubed, they are always beautifully formed.

Reintroducing our immensely popular cubed storage baskets, hand woven in Northern Ghana from indigenous veta vera grass.
Each storage cube takes up to three days to complete and the process is intricate: before weaving can begin, the grass is collected and split by hand, then hand-rolled and dyed.
They fit most standard cubed shelving units, and are available in five different designs; four stylish repeat colourways and FOSO our new assorted mix, pictured are some examples.

These striking floor baskets are woven in part from recycled sweaters.
The weavers carefully unravel second hand knitwear to make bundles of yarn, which are then rewoven to their own designs, resulting in a beautiful one-of-a-kind basket.
They take astonishing skill to produce and up to six days to complete. Traditionally mothers would craft a ‘kiondo’ for their daughter upon marriage.
The XL size is large enough to store blankets, throws or laundry and both sizes work well as characterful planters, or to tidy away shoes, slippers or playroom toys. Sold as an assorted mix.

Handwoven baskets hand-dyed using only natural materials, their beautiful hues achieved through foraging, pounding and mulching local grasses, tree bark, soil and even fireplace charcoal and soot.
Sisal grass fibres are boiled in water with the dye materials, or sometimes even buried next to tree roots to take on the desired colour.
Creating natural dyes for weaving is a labour-intensive process, but an altogether worthwhile one, creating more sustainable, environmentally friendly work for the community.

Mix and match sisal coasters, placemats and bread baskets - for an eclectic, artisan tablescape.
The craftswomen behind these woven wonders practise their craft within a small weaving group in rural Kenya. Where once these weavers would undertake a long journey to Nairobi to sell their work, we now place regular orders with them, enabling them to work safely and flexibly from home.
The majority of weavers are also subsistence farmers. During dry seasons when farming slows down, weaving work empowers women to support their families.

Handwoven from sisal grass on a loom by a single independent artisan.
Bernard makes each one of these decorative door mats himself in his workshop in rural Kenya, having learned to weave on a hand-loom through a UN-funded project over twenty years ago.
This work is extremely timeconsuming and physical, and weavers with his skillset and experience are hard to come across nowadays.
We’re proud to support the preservation of this craft.

Produced by the same weaver as our doormats and woven from indigenous sisal grass. Fibres are split, rolled and dyed by hand before being worked through the loom to create a fine, tight and flat weave that feels comfortable underfoot.
Agriculture is the mainstay of Bernard’s family income, but weaving brings him the opportunity to earn a reliable and fair wage through flexible work.
