Our Mission

The Bascom creates visual art experiences that inspire and empower individuals and communities through seeing, thinking, and doing.

Our Vision

The Bascom aspires to be a leading organization in the Southeast that focuses on making the visual arts a vibrant and vital part of our region by ensuring that the arts are accessible and affordable to all. By offering experiences that engage the artistic imagination, we build human capacity and resilience in the people of our region and infuse the creative economy of Western North Carolina with opportunities for community members, visitors, and artists alike.

Celebrating our Creative Community

The Bascom is a place where engagement with the visual arts enlivens the experience of the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. Our goal is to enrich our community with exhibitions of artists well-known and new to the scene, classes for people of all ages and skill levels, and outreach programs that serve children and youth in Macon and Jackson Counties. As a free, public space in a beautiful mountain location our campus offers visitors time to walk an outdoor trail while taking in sculptures and stories for kids, and historical structures that celebrate the legacy of American handwork and ingenuity.

The last two years have demonstrated our resiliency as we fully re-opened after COVID and developed a growing network of artists in the region who engage in our exhibitions, retail, teaching, and other professional development opportunities. At the same time, we continue to develop new partnerships with other organizations that allow us to extend our mission across the region and deepen our impact on children and youth in our community.

All that we do is made possible by our generous donors who support our programming in outreach and education and in opportunities for the public to partake in our offerings. Thank you!

Due to the efforts of Board and Staff, our organization is in a sound financial position, with an endowment of $1.3 million and a balanced operating budget. We have also begun a study of our opportunities for the future, from examining capital needs for maintaining our beautiful facilities and grounds to imagining our future campus in light of the needs of our growing mission.

We are honored to have the privilege of serving the vibrant organization that is The Bascom and hope to see you in 2024!

Exhibitions & Symposia

The Bascom holds ten or more exhibitions each year in three galleries – the Bunzl, the Thompson, and the Joel, and outdoors on the Horst Winkler Sculpture Trail. We are fortunate to have facilities with unique gallery spaces that afford artists and curators opportunities to design original exhibitions. From Japanese prints to Moulthrop bowls, to fine metals and textiles, works show their vibrance here.

“As an early career curator, The Bascom offered me a playground to tap into our region’s artistic undercurrents. Through The Bascom’s collection, as well as other major collections across the Southeast and original commissions, we collaborated on an exploration of the heritage and future of Southern storytelling.

Three Potters Symposium

For more than a decade, The Bascom’s Three Potters Symposium has celebrated the heritage of clay traditions by bringing together three contemporary clay artists of both regional and national importance. Our purpose is to showcase the variety of ways that clay can be used to make both functional and sculptural works of art. Audiences observe demonstrations and an exchange of ideas between the artists on techniques, aesthetic goals, and professional practices. The event is instructive for both clay practitioners and those who wish to learn more about the diversity of clay practices and traditions. Thanks to the generosity of Bascom donors, the Symposium is free to the public. Among the artists who have participated over the years are Mark Hewitt, Cynthia Bringle, Michael Sherrill, Chris Gustin, Cristina Cordova, Jennifer McCurdy, and Ben Owen III.

Vision Cashiers and The Bascom

Collaborate to Bring Public Art Installations to Cashiers

The Bascom’s Outdoor Sculpture Program plays a crucial role in our ongoing commitment to make visual culture accessible to the public on the Plateau. Annually since 2021, we have brought five sculptures to the Horst Winkler Sculpture Trail on campus. Thanks to a collaborative partnership with Vision Cashiers, who shares our mission to bring quality art to outdoor spaces, we expanded our impact in 2023 by installing two new sculptures in the Village core of Cashiers. We celebrate this collaboration and the growing vitality of the arts in our community.

Creative Community Initiative

The Creative Community Initiative offers a range of programming, including rotating free admission exhibitions, community partnership programs, artist/ curator talks, art clubs, and a scholarship program that widens access for all to our annual workshop series. The outreach component of our initiative serves over 3,000 participants annually, including about 1,500 school-aged youth who participate in age-appropriate, arts-integrated academic activities. Through all of these programs, we seek to provide a creative approach to learning that removes access barriers, enhances community and social connections, and improves engagement with both in-school learning and opportunities for lifelong learning.

In 2022 & 2023, we consistently:

• Represented over 250 local and regional artists through our retail channels and exhibitions

• Annually employed three artists through our residency and fellowship programs

• Hosted two free continuing education workshops for local teachers

• Directly served over 3,500 participants through our public programs

• Annually presented 11 high-quality exhibitions with accompanying programming

• Annually paid over $300,000 in artist commissions, stipends, honorariums and visiting instructor fees

I have the great fortune to speak about The Bascom from the viewpoint of teacher, exhibitor, curator, and workshop student. In each of these roles I witnessed The Bascom as a supportive incubator of creativity and education, both on the individual and community level. What sets this organization apart from other art centers is its commitment to providing programming and opportunities that bring people together and enrich the lives of participants and visitors alike, stretching beyond its regional borders.

“Our family observed, firsthand, the positive impact of the Bascom’s children’s programming as we watched individuals illuminate a child’s life via pottery classes, camps, gallery experiences, and private art lessons. The Bascom approach provides an essential alternative to the typical distractions in our children’s lives, embraces each child’s innate creativity, and recognizes that their small hands create the dreams of our world, touching our souls forever.

