History of Highlands

Entry Deadline: July 20, 2025

Exhibition Dates: August 9 - November 29

Formerly known as the Bascom Member's Challenge, this refreshed exhibition initiativeÑCommunity Callinvites participation from all artists in our extended creative community. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Highlands, NC, our inaugural theme is "History of Highlands."

Artists are invited to submit one original artwork that reflects or is inspired by any aspect of Highlands' rich and storied past. We welcome a wide range of interpretationsÑfrom personal reflections and local legends to historical milestones and cultural landmarks.

Submission Guidelines

Need inspiration? Consider drawing from:

» The town's founding in 1875 or its early settlers.

» Iconic sites such as Sunset Rock, the Old Edwards Inn, or Helen's Barn.

» The region's natural environmentÑincluding native flora, waterfalls, and the Southern Appalachian landscape.

» Stories of Highlands' artistic and cultural heritage, including the role of local galleries, artisans, and community traditions.

» Reflections on family history or personal memories tied to life in Highlands.

» The spirit of seasonal celebrations, past festivals, or notable figures who have shaped the town.

Let your work tell a storyÑwhether it captures the spirit of a place, honors a memory, or reimagines a moment in Highlands' history.

Submit required information via email to Zach Rogers, Director of Exhibitions at zrogers@thebascom.org Please Include

• Name

• Title, medium, dimensions, and date of artwork

• High-resolution JPG image of work

• A short (about 100 words) artist statement about how your submission relates to the theme. Calendar of Events

¥ Submission Entry Deadline: July 20, 2025

¥ Deadline for Work Drop Off: August 2

¥ Exhibition Dates: August 9 - November 29, 2025

¥ Public Reception: September 4, 2025 5pm Exhibition Guidelines

¥ Submitted work will be reviewed by guest juror, Terri Manoogian.

¥ All mediums will be considered.

¥ All work must be labeled with the title and artist at time of delivery.

¥ All work must be ready for display. Hardware and materials will not be supplied by The Bascom.

¥ Artists will be responsible for delivery and pick up of artwork.

¥ Accepted work must be picked up within 1 month of exhibition close or include a prepaid mailing label for return shipping.

¥ Work left after the deadline will become property of The Bascom unless other arrangements are made.

¥ No work can leave the gallery before the exhibition closes.

¥ There are no size restrictions on size of submitted work. (All pieces must fit in the gallery)

Sales

Artwork will be sold through The Bascom. If work is not for sale, please mark NFS. Artists will recive 60% commission from retail price. (60/40 split for artists and The Bascom)
