welcome After four years and eight programmes presenting the most ground-breaking contemporary performance from across the UK, Europe and beyond, we’re delighted to present our new look brochure. We wanted more emphasis on vibrant images, more space for words to intrigue and inform and more pages for our growing programme of performances, workshops, events and artists’ development work. You can also check out our new website at www.thebasement.uk.com More than ever, we’re working in partnership with organisations, locally, nationally and internationally: Reckless Sleepers seminal performance Schrödinger is presented in partnership with South East Dance at The Old Market Theatre. Our east.by.south.east project, a partnership of six performance venues across the East and South East regions, will present Under Construction, a packed day of works-in-progress. Fresh from his Olympian interventions, and presented in association with House, Richard Dedominici’s Popaganda will focus his satirical surrealism on global politics and pop culture. In December, the extraordinary, hilarious and provocative Still Standing You is presented in partnership with Campo in Belgium and Inbetween Time in Bristol. Other must-see events will be coming your way presented in partnership with Black History Month, Brighton Digital Festival, Brighton Photo Biennial, CineCity and The Space. Huge thanks to all our partners for helping us build such a rich and exciting programme this Autumn. After the great success of the recent workshop by New York’s seminal Elevator Repair Service, we bring you workshops from the sensational Stacy Makishi and Belgian / Portuguese duo Pieter Ampe & Guilherme Garrido, two great opportunities for artists to get involved. So take the plunge this Autumn, and immerse yourself in a programme of sensational performance.

Sun 30th September 8pm (doors) Free

The evening will feature the uncanny robot orchestra of Brighton band, Space Dog, brainchild of Brighton’s award-winning composer, digital artist and roboticist, Sarah Angliss. They will be joined by an array of other performers and artists who have been involved in making the festival happen. Brighton Digital Festival is a celebration of digital culture that takes place across the city for the whole month of September. With over 100 exhibitions, performances, meet-ups, workshops, outdoor events and big-ticket digital conferences, it’s Brighton’s fastest growing festival. PERFORMANCE

POPAGANDA Richard DeDomenici Sit back and relax to the dulcet tones of Richard DeDomenici as he ham-fistedly attempts to destabilise global cultural hegemonies with a series of stupid audiovisual gags, songs that aren’t real, facts that aren’t funny, and jokes that don’t rhyme, in his new show Popaganda. A jetlagged litter-picker of the world’s cultural landfill, watch DeDomenici throw caution to the wind and western civilisation at the wall to see what sticks.

Thurs 11th October 7:30pm (doors) £7 £5 Under 25’s/concs

Like the Large Hadron Collider, Popaganda seeks to find new meaning through frenetic bombardment. Like a can of tomato soup Popaganda is condensed, easily digestible, and likely to stain. Richard DeDomenici’s work disturbs perceptions through humour and confrontation outside of normal cultural spaces, mixing conceptual art tactics with an irreverent pop sensibility. In 2011 he performed in Tokyo, New York, Amsterdam and Berlin. He was shortlisted for the Arts Foundation Fellowship, nominated for the Jerwood Trust Moving Image Prize, and was an Oxford Samuel Beckett Theatre Trust Award finalist. Embarrassingly he lost all three. ‘Clever, tremendously funny, powerfully political, and unafraid to be accessible.’ The Herald www.dedomenici.com Director: Richard DeDomenici Sound: Richard DeDomenici Richard DeDomenici is an Artsadmin Associate artist. She’s better at writing than at talking, so she draws. On the floor. Starting with herself. No lover, so: Lonely. Loneliness brings boredom. Being bored can be solved with money, e.g. for a better computer. But the money’s not there: mother unemployed, due to: economic crisis. And what could she do to resolve it? Koba faces things alone, questioning herself, making choices, sticking to her guns in the midst of an internal storm. Belgian performance company Ontroerend Goed have become internationally renowned for their uncompromising and provocative works, drawing audiences into intense engagements, then ripping the rug from beneath their feet. Their works have received numerous awards and toured widely throughout the world. The Shit/La Merda Silvia Gallerano/Cristian Ceresoli A “young” and “ugly” and naked woman reveals her bulimic, revolting and public secrets as she struggles with obstinacy, resistance and apathy for her own celebrity breakthrough in the society of thighs and liberty.