Thank you to our donors

Our impact on the regional artistic community is significant, but we couldn’t do it without the generous support of our Bascom family, who donate their time, energy, talents and resources to ensuring we’re able to continue our mission.

Barratt Society

In 2022, The Bascom launched a new giving society, named in honor of our founding donor, Watson Barratt. With a challenge grant from Mary and Greg Thompson, we enrolled 16 families in the program in 2022 and an additional 9 in 2023. The Barratt society makes possible a predictable income stream to support our annual operational budget.

Donors who make a three-year pledge of $10,000 or more per year for three years (total of $30,000 or more) are recognized as Barratt Society patrons. Barratt Society donations support the sustainability of The Bascom by offering a renewable stream of donation revenue. Barratt Society patrons are recognized as the most generous members of our Director’s Circle and are invited to attend a special event annually to honor their philanthropic leadership.

A Sense of Place

The Bascom campus is a visual treasure that elicits for visitors a strong sense of place—to make art or look at art in the context of the land and nature. Our iconic structures represent the historical and rustic feel of the Western North Carolina Mountains and are testimonies to the ingenuity of American craftsmen. This year, Bascom friends have made significant contributions to restore and to augment the campus, for the benefit of all. To make art here is to make art in a special place.

The Will Henry Stevens Bridge

The Will Henry Stevens Bridge is a defining feature of The Bascom campus, and is cherished by our community. Named in honor of Will Henry Stevens, a Southern Modernist painter who practiced both in North Carolina and in New Orleans, the bridge celebrates his legacy. In 2023, we undertook repairs to the understructure of the bridge to ensure its functionality for the years to come. The bridge was originally acquired with the help of the Coleman and Winingder families who had strong ties to Will Henry Stevens and who are the founders of the New Orleans Academy of Fine Art (NOAFA). As such, The Bascom and NOAFA have a lasting connection made possible by our donors.

A Frame House

The Bascom’s A frame cabin on Oak Street is the primary housing for artists, curators, and guest speakers at The Bascom. Thanks to a generous gift from Susan and Charley Tarver in 2022, both levels of the A frame have been renovated to provide an improved campus experience for visiting guest artists. This gift is essential for sustaining a valuable Bascom asset and for allowing The Bascom to continue providing accommodations to artists that make significant contributions to Bascom programming.

Soda Kiln

In 2023, The Bascom was offered the opportunity to acquire a Soda Kiln, never fired, at nominal cost. Thanks to this gift from Cashiers resident Mary Attaway, and to friends of The Bascom’s clay program who donated funds to help us dismantle and move the kiln to The Bascom, as well as build a structure to house it, we anticipate having an operational soda kiln mounted and ready for use this summer. The Soda Kiln is special in several ways. In addition to allowing new firing techniques for potters who use our studio, the kiln was originally commissioned and built for Cashiers resident and Bascom teacher, Justin Allman. Allman, who had an untimely death was beloved in the community, and we are grateful to be able to use the kiln to support and deepen the clay program at The Bascom. Watch for word of its initial firing and a public celebration later in 2024.

Restoration of The Bascom’s Lanterns

Corrina Sephora, Bateaux Illuminés

Bathing The Bascoms porte- cochère and main entrance in warm glowing light, two hand crafted lanterns titled Bateaux Illuminés by artist Corrina Sephora are installed suspended above guests and visitors as they enter the main building. Appearing to be decorated with glass and metal, the materials selected by the artist are in fact mica and recycled industrial metal. In 2023, Janet and Carlisle Overstreet, the family who originally commissioned the vessels in memory of Shara Baker Overstreet, generously supported a complete restoration of the lanterns, bringing back the original beauty of the work.

Pictured from left to right: Director of Exhibitions, Zach Rogers, Facilities Manager, Maurice Laderoot, Assistant to Corrina Sephora, Richard Pepe, and Janet and Carlisle Overstreet gather under the recently restored lanterns, Bateaux Illuminés.

Condensed Statement of

Position

A Letter from our Treasurer

I am pleased to report that the financial position of The Bascom remains strong thanks to donor support and the strength of our programming. Operating results, as reflected in our Statement of Activity before the non-cash charge for depreciation, were solid for both 2022 and 2023.

The Vision and Priorities statement adopted by the Board in 2022 directs us to: strengthen our programming; recruit and retain talented staff; develop and sustain philanthropic support and carefully steward our campus assets. We have worked diligently on all four objectives in the last two years.

Thanks to everyone for all you do for The Bascom.

LIABILITIES AND NET ASSETS

If you wish to receive a copy of the 2022 Audited Financial Statements, please contact Holly Alligood, Director of Finance and Administration, at halligood@thebascom.org. Please note that the Audited Financial Statements for the year 2023 have not yet been completed. They will be available for distribution once the auditing process is finalized.

Of Note:

The groundswell of generosity from our donors in support of the introduction of the Barratt Society in 2022 was unprecedented. IRS rules require the three-year pledges to be counted in the year they are made, resulting in extremely robust contribution levels. These gifts allow us to make multi-year plans to expand our mission.

We are also grateful for the philanthropic support of our Special Events Patrons - 74 for two events in 2022 and - 76 for our Gala in 2023.

Generous donors also contributed to critical capital improvements on campus, notably the repair and refurbishment of the Will Henry Stevens bridge; the A-frame cabin; and a brand-new soda kiln, which further enhances our already noteworthy ceramic program.