WED 28th –thu 29th November 7:30pm (doors) £8 £6 Under 25’s/conCs

An actress of untamed talent, Silvia Gallerano, creates a physical and vocal mask challenging a provocative, scandalous and beastly literary score written by Cristian Ceresoli where words might be sung, howled and shrieked but a chant never emerges. In her naked physicality she tells a personal story in an unbroken flow of thoughts/words rendered as sounds and movement. The deafening screams being choked. Appeased. Imploded. This female onstage offers herself up in a feast, ready to be torn apart by anyone. A poetic piece born of the flesh that returns to the flesh, captured in a tightly-sealed aesthetic. Applause required. PERFORMANCE

STILL STANDING YOU Pieter Ampe & Guilherme Garrido / CAMPO (Belgium / Portugal) Still Standing You offers a supremely direct and strangely subversive glimpse into the relationship between two performers. With a dance idiom entirely their own they shamelessly seek out what they mean to each other. Are they friends, partners, lovers, rivals or even enemies? Their only instruments are their bodies, the intensity of their boyish friendship and the ability to combine anger and love in one all-encompassing embrace.

Still Standing You, the second duet of Pieter Ampe and Guilherme Garrido, premiered in 2010 in Leuven (BE) and has toured widely around the world. Pieter Ampe studied at SEAD (Salzburg) and P.A.R.T.S. (Brussels). He has collaborated with choreographers and performers including Jan Decorte, Frans Poelstra & Robert Steijn, Roland Seidel and Anne Juren. A Coming Community, made with Guilherme Garrido, Nuno Lucas and Hermann Heisig, premiered in the 2012 edition of the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels. Guilherme Garrido has worked as a dancer with Maria Clara Villa-Lobos, Ibrahim Quraishi and Tommy Noonan. Rachel Mars

The Way You Tell Them The Way You Tell Them will explore what it means to be funny, why performers and ‘real’ people often hide behind laughter, and what confronts us when humour is suddenly stripped away. In preparation for this ‘stand-up theatre’ Rachel Mars has been interviewing comedians, reading academic tomes of ‘humour theory’ and recalling the way humour and tragedy were often closely linked in her own family background. Rachel Mars is a performance maker with a background in theatre, live art and comedy. She creates performances that are funny, intimate, rude and sometimes heart-breaking. ‘Brought up in a Jewish family with a disregard for personal space or tactful enquiry, Rachel’s work explores the idiosyncratic constructs that surround our social interactions, forcing a deeper examination of cultural habits. She does this with humor and intelligence, looking at the bizarre and surprising nature of human connection and identity.’ The Unobserved Online Radio Magazine www.rachelmars.org

Touch and Meet A volcano perpetually erases its own history Taking events of seismic and global scale as metaphors for personal disruption A volcano perpetually erases its own history tells the story of a pilot grounded in Iceland during the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull. Touch and Meet is a collaboration between Rachael Clerke and Josephine Joy. They use lo-fi props to recreate gigantic events, and gigantic events to illuminate small lives with pathos and a deep sense of life’s absurdity. The company met in 2009 whilst studying theatre at Dartington College of Arts. They aim to make challenging yet accessible devised theatre and performance that responds to the world around us. They are interested in the space between laughing and crying; awkward pauses and absurdity. www.touchandmeet.com

RESIDENCIES The Basement is committed to supporting the development of new work by artists from across the UK. Residencies allow artists to spend time in our rehearsal spaces, providing them with a focused and critical context where they can develop their works and enrich their practice. Our residency programme is part of east.by.south.east, a 2-year Arts Council funded project designed to develop the infrastructure for the creation, presentation and touring of live art and contemporary performance practices in the East and South-East regions.
